Some previous owner's names and notations in neat ink and pencil on the endsheets and pastedowns of each volume, otherwise the pages are clean and unmarked. These four works were the only books published in the Deseret Alphabet. The print runs for the Book of Mormon are usually cited as five-hundred, making this one of the rarer Book of Mormons. The two readers were based on the McGuffey manuals, and were introduced in public schools of the Territory in 1868. The Deseret Alphabet was introduced in 1854 and was created by Parley P. Pratt, Heber C. Kimball and George D. Watt. Made up of thirty-eight characters( apparently it was and partially based on Pitman shorthand) to correlate with basic sounds in the English language, the Deseret Alphabet was intended to be used to help simplify the principles of the English language. The Deseret News announced in its issue of January 19, 1854, "The Board [of Regents] have held frequent sittings this winter, with the sanguine hope of simplifying the English Language, and especially its orthography. After many fruitless attempts to render the common alphabet of the day subservient to their purpose, they found it expedient to invent an entirely new and original set of characters." Although only a written language, Brigham Young had high hopes for the new language, firmly believing it would unite the many foreign converts that were streaming into Utah from Europe. The creation of the language was one of the more unusual ideas of Brigham Young, and never was fully embraced by the Mormons. The Deseret Alphabet was abandoned shortly after Young's death.         REPRINT: CHIKUTO SHIKUNSHI GAFU: ALBUM OF PAINTINGS OF THE FOUR PARAGONS: BAMBOO

[Kyoto n.d. ca 1868 Unsodo]. Dark grey boards, very clean,. accordion folded, 2 vol. set, 18 x 26.5 cm.,[29]double color. Sumi type woodcut illustrations, bright copy, reprint of the. Kyoto 1854 First Edition, complete, nicely done. SCARCE. A LOVELY ZEN INSPIRED ILLUSTRATED SKETECHBOOK A lovely book, with tender illustrations from the Zen and Confucian genre. Illustrates flowers, grasses, rocks, large number of bamboos, plum, chrysanthemum, grapes, ancient pine trees & ordhids. Reminiscent of the Chinese classics: MUSTARD SEED GARDEN, and TEN BAMBOO. A stunning old reprint edition. * This is a famous and illusive book ! Nakabayashi Chikutoh lived between 1775-1853, was a native of Owari province, but spent most of his life in Kyoto, where he studied under the celebrated Miyasaki Impo. He was known for his rather peculiar painting technique, using his paint as dry as possible. His work was chiefly in landscape painting, although some of the pictures of bamboos left by him are very fine. * Other signatures used by him [studio names] were Seisho. Narimasa, Hakumei, Taigen-an, Yusai and Tozan Inshi. * He used his great skill and artistry to leave a legacy of other books: CHIKUTOH GAFU; YUSAI GAFU; CHIKUTO SANSUI GAKOH, CHIKUTOH SANJIN JIMBUTSU, and this title, published from 1812-1852 respectively. Much of above extracted from L. Brown, see citation in bibliography. * Per Hillier: The most eminent among the teachers [of Chinese -style painting] of the time was Nakabayashi Chikutoh. His principal master was Kamiya Tenyu, by whose notable collection of Chinese paintings Chikutoh was no doubt led in the direction of Nanga [style], and an association with Baitsu early in his career may have helped to broaden his outlook. Ultimately, he became of the leading art theorists and wrote several books on painting, beginning with one, as early as 1801....gave some notion of his quiet, reticent kind of painting, often carried out in Sumi, of a warmth of tone and variety of brush-marks that are his hall-marks. [p.923-4]. * His works are clearly influenced by and reminiscent of the most celebrated of all Chinese illustrated books, THE TEN BAMBOO STUDIOI and the MUSTARD SEED GARDEN [please inquire as we have these titles in stock] from the 18th century in what has been called "boneless manner" that is printed without lines or commonly referred to as the 'Shikunshi" painting tradition or style. This technique was often utilized by Zen eccentrics who painted in the Chinese manner and what Hillier cites as "dream landscapes" on p.75, wherein he includes Chikutoh and later Nanga artists. * CONTENTS: Volume 1: Orchid and Bamboo: 15 double-folds, illustrating 4 orchids and 9 bamboos; volume 2: Plum and Chrysanthemum: 17 double-folds, illustrates 6 plums, 4 chrysanthemums and 6 copies of ancient works. All illustrations are of the line type with subtle Sumi ink wash. * This is truly a stunning and unique study by an even more obscure and unusual artist. This work was done in the Zen eccentric style is superbly charming, from its stylized title slip, written in Kanbun [Chinese style] introduction and Spartan drawing techniques is reminiscent of the Chinese Ch'an [Zen] monks technique. * Check with us to see if we have any others by this artist.

