PHOTOGRAPHISCHES ARCHIV.; JOURNAL DES ALLGEMEINEN DEUTSCHEN PHOTOGRAPHEN-VEREINS

Berlin: Theobald Grieben, 1867. First and mixed editions. 8vo., variable paginations, occasional illustrations from engravings. 8 volumes. Volume 1 is comprised of later printings (1861 & 1862) of the monthly issues. All others are first editions and published monthly in their corresponding year. All volumes bound in quarter leather with marbled paper over boards. Light edge wear to boards and tips; minor dampstaining to one volume, one crown chipped. Very good. "Throughout the 19th century the German speaking countries hosted more than 100 photographic societies, mostly on a local basis but aiming at a greater public, too. The first group of practitioners met regularly as early as 1840 in the studio of Carl Schuh in Vienna but there were no significant implementations until 1857 when three German photographers called for the foundation of a Society of German Photographers (Allgemeiner Deutscher Photographen-Verein) following French and English examples. Formally founded by more than 40 participants the society seemed to flourish within the next years, including the initiation of its own journal, Photographisches Archiv, edited by the founding fathers Juius Schnauss and Eduard Liesegang. But in 1863 the society ceased to exist and was basically replaced by the freshly inaugurated Berlin Society for Photography ( Photographischer Verein zu Berlin) which was founded by Hermann Wilhelm Vogel." Rollf Sachsse in the Encyclopedia of 19th Century Photography. This journal, founded in 1860, changed its formal name in 1861 to PHOTOGRAPHISCHES ARCHIV: MONATLICHE BERICHTE ÃœBER DEN FORTSCHRITT DER PHOTOGRAPHIE, and continued to publish monthly until 1897. Largely comprised of articles and formulas by members, this journal did have an international scope and printed articles of the latest advancements from American, English and other European sources. Text in German. Issued monthly, except in 1864, when it was issued twice monthly. Illustrated throughout with engravings, charts, and formulae.

Paris, printed by C. Blageart, 1675. 8vo. Modern light brown half cloth, with original paper wrappers mounted on sides.

      - Brunet, Suppl. I, col. 775; Cat. la bibliothèque de M.H. de Lassize (1867), no. 1363 (this copy); Thomas, Swimming, p. 74; WorldCat (3 copies). Author's annotated copy of the extremely rare first and only edition of Lanquer's treatise on his newly-invented life belt, known in early dictionaries as a "Lanquerre" and described on the title-page as a "machine that fits in a pocket and allows travelling on rivers and seas without any danger to life, and without wetting weapons and clothes". Brunet describes it as "Pièce curieuse et d'une grande rareté" and mentions a copy withdrawn from the De Lassize auction. That is clearly the present copy, for the auction catalogue notes it is annotated by the author, quoting a manuscript comment on page 22: "Laquelle machine depuis que j'ai mon privilége, j'ai encore tellement perfectionnée que c'est à présent un prodige. [etc]". The treatise is also mentioned in Thevenot’s classic swimming manual L'art de nager. With bookplate. Some minor wear in the corners, otherwise in very good condition.

King Gobble's (Gobbles) Feast, Spoilt Piggy Wiggy

McLoughlin Bros., Manufacturers, 1867. 34 Unnumbered pages including title. 16 Wonderful full-page colour illustrations. 7.5" x 6". Front board illustrated in gold, black and blue. Presents the tales of how King Gobble was ultimately served for dinner, and how Piggy Wiggy pulled over the table. Unmarked. Above-average wear and general soiling. Three leaves loose but present. Binding quite tender. Front hinge starting, back hinge open. Possibly missing one or more leaves from back as Piggy Wiggy's story ends with him crushing all flowers in the garden whereas the troublesome piglet also seemed destined to be cooked!       F. C. W. Vogel, Leipzig 1867 - In-8 relié, VIII-132pp. + 7 Tafeln (7 pl.) in fine. Christoph Theodor Aeby (25 February 1835 - 7 July 1885) was a Swiss anatomist and anthropologist, born in Phalsbourg, Lorraine, France. He died in Bilin, Bohemia at the age of 50. He studied medicine at Basel and Göttingen. In 1863 he was named a professor of anatomy at the University of Bern (1866/67, academic rector), and in 1884 at the University of Prague as successor to Carl Toldt. He is best known for his contributions to anthropology, which include a new and valuable craniometric method. He performed research of microcephaly, publishing Beiträge zur Kenntniss der Mikrocephalie (1874) as a result.[3] He also demonstrated the influence of atmospheric pressure on the several joints of the human body, and conducted significant studies involving the upper respiratory tract, An enthusiastic mountain climber, he was co-author of Das Hochgebirge von Grindelwald (The high mountains of Grindelwald, 1865).         Kumanaki kage [trans.: Shadows Everywhere or Shadows without Shade]

