        Autograph letter signed.

Down, Beckenham, Kent, 11 Nov. [1870]. - 8vo. 3 pp on bifolium. On Darwin's embossed letterhead (Down, Bromley, Kent, S.E.) with "Bromley" crossed out and changed to "Beckenham" in Darwin's hand. To Philip Lutley Sclater, who has been reading the proofs of Darwin's "Descent of Man", describing the ornithologist William Henry Hudson (1841-1922) as "a hater of evolution": "I will most gladly accept your kindness. I look at the delay caused as nothing comparatively to the great benefit. I never expected or hoped for many criticisms, but I still hope you will point out any serious error, whatever trouble this may cause to my Printers. I suppose I shall soon receive Revises, but Messrs Clowes [the printers of The Descent of Man] sometimes delay the 2d proofs till 23 of a whole vol. is corrected in first proof. - Mr Hudson's paper is very interesting & it pleases me to see so staunch a hater of evolution a little staggered at the end of his paper [.] I will not now waste quite so much time in trying to find every name quoted in some book; so you will doubly help me". - One of the earliest known examples of the use of the term "evolution" in the Darwinian sense, pre-dating its first appearance in print in "The Descent of Man". Although the term had long been in use in embryology, having been introduced with a specific meaning in 1762 by Charles Bonnet in his "Considerations sur les corps organis

        Original study for The Sirens

1870. BURNE-JONES, Edward. Large original study for The Sirens. No place, circa 1870. Colored chalks on brown paper, handsomely matted and framed. Image measures 14 by 18 inches; entire framed piece measures 19 by 25 inches. $16,500.Splendid original chiaroscuro colored chalk drawing, a large preliminary compositional study for The Sirens.Burne-Jones, leading painter and designer of Victorian England and among the most important of the Pre-Raphaelite artists, is best known for his collaborations with William Morris, for whom he designed stained glass and tapestries and illustrated some of the Kelmscott Press publications, including the magnificent 1896 Kelmscott Chaucer. Of his own haunting work he stated, “I mean by a picture a beautiful romantic dream, of something that never was, never will be— in a light better than any that ever shone— in a land no-one can define or remember, only desire— and the forms divinely beautiful” (Chilvers, 79-80). This beautiful work is a preliminary compositional study for The Sirens, which Burne-Jones began to paint in 1870 but, despite many attempts over two decades, was never able to finish. The allegory of shipwreck does, nonetheless, appear in other of his works, including The Voyage to Vineland (stained glass window) and The Holy Grail (tapestry). A pastel [circa 1875] in a Spanish private collection and a watercolor [circa 1875] in the South African National Gallery are both reminiscent of this drawing. Exhibited: Mass Gallery (1967); Piccadilly Gallery (1971); Grolier Club (1971). Provenance: Virginia Surtees; Hartnoll and Eure; Kenneth A. Loft; Frederick R. Koch; Sotheby’s.A lovely original work, wonderfully framed.

        Paris 1870-1871 (title from spine)

Bound album containing eight portfolios of 12 etchings each, for a total of 96 original etchings, half of the images by Martial-Potémont, the other half by his contemporaries, all pertaining to the upheavals in Paris in 1870-1871, with most of the images printed on full-page sheets of Japanese paper (sheet size approx. 12" x 17", image sizes varying), and with some smalller images mounted on sheets. Some of the portfolio title pages with creases and small tears. Scattered foxing and soiling throughout, mostly minor, but several images more severely affected. Folio. 3/4 leather and boards, raised spine. Rubbing to extremities, some minor leather loss along spine, soiling and areas of fabric loss to back cover. Paris 1870-1871. A spectacular album comprised of numerous complete portfolios of etchings by Martial-Potémont, Maxime Lalanne, Edmond Yon, F. Pierdon, and Léopold Desbrosses, all important French graphic artists from the late 19th century. Martial-Potémont is perhaps the most well-known of the group: a prolific etcher, his work was primarily published and distributed by Alfred Cadart, a leading print publisher in Paris in the second half of the 19th century. He was also a friend of the Barbizon artist Charles-François Daubigny, and exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1846 to 1882. His comprehensive work, L'Ancien Paris, comprises 300 etched views of the city. The etchings included in this album depict specifc aspects of the turmoils in Paris along with related incidents and themes, and provide a comprehensive and detailed overview of the events of 1870-1871 and their effects on the city and its inhabitants. Many of the images also contain significant textual context and information. A significant archive, rare to find assembled in one collection. The portfolios included in the present album are as follows: Souvenirs Artistiques du Siège de Paris 1870-1871 by Maxime Lalanne; Paris Pendant la Siège, Paris Incendié, Paris Sous la Commune, and Les Prussiens Chez Nous, all by Martial-Potémont; St. Cloud Brulé! by F. Pierdon; Paris et Ses Avant-Postes by Léopold Desbrosses; and Aujour de Paris Aprés la Guerre by Edmond Yon.

