Numerous illus. in the text (one double-page & in color). 28; 42 folding leaves. Two vols. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper covers, modern stitching. Tokyo: 1872. First edition of this rare work, one of the two earliest books to introduce Western cooking techniques and recipes into Japan (the other is Kanagaki's Seiyo Ryoritsu, published in the same year). Both were written for the purpose of improving the nutrition of the Japanese. Vol. I describes Western cooking utensils including ovens, pots and saute pans, pans to poach fish, tableware, how to fold napkins, glasses, carving knives, decanters, serving dishes, candelabras, gravy boats, etc. Vol. II provides recipes divided by their ingredients: fish, meat, vegetables, and desserts. This is the first work to include the recipe for the beloved "curry and rice" which is still so popular in Japan. The illustrations depict the cooking utensils mentioned above. The double-page colored illustration shows four Japanese men at a Western-style dining table, being served Western foods by a woman. The four men and the woman are all dressed in Western-style clothes. Fine copy.

- MGG IV, 757.

The Art of Graining: How Acquired and How Produced. With Description of Colors and Their Applications. With Lithographic Illustrations of the Various Woods Used in Interior Finishing

Brief 21 pp. text including instructions on how to mix and apply colors to achieve the effect of wood graining, with specific instructions for various woods including oak, black walnut, rosewood, maple, ash, and chestnut, followed by 42 full-page color plates demonstrating a range of grains that can be replicated of the various types of woods with an eye towards their application in interior design. Scattered foxing, minor staining, several plates with minor damp staining at left side of margin, repairs to back endpaper. 4to. Cloth, minor rubbing to extremities, minor soiling. New York (Van Nostrand) 1872. The use of wood graining as a decorative technique in interior decoration was popular beginning in the 18th century. Light layers of paints and glazes were applied using specialized brushes and combs to imitate the appearance of wood grain patterns. While some decorative graining was very imaginative and whimsical, the examples included in this book mimic highly realistic and natural patterns of wood grain.

ALBERT N'YANZA, GREAT BASIN OF THE NILE, AND EXPLORATIONS OF THE NILE SOURCES

London Macmillan and Co. 1872 - A very early edition, one of the earliest in one volume format. With 34 illustrations, including 12 full-page plates and with a map printed in colours. 8vo, very handsomely presented in a contemporary binding of three-quarter red morocco over red pebbled cloth covered boards, the spine with gilt stippled raised bands multi-ruled in gilt, additional gilt work at the head and tail, gilt lettering in one compartment, endpapers and page edges marbled. xxvii, 499 pp. A fine and very handsome copy in all, internally unusually bright and fresh, free of foxing and very clean, the binding sturdy and very well preserved, the spine bright and with very little evidence of age or use. A VERY HANDSOME COPY OF THIS HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK. This is Sir Samuel Baker's account of his discovery of the last great source of the Nile, Speke and Grant having established Lake Victoria N'yanza as the source of the White Nile and Bruce discovering the source of the Blue. The waters of Victoria N'yanza flow into the basin of Albert N'yanza, which Speke and Grant were not permitted to visit, and the latter adds the accumulation of its watershed to the former to create the great White Nile, flowing massively from Albert N'yanza. The importance of the debate over the source of the Nile, combined with Baker's very readable writing style, made his books enormously popular, with the result that they were reprinted a great many times over the years. My Philosophical Development. [Beautifully Signed by Bertrand Russell]. [With chapters on Principia Mathematica and an Appendix with an essay by Alan Wood: "Russell's Philosophy - a Study of its Development"].

First Edition. 16cm x 24cm 279 pages. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket. Some mild signs of foxing. Otherwise in very good condition with only very minor signs of external wear. Very scarce book with the original signature of Bertrand Russell, one of the founders of analytic philosophy. Highly Collectable. Includes the following chapters: My Present Views of the World / Excursion into Idealism / Logical Technique in Mathematics / Principia Mathematica: Philosophical Aspects / Principia Mathematica: Mathematical Aspects / The Impact of Wittgenstein / Theory of Knowledge / The Retreat from Pythagoras / etc. Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell (18 May 1872 2 February 1970) was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, writer, social critic, political activist and Nobel laureate. At various points in his life he considered himself a liberal, a socialist, and a pacifist, but he also admitted that he had "never been any of these things, in any profound sense". He was born in Monmouthshire into one of the most prominent aristocratic families in the United Kingdom. In the early 20th century, Russell led the British "revolt against idealism". He is considered one of the founders of analytic philosophy along with his predecessor Gottlob Frege, colleague G. E. Moore, and his protégé Ludwig Wittgenstein. He is widely held to be one of the 20th century's premier logicians. With A. N. Whitehead he wrote Principia Mathematica, an attempt to create a logical basis for mathematics. His philosophical essay "On Denoting" has been considered a "paradigm of philosophy". His work has had a considerable influence on logic, mathematics, set theory, linguistics, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer science (see type theory and type system), and philosophy, especially the philosophy of language, epistemology, and metaphysics. Russell was a prominent anti-war activist he championed anti-imperialism and went to prison for his pacifism during World War I. Later, he campaigned against Adolf Hitler, then criticised Stalinist totalitarianism, attacked the involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War, and was an outspoken proponent of nuclear disarmament. In 1950 Russell was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought" (Wikipedia)

