Visible Speech: The Science of Universal Alphabetics; or Self-Interpreting Physiological Letters, for the Writing of All Languages in One Alphabet. Illustrated by Tables, Diagrams, and Examples

Simpkin, Marshall & Co, London 1867 - Inaugural edition, 1867, hardcover with original cloth boards and rebound new spine, small quarto, 126pp. + 16 plates, illustrated in b&w. Book VG with bright gilt letters to new spine, edgewear that tears cloth, rubbing, binding tight with new endpapers, endpapers on both ends reinforced with paper strips in gutters, inner gutters cracked, text toned throughout and shows foxing to edges of pages, otherwise unmarked. No DJ. In 1867, Alexander Melville Bell published the book Visible Speech: The Science of Universal Alphabetics. This book contains information about the system of symbols he created that, when used to write words, indicated pronunciation so accurately, that it could even reflect regional accents. A person reading a piece of text handwritten in Melville Bell's system of characters could accurately reproduce a sentence the way it would be spoken by someone with a foreign or regional accent. In his demonstrations, Melville Bell employed his son, Alexander Graham Bell to read from the visible speech transcript of the volunteer's spoken words and would astound the audience by saying it back exactly as the volunteer had spoken it.

Plusieurs remarques dans cet opuscule mettent en lumière l'opposition entre deux écoles, celles des internes de Charcot à la Salpêtrière et celle de Jean Laborde de l'hôpital de Bicêtre : "Laborde saw the cause of cerebral softening in the primary dilation of brain capillaries, but the for the house officers [...] cerebral softening was primarily caused by vascular occulusion." Following Charcot, pp. 12-13.

        Lock of hair.

No place or date. - A blond strand of hair, tied into a circular locket with pink string, mounted on a certificate of authenticity dated 1867. Matted. 8vo. The locket's provenance is accounted for by the included certificates of authenticity and confirmation of sale for nearly its entire first century: first, in the possession of the Weimar librarian and counsellor Theodor Kräuter (1790-1856), since 1805 a scribe at the Ducal Library and Goethe's private secretary from 1811 onwards; by descent to his nephew, the Weimar lawyer and writer Robert Keil (1826-96), who vouches for its authenticity on his drystamped, sealed stationery: "These are hairs of Schiller which belonged to the estate of the late librarian and counsellor Dr. Theodor Kräuter here in Weimar, former private secretary to Goethe. This is confirmed by Kräuter's nephew, Dr. Robert Keil, lawyer. Weimar, 20 April 1867". This certificate was probably occasioned by the relic's transfer to the Weimar Schillerhaus, the custodian of which was a distant relative of Keil's, the Weimar art dealer Eduard Lobe. But nine months later, Lobe sold the lock to the historically-minded Chicago lawyer and entrepreneur, Thomas Barbour Bryan (1828-1906): "This lock of Schiller's I have on this day sold to Mr. T. B. Bryan, and herewith confirm its authenticity. Weimar, 23 January 1868". Bryan is remembered as a sponsor of and Commissioner-At-Large for Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. As early as 1860 he had exhibited G. P. A. Healy's portrait of Abraham Lincoln at his "Bryan Hall" gallery; in 1864 he had a lithographic facsimile of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation prepared which he sent the President for examination. - Acquired from an Austrian noble collection.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1867 : 1867 Original Wisden in Very Good Condition

1867. As far as I am aware, this is the first 1867 in original covers to be offered on this site. The book itself is in excellent condition. The front and rear wrappers are very slightly darkened and with the odd mark as can be seen from the photographs. The wrappers are entirely complete without any chips or loss. There is a small closed tear to the front wrapper which has not resulted in any loss at all. Internally, the book is in fabulous condition for it's age. The pages are clean, original and unmarked. The book has had no restoration whatsoever. It is very rare to find a book of this age in entirely original condition with it's original wrappers. A super copy. We also have fabulous copies for 1864 and 1868 in original wrappers which we hope to list shortly.

