Circulars, Etc. Issued by the Commissioner of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, from the Organization of Said Bureau to December 31, 1867, with Copies of Acts and Joint Resolutions of Congress and Proclamation by the President, Relating to Refugees and Freedmen and Said Bureau. Includes: General Order No. 1 (The Emancipation Proclamation), General Order No. 50 (The Civil Rights Act of 1866), and General Order No. 91 with Circulars 13 & 15 (Forty Acres and a Mule)

Washington DC: Various, 1867. Half Leather. Very good. 12mo (5" x 7.5"). This official sammelband (collection of separately printed works that have been bound together) contains over 120 different documents, most originally 5" x 8" but trimmed to uniform size. Most of the documents are Circulars published by the Bureau over the printed signature of Major General O. O. Howard, its Commissioner, however there are also a number of other higher-level War Department General Orders promulgating official acts, laws, and a proclamation. A 28-page index is included in the back of the book. Paper, type, page numbering and issuing agencies of each included document vary. Sound binding; the front hinge is just starting to crack. The documents are in nice shape, clean with almost no wear. The cover has some minor wear and rubbing; the gilt spine title remains legible. There is a diagonal fold to the top corner of the front free endpaper and fly-leaf. This important collection of documents was issued by the Freedmen's Bureau (a component of the War Department established to aid former slaves), probably as a ready reference for use in its offices throughout the South during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. Most of the documents are quite mundane and address routine administrative concerns, however as a whole, they provide considerable insight about the Bureau's mission and the magnitude of its problems. Several documents in the volume are of special significance including: General Orders No. 1, dated January 2, 1863 - "By the President of the United States of America. A Proclamation." (The Emancipation Proclamation); General Orders 91, dated May 12, 1865, which established the Bureau and contained the famous (or infamous, depending upon your view) Section 4 which authorized the Bureau to rent up to "forty acres" of "land within the insurrectionary States . . . [that had been] abandoned, or . . . acquired . . . by confiscation" to former male slaves; and General Orders No. 50, dated July 21, 1866 - the Civil Rights Act of 1866 (the precursor of the 16th Amendment) and afforded "equal protection" under the law to former slaves. Interestingly, the original Circular 13, dated July 28, 1865 is not included; in its place is a Circular issued later, but post-dated to read July 28, 1865, that simply reads, "Will not be published." In the original Circular 13, Howard instructed Bureau agents and Army officers to give priority to the Congressional mandate of land distribution over President Johnson's declaration of amnesty for white southerners specifically noting, "The pardon of the President will not be understood to extend to the surrender of abandoned or confiscated property which by law has been 'set apart for Refugees and Freedmen." Johnson immediately countermanded the circular and personally wrote a revised version with far stricter criteria which had the effect of drastically reducing the amount of land available for redistribution and in many places stopped land redistribution completely. Very scarce. As of 2016, no examples appear in the trade (although one excised copy of the Emancipation Proclamation is listed) and there are no auction records showing at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub. OCLC shows copies of the volume held by 14 institutions.

      - 2 in 1 Bd. Folio (497 x 330 mm). Erst 1867 und kurz nach seinem Ableben erschien dann Etienne Reys mit Lithographien nach seinen eigenen Zeichnungen ausgestattetes Reisewerks, "a more complete posthumous work where lithographs replace engravings . (Rey) published a beautiful work in two volumes illustrated with sensitive lithographies which make us regret not to have known the originals. These must have been good given the literary sense of the author and his humour which was totally lacking in Chenavard . We do not possess Etienne Rey's sketches. A few numbered folios which have been appearing on the art market for some years cause us to think that such a collection existed and is today dismantled; tracings made byChenavard's hands, taken from the painter's drawings, are all that remain" (François Tomas). In realizing an old dream of their youth and to receive an intuitive impression from the monuments they had studied in the books, the painter Etienne Rey and his two friends, the architects Antoine-Marie Chenavard (1787-1883) and Jean-Michel Dalgabio (1788-1852) traveled to Greece from the end of August 1843 to April 1844, with a shorter trip by Rey and Chenavard alone to Turkey and Egypt. While these two remained always together Dalgabio was often on his own. Their original plan and efforts to publish a travel account all three together was baffled by the1848 revolution.         Les Fleurs Animées

1867. first edition. Grandville's Favorite Work"Poetic and Gracious Originality, Dexterity of Mind and Observation"[GRANDVILLE, J.J., illustrator]. DELORD, Taxile. Les Fleurs Animées. Introductions Par Alph. Karr, Texte Par Taxile Delord Première Partie [&] Deuxième Partie. Paris: Gabriel De Gonet, Éditeur, 1847. First edition. Two large octavo volumes (10 3/8 x 7 3/16 inches; 264 x 183 mm.). [iv], [i]-iv, [i]-iv, [5]-262; [iv], [263]-364, [1]-132 pp. Added hand-colored wood-engraved title in each volume, fifty hand-colored wood-engraved plates by Geoffroy after Grandville, and two unsigned engraved botanical plates. The final sections are ?Botanique des dames,? which includes two botanical plates illustrating the physiology of plants, ?Horticulture des dames,? and ?Culture des fleurs." Original pink printed wrappers bound in at front and back of each volume.Contemporary full dark brown calf over boards. Covers decoratively stamped in blind. Expertly re-backed with the original spines laid down. Spines with four raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Occasional light foxing, staining, or browning, mainly marginal. An excellent example of Grandville's favorite work.?After Un autre monde the fifty-two colored engravings of Les fleurs animées are the chief example of Grandville?s effort to penetrate to the meaning of objects like an ?intellectual miner? (preface to Les étoiles, p. xi), even though only fifteen of the designs are entirely from his hand (Bouchot, p. 58). Though the images in the book are of Grandville?s time, his manner of proceeding is that of an artist of the modern movement, exploring the same subject through a sequence of slight but significant variations. Most of the plates show an elegant lady in a garden, her dress covered with an extraordinary pattern of flowers. She is sometimes accompanied by respectful creatures, animals and insects, even fish and reptiles. As the series nears its end there are more elaborate scenes of flower-ladies in groups. A little world is created, governed by its own laws, which was full of significance to Grandville and hence becomes so to the reader as well. His first biographer wrote in the preface to Les étoiles (pp. xiii-ix): ?The Fleurs animées are the very thought of Grandville; they were his favorite work, the work into the execution of which he put all that was in him of poetic and gracious originality, of dexterity of mind and observation, of that prodigious perspicacity which made him divine affinities hitherto unperceived by anyone and discover new worlds??         VIEWS Of The PACIFIC COAST. Yerba Buena Island. Engineer Post & Depot

