SEIYOH MONJI CHIE: WISDOM OF THE WESTERN ALPHABET.

[Japan, 1875]. A small folding album, 8 x 17 cm., original. blue covers, [18]p., accordion folded, soiled covers, verso. blank, but evidence of a Japanese practicing his attempt at. writing in English alphabet,128 color woodcut illustrations.. USE THE WESTERN ALPHABET TO TEACH JAPANESE A very charming early attempt to teach the Japanese English alphabetical letters and numerals. Folded and reading from traditional left to right, this work shows the Japanese the familiar "IROHA" alphabet in both Katakana & Romanized alph- abetical letters [Romaji], with Hiragana above. The most fa- scinating part are the profuse color woodblock illustrations of familiar Japanese objects, each with Romanized letters & the appropriate Japanese. Such cute things as Inu, Roonin, Hato, Niwatori, Potsukkuri [Pokkuri], Hyotan, Tonbo, Ringo, Dobin, Soroban, Taiko, Daikon,Yoroi, Wakizashi, Kani, Katsuo and a plethora of others. This work basically was used to train the Japanese to read Romaji first for familiar objects and thus begin the process of learning English ultimately to read English letters. Works of this subject are now quite RARE and seldom come to market, many were basically used up in the learning process. This example well used, cover soil, bit thumbed, but remarkably complete. Back cover has the Sumi penned date: Meiji 7 nen, with a later cover title slip pasted on, and Sumi ink title written. Brief commentary on the English language, some text worn away, balance complete. Prospectus states, "So much of the stock will be sold at a bed-rock price, as will enable the Directors to push each tunnel until sufficient ore can be taken out to pay the working expenses."         Kaisei rikugun fukusei zu [Army Dress Code Amendments].

Tokyo: Rikugunsho, 1875 - Quarto (274 × 181 mm). Original Japanese fukuro-toji, pouch binding, double-punched with green silk, and jute ties, original printed paper wraps with thin linen spine. Wraps somewhat damped, rubbed and a little soiled, spine with some chipping, marginal worming towards the rear, almost entirely marginal, very slight encroachment on a few images, but overall very good, plates clean and the colour bright, a number with lightly pencilled annotation in English. 264 hand-coloured plates on 132 Japanese-style double leaves First edition of this uncommon catalogue of Meiji Restoration military uniforms, OCLC , locates just three copies, the National Diet Library, LoC, and University of Michigan. Clearly illustrates how the modernising Japanese Army adopted uniforms resembling those of their American Civil War advisors, and the French Third Empire. Early in the 1870s the Meiji Emperor and Saga Saneharu, his Minister of Justice, issued a series of edicts establishing regulations governing the uniforms of civil officials, nobles, and the military, and this contemporary hand-coloured catalogue clearly reflects the Western influence on uniform design at the time. The illustrations begin with the blue kepi for the various ranks, with rank indicated by combinations of braid and stars on the top; officer's jackets, shown front and back; epaulettes; uniform sleeve braids in blue and gilt; detailed images of aiglettes with diagrams of their construction, dark blue trousers with distinguishing side stripes of white, blue, green (cavalry), red (infantry), artillery (yellow), purple (quartermaster corps), and more. Of particular interest is the section on sabres and other swords, scabbards, hilts, ornaments and trappings many with finely-detailed diagrams of the pattern of decoration; together with accoutrements such as belts, buckles, and spurs for cavalry officers and servicemen, many images heightened with hand-applied gilt. This exhaustive survey also includes the more practical overcoats, raincoats and capes, work-wear, leather gaiters and spats. These uniforms were in service through the Boshin War of 1868-9, and the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877, some were subsequently modified in 1886 to resemble more closely the Imperial German uniforms which were becoming favoured, and then used with minor changes during the Sino-Japanese War of 1894. Highly attractive visual reference for Japanese military costume during this interesting period. See Nakata & Nelson, Imperial Japanese Army and Navy Uniforms and Equipment (1987).         Artist's Sketchbook

