1870 1870 - A collection of fourteen volumes of the religious journal Teny Soa which was published by the London Missionary Society from 1866. Text in romanised Malagasy throughout. Bound in original blind stamped cloth (eight vols) and others in contemporary calf, half calf or cloth, more or less worn. The major part of the Malagasy literary heritage was oral and because of the colonialism the emergence of Malagasy literature had been inhibited. In 1818 the London Missionary Society began their work on the island and the first printing office was started in 1827. Literary Malagasy evolved in the second half of the 19th century. The first journal to appear was Teny Soa which published works by prose writers and poets. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Arm for the Right; or, the Invalid's Last Appeal

The author, [Haverhill, Mass. 1870 - First edition. Broadside. Approximately 12" x 9". Modest but pervasive chipping and tears confined to the margins, good or better. Twenty-one stanzas of verse and two paragraphs of explanation from a lady of Haverhill, Massachusetts, who here stands up in verse for her right to salubrious peace and quiet in the face of the repeated cacophonous depredations of the Haverhill Rifle Club---or as she has it in her note, "It is now nearly nine months since I have been obliged, let me be ever so sick and helpless, to leave my room or bed at a moment's warning, and flee before the Rifle Club, in order to save my life and reason. And this has been done repeatedly when I have not been able to sit up more than five or ten minutes during the day after leaving the carriage. I should have entered a complaint at the commencement, but the Police Judge, the protector of the public peace and the town representative of Justice, was at the head of this outrage, and could not sustain the cause of right and humanity without involving himself in the overthrow." That Smith's outrage should find vent in verse is of course curious but not perhaps atypical of her time---certainly the ringing sentiments suit themselves to lyric: "Beneath the dark banner Of vice they're arrayed, And on Guilt and Injustice Their footsteps are stayed. Shouting in triumph, As onward they go, To inflict on the helpless New suffering and woe." Smith appears to have published a similarly gloomy collection of verse, Haverhill in Eclipse (Newburyport, 1870) and another scarce broadside aimed against local corruption, A New Year's Address to the True Hearted Citizens and Voters of Haverhill. OCLC notes two locations for this rare appeal. [Attributes: First Edition]

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1870 - 1870 Wisden Original Wrappers

1870. On offer here is a very rare 1870 Wisden still in it's original wrappers and in very good overall condition. As can be seen from the photographs, the front and rear wrappers are a little marked - mainly foxing. A facsimile spine has been added to the book in recent times. That repair was not carried out by me, but I suspect that at one time the book was rebound in hard boards and at some stage the book has been taken out of the boards and a facsimile spine attached. Internally, the title page and the first few pages have some foxing as do the last couple of pages but otherwise the contents are in excellent, clean, unmarked condition - most unusual for a book of this vintage. Overall, a really nice example.

Vingt mille lieues sous les mers 20000 Leagues Under the seas

Vingt mille lieues sous Les mers. French (making it the True) First Edition. This is the illustrated 322,433 pg . version that was released in 1870 following the publication in Spain the year previous and this leather spined with brown cloth hard cover is identical to that of the Spanish binding however provinance provided with this book shows a receipt for binding work and this complete and slightly spotted or soiled novel is the only French version I have seen up for sale . Originally , there were three editions: one economical, without illustrations; another one in small format, with a few illustrations; and a third one in a bigger in-octavo format and richly illustrated. It is the last edition that is now very popular among book collectors. Especially popular are first editions of his best known novels as this one is not only his most famous but this particular version contains almost 25% more text from Jules Verne masterpiece! For more than a hundred years the mistranslated English versions were the only versions until 1998's Butcher edition annotated from the French original.

Ambrose Bierce's personal copy of The Catholic's Vade mecum : a select manual of prayers for daily use

Philadelphia: Eugene Cummiskey, 1870 s circa. Hardcover. Good. Signed. Personal copy of Ambrose Bierce, with his signature on the front end page. Also contains a carte-de-visite of Mollie Bierce laid in. Original boards, rebacked with later cloth spine. Housed in custom made brown cloth slip case with red and gold spine label. 416, 68 pages, [1] leaf of plates: illustrations; 13 cm. Bierce has marked the beginning and end of p. 263, the Psalter of Jesus, "Jesus help me overcome all temptations to sin, and the malice my ghostly enemy..." <br> Ambrose Bierce was an important American writer and journalist. One of his most notable works is the satirical Devil's Dictionary. Bierce served in Union Army's 9th Indiana infantry during the Civil War, seeing action at Philippi, Rich Mountain, Shiloh, and Kennesaw Mountain. In 1871 Bierce married Molly Day (shown in the included photo). They separated after Bierce discovered love letters written to her by an admirer, resulting in their divorce in 1904, and earning Bierce the epithet, "Bitter Bierce." Interestingly, although brought up in a fervent Revivalist church and to a devout family, Bierce was a consistent agnostic (atheist?) throughout his life.

