      - Adams A567; Cat. de la Bibl. de . N. Yemeniz, Paris, 1867, lot 969 (this copy); Isaac 12913; Gaselee, Early printed books in Corpus Christi Cambridge, 166; Edit 16, CNCE 822. An early and attractive edition of a key astrological work. The present 12th-century Latin translation by John of Seville of his "al-Madkhal al-kabir ilá 'ilm ahkam al-nujum" (Great introduction to the science of astrology) was first published at Augsburg in 1489. Small early ink stamp on title-page, early manuscript index at end, written on endleaves from the first binding; some early marginalia and underlinings in two different early hands. From the library of Nicolas Yemeniz (1783-1871), with pencilled lot number 969, and with the large armorial bookplate of William Stirling-Maxwell (1818-1878). Binding slightly dirty, occasional insignificant mark internally; overall a very good copy.

The First Step. A manual for learning the English language]

Arngold Sankt Peterburg 1867 - Small square 8vo (14.5 × 11.9 cm), pp. 104, [2]; old waterstains in upper gutter and lower corner. Original printed boards; a little marked, lower cover scraped, with loss of a few words. First edition, rare. 'Among British immigrants to Russia the story of James Heard [1798–1875] is one of the most unusual. Aged 18, with minimal knowledge of Russian and few weeks' training as a teacher, he travelled along in 1817 to the Province of Gomel, not knowing quite what he would find there. Within a very few years he had proved himself as a linguist and innovative educator, whose achievements in establishing schools for the poor had become widely known in Russia. 'He settled in St. Petersburg, where he worked tirelessly to promote the method of mutual instruction developed by Andrew Bell and Joseph Lancaster. He wrote the first ever good Russian grammar book for English-speaking learners [A Practical Grammar of the Russian Language, St Petersburg, 1827]. He published an excellent translation of Goldsmith's Vicar of Wakefield [1846; second ed. 1872] and an English novel [The Life and Times of Nathalia Borissovna, Princess Dolgorukov, London, 1857], as well as numerous handbooks for learners of French, English and Russian' (James Muckle, James Arthur Heard and the Education of the Poor in Russia, 2013). This book offers the beginners a simple guide to pronunciation of English monosyllabic words with their parallel Russian translation. Not found in COPAC or WorldCat. Muckle, p. 165. The Last Chronicle of Barset is the sixth and final novel in the Chronicles of Barsetshire (1855-1867), a series of novels featuring the clergymen of the fictional English county of Barsetshire that is considered to collectively be Trollope's finest work. Also advertises upcoming performances of the Merchant of Venice and Richard III. A fine collection of scarce ephemera relating to America's most celebrated Shakespearean actor, and brother of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth. One of three illigitimate sons of the actor John Brutus Booth, Edwin Booth began performing at a young age next to his father. His success was marred by association with his brother, but his career and influence endured until his death in 1893. He ran his own innovative theatre from 1869 to 1874 in New York, succumbing to bankruptcy during the financial panic of the previous year. He afterwards toured the world and regained his fortune. He is best remembered for his record-setting run as Hamlet: to quote William Winter's contemporary review of him in Harper's 1881, it was "the part which has been the chief means of his development, his fortune, his fame, and the genuine, permanent and loving esteem in which he is held by the great body of his countrymen." Booth had first played Hamlet in New York, at Burton's in 1857. Beginning November 16, 1864, and ending March 24, 1865, he played the part at the Winter Garden, for 100 nights, at that time the longest run any Shakespearian play had ever had in America.

La postérité ne retint de lui que les controverses amères qui l'opposèrent à Pasteur : "for many years [he] was a thorn in the flesh of Pasteur and made it habit to oppose everything he said, did or wrote" (Bulloch). "It is not surprise... that Béchamp's theory was upheld or attacked by Catholics, evolutionists, and materialists. But being at the center of too many controversial issues is not always the best way to pursue a successful career, especially if one is confined to provincial teaching positions ; and Béchamp ended his life in nearly complete isolation. He died ignore by most and eulogized as a scientific martyr by few" (DSB). DSB XV, p. 11-12. Bulloch, The History of Bacteriology, p. 185 et suiv