Wisconsin 1875 - Marbled cardstock wraps, cloth backstrip; oblong, 210 x 175 mm; contains 20 beautiful pencil sketches. Includes portraits of men and women; a horse; a table with a book on it; The Reservoir, Looking South, From Centre Street (Wisconsin landscape); Schoolhouse Bluff, from the Depot, Mazomanie (Wisconsin landscape); Black Hawks Cliff, Wisconsin River; The Wisconsin River, Looking Up from Kilbourn City; In Cold Water Canyon, Dells; Mouth of Cold-Water Canon; Diamond Grotto, Dells; In Witches Glen, Dells; Devil's Doorway, Devil's Lake, Wisconsin; Natural Walls, Devil's Lake; Devil's Lake, from the East Shore; and 2 drawings of men in a sailboat. Front cover bent; small chip at bottom corner of front cover and first few leaves (tho images are unscathed). All drawings appear on the recto only (as such, removable, and suitable for display). These drawings are from relatively early in the artist's career, perhaps while we was still a student. They are as strong as his later, professional work, and they are more careful and polished than his later work -- he was clearly honing his skill. Remarkable. Harley DeWitt Nichols (1859-1939) was born in Barton, Wisconsin. He began his education in art as early as 11 years of age. His first job putting his talent and training to use came in the form of an apprenticeship with the Milwaukee firm Marr & Richards, where he stayed for 3 years, drawing and engraving on wood. The subsequent years included many moves, from Milwaukee to Chicago, and later to New York, where he studied at ASL and was encouraged by Professor Packard to pursue a career as an illustrator at a European school. Nichols left for Munich in October 1885 to attend the Royal Academy, where he studied under Heckel, became a member of the American Club, and socialized with Carl von Marr, the club’s president. He went to London for a little while, and worked as an illustrator. By 1893 he’d returned to New York, working mostly in advertising, and illustrating for Harper’s Weekly and Century magazines. He helped organize the New York Water Color Club. Nichols didn’t curb his parapatetic lifestyle until he moved to Laguna Beach, California, in 1894. The art community in Los Angeles was in its infancy, but he got a teaching job at the Echo Mountain summer school, and he was inspired by the scenery of Yosemite, Monterey, San Juan Capistrano, and other locations in southern California. He stayed in Laguna Beach until his death in 1939. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

HIGAYON LEV ISRAELITISCHES GEBETBUCH FÜR DIE HÄUSLICHE ANDACHT [INCLUDING THE FIRST AMERICAN REFORM HAGGADAH] [BOUND WITH] GEBETE FU¨R KINDER [AS ISSUED] (1875) .

Philadelphia: 1875.. Hardback. 1st edition thus. Original cloth binding, 8vo,  [4], 164, 20 pages (188 pages total) . Text in Hebrew and German. Goldman 63; This edition unrecorded and apparently unknown to Ya'ari or Yudlov. THE FIRST AMERICAN REFORM HAGGADAH. Higayon Lev (Logic of the Heart) was a liturgical volume for private devotion which was published to supplement the popular Avodat Yisrael prayerbook that Jastrow had created, based on the earlier work of Benjamin Szold. Jastrow?'s revisions ?"creatively modified the classical contours of the Siddur preserved in Szold?'s version and added many new prayers. ?" Among its contents are: selections from Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) ; daily prayers for women, children (and adults who lack the time to complete the regular liturgy) , all accompanied by a non-literal German translation. There is also a fascinating appendix of children?'s prayers which includes, in addition to the more standard basic prayers, special prayers to be recited on one?'s birthday as well as on a parent?'s birthday. The most important component of the new edition however is Jastrow's Haggadah, (pages 35-54) , the first printed in America that demonstrates the influence of Reform. Here, the Hebrew elements are reduced to a minimum and incorporate many emendations, even to such quintessential texts as Ha Lahma Anya, Vehi She?'amdah and the Four Questions (here reduced to a single query) .   When Jastrow reprinted the text with an English translation three years later, he wrote, "this plain narrative is well adapted to suggest many a thought as to what duties are incumbent on the Israelites of our own days, and especially in countries like ours where the morn of religious liberty has already dawned and is shedding its roseate light over all inhabitants alike. ?" SUBJECT(S) : Judaism -- Prayers and devotions. Reform Judaism -- Liturgy -- Texts. Siddurim. OCLC lists 8 copies worldwide. Some wear and light staining, in the original blind-tooled binding, is (kh-6-1) .

