Meriyasu orikata [trans.: Technique of Manufacturing Jersey].

Many woodcut illus. in the text. 35 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. Tokyo: 1873. First edition in Japanese of what seems to be a translation of Illustrated Instructions of Setting up and Running the Bickford Family Knitting Machine (eds.: 1868 & 1872). The "Dana Bickford Family Knitter," manufactured in Brattleboro, Vermont, was a small knitting machine which could be operated by women. The text was translated by Shigeki Nishimura (1828-1902), an educator and leader of the Meiji Enlightenment in Meiji period Japan. The text describes how to operate the machinery and the illustrations depict the machine, its parts, and the variations of woven fabrics. The final leaf provides a list of Japanese manufacturers of jersey. This is the first book on manufacturing jersey to be published in Japan and marks the beginnings of an industry which became very important to the economic success of the country. Fine copy. WorldCat locates only the National Diet Library copy. .

[London: by the Author, 1873. Hand-coloured lithograph by J.Wolf and H.C.Richter, printed by Walter. A beautiful image from John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain: "A magnificent work with life-like portraits of birds of the British Isles" (Wood) Gould's illustrations were all painstakingly coloured by hand, as he states in his Preface: "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however, is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand." Cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 102; cf. Nissen IVB 372; cf. Sauer 23; cf. Six lettres autographes signées, décembre 1871 - novembre 1873.

      - 1873 - Phnom Pen, 1/12/1871, feuille double, 13,5 X 21 cm. 4 pages. ; Hong Kong, 9/11/1872, feuille double, 13,5 X 21cm. 3 pages ; Shangaï, 6/02/1873, feuille double, 10,5 X 13,5 cm. 4 pages ; Shanghaï, 19/04/1873, 2 feuilles doubles, 13,5 X 21 cm. 8 pages ; Hanoï, 6/11/ 1873, feuille double, 13,5 X 21 cm. 2 pages ; Hanoï, 22/11 (1873), feuille double, 13,5 X 21 cm. 2 pages.

Prijs: € 600,- (incl. lijst, BTW margeregeling).

Slave-catching in the Indian Ocean. A record of naval experiences.

London, Longmans, Green & Co. (colophon: printed by Spottiswoode & Co.), 1873. - 8vo. VIII, (4), 503, (1) pp. With 8 steel-engraved plates including the frontispiece (the 5 signed ones engraved by Pearson) and a folding map of the Indian Ocean, Red Sea and the Gulf, hand-coloured in outline (lithographed by Edward Weller). Red cloth. First edition (only edition until a 1968 facsimile) of a very detailed and well-illustrated account of a British naval campaign to suppress the East African slave trade in the years 1868 to 1870, published only eight years after the end of the United States' Civil War and the abolition of slavery there. Slavery was not outlawed in the Ottoman Empire (which at the time of publication included Egypt and what is now Iraq) until 1882, and in Iran and most of the Gulf States not until the 20th century. The author, Captain Philip Howard Colomb (1831-99), was Commander of the HMS Dryad from 1868 to 1870 and led the campaign. He operated primarily in and around the Gulf, Oman and Zanzibar and captured seven slave ships during those two years. The illustrations show the Dryad and some of the slave ships, individual and group portraits of slaves encountered during the campaign, and views of ports where slave trading occurred. One of the group portraits was engraved after a photograph made by one of the Dryad's officers and other illustrations after drawings by other officers. The map ("The slave trading waters of the Indian Ocean") shows the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, Red Sea and the Gulf, including Madagascar and the other islands. The first chapter relates Colomb's voyage to Aden, where he took command of the Dryad, and the next two chapters provide extensive background information to place the account of the campaign in context. Colomb's account of his own campaign includes chapters on individual regions (Bombay, Muscat and Oman, the Gulf, Madagascar, Zanzibar, etc.) and on various topics (slaves on board ship, the slave market, etc.). Colomb was promoted to Admiral after his retirement from active duty. The book is sometimes mistakenly ascribed to his younger brother, John Charles Ready Colomb. - With very minor foxing in the folding map and the page facing it, but otherwise in fine condition. Garrick, "Indian Ocean, post-exploration", in: Speake, Literature of travel and exploration (2003), pp. 608-610. WorldCat (4 copies). Arses Batantae, Sharpe (Large Frilled-necked Flycatcher)

