ANNUAL REPORTS OF THE BROOKLYN PARK COMMISSIONERS. 1861 - 1873. Reprinted By Order Of The Board, With Such Acts Of The Legislature In Their Amended Form, As Relate To The Brooklyn Parks, And Their Management.

(Brooklyn: Commissioners of Prospect Park): , 1873. (Brooklyn: Commissioners of Prospect Park) 1873. The first twelve annual reports of the Brooklyn Park Commissioners were brought together here as a single volume and re-issued by the Park Commissioners after the creation of Prospect Park had been essentially completed. The park was authorized by legislation in 1859 and the initial plans for it were prepared by Egbert Viele, a civil engineer who had also been involved in the initial planning for New York's Central Park. The first annual report for Brooklyn includes Viele's proposal for the design of the Prospect park along with his extensive topographical report on the site. The outbreak of the Civil War interrupted activity for four years. Near the end of this period Calvert Vaux was consulted on the plan and made several recommendations - most notably urging a shift in the boundaries - which resulted in his being appointed to prepare and execute a new plan for the park. He persuaded Frederick Law Olmsted to rejoin him on the project, and thus the firm of Olmsted and Vaux began work on Prospect Park in 1865. Their report describing their new plan for a park within the revised boundaries makes up nearly the entire text of the Sixth Annual Commissioners report. Reports for the six following years elaborate on the design and relate the progress made on the park as well work on other smaller parks in the city. Each of these includes a detailed report from Olmsted & Vaux. In the 12th report they declare their work on Prospect Park to be essentially complete. 8vo (22.7 x 14.4 cm); 528 pp. + 10 plans (9 folding, 8 hand-colored) + 9 tinted lithographic views (2 folding) + 9 additional engraved or lithographed plates. Prospect Park Crudely rebound with card covers and cloth spine; the large folding plan of Prospect Park is frayed and torn at the margins and has some repaired tears at creases and edges; some spotting on title page; occasional mild foxing affecting some pages and plates.

The United Working Men of America. System of National and Local Organization for the Purpose of Guarding the Interests of Labor, Securing Consideration and Justice in Legislation, and for the Improvement and Elevation of all the Laboring Classes of the Country in whatever Pertains to their Intellectual, Moral, and Physical Welfare [WITH] Two Membership Broadsides

Washington: W.H. Moore, 1873. First Edition. Provides the organization's constitution and the "Resolutions Adopted By The National Labor Council at Washington, D.C., Mar. 20, 1873." An early organizational tract concerning one of the many branches of the organized labor movement in America. The text often refers to the term "Working Council" and describes organizing Councils for each county and Districts for each State, all to be subordinate to the National Organization, referred to here as the "National Executive Committee." The NEC would also be used by the Socialist Labor Party, formed in 1878 from the Workingmen's Party of the United States. 1873 was still very early in terms of national organized labor in the United States, most likely related to the general labor movement active in Europe. The stated purpose provided in the subtitle is a reflection of the ideas of Marx, who desired an educated working class led by a political party that would eventually overthrow the ruling class and create a non-exploitative world. WITH: Commission. United Workingmen of America. Broadside (35.5cm.) printed from manuscript sketch. Previous folds, top half of right-hand edge a bit toned, else very good. An unused membership certificate stating to the addressee that "You are hereby appointed and commissioned as the Executive Officers of the United Workingmen of America...and vested with all the authority appertaining to said office.         Modern Painters

