      [Paris: Goupil, 1869]. Oblong folio. (17 x 24 1/2 inches). 60 albumen photographs (numbered 1-53, 90, 91, 93, 109, 113, 122 and 154), mounted onto India paper with printed captions in French and English. Images measuring approximately 6 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches. Expertly bound to style in half black morocco over period paper covered boards. Very rare collection of albumen photographs from the early period of photography in India. In 1864, at the young age of 19, Louis Rousselet arrived in India seeking to study the architecture and ancient ruins of the sub-continent. In 1866, after visiting the ruins at Dabhoi, Rousselet realized that his pencil sketches could never do justice in conveying the beauty of the elaborate architecture and carving. He would later write, "It was on seeing these generally unknown masterpieces at Dubbhoee that I regretted I had not the power of reproducing them by photography, and felt that it would be impossible to continue my explorations profitably without the assistance of that art. As soon, therefore, as I returned to Baroda, I applied myself seriously to learn photography; and with that view I procured from Bombay all the necessary apparatus" (Rousselet, India and its Native Princes, p. 122). From that point forward, Rousselet assiduously photographed the region. After six years of extensive overland travel, Rousselet returned to France to publish serially, and later as a book, an account of his experiences. That work is illustrated with many engravings after photographs taken by the author. Issued separately from the text, and likely only in a very small number for select friends and patrons, Rousselet printed 160 photographs from his journey. The 60 images present in this volume cover sites in the following places: Agra (5), Futtehpore- Sikri (5), Dholepore (2), Gwalior (10), Lashkar (3), Duttiah (4), Soonaghur (4), Barwa Sagur (3), Govindgurh (4), Jhansie (2), Oorcha (8), Kajraha (3), Oudeypour (3), Ajmeer (2), Ulwur (1), and Nagode (1). The majority of the images are architectural studies, including palaces, castles, temples, tombs and monuments, but also include city views, landscapes, ruins, forts and its peoples. Among the most spectacular plates are those treating the Taj Mahal, the ruins of Fatehpur-sikri, the summer palace of the Maharajah of Rewah (including a portrait of the Maharajah and his court), as well as the Mahadeva Temple. Although self- trained, Rousselet's photographs show incredible perception of the art. His images show strong contrasts, are artfully composed with elements in the foreground and are taken from appealing angles. Rousselet's artistic compositions are even more impressive considering the harsh conditions of the environment. He would later write that after visiting the Mahadeva Temple, "...the heat had become so overwhelming that I scarcely knew how to contrive to bear the temperature of my portable laboratory, -- indeed, what will always remain inexplicable to me, is how, in such a centre, I ever succeeded in preparing the plates with wet collodion, -- it is impossible to form an idea of the suffering and fatigue each one of the photographs I took at this period of my journey cost me..." (Rousselet, India and its Native Princes, p. 429). The condition of the images in this volume is quite good, with little to no fading and strong contrasts with purply tones. Only two collections of all 160 images are known to be extant (Duke University and a set identified by Lafont-Couturier and Renie as one privately held by descendents of Rousselet). Further attesting to the rarity of Rousselet's photographs, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France holds but 17 individual images. [With:] ROUSSELET, Louis-Theophile Marie. The battle is sometimes referred to as the Battle of Lime Ridge or Limestone Ridge. The battle was fought between an Irish-American invading force against Canadian regular troops. This was the largest of the Fenian Raids into Canada. The battle flag on the Fenian troops reads "I.R.A." BAL 3316. A Fine copy with a touch of oxidizing and fading to the spine, otherwise tight and clean. A common enough book, but extremely scarce in this condition. The last copy in comparable condition brought $10,000 (Sotheby's Library of an English Bibliophile Part II, 2011), but for a first issue copy. Twain's second book after "Jumping Frog," a humorous narrative of his travels through Europe and Israel with a group of American tourists on board a retired Civil War vessel. The author's most popular book during his lifetime, outselling what modern scholars consider his major literary works "Huckleberry Finn" and "Tom Sawyer." Fine.