      - 82 black & white silhouette ports. on pale blue backgrounds & numerous finely color-printed vignettes & "poem-strips." 48 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. decorated wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. [Japan]: 1867. First edition of this finely color-printed book which contains a memorable double-page frontispiece by Zeshin (1807-91), the leading Shijo-style painter of the Meiji period, one of the greatest of lacquer artists of his time, and a prominent contributor of designs for books. "In the Meiji period [and before], the presence of a print designed by Zeshin invariably gave a certain cachet to any book of verse or landscapes, and he was frequently enlisted by astute publishers to provide one or two telling designs for compilations of mixed authorship? In 1867, he helped to launch a book of shadow portraits or silhouettes, by designing a telling frontispiece. Kuma-naki Kage, 'Shadows Everywhere,' consists of a series of the silhouettes (not thought to have been drawn by Zeshin), and Zeshin introduces such a portrait, mounted as a kakemono, into the elegant room he has pictured, with a balcony overlooking a lake."-Hillier, The Art of the Japanese Book, pp. 964 & 915-16. As noted above, Zeshin has contributed the beautiful double-page color-printed frontispiece (and perhaps a few more vignettes). The remainder of the silhouettes, vignettes, and "poem-strips" has been executed by Yoshiiku Ochiai (or Yoshiiku Utagawa) (1833-1904), one of the leading artists of the Utagawa school. Each of the black & white silhouettes depicts members of a poetry society and the "poem strips" offers a selection of their verse and a brief biographical account. The production of this book was complex, and displays Japanese woodcut color-printing at its finest. Many of the leaves have portions with blind-embossing (for instance, the fore-edges of books have been blind-embossed to give the suggestion of edges of leaves). A number of the text pages have also been blind-embossed with a cherry-blossom motif. In fine and fresh condition. Accompanied by the original decorated sleeve, a very rare survival.         1867 Commonplace Scrap Album with Drawings, Jokes, and Autographs

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A beautiful Victorian-era scrapbook containing original pencil, pen and ink, and watercolor drawings, humorous autograph poems, riddles and jokes, pasted-in pictures and poems, and autograph signatures. Dated 1867 and with the ownership signature of its compiler, Elizabeth Tatham, on the first page. Elizabeth Tatham (b. 1849) was the daughter of George Tatham of Leeds, Yorkshire, a leather manufacturer and the Mayor of Leeds from 1879 to 1882. The very skilfully-executed drawings are initialed by Elizabeth Tatham and by another person with the initials G.T., possibly her father or a sibling. Highlights of the drawings include ink and watercolor hunting scenes, courting scenes, and society scenes with humorous captions. A particularly striking page displays a poem titled "Flirts in Hades," surrounded by appliquéd male and female faces with butterfly wings. Also included is a page of clipped signatures from Liberal politicians and personalities, including W. E. Gladstone, Lord Amberley (John Russell, Viscount Amberley), Sir Andrew Fairbairn, Sir Thomas Bazley, Baronet Sir H. J. Ingilby, the Dean of Carlisle (Francis Close), and many others, as well as several further pages of autographs and one page of clipped crests. Red leather and gold boards, front board detached, with spine heavily worn, but otherwise intact. Marbled endpapers. Internally overall in very good to fine condition, with the excellent drawings very well preserved. 9.5 x 11.5 inches (23.5 x 29 cm).<br>In England, the tradition of keeping a commonplace book began in the 15th and 16th centuries; the books would be filled with recipes, quotations, poems, useful information, proverbs or prayers. Friendship albums, usually kept by young women, were a place for friends to enter their names, quotations, or drawings at the owner's request. By the 19th century, scrapbooking was firmly established as a pastime for children and young women, and the widely available cheap printed materials, or "scraps," for pasting in became a large component of many scrapbooks.

Köln, 1. XII. 1867. - 1 S. 8vo. An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten: "Für Uebersendung des Vogelsang'schen Buches meinen besten Dank. Dasselbe will studirt sein, ehe man davon spricht. - Etwas angestaubt.

        War is a hard master."