        THE PHOTOGRAPHIC WORLD

Benerman & Wilson, Philadelphia 1872 - 4tos., variable paginations, each issue calls for a mounted photographic plate which is missing in 4 issues: Vol. 1, No. 7; Vol. 2, Nos.14, 15, 16. Decorated stiff wrappers. 2 volumes (23 issues). Each volume is housed in a newly-made clamshell box. Volume 2 is lacking Issue No. 23. One issue with a replacement front wrapper; the front wrapper is detached on three issues, and a few issues have chips or tears to the wrappers; the others, with a few exceptions, are very good and mostly unopened. Issue No. 21, September 1872 contains an albumen portrait of George Armstrong Custer in buckskin and red kerchief by James A. Scholten. Between 1864 and 1870, THE PHOTOGRAPHIC WORLD, edited by Edward L. Wilson, was published as supplement to THE PHILADELPHIA PHOTOGRAPHER. It became an independent journal in 1871, and was absorbed in January 1873 with THE PHILADELPHIA PHOTOGRAPHER. The year 1871 is designated as Volume 1. The original photographs were made by G.W. Wilson, F. Grasshoff, Suddards & Fennemore, T.T. Sweeney, Wm. Kurtz, Jones & Stiff, Dinmore & Wilson, E. M. Klinedinst, J. A. Scholten, J. Landy, et al. A complete run, save the missing Issue 23 of November 1872. Appended to each issue is THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TIMES. Edited by Edward Wilson and published by Scovil Manufacturing Company, New York. The paginations vary and the numbering sequence extends that of THE PHOTOGRAPHIC WORLD. The publishing history is rather complicated and obscure for this serial. Walter Koelzer, in Photographic and Cinematographic Periodicals No. 18700 states, "Between 1864 and 1870 published as a supplement of THE PHILADELPHIA PHOTOGRAPHER. Became and independent journal between 1871 - 1872, and merged finally in January 1873 with THE PHILADELPHIA PHOTOGRAPHER. 1871 is called Volume 1" [Attributes: First Edition]

Ett år i stilla hafvet reseminnen från Patagonien, Chili, Peru, Californien, Britiska Columbia och Oceanien.

Lith. Art. Anstalt, Stockholm 1872 - Quarto, with 12 tinted lithographic plates; a very good copy in original decorated boards. Scarce and finely illustrated voyage account, including handsome lithographed portraits of the Hawaiian monarchs Kamehameha the Fourth and Kamehameha the Fifth. The author, Adolf Ekelöf, was a young Swedish lieutenant who sailed on the English frigate Zealous to the Pacific in 1867. In addition to descriptions of California and British Columbia, this book is particularly interesting for its Pacific material, with significant entries on Hawaii, Tahiti, and other South Sea Islands. Unusually, Ekelof provides both the music and words to an Hawaiian Folk Hymn and a Tahitian National Melody. The lithographic plates are well rendered - some are clearly produced from portrait photographs while others are based on marine and landscape sketches. Of the twelve plates, seven are of Hawaiian and Tahitian subjects. In addition to the plate of the Hawaiian monarchs mentioned above, the book includes portraits of Queen Pomare of Tahiti and a coastal scene at Waikiki. Backstrip and endpapers renewed. THE PHOTOGRAPHIC WORLD

Philadelphia: Benerman & Wilson, 1872. First editions. 4tos., variable paginations, each issue calls for a mounted photographic plate which is missing in 4 issues: Vol. 1, No. 1871 is called Volume 1"

LES EVANGILES DES DIMANCHES ET FETES DE L'ANNÉE Three Volumes (Royal Presentation Copy); PRESENTATION COPY inscribed and signed by Queen Margherita of Savoy, Queen-Consort of Umberto I, of the Kingdom of Italy, dated 1884

