        Cock Robin

New York:: R. Shugg & Co. /Rutherford Park Press,, 1872.. First printing. Original Wraps. Very Good in Wraps. A scarce survival. Very Good condition. Large Quarto (29.5 x 23.5 cm. 11.5 x 9.25 in.) Color illustrated and printed wraps. Cotton stitched. [8] p. [6] color plates. Publisher's advertisement; "Juvenile Classics from the Rutherford Park Press. Beautifully illustrated in oil colors" with complete series list and Copyright 1872 by R. Shugg & Co. printed on on rear wrap. Overall toning, edge tears- archivally repaired. The stitched binding is exposed with traces of gummed residue, indicating a later repair. Cock Robin is one of the two titles in the 'Merry Christmas Series' from the Juvenile Classics, and although R. Shugg & Co. published another version of the story with silhouette illustrations, this is the only issue of the colored Quarto edition. The six chromolithograph plates are richly printed in multiple colors from as many as twelve stones to create the lively and vibrant illustrations. Although based on the traditional Nursery Rhyme the arrangement of the text is unique and differs from that of the 1744 edition of Tom Thumb's Pretty Song Book- the first printed reference to the rhyme. In this rare Shugg edition every one of the helpful birds and beasts are present- just appearing in different order. This is a scarce survival. There are no copies listed or documented, and the OCLC shows only one library holding, which is at Yale University. In addition there is very little known about the firm of R. Shugg & Co. beyond an obsure directory listing: Shugg, Richard; listed in New York City directories as an engraver between at least 1858 and 1868; in 1869 listed with the term, "books" in 1870 the directory contains an entry for R. Shugg & Co. (LOC). There are no references in Opie, Pritchard, Osborne or Cotsen to this work. The Death of Cock Robin is a traditional English folk song/Nursery rhyme with suggested origins dating back centuries and a colorful list of royal, mythologic and political associations from Norse Gods, William II of England, Robert Walpole and Robin Hood.

Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In

New York: D. Appleton and Company,, 1872?-4. A delineation by pen and pencil of the mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, water-falls, shores, cañons, valleys, cities, and other picturesque features of our country. With Illustrations on Steel and Wood, by Eminent American Artists. 2 volumes, quarto (312 × 239mm). Publisher's brown hard-grain full morocco, decorative blind-tooled spines, elaborate floriate borders on sides, all edges gilt, white moiré endpapers, Steel-engraved frontispieces and vignette titles, 45 steel-engraved plates, numerous wood-engraved illustrations in the text. A little rubbing to extremities otherwise a very good set in the publisher's de luxe binding. First edition of this monumental work of celebratory Americana, edited by the American Romantic poet William Cullen Bryant. The majority of the superb plates were engraved by Robert Hinshelwood, a Scottish engraver who emigrated to America in 1835 where he established a considerable reputation for his work on landscapes. His painstaking and highly detailed work was much appreciated not only by the publishing houses that employed him, such as Appleton's and Harper's, but also by the Continental Bank Note Company who for a time employed him producing plates for currency. In her recent study of Picturesque America, the historian of American graphic arts, Sue Rainey, notes that the book "enabled Americans, after the trauma of the Civil War, to construct a national self-image based on reconciliation between North and South and incorporation of the West" (Creating Picturesque America, 2001, p. xiii).

Fine copy. ---- Norman 494; Garrison-Morton 2483. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, very rare. "Cohn's three papers, published in the journal that he founded and edited, are among the seminal works of bacteriology. The first paper (part I), originally published in 1872, effectively initiated the science: it contained Cohn's new system of bacteria classification, in which he distinguished four groups of bacteria based on their constancy of external form and linked this constancy to certain physiological phenomena. The second paper (part II) announced Cohn's discovery of thermoresistant spores produced by certain bacteria, which could survive even prolonged intense heat in a sealed container; this discovery explained what had long been a puzzling anomaly, and dealt a convincing blow to the doctrine of spontaneous generation." (Norman 494). A third part was published in 1876. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The wonders of the Yosemite Valley, and of California

