        Piezorhynchus Brown (Brown's Flycatcher)

London 1875 - John Gould (1804-1881) was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor, from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became and expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was about to meet with the country’s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, “A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.” For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. While is Papua New Guinea, he decided to embark on a final folio as a complement to his unprecedented Birds of Asia. The Birds of New Guinea was Gould's last full-scale work, left incomplete on his death in 1881. Gould completed twelve of the twenty-five parts, and the task of finishing the project fell to Richard Bowdler Sharpe, a superbly qualified successor, who had been Gould's colleague, assistant and friend. One of Gould's most exotic works, the five magnificent volumes of the Birds of New Guinea contain an extensive series of beautiful images of birds of paradise, bower birds, parrots, parakeets, cockatoos, kingfishers and hawk-owls. All of the 320 images are extraordinary for their color and artistry, interesting backdrops and animated compositions. Gould and Sharpe created some of their most engaging and active scenes of bird life in the Birds of New Guinea, and the great popular reception of the work was such that it was one of their only productions that led to a sequel, Sharp's Birds of Paradise (1891-98). Missing from that later production, however, was the almost overwhelming variety of species of the Birds of New Guinea, which, like the Birds of Asia, was the most comprehensive chronicle of the island's ornithology ever issued. This folio size, hand-colored lithograph, Piezorhynchus Brown, measures 21.5" x 14.75" and is in excellent condition. The birds illustrated, commonly called Brown's Flycatchers, are expertly hand-colored in deep shades of blue with brilliant white accenting the neck, wings, bellies and wingtips. The fine lines and detailing define the plumage of the birds and the patterns of feathers on their bodies. These birds are placed within a lush background, resting on a branch along the waterside.

General George A. Custer writes from Fort Lincoln, Dakota Territory, to his friend Major John Carland, who found his body after the Battle of the Little Bighorn: "I have seized several government missiles ?"

Fort Lincoln, Dakota Territory, March 31 [1875?]. 7.75" x 9.75". "Rare Displayable Autograph Letter Signed ""G.A. Custer / BMGenl"" and ""G.A.C.,"" in dark pencil, 1 page, 7.75"" x 9.75"". Fort Lincoln, Dakota Territory, March 31 [1875?]. To Major [John] Carland. Two mounting remnants on top edge verso with no show through, minor pinholes at folds. Fine condition.""Fort Lincoln DT March 31. Major Carland. As his employer will be arrested on similar charge look closely to Hannons bondsmen. I have seized several government missiles concealed near Apple Creek by Bmrk [Bismarck]. Cause his arrest also on this charge and scrutinized his bondsmen closely - If he could be placed here for safe keeping by the Marshall I think information of value could be obtained ...""Although the year is not given in the letter, the incident probably occurred during the spring of 1875, about the same time that grain stores began disappearing steadily from Fort Lincoln. With justice still being dispensed pell-mell in the chaotic frontier town of Bismarck, and under orders not to make arrests outside the military reservation, Custer was hampered in his efforts to stop the robberies. Assisted by his friend Major John Carland, an officer with the 6th Infantry who had formerly worked as a lawyer, Custer was determined to root out every thieving culprit. Here he tells Carland that he has ""seized several government missiles [cannon balls, ammunition] concealed near Apple Creek"" and speculates that if the man sought by Carland ""could be placed here [Bismarck] for safe keeping by the Marshall, I think information of value could be obtained.""During the planning of the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Custer told Major Carland that he did not want the support of the 2nd Cavalry and Gatling guns because ""I want all the glory for the 7th."" Shortly after the June 25-26, 1876, battle, a column of troops under Gen. Alfred H. Terry's command arrived. Carland was in Terry's column. It was Carland and Terry who discovered Custer's body on the battlefield.Provenance: Sotheby's, November 1, 1993, lot 43."

Cabinet Card Photograph of a Woman by a St. Louis Professional Woman Photographer

St. Louis: Mrs. J.H. Fitzgibbon, Photographer. [circa 1875]. Measuring 4.5" x 6" image on a very slightly larger card with the back mark of Mrs. Fitzgibbon and her studio address on Olive Street in St. Louis. Slight wear, just about fine. Nicely composed image of an unidentified woman, possibly an actress, in a fancy, Little Bo Peep-esque outfit adorned with a large show hat.Louisa M. Dennis of Buffalo, New York (later Mrs. J.H. Fitzgibbon) founded the St. Louis studio with her husband in 1869. She took over the studio on Olive Street in 1875 when her husband retired; he died in the sleeping car of a train in 1882. At about that time she sold the studio and in 1883 founded the long-running photographic journal The St. Louis Photographer (which took over from The Practical Photographer which she and her husband had founded upon his retirement) and which conducted business under that name until 1887, when it became The St. Louis and Canadian Photographer, which ran until 1910 or later. She later remarried and conducted business as Mrs. Fitzgibbon-Clark.John H. Fitzgibbon, was a pioneering photographer. He took up photography in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1839 upon the announcement of the Daguerrian process. He later set up a studio in St. Louis, and then still later in Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he was caught trying to run the blockade during the Civil War in order to flee the city and was sent to Cuba. After the War he was returned to New York City, where he met and married Louisa M. Dennis. At the time of his death a contemporary periodical note the he was "the oldest photographer in the country, save one" (at age 65!).A nice image by an entrepreneurial woman who was both a pioneering western woman photographer and a journalist-publisher. Her work is represented in the Julia Driver Collection of Women in Photography at Yale. .