Saint Louis, Missouri 1867 - Autograph Letter Signed, to his foster brother and former General Thomas Ewing Jr. Saint Louis, Missouri, June 30, 1867, 4 pp., quarto. The Commander of the Department of the Missouri and the future Commanding General of the U.S. Army is not about to show favoritism to family when it comes to duty. He has some stern advice for his younger foster brother, Charley, delivered through his older brother. Complete TranscriptSaint Louis Mo, June 30, 1867Dear Tom, I have your letter of June 9th which came when I was up on the Platte, and since my return I have been so busy getting some papers ready for the coming session of Congress that I have had no time for private letters till today Sunday, and at home. I am delighted to hear that both Hugh and Charley have mustered off altogether. I never knew two persons who were less fitted to drink. If either could see himself, as I have seen them they would never again be tempted to put themselves in John Barleycorn's grasp. It seems to me that Hugh's place was cut out for him and I hope he may long retain it. As to Charley I fear both he and you have a radically wrong idea. He is a Captain of a company & should be with his men, or should make a vacancy now. He has no right to trifle with the lives of men. He does the Army a great wrong by making it a mere personal convenience. Were I in Chief command and he or any body else would prolong a leave of absence and in position and when he had exhausted every possible device, then concluded to serve another year to prepare to resign, I would announce his Resignation accepted, and declare a vacancy, & fill it. I know that others think and act on a different hypothesis, but if an officer will not subordinate himself to the duties of his station he can make no claim to being a real officer. Now if Charley intends to make the army a convenience, then he should resign at once, and begin his new career. Out on the Plains we are embarrassed beyond all measure by such cases, and I think soon, we must adopt a Rule as was done in the War. Declare all absentees discharged & fill the list with officers "present for duty." It would result in personal hardship but war is a hard master. It would not spare me, and I don t see why I should not claim its Rules. I must start up again for the Kansas Frontier & leave Ellen & family to get to Madison with the help of one of my aids or an orderly. I will take Tom & Minnie to Fort Harker & start July 4. Ellen will leave about the 8th July. I learn by a letter from Ellen Cox that you & family will spend the summer in Long Island. I like the fresh spring water of Lake Wenona better for bathing boating & fishing than the [Rising?] Atlantic, with its sand beach and surf but "chacun à son goût." ["Each to one's own taste"] I will write your father today also but I wish you will get this away from him. All are well with us ever your affectionately WT ShermanHistorical BackgroundAppointed Commander of the Department of the Missouri just a few months after war's end, Sherman's main concern was protecting the workers and overseeing the progress of the first Transcontinental Railroad. Though the General often talked tough regarding Indian removal, negotiating was more effective than warfare, especially considering that limited troops had to cover vast areas of the Great Plains. In 1867, the U.S. Army was in the process of negotiating peace with the Plains Indians. As Sherman alludes, his younger foster brother and others embarrassed themselves and abused their positions and the Army by taking excessive leave and using their positions as mere conveniences. Less than a month later, Congress created the Indian Peace Commission and negotiated three treaties that collectively are known as the Medicine Lodge Treaty, signed between October 21 and 28, 1867.William T. Sherman (1820-1891), a West Point graduate and Mexican War veteran, served as a corps commander under General Grant in succe. (See website for full description)

Les portraits dessinés de J.-A.-D. Ingres

Very rare first edition printed in hundred copies.Together hundred lithographs executed in pencil depicting politicians and intellectuals of the nineteenth century. The majority of boards are dated and signed. These reproductions have mostly been executed after works owned by private collectors. Recognized specialist Ingres, Lapauze Henry (1867-1925) notes in this respect in the introduction,"So those wonderful portraits, most of which are jealously guarded as family monuments, or are the pride of private collections, become a national treasure for all to contemplate." The main objective is to enable Lapauze works by Ingres to be better known to the general public at a time when the culture is raised to the status of national heritage by the Third Republic. It is in this sense that the work of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) is reinvested in the early twentieth century: the hundred portraits provide a visual gallery of the entourage of Dominique Ingres; after portrait personalities that are known or not readers Lapauze considers this matter to the extent of the painter's genius enough to "the master of glory" and "enjoyment of people of taste." Ingres is erected and engineering of French painting of the nineteenth century.Rare copy of first edition compiling drawn portraits of Ingres. Chez J.-E.         Kumanaki kage [trans.: Shadows Everywhere or Shadows without Shade]

82 black & white silhouette ports. on pale blue backgrounds & numerous finely color-printed vignettes & "poem-strips." 48 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. decorated wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. "In the Meiji period [and before], the presence of a print designed by Zeshin invariably gave a certain cachet to any book of verse or landscapes, and he was frequently enlisted by astute publishers to provide one or two telling designs for compilations of mixed authorship&hellip; In 1867, he helped to launch a book of shadow portraits or silhouettes, by designing a telling frontispiece.