Spectacular Mary Todd Lincoln signed embossed leather portfolio

n.p., June 14, 1867. 9.75" x 7.25". "A deep chocolate brown leather correspondence folder signed and inscribed by Mary Todd Lincoln to her Henry Fowler as ""Presented to Henry S. Fowler by his friend / Mrs A. Lincoln/ Chicago / June 14th 1867."" Embossed in a diamond grid with gilt ruling. Ornate polished steel escutcheon with what appears to be Florentine gilt accents. 9.75"" x 7.25"". Interior with damask accordion pockets, and note paper. Gilt tilts to the pockets written in French. Beautiful condition with just a slight bit of rubbing and staining to pocket interior.A very personal artifact of Mary Todd Lincoln, who spoke fluent French, and collected all things French. This piece was gifted shortly after her moving out of The White House when she had relocated to Chicago and there began her effort to settle her husband's estate (she was deeply traumatized by her husband's murder, and did not move out of the White House until May 23, 1865). She had gifted the folder in 1867 to Henry L Fowler who had been a childhood playmate of her son Tad Lincoln. Tad was quite rambunctious as a child in the White House, having been known to play pranks around the Executive Mansion. In the White House Tad sprayed dignitaries with the fire hose, broke mirrors, locked doors, interrupted Cabinet meetings, constructed wagons and sleds out of chairs, set up a food shop in the lobby, rang the call bells, and drilled the servants, as if they were soldiers. Abraham generally laughed at his sons' tricks, and any kind of discipline was generally lacking. By 1868, she wished to further Tad's schooling and education and had moved to Germany to enroll Tad into a boarding school. They remained there for about 3 years, and then in 1871 decided to return to the States. During the ocean voyage home, at the young age of 18, Tad Lincoln fell ill. He never fully recovered from his illness and died several months later most likely of Tuberculosis. This is a part of a group of Mary Todd Lincoln items that descended in the family of a Mrs. Fowler of Chicago, a neighbor and friend of Mary Todd (with Henry being their son). A copy of a partial 20th century inventory and Letter of Provenance accompanies the lot."

The book contains nine stories based on his three-year service (1860-63) on several Russian naval ships in South-East Asia, Russian Far East and North Pacific (corvette «Kalevala», transport ship «Yaponets», clipper «Gaidamak», and others). Some stories were first published in the Morskoy Sbornik and other St. Petersburg magazines in 1861-1864; they describe Staniukovich's service on board corvette «Kalevala» in October 1860-August 1861: From Brest to Madeira, Madeira and Cape Verde, Life [on board] in the tropics (including crossing the Equator in the Atlantic Ocean); In the Indian Ocean (from Cape of Good Hope via Sunda Strait to Batavia); In the Chinese Ports (Hong Kong and Canton); In Cochinchina (a month and a half stay in Saigon); Abolishment of Corporal Punishments; Kuzka's love (a short story); Storm (a sketch). Very interesting are the descriptions of «Kalevala's» stay in Hong Kong and Canton, and an extensive essay on Cochinchina (Vietnam) which gives an eye-witness account of the final stage of French conquest of the region in 1862. «The son of an admiral, Staniukovich was born into a family with a long naval tradition. He studied at the Naval Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg from 1857 to 1860. In 1860 he completed the voyage described in his first book of sketches, From a Voyage Around the World (1867). Staniukovich retired from the navy in 1864 with the rank of lieutenant and taught school in a remote village of Vladimir Province in 1865 and 1866. In 1872 he began contributing to the journal Delo (i.e. Affairs). He was a member of the journal's editorial board from 1881 to 1884 and then its publisher. In 1884, Staniukovich was arrested for his association with revolutionary Narodnik (i.e. Populist) émigrés; after a year of imprisonment he was exiled to Tomsk for three years. Staniukovich's novellas and short stories about seafaring life, written between 1886 and 1903, have remained very popular. They display the best features of Staniukovich's talent: realism, a democratic spirit, and advocacy of civic and personal courage and of inner steadfastness. Staniukovich's sea stories were awarded the Pushkin Prize (1901). They have been translated into many foreign languages?» (The Great Soviet Encyclopedia, 3rd Edition. English translation).