        Corsaire Triplex.

Paris: Ancienne Libraire Furne, c. 1870. Quarto, engraved title in red and black, extensively illustrated; a bright fine copy in the original lavishly decorated pictorial cloth with bevelled boards, all edges gilt. A fine copy of this beautifully illustrated deluxe edition of Corsaire Triplex, in which the daring heroes Armand and Robert Lavarède travel to Australia and the Pacific on the "Karrovarka", an electric floating fortressThis delightful story, with its uncommon Australasian theme, is by the French adventure writer Paul d'Ivoi, and is part of a series of works published as the Voyages Excentriques. The series was intended to capitalise on the tremendous fascination with the works of Jules Verne, and certainly makes a striking visual comparison with the glorious editions of Verne published around the turn of the twentieth century. This work was written by "Paul d'Ivoi", actually the writer Paul Deleutre (1856-1915). Deleutre came from three generations of writers, beginning as a journalist writing for Le Journal Des Voyages and the newspaper Le Matin. In time he become one of the most successful writers of juvenile adventure novels, and ultimately published some 21 volumes for this series.Deleutre's work is famous for its adventurous plots and fast pace, even when compared with the novels of Jules Verne. Cosaire Triplex follows the story of Robert Lavarède who flees to Australia and meets the "Corsaire Triplex", although many of the plot devices are now considered variations on Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea. In his novels, Deleutre's heroes often circumnavigate the globe and dive under the sea on fantastic futuristic machines and use modern technology including cinematography, the telephone and submarines. The work is lavishly illustrated with many engravings, some full page, and a further 8 full paged tinted lithographs all by Louis Tinayre (1861-1941).

A collection of 17 broadsides, 2-page publications, and pamphlets.

Guatemala: Various publishers/presses, 1870–79. All items folio. For Guatemala the 1870s were years of a Liberal government and 19th-century Liberal reforms: confiscation of Church property and the concomitant excloistering of nuns and monks, improved sanitation, improved supervision of food handling, economic reforms, securing a free press, bringing telegraphy and the railroad to the nation, and improving the police force and public education.    The decade began with the 1871 overthrow of Vicente Cerna Sandoval's Conservative regime and then saw other military actions including the putting down of the 1872 attempted coup d'etat by the recently ousted Conservatives; and because that failed plot was supported by the government of Honduras, Guatemala went to war with its neighbor.    The collection touches on war, politics, reform, public health, and reaction to reform. The 1870s saw changes in the printing industry in Guatemala; printing could be done on thinner paper and this collection bears witness to that, with some chipping at edges, some brittleness over all, and some items damp-damaged with loss of blank areas (only). Over all, good to very good condition, with a very few exceptions.

THE LUCK OF ROARING CAMP and Other Sketches

1870. [the handsome "Blairhame" copy] Boston: Fields, Osgood, & Co., 1870. Original terra cotta cloth. First Edition. This is Harte's third and best-known book, one which he spent the rest of his life unsuccessfully trying to equal. These tales had originally appeared in the Overland Monthly, of which he was the first editor; the title story had appeared in 1868 in its second issue ("under publisher's protest... The religious press called it 'immoral,' California papers thought it 'singular,' but Eastern critics went headlong into eulogies" [K&H]). The volume also includes such Harte throbs as "The Outcasts of Poker Flat," "Miggles" and "Mliss"; an additional tale, "Brown of Calaveras," would be added to the (later in 1870) second and subsequent editions.~This copy is in terra cotta "FL" cloth (with a texture similar to laid paper); Blanck cites copies in fine-pebbled "C" cloth in green, purple and terra cotta, but had seen "FL" copies only in green and purple. It is in close-to-fine condition (scarcely any wear, but the spine gilt is not quite as bright as it could be). This is an American classic, increasingly difficult to find in collectible condition. Blanck 7246; a Johnson High Spot ("The first stories written by a westerner about the westerners in the western vernacular, the earlier western writers being so afraid of being called 'unliterary' that they ignored the crude but powerful material at hand"). Housed in a handsome morocco-backed slipcase, this copy bears the small leather "Blairhame" bookplate of the noted collector Mrs. J. Insley Blair.