The Wines of the World Characterized & Classed:

London: Ward, Lock, & Tyler/Ward, Lock, and Co.,, 1875 & 1879. with some particulars respecting the beers of Europe; [and] — Facts about Champagne and Other Sparkling Wines... Two works bound in one volume, octavo (175 x 120 mm). Contemporary green half calf, red morocco label, green cloth sides and endpapers, red sprinkled edges. Second work with wood-engraved frontispiece and 39 plates, many illustrations in the text. Extremities lightly rubbed, some pencil underlining, very good copies. First editions. The journalist publisher Henry Vizetelly had made himself an authority on wine during his long residence in France; he produced four monographs on the subject between 1875 and 1880 and serving as a wine juror at the Vienna Exhibition of 1873 and the Paris Exhibition of 1878. It was in France too that he read the novels of Emile Zola; it was his publication of translations of Zola on his return to England that brought him notoriety and turned him into a reluctant martyr, one of the early heroes of the fight against oppressive literary censorship.

Fine watercolour portrait believed to be Harriette Ann Simson (1858-1942) of Launceston, Tasmania

Launceston, 1875. Watercolour portrait, 18 x 14.8 cm (mount size), very fine; preserved in a handsome folding travelling folder of burgundy roan, lined with green moire silk, gilt, the picture surround with gilt fillets and blind-embossed. A remarkable portrait in fine original condition, in an elegant travelling case. Both the dress, composition and furniture suggest this to be a mid-Victorian portrait, circa 1875, painted prior to Jane Eddie's marriage in 1881 to the prosperous businessman and merchant Augustus Simson.Born in 1858 in Launceston Jane Harriette Eddie was the second of five children born to George McKenzie Eddie and Charlotte Martha (née Fogg). Little is known of her early life, but the portrait suggests a background of some comfort and wealth. In 1881 she married Augustus Simson-a successful merchant and businessman and (noted keen amateur naturalist) - at Holy Trinity Church Launceston on 7th October 1881. They had three sons and two daughters between 1882 and 1891. Augustus died aged 81 on 21 May 1918 and was buried at the Carr Villa Cemetery in Section B1 No. 210. Jane died aged 84 on 12 Sep 1942 and her remains were interred with her husband. Their two unmarried daughters, Dora and Janie, were also interred in the same plot (see The Examiner 14 Oct 2006, p. 35).Augustus Simson came to Australia in 1863 and spent some time in North Queensland engaged in pastoral and mercantile pursuits before leaving for Tasmania in 1874. He was involved in tin mining and ore buying on the East Coast before starting a business in Launceston in 1879 purchasing and exporting wool and tin. Augustus became manager, local secretary and agent for a number of mines and was a founding member of the Launceston Stock Exchange in 1881. He was one of the original members of the Australian Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the Royal Society of Tasmania, and a board member and president of the Mechanics' Institute. He was well-known as an amateur naturalist and was consulted as such by Henry Button and was a member of advisory committee to develop the Launceston Museum.Provenance: from the family, by descent.

