        Notes sur Cuy-Saint-Fiacre et Molagnies.

Cuy-Saint-Fiacre, 1871.

The Land of Charity:" - A Descriptive Account of Travancore and its People. With Special Reference to Missionary Labour

John Snow and Co., London 1871 - x, 370 pages + frontispiece and six plates. Illustrations, map, musical notation. Full nineteenth century leather, paneled spine decorated gilt with title label, cover edges ruled in gilt and blind. With the bookbinder's stamp of Seton & Mackenzie. *** An account of missionary labours in this area at the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent which contains a wealth of historical, archaeological, environmental, linguistic and ethnographical details. - The binding of this book displays interesting evidence of its ownership history over the century since its publication: Originally issued as a school prize for the Edinburgh Collegiate School, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, with the school crest stamped in gilt on front cover. The book-plate of the latter school prize was then removed from the front inner pastedown and replaced by one for the Dennistoun Congregational Church Sabbath School as a prize for special services in collecting for the missionary fund, dated 1909. On the rear pastedown is a twentieth century engraved book plate of (William) Anthony Caswell, designed in a surreal and erotic style by the french artist François Righi. *** Some foxing to the text-block, otherwise a very good copy of the uncommon first edition, without any damage, library stamps, inscriptions or other markings.         The Trial of the Red Jacket

Berlin: Storch & Kramer, 1871 - SPLENDID SCENE OF ICONIC WITCHCRAFT TRIAL Chromolithograph. 25 3/4 x 38 1/2 inches sheet. This climactic work, based on the composition by J. M. Stanley, shows chief Red Jacket (1758-1830), the well-known leader of the Seneca tribe of the Iroquois Nation, on trial for charges of witchcraft. This famous trial is supposed to have taken place around the year 1800. The present work shows a pivotal moment in the trial’s proceedings, which take place in a forest setting. Being the great orator that he is, Red Jacket appears here to be making an impassioned speech in defense of himself. The Iroquois tribesmen who surround the chief wear tense expressions as they watch him speak. Visible under the chief’s white robe is the red jacket given to him by a British officer for his help as a messenger during the American Revolution. Notably, there are also two white men among the circle of Native American auditors of the trial. One is the painter Stanley, who imaginatively inserts himself in the scene, though in fact he wasn’t born until 14 years after the trial supposedly took place. The other is the Reverend Samuel Kirkland, a Presbyterian missionary to the Iroquois. The Reverend’s appearance in the picture may be Stanley’s reference to Red Jacket’s most famous speech, "Religion for the White Man and the Red" (1805), in which he powerfully called for religious tolerance for Native American spiritual beliefs. John Mix Stanley grew up in Buffalo, New York and trained as a portrait painter. In 1842, he traveled to the American West to paint the life of Native American tribes. In 1852, he mounted a significant exhibit of more than 150 works at the Smithsonian Institution. In 1854, he exhibited a 42-part panorama of Western scenes at major cities in America, including New York and D.C. Over 200 of his paintings, maps, and other works being stored at the Smithsonian were destroyed during an 1865 fire. Today his few surviving works are exhibited by national and regional museums in the US. He painted the present work many decades after the supposed event. Catalogued by Xueli Wang, Columbia University, BA; Courtauld Institute of Art, MA. You are warmly invited to visit our gallery at 1016 Madison Avenue in New York City to view this work whenever it might be convenient. It is my intention to have highly competitive prices.         2 Eigenh. Brief m. U. [Wohl Wien], 13. IV. und 20. VI. 1871.

1871. Zusammen 2 SS. 8vo.

After All, Not to Create Only

Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1871, 1871. First book edition of a poem that was originally published slightly earlier in broadside format. Myerson A6.2; BAL 21405, binding B.. Just the slightest wear; fine, bright copy, enclosed in a chemise and quarter morocco slipcase (which is scuffed).. 8vo, original green cloth, gilt lettering. Whitman's "American Institute Poem" which later became known as the "Song of the Exposition," which he read before the annual meeting of the American Institute of New York, an organization that promoted technology in New York City. The first issue binding was of flexible cloth (green or terra-cotta); this second issue is in dark green cloth over boards with beveled edges and is noticeably larger than the first issue. According to Myerson, in 1889 David McKay (then Whitman's publisher) took remainder sheets of the original issue and had them bound in cloth and boards. This title in its first issue binding is quite common; in this second, larger binding in boards, it is very scarce.