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1867 - 1867 Original Wisden in Very Good Condition

1867. As far as I am aware, this is the first 1867 in original covers to be offered on this site. The book itself is in excellent condition. The front and rear wrappers are very slightly darkened and with the odd mark as can be seen from the photographs. The wrappers are entirely complete without any chips or loss. There is a small closed tear to the front wrapper which has not resulted in any loss at all. Internally, the book is in fabulous condition for it's age. The pages are clean, original and unmarked. The book has had no restoration whatsoever. It is very rare to find a book of this age in entirely original condition with it's original wrappers. A super copy. We also have fabulous copies for 1864 and 1868 in original wrappers which we hope to list shortly.

        [HAWAII IN 1850s] Ocherki Perom i Karandashom iz Krugosvetnogo Plavaniya v 1857, 1858, 1859 i 1860 godakh [i.e. Sketches in Pen and Pencil from the Circumnavigation in 1857, 1858, 1859 and 1860

St. Petersburg: M.O. Wolf, 1867. 2nd corrected ed. [6], 592 pp. 24,5x18 cm. With a lithographed title page and twenty-three tinted lithographed plates (complete). Period style gilt tooled half leather. Half title with a minor repair of blank lower corner, a few minor stains of blank foreedge, otherwise a very good copy. Rare Russian imprint with only seven paper copies found in Worldcat. Early interesting Russian travel account of a voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Hawaii, Tahiti, Moorea and other places written by a doctor of naval clipper 'Plastun', which went on a circumnavigation in 1857-1860. Plastun was a part of a group of Russian propeller driven naval ships which were sent to visit the newly acquired Russian territories in the Far East (annexed with the signing of the Russian-Chinese Treaty of Aigun in 1858) and to establish Russian presence in Chinese and Japanese ports. On board the 'Plastun' Vysheslavtsev called at Atlantic Islands (Cape Verde, Ascension Island and others), rounded Cape of Good Hope, visited Singapore, Hong Kong, several bays of the new Russian Amur region, Vladivostok and Nikolayevsk; spent almost a year in Japan, and returned to Kronstadt via Hawaii, Tahiti, Strait of Magellan, Buenos Ayres and Rio de Janeiro. Separate chapters of the future book - essays about Cape of Good Hope, Atlantic Ocean, Hong Kong, Edo and others - were printed in the Russky Vestnik magazine in 1858-1860, under the general title Letters from clipper Plastun. In 1862 the complete travel account was published by the Russian Naval Ministry which was in charge of publication of a number of important Russian expedition accounts in the 1800-1840s (voyages by Sarychev, Krusenstern and Lisyansky, Golovnin, Kotsebue, Luetke, Bellingshausen, Wrangel, and others). Vysheslavtsev's book was meant to continue the tradition of publication of Russian expedition accounts, especially because he not only wrote the text of the travel account, but also created a series of vivid sketches depicting landscapes and native people of the exotic destinations. The original sketches were redrawn to be printed as lithographs in the renowned Saint Petersburg lithograph printing house of Paul Petit; the artists in charge were the students of the Imperial Academy of Arts, including young Ivan Shishkin and Vasily Vereshchagin - future famous Russian artists. Our second edition of the book was issued five years later by a major commercial St. Petersburg publisher Mauritius Wolf, this publication included twenty-three lithographed plates (the same amount as in the Russian State Library copy) and is complete, although the title page calls for twenty-seven, like in the first edition. The completeness is confirmed by Forbes 2773. Among the illustrations are views of the Ascension Island, Whampoa, Hakodate, several bays in the Russian Far East, Magellan Strait, embankment in Rio de Janeiro; portraits of the natives from the Cape of Good Hope, Singapore, Gilyaks from the Amur Region, Japanese in Edo and Hakodate, and others. The 'Pacific' plates include views of Oahu Island, Pali (Oahu), two group portraits of Tahitian girls and the «kanakas» (meant as native people of the Pacific islands), Fautaua waterfall (Tahiti), portrait of a New Caledonian on Tahiti, and three different views of the Papetoai Bay (Moorea). Chapter 7 of the account titled «The Pacific» contains a captivating description of the visit to Honolulu: city description, Diamond Hill, local society, funerals of a king's nephew, local police, public prosecution, Waikiki village, Nuuanu Pali lookout, hula hula dance, personality of Kamehameha IV who received the officers of the Russian squadron in his palace; 'Tahitian' part talks about Papeete and environs, history of discovery and colonisation of the island, king Pomare I, bread fruit trees, Papeuriri, local school, Fautaua waterfall, Moorea, introduction to the queen Pomare IV, and others. «Vysheslavitsev was both observant and adept at recording his impressions.., a second edition was published in 1867; see No. 2773. Both editions are rare» (Forbes 2514). Overall a very interesting early Russian account of South-East Asia and the Pacific Islands including Hawaii.

