London

London: Grant & Co.,, 1872. A Pilgrimage. Quarto. Contemporary red half morocco, spine gilt tooled in compartments with olive morocco label, beige cloth sides with gilt titles to front, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt..0 180 Doré engravings to full page plates and vignettes in the text. Armorial bookplate "Henderson" to front pastedown. London bookseller's ticket also to front pastedown. Covers superficially scratched and marked in places, light spotting to some tissue guards, but on the whole a clean copy, entirely sound in a handsome contemporary binding that is almost always found in a shaken state due to the size of the book. First edition, an exceptionally good copy, of Doré & Jerrold's beautiful and influential "Pilgrimage" around the great metropolis of 19th century London, Doré's chiaroscuro engravings reflecting the closeness and contrast of London's social classes. It was this aspect in particular that gained the book contemporary censure in English reviews, concomitant popularity in America, and enormous financial success in both countries.

        Autograph letter signed ("A. C. Swinburne"). Henley-on-Thames, 25. X. 1872.

1872. 8vo. 2 pp. on folded double leaf. To the Italian poet P. G. Maggi, who had in 1871 published a translation of Swinburne's "Blessed Among Women - To The Signora Cairoli". Swinburne expresses his sympathy for the cause of the Risorgimento and mentions his great Baudelaire elegy, "Ave Atque Vale": "I fear you must have thought me very negligent + discorteous not to have written to you before in acknowledgment at one of your letter of July last, + of the very beautiful version which you have done me the honour to make of my poem addressed 'Alla Signora Carioli:' which reached me without address, or I should at once have written to thank you for the great pleasure it had given me. Nothing, in fact, connected with my work, could give me so much happiness as to know that it found favour - or at least that my intentions found acceptance - in the sight if those Italians whose approval + sympathy I should esteem the truest honour + highest reward I could wish to earn. I wish only that the work were worthier, + more adequate to express my love of your country + its cause - which is the cause of Europe + of the world. - I have not by me a copy of my verses in memory of Baudelaire; but on the first opportunity I will desire my publisher to send you a copy. Your letter of July was directed to an address which I left two years ago; + thus, passing from place to place, it was some months before it came into my hands. I now hasten to acknowledge it + to apologize for the long but involutary delay [...]". - Traces of folds; one edge slightly gnawed (touching text). Includes a copy of Maggi's translation [16 pp. 8vo; Londra, 1871], as well a manuscript of the same, probably in Maggi's own hand (24 pp. 8vo).

        Ferns: British and exotic.

      - London, George Bell, 1872. In eight volumes. Large 8vo (25.0 x 17.2 cm). 1,394 pp. [I: x, 160; II: 162; III: 142; IV: 174; V: 168; VI: 136, [ii]; VII: 181; VIII: 261] with 479 chromoxylographs (coloured wood engravings) [I: 50; II: 66; III: 50; IV: 64; V: 56; VI: 50; VII: 66; VIII: 77], and one unnumbered b/w plate in vol. V. for a total of 480 plates. Original uniform red publishers decorated cloth. Boards with gilt embossed vignette of a fern; spines richly embossed and with gilt title, volume and number. Brown endpapers.= The magnum opus of the British botanist, malacologist, meteorologist and astronomer Edward Joseph Lowe (1825-1910). The illustrations are very accurate, resembling nature printing, and beautifully coloured. The plates were drawn by Alexander Francis Lydon (1836-1917) and printed by the famous B. Fawcett. Additional text engravings give taxonomically important details. Lowe received specimen from many contributors in Britain and abroad. Originally the work was issued in 120 parts between 1855 and 1860. Some book dealers report 480 coloured plates, but according to Stafleu & Cowan that is incorrect. Except the usual slight foxing on the endpapers of each volume and sunning of the spines a fine set in the attractive original publisher's binding. Partly uncut, thus with the widest possible margins. Nissen BBI, 1243. Stafleu & Cowan, 5040. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals

John Murray, London 1872 - vi, 374pp, index. 7 photographic plates, as called for (numbered with Arabic numerals). 1st Edition, 2nd Issue (with 'that' misprinted as "htat" on p. 208). 4pp of adverts (dated Nov. 1872). This book is an important member of Darwin's evolutionary set and it was written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment. It was to be one of the first books with photographs ever published, with seven heliotype plates. Darwin's publisher warned that this aspect of the publication "would poke a terrible hole in the profits". Bright spine gilt, no repairs, tight square binding, no foxing. Tasteful booklate to inside cover. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Orphan Colony of Jews in China, Containing Letters from themselves, with the Latest Information