Helios, Cosmopolitan Gallery of Photographic Art, 415 Montgomery St (n. d.), San Francisco - Albumen photograph, captioned in mss on rear: "Yerba Buena Island, looking westward from light house knoll." Seated are 3 soldiers, also in mss identified: "Col Mansfield Lt. Gregory } US Engrs. Dr. Walker. USA." Muybridge imprint his earliest after his return to San Francisco in 1867. Oblong format. Image: 2-1/16" x 3-5/16". Mount: 2-7/16" x 4" By the start of the Civil War in 1861, plans were being made to install a battery for the defense of the Bay on Yerba Buena Island, but these were delayed and it wasn't until three years after the end of the Civil War that a military post and depot were built on the island's eastern shore. The post included a fog signal and an octagonal lighthouse (constructed in 1875) that still stand today. The facility consisted of a dozen buildings, and could house approximately 150 men. The post was abandoned in 1878. [CA DOT Dist 4]."Special Order No. 252 of the Commanding General at San Francisco on December 19, 1866 directed the Commanding Officer of Alcatraz Island to send a detachment of one sergeant and ten privates under Major Mansfield [with the brevet rank of Lt. Colonel] from his command to establish a post at Yerba Buena Island. In 1868, an Army detachment of 125 men was sent to the Island. Their mission was to establish a regular artillery post and depot on the island. The post was built on the eastern side of the island at the edge of a cove. The buildings were erected in the standard army layout around a square, which was used as a parade ground. A large two-wing barracks adequate for two companies, a mess hall, laundresses quarters, commanding officer's quarters, two officers' quarters, a hospital, a guard house, a bakery, a Sutler's store, an engineer's store house, a wharf, and a boat house were erected in 1868. The post had a capacity for 150 soldiers and 4 officers." [Ruhge. Camp YBI].This image, showing the parade ground & 5 buildings [including the Commanding Officer's house], most likely taken in August 1868, after Muybridge accepted a commission to photograph military installtions in Alaska, no doubt prior to boarding the steamship Pacific for the trip north.Rare photograph putting faces to names during this short existence of Camp YBI. Sharp image. Stain to rear. A VG+ example.

        Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

London: Macmillan, 1867. 2nd Edition . Original Cloth. Very Good/No jacket - as issued. 19 x 13 Cms (7.5" x 5"). John Tenniel . PUBLISHING DETAILS: Early edition - the seventh thousand - published in 1867 by Macmillan of London. (The first printing, of just 2000 copies, was withdrawn as Tenniel was unhappy with the quality.) 192 pages, all edges gilt. Size: 19 x 13 cms (7.5" x 5"). Weight: 400g (14 ounces). CONDITION: I would rate this as very good. The original red boards, with gilt rules and Tenniel vignettes, have been retained when the book was rebacked with a matching red leather spine, with 5 bands and an ornate gilt capital 'A' (see photos). The original black free endpapers, with Burn binder's stamp, have also been retained inside newer decorated endpapers (see photos). There are neat inscriptions on the front endpaper and half-title page. The binding is tight and secure, with just some unevenness in the lie of one inner signature. The text and illustrations are particularly clean and free from foxing. Overall, this is a splendid example of a very early printing of this much sought-after title. THE BOOK: One of the most popular and most quoted books in English, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was the creation of Charles Dodgson (1832-1898), a distinguished scholar, mathematician, and author who wrote under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. Written for young readers but enjoyed equally by adults, the wonderfully fantastic tale is credited with revolutionizing children's literature and liberating it from didactic constraints. The story is deeply but gently satiric, enlivened with an imaginative plot and brilliant use of nonsense, as it relates Alice's adventures in a bizarre, topsy-turvy land underground. There she encounters a cast of strange characters and fanciful beasts, including the White Rabbit, March Hare, Mad Hatter, the sleepy Dormouse and grinning Cheshire Cat, the Mock Turtle, the dreadful Queen of Hearts, and a host of other unusual creatures.

We know the author and artist of this manuscript children's tale from notes written in the front, which we accept as true. There it is also stated that Thayer Smith was the godfather to the Hills Family of High Head Castle, Cumberland, in England -- the castle was destroyed by fire in the 1950s. One of the children for whom this story was prepared, John Waller Hills (1867-1938) was a British Liberal MP from 1906 until his death and was due to be conferred a baronetcy but died prior.

In the process, he helped secure a temporary peace between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, but his project ultimately failed (Source: Thomas Schoonover (2000) "The French in Central America"; and Cyril Allen (1957) "Felix Belly: Nicaraguan Canal Promoter"). CONDITION: The covers to both volumes are near-fine with rubbing to the leather on the spine bands and extremities. The gilt remains bright. The bindings are secure.