DOUBLE PLAY Or, How Joe Hardy chose his friends

Lee, Shepard and Dillingham, Boston 1871 - (viii), 244 pages; Clean and secure in original green cloth binding with gilt lettering and gilt image of a baseball and a baseball bat at spine. Faint inscription in pencil on first blank "S.F. Sweetser / from / M. Warren" An attractive example of this scarce baseball novel. This book Double Play was Everett's second novel featuring a baseball theme (the first was Changing Base published in 1868). This book involves a game between the local Starlings baseball club and their challengers The Wide-Awakes from a nearby town. The style of their new pitcher Wheeler is much discussed and there is some play by play description of at least one of the games. William Everett (1839 – 1910) was born in Watertown, Massachusetts, the son of U.S. Secretary of State Edward Everett. He graduated from Harvard University in 1859, from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1863 and from Harvard University's law department in 1865. He tutored at Harvard University from 1870 to 1873, then was promoted to assistant professor of Latin, a position he held till 1877. He became master of Adams Academy in 1878.         The First Flight. (All plain sailing)

London: J. McQueen, 1871. Aquatint, printed in colours and finished by hand, by William Summers. Second issue of this fine print (first published 21 October 1867) from the 'McQueen's Steeple Chasings' series.A charming period piece. Very much of its time, all the animation in this plate is reserved for the spectators. The jockeys are depicted as completely impassive "there is more animation in a Sovereign's Escort of Life Guards trotting down the Mall on a wet morning than can be found in... Summers' engraving of these supposedly thrilling scenes" (Charles Lane Sporting Aquatints and their Engravers , vol.II, p.76). Lane presents this as a fault, but it is also what gives this image its charm, everything is beautifully observed, and the aquatinting is technically excellent, the landscape is finely realised and the crowd is full of incident but at the centre of the scene are these almost surreal figures passing through as if in a dream. Little is known of either Neville (Lane lists this and one other racing plate by him), or the engraver William Summers.Lane British Racing Prints p.143.

Pianta del Palazzo Peretti alla Terme Diocleziane, restaurato, nelle pitture, per ordini di Sua Eccellenza il Sig. Principe Don Camillo Massimo. Dall’Artisto Cav. Prof. Annibale Angelini; 1871 e 1872