London - Smith, Elder and Co. 1873 - An uncommon, five volume set of John Ruskin's definitive work of Nineteenth Century art criticism Modern Painters, signed by the author. Number of alimited edition set of 1000Signed by Ruskin to the In the original publishers cloth binding. A leading Victorian art critic, as well as a noted watercolourist, Riskin was particularly influential in the second half of the Nineteenth Century and up until the First World War, the aftermath of which saw his reputation dampen somwhat until the publication of numerous academic studieas of his work, where he was recognised as having predicted interest in environmentalism and sustainability. Here, Ruskin's considerable expertise are a the forefront. The first volume argues, in the form of an extendeddefence of J. M. W. Turner, that painters that were then emerging from the tradition of picturesque were superior at the art of landscape than the old masters. Initially written as a standalone work, subsequent volumes would be written later. The second volume, originally published in 1846, placed emphasis on the symbolism in art, especially regarding nature; the third is of 'many things' in the author's own words; whereas volumes IV and V concentrate on the depiction of mountains and leaves, clouds and relativity respectively. Contains eighty-four illustrative plates and engravings, collated complete. Condition: In decorative cloth binding with gilt detailing. Externally sound, there is some marking and wear to the boards, as well as wear to the extremities, backstrip amd joints. The spines are also somewhat rubbed. Internally, the pages are firmly bound but foxed throughout. The illustrations and text remain clear in each volume. Overall: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Collection of Arthur Atkins' Art in Photographs

Arthur Atkins was born in England in 1873. The young self-taught artist followed his brother Henry from England to the San Francisco bay region of California in 1892. He studies abroad in Paris only to follow his heart back to the bay area, specifically the Piedmont area. The young artist died prematurely in January of 1899 at age of only 26. This collections consist of 53 photographic silver tinted images of Arthur Atkins' art. Each image has the place, date and owner of each piece of art printed in lower margin. Each measures approx. 9 ½" x 11 ½" and held within an archival style gray cloth covered chemise with Arthur Atkins' name handwritten on the spine in black. These photographs are a rare glimpse of Arthur's works as most had been lost either in the large studio fire in the 1890s or lost due to the 1906 earthquake. Little remains of his work except perhaps, a few pieces held in private collections. [Hughes-Artists in CA. 1786-1940 p.25].

Presentation copy, inscribed and signed by the author: a thorough examination of Richard Henry Major's Life of Henry the Navigator by a member of the Société de Géographie.Major is remembered as a pioneering revisionist voyage historian who challenged conventional notions on the first discovery of Australia. Major's linguistic skill allowed him to study and interpret first-hand archaic and difficult material beyond the grasp of his contemporaries. And in 1861 Major was honoured by Pedro V of Portugal and made a knight of the Tower and the Sword.Although many of Major's beliefs are now not widely held (and his interpretation of the Dieppe maps has been vigorously challenged), his publications reinvigorated interest in the early voyages and stimulated debate upon in the maritime discovery of Australia before Cook.

A fine set.Mary, Queen of Scots (8 December 1542 ?- 8 February 1587), also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, was Queen of Scotland from 14 December 1542 to 24 July 1567 and Queen consort of France from 10 July 1559 to 5 December 1560. Mary, the only surviving legitimate child of King James V of Scotland, was six days old when her father died and she acceded to the throne. She spent most of her childhood in France while Scotland was ruled by regents, and in 1558, she married the Dauphin of France, Francis. He ascended the French throne as King Francis II in 1559, and Mary briefly became queen consort of France, until his death in December 1560. Widowed, Mary returned to Scotland, arriving in Leith on 19 August 1561. Four years later, she married her first cousin, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, but their union was unhappy. In February 1567, his residence was destroyed by an explosion, and Darnley was found murdered in the garden. James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, was generally believed to have orchestrated Darnley's death, but he was acquitted of the charge in April 1567, and the following month he married Mary. Following an uprising against the couple, Mary was imprisoned in Loch Leven Castle. On 24 July 1567, she was forced to abdicate in favor of James, her one-year-old son by Darnley. After an unsuccessful attempt to regain the throne, she fled southwards seeking the protection of her first cousin once removed, Queen Elizabeth I of England. Mary had previously claimed Elizabeth's throne as her own and was considered the legitimate sovereign of England by many English Catholics, including participants in a rebellion known as the Rising of the North. Perceiving her as a threat, Elizabeth had her confined in various castles and manor houses in the interior of England. After eighteen and a half years in custody, Mary was found guilty of plotting to assassinate Elizabeth, and was subsequently executed.Antoine Chatelin was a French binder who executed many fine bindings on great books. Examples of his work have appeared many times at auction.