        Autograph Letter, signed ("J. A. Garfield"), as Congressman from Ohio, to Ezra Booth Taylor of Warren, Ohio, acknowledging the receipt of $500

      Washington. D.C, 21 november 1869. 4to. 1 p., in ink, on letterhead of the House of Representatives. Fine . Ezra B. Taylor, a Republican lawyer and judge from Garfield's home state of Ohio, was elected Republican Representative to the 46th Congress to fill the vacancy created by Garfield's resignation to seek the Presidency. Taylor served several terms in Congress thereafter. In this letter to Taylor, Garfield writes, "Your favor of the 18th, inclosing a draft - for Five Hundred Dollars, is just received and I have endorsed the amount on your note. It comes just in time to aid me in a hard pinch - I have obtained a loan which will tide me over for the present -" Garfield pens an intriguing postscript: "I think it was right that the P.M. at Ravenna [Ohio] should be allowed a check line - & am glad to have been able to secure the allowance for E.T.E"

        Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie

      London: Thomas McLean, 1869. Lithograph, printed in colours, by H.M. Long. 18 1/2 x 32 1/4 inches. Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) was the nineteenth century chronicler par excellence of the American West. He undertook several expeditions to the Rocky Mountains and Yosemite Valley, where he made sketches of what would later become his most famous paintings. This particular work depicts light breaking through a bank of thunderclouds above a valley. Indians on foot and on horseback dash down a mountainside toward an encampment of teepees on the valley floor. This image epitomizes American nineteenth century landscape painting at its most intense and rapturous. This chromolithograph was issued by Thomas McLean as a pair to The Rocky Mountains (Landers Peak). It was reported at the time that no fewer than twenty, and as many as thirty, stones were used to capture the rich, sumptuous palette of the original painting, which is now in the Brooklyn Museum of Art.       1869 - London - Chapman and Hall, 1866 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A uniformly bound collection of the works of Thomas Carlyle. Carlyle (4 December 1795 5 February 1881) was a Scottish philosopher, satirical writer, essayist, historian and teacher during the Victorian era. His combination of a religious temperament with loss of faith in traditional Christianity, made Carlyle's work appealing to many Victorianswho were grappling with scientific and political changes that threatened the traditional social order. He brought a trenchant style to his social and political criticism and a complex literary style to his works. His works themselves were incredibly diverse, a fact testified to in this set which features fiction, histories, lectures, essays, biographies, translations, and satires. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION dated 1869 on title page, (Part I), small 8vo, 165 x 110 mm, 6½ x 4¼ inches, rebound long ago in plain dark green morocco grained cloth, gilt title and 4 gilt rules to spine, edges marbled, tan endpapers lined white, frontispiece and 3 engraved plates by "May Alcott", pages: iv, [2], [7]-341, (1). Book leaning slightly, binding slightly rubbed on extremities, neat name on reverse of front endpaper, margins of frontispiece slightly trimmed and laid on paper, tip of lower corner of original margin missing, plates lightly browned, title page slightly spotted and with small repair to lower corner and tiny one to upper corner, the next five leaves also have small repair to lower corner, diminishing in size, brown spotting and light soiling throughout, heavy in places, mainly to margins but occasionally to text (all easily readable) and also affecting 3 plates, 30 mm (1½") closed tear to top of of 1 page affecting text only on recto, another 10 mm (½") to 1 lower margin, both neatly repaired without loss, one quarter of page 221 faintly stained blue, no loss of legibility. A good copy. Little Women was first published in America between 1st and 15th of October 1868 and dated 1868. This was the first part and a second part followed in April 1869, known now in England as Good Wives. The first Engish edition of Little Women (first part) was announced for the Christmas market in November and December 1868. It was the practice of English publishers of children's books to date them for the following year so that they would continue to sell throughout the year after Christmas. Sampson and Low's English Part II, issued with the same title as Part I (as in America), appeared in May 1869 and was dated 1869 and described as "Part Second". In 1870 Sampson Low reissued the 2 parts in 1 volume. The British Library copy of our book was received in 1868 but dated 1869 (NSTC). No copy is currently listed in the British Library catalogues. There is a small circular sticker with numbers written on it affixed to the front cover, which features a decorative gilded illustration of a tribesman. The previous owner's name is written in pencil on the front free endpaper, and there are additional light notations in pencil on the half-title and facing page, although none to the interior of the text. The binding is intact, although beginning to loosen in certain spots and in need of repair. Several leaves of the text remain unopened. From 1852 to 1864 Harriet Beecher Stowe and her family lived in Andover, Mass., where Calvin was professor at the Andover Theological Seminary. Among the more prominent members of the Andover community at the time was Martha Punchard, the widow of a wealthy banker and notable town benefactor. Benjamin H. Punchard, who bequeathed $50,000 to Andover for the purpose of founding its first public school. As Benjamin and Martha were childless, they adopted Elizabeth (as well as one other daughter), who married Hall Faile Baldwin on February 22, 1870. Although by that time the Stowes had moved to Hartford, the present collection makes it clear that a lasting friendship had been formed. Tipped into the copy of UNCLE TOM'S CABIN are two autograph letters: 1) Small invitation in Mrs. Stowe's handwriting, addressed to "Miss Punchard," and reading "Mrs. Stowe would be happy to see Miss E. Punchard at her home at 7:00 January 17, 1870. Dear Lizzy - This party is this week expressly [underlined] for you [underlined] before you go to Nyack." 2) Letter from Mrs. Stowe, dated February 14, 1870, to Lizzie's mother, Martha Punchard: "My dear Mrs. Punchard, I am sorry that I shall not be able to come help you give away Lizzie - what a good woman you must be to give her to any body and how grateful somebody ought to be to you as well as to her. Dear friend, I know it is a troubled joy we mothers feel in giving what is dearest to us to be had & held by another. It is the most disinterested thing-only we can't help ourselves. Well we will console with each other & meanwhile I wish you a sunny day and all manner of kind & sunny influences upon your wedding. May you have a bright day & the smile of the sun & God bless you. Your loving friend, H. B. Stowe." Duodecimo, Wrappers; »»» The first printed appearance of the popular play that Lincoln was watching when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865. Laura Keene had acquired the rights to Tom Taylor's "Our American Cousin" in 1858, and opened it that year in her theatre in New York. The play was a great success and Ms. Keene was very careful to protect her property. Besides the original manuscript owned by Keene and one other manuscript copy found in the estate of Joshua Silsbee, the play only existed in the manuscript prompt books used by the actors until Ms. Keene finally allowed this version of the play to be printed in 1869. Even then, despite its tragic link to Lincoln's murder, the play retained enough popularity that Keene was careful to prominently state on the title page that the work was "Printed, but not published." Copyright law at the time was not very protective of dramatic works deemed to have been "published." (See Bryan, "The Great American Myth," p. 176; Taylor, "Our American Cousin: the Play that Changed History," p. 25.) This copy is bound in original plain light blue wrappers over a sewn binding. Original cast from the 1858 opening at Laura Keene's Theatre, New York, appears on verso of title page. The last words that Lincoln heard on this earth appear on page 37. Heel of spine has some shallow chewing along last 3/4," title and year lightly pencilled on front cover, title penned in contemporary ink on spine. A nice example of this scarce piece.

