SUN PICTURES OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN SCENERY, WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL FEATURES, AND SOME ACCOUNT OF THE RESOURCES OF THE GREAT WEST; CONTAINING THIRTY PHOTOGRAPHIC VIEWS ALONG THE LINE OF THE PACIFIC RAIL ROAD, FROM OMAHA TO SACRAMENTO

New York: Julius Bien, 1870. Large quarto. Half title. Contemporary three-quarter green morocco and cloth, spine gilt, a.e.g.; rebacked, preserving the original spine. Corners heavily worn. Bookplate of noted collector Kenneth E. Hill on front pastedown. Images bright and clean, internally fresh. Very good. This impressive book, one of the standard pieces of photographically illustrated Western Americana, was prepared by the famous geologist, Ferdinand V. Hayden. The photographs, taken by A.J. Russell, appeared in a larger format the previous year in Russell's extremely rare album, THE GREAT WEST ILLUSTRATED. The views, depicting scenes along the line of the Union Pacific, are intended to illustrate the geology which can be observed from the train. Despite the title, all the photographs are of locales within the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada (twelve in Wyoming, sixteen in Utah, and two in California). Hayden wrote: "The pictures have been arranged so as to commence with the first range of mountains west of Cheyenne, and to continue thence to the Salt Lake Valley with the view that the book may be used as a guide by those who will avail themselves of the grand opportunities for geological study...." "In using Russell's photographs as illustrations in SUN PICTURES OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN SCENERY, geologist Hayden took the long view of history, emphasizing the value of pictures as documents of geological change while professing indifference to the more recent past. For Hayden, the geologic features of the West were like an open book, affording the educated reader the opportunity to understand millions of years of geologic history" - Sandweiss. HOWES H337. SABIN 31007. TRUTHFUL LENS 81. FLAKE 3920. MARGOLIS, TO DELIGHT THE EYE 7. SANDWEISS 177.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood. with: John Jasper's Secret.

London; Chapman and Hall. and: The London Publishing Offices. 1870/1872, 1870. First Edition, first issue of Edwin Drood, first edition of John Jasper's Secret. 2 vols. 8vo. Exquisitely bound by Zaehnsdorf in full brown calf, extra gilt decoration to spine and boards with onlay corner pieces and blind centre tools. Lightly rubbed, otherwise lovely examples of very high quality binding. Top edges gilt. Internally clean and beight with some very minor toning and spotting to page blocks. A beautiful set of the original mystery in first issue accompanied by an early example (perhaps the first) of one of its sequel attempts. There have been several attempted conclusions of Dickens' unfinished mystery, sensible and well written in the case of Leon Garfield's attempt, and occasionally wildly eccentric as in the case of the conclusion purportedly dictated to a medium by Dickens from beyond the grave. A handsome set.

EPIC PHOTOGRAPHIC PANORAMA OF VENICE, ITALY].

[Venice. ca. 1870s]. - Large panoramic photograph, 11 1/4 x 150 inches. Mounted on card, linen- backed in nine sections, folding into leather slipcase stamped "VENISE" in gilt. Light surface dusting. Slipcase worn and partially split. Panorama near fine. An amazing panorama of the "Queen of the Adriatic." Measuring over twelve feet, this striking panorama shows the southern side of Venice as taken from the bell tower of the Chiesa del San Giorgio Maggiore, a 16th-century Benedictine church located just east of the barrier island of Giudecca, directly opposite San Marco and the Doge's Palace. The photograph shows the entire expanse of the city, from the western end to the public gardens on the eastern extreme of the island, and depicts a bustling port city, with numerous ships running in the Venetian Lagoon. A stunning and important photographic record of one of the planet's most romantic cities.

        24 photographies originales

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Photo Album]: Family Album of Thomas J. Kinney, New Jersey Newspaperman and Politician

[Circa 1870]. Folio. Contemporary three quarter leather album of the period. The leather is powdery and dusty thus very good, the images are near fine. 34 large (most are approximately 8" x 9") mounted albumen prints. Kinney was a successful New Jersey newspaperman and politician. He owned and ran the Newark Daily Advertiser for most of his life. He was a graduate of Princeton, a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, founding member and president of the American branch of the S.P.C.A., and a delegate at the Republican Convention that nominated Lincoln for President in 1860. He studied law in the office of Joseph Bradley, the founder of Asbury Park and Ocean Grove, apparently but never practiced. This album shows his family; wife (Estelle Condit), children, beach scenes, as well as three images of African-Americans (presumably domestic help). Several of the images are likely to have been taken in Asbury Park or neighboring Deal. An interesting album of earlier than usual vintage. .