Albumen photograph of wheat harvest with steam-powered thresher and thirteen laborers

      W. Caswell, Photographer, Grand Forks, Dakota 1870 - Photographer's stamp on verso: "W. Caswell, / Photographer, / Grand Forks, Dak.". 1 vols. Boudoir-style, image: 4-1/2 x 7-5/8 in. mounted on card. Little is known of William Caswell, save in 1877 he formed a partnership with Simon Duffin in Winnipeg, having previously operated out of Duluth, Minnesota and Grand Forks. This photograph, with Caswell's Grand Forks stamp dates from the 1870's, the era of Dakota Territory "bonanza" farms, heavily reliant on steam power: "On the bonanza farms opened up in the Red River Valley of the North in the seventies, portable steam engines for threshing were used from the beginning. To have relied upon horse power for threshing would have crippled the large-scale farming operations" (Wik, "Steam Power on the American Farm, 1830-1880") An early image from the first days of steam-powered grain harvesting in the Dakota Territory - the steam engine (on the left) is powering the thresher (in rear, behind stacked grain). Photographer's stamp on verso: "W. Caswell, / Photographer, / Grand Forks, Dak.". 1 vols. Boudoir-style, image: 4-1/2 x 7-5/8 in. mounted on card

He then went on a strenuous journey north to St. Olga Bay not by steamer as it was common, but along the shore of the Sea of Japan, following less penetrable forest paths, and visiting Vladivostok (then a village with no more than 500 people) and Nakhodka among others. From St. Olga Bay Przhevalsky went by land to the mouth of the Tadusha (Zerkalnaya) River, crossed the Sikhote-Alin mountain range, and returned to the Ussuri River following her tributaries Fudjin (Pavlovka) and Ulukhe. In 1868 he conducted more surveys of Lake Khanka and assisted in suppression of Chinese gangs robbing Russian villages on the Suchan River. Przhevalsky compiled the first comprehensive description of the Ussuri region, clarified the shape and geographical position of Lake Khanka, performed topographical survey of the area between Nakhodka and Tadusha River, and mapped the eastern slopes of the Sikhote-Alin mountain range. He discovered a new mammal species (black hare) and castor aralia tree (Kalopanax septemlobus). The book contains a detailed descriptions of the Ussuri region's geography, climate, fauna and flora, life and occupations of native inhabitants and Russian settlers, agriculture, industries and trade. The map shows the Ussuri region up to the Chinese and Korean borders, outlining Przhevalsky's route and marking main cities, Russian, Cossack and Chinese villages, military posts, and telegraph stations.

        Moveable] Fröhliche Stunden

      - Quarto. Circa 1870's. A monumental German-printed movable in original cloth backed blue gilt paper covered boards with large full-size inserted color cover illustration. Fifteen superb color printed scenes with ornate and rather complicated moveable pieces controlled by one pull tab, with several hinge points on each movable entity (up to 3-5 per example) including sledder that travels down hill as the pull tab is dragged down, rocking baby, girls washing doll in well, egg hatching, sawing wood, and much more. Most in workable condition and all parts appear to be present. An unrecorded movable. We can find no record of this book. The title page reads: "Frohliche Stunden. Ein unterhatendes Bilderbuch mit ziehbaren Bildern fur die Liebe Jugend." Overall quite nicely preserved, given the nature of movables, printed on fragile paper. The binding is fully intact and internally quite clean and bright. Some minor restoration needed to bring all movables in working order. Most scarce thus.

JAPANESE HAND-COLORED EARLY ALBUMEN PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM.

