First Print of Carl Binz first publication on Quinine was "Ueber die Wirkung antiseptischer Stoffe auf Infusorien von Pflanzenjauche". This collection contains 7 other reports by Binz and his student Carl Scharrenbroich about quinine. Carl Binz (1832-1913) was Professor of Pharmacology at Bonn. "His most important work was perhaps the demonstration that quinine in low concentrations kills numerous micro-organisms." Garrison & Morton No. 1880 (Vorlesungen über Pharmakologie (1884-86).Enthalten in dieser Sammlung sind folgende Beiträge zumThema:1.: Ueber die Wirkung antiseptischer Stoffe auf Infusorien von Planzenjauche (Cbl. med. Wiss V/20 4.Mai 1867, pp.305-310). 2.: Ueber das Chinin als Antiphlogisticum. Vorläufige Mittheilung von Cand. med. Scharrenbroich (Cbl. med. Wiss V/52 30. Armee-Corps, 2 pp.). Berlin, Gedruckt bei Julius Sittenfeld, 1871, 21, (1) pp. 7.: Quinine and the colourless blood-corpuscle (Lond., Practitioner IX (1872, pp.141-147), 7, (1) pp. 8.: Das Chinin. Nach den neuern pharmakologischen Arbeiten. (1875. - (2 Bl.), 76 pp.)."One of my most able students later examined several other substances with regard to the same quality, viz. conia, veratria, camphor, bichloride of mercury, arsenite of potassium, aconitine, digitaline, coffeine, sulphate of atropia, acetate of lead, kreosot, and oil of turpentine. He found that conia alone was equally poisonous to the white cells as quinine, but all other substances were inferior to it. .."

Virch. Arch. path. Anat., 41+55. - Berlin, Verlag von Georg Reimer, 1867, 8, VI, 591, (1) pp., 13 Tafeln 1872, 8, VI, 538 pp., 20 Tafeln 2 Halbleinenbände. Frist Edition! Heinrich Wilhelm Gottfried von Waldeyer (1836-1921) "confirmed the work of Thiersch on the epithelial origin of cancer, disproving Virchow's theory. So great was the authority of the latter that it was not until the appearance of the second of the above papers that Virchow's error was finally recognized"."Die bedeutendste Leistung Waldeyers als Pathologe aber ist seine in 2 Teilen erschienene Arbeit zur Histogenese der Karzinome 1867 und 1872. " Georg Dhom, Gesch. Histopath., p.325

        White-Jacket; or The World in a Man-of-War

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1867. Very Good. Reprint edition, unrecorded variant conforming to BAL second printing in third cloth binding, but with no date on the title page and no ads in the back (according to Richard Colles Johnson in The Book Collector 1982 this is an 1867 reprint edition, though no copies of such an edition have yet to be noted in OCLC). Contemporary pencil owner name (W.B. Wait), spinal extremities and small portions of the gutters and cloth perished, else a tight, very good copy. A somewhat underappreciated novel written shortly before Moby-Dick. Though it contains some of Melville's best black humor (particularly the hilarious Surgeon of the Fleet episode), the book is mostly noted for its contribution to the abolition of flogging in the U.S. Navy.         Recherches sur la prothese des membres.

Paris, P. Asselin, Successur de Béchet Jeune et Labe, 1867, 8, (4), 107, (1) pp., 8 Holzschitte, 2 lith. Brief Facsimile, feiner Halbleinenband. Erste Auflage! J.P. Kostuik (Hrsg.), Amputationschirurgie und Rehabilitation: Erfahrungen der Toronto-Gruppe (1985), p.11"Rare first edition of this detailed and well illustrated guide to artificial limbs, written by Amédée Comte de Beaufort. A subject of great interest for many years, Beaufort describes a number of articulated devices of his own invention for amputations of both upper and lower limbs. Having been appointed as "d'inspecteur general adjoint des établissements de bienfaisance" in 1847 his motivation in particular was to help the less fortunate in society, with an emphasis on designing simple, practical and inexpensive prostheses, that would be more widely available. A further catalyst for his work was die Crimean and Italian campaigns of die 1860s which had left a vast number of amputees. The present work highlights a number of inventions, including his lightweight articulated wooden leg prosthesis, composed of two splints articulated at knee level, as well as his articulated arm and hand, which was controlled by die amputee through a shoulder harness. The Controlling power started with a strap buttoned into die front button of die trousers, passed through a loop to the opposite axilla, over to the amputated side to a pulley at the elbow, and then to the artificial hand. He also invented a simple hand with a movable thump and a more complicated one in which repeated pulls on die same cord opened and closed the fingers. As the present work reveals, Beaufort had presented his inventions for peer review, and had received the considerable praise and support of both Broca and Larrey, and which led to Army authorities adopting his models for their staff in 1864. The Assistance Publique also adopted both his "arm with a useful hand" and his articulated clamp hook for general use in civilian hospitals, a viable and much cheaper solution to alternative more realistic and expensive models."         Visible Speech: The Science of Universal Alphabetics; or Self-Interpreting Physiological Letters, for the Writing of All Languages in One Alphabet. Illustrated by Tables, Diagrams, and Examples