[?], 2. IV. 1870. 3 S., 8°. [An den österr. Chemiker u. - Versand D: 12,00 EUR De la Rive, Schrötter, Physik, Brief, Letter, Lettre, Briefe, Autograph, Autographe, Autographen, Autograf, Autografe, Autografen, Signatur, Signiert, Signed, Signature, Unterschrift, Eigenhändig, Handschrift, Handschriften, Manuscript, Manuscrit, ALS, A.L.S., LAS, L.A.S.

OLD BELT, KNIFE, KNIFE SCABBARD, PISTOL HOLSTER WITH TWENTY-TWO .44 CALIBER BULLETS STILL IN THE GUN BELT

[n.p., n.d.]., 1870. According to a facsimile typed letter dated August 21, 1920, that was signed by Historian and Author E. A. Brininstool, "this old belt, knife, knife scabbard and pistol holster were carried by a notorious horsethief who was shot and killed in South Dakota by Capt. George Bartlett, U.S. Deputy Marshal, in the early '80's. They were presented to me by Capt. Bartlett, and in turn are herewith presented to my good old pard, L. H. Spragle, to hang in his den as a memento of wild days on the frontier of Dakota. It will be observed that one shell is nicked on the head. Bartlett's bullet struck the shell, glanced off and went through the thief's body. The shells in this belt have never been taken out since the man was shot. E. A. Brininstool." In a second facsimile typed letter from Brininstool dated March, 21, 1921, the first paragraph says "Yep, you're right. You got that belt, holster and knife and scabbard. I did have the saddle, but had no place for it and sold it some years ago. I helped bury Bartlett here when he died some ten years ago or so, and my Indian stuff is the dope he had. Better hang on to this story and you have the goods to show along with it." L. H. Spragle and E. A. Brininstool first met in Reno in 1910 or so when they each were in the process of divorcing their wives. While the process was running its course they roomed together in a tent city and apparently had quite a time together. Spragle returned to Pennsylvania and he and Brininstool carried on a life-long friendship and correspondence. We find in an article by Jeff Gill some comments about Capt. George Bartlett but no references to the "notorious horsethief." Gill says "... a fascinating character named George E. Bartlett, a U.S. Marshall for Pine Ridge and a city west of there already infamous as Deadwood, South Dakota. Bartlett had worked as a sales representative for the gunpowder company owned by relatives of Warren Moorehead (his King family relations from Xenia, this apparently being the reason he and Bartlett knew each other in the first place), and also ran a small trading post of his own on a creek through part of the Pine Ridge Reservation.