The final paragraph of the letter deals with wine and mentions the wine dealer Carl Voltz of Wiesbaden: "In the mailing of the circular simply a lapse had happened: Herr Feustel was out of town, and all the others just believed [that it had been sent]. Now everything is on its way... I am puzzled by London, and because of that I have canceled it for now; consequently, the earlier date of the Cologne concert did not please me, since nobody there could assume that I would conduct in Cologne on the 23rd and in London on the 25th, whereas retaining the 25th for Cologne would have been highly desirable for me... [Carl] Voltz?'s white wine does not agree with me again; it has caused me unbearable acidity..." Number "7" in blue pencil to upper right corner. Provenance From the Wagner collection of Mrs. Mary Burrell. Very slightly browned; some smudging; three small holes to left margin and a few additional very small holes. . Wagner-Briefe-Verzeichnis 6461 (correspondent identified as Carl Voltz, which seems unlikely as the letter refers to Voltz in the third person). Les Autographes, catalogue 21, December 21, 1984, no. 294. Brief summary in Richard Wagner: Briefe—Die Sammlung Burrell, ed. John N. Burk, transl. Karl and Irene Geiringer (Frankfurt: S. Fischer, 1953), letter no. 487C, p. 740. Brief English summary in Letters of Richard Wagner: The Burrell Collection, ed. John Burk (New York: Macmillan, 1950), letter no. 487C, p. 587. A more likely recipient of the letter is Carl Wilhelm Batz (1853-1894), a writer and agent, also of Wiesbaden. Batz and Voltz had purchased the performing rights of Wagner's operas Rienzi, Der fliegende Holländer, Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg from Wagner on February 25, 1872. As Batz and Voltz tried to enforce their rights, the validity of the contract between them and Wagner was soon contested. The resulting series of notorious lawsuits lasted until after the composer's death. The "circular" mentioned in the letter was obviously an attempt to raise funds for the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, which was then under construction. Friedrich Feustel (1824-1891) was a banker and politician in Bayreuth, a notable early supporter of Wagner's festival plans.

Letter in the hand of Emma Darwin, with corrections and signed by Charles, to [John Jenner Weir] thanking him for many interesting details, some of which should be published in Nature, wondering with respect to birds' nests whether 'the same nesting spot might prove attractive to birds which had had no intercommunication', and envying Weir the privilege of meeting John Stuart Mill, whom Darwin had not met; a postscript adds that Darwin was now at work on vegetable physiology.

Downe, Beckenham, Kent, 22 May 1873 - 8vo (200 x 125 mm), two pages (two separate leaves, written on one side only); on headed writing paper; sometime folded. £7500The unpublished original of a letter to one of Darwin's network of non-professional natural history correspondents. Such communications and support were immensely valued by Darwin and were of crucial importance to the steady accumulation of factual detail that was central to his scientific method and research. 'If there was was any single factor that characterised the heart of Darwin's scientific undertaking it was [his] systematic use of correspondence. Darwin made the most of his position as a gentleman and scientific author to obtain what he needed. He was a skilful strategist. The flow of information that he initiated was almost always one-way. Like countless other well-established figures of the period, Darwin regarded his correspondence primarily as a supply system, designed to answer his own wants . . . . "If any man wants to gain a good opinion of his fellow men, he ought to do what I am doing, pester them with letters", he once said to John Jenner Weir' (Browne, vol 2, p 12).J. J. Weir (1822-1894) was Controller General H.M. Customs and an enthusiastic amateur naturalist. Darwin thought him a 'very good man' and held Weir's observations and information on natural history in the highest esteem. In another letter he told Weir that he had 'read over your last ten (!) letters this morning, and made an index of their contents for easy reference; and what a mine of wealth you have bestowed on me'. Weir visited Darwin at Down House in September 1868, with Alfred Russel Wallace and J. D. Hooker as fellow guests (see Freeman, Companion, p 299). The two were regular correspondents on a variety of natural history matters for 13 years (the Calendar of Darwin's correspondence, p 643, records over seventy exchanges between them between 1868 and 1881).The Calendar of the Correspondence of Charles Darwin, 8919, records this letter (and identifies the recipient) on the basis of Darwin's copy in the Darwin Papers at Cambridge University Library, but did not know the whereabouts of the original, offered here, which is addressed 'My dear Sir', not to Weir by name; Darwin Correspondence Project 8919 (summary only)