Front free end-paper with the original printed title-label (as the Geneva-copy). Some leaves with a bit of light soiling. Corners very neatly strengthened (no loss). All in all a very good copy. 23 pp. The works was issued without wrappers, without title-page, with nomention of place, year, editor, printer, or translator. The printed title-label is also present in the one other copy we have been able to locate (Geneva).. Extremely rare first edition of the first Russian translation of the Communist Manifesto, Marx' and Engels' groundbreaking work of communist propaganda, "undoubtedly the most widespread, the most international production of all Socialist literature, the common platform acknowledged by millions of working men from Siberia to California" (Preface to the 1888-edition, p. 3), without which the Russian Revolution would not have taken place.This first Russian edition of the Communist Manifesto must be seen as the seed of the birth of communism, as it is this work that leads directly to the Russian Revolution, the epitomizing event of communism. The Communist Manifesto played an enormous role in the creation of the Russian communist government and it wasn't until Marx ideas, through the Communist Manifesto, were implemented in Russia, that real notice was taken of the work on a large scale. The Communist Manifesto became the road map for revolutionary workers worldwide, and in 1917 Russia's working class changed the world forever - under the banner of Communism, of revolutionary Marxism, it took power in its own name. Thus, the Russian Revolution became the first successful social revolution in history. Lenin and other leaders of the Russian Revolution based their strategy and tactics upon the perspectives that Marx and Engels had set forth in The Communist Manifesto. But the Communist Manifesto not only provided the blueprint for the Russian Revolution, in providing the teachings that formed it, it also predicted a revolution between the lower class (the proletariat) and the upper class (the bourgeoisie). Marx and Engels state in the preface to the second Russian Edition, 1882:"The first Russian edition of the Manifesto of the Communist Party, translated by Bakunin, was published early in the 'sixties by the printing office of the Kolokol. Then the West could see in it (the Russian edition of the Manifesto) only a literary curiosity. Such a view would be impossible today.What a limited field the proletarian movement occupied at that time (December 1847) is most clearly shown by the last section: the position of the Communists in relation to the various opposition parties in various countries. Precisely Russia and the United States are missing here. It was the time when Russia constituted the last great reserve of all European reaction, when the United States absorbed the surplus proletarian forces of Europe through immigration. Both countries provided Europe with raw materials and were at the same time markets for the sale of its industrial products. Both were, therefore, in one way of another, pillars of the existing European system.[...]And now Russia! During the Revolution of 1848-9, not only the European princes, but the European bourgeois as well, found their only salvation from the proletariat just beginning to awaken in Russian intervention. The Tsar was proclaimed the chief of European reaction. Today, he is a prisoner of war of the revolution in Gatchina, and Russia forms the vanguard of revolutionary action in Europe.The Communist Manifesto had, as its object, the proclamation of the inevitable impending dissolution of modern bourgeois property. It came about, partly, from decades of class struggles between the workers and poor peasants on one side, and the wealthy capitalists and landlords on the other.But even with their decades of class struggles, a socialist revolution in Russia would have been impossible without a communist organization that carried on the revolutionary tradition of the Communist Manifesto.The organization that carried on this revolution based on the Manifesto was Lenin's party, popularly known as the Bolsheviks. The Russian communist party counted some of the most dedicated revolutionary workers and it embodied the historical experience of the working-class movement. Had it not been for the programme, the slogans, and the tactics taken from the Communist Manifesto, however, the workers' movement would have quite certainly lost its way.It is in the Manifesto that Marx and Engels taught that "the emancipation of the proletariat can only be achieved by the workers themselves." They explained how capitalism works, how workers must sell their labor-power to a boss, how the workers create all value, and how, by not paying the workers the full value of what they produce through their labor, the bosses rob the fruits as profit."Let the ruling classes tremble at a Communistic revolution. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win."During the late 19th century, the Communist Manifesto began circulating more widely in Russia, Marx's ideas became more widely known amongst the working class, Marxist study circles were formed amongst the political workers in the factories, uprisings began, and at the beginning of the 20th century, Russian workers created the first workers' councils. And finally, in 1917, the Russian Revolution began."A wave of civil war swept over the whole of Russia, and everywhere we achieved victory with extraordinary ease precisely because the fruit had ripened, because the masses had already gone through the experience of collaboration with the bourgeoisie," Lenin said, and added : "Our slogan, "All Power to the Soviets", which the masses had tested in practice by long historical experience, had become part of their flesh and blood".The implementation of the Communist Manifesto in Russia meant that the work became noticed worldwide and was deemed one of the most dangerous books ever written. The Communist Manifesto not only uncannily predicted the events of the Russian Revolution and played a foundational role in the creation of the Russian communist government, it also still holds incite in to modern class struggle.It is obvious that Marx' and Engels' Communist Manifesto had an inconceivable effect upon Russia. The Manifesto inspired the people of Russia to create a revolution using the ideas presented in it, basing a new government upon it. The workers of Russia set out to create the world revolution that Marx and Engels presented in their Manifesto, and thus this groundbreaking work came to be self-fulfilling in its prophecies. It predicted - and thereby caused - the Russian Revolution and founded modern class struggle. "The first Russian translation of the Manifesto of the Communist Party was made by Bakunin, who despite being one of Marx and Engels' most pronounced opponents in the working class movement, saw the great revolutionary importance contained within the Manifesto. Published in Geneva in 1869 (printing it in Russia was impossible due to state censorship), Bakunin's translation was not completely accurate, and was replaced a decade later by Plekhanov's translation in 1882, for which both Marx and Engels wrote a preface." (Note to the preface of the 1882 Russian translation).The work was issued without wrappers, without title-page, with no mention of place, year, editor, printer, or translator, but the typeface and the fine, thin paper are the same as those of the "Kolokol", the first Russian censorship-free weekly newspaper in Russian, published in Geneva on February 15th, 1869, printed by L. Czerniecki. This first Russian edition of the Manifesto constitutes the second full translation into Russian of any of Marx' works, only preceded by "Statutes" of the Internationale, which appeared in the Russian translation of Becher's "Die Arbeiterfrage...", also 1869. The translation of the Manifesto is made after the German Hirschfeld-edition (possibly after J. Ph Becker's copy) and is attributed to Bakunin, not least due to Marx' and Engels' statement of this in their 1882 preface - for more specific information on the translator, the translation and the publishing see Andréas pp. 49-53. "The edition only had limited distribution, probably due to loss during illegal transport in Russia, and seizures." (Andréas, p. 53). The only contemporary known to have had a copy was the populist Zaicnevski. Between 1870 and 1875 several manuscripts of Russian translations of the Manifesto were seized - they were presumably copies of the present translation. A copy of this first Russian translation was in Lenin's private library.As is evident, the seminal first Russian translation of this groundbreaking work is of the utmost scarcity. OCLC lists merely 1 copy, namely in Geneva, where the book was printed. This copy corresponds exactly to ours. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands and gilt ornaments and title to spine, marbled endpapers. Moderate rubbing to extremities, heavier rubbing to boards with some wear to corners, hinges cracked. Some browning to text, light foxing in a few places, chipping to edges of a few leaves. Early owner signatures and small lawyer's ownership stamp, interior otherwise clean. * First edition. This is a treatise on Brazilian civil procedure for layman. It is unusually comprehensive for a book of this kind and seems to have been written for elite members of society. A second edition was published in 1904. The Italian Library Union Catalogue lists an undated edition with identical pagination as the 1869 edition; it is dated 1867. OCLC locates 1 copy (at the Library of Congress, which also has a 1904 edition not listed on OCLC).