Simpkin, Marshall & Co, London 1867 - Inaugural edition, 1867, hardcover with original cloth boards and rebound new spine, small quarto, 126pp. + 16 plates, illustrated in b&w. Book VG with bright gilt letters to new spine, edgewear that tears cloth, rubbing, binding tight with new endpapers, endpapers on both ends reinforced with paper strips in gutters, inner gutters cracked, text toned throughout and shows foxing to edges of pages, otherwise unmarked. No DJ. In 1867, Alexander Melville Bell published the book Visible Speech: The Science of Universal Alphabetics. This book contains information about the system of symbols he created that, when used to write words, indicated pronunciation so accurately, that it could even reflect regional accents. A person reading a piece of text handwritten in Melville Bell's system of characters could accurately reproduce a sentence the way it would be spoken by someone with a foreign or regional accent. In his demonstrations, Melville Bell employed his son, Alexander Graham Bell to read from the visible speech transcript of the volunteer's spoken words and would astound the audience by saying it back exactly as the volunteer had spoken it.

Plusieurs remarques dans cet opuscule mettent en lumière l'opposition entre deux écoles, celles des internes de Charcot à la Salpêtrière et celle de Jean Laborde de l'hôpital de Bicêtre : "Laborde saw the cause of cerebral softening in the primary dilation of brain capillaries, but the for the house officers [...] cerebral softening was primarily caused by vascular occulusion." Following Charcot, pp. 12-13.

        Lock of hair.

No place or date. - A blond strand of hair, tied into a circular locket with pink string, mounted on a certificate of authenticity dated 1867. Matted. 8vo. The locket's provenance is accounted for by the included certificates of authenticity and confirmation of sale for nearly its entire first century: first, in the possession of the Weimar librarian and counsellor Theodor Kräuter (1790-1856), since 1805 a scribe at the Ducal Library and Goethe's private secretary from 1811 onwards; by descent to his nephew, the Weimar lawyer and writer Robert Keil (1826-96), who vouches for its authenticity on his drystamped, sealed stationery: "These are hairs of Schiller which belonged to the estate of the late librarian and counsellor Dr. Theodor Kräuter here in Weimar, former private secretary to Goethe. This is confirmed by Kräuter's nephew, Dr. Robert Keil, lawyer. Weimar, 20 April 1867". This certificate was probably occasioned by the relic's transfer to the Weimar Schillerhaus, the custodian of which was a distant relative of Keil's, the Weimar art dealer Eduard Lobe. But nine months later, Lobe sold the lock to the historically-minded Chicago lawyer and entrepreneur, Thomas Barbour Bryan (1828-1906): "This lock of Schiller's I have on this day sold to Mr. T. B. Bryan, and herewith confirm its authenticity. Weimar, 23 January 1868". Bryan is remembered as a sponsor of and Commissioner-At-Large for Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. As early as 1860 he had exhibited G. P. A. Healy's portrait of Abraham Lincoln at his "Bryan Hall" gallery; in 1864 he had a lithographic facsimile of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation prepared which he sent the President for examination. - Acquired from an Austrian noble collection.

Philadelphia. 1867. - 4pp. printed in red and blue; [1]p. Quarto. First piece with old folds. Sheets separated at central fold, some separation at horizontal fold on each sheet. Minor soiling. Good. Second piece also with old folds and separation at lower portion of sheet. Some light chipping and wear with minor losses. About good. Souvenir from a railroad excursion from Philadelphia to Fort Harker, Kansas, which set out on May 31st and reached Fort Harker on June 6th and returned to Philadelphia on the 14th. The goal was to impress potential major customers and possible investors with the progress of the railroad toward the Rockies. The piece prints the proceedings of their meeting, held at Fort Harker, in which they extol the virtues and comforts of their travel accommodations and the helpfulness of everyone involved. The final page contains a list of the excursionists, noting which are from the East and which joined the party at St Louis and points West. There are nearly 150 names on the list, with travelers hailing from Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, West Virginia, Indiana, Detroit, New Orleans, and England, among others. The second piece records similar text, being the minutes of a meeting held by the excursionists on June 7th at Fort Harker. The Union Pacific Eastern Division ran from Kansas City, Kansas through to Colorado Territory, where it joined up with the Union Pacific's main line by 1870. The railroad operated as the Kansas Pacific from 1869 to 1880.