JAPANESE LACQUER PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM, 50 HAND-COLORED EARLY ALBUMEN PHOTOS WITH TWO

[Japan n.d. ca.1870's-1880's]. Lacquered covers, gilt decor-. ations, accordion folded, 19 x 14 cm.,50 hand-colored photos. oblong format, photo size ca. 13.5 x 9.5 cm., very solid and. good example in nice condition with excellent photos. RARE !. A SUPERB ALBUM, WITH SHARP, HAND-COLORED IMAGES OF JAPAN THE PHOTOGRAPHERS: Tamamura Kozaburo & Kusakabe Kimbei . This album contains a many excellent Yokohama views, and also a good number of images of Japanese women. . Tamamura Kozaburo [1856-1923?], was a Japanese photographer, who opened his photographic shop in 1874, in Yokohama. He made photographs and sold hand-colored photographic photo albums as souvenirs to foreigners. . Tamamura got his start in photography when in 1883 he began to work for Adolfo Farsari [1841-1898]. He was an Italian photographer based in Yokohama. His studio, the last notable foreign-owned studio in Japan, was one of the country's largest and most prolific commercial photographic firms. Largely due to Farsari's exacting technical standards and his entrepreneurial abilities it had a significant influence on the development of photography in Japan. . In 1885, Tamamura formed a partnership with Farsari to acquire the Stillfried & Andersen studio also known as the also known as the Japan Photographic Association, was a photographic studio founded by Baron Raimund von Stillfried and Hermann Andersen that operated in Yokohama, Japan between 1876 and 1885. The studio is noted for its fine portraits and landscapes that were often hand-coloured and presented in beautifully bound albums. The firm also produced photographic prints from negatives by Felice Beato. . After at least two visits to Japan in the early to mid-1860s, Austrian photographer and nobleman Baron Raimund von Stillfried became a resident of Yokohama in 1868 where he learned photography from Felice Beato. In August 1871, he established his own photographic studio, called Stillfried & Co. In 1875, Hermann Andersen was listed as an employee of Stillfried & Co. but by 1876, Andersen had formed a partnership with Stillfried and so the firm was renamed Stillfried & Andersen. Another incarnation of the firm was the Japan Photographic Association, under which name it was listed in 1875.Until 1885 the firm operated under both names interchangeably. . In 1877, Stillfried & Andersen purchased the studio and stock of Felice Beato and in the same year or shortly thereafter published Views and Costumes of Japan, which included photographs by Beato and Stillfried, as well as reprints of some of Beato's works. . The partnership between Stillfried and Andersen was legally dissolved in 1878, though Andersen continued to run the studio under the same name of Stillfried & Andersen. In the subsequent years a number of legal battles and other entanglements ensued between the two, also involving Stillfried's brother, Franz von Stillfried. Around 1885, Kusakabe Kimbei obtained a quantity of Stillfried's original negatives, which Kusakabe included in some of his albums in the late 1880s and the 1890s. The firm of Stillfried & Andersen was finally bought by Adolfo Farsari in 1885, by which point neither Stillfried nor Andersen was resident in Japan. Farsari held the bulk of the firm's negatives, only for them to be destroyed in a fire in 1886 along with all of Adolfo Farsari's own stock. *** CO-PHOTOGRAPHER: This album was also contributed to by the co-photographer was Kusakabe Kimbei [1841-1934] who operated a studio on Benten-dori, Yokohama in 1881. In 1885, he managed to acquire a number of Beato and Stillfried negatives which were reprinted in his albums. Tamamura worked from his Yokohama studio. He was later commissioned to provide all the photos appearing the famous Capt. F. Brinkley book on Japan, see below. *** THE IMAGES: [Recto or front side]: . This charming album contains 50 photographic scenic views of Japan: . THE IMAGES: [Recto or front side]: . 1. Nagoya castle . 2. Ueno park Tokio . 3. Nezame at Nakasendo . 4. Hommoku Yokohama . 5. These show 6 Japanese women's portraits, 18 other photos of Japanese women at their chores, or flower arranging, playing music, having lunch, playing Karuta [a card game], painting a Kimono, story telling, playing parlor and New Years games, riding a rickshaw, being carried in a palanquin, enjoying cherry blossom viewing, walking in the winter evening with a lantern & large umbrella, farm girls flailing rice, picking tea, &c. . All of these women are elaborately dressed in beautiful and stunningly decorated silk Kimono, with period coiffeur. Each is nicely hand-colored in pastel, very light and reserved on the use of bright reds, very sharp images, not faded, nicely executed. *** Some images are numbered and labeled in the negative in English, which match those found in T. Bennett: EARLY IMAGES OF JAPAN. Images with numbers 174, 264 & 748, match his index. . ATTRIBUTIONS: Some of these photos have numbers which correspond exactly as those listed in Bennett [see below], attributing them with details. *** This is an excellent primary graphic resource showing Yokohama & the Kanagawa areas as well as a general visual guide to Japan's sights. *** CONDITION OF THE ALBUM COVERS: The covers are lacqure covers, with lovely pictorial design, also shows a Japanese boatman and woman passenger. The faces are in ivory or bone. The face of the man is missing, the face of the woman is complete. Please view the images posted to our website. * CONDITION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS; The images are clean, excellent sharpness and focus, nicely and tastefully hand-colored with delicate pastels. A very nice example. *** REFERENCES: The following are some useful bibliographies to consult for more information on this album and Japanese early photography in general: . BENNETT, Terry.