        LE CAPITAL

Paris: Maurice Lachatre et Cie., 1875. Quarto. Recent cloth, gilt label. Portrait. Pictorial title-page. Alternate pictorial title from first wrapper of parts issue. Facsimile letter. Text in double columns. Modest foxing early and late, some hand smudges and a few marginal nicks to first two leaves, but generally a very good copy. First edition in book form of the first translation into French of the first volume of DAS KAPITAL, first issued in parts from 1872-75. The translation was undertaken by M.J. Roy, with the intimate collaboration of Marx himself, who acknowledges the importance of his own substantive revisions in his postscript to the text (dated London 28 April 1875), emphasizing the independence of this text from that of the first edition. This printing includes rather ornate engraved head and tail pieces (somewhat out of character with the text itself), earning it the curious sobriquet of the "first illustrated edition." This copy has the following features which are generally taken to indicate the first issue: a) "1er livraison" and "Prix de la livraison: dix centimes" at the lower corners of the engraved title; b) engravings of buildings, a city square and obelisk on main title; c) ornate imprint of "typographie Lahure" on verso of title; and d) the text of a letter from Maurice Lachatre to Marx on the verso of the facsimile of Marx's letter to him. These features were either altered or omitted from the second "issue" of ca. 1878 issued under the imprint of the LIBRAIRIE DU PROGRESS. When the first translation into English was undertaken ten years later, Moore and Aveling, under Engels's editorial direction, incorporated the important revisions published first in this edition into their text.

Digest of Patents relating to breech-loading and magazine small arms, (except revolvers) granted in the United States from 1836 to 1873, inclusive. Classified and arranged according to the movement of the principal parts for opening and closing the breech

Washington, 1875. Quarto. (11 5/8 x 9 inches). 1p. small format errata tipped onto rear pastedown. 780 patent-drawings photo-lithographed (up to ten to a page) on 84 full-page illustrations by N. Peters of Washington. Bound to style in half calf over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, spine with raised bands in six compartments, ruled in gilt on each band, lettered direct in the second and fourth compartments Provenance: Allen P. Westcott (Chicago, firearms consultant in legal cases, ink stamp) An important and rare work on American breech loading and small arms, published in a relatively small edition. No copies of this work are listed as having sold at auction, but it was important and rare enough to warrant a facsimile reprint in 1963. On the dust-jacket of that edition it was noted that the "Digest is the only existing compilation of U.S. Patents of breech-loading and repeating small arms ... As a means for identifying trial or experimental pieces (usually unmarked on the guns themselves) this reference work is without parallel." The Preface describes the work as follows: "This digest has been prepared from the official records of the United States Patent Office, and with a view to present the subject in a brief yet comprehensive manner, for the information of inventors, manufacturers, attorneys and others interested in the art. It has been the purpose of the compiler to group all patents relating to breech-loading and magazine fire-arms granted in the United States ... in such a manner that they may be readily referred to, and the numerous and important improvements made in both sporting and military arms, traced. All inventions ... have been classified and arranged according to well-defined characteristics or systems, depending upon the movement of the principal parts for opening and closing the breech. The index of names is an alphabetical-chronological list of inventors, and is the key, in connection with the number or date, by which information ... may be obtained from the Patent Office."

Church and State; or, Christian Liberty. An earnest address on the Establishment of the Hierarchy. With an Introduction & Notes by his Son

Longmans & Co, London, 1875. Fourth Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket as issued. Inscribed by person(s) connected with book. Published originally in 1851, this work was first published as a response to political tensions in England following the perceived aggressive actions of the Papacy in promoting English Catholic interests over those of the Established Church, and it was then re-published in 1875 by Pugin's son as a counter to Gladstone's claim against Catholics that they "had forfeited their moral and mental freedom" following the decrees of the First Vatican Council in 1870 regarding Papal Infallibility. Edward Pugin's intention in republishing the work was to caution Catholic opinion from challenging the authority of the State in these circumstances. An interesting publication overall, giving insight to the tensions between the Catholic Church and state in England in the decades following Catholic Emancipation. Hand written inscription to the Bishop of Shrewsbury by E. Welby Pugin to front blank, and bookplate of Bishop of Shrewsbury on front pastedown. Rare in any edition, this, the 4th edition, contains a tipped-in facsimile letter in the hand of John Henry Newman, dated Feb 10th, 1875 at The Oratory regarding his appreciation of Pugin's work (Newman was a surprising supporter in the circumstances, as he and Augustus Pugin had suffered quite a poor relationship in general). Together with a portrait frontis of Pugin, an introduction by Pugin's son, and reprinted letters from W.E.Gladstone , and Canon H.P.Liddon. Some very light browning to the edges of the title page. Original dark green cloth, gilt, dark red fore-edges. a very good, clean and crisp copy of this rare work. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 68 pages.