        Saison en enfer

Brussels Alliance Typographique (M.-J. Poot et Compagnie) 1873 - A Fine Copy of Rimbaud’s First Book, "A Season in Hell" RIMBAUD, Arthur. Une Saison en enfer. Brussels: Alliance Typographique (M.-J. Poot et Compagnie), 1873. First edition of Rimbaud’s first book and the only book he published in his lifetime. Cover title. Twelvemo. 53, [1, blank] pp. (Measures 7 1/4 x 4 7/8 in; 184 x 124 mm.). Original wrappers printed and red and black. Contemporary inscription on title page from Rimbaud enthusiast. Minor foxing to front cover, else a fine copy. Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell. Une Saison en enfer was written when Rimbaud was only 20 years old and his intense relationship with Verlaine was unraveling. After borrowing money from his mother, Rimbaud met with Poot, the publisher to have his poems issued. In October 1873 when the volume was printed, Rimbaud could not pay for more than a dozen copies (those he sent to his friends). The remainder copies were sent to the printer's basement. In 1901, Leon Losseau, a lawyer from Mons, Belgium, and a Rimbaud enthusiast discovered the remainder of the edition. He gave this copy to another Rimbaud enthusiast, Colonel Simon Godchot, with the inscription " Au Colonel Godchot qui s'interesse tant a Rimbaud. 18.2.38 Leon Losseau". He published Arthur Rimbaud ne varietur in 1937. "A work variously interpreted as his submission to, and continued denial of, religion. It consists of nine fragments (prose and poetry) of remarkable psychological retrospection and of desperate spiritual confession and self-examination. In the last—Adieu—the poet abandons the hells he had deliberately entered in search of experience. The work, published at Rimbaud’s expense in October 1873, was poorly received and he burnt the manuscript and his papers" (The Oxford Companion to French Literature). "Two hundred and fifty copies were printed and for many years it was thought that Rimbaud had destroyed most of them. But in 1901 the bulk of the edition was discovered in the storeroom of the printer, with whom Rimbaud had left it and who had never been paid. A large number of copies had been ruined by rust and rot and these were burned in the presence of a notary" (Baudelaire to Beckett 387). HBS 67516. $19,500 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Une saison en enfer EDITION ORIGINALE

Bruxelles: Alliance typographique (M.J. Poot & Cie), 1873. Fine. Alliance typographique (M.J. Poot & Cie), Bruxelles 1873, 12,5x18,5cm, broché. - First edition published in small numbers and account holder. Anecdotal and insignificant foxing affecting margins of three leaves. Of great rarity, the first edition of A Season in Hell is a major bibliophile piece on several levels: only book published by the will of Rimbaud, a young unknown poet of nineteen years, discrete volume published at Copyright was never paid by Rimbaud. The printer therefore almost entirely preserved the draw that was forgotten in the workshop (Arthur Rimbaud got only a dozen copies available to his friends). The stock was found in 1901 by a bibliophile who blasted 425 copies in good condition, and the rest destroyed, damaged by moisture. The curious composition of the book is also a remarkable feature of this valuable edition: no cover page and title or concluding pages (the text begins abruptly after the coverage ends and the same), the 17 white pages interspersed here and there in the book, and of board the shells and misspellings that dot the text are many sights studied by scholars. C. Bataillé devotes an important article in the Journal of Literary History of France (2008/3 -Vol. 108) and concludes that editorial will and perhaps authorial presides over this amazing layout. Sought after a collector and very early bibliophiles, this legendary edition was generally connected luxuriously and remains today very few copies "as published". --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!