London 1873 - John Gould (1804-1881) was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor, from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became and expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was able to meet with the country’s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, “A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.” For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. While in Papua New Guinea, he decided to embark on a final folio as a complement to his unprecedented “Birds of Asia”. “The Birds of New Guinea” was Gould's last full-scale work, left incomplete on his death in 1881. Gould completed twelve of the twenty-five parts, and the task of finishing the project fell to Richard Bowdler Sharpe, a superbly qualified successor, who had been Gould's colleague, assistant and friend. One of Gould's most exotic works, the five magnificent volumes of the Birds of New Guinea contain an extensive series of beautiful images of birds of paradise, bower birds, parrots, parakeets, cockatoos, kingfishers and hawk-owls. All of the 320 images are extraordinary for their color and artistry, interesting backdrops and animated compositions. Gould and Sharpe created some of their most engaging and active scenes of bird life in the “The Birds of New Guinea” , and the great popular reception of the work was such that it was one of their only productions that led to a sequel, Sharp's “Birds of Paradise” (1891-98). Missing from that later production, however, was the almost overwhelming variety of species of the “The Birds of New Guinea”, which, like the “Birds of Asia”, was the most comprehensive chronicle of the island's ornithology ever issued. This folio size, hand-colored lithograph, Arses Batantae, Sharpe, measures 21.5" x 14.5" and is in mint condition. Commonly called Large Frill-necked Flycatcher or Monarch, these birds are expertly hand-colored: the male on the lower leaf in black and white with a blue eye-circle and beak, the female in the middle in black and white, holding a bug, and a juvenile on top with rufous coloring, black face and blue eye ring.

London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1873. First edition. Extra Illustrated with forty-eight engraved plates (many mounted to size). Octavo (8 9/16 x 5 1/2 inches; 217 x138 mm.) . xvi, 372 pp. Bound by Morrell (stamp-signed on verso of front end-paper) ca. 1880 in three quarter dark blue crushed levant morocco over blue marbled boards ruled in gilt. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. A fine copy. The extra-illustrations include engraved portraits of Elizabeth Montagu, Queen Elizabeth I, David Garrick, George Montagu, Edmund Burke, William Pitt, Sir Philip Sidney, Edward Montagu, Thomas Gray, William Shakespeare, James Stanhope, Benjamin Franklin, Sir Joshua Reynolds, George Spencer, William Hogarth, Hester Piozzi, Hannah More, Samuel Johnson, Alexander Pope, Horace Walpole Francis Bacon and others.Elizabeth Montagu (1718-1800) was a British social reformer, patron of the arts, salonist, literary critic, and writer who helped organize and lead the Blue Stockings Society. Her parents were both from wealthy families with strong ties to the British peerage and intellectual life. She is sister to Sarah Scott, author of A Description of Millenium Hall and the Country Adjacent. She married Edward Montagu, a man with extensive holdings, to become one of the richer women of her era. She devoted this fortune to fostering English and Scottish literature and to the relief of the poor. In 1760, George Lyttleton encouraged her to write Dialogues of the Dead, and she contributed three sections to the work, anonymously. It is a series of conversations between the living and the illustrious dead and works as a satire of 18th century vanity and manners. In 1769, she published An Essay on the Writings and Genius of Shakespear. In it, she proclaims William Shakespeare the greatest English poet and, in fact, the greatest poet of any nation. She also attacks Samuel Johnson's Preface to Shakespeare from 1765 for not having gone on to praise Shakespeare's plays enough. While Johnson had dealt with text, history, and the circumstances of editing, Montagu wrote instead about the characters, plots, and beauties of the verse in Shakespeare and saw in him a championing of all things inherently English. When the book was initially published anonymously, it was thought to be by Joseph Warton, but by 1777 her name appeared on the title page. Johnson, for his part, was estranged from Montagu at this point. (Wikipedia).