1872. KNEELAND, Samuel. The Wonders of the Yosemite Valley, and of California.xii, [13] - 79, [1 (blank)] pp. Each page of text with a red-rule perimeter border. Illustrated with 10 albumen photographs taken by John P. Soule. 8vo., bound in publisher's green stamped cloth.Boston: Alexander Moore, 1872Second Enlarged Edition. Professor Kneeland's guide to Yosemite was first published in 1871 following his visit to the region in 1870. He traveled from Cambridge (he taught at MIT) to California on the "Pacific Railroad' and accounts the experience more stimulating and healthful (and cheaper) than a vacation in Niagara, Saratoga, or the other popular vacation spots of the East. The photographs, though small at 3.25 x 5.5 inches, are beautiful. This second edition contains 2 maps and an additional 8 pages of text not in the first edition, including an unattributed quotation from John Muir (on page 74) regarding protecting the natural beauty of Yosemite from the abuses of private owners - the first appearance of John Muir in book form.Unacknowledged use is also made of Muir's eyewitness account of the March 1872 earthquake felt in Yosemite and described by Muir in a letter to MIT president Dr. J.D. Runkle. Kneeland had read extracts from the letter to a meeting of the Boston Society of Natural History and the description of the earthquake is retold on page 78 here. The second editon with two additional chapters, "The Yosemite in 1872." and "The Recent Earthquake in Yosemite." not found in the first edition published the year prior.       - First Edition, pamphlet 8vo, original printed wrappers (these with slight chipping at edges), a very good copy, Oxford, Parker, 1872. WMGC, 88. Carroll's sustained satire on the architecture of the new bell-housing at Christ Church, Oxford - the most amusing of his Oxford "squibs." Though put to a local semi-political purpose, these pieces are wholly Carrollian in their use of comic word-play and surreal invention. Photograph available on request.

        THE TYLER DAVIDSON FOUNTAIN.

Cincinnati: Robert Clarke & Co., . 1872 - [2],117pp. plus thirteen original albumen photographs. Frontis. Quarto. Contemporary three quarter black morocco and brown cloth, ornate gilt spine, a.e.g. Minor wear to extremities, heavier along hinges. Slight tanning and occasional foxing. Very good. One of 100 copies intended for special presentation, after the first edition of the same year (smaller in format, without the photos), of this elaborate production commemorating the unveiling of the Tyler Davidson fountain in Cincinnati in 1871. The statue was a gift to the city by Henry Probasco, a prominent local businessman, and named for his brother-in-law and partner, Tyler Davidson. The present work includes thirteen original albumen photographs which illustrate the fountain's romantic design and its place in the city. Despite Probasco's desire to avoid certain overused iconographic images, such as Neptune, the final design still evokes certain clichés. A record of correspondence between Probasco and the municipal council comprises the second part of the work. "One hundred copies only of this edition were printed by Mr. Probasco for presents, and it is said they cost twenty dollars each. The photographs are very fine.altogether it is a work worthy of the noble object it portrays" - Thomson. Probasco was also a major book collector, and an elaborate catalogue of his library was later produced by Joseph Sabin. OCLC 7959165, 8094560. SABIN 64049. THOMSON 935.

Berlin, 18. Mai 1872.. 3¾ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo..