        Our American Cousin: a Drama, in 3 Acts

      (S.l.) (s.n.) 1869. First printing. Duodecimo, Wrappers , 46 pages. Condition: Very good. The first printed appearance of the popular play that Lincoln was watching when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865. Laura Keene had acquired the rights to Tom Taylor's "Our American Cousin" in 1858, and opened it that year in her theatre in New York. The play was a great success and Ms. Keene was very careful to protect her property. Besides the original manuscript owned by Keene and one other manuscript copy found in the estate of Joshua Silsbee, the play only existed in the manuscript prompt books used by the actors until Ms. Keene finally allowed this version of the play to be printed in 1869. Even then, despite its tragic link to Lincoln's murder, the play retained enough popularity that Keene was careful to prominently state on the title page that the work was "Printed, but not published." Copyright law at the time was not very protective of dramatic works deemed to have been "published." (See Bryan, "The Great American Myth, " p. 176; Taylor, "Our American Cousin: the Play that Changed History, " p. 25.) This copy is bound in original plain light blue wrappers over a sewn binding. Original cast from the 1858 opening at Laura Keene's Theatre, New York, appears on verso of title page. The last words that Lincoln heard on this earth appear on page 37. Heel of spine has some shallow chewing along last 3/4, " title and year lightly pencilled on front cover, title penned in contemporary ink on spine. A nice example of this scarce piece. Americana

"Dr. Bechtinger arrived at Hawaii from San Francisco in the fall of 1868.. where he visited the volcano. At a later date he made an excursion to Haleakala on Maui. There are considerable descriptions of both the natural history and the native Hawaiians as well as medical matters, "particularly the doctor's interest in lepers on Molokai, " Forbes, V.3, p. 475). The frontispiece and three images depict Hawaiians with leprosy and there is a woodcut view of Kaneohe from the Nuuanu Pali. OCLC shows seven copies, with only two outside Germany: at Leiden and the BL. Minor wear at spine, front board foxed, endpapers toned, scattered foxing, library bookplate on front paste down, small faded stamp on title page, overall still a very good copy.

