Map of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway and Connections; Map of the Mexico National Railway, Including Its Proposed Extensions and Connections, Showing Also the Relative Position of Mexico to the United States the West Indies, and the Adjacent Oceans

Albert von MotzMap of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway and Connections;Map of the Mexico National Railway, Including Its Proposed Extensions andConnections, Showing Also the Relative Position of Mexico to the United Statesthe West Indies, and the Adjacent OceansPhiladelphia: National RailwayPublication Comps., 1872The Denver & Rio Grande railroad was established in 1870 by soldier and railroad builder General William Jackson Palmer as a narrow gauge railway system with the grand plan of connecting Denver with Mexico City. The line was notable for its many engineering achievements, including the highest railroad beds in the United States and the first large-scale application of narrow gauge road. At one time the railroad had more narrow gauge track than any other line in North America. Palmer was one of the few U.S. entrepreneurs who desired to connect the country in a north-south orientation and was especially singular in his desire to extend his railroad into Mexico, a goal which he eventually accomplished by working in Mexico itself. Although the railroad was eventually absorbed by the Union Pacific, its final achievements were noteworthy. It ran the last passenger train in the West after the creation of Amtrak, and its scenic trains operate even today in Colorado and New Mexico. The report with its detailed maps to stockholders is by no means a dry corporate production. In fact, it is an enthusiastic promotional of Colorado by a passionate visionary. Palmer declares: ?The idea of a north and south railway, following the eastern base of the Rocky Mountains from the principal city of the new West-Denver-southward to Mexico, arose from a conviction that this belt of country had especial advantages in its location, climate, and natural resources.? Palmer sets forth the advantages and potential in the region, including mining, stock raising, agriculture, natural resources, and towns waiting to spring forth. For example, he warmly promotes the growing town of Colorado Springs established by him only two years earlier. His vision of a new West opened up large areas to settlement that had been by-passed by other railroads. Not immune however to potential problems, Palmer devotes a large portion of this report to defending and explaining the advantages of narrow gauge railroad construction.General William Jackson Palmer (1836-1910) was a distinguished Union cavalry officer and railroad executive. After the war, he served as an official of the Union Pacific Railroad?s Eastern Division, which, became the Kansas City Pacific and later merged into the Union Pacific. In 1870, he became president of the Denver and Rio Grande and completed its line westward by 1883. During the 1880s, he organized and constructed Mexican railroads, and two lines from Mexico City to the border were completed by 1890.The maps alone make this report valuable and important and illustrate Palmer?s sweeping vision. The first map, showing the road from Denver to the Mexican border, illustrates the line as conceived in the U.S., and was also probably handed out as a separate promotional piece, not only for investors but also for potential settlers. The second map (still bound in the wrappers) shows the Company?s lands that are available for settlement and development. The third map (still bound in the wrappers) demonstrates the difficulty of the grades and terrain that must be overcome. The final map is a grand production showing the U.S. and Mexico with the projected route to join the two countries and the nexus of international and national trade routes that meet the terminus at Vera Cruz. This last map, which is rare and little-known, demonstrates graphically Palmer?s plan to tie Denver to the rest of the world.Map of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway and Connections34 ¼? x 23 ¾? framedMap of the Mexico National Railway, Including Its Proposed Extensions and Connections, Showing Also the Relative Position of Mexico to the United States the West Indies, and the Adjacent Oceans34 ¼? x 23 ¾? framed

Map Illustrating the Position of Duluth in the United States...Map of the State of Minnesota...Map of the City of Duluth

Philadelphia: M. R. Traubel's Lithographic Establishment, [ca. 1870]. Lithographed wall map, with original outline colour, expertly restored, backed with modern linen, trimmed in maroon cloth, on contemporary rollers, with bright colour, in very good condition. 59 x 62 inches. A quartet of impressive Minnesota maps, joined together in one large wall map, built around a central civic map of Duluth, all of which pre-date the Andreas' Minnesota maps of 1874, and that constitute an unapologetic display of Duluth's great commercial possibilities, each map revealing an element of the harbor city's lucrative potential. The majority of space is dedicated to downtown Duluth, showing the area along the waterfront and two long piers that form the heart of the shipping district. It is a harbor clearly prepared for heavy traffic. The largest inset shows the virtue of Duluth's geographic location for the transport of goods to the Midwest and East through the Great Lakes. This map specifies some of the untapped American and Canadian resources: gold, silver, copper, wheat, coal, salt and fertile soil, to name a few, that lay near railroad, canal and river connection to Duluth. The second largest inset offers a basic map of the state of Minnesota, noting existing and proposed railroads. Since statehood in 1858 and particularly since the Homestead Act of 1862 (notwithstanding the Civil War), Minnesota had grown rapidly. The third inset shows twenty-three miles of railroad along the Lake Superior & Mississippi & Northern Pacific, connecting Duluth with important stone quarries in Thomson. The connection between the publisher in Philadelphia and the "Western Land Association" that commissioned the map is interesting as Philadelphian Jay Cooke was the prime source of investment in Duluth until 1873. Clearly, the map is a promotional tool offering other prospective investors or settlers clear indications of how smoothly goods and people could travel from east to west, and west to east and south on the developed and soon to be developed shipping lines. A prime Minnesota item. Rare. Not in Rumsey nor on OCLC.