London: James Nisbet, 1872. Good antiquarian condition. Crown 8vo. 124 pp. Original publisher's green cloth over bevelled boards (hinges weakening, extremities a little rubbed, upper joint abraded). Large bookseller's ink stamp of "Jas. Whitehead, Kaipoi" (New Zealand). Well read and highly interesting copy, heavily annotated by Joseph Taylor, a New Zealand, a miner cum theologian (!) The text itself is quite remarkable: the Chinese and the Jews belong to the oldest nations in the world, but while the Chinese have been, until recently, the most insolated and insular, it may be justly asserted that the Jews are among the most widespread and scattered. The author was British Consul at Jerusalem who began to interest himself in Chinese Jews. Finn reports that by 1870 the Jewish colony in China was declining, alarmingly and rapidly. Finn transcribes a letter that asserts that all the Rabbis had died there, and that there was no one left who could read Hebrew. Taylor's copious notes, underlinings in red and blue, and a number of long marginal notes in ink appear throughout. On the first blank is written: "Find in this - A Book within a Book - in Notes and Markings by Joseph Taylor." Taylor studied geology, mining, engineering and theology in Manchester. In 1894 he and his wife Annie immigrated to New Zealand where he established the Puponga coal mine at the top of the South Island. The subject of a recent biography, Taylor appears to have been tenacious and exceedingly difficult character. We was clearly an expert geologist, practical and logical in his methodology, but a poor businessman who was imprisoned for two years for embezzling company funds, and whose neglect of the management of the Puponga Mine was largely responsible for its deterioration. In religion he was a different man. He could be charismatic, winning a flock of admirers, and then turning on them as though he half hoped for some bizarre sort of religious martyrdom. The only other copy of this work currently on the market has been rebound, is unannotated, and is selling for $1066 (6/12/15)

[Slave Trade.] Class B. - East Coast of Africa. Correspondence respecting the Slave Trade and other matters. From January 1 to December 31, 1872. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by command of Her Majesty. 1873. [C.-867-I]. London, Harrison and Sons, 1873.

1872. Folio. IV, 69, (1) pp. Sewn, with remains of former spine. Rare British parliamentary papers and correspondence with local agents and officers on the slave trade, especially in Madagascar and off the south coast of Arabia. One item discusses the reported landing in Arabia of slaves from a French dhow, noting that "few French dhows go to Arabia without a few slaves who are sold" (p. 69). Comprises the sections "Zanzibar" (pp. 1-43); "Reports from Naval Officers - East Coast of Africa Station" (pp. 45-59); and "Appendix [Zanzibar]" (pp. 61-69). - A good copy. Bennett 495.

Tortoises, terrapins, and turtles. Drawn from life.

London, Henry Sotheran, Joseph Baer & Co, 1872. Folio (36.8 x 27.5 cm). iv, 16 pp., 60 lithographed plates (without numbers). Original blindstamped buckram. Spine gilt-ornamented at head and foot, and gilt title. Yellow endpapers.= One of the rarest books on turtles. The authors mentioned on the title page are in fact the artists. The first 40 plates were intended for a work by Thomas Bell, who wrote the original text for a work supposed to treat all the recent and fossil testudines. Some parts did appear in print, but when the publisher went bankrupt, the work was cancelled, and the original plates - of which few were published - as well as 20 new ones, were used for the present work, with a new text by John Edward Gray. Why Gray was not mentioned on the title page is quite a mystery. Perhaps he saw himself more as the editor of the work. Blindstamp in titlepage top margin; unobtrusive small, oval stamp on plate versos (not shining through). In all, a very good copy. Adler p. 35; Nissen ZBI, 1701; Wood, 1872.

Tortoises, terrapins, and turtles. Drawn from life.

