        PHINEAS REDUX

1874. [in the two-in-one binding] With Twenty-Four Illustrations. London: Chapman and Hall, 1874. Original green cloth decorated in black and gilt (paginated for two separate volumes). First Edition of this novel that picks up where several previous ones left off. It is primarily a continuation of PHINEAS FINN, with Phineas returning to London after seven years of exile in Ireland and the death of his wife. But the Palliser family also figures in the plot, as it does in FRAMLEY PARSONAGE, DOCTOR THORNE and several other Trollope novels; Lizzie Eustace (with her new husband) also makes an appearance, fresh from her adventures in THE EUSTACE DIAMONDS.~PHINEAS REDUX first appeared serially in The Graphic, 26 weekly instalments (July 1873 - January 1874), each with an illustration. The book edition, using only 24 of the illustrations, was published in two blue-cloth volumes in December 1873 (though dated 1874). In 1874 the publisher Routledge took over publication of this book, and not only issued C&H's unsold copies and sheets, two-volumes-in-one with separate pagination, but also printed up some additional copies that have continuous pagination. This copy is bound up two-volumes-in-one (separately paginated), with a Chapman and Hall title page and in a Chapman and Hall binding; if this was issued by Routledge, there is nothing so identifying that fact.~This copy is externally bright and near-fine (a couple of small nicks in the foot of the spine); remarkably, there is only minor cracking of this hefty volume's original endpapers. This two-volumes-in-one binding is quite uncommon. Sadleir 41. Housed in an open-back cloth case.

        Les Pléïades.

Stockholm, Jos. Müller & Cie; P. Plon, 1874. In-12. Intérieur très propre. Joint L.A.S., 3 pp. In-8 (Stockholm, 16 juin 1874). *

        On the Road to Khiva.

London: Henry S. King & Co.,, 1874. Octavo. Original brown pictorial cloth over bevelled boards, dark green surface paper endpapers. 7 mounted photographic plates, folding coloured map. Spine evenly toned, back inner joint split but sound, folding map loose. A good copy, with the publisher's 40-page catalogue at the end (dated February 1874). First edition, scarce. "The Daily Telegraph's special correspondent in Khiva and later noted as a prolific author of stories for boys ? Ker (1842-1914) left England in early March 1873 and travelled via St. Petersburg to the Black Sea and on to Tiflis, whence 'my real journey commences'. It is this eventful journey from Orenburg via the border forts of Kazalinsk and Perovskii to Turkestan, Tashkent, and Samarkand that forms the substance of his book" (Cross). Sent to report on von Kaufman's operations against Khiva, Ker travelled "with a passport as a United States citizen, so as to evade the regulation framed by the Russian government prohibiting Englishmen from entering the newly-conquered territories of Central Asia" (Marvin, Reconnoitring in Central Asia, p. 97).

Our neighbourhood" or Sketches in the Suburbs of Yedo.

Yokohama 1874 - Octavo. Pp. (vi), 124. Plus 24 finely drawn plates, on of which is a frontispiece, each protected with tissue-guard. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's full cloth, large gilt lettering to cover within double-ruled blind frame with four corner's fleurons, this motif repeated on lower board; spine-ends worn, small chipped hole at bottom of cover, foxed in places mostly on tissue-guards. In a very good condition. A lovely copy. ~ First edition thus, originally published as a column in the "Japan Weekly Mail". It was published here in a book form for the first time with the articles partly revised and rewritten. In 1889 the book was republished in London by Chapman & Hall with the title "A Suburb of Yedo". The original edition presented here is one of the earlier accounts by foreign visitors and expatriates to be published in Japan, by a Japanese publisher. It describes vividly the Japanese culture and customs from the perspective of a Westerner living in Tokyo (Yedo). Topics include the sake shop, the barber, the sparrow catcher, the doctor and the graveyard. The 24 plates add a significant charm to the stories. Surgeon-Major Theobald Andrew Purcell (1841-1877) was British medical officer on duty in Japan. See also: Jozef Rogala: "A Collector's Guide to Books on Japan in English" (Routledge, 2012). ~ Provenance: From the private collection of Ing. P. L. W. Arts with his bookplate to first free endpaper. Extremely rare.