      - Oblong folio (350 x 450 mm). With 32 watercolors of high quality by Annibale Angelini delineated from the original frescos. Original red pebbled cloth (shaken), upper cover with the crowned monograph of Prince Camillo IX (Vittorio Emanuele) Massimo. In excellent unrestored state. An important discovery. This album of watercolors is the only surviving record of the once spectacular frescos and interiors of the elegant garden Casino Felice of the Villa Peretti Montalto alle Terme (later known as the Villa Massimo), built for Sixtus V by famed Roman architect Domenico Fontana. After centuries of neglect, the Villa, its two palaces, and its lush gardens were destroyed in the 1880s in order to make way for the central railroad station in Rome, the Roma Termini. The long-lost frescos of the Casino Felice are of the greatest interest to scholars of Renaissance Italian art: among the artists were C. Nebbia, F. Rosselli, D. Cresti (called il Passignano), G.P. Severo, L. Mainardi and G. Stella. All iconographic depictions of the these frescos survive only in the present album of watercolors. Situated on the highest point in Rome (on the Esquiline Hill overlooking the Diocletian Baths), the Villa Peretti Montalto was the palatial home of Cardinal Montalto Felice Peretti (b. 1521) who became Pope Sixtus V in 1585. Construction of the Villa and gardens continued unabatedly until the Pope died in 1590. The 160-acre Villa became the largest and most luxurious ever built within the Aurelian walls. The Pope’s ambitions knew no bounds. In order to provide fresh water for the palace and its vast gardens, fish ponds, fountains, fruit trees, and cypresses, Sixtus commissioned Fontana’s brother Giovanni to engineer and build an aqueduct fifteen miles long (!) which came to be known as the Acqua Felice. Despite the tragic destruction of the Villa, and the complete lack of documentation of its art and architecture, the present manuscript allows us, for the first time since the 19th-century, to study and partially reconstruct the pictorial decoration of the interiors of the Casino Felice. The existence of the present manuscript was discovered by Patrizia Tosini in the archives of the Massimo family, but the manuscript itself was presumed lost (Tosini, 2015). The Villa Peretti Montalto had two palaces. The Casino Felice, the favored residence of Sixtus and the subject of the present manuscript, was built first (1578-1581), while Peretti was still a Cardinal. Then, as Pope, he authorized his sister Camilla Peretti to build the Palazzo alle Terme (1586-1588). The Casino Felice was situated on an elevated place in the gardens, and consisted of three floors. Although it was the smaller of the two palaces, it was more secluded, and Sixtus preferred to stay there according to Fontana. The present manuscript was created by Annibale Angelini in 1871-1872 for the then owner of the Villa Peretti Montalto, Prince Camillo IX (Vittorio Emanuele) Massimo (1803-1874). Angelini (1810-1884) was Prof. de Geometria, Propet. et Ottica nell'Accad. di S. Luca (Perugia). It was his intent to "restore" the Casino Felice, but as we can see from his watercolors in the present album, this would have taken years. Angelini’s patron, Vittorio Emanuele Massimo, died the following year and the project was abandoned. By 1888 the Casino Felice was completely destroyed. Vittorio Emanuele had long been interested in the history of his beloved Villa; in 1836 he published the single most important monograph on its history, the Notizie istoriche della villa Massimo alle Terme Diocleziane. The text describes the layout of the Casino Felice in some detail, and a floor-plan of the 1st floor was given (plate V, p. 137), but no illustrations of the frescos or interior decorations have ever been published. Based on solely on Massimo’s descriptive text, a theoretical reconstruction of the interiors of the Casino Felice was proposed by Sigrid Epp and Rita Torchetti, who in addition offer a possible [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The eminent chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur writes to an unidentified recipient, addressed simply as "Monsieur", requesting some changes in an unspecified manuscript (evidently of a partially biographical nature).         Journal of the Legislative Council of Prince Edward Island, Anno Tricesimo Quarto Victoriae Riginae, First Session of the Twenty Fourth General Assembly

