CARRIER'S ADDRESS TO THE PATRONS OF THE "NASSAU TIMES." THE CARRIER'S INTERVIEW WITH THE DEPARTED KING 1873 [caption title]

[Nassau, 1874. 4pp. Folio, on a folded sheet. Old folds. Slight separation at some folds. Lightly soiled. About very good. The first carrier's address issued by the NASSAU TIMES, which began publication in 1873, published to commemorate the end of the year. A long poem, surrounded by a decorative border, runs the length of four folio pages, commenting on local and international news items, including the financial panic of 1873 in the United States. The poem reads, in part: "And few words speak of Uncle Sam, / - The world's renowned Republic - / No other land, whose shores are on / Atlantic or Pacific, / Can celebrate, like Jonathan's, / A great Commercial panic. / That boasted love for go-ahead, / That reckless speculation, / Too oft involve and bring about / The ruin of a Nation. / Such an event occurred last month, / - You've doubtless heard the story - / How great Banks burst, and others stopped, / And ruined half the Country. / But Yankees soon forget their woes, / (National characteristic) / Begin again, and sow the seeds / Of next Commercial Panic." Only two institutions list holdings for the newspaper in OCLC - the Library of Congress and the British Library. No copies of this address in OCLC or ABPC.

Ã‰léments d'économie politique pure ou théorie de la richesse sociale.

Lausanne: L. Corbaz & Cie; Guillaumin & Cie, Paris; & H. Georg, Basel,, 1874. Octavo (220 × 143 mm). Uncut in the original green printed paper wrappers. With 2 folding plates comprising 9 figures. Partly erased library stamp to front wrapper and title, ownership stamp of Sam Blasey, cand. jur. to front wrapper and half-title, Lausanne bookseller's stamp to rear wrapper. Spine neatly restored at head, chipped at centre and at foot, rear wrapper with two small chips along fore edge, lower outer corner of front wrapper with slight loss; some light spotting; a very well preserved copy of a fragile book . First edition of part one, written by one of the leading mathematical economists. Three years after Jevons and Menger, but independently of them, Walras here enunciated the theory of marginal utility. In this work he continued and refined the work inherited from his father and was successful in developing the law of general equilibrium which made him famous. The work falls into two parts: one dealing with the theory of exchange (pp. 1?208), the second part, first published in 1877, (continuously paginated, pp. 209?377) with the theory of production. "The book regards exchange as the central economic phenomenon and treats all other branches of economic study in relation to this central fact" (Batson). Walras operates with essentially the same concepts as Jevons, but he searches continuously for solutions of the most general character. Like Jevons and Menger, he bases exchange-value on utility and limitation of quantity. Following his father, he uses the term rareté, which he defines as the "dérivée de l'utilité effective par rapport à la quantité possédée". In other words, rareté is the same as marginal utility. The desire to equalize marginal utilities (according to Gossen's second law) will lead to exchange. And this desire, together with the stocks of goods possessed by each individual, will give a determinate demand or supply for each individual. This can be represented by a functional equation or by a curve. Walras was influenced by Cournot, and it was probably this influence which enabled him to combine a utility theory of value with a mathematically precise theory of market equilibrium. In spite, or because, of the difficulties which he experienced in this task, Walras was increasingly led to enunciate a general, non-utilitarian theory of economic equilibrium, expressed in terms of functional equations. He is, therefore, essentially the economist's economist, rather than of the general reader or the politician.

Bel envoi autographe de Demarquay à Etienne-Jules Marey sur la page de garde. Le feuillet de faux titre se détache mais est bien présent. Coins légèrement cornés sinon très bel exemplaire - - - "Although works have previously been published on certain aspects of the regeneration of organs and tissues, no comprehensive work has yet been published on this subject" (translation from Demarquay's Preface, p. 7). Demarquay's monograph on regeneration foreshadowed the wave of regeneration research in the 1880's and 1890's (see Churchill, "Regeneration, 1885-1901" in Dinsmore, A History of Regeneration Research, pp. 113-31).

(Hannavy, "Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography", 903). RARE ENSEMBLE. NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Deacon Jones' Experience

      N. P. (cleveland): J. F. Ryder, 1874. 12mo. Single sheet "card" (approx. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2"). Listed under BAL 7276 as a "card" produced subsequent to the leaflet issued by J. F. Ryder of Cleveland in 1874, with the paste-on sheet bearing an illustration by a Mr. Willard and the J. F. Ryder imprint. The present Bret Harte poem has fragments of the paste-on sheet still adhering to the reverse side. A few small edge chips; very good. The Kozlay Sale Catalog of March 18, 1926, indicates the copy of the leaflet printing (Item 99), was probably unique. If so, it must be the Yale University copy today. The "card" printing does not appear in the Kozlay catalog. The poem is not mentioned in Boynton's "Life" nor in the collected "Letters." It is printed on pages 385-387 of "Stories and Poems and Other Uncollected Writings" (1914), without any note of source. It probably had had a previous appearance in a periodical. Housed in an attractive, older cloth covered slipcase with a black leather lettering piece on spine; chemise. BAL 7276.

[Manuscript] Journal of a Voyage between Liverpool and New York 1874. A remarkable journal kept by a newly qualified surgeon of his 1874 trip to New York after 'passing my Primary examinations for the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons' before starting to practice in the autumn The journal contains a profusion of vividly rendered and highly unconventional detail about life in America's metropolis including a visit to the cells at New York Police Headquarters, a dramatisation of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre on Broadway which prompts a foray by Hodgson into dramatic criticism ('If Miss Charlotte Bronte could have seen the play, she would have had some difficulty in recognising it as an adaptation of her own novel') and finally the return passage spent in the intoxicating company of a future White Mountains artist and a young man destined to become a leading Australian meteorologist, breaking off in the middle of a storm at sea: 'a wall of water... approaches with terrible rapidity, and shifting the ship on the side, makes her shiver from stem to stern, while the great mass falls with a crash onto the deck, and sweeps all before it into the dark and hungry ocean beyond.'

, 1874. New York, 1874. Octavo. 32 pages Original Softcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. The Journal is accompanied by a very misleading replica of a wonderful whalers scrimshaw (the scrimshaw comes from a different source and was not originally part of this journal).

        O. Cirrhasium

0 - Watercolor on paper. London, c. 1874. 15" x 21 ½", Framed: 25" x 31 ½" Walter Hood Fitch was the most noted botanical artist of the 19th century to focus on orchids, and the foremost catalyst of what can aptly be termed British "orchidomania." Incredibly attuned to the smallest details of the most exquisite flowers, Fitch was uniquely able to capture the beauty and complexity of the orchidaceae. The reasons for his acclaim were best described by Sir Joseph Hooker, who noted that Fitch was an "incomparable botanical artist," with "unrivaled skill in seizing the natural character of a plant." The artist reached the height of his fame in his splendid collaboration with James Bateman, producing the fabulous and important Monograph of the Odontoglossum (London, 1874), which described the range of this beautiful genus of American Orchids. Found at high altitudes, from "the confines of Florida to the frontiers of Chile" (preface), these orchids were among the most striking and exotic ever offered to avid European viewers.