MISS RAVENEL'S CONVERSION from Secession to Loyalty

1867. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1867. 2 pp preliminary ads + 6 pp terminal ads, undated. Original green cloth lettered in gilt, with beveled boards. First Edition of this momentous novel of the American Civil War, published just two years after its conclusion.~The distinction... of writing the first American novel which may be called realistic in a modern sense belongs to John W. De Forest... Coldly truthful in its descriptions of battles and camps, crisp and pointed in its dialogue, penetrating if not over-subtle in its character analysis, sensible in its plot and in its general temper, it is still almost as convincing as it was once precocious [van Doren].~The panoramic sweep of the book suggests GONE WITH THE WIND, though its spirit is very different. Into this novel De Forest poured his own experiences of battle -- quite invalidating the familiar claim that Stephen Crane was the first writer to break with the romantic tradition in stories of war -- and his wide experience of life and knowledge of character, both north and south. The book alone would suffice to establish De Forest's claim both for historic importance and absolute achievement in the field of the American novel [Wagenknecht].~This copy is in green sand-grain cloth, one of several options (no priority). Condition is, in a word, FINE. Blanck 4605.

A very good copy, boards worn at corners, a few letters inked to verso of free front endpaper, two tiny holes near top of free rear endpaper, otherwise contents are near fine.. 167 pp. Illus. with 2 b/w folding charts. A rare report on La Ciudad de México presented to Emperor Maximilian during his reign. Contains extensive information on the city and its people issued for the second half of 1866. The last third is an appendix containing "Coleccion de las disposiciones de policia dictadas en el ano de 1866" detailing municiple ordinances for the full year. Texas at Austin, Stanford, Univ. Iberoamericana, and BN Mexico. Palau 340777.

Book of the Artists, American Artist Life

Putnam, New York, 1867. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. TUCKERMAN, HENRY T. Book of the Artists, American Artist Life, New York: Putnam, 1867. Quarto, large-paper edition, pp. xi, 7-639, black buckram boards with green lettering to spine, a rebinding with numerous extra illustrations bound in, as well as three holograph letters by the author, and a note from a former owner. The letters are: 1. A one-page exhortation in verse (Tuckerman liked to write in verse) to Col. Frank Howe, a Union Army figure of some importance behind the lines, just after the outbreak of the Civil War. 2. A 2-page (one leaf) letter to Gen. Adam Badeau, an aide to Ulysses Grant on the battlefield and in the White House, with personal comments and remarks on Badeau's work in progress -- a massive book about Grant. Dated 1870, not reproduced here. 3. A 4-line verse dated 1864 -- it may have been part of a letter or merely something Tuckerman wrote for himself. Howes, T-401, says 50 large-paper copies were released in addition to a trade edition. It is unclear how may of the illustrations here were original, and how many were added later. There are about 25 in all; a few were simply laid in. All are engravings except for one albumen photo print, of Charles Robert Leslie. Tuckerman profiles major and minor American artists and is still considered an important scholarly reference. See Arntzen & Rainwater, E-178. The present copy is very clean and tight, with a few marks to the boards. Special Limited Edition, first issue in this format. Size: Quarto. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2-3 kilos. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; United States; 19th century; Art & Design. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request.         Lehrbuch des Pandektenrechts.

Düsseldorf, Verlagshandlung von Julius Buddeus, 1867-70. 2. Aufl. 3 Bde. 8vo. XV, 736; XV, 883; X, 1 Bl., 421 S. Schöne zeitgenössische Halblederbände mit Rückenprägung und Buntpapierbezug. (alte, zeitgenössische St.a.T.). In seinem Brief vom 18. - Bd. 1 : Einleitung. Erstes Buch: Von dem Rechte überhaupt. Zweites Buch: Von den Rechten überhaupt. Drittes Buch: Das Sachenrecht. Bd. 2: Viertes Buch: Recht der Forderungen. Fünftes Buch: Das Familien-Recht. Bd. 3: Sechstes Buch: Erbrecht Versand D: 2,00 EUR

Studio portrait of four young Māori women, circa 1867

Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 91 x 62 mm, mount 105 x 63 mm, blind stamped W.J. Hardingat lower right margin; verso with contemporary inscription 'Group of Maorie Ladies For Mr. J. Allison'; both the albumen print and mount are in very good condition. A fine studio portrait by the early Whanganui photographer, William James Harding. The photograph can be dated through the inscription on the back: the carte de visite was presented to one of the Whanganui district's early settlers, James Allison of Lamb Hill homestead, Warrengate, who died in 1867. Allison had married Georgianna Gilfillan, the daughter of another prominent early settler, the artist J.A. Gilfillan, in 1845, when Georgianna was just fifteen.