Finnish Lutherans set up a mission in Ondangwa, seat of the kings of Ondonga, in 1870, and the present primer was probably intended both to help Finnish missionaries preparing for life in Africa learn Ndonga and for them to use in Ondonga to teach the natives to read and write their own language and to promote Christian ideas. In very good condition, with only very slight browning.       Paris: Librairie Ducrocq, circa, 1870. Small oblong quarto, with decorated and letterpress title-pages and 24 full-page coloured lithographs by Lehnert; original gilt blocked red papered boards boards. Charming children's book, with 24 oblong lithographic plates and a decorated title page. The book illustrates a somewhat portly kangaroo, with accompanying descriptive text, as well as other antipodean species such as the emu, cassowary and crocodile. The author, Jules Rostaing (born 1824) was a well-known writer on all manner of books for children, including a similar publication on the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. The book includes a lithographic decorated title reading "Le Jeune Naturaliste" followed by a letterpress title-page bearing the variant title "Le Petit Naturaliste". To further complicate matters, it was issued in both illustrated and plain lettered boards (this copy being an example of the former, with a handsome gilt-blocked deer and giraffe). Nonetheless, this book is not listed in the Gumuchian catalogue under either variant of the title, although some 12 titles by Jules Rostaing are included. It is uncommon, only appearing once on the market in the past two decades, and is not retained in Australian institutional collections. Boards rubbed, spine ends frayed, internally very good.

Classic Confederate General E Lee cabinet card photo

n.p., ca. 1870. 3.75" x 5.5". "Cabinet Card of Robert E. Lee in his classic portrait image. 3.75"" x 5.5"" set on a card to a dimension of 4"" x 6.5""Produced by Kottman portraits, Altoona, Pa. with full photographer description covering the verso. Slightly grubby with a few very faded stains. Signed in plate. (Not Robert E. Lee's original signature on photo).Owing to the larger image size, the cabinet card steadily increased in popularity during the second half of the 1860s and into the 1870s, replacing the carte de visite as the most popular form of portraiture. The cabinet card was large enough to be easily viewed from across the room when typically displayed on a cabinet, which is probably why they became known as such in the vernacular. However, when the renowned Civil War photographer Mathew Brady first started offering them to his clientele towards the end of 1865, he used the trademark ""Imperial Carte-de-Visite."" Whatever the name, the popular print format joined the photograph album as a fixture in the late 19th-century Victorian parlor.A wonderful example of this important historical Confederate General during the U.S. Civil War who led southern forces against the Union Army. His battles climaxed with the three-day stand-off, known as the Battle of Gettysburg, which almost destroyed his army, ending Lee's invasion of the North and helping to turn the war around for the Union. This beginning of the end continued when by the summer of 1864 Ulysses S. Grant gained the upper hand, decimating much of Richmond, the Confederate's capital, and Petersburg. By early 1865 the fate of the war was clear, a fact driven home on April 2 when Lee was forced to abandon Richmond. A week later, a reluctant and despondent Lee surrendered to Grant at a private home in Appomattox, Virginia.Lee has been quoted as having said, ""I suppose there is nothing for me to do but go and see General Grant,"" he told an aide. ""And I would rather die a thousand deaths."" By the end of the war, Lee was saved from being hanged as a traitor by a forgiving Lincoln and Grant, and returned home to his family in April 1865"

        The Quadrupeds of North America.

New York: George R. Lockwood, 1870 - 3 volumes, octavo. Publisher's deluxe binding of brown full morocco, blind stamped decoration to spines, titles to spines gilt, blind stamped rules and decoration to boards, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Some rubbing to binding, with minor wear to extremities. An excellent, clean set. Illustrated with 155 hand-finished lithographic plates. Final edition. Having made his reputation with "The Birds of America", Audubon began an equally imposing project "The Quadrupeds of North America". Audubon travelled the entirety of North America, including British and Russian territories, the USA and parts of Mexico collecting specimens to use as models for his paintings, his ambition being to paint every North American species. From the perspective of the Quadrupeds his career unfolds with new fascination, leaving a fresh impression of his genius. John Bachman, Audubon's long-time collaborator, said of the Quadrupeds: "They are the most beautiful and perfect specimens of the art. I doubt whether there is anything in the world of natural history like them, I do not believe that there is any man living that can equal them" (Ford 1951). Audubon's Quadrupeds "is a breathtaking accomplishment . the most naturalistic depiction of American mammals ever done" (Legacies of Genius 128). The work first appeared in three folio volumes from 1845-8. In order to reach a wider audience, the Audubons then prepared this edition in octavo, which was issued in 31 parts and then bound volumes between 1849 and 1854. They referred to it as a "miniature" of the grand folio edition. Sabin 2368.

Pansy's Wish: A Christmas Fantasy, With a Moral

Boston: Published for the Mass. Homeopathic Hospital by Marion & Co., n.d. [probably 1870] - First Edition; presumed second printing; original printed wrappers; an excellent copy. The Bibliography of American Literature (#270) devotes a lengthy discussion to the printing history of this book. In brief, the book was produced by the two young daughters of Aldrich's Beacon Hill neighbor and intimate friend, Dr. Israel Talbot for sale at a fair held to benefit the hospital. Apparently, the first printing was done on a cheap amateur press that Marion Talbot owned, and she reprinted the pamphlet on a more expensive "Novelty" press which she found for sale at the local Mechanics' Fair.