???? [Renp? shiryaku]. Summary on the United States

Volume I: 5 coloured woodblock maps, including one double page coloured map of the world, a map showing the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, another showing the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and a map of the United States. Volume II 37 maps one with outline handcolour. Black and white woodblock illustrations in the text in both volumes. Folded sheets 1-7, 1-47. Volume II: 1-48, 1-2. Paper title labels and wave pattern paper covers stained and a little insect damaged in places. Traditional Japanese 4 hole stab binding. 26 x 18cm. This influential work on the geography and customs of the United States was first published under the title ???????? [Meilige he sheng guo zhi lue] in Chinese in Singapore in 1838 by American missionary, E.C. Bridgman writing under his Chinese name of Pi Zhiwen ???. With the hope of removing the uncivilised image of the United States, Bridgman had begun writing this book in 1836 and finished it at the end of 1837 with the help of a Chinese man called ?? [Liang Zhi]. Following its publication this work became the educated 19th century Chinese persons standard reference for all related to the United States. There are still disputes among the academics with regard to how many Chinese editions of this book exist. However the majority of scholars agree, that besides the first 1838 edition, the other editions are the 1844 Hong Kong edition titled ????????? [Yamolige he zhong guo zhi lue] and the 1861 Shanghai edition ?????? [Da mei lian bang zhi lue]. In 1861 the first Japanese edition was published in Shanghai and it immediately proved very popular running to a further six editions over the following 13 years. Mitukuri Genpo ???? (1799-1863), an interpreter for the Edo government was responsible for the Japanese reading marks in the text, rendering the Chinese text more readable for the Japanese readership. Meine Bitte geht nun dahin dem Chef der Concordia an's Herz zu legen daß mir mein Abschied aus meiner Vaterstadt nicht zu schwer gemacht wird.         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1874 - 1874 Original Paperback Wisden, No Rear Cover, Very Rare.

Hi, This lot is an 1874 Original Paperback Wisden. It has no rear cover, tape to the spine and in OK to good condition. I was proud to own this book for years (hence how I can offer it at such a low price) but I have now purchased an alternative original so my book is up for sale, the front covers has a square of tape to it and has a lot of marks. The following 20 or so pages have very severe foxing as can be seen in the pictures (please see the video) after that it is clean inside. Tape to the spine and no rear cover but a very rare book, odd dog ear to the rear pages.

STATISTICAL ATLAS OF THE UNITED STATES BASED ON THE RESULTS OF THE NINTH CENSUS 1870

[New York], 1874. [4],5,4,14,13,8,3,4pp. plus sixty plates and maps. Large folio. Contemporary three-quarter morocco and cloth, gilt lettered label on front cover. Spine ends and corners significantly rubbed and chipped. Hinges starting, joints very tender. Titlepage torn and nearly detached (text affected, but no paper loss), else internally clean and good. A landmark of cartography, the atlas to the ninth census of the United States, prepared under the auspices of its director, Francis A. Walker. The importance of this atlas has best been described by John B. Jackson in his book, AMERICAN SPACE: "...Walker introduced to America the official use of what is now called thematic cartography. Maps with super- imposed symbols and colors are now of course very common, but it was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that they came into general use...many of these were used by Walker in his atlas and others were invented, notably the 'pie'...Walker undertook to illustrate certain population statistics from the census by means of varying intensity of color on maps. His efforts were shown at a meeting of the American Geographical Society in 1871, where they aroused such interest that the Secretary of the Interior was persuaded to issue a special atlas where both of the novel techniques were used: shades of color, and symbols. There were maps of the physical features of the United States - rivers and forests and geological formations and rainfall; and there were maps illustrating population distribution and industry and vital statistics. There were maps of the incidence of deaf mutes and intestinal diseases, of foreign born, of illiteracy - not only by state but by county - all in varying intensities of one color. To us there is nothing unusual about the procedure, but Walker was the first American to try to show the spatial dimension of social and economic facts, to relate social problems to their physical setting and thereby throw new light on them." Walker was an extraordinary man, serving as director of the ninth census at the age of thirty, then as a Yale professor, and finally president of M.I.T. from 1881 until his death in 1897. He made landmark contributions to statistics, cartography, economics, and education, especially in his building of M.I.T. into a great institution. This early achievement contained some of his most lasting and widely pervasive ideas, ways of visually displaying knowledge which are now part of daily life. John B. Jackson, AMERICAN SPACE, passim. DAB XIX, pp.342-44. REESE, STAMPED WITH A NATIONAL CHARACTER 84.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. Leipzig, 9. X. 1874.

1874. 3½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.