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

James R. Osgood, 1873 First American edition, with the jellyfish design on the front board. Octavo, original rust colored cloth. With "The End" printed on page 303, illustrated with 109 plates, including two maps, with jellyfish on the front board, and the incorrect use of the word "Sea" in the title on front board. Although the reason for the scarcity is unknown, it is speculated that most of the Osgood copies were destroyed in the Great Boston Fire. Some of Verne's fiction has also become a fact: his submarine Nautilus predated the first successful power submarine by a quarter century, and his spaceship predicted the development a century later. The first all-electric submarine, built in 1886, was named Nautilus in honor of Verne's vessel. The first nuclear-powered submarine, launched in 1955, was named Nautilus, too. The film version was produced by Walt Disney in 1954 and directed by Richard Fleischer, won an Oscar for its special effects. Some wear on top of spine, but not recased and one of the best copies seen in recent years. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase. Firsts Magazine featured a blue copy of this edition on its cover in 1996, running an article raving that this is the "rarest milestone title in the science fiction genre, since it is known only by a handful of extant copies, perhaps 10 to 15." However, based on our experience, this is an exaggeration of its rarity. Still it is certainly a rare and important first US edition, especially in this condition. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase.

Vier Wochen französischer Geschichte, Rochau 1852, HOFBIBLIOTHEK

Rochau A.L. von, 1810-1873 - Vier Wochen französischer Geschichte, Rochau 1852, HOFBIBLIOTHEK WITTELSBACH-franz. Staatsstreich vom 2.Dezember 1851 Vier Wochen französischer Geschichte; 1. December 1851 - 1. Januar 1852; von A. L. von Rochau Avenarius & Mendelssohn ; Leipzig Kl. 8°, 18x11 cm., Hln., 166 S., gering stockfleckig. SEHR SELTEN, PROVENIENZ: HOFBIBLIOTHEK WITTELSBACH.

Paradisea Minor [Lesser Bird of Paradise]

[London: Daniel Giraud Elliot, 1873. Lithograph by J. Smit after Joseph Wolf, hand-coloured by J.D. White, heightened with gum arabic. A magnificent image from Elliot's Birds of Paradise, painted by Joseph Wolf, "without exception, the best all-round animal artist who ever lived' (Sir Edwin Landseer). Ornithological illustration reached its zenith during the golden age of lithography, and this image is from that great era. Even today, with all of the excellent methods of colour reproduction available, the beauty of hand-colouring cannot be equalled. Joseph Wolf is pre-eminent among the ornithological artists of the day: he was the first bird artist to fully understand and use the new freedom of style that lithography allowed. The lithographic crayon suited Wolf's drawing style, transforming his soft expressive lines and subtle suggestions of movement into a printable image. His work set a new standard in life-like representations and Wolf's skill at capturing the essential character of his subjects also breathed life into the stiff "bird on a perch" portrayals so characteristic of bird art of the day. The plates in Elliot's Monograph of the... Birds of Paradise , "almost as magnificent as the birds they portray, were the fruits of Elliot's considerable wealth, Wolf's great artistry and both men's profound knowledge and love of birds" (Dance). Elliot writes in the preface "The drawings of Mr. Wolf will, I am sure, receive the admiration of those who see them; for, like all that artist's productions, they cannot be surpassed, if equalled, at the present time. Mr. J. Smit has lithographed the drawings with his usual conscientious fidelity, and in his share of the work has left me nothing to desire... In the coloring of the plates Mr. J.D. White has faithfully followed the originals; and in the difficult portions where it was necessary to produce the metallic hues, he has been very successful." Cf. Anker 131; cf. Dance, The Art of Natural History , 1978, p.132; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990) p. 95; cf. Nissen IVB 296; cf. Wood p. 331; cf. Zimmer p. 207.

