        Hand and Soul

Stangeways and Walden [1869], London - First edition. A most interesting and unique offering - a scarce privately printed book accompanied by important handwritten letters from Rossetti's brother, William Michael. This is a privately-printed edition of a story that had first appeared in The Germ in 1850. Dante Gabriel Rossetti originally intended to include this prose story in his volume of verse, but decided not to following the recovery of his poetical manuscript notebook from the grave of his wife, Elizabeth Siddal. This pamphlet is an offprint from the typesetting found in proofs produced between October 30 and November 25 1869. William Rossetti notes when his brother excluded the story from his published verse he had various copies of Hand and Soul done up in drab wrappers, and that he gave some away but never sold them. Both Thomas Wise and Charles Fairfax Murray state, without citing any authority, that 100 copies were printed. About 30 can now be accounted for. All but a handful are in institutional collections, most deriving from a cache discover by William after Dante Gabriel's death in 1882. This copy was sent by William Michael Rossetti to an admirer of his family, Louisa Douglas Summerbell. She was an artist and illuminator much influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. Rossetti has inscribed the book "To Miss L. Douglas Summerbell with the friendly regards of Wm. Rossetti June 1896." Written above this in William's hand is a six-line explanation of the pamphlet's publishing history. Bound in are five important signed autograph letters, seventeen pages in all, from William Rossetti to Miss Summerbell, written between 1896 and 1906, in which he discusses at length both Dante Gabriel, Christina and himself. In original buff printed wrappers that Summerbell had neatly sewn into limp green cloth along with the letters and laid into a 19th-century handmade leather case showing some rubbing. On the preliminary leaf of the cloth bound book is a note that it had passed to her friend, Ruth Johnston. From the collection of Gerald N. Wachs and included in an exhibition of his poetry collection at the Grolier Club in 1995. Pamphlet in very good collection bound into near fine cloth book. PRERAPH/071216.       Belleville, Illinois:: "Belleville Democrat" Print.,. 1869. Elephant folio broadside, 19" x 24." Printed with several different styles and sizes of typesettings and fonts, a few blank spaces completed in pencil manuscript. Old folds, light wear. Of the several names listed on this broadside, the names of the more prestigious individuals are printed first and in more prominent sized typesettings. Very Good. This broadside is the plea of prominent Belleville citizens to support the planned railroad projects in their County, scheduled for a vote in the upcoming election. The coal and iron markets were growing rapidly in Illinois, with large beds of coal between Collinsville and Belleville. Without a local railroad, coal was transported by wagon to Illinoistown and then by ferry across the Mississippi River. Since the late 1830's, when the State of Illinois nearly collapsed under the weight of excessively enthusiastic internal improvements, efforts to build the railroad had started and then failed. In the 1850s, several railroads were built but Belleville did not receive a station. With this broadside, the indefatigable Bellevillians try again. Several of the most prominent supporters mentioned in this broadside are Col. James Lowry Donaldson Morrison [1816-1888], Navy midshipman, Belleville lawyer, State Senator and U.S. Congressman. During the Mexican War, he was Lt. Colonel of Bissell's Regiment of Illinois Volunteers, and was honored for his services at Buena Vista. John Breese Hay [1834-1916] was State's Attorney for the 24th Judicial Circuit, Adjutant in the 130th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers during the Civil War, Republican Congressman, mayor of Belleville. J.M. Hay may [or may not] have been John Milton Hay, Lincoln's secretary, author [with Nicolay] of the multi-volume biography of Lincoln, and at the beginning of a distinguished career as diplomat and statesman. Governor Gustavus Koerner [1809-1896], born in Germany, moved to Illinois in 1833 and set up a law practice in Belleville. He held numerous State offices. During the Civil War he was a Colonel on the staffs of Generals Fremont and Halleck. He was a member of the Chicago Convention of 1860 which nominated Lincoln for president. Vital Jarrot [1805-1877] served in the Black Hawk War, was U.S. Indian Agent, part owner of the first railroad in Illinois, and established the first newspaper in East St. Louis. William H. Snyder [1825-1892] was a lawyer, judge, and member of the State Legislature. He served in the Mexican War, Fifth Illinois Volunteers. Not located on OCLC.

1869 Wisden Cricketers Almanac, Facsimile Wrappers

On offer here is an 1869 Wisden Cricketers Almanac in entirely original condition apart from the facsimile wrappers. 1869 is commonly regarded as the second scarcest Wisden after the 1875 edition. The copy on offer here has been recently fitted with facsimile wrappers which are in excellent, as new condition. The remainder of the book is entirely original. The title page has the odd very minor mark and the contents page has a little, very light foxing as does the last page - at page 120. Apart from this the contents are in absolutely immaculate, clean condition - original, unmarked and clean. A really excellent example of a very scarce year.

However, his original estimate of the costs involved fell well short, and by 1855 he closed his factory. A partnership with Thomas Sutton in Jersey begun in September of 1855, closed in 1857. La Photographie, ses Origines, ses Progrès, ses Transformations, is regarded as his enduring work, an accurate history of the first three decades of photography, illustrated with contemporary examples. The original mounted plates include; Blanquard-Évrard's 1852 printing of a Maxime Du Camp photograph from Egypte, Nubie, Palestine et Syrie; photo-lithographs by Zurcher; a heliogravure by Baldus; carbon prints by Ernest Edwards and Alphonse Braun, et al. There are three different editions with this title; one is of a smaller format, and one was issued in 1870 for presentation and has additional plates. Most copies of this quarto edition of 1869 have fourteen plates. The presentation of this copy to Alphonse Louis Poitevin is significant; Poitevin is responsible for the basic principles of photo-lithography, carbon printing, and collotype printing. Exceedingly rare, with OCLC locating only 14 copies of the various editions.

        George Cruikshank's Table-Book

London - Bell and Daldy, 1869 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A super copy of this wonderful Cruikshank volume in a great binding. Leatherbound volume with gilt detailing to the boards and spine, gilt foredge, marble paper pastedowns,?and illustrated throughout. George Cruikshank (September 27, 1792February 1, 1878) was an English caricaturist and book illustrator. Born in London, he was a member of the Cruikshank family of caricaturists and artists, the son of Scottish painter and caricaturist Isaac Cruikshank. Cruikshanks 60-year career began with political prints that attacked the royal family and leading politicians (in 1820 he received a royal bribe of 100 for a pledge not to caricature His Majesty (George III of the United Kingdom) in any immoral situation). His work included a personification of England named John Bull who was developed from about 1790 in conjunction with other British satirical artists such as James Gillray, and Thomas Rowlandson. Cruikshank replaced one of his major influences, James Gillray, as England's most popular satirist. For a generation he delineated Tories, Whigs and Radicals impartially. Satirical material came to him from every public eventwars abroad, the enemies of Britain (he was highly patriotic), the frolic, among other qualities, such as the weird and terrible, in which he excelled. Condition: The binding is tight and firm with both covers and all pages securely attached although the hinges are strained. There is some wear to the extremities including rubbing to the boards and minor bumping to the corners. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and isolated spot. Overall the volume is in very good condition indeed..

With a patriotic pride in her native land, Mrs. F. was desirous that the book should be entirely of Canadian production, without any foreign aid, and thus far her design has been carried out; whether successfully or not, remains for the public to decide. . And finally it was at last agreed that the Book of Canadian Wild Flowers should be the work of Mrs. Fitzgibbon, and the descriptions of the plants as delineated by her hand, should be selected and adapted to suit the subjects of the Plates from Mrs. Traill's MS.Toronto, December, 1868.