Autograph letter signed to Latimer Clark

1870. Very Good. Ronalds, Francis (1788-1873). A.L.s. to Latimer Clark. Battle, April 11, 1870. 2pp. 181 x 114 mm. Provenance: Latimer Clark.Ronalds invented the first working electric telegraph in 1816. His device involved two synchronized clocks whose dials were marked with the letters of the alphabet; instead of hands, each clock had a rotating disk with a notch cut into it so that only one letter on the clock face was visible at a time (Standage 1998, 19). Ronalds placed one clock at each end of eight miles of insulated wire that he had laid down in his garden, and used electrical impulses to transmit signals between them. He wrote to Lord Melville of the British Admiralty offering to demonstrate his telegraph, but was rejected: John Barrow, secretary to the admiralty, wrote back to Ronalds saying that "telegraphs of any kind are now [after the conclusion of the Napoleonic wars] totally unnecessary, and that no other than the one now in use [a semaphore telegraph] will be adopted" (quoted in DNB). Ronalds did not pursue his telegraphy venture any further, but left a record of it in his Descriptions of an Electric Telegraph and of Some Other Electrical Apparatus (1823; reprinted in 1871 at the suggestion of Latimer Clark). It was left to Charles Wheatstone and William Fothergill Cooke, both of whom knew of Ronalds's experiments, to develop the first telegraph adopted for public use in Britain in 1845. In 1871, in response to a petition submitted the previous year to Prime Minister William Gladstone, Ronalds received a knighthood for his contribution to telegraphy. His letter to Clark expresses his gratitude for this honor and for Clark's part in it:"Your kind congratulations are peculiarly esteemed; for I have every reason to believe that your expressions of approbation &c. of my humble labours in Electro-Telegraphy have been influential in Her Majesty's gracious act in my behalf."I believe it is almost needless to tell you that the honour conferred is much less valued by me than the testimony it helps to afford to the validity of my early labours in the matter. . . .         From Garfieldís library, a book authored and inscribed to him by Congressman Samuel S. Cox, who spearheaded legislation to create and expand the predecessor of the U.S. Coast Guard, the Life-Saving Service

The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Books were a scarce commodity to young James, who lost his father before the age of two, and was raised by his mother who struggled to maintain a humble existence. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned, and one of these books is described below: Book Signed and Inscribed, ìGen. Garfield - / With New Yearsí / Greeting - / from the author, / Saml S. Cox / 1 Jan 1870 / N.Yî on front free brown end paper, James A. Garfield Library bookplate on fixed end paper, 8vo, 442 pps., London: Sampson Low, Son, and Marston; New York: D. Appleton & Co, 1869. Lapis blue decorative boards stamped with black and gilt. Shelf wear and tears at spine caps. Cracked inner hinges and binding shaken, else good condition. Flaws easily restored. Samuel Sullivan Cox was in 1870, a Congressman from New York. He first served in Congress as a Democrat from Ohio, elected in 1856. He served three terms before being defeated largely due to his impassioned speech denouncing Republicans for supporting a pamphlet promoting miscegenation (inter-racial relations), a hoax later determined to have been conceived and printed by Democrats to influence racially biased voters to vote Democratic. The hoax was unsuccessful and Cox lost in the election. Cox left Ohio and moved to New York to practice law, and returned to Congress to represent New Yorkís 6th district in 1868. In Congress, Cox headed legislative efforts to create, organize, and expand the U.S. Life-Saving Service, a predecessor of the Coast Guard. It was established in 1871 to rescue victims of shipwrecks by maintaining patrol stations along American shores. Two years after his death, members of the Life-Saving Service presented Coxís widow with an elaborate silver vase which she presented to the Smithsonian the following year.

