L'ÉCLIPSE JOURNAL HEBDOMADAIRE POLITIQUE, SATIRIQUE ET ILLUSTRE 1870 annata completa

Paris Imp. G. Towne 1870 - L'ÉCLIPSE JOURNAL HEBDOMADAIRE POLITIQUE, SATIRIQUE ET ILLUSTRE settimanale satirico francese Annata terza Grande volume in-folio (cm 50 x 34 ca.) Legatura muta in mezza pelle, piatti marmorizzati, tasselli, filetti e titoli in oro al dorso.

HISTORY OF DON QUIXOTE. The Text Edited by J. W. Clark and A Biographical Notice of Cervantes, by T. Teignmouth Shore

London Cassell, Petter, and Galpin [c. 1870] - A very early issue of this wonderfully illustrated Cervantes. With 118 spectacular illustrations by by Gustave Doré. Royal 4to (12.25 x 9.75 inches approx.), in deluxe three-quarter dark-brown polished calf over black textured boards, the spine with gilt tooled wide bands separating compartments featuring large central gilt tooled devices, one compartment gilt lettered, all edges gilt. xxviii ,737. A tight and clean copy, the binding with a bit of age wear, the back sometime skillfully restored to style with the original spinal panel laid down. A HANDSOMELY BOUND COPY. Gustave Doré was one of the greatest illustrators of his day. He was born in Strassburg in 1832. In 1848, he moved to Paris where "his facility as a draughtsman was extraordinary." He was a prolific worker and his subjects were usually religious or historical. He died in January of 1883. His grand and magnificent style is a perfect complement for Cervantes heroic tale. This massive tome is one of our favorite printings of the Spanish classic and, because of the weight of the text block, is usually found broken and loose. This copy is as sturdy as one could hope for and is very handsome too. A great compliment to any fine library and a must for the collector of 19th century illustrated books. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Salt [bound collection of pamphlets]

1870. (GARFIELD, James) HUNT, T. Sterry, et al. [Bound collection of 13 pamphlets relating to the production and taxation of salt]. Montreal, et al.: Dawson, et al., 1870-72. Thirteen pamphlets bound in one volume. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter brown morocco rebacked to match original, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers. $2500.Interesting, annotated collection of pamphlets relating to the mining, manufacture and imposition of duties on salt, compiled and bound together for then-Congressman James A. Garfield, with his bookplate.“Although in 1868 Garfield supported the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson, he felt increasingly uncomfortable in the role of firebrand. His interests shifted to matters of financial policy. He advocated lower tariffs (except for items produced in his district) and was an avid crusader for hard money. He worked tenaciously for these policies on the House Ways and Means Committee and as chairman of the Appropriations Committee during the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses” (ANB). These pamphlets were all printed during this time, 1870-72, and many present positions for or against the abolition of the salt duty being considered at that time. This volume includes:1. HUNT, T.         Trient. Italienische Landschaften.

1870. Cromolitografia applicata su cartoncino di cm 33x26. Buono, ordinari segni d'uso e del tempo. Scheda bibliografica tratta da Wikipedia. Rottmann was born in Handschuhsheim (today a part of Heidelberg) on 11 January 1797. There he received his first drawing lessons from his father, Friedrich Rottmann, who taught drawing at the university in Heidelberg. He formed himself chiefly through the study of nature and of great masterworks. In his first artistic period, he painted atmospheric phenomena. After gaining prominence with Heidelberg at Sunset (a water color), and Castle Eltz, he settled in Munich in 1822 and devoted himself to Bavarian scenery. Here his second period began, and in 1824 he married Friedericke, the daughter of his uncle, Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell, who served as an attendant at court.\rThrough this connection, he made the acquaintance of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who in 1826/27 sponsored his travels in Italy in order to widen his repertoire, which up to that point consisted solely of domestic, German, landscapes. In Italy, Rottmann made sketches for the 28 Italian landscapes in fresco which he was commissioned to paint in the arcades of the Hofgarten at Munich. The cycle, completed in 1833, gave visual expression to Ludwig's alliance with Italy, and raised the genre of landscape painting to the height of history painting, the preferred mode of the King's other great commissions for monumental painting. The frescos unfortunately deteriorated under climatic influences. The cartoons for them are in the Darmstadt Gallery.\rIn 1834 Rottmann traveled to Greece to prepare for a commission from Ludwig for a second cycle; one might mark here the beginning of his third period. At first also intended for the Hofgarten arcade, the 23 great landscapes were eventually installed in the newly-built Neue Pinakothek where they were given their own hall.\rOf his easel pictures, Ammer Lake and Marathon are in the National Gallery, Berlin; The Acropolis of Sikyon and Corfu in the Pinakothek, Munich; others in the Schack Gallery, Munich, and in Karlsruhe; and seven in the Leipzig Museum.\rCarl Rottmann died on 7 July 1850 in Munich, aged 53 of undisclosed causes. He is buried in the Alter Südfriedhof in Munich.

HISTORY OF DON QUIXOTE. The Text Edited by J. W. Clark and A Biographical Notice of Cervantes, by T. Teignmouth Shore

London: Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, [c. 1870]. A very early issue of this wonderfully illustrated Cervantes. In 1848, he moved to Paris where “his facility as a draughtsman was extraordinary.” He was a prolific worker and his subjects were usually religious or historical.

On Darwin's embossed letterhead (Down, Bromley, Kent, S.E.) with "Bromley" crossed out and changed to "Beckenham" in Darwin's hand. To Philip Lutley Sclater, who has been reading the proofs of Darwin's "Descent of Man", describing the ornithologist William Henry Hudson (1841-1922) as "a hater of evolution": "I will most gladly accept your kindness. I look at the delay caused as nothing comparatively to the great benefit. I never expected or hoped for many criticisms, but I still hope you will point out any serious error, whatever trouble this may cause to my Printers. I suppose I shall soon receive Revises, but Messrs Clowes [the printers of The Descent of Man] sometimes delay the 2d proofs till 23 of a whole vol. is corrected in first proof. - Mr Hudson's paper is very interesting & it pleases me to see so staunch a hater of evolution a little staggered at the end of his paper [.] I will not now waste quite so much time in trying to find every name quoted in some book; so you will doubly help me". - One of the earliest known examples of the use of the term "evolution" in the Darwinian sense, pre-dating its first appearance in print in "The Descent of Man".