Shanghai Flowers Presented to James White by his Wife on his Birthday, April X 1868. An album of original watercolours

1868 (But drawings dated 1845 - 1847), Shanghai 1868 - Quarto. Original hardgrained morocco, the upper cover panelled in blind with raised panels, gilt metal clasp. One thick paper leaf with calligraphic manuscript title in red, black and blue, heightened in gilt; 2 page manuscript list of contents, 49 original botanical watercolours. An excellent album of very fine watercolours of flowers painted in China. Each watercolour identified in ink on the mat by the artist, the subjects also identified on all of the drawings and 26 of the drawings with additional inscriptions identifying them as having been done in "Shanghae" and giving the date when they were carried out, in addition a number also include the initials M.W. Mrs. James White was a botanical artist of considerable talent, who produced the present selection during a three year period in Shanghai in the mid 1840's. It was 20 years later when the album was assembled as a birthday gift for her husband. The species depicted are all of attractive plants and are a mixture of Chinese natives with imports that evidently thrived in Shanghai. Evidence of the title and inscriptions suggest that the album passed from James White to his son, the well-known landscape artist James Talmage White. This album once contained fifty watercolour drawings according to the list of contents; number 11 seems to have been removed some time ago. Provenance: James White; by descent to James Talmage White; Linda (sister of James Talmage White); purchased by Donald Heald Rare Books ca. 2006; a private American collector.         The grammar of ornament

Bernard Quaritch, 15 Piccadilly 1868 - Rebound in fine modern 3/4 burgundy leather over marbled boards. All edges gilt. Gilt ruled. Clean, unmarked pages. Chromolithographic plates. 157 pages illustrations, One hundred and twelve plates. 35 cm. Early owner's signatures on title. Owen Jones was a London-born architect and designer of Welsh descent. A versatile architect and designer, he was also one of the most influential design theorists of the nineteenth century. He helped pioneer modern color theory, and his theories on flat patterning and ornament still resonate with contemporary designers today. The first 19 chapters presented key examples of ornament from a number of sources which were diverse both historically and geographically - notably examining the Middle East in the chapters on Arabian, Turkish, Moresque (Alhambra) and Persian ornament. The final chapter, titled "Leaves and Flowers from Nature" acknowledged that "in the best periods of art, all ornament was based upon an observation of the principles which regulate the arrangement of form in nature" and that "true art consists of idealising, and not copying, the forms of nature". Christopher Dresser, Owen Jones' most well-known protege, contributed one of the plates in this final chapter, and he was concurrently presenting theories on natural-form ornament in his famous botanical lectures at the Government School of Design in the mid-1850s. In The Grammar of Ornament, Jones gathered together these samples of ornament as the best examples of decoration in an attempt to encourage designers to follow his lead in examining the underlying principles contained within the broad history of ornament and polychromy. The complete section on Holothuroidea or Sea Cucumber."This monograph is of particular importance to the holothuroids taxonomy for four reasons. It was one of the first times that the (later recognized) hyperdiverse marine fauna of the Indo-West Pacific triangle was comprehensively investigated. Ninety-two species or varieties recognized proved to be new to science. It was one of the first works where the ossicle assemblage was consistently and extensively used to recognize and characterize taxa. The classification proposed was the first in holothuroid systematics that was based on the theory of evolution" (Y. Samyn, A. Smirvov & C. Massin.