      A fine copy, in original wrappers, of the first book explicitly devoted to solar energy, whose publication coincided with the unveiling of Mouchot's largest solar steam engine, the so-called 'Sun Engine', in 1869, which caused a revolution in the development of solar thermal power.<br/><br/> Auguste Mouchot was a French mathematics teacher, who in the 1860's became famous as the designer (and patent-taker) of the first machine that generated electricity with solar thermal energy electricity by the exposure of the sun. Mouchot began his work with solar energy in 1860 after expressing grave concerns about his country's dependence on coal. His work on solar energy and on the development of his sun machine forms the basis for the later developments on solar energy. "The work of Adams, Ericsson, and Shuman had been directly influenced by the solar conceptions of Augustin Mouchot, a man who arrived on the scene in nineteenth century France at precisely that moment when his ideas were likely to attract the most attention. It was a time when French industrial might was at a peak and her leaders open to new ideas, none more so than her emperor. In 1867, to commemorate the explosion of technology that had accompanied the industrial and artistic carnival over which he had presided for 15 years, France's Napoleon III decided to invite the whole world to an international exposition that he would host in Paris." (Kryza, The Power of Light, p. 147). <br/><br/> "His initial experiments involved a glass-enclosed, water-filled iron cauldron, in which sunlight passed through a glass cover, heating the water. This simple arrangement boiled water, but it also produced small quantities of steam. Mouchot added a reflector to concentrate additional radiation onto the cauldron, thus increasing the steam output. He succeeded in using his apparatus to operate a small, conventional steam engine. Impressed by Mouchot's device, Emperor Napoleon III offered financial assistance, which Mouchot used to produce refinements to the energy system. Mouchot's work help lay the foundation for our current understanding of the conversion of solar radiation into mechanical power driven by steam.<br/><br/> "The publication of his book on solar energy, 'La Chaleur solaire et ses Applications industrielles' (1869), coincided with the unveiling of the largest solar steam engine he had yet built. Nabokov said that the fate of its hero, Humphrey "used to bring a more specialized lump to one's throat than anything in Dickens or Daudet." . Title-page a cancel, with "All rights reserved" below the imprint First few leaves foxed. Presentation copy, inscreibed: "Pussie Hobhouse with Florence Montgomery's love 56 Cadogan Place May 15th 1870." Later ownership signature on front free endpaper. A very good copy. "Montgomery's breakthrough was with her third work, Misunderstood (1869), whose preface states (p. v): 'The following is not a child's story. It is intended for those who are interested in children.' It is the story of Humphrey Duncombe, whose widowed father thinks him naughty and thoughtless, but whose high spirits conceal deep thoughts and yearning for the love of the father and the dead mother. There is just time for the father to appreciate how wrong he has been before the boy's heart-rending death. This book remained in print throughout her life, and her later fiction appeared as 'by the author of Misunderstood'. A notorious tear-jerker, it invites the reader to identify with the neglected child who makes the grown-ups feel guilty. Such stories, Montgomery made clear in the preface to Thrown together (2 vols., 1872), were not suitable for children to read as she was obliged 'to side, as it were, with the children against the parents'" (Oxford DNB).

Beautiful publication of the memoirs of Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), the Scottish historical novelist and poet, who wrote famous works like Ivanhoe, Rob Roy & Waverley. As his fame grew he was granted the title of (1st) baronet, becoming Sir Walter Scott. Each volume with frontispiece-engraving and individual engraved half-title page, protected by tissue-guard. Title-pages with decorative red and black initials. Vol. I with 84 page "Memoir of the early life of Sir Walter Scott, written by Himself." Minor age wear, scuffing and minor staining on binding. Head and tail of spines on few volumes chipped. Sporadic staining on front and rear endpapers, minor foxing to few pages. Slight spotting on page fore-and bottom page edges. Complete ten volume set, tight copies in overall very good condition.

        The Rocky Mountains (Lander&#39;s Peak)

      London: Thomas McLean, 1869. Lithograph, printed in colours, by Jacob Lutz, printed by Kell Brothers. 19 x 32 inches. In 1859, Bierstadt joined an expedition to the West led by Colonel Frederick W. Lander. This work was painted four years later in New York as a tribute to Lander who died in 1862 after a distinguished military career. Bierstadt found it fitting to name the central summit in memory of his fallen friend. The painting was a huge success and was quickly bought by the English railroad magnate James McHenry for $25,000. Its beauty lies in Bierstadt&#39;s faithful delineation of the Shoshone Indian village encampment and carefully rendered foliage in the foreground, with a middle distance featuring a reflective body of water and the exaggerated snow-capped peak in the background towering over the entire scene. The chromolithograph, printed by the Kell Brothers, preserves Bierstadt&#39;s sumptuous palette. This Western paradise immediately appealed to the imagination of most Americans, who had only read about the untamed frontier. The original painting is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.         AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT, SIGNED, OF HIS VERSES ENTITLED "THE SEASONS" (1869)