Bachelin - Deflorenne, Paris, France 1872 - IN FRENCH. Three magnificent quartos, measuring 11 3/8" x 8 3/4". contemporary brown tooled morocco, sectioned and ruled in blind, five raised hubs (six compartments), gilt edge, royal blue watered silk doublures. Elaborate gilt dentelles to insides of front pastedowns.Signed presentation copy on fly-leaf of first volume (dated 1888) from Queen Margherita, Queen-Consort of (her first cousin) Umberto I, King of Italy, who reigned from 1878-1900. The first and second volumes comprise the text of the Gospels ornamentally printed with brilliant and beautiful borders, and enriched with exquisite illuminated miniatures, which were select pages from celebrated manuscripts throughout Europe, ranging from the tenth to the sixteenth century, in brilliantly colored and gilded facsimile. The third volume is the Appendices. Some scattered foxing to part of this third (Appendices) volume, and minor rippling to the section with pasted-on photographs, and to a thirteen-page section of Volume I, -- certainly neither obtrusive nor image-compromising.Superbly colored by means of Henri Leon Curmer's pioneering chromolithographic technique which involved first photographing, then hand-coloring these powerful and storied images. Actual copies of nearly 80 miniature photographs of his engravings (lacking three) are affixed to pages of Volume III, and opposite, on the recto, a poem, or (frequently) a biblical quote. This Third volume is dated 1864, and features illustrative texts describing each manuscript, correlating them by page number to their place in the first two volumes, and in-depth articles about these famous illuminators, materials used etc., for Curmer was a true scholar and master of the lithographic arts. Curmer also gives his nod of gratitude in this third volume by listing all of his subscribers to this magnificent and brilliantly executed creation, including their name, title, country of origin, subscriber number, how many sets ordered, etc. At the end of the volume (III) are copies of Jost Amman's "Eygentliche Beschreibung aller Stände auff Erden", followed by Hans Holbein's 41 starkly stunning images comprising his (1538) Dance of Death woodcut series. Finally d'Aligny's copies of Simon Vostre's marginals (the key term "marginal" emphasizing little relation of these bordering miniatures, to the heart and soul of the book in which they appeared). This 1872 printing of the first two volumes was published posthumously by the firm of Bachelin-Deflorenne of London, a branch of the Paris concern, which purchased Curmer's "whole stock and copyright of his principle publications in Chromo-lithography" (The Athenaeum No. 2217, Apr. 23, 1870) from the widow Mrs. Curmer. The Athenaeum went on to say: "These Chromo-Lithographs.are undoubtedly the richest and finest of the kind ever published". The work was thusly advertised in The May 2nd, 1870 issue of THE BOOKSELLER, (then "the" magazine of the bookselling trade -- published in London since 1802): "Two Vols, 4to. Bound in morocco, rich gilt ornaments on sides, gilt edges. This most magnificent work is illustrated with a great number of Miniatures, printed in gold and colors, reproducing the finest paintings of celebrated manuscripts, viz: Le Lilvre d'Heures du Cardinal Grimani, les Heures de Bedford, &c., and numerous Borders, all in Chromo-Lithography, forming a kind of Encyclopaedia of the art of Miniatures during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It is, besides, illustrated with a great number of Wood-engravings, &c., after Wiercx, and other artists." The cost then, for a comparable publisher's copy in 1870, with the optional morocco, with case, was £36, which converts to around $3107 ($4180) in today's currently); the book was enormously costly to create. Some woodcuts in the text. 22 vols. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block printed title label on each upper cover, new stitching. [Japan]: 1872-75. First edition in Japanese of one of the two most important medical works by Henry Hartshorne, his Essentials of the Principles and Practice of Medicine (1st ed.: Philadelphia, 1867). Hartshorne (1823-97), a Quaker, took his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and was active during the cholera epidemic in Philadelphia in 1849. He later served as a field surgeon during the battle of Gettysburg. He held various professorships, including one at the University of Pennsylvania, and was active in women's rights, American Indian rights, education, public health, and philanthropy. Hartshorne was highly esteemed in Japan and his two most important books - the other being A Conspectus of the Medical Sciences (1869) - were promptly translated into Japanese. In 1893, he moved with one of his daughters to Japan and was active in missionary work. He also made notable efforts to prevent the traffic in opium. The translator was Kohei Kawada (1836-1905), a physician and author of several medical books. He held several high medical posts in the Japanese government's medical institute. This is a complete set in twenty-two volumes. Complete sets in nice condition are rare. Fine set. ❧ D.A.B., IV, pp. 368-69.