PHOTOGRAPHISCHES ARCHIV.; JOURNAL DES ALLGEMEINEN DEUTSCHEN PHOTOGRAPHEN-VEREINS

Berlin: Theobald Grieben, 1867. First and mixed editions. 8vo., variable paginations, occasional illustrations from engravings. 8 volumes. Volume 1 is comprised of later printings (1861 & 1862) of the monthly issues. All others are first editions and published monthly in their corresponding year. All volumes bound in quarter leather with marbled paper over boards. Light edge wear to boards and tips; minor dampstaining to one volume, one crown chipped. Very good. "Throughout the 19th century the German speaking countries hosted more than 100 photographic societies, mostly on a local basis but aiming at a greater public, too. The first group of practitioners met regularly as early as 1840 in the studio of Carl Schuh in Vienna but there were no significant implementations until 1857 when three German photographers called for the foundation of a Society of German Photographers (Allgemeiner Deutscher Photographen-Verein) following French and English examples. Formally founded by more than 40 participants the society seemed to flourish within the next years, including the initiation of its own journal, Photographisches Archiv, edited by the founding fathers Juius Schnauss and Eduard Liesegang. But in 1863 the society ceased to exist and was basically replaced by the freshly inaugurated Berlin Society for Photography ( Photographischer Verein zu Berlin) which was founded by Hermann Wilhelm Vogel." Rollf Sachsse in the Encyclopedia of 19th Century Photography. This journal, founded in 1860, changed its formal name in 1861 to PHOTOGRAPHISCHES ARCHIV: MONATLICHE BERICHTE ÃœBER DEN FORTSCHRITT DER PHOTOGRAPHIE, and continued to publish monthly until 1897. Largely comprised of articles and formulas by members, this journal did have an international scope and printed articles of the latest advancements from American, English and other European sources. Text in German. Issued monthly, except in 1864, when it was issued twice monthly. Illustrated throughout with engravings, charts, and formulae.

Paris, printed by C. Blageart, 1675. 8vo. Modern light brown half cloth, with original paper wrappers mounted on sides.

      - Brunet, Suppl. I, col. 775; Cat. la bibliothèque de M.H. de Lassize (1867), no. 1363 (this copy); Thomas, Swimming, p. 74; WorldCat (3 copies). Author's annotated copy of the extremely rare first and only edition of Lanquer's treatise on his newly-invented life belt, known in early dictionaries as a "Lanquerre" and described on the title-page as a "machine that fits in a pocket and allows travelling on rivers and seas without any danger to life, and without wetting weapons and clothes". Brunet describes it as "Pièce curieuse et d'une grande rareté" and mentions a copy withdrawn from the De Lassize auction. That is clearly the present copy, for the auction catalogue notes it is annotated by the author, quoting a manuscript comment on page 22: "Laquelle machine depuis que j'ai mon privilége, j'ai encore tellement perfectionnée que c'est à présent un prodige. [etc]". The treatise is also mentioned in Thevenot’s classic swimming manual L'art de nager. With bookplate. Some minor wear in the corners, otherwise in very good condition.

King Gobble's (Gobbles) Feast, Spoilt Piggy Wiggy

McLoughlin Bros., Manufacturers, 1867. 34 Unnumbered pages including title. 16 Wonderful full-page colour illustrations. 7.5" x 6". Front board illustrated in gold, black and blue. Presents the tales of how King Gobble was ultimately served for dinner, and how Piggy Wiggy pulled over the table. Unmarked. Above-average wear and general soiling. Three leaves loose but present. Binding quite tender. Front hinge starting, back hinge open. Possibly missing one or more leaves from back as Piggy Wiggy's story ends with him crushing all flowers in the garden whereas the troublesome piglet also seemed destined to be cooked! Our inspection suggests this title may have been issued without a front free endpaper. No indication of any earlier printings.