      - [Japan 1870's-1880's, Kashima/Ogawa]. Wood covers, very good 25 hand-colored albumen, each image: ca. 26 x 21, laid down on stiff accordion album leaves, edges gilt, some hinges weak or mended, all images strong, clear, not faded. RARE ! *** *** *** . . . ORIGINAL HAND-COLORD PERIOD PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM . . . *** This is a lovely collection of finely hand-colored albumen images. The images are from western, and southern Japan, from Nikko down to Osaka, and Nagasaki. Albums of these places are not common in the Japanese photographica genre. Thou many are not signed nor identified by their negative numbers, this is clearly the work of some of Japan's excellent and celebrated photographers. . It is entirely possible, this is one of a group of photograph albums covering Japan, this being a second volume, the first probably covered Yokohama and the Tokyo area. . The album begins where the first volume most likely left off. Regardless this is an excellent example of early Japanese photography. . *** The photographers are questionable, however saying this, we have identified some in Bennett [see below] by their negative numbers. Namely #746 attributed to Kashima or Ogawa Kazumasa. Number 454a attributed to Kusakabe; #54 attributed to Ogawa Kazumasa ad Ogawa Sashichi. . * THE NEGAVTIVE NUMBERS: A good portion of these images have negative numbers, most of which are not listed in Bennett. It is a well known fact, that a good number of Japanese negatives were sold, loaned borrowed and exchanged between both foreign and Japanese photographers and photograph studios from the 1860's onwards. Therefore the exact photographer who took the photograph is commonly in question. Though there has been a lot of research and efforts to identify negative numbers, each photographer and photographic studio enhanced, changed or altered the original negative at will to create a system that would match his own needs. This left complete chaos in the field for those of use who would like to truly identify the actual person responsible for taking the photograph. . * This album contains a good number of unidentified photographs, but skillfully taken and composed with a keen eye, we identify: . FROM THE FRONT: 1. Unknown view of a large river with a bridge and lumberyard in the foreground. There is no negative number, it was likely taken near Yokohama or Tokyo along a large river with low hills in the background. Several small boats ply the river. The bridge seems to be built of steel, indicating a Meiji period work. . * 2. [Osaka] Castle and large moat, unidentified, with low mountains in the background. Nicely done with a keen eye. This is confirmed to be Osaka castle, a very similar view is found and is illustrated Zannier [see below] on p.61 as "Moats Osaka" by Felice Beato. . * 3. Typical street scene, a single electric pole in the immediate foreground, with 2-3 other poles in the deep foreground, a few wires go to businesses. A large number of people, rickshaw pullers are in the street, a large majority of people face the photographer who must have been on a very tall ladder, causing a commotion, nevertheless the image is very clear and no loss of focus during exposure. This must be dated around the late 1870's-1880's with the advent of electricity. A small fleck of the photo surface lacking, else clean, a touch of over done red as common in the early Meiji period. . * 4. Numbered in the negative: A382 Tennoji Pagoda, Osaka. This shows a nice two-sided perspective of the pagoda and the background temple building. . * 5. Numbered A 420 Kasuga at Nara. Shows a lovely pathway with four deer, many stone lantern on both sides of the road, thick forest trees. This exact image is found in March, see below, on p.112. . * 6.Numbered A 415 Nigetsudo at Nara. Shows the stone steps up to the shrine, with is stunning architecture. A few people freeze during the photographing. Beautifully composed. . * 7.Numbered 75 Nara Park. This shows a pavilion with three people looki

Sulla struttura degli epiteli pavimentosi stratificati.

Rendiconti del Reale Istituto Lombaro, serie II, Voll. III. Fasc. XVI. - Milano 1870, 8, 8 pp., 2 Taf., feiner Pappband. Very rare offprint!"Nodes of Bizzozero in the skin. Another field of interest for Bizzozero concerned the histological structure of the epidermis and, in particular, the points of contact between adjacent cells of the stratum spinosum, erroneously considered at the time to be 'intercellular bridges' that established a cytoplasmic continuity. Bizzozero's attention was captured by some peculiar shapes that he observed in these cells, such that the processes projecting from the adjacent cellular elements met end-to-end in small, dense and dark nodules, later known as 'nodes of Bizzozero'. Bizzozero perceptively concluded that there was no cytoplasmic continuity between these cells, and that the dense nodules that we now call desmosomes or 'connecting bodies' (from the Greek words desmos for 'bond' or 'ligament' and soma for 'body'), were, in fact, bipartite adhesive structures to which both cells contributed. Bizzozero's conclusion was not accepted at the time, owing to the influence of Louis Ranvier, who propounded the opposite idea of cell-to-cell continuity. The definitive resolution of this controversy came with the advent of the electron microscope, which revealed a protoplasmic discontinuity at the level of the intercellular bridges, so confirming Bizzozero's theory."         Twilight Hours in the Adirondacks. The Daily Doings and Several Sayings of Seven Sober, Social, Scientific Students in the Great Wilderness of Northern New York, Variously Versified in Seven Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Seven Lines