Imprimerie cooperative, Geneve 1875 - In 16, pp. 16. Buffalo Dance

Chatto & Windus, London 1875 - Lithograph, hand-coloured, after Catlin and McGahey. Wove paper, cut to the edge of the image and mounted on card, as issued, within an ink-ruled frame Image size: 12 1/8 x 17 5/8 inches; sheet size: 17 3/4 x 21 3/4 inches. A fine image from Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio', one of the most important accounts of Native American life. This "group, though not strictly a hunting scene, is so closely allied as to be often considered by the Indians indispensable to their success. Amongst. [the Indians], the success of their hunts and wars is often attributed to the strict observance of several propitiatory modes of singing and dancing to the Great (or other) Spirit; soliciting his countenance, and promising to give to him, (which they always do,) by sacrificing, the choicest pieces of the animal slain in their hunts. The. songs sung on these occasions are exceedingly curious, and called Medicine (Mystery) Songs. All tribes have their medicine songs peculiar for the hunting of each animal they choose to go in pursuit of, and by singing these songs they conciliate the. invisible deity or spirit presiding over these animals' respective destinies, and who must necessarily be consulted in this way." Catlin summarized the Native American as "an honest, hospitable, faithful, brave, warlike, cruel, revengeful, relentless, -- yet honourable, contemplative and religious being." In a famous passage from the preface of his North American Indian Portfolio , Catlin describes how the sight of several tribal chiefs in Philadelphia led to his resolution to record their way of life: "the history and customs of such a people, preserved by pictorial illustrations, are themes worthy of the lifetime of one man, and nothing short of the loss of my life shall prevent me from visiting their country and becoming their historian". He saw no future for either their way of life or their very existence, and with these thoughts always at the back of his mind he worked, against time, setting himself a truly punishing schedule, to record what he saw. From 1832 to 1837 he spent the summer months sketching the tribes and then finished his pictures in oils during the winter. The record he left is unique, both in its breadth and also in the sympathetic understanding that his images constantly demonstrate. A selection of the greatest of images from this record were published in the North American Indian Portfolio in an effort to reach as wide an audience as possible. The present image is one of the results of this publishing venture and is both a work of art of the highest quality and a fitting memorial to a vanished way of life.         Quarante de Besigue Revue en Quelques Scenes et Trois Tableaux Representee au Sporting-Club, sur le Theatre des Pupazzi le 21 Mai 1875

Paris: Imprimerie Seringe Freres, 1875. First Edition. Quarater Morocco, Marbled Boards. Very Good. Scarce, with only three copies located on OCLC FirstServe (Rochester, Harvard, Bibliotheque Nationale). 4to. 23.5 by 17 cm. 46 pp. With eighteen plates, all of which are photos of mixed media illustrations. Petit, for example, cut out caricatures and placed them against a curtained backdrop. The effect of the illustrations is akin to claymation, wavering between the real and surreal. Seventeen of these plate illustrations are caricatures, very singular in their conception, a singularity accentuated by their unusual execution. The caricatures are organized around short humorous -- absurdist -- skits. Depicted are a man dressed as a Japanese samurai, a general on horseback, a toreador, an one-legged officer, etc. This work was also published in an ordinary edition, which itself is hard to come by. This is a deluxe edition. Original wraps bound in. Light rubbing along joints, and other trivial wear to binding. Some waviness to leaves.

Cabinet Card Photograph of a Woman by a St Louis Professional Woman Photographer

St. Louis: Mrs. Her work is represented in the Julia Driver Collection of Women in Photography at Yale. .

The Communistic Societies of the United States; from Personal Visit and Observation

Harper & Brothers, New York 1875 - Large octavo, frontispiece and 16 plates, illustrated; a very good, fresh copy in publisher's cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. First edition of this influential and extensive study of the communitarian ideal in the United States.Charles Nordhoff (1830-1901) emigrated to the United States as a child, and went on to have a varied career as sailor, journalist and writer. His grandson Charles Bernard Nordhoff is the famous historian of the Bounty. In The Communistic Societies of the United States, Nordhoff recounts his travels to many of the socialistic societies which became popular in the nineteenth century, most famously the Shakers of Mount Lebanon, the Rappite township at 'Harmony' and the Oneida Community. As Nordhoff points out in his Introduction, he hoped that a study of these communities might provide 'useful hints toward the solution of the labor question'. Throughout, the work displays a thoroughness and lack of hysteria which supports his claim to have 'thought it best to give at first an impartial and not unfriendly account of each commune.'.         Kanzen ch aku [Poetic Justice]

Osaka: n.p., 1875. First edition. Some edges trimmed, pinprick to upper right corners, occasional rubbing and staining at edges, but overall very good with vibrant colors.. Sixteen issues of this illustrated newspaper which demonstrates the notion of kanzen-ch aku: the encouragement of virtue and the chastisement of vice. Issues numbered 4 through 19, each containing a complete story of rape, murder, drownings, infanticide, and other tales of violence. This tabloid was a continuation of one of two types of Japanese newspapers which began began in the 17th century as kawaraban which were printed handbills sold in major cities to commemorate major events. They usually dealt with the misfits of society or major catastrophes, whatever was especially sensational. This led to the development of the illustrated newspaper, "shinbun nishiki-e" which were "produced by artists and craftsmen to cater to the less literate. The juiciest stories chosen from the familiar diet of news, murder, revenge, illicit love... were extracted and produced as single sheet colour prints. The cartouche on the print carries a number in the series rather than a date. Very often the text concludes with a brief outline of the moral that can be drawn from the tale. Shinbun nishiki-e continued the illustrated kawaraban format with text as part of the composition, although the pictures themselves were much more dramatic and sensational and, due to the arrival of aniline dyes, colourful. In a semi-literate society, the bold pictures and the additional phonetic alphabet in the text to assist with the more difficult kanji, guaranteed as large an audience as possible," Rebecca Salter: Japanese Popular Prints (Univ. Hawaii Press, 2006), pp. 60-61. No other copies located.