46,5 x 64 cm. Der 1843 in Philadelphia geborene Ledger Delmonico (d. i. KODAI MOYOH SHIKI ZU KO: ILLUSTRATIONS OF ANCIENT PATTERNS &DESIGNS FOR CRAFTSME

[Japan n.d. c. 1875-80]. Black stitched embossed wrs., cover. corners bit rubbed, contents clean, vols. 1 & 2 of 3 vol.set. 25 double leaves per volume, ie 50 pages b.w. illustrations,. average of 6 designs per page, nicely done. S C A R C E. A VERY CHARMING DESIGN BOOK BY JAPAN'S GREATEST ARTISTS These designs were the inspiration for the craftsmen who worked on Tsuba, Menuki, sword furniture, lacquer ware, tex- tiles, ceramics, Netsuke, Inro, Kimono & Obi. Some of these designs are clearly extracted from the Midare or "cloud pat- terns" found on Japanese sword blades, some are based on sea & foam, waves, water related, the Buddhist swastika & Mand- ala, Buddhist wheel of life, other Buddhist symbols. Also mythological dragons, stylized birds and other animals, most of these are the basis for Tsuba. Stylized flower patterns & a host of others were made into textile patterns, embroid- ery work and again applique to ceramics and lacquereware. A superb resource and inspiration for any designer or student of art. What makes this design book exceptional, is the face that the compiler has given tribute to the most famous art- ists of the past by listing their names on the front cover including Tani Bunsho, Kikuike and a host of others who have made Japan's designs famous throughout the world.Brilliantly done.         HONG KONG ISLAND PANORAMIC B.W. ALBUMEN PHOTOGRAPH.

Hong Kong n.d. ca. 1875, n.p. A very large b. w. album photo. photo size: 64.3 x 21.3 cm., mounted on boards 67.3 cx 25.6. cm., very good, some minor fading in the center, folded in. the center with cotton tape on the verso, no major defects.. A LOVELY LARGE & EARLY PANORAMIC VIEW OF HONG KONG C.1875 This is a very rare and quite early panoramic view of Hong Kong Island. * The photograph was taken from Kowloon across the harbor showing the outline of the mountains, the peak and the city of Victoria [central area], with the waterfront, and center left is the anchorage and Wanchai. A large sailing brig is at anchor just near Wanchai. * THE PHOTOGRAPH: The photograph is composed of three photographs, aligned and laid down on a stiff board. The center has a vertical cut to the photographs, and folds backwards with a cotton tape supporting the two halves. At some earlier time when the photographs were laid down, their appears to have been another cotton tape on the recto over which the photographs were affixed. That tape has broken, thus leaving the folded photos to be separated now. This is normal for very large panoramic photographs of this early period. * THE COLOR OF THE IMAGES: The three photographs were taken with a panoramic type camera, that actually took a large width photograph. After taking three such photographs, the photographer mounted the three photos by aligning one over the other then gluing them down on the stiff board. It is therefore necessarily true that each photograph was taken consecutively, but due to the chemical developing process, ambient temperature, time of day and differences of exposures, and other physical factors, each photograph has a slight variation in color and density so that they are not perfectly matched, which was the norm of the period of the 1870's photography. * THE IMAGES: Each image is exceptionally clear, save for the far right image has a small skiff in motion and is blurry, otherwise all photos are clear, with strong images and little fading. The center photograph was taken with some different setting or at a different time of day and is therefore somewhat less dense in color, but is nevertheless still sharp and clear. The photo at the far left was also taken at a different time of day, perhaps in the late afternoon as it is darker the the others. All of this is entirely normal for panoramic photographs. * THE CONDITION: The photos are all in very good or better condition, as issued, with albumen surface which is quite intact. There are a few very small spots at the upper area or the sky, these are not greatly distracting or obvious. The mat board has a few small & old foxing spots, and a slight wave to the board but the wave matches when the two parts are folded face to face. It was very common for leaves of photo albums of this period to have this sort of form. The edges are gilt and its is likely this photo was removed from some center hinged photo album. So it was meant to be folded in the center from day one. There is a small flaw in the negative in the far right photograph which is unknown but not something that happened after the photos were mounted. By and large these are excellent photographs, no fading. If there was any fading, it would be an overall issue. Strong images otherwise. *** THE VERSO: The verso has four albumen photographs: [from the left] 1. A large image of what can be India or that area, showing people wearing Sarongs, 27 x 18.5 cm. very clean sharp image. This view shows a number of people surrounded very very tall bamboo thickets and a road paved with stones leading down to the water. The water appears to be a very slow-moving river with no current whatsoever. * 2. Unidentified location, a waterfront on the water, with "Eastern Telegraph Co." [a British firm established 1860] at the left, Frank Azzopardi & Co., Ship Chandlers & Stevedores, 21.3 x 16.8, very good, solid image, with s touch of hand-color of red on a small flag found on the stern of a ship. * 3. Two small photographs, 10 x 7.2 cm. showing the ship's company of a naval vessel rowing two launches. According to the uniforms, these could possibly be American or British in nature from the 1870's. In the lower photo at the top is what appears to be a sailor on watch duty, he has a utility belt with pistol, and looks down at others on a catwalk with a large cargo net used for support and rigging for marines. The sailors wear both white uniforms, as well as blues for work and as part of the deck or ['black'] crew who do jobs that would otherwise soil their uniforms. They all wear white hats. *** It is this cataloguer's impression that this pair of album leaves were pulled from some sort of a 'cruise book' commemorating the voyage of some early naval vessel's cruise in foreign waters, recording for memory a historic journey, this was a common feature of most world navies and still is ! * NOTE ON OUR PHOTOGRAPHS OF THIS PHOTOGRAPH We have tried our best to make photos, but the first image we post "cover.jpg" to our website is slightly different that the other two we post due to the fact that this was photographed in full sun, so it looks more grey than brown tones, the brown tones are true and a correct reflection of the actual color. When we used the flash this left a bright mark on the photo so we have elected not to use that kind of photo. *** Color scans can be sent by email. Images displayed may not be the actual copy in stock for sale at any given time; if you want to see the exact image of the book or edition in stock, please request this by email and an image will be returned to you by attachment. * * * * BUY WITH .