Syracuse: Wynkoops & Leonard, 1870. 8vo. Original albumen photograph portrait of the author mounted on verso of title-page. Steel-engraved frontispiece and additional title. Original green cloth, gilt-decorated on front cover, gilt-lettered on spine. Lightly rubbed; preliminaries lightly chipped at edges. Provenance: Walter T. Avery (signature on title), baseball player for the New York Knickerbockers. With a fine New York provenance, owned by the pioneering baseball player Walter T. Avery, a member of the original Knickerbocker team in 1846. Avery played for the Knickerbockers in the very first baseball game between two different teams on June 19, 1846 at the Elysian Fields in Hoboken. An early photographically-illustrated work - Seneca Ray Stoddard had only started his photographic practice six years earlier. Laid-in is the scarce ephemeral advertisement Circular for the book, 8 pages, opening "In presenting this little volume to the public, I do not deem an apology necessary except to say that the edition was small, calculated only for my relatives and personal friends." It includes printed testimonials by James Johonnot (NY State educator), Franklin B. Hough (scientist, historian and the first chief of the United States Division of Forestry), F. A. Loomis, and others. Homer de Lois Sweet was a poet, as evidenced by the verse in this volume, as well as a surveyor, cartographer and journalist from Pompey, NY in Onondaga County. He was the co-creator with Edwin Merritt of the 36-panel wall map 'The Great Wilderness of Northern New York.' Scarce: OCLC records only two copies (in European libraries); though it more common in the marketplace than this would suggest, it is a notably rare work especially combining the ephemerality of its included Circular with great historical provenance, in this early photographically-illustrated volume.