      - London, Henry Sotheran, Joseph Baer & Co, 1872. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Rare Victorian Vellum Manuscript - Firearms Patent with Large Wax Seal Issued to American Inventor

England, 1872. "For Improvements in Fire-Arms" [England], 25 July 1872. Manuscript Victorian patent document on vellum, folded and docketed, a rare and excellent example of a patent of invention for a guns, granted to William Edward Blake of New York City. Large printed document completed in manuscript and measuring approximately 76 x 51 cm, with original blue paper revenue stamp for five pounds, and a double-sided yellow wax seal measuring 16 cm in diameter. Small perforation at fold, age-toning to verso, otherwise in very good and original condition, a lovely and bright document, as issued, with a scarce large Victorian wax seal in its original round tin case. A round black tin container houses the massive double-sided yellow wax seal, diameter 16 cm (6.25 inches), attached to the document by original red plaited cords, one side being the Great Seal of the Realm, the other being Queen Victoria seated on a fully caparisoned royal horse. Diminutive fissures to sides of seal, otherwise in very good original condition, with vivid and crisp wax impression. The Commissioners of Patents' Journal, September 1872 issue, records this patent, no. 2224, being granted provisional protection for six months, as also stated in the document itself. Rare official patent document for an invention for "improvements in fire-arms" valid for fourteen years and issued to William Edward Blake, an inventor from New York City. Patent number 2224 was valid in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the Channel Islands, and Isle of Wight, with the condition that the specified stamp duty payments were remitted at the times specified, one hundred pounds being payable in the seventh year after the initial patent issue date, for example. Excerpt from the patent: "... Whereas William Edward Blake of the City of New York, United States of America, hath by his petition humbly represented to Us that he is in possession of an Invention for Improvements in Firearms, which the inventor believes will be of great public utility, that he is the first and true inventor thereof... that the same is not in use by any other..." End Excerpt In the following year, 1873 William Edward Blake would receive at least one patent from the United States Patent Office, "for improvements to gun-stocks and spades, patent number 135,624." Blake described this dual-purposed instrument to be especially useful to American soldiers, in particular the Corps of Royal Sappers, Miners, and Engineers, by reducing the weight and number of tools carried over long distances. In essence he devised a two-in-one gun and spade by affixing a small shovel to the gun-stock which served dually as the shoulder rest when firing. It is conceivable that the present patent, valid in the United Kingdom, was for the same apparatus. Little is revealed about Mr. Blake in the present document, apart from his American citizenship and skill in manufacturing firearms for improved efficiency. Further research, however, may find the inventor to be a relation or even a partner of other Blake family gun makers. For example, John Henry Blake, was the manufacturer of a bolt action 7-shot revolving magazine sporting rifle, which was similar to a military type tested by an Ordnance Board of Governor's Island, New York, in July 1891. Blake, P. & E. W. of New Haven, Connecticut, manufactured Model 1821 muskets; the two partners are believed to have been the nephews of Eli Whitney Sr., and also to have been the trustees of the Whitney Armory from 1823 until Eli Whitney Jr. came of age in 1842. And earlier, the firm French, Blake and Kinsley, musket makers, secured a contract for 4,000 stand of arms on 20 October 1808, having delivered at least 2,175 units by 7 October 1812. The Great Seal of the Realm or Great Seal of the United Kingdom (prior to the Treaty of Union the Great Seal of England, then until the Union of 1801 the Great Seal of Great Britain) is a seal that is used to symbolize the Sovereign's approval of important state documents. Sealing wax is melted in a metal mould or matrix and impressed into a wax figure that is attached by cord or ribbon to documents that the monarch wishes to make official. Queen Victoria had to select four different Great Seal designs during the sixty-three years of her reign. England's patent law began to be criticized in the 1850s, for obstructing research and benefiting the few at the expense of public good. According to historian Adrian Johns, the campaign "remains to this day the strongest ever undertaken against intellectual property", coming close to abolishing patents altogether. Despite much public debate, the system wasn't abolished, though it was reformed with the Patent Law Amendment Act of 1852. This simplified the procedure for obtaining patents, reduced fees and created one office for the entire United Kingdom, instead of different systems for England and Wales and Scotland. Around the same time, however, an anti-patent movement began to take shape, and would continue until the early 1870s, spirred by inventors, entrepreneurs, and radical laissez-faire economists. Prominent activists included Isambard Kingdom Brunel, William Robert Grove, William Armstrong and Robert A. MacFie. A new sequence for numbering patents also began in October 1852. Patents applied for between October and December 1852 were numbered from 1-1211. For each subsequent year patents were numbered in annual sequences beginning with the number 1. This system was in place until 1915. . Very Good.