      E. Reilly & Co., Herald Office, Prince Street, Charlottetown [PEI] 1871 - 359 pages; Tan library buckram, spine with full-length dark leather label lettered in gilt; marbled endpapers and text-block edges. With the engraved bookplate of the U. S. Department of State, paper library label mounted to the base of the spine, small oval State Department accession stamp on the verso of the title page, card pocket mounted to the rear paste-down endpaper; red ink Surplus-Duplicate stamp on the front free endpaper (certifying that this copy is properly de-accessioned from government ownership). This volume is clean and well preserved, with other library marks than those mentioned above -- (no perforations, stamps in the interior, etc.) There are a few pencil notes, and marks, but these are highly interesting and suggest that this copy had a particularly interesting role in the history of its time -- the final years during which Prince Edward Island was still resisting pressure to join the new Dominion of Canada. The residents of Prince Edward Island may have been isolated by maritime geography, but they were united in taking pride in their Island and its legislative independence from 1851 onward. Even so, with the Charlottetown Conference of 1864, PEI had been the site of the first meeting which eventually led to the eventual adoption of the Articles of Confederation and the creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867, making the Island in some respects the birthplace of the idea of Canada. Despite this founding status, Prince Edward Islanders did not find the terms of union with Canada favorable in 1867, and its legislature choose to remain a part of Great Britain and Ireland at that time. The reasons were mostly economic. PEI was wholly dependent on agriculture and fisheries, with products exported mostly to the United States of America and Europe and the UK. Canada had a similar profile, mostly devoted to agriculture, and with ample fisheries of its own. Locals feared that entering the newly-created Canada's complex structure of tariffs and regulations would force islanders to purchase all the goods they needed from Canada, send their taxes to that Dominion's government. But, on the other hand, the economic realities of their size and relative isolation, along with the Dominion's regulatory structure, would offer them almost nothing in return. PEI was relatively densely populated; the island, virtually without minerals, had to support a population of about 90,000. The unique complications of the ownership of the limited amount of land was also a factor. Under the historic land grants from the Crown, nearly the whole Island was owned by absentee proprietors who had no willingness to sell land to their tenants, the actual residents of the Island. The new Canadian Dominion government certainly wanted to add PEI to its Dominion. And for various reasons, the British Crown also wanted PEI in the Dominion, if only to uncomplicate their obligations with regard to the defence of their North American territory. The Dominion government sweetened the terms of union to PEI in 1869, but the local legislators still resisted becoming Canadians. A new interested party inserted itself in the discussion in the form of a delegation sent to PEI in 1868 from the Congress of the United States seeking to reistablish trade reciprocity. The heart of the matter was the crucial issue of fisheries. Briefly, after the initial creation of the Dominion of Canada, regulations and tariffs in the ports of Nova Scotia and Halifax had the effect of sending most United States fishing vessels working the waters of the northeast to PEI and Charlottetown, in order to buy and sell their catch, secure provisions (especially fresh water, salt and provisions for the crew) as well as necessary repairs. This vast increase in trade was making various PEI residents rich, and their Canadian neighbors resented this, to say the least. The British Crown issued regulations which closed this advantage to PEI, and this, understandably, proved hightly unpopular. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New York, New Era Publishing Company 1871-74 - 1st edition. Period style quarter-leather, 8vo, v, 539; v, 469; ii, 636 pages [1656 pages total]. Singerman S250. Jonathan Sarna, in "American Judaism, " notes that "A liberal Jewish periodical entitled the New Era, initiated in 1870 by Rabbi Raphael De Cordova Lewin, promised to 'advance mankind in true religious knowledge and to united all God's children in a common bond of brotherhood. ' By its third volume, it claimed the second largest circulation 'of any Jewish organ. ' (p. 124) . A total of 6 volumes were published. The New Era reports on Jewish and larger cultural and scientific concerns of the day from a liberal Jewish perspective. For example, the Journal was important in exposing conditions at the Hebrew Orphan Asylum in New York [For an extensive discussion of Lewin’s examination and expose in the pages of The New Era, see Hyman Bogen’s "The Luckiest Orphans: A History of the Hebrew Orphan Asylum of New York" (Urbana-Champaign, 1992) ] A sampling of articles from these 3 complete volumes is below. Raphael De Cordova Lewin (West Indies, 1844 - New York 1886) studied in London, and then came to the United States, leading Jewish congregations in Shreveport, Louisiana, Savannah, Georgia, and Brooklyn, New York. In addition to "The New Era, " he also published a short-lived Jewish monthly in Jamaica ("The Guide ") , a weekly ("The Jewish Advocate") , "What is Judaism? " (1870) and other works. Ferris and Greenberg note in "Jewish Roots in Southern Soil, " that Lewin married the Rabbi Abraham Einstein's daughter Adeline in 1867 in Augusta GA, the same year Abraham became president of Savannah's Mickve Israel, and son-in-law Lewin was hired to be leader of the reform congregation—a position from which he was fired, apparently for being too Reform. Korn (1866) notes that "Additional biographic detals about Lewin, whose middle name was Da Costa, are given in Jacob A. P. M. Andrade, 'A Record of teh Jews in Jamaica' (Kingston, 1941) .The Occident [and] The Israelite (Cincinnati) .Lewin continued to write, edit, and publish until his death in 1886."