Garfield quotes from a new poem by James Russell Lowell on the title page of a presentation copy of Townsend’s “Lost Abroad” – then criticizes the dialogue of one of its characters

Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned, and one of these books is described below: Book with notations by Garfield in pencil. “Lost Abroad” by Geo. Alfred Townsend.” Hartford, Conn.” S.M. Betts and Company, 1870. 594 pages, 5” x 7”. Garfield’s 2.75” x 1.5” bookplate “Inter Folia Fructus / Library of / James A. Garfield” affixed inside front cover. Inscribed on verso of frontispiece, “General Garfield, / a good Congressman, /. From a reporter of things, / Geo. Alfred Townsend.” Offset on bookplate from chocolate front free-endpaper. Foxing on pages. Navy cloth boards with gilt design and lettering on spine. Text block loose but attached. Covers, joints, and hinges worn; back hinge tears. Good condition. Congressman Garfield has written in pencil on the title page, beneath a printed quote of Percy Bysshe Shelley (“A spirit in my feet has led me – who knows how? – To thy chamber window, sweet. – Shelley") the following: “With awkward senses furloughed & head bowed / I followed some fine instinct in my feet / Cathedral p 21 / See Lowells ‘Cathedral’.” These words appear on top of page 21 of James Russell Lowell’s “The Cathedral” (Boston: Fields, Osgood, & Co., 1870), followed by “Till, to unbend me from the loom of thought, / Looking up suddenly, I found mine eyes / Confronted with the minister’s vast repose.” In his novel “Lost Abroad,” Townsend tells of the travels of Mr. Applegate Shrink in 47 chapters. Chapter II is titled “The Contractor’s Family.” Garfield is critical of this paragraph written by Townsend on page 25: “‘My dear,’ said the little gentleman, ‘if you turn my mind from its natural drift, it will stagnate. You go to Europe for one thing, I for another. I buy you fine dresses. Show ’em. If you can get into society, stay there. But you must let me speculate on profit and risk, or I shall go mad.’ ‘Speculate as you like, Titus Oates,’ answered the lady, ‘only hold your tongue.’ ‘I can't, my dear,’ protested Mr. Oates; ‘if I see anything it’s essential to ask what it cost. If I don't know what it costs, how can I enjoy it? If anything has been constructed, a house, a fort, a government, a world, I must know the terms of agreement. You reason, my dear, from cause to effect; I supply a third item, – it is cause, contract and effect. You say that two persons are necessary to a bargain; I maintain that there are three.” Garfield brackets the lines quoted above and pencils in the blank right margin: “An ignorant contractor like Oates dosnt philosophize in this way-” Garfield has underlined a few words throughout the book which he undoubtedly read.

On the Mechanical Performance of Logical Inference

Taylor and Francis London: Taylor and Francis. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of Jevons's explanation of his "logical piano"; a landmark in computer science. Jevons invented a "logical piano" (so named because it resembled a small upright piano) that could perform, through a sequence of switches, various types of logical calculations. In doing so, he became "the first person to construct a machine with sufficient power to solve a complicated problem faster than the problem could be solved without the machine's aid" (Goldstine). "On the Mechanical Performance of Logical Inference," a paper Jevons read before the Royal Society on January 20, 1870, is his most detailed description of this early prototype of the modern computer. The logical piano now stands in the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford. In: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London for the year 1870, pp. 497-518, Vol. 160, Part II (the complete volume). Där står på försättsbladet med författarens energiska piktur: 'Maria Lloyd from her affectionate father, the author'. Svart på vitt!"

        Gallus Ferrugineus [Red Jundgle-Fowl]

New York: Published for the Author, Daniel Giraud Elliot, [1870]-1872. Hand-coloured lithograph, finished with gum arabic, after Joseph Wolf by J. Smit, printed by P.W.M. Trap. Very good condition. 23 3/4 x 18 13/16 inches. A beautiful image from the most splendid of Elliot's great monographs, "A Monograph of the Phasianidae or Family of the Pheasants." The magnificent size and beautiful colouring of the plates after Joseph Wolf's charcoal drawings reflect the importance which Elliot attached to the Phasianidae. Of all the families in the ornithological system, he regarded it as the one most vital to the human race, "containing within it the species that afford food for thousands of mankind, and also those which are the original source of all the domestic poultry met with throughout the civilized world." An excellent copy of this milestone in mathematical logic (van Heijenoort: From Frege to Gödel, 1922b). In this article, "the first work on models of set theory" (Gregory H. "In an important paper [ibid] Fraenkel clarified the notion of 'definiteness' in Zermelo's seperation axiom by restricting the function involved to a finite number of logical operations ... This was one of his modifications to Zermelo's system which has led his name to be attached to it, and the acronym 'ZF'." (Grattan-Guinness: The Search for Mathematical Roots 1870-1940, p.478)..         On Aphasia, or Loss of Speech, and The Localisation of the Faculty of Articulate Language.