A few people freeze during the photographing. Beautifully composed. . * 7.Numbered 75 Nara Park. This shows a pavilion with three people looking over the lake and red Momiji tree and pine tree. . * 8. Numbered G4 Nagasaki Harbour. This is a stunning view from the hill overlooking the city and harbor. There is a very tall red-brick chimney at the far right, with a smaller one just below that as well, likely a brick or other factory. A large number of vessels including a few which look like foreign ships anchored in the bay. . * 9. Numbered 746 View of Miyajima. This is listed in Bennett by this number, he states the photographers as either Ogawa Kazumasa, or Ogawa Sashichi, with question marks. This image shows the great Torii gate in the water, and the large stone beacon lantern with a young boy petting a deer. This is a famous shrine island just below Hiroshima. . * 10. Numbered B74 Matsushima, Inland Sea [Three view in Japan] Part 1. This sows a large pie tree overlooking the Inland sea, two small islands and three small boats in the lower right, a picturesque scene. . * 11. Numbered A 455 Red Lacquer [Sacred Bridge] Nikko. This is of course a well-known and "classic" image showing the red lacquered bridge. There are a few electric poles in the background making this around 1875-1880's. A similar image is found in March, p.91, see below. . * 12. Numbered 16 Yomeimon Gate, at Nikko. The elaborately colored entrance gate to the grave temples of Japan's Shoguns. . * 13. Numbered 53 Inside Iyemitsu Temple, Nikko. Found in Bennett as number 54. Shows the elaborately designed interior view of the temple and its shrine. . * 14. Numbered I 83 Ganman, Nikko. Probably the work of Ogawa Kazumasa. Shows the rushing river, with a large number of stone Buddha's on the left bank, a single person sits on a huge rock observing the photographer. A similar image is illustrated in March, see below, as found on p.113. . * FROM THE BACK: 15. Numbered P67 Chinese Music. This shows seven musicians each wearing usual hats and playing musical instruments. They stand before a two-story house and bamboo fence. This looks to be in the 1870's. . * 16 Numbered K71 Ino's Meeting [sic for Ainu Meeting].This shows a posed group of seven Ainu. Two are women, five are heavily bearded men. They wear the typical large-patterned thick and heavy Ainu robe. Three are seated in the foreground two hold a bowl the woman a kettle. The four standing at the rear from the left are a man holding a bow and arrow, a woman with tattooed moustache, a man holding a long spear and sword, with animal fur pouch, the last carries a long sword. Although posed, each faces the camera some are barefooted, the freeze for the photographer. A lovely scene of early Ainu, perhaps 1870's. . * 17. Numbered Q84 Cooling Vessel. Shows a large pleasure boat with two rooms for passengers. The crew of three man pole their way along the river, a third man uses the rudder/oar. There are nine passengers enjoying the ride, three sit on the roof, cherry blossoms are on the opposite shore. Pleasure cruise to cool off during the warm spring weather. . * 18. Numbered 1049 in the negative. Hinagata Matsuri or doll festival. Shows the typical stair format display of small dolls, flower arrangements, along with a lovely painted scroll to the left. A young girl sits relaxed before the doll display, with a maid offering Sake on a small tray. Perhaps the girls mother is seen at the left holding a small tray of Sake cups. This kind of doll display was common for "Girls' Day" in May. . * 19. Numbered L74 Funeral Bites On Iralanquin [sic for Funeral Rites on a Palanquin]. Shows a procession of some nineteen people in a parade. Shows two lantern bearers, a Buddhist priest followed by mourners, and carrying a red-roofed palanquin with the deceased, followed by several other mourners, and a woman and child being pulled by a rickshaw. There is a black lacquer box being carried by another person. A two-story house appears in the background. . * 20. No caption. Shows the ceremony of Seppuku [Ritual suicide] after the Samurai has stabbed himself in the guts. Shows the man who saves face by suicide in white [for purity] Kimono, with blood pouring out. The "second" or fried holds his long Katana [sword] at they ready when the pain is unbearable, he will "dispatch" his friend with a single decapitating stroke. Two Shogun officials sit on small chairs and witness the event to confirm the saving of face and courage of the suicide. At the far left, is most likely a close friend or colleague of the person committing suicide, he bows deeply, showing respect. A grim image of Bushido, Japan's Zen code of ethics in practice. Samurai who were guilty of any digression of the code of Bushido were allowed to commit suicide in an effort to reclaim their honor by courageously following the Bushido code by paying for their loss of face by suicide, thus restoring their honor in death. . * 21. Numbered B1179 Carpenter. This shows three carpenters working on posts for house construction. Nicely done. . * 22. Numbered K15 Manufacturing Silk. This shows a girl processing cocoons after boiling to unroll the silk threads and transfer them on the a winding mechanism. The pulley and gear "machine" is made entirely of wooden cogged wheels. Small spindles of silk thread are seen in the foreground. Excellent example of early "technology" in Japan. . * 23. 0 53 Gathering Tea Leaves at Uji, Yamashiro. Shows a large field to Camellia tea bushes, with eight women and their baskets picking young and tender tea leaves. . * 24. Q21 A wooden Mortar for Pounding Rice. Shows a man mounted on a simple machine of long levers to pound and crush rice into Mochi. A typical rural scene with another man in the background wearing a cloth over his head to keep the cold off, and a girl carrying a large basked of rice, she also wears a cloth over her head to ward the cold off. It is nicely decorated with Shibori [tai-dyed indigo-blue]. The scene is in front of two farm houses with thick rice straw roofs. . * 25. Numbered 1532 Entrance of House. This shows two large images of Japanese women nicely dressed in Kimono standing before a doorway with a large and colorful lantern. They are holding hands indicating that probably the older woman at the left is the mother of the girl to the right. The kind and nature of the two different Kimono's indicate this. The whole scene is studio staged, and posed for the photographer. . * 26. Numbered B1154 Dancing Girl Making Paper Birds [sic for Dancing Girl...]. This shows a lovely young girl who holds a large Origami Tsar [crane]. This exact image is found in March on p. 55, see below. . These last two portraits seem to be the work again of Ogawa Kazumasa, who was known for his excellent portraits. . *** HAND-COLORING By and large each image has been delicately hand-colored with a light hand and tender natural-looking colors. With the importation from Germany in the very late Tokugawa-early Meiji period of the aniline red pigment, there was a tendency to overly use this very strong and impressive red too much in Japanese woodblock prints, as well as in some photographs for effect. This is displayed in two or three of these photos, which was common of the period. Otherwise the majority of these photos are tastefully hand-colored in the most tasteful use of color reflecting more of the natural state of nature and those kinds of tender, pastels. . *** CONDITION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS: Each image is exceptionally clean, bright, solid and without any fading or issues. The album has been brilliantly kept from the light and therefore each image is a stunning and fine example of some of the best photography of the period and hand-coloring. Remarkably, the lack of fading is excellent. The final major point is that each image is clear and focus is stunning. About as good as the day they were hand-made. . *** ALBUM BINDING & CONDITION: The album was formerly bound with cloth covering the wooden boards. This is now gone, small remnants of the old cloth remain inside the covers. The hinges on several have been mended or restored, but due to the slight and typical curve of each thick page, this put pressure on the hinges. Each page is clean and made of thick board. Top and bottom edges are gilt. There is some of the usual old warping to the covers and pages, which is common for this type of wooden album covers. . The album page size is 25.5 x 34 cm., the wooden covers are just slightly larger. . *** A NOTE ABOUT THE PHOTO IMAGES POSTED TO OUR WEBSITE: Due to the fact that we can not place this item flat on our scanner as we don't want to damage the album hinges, we have resorted to our digital camera, which will not photograph as well as the scanner, the colors being far from the original, showing a yellowish-pink tinge due to the nature of man made overhead lights. This is not true color when compared to the originals. . *** REFERENCES: .