        [Grey Heron] Ardea Cinerea

[London: Taylor and Francis for the Author, 1873. Lithograph, coloured by hand and finished with gum arabic, by J. Gould & H.C. Richter, printed by Walter. A beautiful image from John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain: "A magnificent work with life-like portraits of birds of the British Isles" (Wood) This plate, from what Sacheverell Sitwell called "The most popular of all his works" (Fine Bird Books), shows a new liveliness of treatment that is not present in Gould's earlier works. This is thanks to suggestions made by Joseph Wolf, who drew 57 of the plates and accompanied Gould on an ornithological tour of Scandinavia in 1856. Gould's illustrations were all painstakingly coloured by hand, as he states in his preface: "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however, is not the case: every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered... it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought." Some woodcuts in the text. 35 folding leaves. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. Tokyo: 1873. First edition in Japanese of what we believe to be a translation of Henry Hartshorne's The Family Adviser and Guide to the Medicine Chest. A Concise Hand-book of Domestic Medicine (1868). Hartshorne (1823-97), a Quaker, took his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and was active during the cholera epidemic in Philadelphia in 1849. He later served as a field surgeon during the battle of Gettysburg. He held various professorships, including one at the University of Pennsylvania, and was active in women's rights, American Indian rights, education, public health, and philanthropy. Hartshorne was highly esteemed in Japan and his two most important books -- the other being A Conspectus of the Medical Sciences (1869) -- were promptly translated into Japanese. In 1893, he moved with one of his daughters to Japan and was active in missionary work. He also made notable efforts to prevent the traffic in opium. Fine copy. Post Route Map of the State of New York and Parts of Vermont Massachusetts Connecticut New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Also the Adjacent Portions of the Dominion of Canada

Washington, 1873. Engraved map on two sheets, period hand-colouring in outline, sectioned and linen-backed at a contemporary date. Two insets of Long Island and a portion of Canada. Sheet size: 56 3/4 x 64 inches. Housed in a contemporary brown cloth slipcase, title stamped in gilt on the covers. Provenance: John Henry Devereux, 1832-1886, President of the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis Railway (name stamped in gilt on the slipcase). Rare official Post Route map of the State of New York and vicinity, owned by the Civil War General in charge of all Union railroad lines and the President of a major railroad company following the war. Nicholson, who was responsible for setting up the topographical department of the Post Office during the Civil War, went on to serve as the official Topographer to the Post Office for 22 years. His maps focus on the postal routes and, naturally, towns, as well as political boundaries and railroad routes. Lakes, rivers and other waterways provide the only topographical detail. The postal routes are colour-coded to indicate frequency with which they are used (e.g., black for six times per week, blue for three times per week), with rail routes differentiated by cross-hatching. The distance for each route segment is also indicated. The map includes a legend and an inset table of distances between post offices. The official Post Office Department logo and motto ('With Celerity Certainty and Security') is also present. Nicholson's maps were originally published between 1866-1876, but it was essential to keep updating them, and to this end the map also includes a printed note "The Service on this diagram brought up to date of", followed by a space in which a manuscript date has been added. The relationship between the Post Office and the railroads began very early. The first known contract was in 1832, just two years after the maiden voyage of the nation's first steam locomotive, for transport of mail between Philadelphia and Lancaster, PA. On July 7, 1838, an act of Congress declared all rail routes to be postal routes, and the railways rapidly became the backbone of the postal system. While these maps were distributed throughout the Post Office Department, it is not clear how often these early issues of the maps were given or sold to non-governmental users, like the present. Devereux, the original owner of this map, was the President of the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Indianapolis Railway at the time of publication. He had served in the Civil War as the officer in charge of all the Union rail lines, eventually achieving the rank of General. Phillips, p. 517 (1881 issue); Cf. Virginia W. Mason.

Prijs: € 600,- (incl. lijst, BTW margeregeling).