Ruy Blas. Drame en 5 actes, en vers

Exceptional sending the author to his mistress Juliette Drouet, "first copy the feet of my lady." From its inception to its late opening, the Ruy Blas history is interwoven with that of Juliette Drouet. Recluse home throughout the writing of the play, Juliet was the first reader, August 12, 1838 (Hugo finished writing 11). She immediately falls in love with this romantic drama that Hugo promises the title role alongside Frederick Lemaitre: "What a miracle that your room, my poor beloved, and you're good to me to have done admiring the first ! I had never heard anything so beautiful. I do not even except your other masterpieces. It is a rich, magnificence, dazzled (...) Oh my sunshine, you blinded me for a long time. " Soon, Juliet knows the play by heart, some fiercely referring to the relationship of the poet and actress, "Madam, under your feet, in the dark, a man is there who loves you, lost in the night that the veil; Suffering, earthworm in love with a star; Who will give for his soul, if necessary; And that is dying down when you shine above "(Act II, Scene 2). August 15, Hugo confirms him the role of the queen. Juliet could not hope for a better proof of love: "I see the glory, happiness, love and adoration, all in gigantic dimensions and impossible ..." Unfortunately, far from the glory predict expected This new mark the beginning of the open Adele, who was previously little involvement in her husband's adulterous relationship war. At the end of the summer, Adele writing to the theater, "I see the success of the compromise part (...) because the role of the Queen was given to a person who was a member of the fuss made to Mary Tudor . (...) The opinion (...) is unfavorable (...) the talent of Miss Juliet. (...) This lady is said to have relations with my husband. - While personally convinced that this noise is completely devoid of merit, (...) the result is the same. (...) I have some hope that you (...) give the role to someone else. ". This will be the mistress of Frederick Lemaitre will inherit. Juliette does not hide his dismay: "I carry the grief of a beautiful and admirable role that is dead to me forever. (...) I have more than you can imagine grief. "And even if Ruy Blas does not meet the expected success, his passion for the play remains intact:" I shed my blood for you, for your part. " On 5 December 1867, when the Odeon planning a revival of the play, Napoleon III made the ban because "it is not necessary that the scandal of Hernani is renewed." Juliette is still affected by this injustice that Hugo, as evidenced by his voluminous correspondence. His letters on the subject are collected in the book by Paul Souchon (Around Ruy Blas. Unpublished Letters of Juliette Drouet To Victor Hugo, Albin Michel, 1939). For years, she campaigned for his rehabilitation and, when Ruy Blas 1872 has finally met at the Odeon, and says she attends every step of this resurrection. So at the end of the first reading of Hugo comedians, January 2, 1872: "Victory, my beloved great! Deep and enthusiastic audience with all your emotions. (...) Ruy Blas from beginning to end is the masterpiece of masterpieces. I'm out of there dazzled, delighted, loving you, admire you and adore you as the first day I heard you. It was about me, just now at home, who was the most moved and transported to the author and the play. I am ashamed to tell you so bad, but I yield to the needs of my heart full of your genius and love. Here you are, my loved, I hasten to kiss your wings and feet. "With Sarah Bernhardt in the role of the queen, the play is a triumph that will grow over the performances. The day after the first, Juliette says that expected for more than thirty years consecration: "You see, my beloved, as I told you the truth about the amazing and wonderful enthusiasm of the spectators yesterday. Never you don '[en] have been able to have and do bigger. It was a general frenzy that was increasing with each verse. Your sublime poetry subdued all souls and the fragrance of worship out of all hearts we felt. The thunderous applause was so loud and so continuous that gushed electric sparks from all hands. (...) As for me, I feel in this blessed month renewal of love and I think all my sweet memories bloom again and perfume my soul with happiness. And I would submit to your feet divine bouquet. "It was Victor Hugo who finally deposits" at the feet of [his] lady "this masterpiece of romanticism as a token of their mythical love. Michel Lévy frères Paris 1872 12x19cm relié

Report of a reconnaissance of the basin of the upper Yellowstone in 1871. Letter from the Secretary of War, accompanying an engineer report of a reconnaissance of the Yellowstone River in 1871. April 18, 1872. 42nd Congress, 2d Session. Ex.Doc. No. 66. Senate

[Washington, D.C.]: [Government Printing Office], 1872. First edition. Modern brown cloth with gilt titles. A very good+ copy, small bookplate, with expert repair to bottom edge of first leaf, large folding map skillfully silked on reverse at each fold, in a fine modern binding. 8vo. Illus. with a folding lithographed map. 69 x 30.5 cm. (27 x 12 inches). The first recorded visit to Yellowstone Park was made by John Colter in 1810 when he took refuge there from hostile Indians. No one believed his story of what he saw there, nor did they believe that of the next visitor, Joseph Meek, in 1829. Finally, in the 1850's the region was described in considerable detail in the writings of Father DeSmet, the famous Jesuit missionary, who had obtained most of his information from the mountain man, Jim Bridger. In 1859, Capt. W. F. Reynolds led a government expedition to the area, but it brought back little information and was discredited by a public dead set on not believing what was there. Finally, in 1870, N. P. Langford and H. D. Washburn led a well-equipped, thorough expedition that not only established the facts about the region but also led directly to the creation of Yellowstone National Park on March 1, 1872. Langford was appointed the first Superintendent of the Park, which was the Federal government's first program for preserving any extensive area of the national lands for public use. The magnificent park included over two million acres in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, and included some of the most beautiful and breathtaking area in the country," Jenkins (JJ100-299). Includes the scarce map of the upper Yellowstone with much detail of the area surveyed. Provenance: From the library of Kenneth E. Hill, with his bookplate. Howes B145. Wheat Transmississippi 1220. Eberstadt 134-445.