Constructed by A. Keith Johnston, H.D. Rogers, Edw. Weller and other eminent geographers; compiled and editied [sic] by Charles H. Jones, assisted by Theodore F. Hamilton

Chicago: H.H. Hardesty & Co, 1875. Folio. (19 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches). Historical Atlas section: title, 4pp. preliminaries, pp.7-88 text; 7pp. wood-engraved illustrations, 1 folding chromolithographed map, 40 hand-coloured lithographic maps (13 double-page). Wood County, Ohio section, printed on verso of the text and map to the preceding: 1p. 'Index to Wood County', [27]pp. of text; 11 uncoloured lithographic plates with views of 22 properties in Wood Co., 1 double-page hand-coloured map of the county, 2 hand-coloured maps of Ohio and surrounding states, 6 hand-coloured town-plans (2 double-page). Publisher's black half roan over brown cloth-covered boards, the lower cover blocked in blind, the upper cover in gilt and blind An extraordinary 19th century American atlas: an Ohio county atlas published within a stock atlas of the world, with the county maps and views printed on verso of stock atlas sheets. The inspired idea of combining county and national atlases seems to have been a particular favourite of the publishers Hardesty & Co. Between 1875 and 1882 they published nine different variations on the same theme, combining the Historical Atlas of the World with atlases/histories/trade listings for the counties of Defiance, Fulton, Wood, Monroe, Lawrence and Putnam in Ohio; Jay and Wells in Indiana; and Wood & Pleasants (in one vol.) in West Virginia. The two works are truly inextricable: views and text from one are published on the backs of the maps in the other. For instance: the double-hemisphere world map from the Historical Atlas has the first two pages of the History of Wood County on the verso and the double-page map of Wood County has maps of Newfoundland on one recto and Canada, etc. on the other. To attempt to unite the two, the publisher has numbered the Ohio county content with fractions, so that the page numbering is consecutive. The Historical Atlas is a fine example of its type: a majority of the maps are of the Americas (including 12 of one or more of the individual States), and the colouring is attractive and colourful. The Wood County section includes much valuable information from an historical viewpoint and a number of charming views of the houses and farms of the prominent members of the community. "Despite their limitations and inaccuracies, nineteenth-century county atlases nonetheless preserve a detailed cartographical, biographical, and pictorial record of a large segment of rural America in the Victorian age" (Ristow, American Maps and Mapmakers, p. 424). Ristow, who devotes an entire chapter to the 19th century production of county atlases, makes no mention of such a combined atlas. We have never encountered another in this format.