      Morris, William. AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT, SIGNED ("William Morris") OF HIS VERSES ENTITLED "THE SEASONS" [1869]. 16 lines in four quatrains, with divisional titles for 'Spring' ("Spring am I, too soft of heart..."), 'Summer' ("Summer looked for long am I..."), 'Autumn' ("Laden Autumn, here I stand..."), and 'Winter' ("Ah! Shall Winter mend your case?"); with three lines bearing minor revision. One folio page, written boldly in black ink on the recto of a single sheet of blue paper watermarked 1869. There is light overall wear, some folds are a tiny bit fragile (but entirely intact); there is the trace of an album guard visible only on the verso. Overall, in Very Good condition with much eye appeal. "These verses were written to complement & embellish the eponymous paintings of 1869 by his lifelong friend, Edward Burne-Jones. The pictures, upright full-length personifications of the seasons, with Morris's lines inscribed in a cartouche at the foot of each figure, were painted for Liverpool shipping magnate Frederick Leyland (now private collection, they are illustrated by Christopher Wood, Burne-Jones, 1998, pp. 70-71). The text, in fact, differs from that used by Burne-Jones [in that] lines 3 and 4 of 'Autumn' are transposed, and the quatrain for 'Winter' is completely different. An expanded version entitled 'Verses for Pictures' with an extra stanza at the beginning & end for 'Day' and 'Night' - was published in Morris's Poems by the Way (1891); the text there accords with that used by Burne-Jones. (Michael Silverman, London, Catalogue 28, 2010). In addition, these verses written by Morris were used by Burne-Jones (with a slightly revised text) for his 1873 pencil drawing "The Masque Of The Four Seasons" (Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery). And in 1878, Morris further created a calligraphic version of the poem which sports text that precisely corresponds with our version, entitled "The Lapse Of The Year," with the assistance of Burne-Jones who provided gouache illustrations in miniature (Victoria & Albert Museum). While letters written by Morris are plentiful, poetry manuscripts by William Morris are rarely seen in commerce. Auction records for the last fifteen years show not a single example. And one such as this, with its verses directly incorporated into Burne-Jones drawings, paintings, and illustrated calligraphy, is of considerable importance and desirability. . Signed.         Bird&#39;s Eye View of Loda, Iroquois Co. Illinois 1869

      Chicago: Chicago Lith. Co., 1869. 22" X 17". Good plus. Mildly age toned, more so about the edges. Bright, nice original print of this rare color lithograph of this small central Illinois town, drawn by A. Ruger (Chicago artist whose printed name appears at lower left). What&#39;s fascinating about this particular specimen is that&#39;s it&#39;s extra-illustrated: That is, some early owner or more likely the artist or publisher has neatly pencilled in two columns of building identifications and addresses in a miniscule hand in the blank areas at lower left (13 structures) and lower right (13 structures), with corresponding numbers pencilled alongside those buildings in the image. Six structures are identified in print in two small columns at immediate right and left of the title, thus these additions begin with number "7" and go up through number "30." He has also neatly pencilled in other geographic features unidentified in the image ("Leckie&#39;s Lake," "Large Dam," "Picnic Grounds," "Oak St.," "99 miles Chi," "Cooper Shop," even a boat in the lake noted as "Petrell," etc.) Along the top blank margin he pencils in "EAST" in a large Times Roman script, in the left margin "NORTH" and in the right margin "South." Immediately below the printed title, he also adds "The Loda Distillery Employs 100 men, consumes 1,000 bushels of grain / and pays over $2,000 Tax to Government per day." It&#39;s our belief these were additions meant for a projected second printing -- which never came to pass. These handwritten additions thus constitute a one-of-a-kind record of these structures, an exhaustive inventory of this town&#39;s 1869 structures. In addition to this unique feature, this print has an interesting provenance: It comes from the collection of Illinois&#39; former two-term senator, ADLAI E. STEVENSON III (b. 1930), to whom it was handed down within the family. The likelihood is strong this print originated with his great-grandfather, ADLAI E. STEVENSON I (1835-1914), who served as vice president under Grover Cleveland. In 1852, when Adlai I was 16 years old, the Stevenson family moved from Kentucky to Bloomington, Illinois -- 42 miles west of Loda -- and the Stevenson family has been intimately connected with Bloomington ever since. It&#39;s perfectly reasonable they would have wanted this bird&#39;s eye view of their neighboring town -- which Adlai I then handed down to his son, who handed it down to his son Adlai II (governor of Illinois), and from there to the current Adlai. An extremely unusual copy of an exceptionally scarce print. Framed in a vintage (not contemporary with the print, but circa 1970) 1" wooden frame under a single new cream matte (overall dimensions 29½" X 23½"), making for a clean, simple presentation. John W. Reps (in "Views & Viewmakers of Urban America") shows only the Library of Congress copy. HEBERT 166. REPS 900.