London, 1870. 8vo. Original full cloth with some wear. Inner hinges a bit weak, a stain to the spine ,and minor loss to upper capital. Spine cocked. Bookplate from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland to inside of front board, the book-plate stating: "Presented to the Library by Mrs. WM. Boxwell in memory of her husband William Boxwell Professor of Pathology in the Schools of Surgery 1915-1943". XI (including the frontispiece), (1), 180 pp + the 40 pages long advertisement catalogue.. Scarce first edition, presentation-copy from the author, of this milestone in the history of aphasia, being one of the first books dedicated exclusively to aphasia, thus constituting one of the most important books ever written on the subject. It influenced not only the field of medicine, but also that of lingustics, psychology, and philosophy. "One of the first books dedicated exclusively to aphasia was published in 1879 by Frederic Bateman (1824-1904) [...] In Bateman's exemplarily systematic workaltogether 72 cases (already published and his own) are discussed in order to clarify the question of localisation of speech. [...] Bateman is the first to clearly propose that aphasia could be described in terms of syndromes and the probability that each individual with aphasia has a unique pattern of symptoms. A range of symptoms and features of aphasia are presented in detail and with examples by Bateman [...] The presentation is impressive from a modern perspective and only disorders of language comprehension and syntax are missing from his extensive surgery."         Frogs and Snakes

1870. Frogs and Snakes"GREENAWAY, Kate (1846 – 1901). "Frogs and Snakes". Original pen, ink and watercolor drawing illustrating "Diamonds and Toads" from Aunt Louisas London Toy Book, London: 1870. Image size: 9 x 8 inches; 229 x 203 mm. Matted, framed and glazed. This fantastically vivid and full watercolor drawing, from the artist very early on in her career, depicts a young woman holding in her right hand a large silver tankard and looking somewhat horrified as two huge frogs and two snakes jump and slither out of her mouth. An old woman who is facing her, is in fact a fairy who has cast a spell on the girl. She had put the girl to a test to see if she would be kind and obliging, but unfortunately the girl failed the test miserably and the outcome, as we can see, resulted in toads and vipers falling from her lips every time she speaks. Therein, surely lies a lesson to be learnt!"She had no sooner reached the fountain, than a lady most magnificently dressed came out of the woodland path, and asked Fanny to give her some water. This was the same Fairy who had before appeared as a poor old woman; and she came for the same purpose, that was, to try whether the young girl was kind and obliging; but lest she should only pretend goodness in order to gain the precious gift, the Fairy appeared in a different form."I did not come here to draw water for strangers," said Fanny, scornfully; "I suppose you think the best silver tankard was brought on purpose for your ladyship! However you may drink out of it if you have a fancy.""You are not very obliging," said the Fairy; "and since you have behaved with so little civility, I will bestow a gift on you which shall be your punishment. Every time you speak, there shall drop from you lips a viper or a toad." Having said these words she disappeared; and Fanny went home very sullen and angry." (Diamonds and Toads)."In 1869 Kate began an important illustration commission - six watercolour designs for Diamonds and Toads, a children's toybook published by Frederick Warne. She used her eighteen-year-old sister Fanny as a model, (let's hope she modeled the younger woman in this watercolor on Fanny and not the older one !!) and took over a year to complete her most ambitious project to date...She earned £36 from the colour printer, Kronheim, for her watercolour designs for Diamonds and Toads.Kate's sister, Fanny married a distant cousin who came from the notorious Dadd family (Richard Dadd had killed his father and lived out his life in a home for the criminally insane and another uncle and his sister had suffered similar illnesses). It seems highly likely that Kate found Richard Dadd's work attractive for his fairies and gnomes published in S.C. Hall's Book of British Ballads (1842) were in a style she had long admired. Moreover, two years after Fanny's marriage into the Dadd family, there was still interest in Richard's work, despite his lengthy confinement... It is interesting to consider Richard Dadd's influence on Kate's early work. For example, a comparison between Richard's 'Passion Series' watercolours of the mid-1850s and Kate's watercolour drawings for Diamonds and Toads, published fifteen years later, is quite revealing. There is a startling similarity of technique, as in the grotesque facial expressions and wide, frightening eyes emphasized by firm outlines. The work of both throughout this period is marked by the continual presence of witches and demonic gnomes. In addition, could Kate perhaps have had Richard in mind when she wrote the following maxims in a notebook found among her papers? 'Great wits to madness sure are near allied, of thin partitions do their bounds divide...Scandal will rub out like dirt when it is dry...There's a skeleton in every house'"."If ever there was a beautiful soul, it was the soul of Kate Greenaway".(Rodney Engen, Kate Greenaway; British Artists.         Thaumalea Amherstiae [Lady Amherst's Pheasant]

New York: Daniel Giraud Elliot, [1870]-1872. Hand-coloured lithograph, finished with gum arabic, after Joseph Wolf by J. Smit, printed by P.W.M. Trap. Very good condition. 18 13/16 x 23 3/4 inches. Of all the families in the ornithological system, he regarded it as the one most vital to the human race, "containing within it the species that afford food for thousands of mankind, and also those which are the original source of all the domestic poultry met with throughout the civilized world." Cf. Anker 130; Fine Birds Books (1990), p. 95; Nissen IVB 295; Wood p. 331; Zimmer p. 206.