THE EARLY COINS OF AMERICA; AND THE LAWS GOVERNING THEIR ISSUE. COMPRISING ALSO DESCRIPTIONS OF THE WASHINGTON PIECES, THE ANGLO-AMERICAN TOKENS, MANY PIECES OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN, OF THE SEVENTEENTH AND EIGHTEENTH CENTURIES, AND THE FIRST PATTERNS OF THE UNITED STATES MINT

Boston: Published by the Author, 1875. 4to, contemporary black half morocco, gilt; top page edges gilt; other edges untrimmed; marbled endpapers. (2), v, (5), (11)-381, (1) pages; 110 wood engravings in the text; 2 folding heliotype manuscript facsimiles; 10 fine heliotype plates of coins and tokens with original tissue guards. Plates slightly stained before binding; spine and corners a bit rubbed; very good or better. Arguably the best and certainly the most enduring work on American numismatics ever written. Sylvester Sage Crosby began gathering information for his magnum opus in the late 1860s. Nominally the head of a committee of six appointed by the New England Numismatic and Archaeological Society to publish a work on early American coinage, he soon found himself alone in that pursuit. Not only was the research and composition of the work done almost entirely by Crosby, ultimately he also had to publish it. "It is truly the keystone to any library of American coinage." --Eric P. Newman. State with overprinted coin numbers on Plates IV and V. Coin 15a on Plate VII hand-numbered in pencil, apparently as always. FUGAKU HYAKKEI: THE HUNDRED VIEWS OF MT FUJI

[Nagoya 1875, Tohekido]. Blue stitched stiff wrs.,3 vol. set. woodblock printed on hand-made paper, very good, leaf 15 from. vol. 2 lacking, else contents complete, clean, clear images,. in tones of grey, Sumi, black, indigo blue, 164 x 24 cm.RARE. HOKUSAI'S MOST CELEBRATED BOOK ON SACRED MT. FUJI Perhaps Hokusai's [1760-1849] most famous work in book form, illustrating a profusion of views of Mt. Fuji from all perspectives. This was also the prototype for his great color print series on Mt. Fuji. A delightful & impressive work, used as a standard for over a hundred years by artists, designers and collectors. This monograph is devoted to Japan's most sacred Mt. Fuji in all its glory, portrayed in various seasons and as seen by common folk as they go about their daily lives & occupations. * The volumes are 22.5 x 15.5 cm., with 25+25+25 double folded leaves or 150 pages in all, with illustrations of Mt. Fuji on 144 of the pages, 6 pages of Japanese text. The history of the various editions are complex, suffice to say that the work was originally issued in two volumes [it could be that the whole work was simply bound within two covers]. Then there were basically two main editions: the first being published in 1834-5, and reprints of this the first edition in pink covers called "FALCON FEATHERS," later ones in yellow covers. Another in 1875, in black stiff covers. The contents in all cases identical, the size varied by only a few centimeters, essentially all are identical. * The introduction consisting of the first two pages in volume one were actually written by Hokusai. * The work is marvelous, and shows how Mt. Fuji was portrayed in the life of the Japanese. How in the spring time people sat outdoors and viewed the cherry blossoms with Mt. Fuji in the background. The theme is how Mt. Fuji was always present in their daily lives as a background. The artistry and skill of Hokusai is without parallel, he illustrated using his keen ingenuity at drawing skills. He put the sacred mountain in the picture in a myriad of ways. The mystical quality of Mt. Fuji is illustrated and conveyed by his acute composition, insight and visionary-like avant-garde skills which were head and shoulders above most all other artists of his time. Hailed as perhaps Japan's greatest artist of the 19th century. All of his original woodcut books are rare and of great value. * REPRINT EDITION: The 1948 reprint edition was an exact woodblock-printed edition of the earlier edition and has all of the same pages and illustrations found in earlier editions, with a paper Chitsu or folding cover, nicely done, good registry, color, the exact same size as earlier editions. * AN ENGLISH TRANSLATION: If you are interested in the English translation of each page of this set, please inquire with us for this title. It is a superb work, giving valuable insight to the texts found in this stunning work. It bears the title: FUGAKU HIYAKU-KEI: ONE HUNDRED VIEWS OF FUJI BY HOKUSAI. See bibliography below. *** CONDITION NOTE: The 1877 edition has a small mend at the last page, the colophon in vol. 3, else very clean, nice. *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: * H. This book contained an actual and original woodcut illustrated edition of Hokusai's book bound in with the English translation of the Hokusai text.
