A 4pp ALS from General Charles Gordon while building the forts that guard the Thames

Written from Gravesend addressed to Nugent dated January 14, 1866 reads in part, "Since I wrote, the foreign officer applied for an officer to build the Consulates in China and Japan and Corpsman has taken it. The berth will be for about two or three years. No one is around to succeed him at W. office. Division comes back next month and I expect he will succeed in J.B. - which case I so not think Jervois will stay at W. Office for he has involved himself with granite too much as to render it difficult to retract. Ward has come back, but only to complete a certain term when he will leave & go back to Australia . . . Very bad news from Olivia, although not confirmed positively, it appears they have dismissed Hart! This and other indications look as if they were indeed to give trouble to us. There are two parties in China as in Japan. The one favorable to . . . and which is the weakest, and the other unfavourable to . . . which is the strongest . . . I know no details of Hart's dismissal, it has evidently be

The female blondin outdone! Grand morning performance on the narrow plank by the darling xxxx]

Thos. Agnew & Sons, London 1866 - A delightful image of three fashionable young ladies and their younger siblings, all enjoying the benefits of a day beside the sea. An unusually large scale work from the famous illustrator of Dickens, Surtees, Thackeray and others. In 1862 John Leech 'essayed a series of so-called "sketches in oil," which were exhibited at the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly, in June and the following months. These consisted of copies of a selection of his Punch drawings, which had been ingeniously enlarged, transferred to canvas, and coloured lightly in oils. As the artist advanced with this process he considerably improved it in detail, and his exhibition was a great success (it brought him nearly 5,000 pounds), to which a friendly notice by Thackeray (Times, 21 June) not a little contributed. His gift for seizing fugitive expression and for mentally registering transitory situation was extraordinary. Long practice had made it unerring in its way, and Leech perhaps wisely concentrated his attention upon these points. Yet he possessed, like Keene, a marvellous faculty for landscape, and in many cases the backgrounds to his sketches are in themselves of striking beauty. No words define his general position in art better than Mr. Ruskin's: His work contains the finest definition and natural history of the classes of our society; the kindest and subtlest analysis of its foibles, the tenderest flattery of its pretty and well-bred ways, with which the modesty of subservient genius ever immortalised or amused careless masters. ( DNB ). Here a teenage girl in a great, round crinoline skirt that balloons in the wind walks a thin plank that leads to a bathing booth, while her friend (sister?) watches impassively, the mother reads her book and the little children play oblivious to the little contest going on nearby. Chromolithograph, on original mount. Title and credits trimmed from bottom margin of mount.

Garfield?s copy of the rare printing of his remarks in the House of Representatives on the first anniversary of Lincoln?s assassination ? his words were used to memorialize him after his own assassination 16 years later

The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Books were a scarce commodity to young James, who lost his father before the age of two, and was raised by his mother who struggled to maintain a humble existence. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books and pamphlets. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books and pamphlets were de-accessioned, and one of these is described below:Pamphlet, ?Remarks of Hon. Jas. A. Garfield of Ohio in the House of Representatives, April 14, 1866, In Memory of Abraham Lincoln,? four pages, 5? x 8?. Washington, D.C.: Hudson Taylor, Printer, 1866. Stamped signature ?J.A. Printed document signed by William Wilson, a resident of Columbus County Arkansas, one page, 8" x 6", January 8, 1866. Headed: "Amnesty Oath, Under Proclamation of the President of the United States, Dated May 29, 1865", whereby the individual taking the oath swears "in the presence of Almighty God, that I will henceforth faithfully support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of States hereunder: and that I will in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the emancipation of slaves - so help me God". An amnesty oath is a general pardon, especially for political offenses against the government. Those individuals who took the oath secured citizenship in the government of the United States, with all privileges incident to such status. Arkansas seceded from the United States, by Resolution, dated May 6, 1861, and two weeks later was admitted to the

Fine condition. In an address he delivered in London on May 19, 1846, Frederick Douglas had said, in part, "I am opposed to war, because I am a believer in Christianity...The first gleam of Christian truth that beamed upon my dark mind, after having escaped the clutches of those who held me in slavery, was accompanied by the spirit of love...I could not have injured one hair of the head of my worst enemy..." 1866 was an eventful year for Douglass and Black Americans. In the summer of 1866, Congress passed two bills over the president's veto. One, the Freedmen's Bureau Bill, extended the powers of the government agency that had been established in 1865 for the purpose of providing medical, educational, and financial assistance for the millions of impoverished southern Blacks. Autograph Letter, Signed, As Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

1866. Chief Justice Chase Discusses Reconstruction with the Wife of a Civil War General Chase, Salmon P. [1808-1873]. [McDowell, Helen (1826-1891)]. [Autograph Letter, Signed, As Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, To Mrs. Irvin McDowell]. Washington, 24 April 1866. Leaf folded to form four-page 5" x 8" bifolium, written in ink. Light toning, two horizontal and one vertical fold lines. Tear to ends of vertical fold, otherwise fine. * "I CANNOT HELP FEELING GRAVE CONCERN FOR THE COUNTRY, Chase tells Mrs. McDowell. He fears "new convulsions" from former slave owners restored to prominence by President Andrew Johnson's lax reconstruction policies. "How strange it seems, this extensive change which has happened in these last four years! How wonderful the transition and the events: and yet how little the wiser we seem to be for them all. To me it's been as if the very same elements of disturbance were being permitted, and in new names & character to prepare new convulsions. I cannot help feeling grave concern for the country; and should be really heartsick if I did not remember that God rules; & that God is Love, and that thousands of prayers continually go up before Him from sincere & devoted hearts that He will bring Good out of apparent evil. The controversy between the President & Congress is greatly to be deplored. Doubtless there are faults on both sides; but I think most on his. He is a Unit, Congress a Plural....and a very little consideration would have availed all our trouble." Helen McDowell was the wife of General Irvin McDowell [1818-1885], the General best known for his defeat in the First Battle of Bull Run, the first major battle of the American Civil War. Mrs. McDowell played an important role during the war through her work for the Sanitary Commission, the forerunner of the American Red Cross.

        Felix Holt The Radical

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1866 Three volumes. First edition, in Carter's "A" binding (the earliest), with half-titles, 24 (4+20_ pages of publisher advertisements at the rear of Vol. III (not mentioned in Sadleir). Publisher's cinnamon cloth, decorative borders stamped in blind to the boards, spines lettered in gilt, pale yellow coated endpapers. An excellent set, with some light wear to the extremities, some rubbing to the hinges, faint spotting to the spines, bright gilt, former owner's bookplates to the front pastedowns, a few faint spots of scattered spotting to the otherwise bright and clean pages. A near fine, unsophisticated set. Felix Holt the Radical is a social novel by Mary Anne Evans, a top writer of the Victorian Era who chose to write under a male pseudonym so that her works would be taken more seriously. In addition to writing novels, she edited and contributed to the left-wing journal The Westminster Review as one of the only female editors of her time. Her novels were praised for being socially and politically conscious and realistic depictions of country life. In Felix Holt, Eliot examines the social changes that occurred in the English countryside as a result of the Frist Reform Act of 1832, which reformed Parliament to reflect the new urban and rural dynamics that resulted from the Industrial Revolution. Rather than explain the events leading up to this reform, Eliot focuses on how public political policies affect the private lives of rural Englishmen. Felix Holt tells the story of a tumultuous election in the fictional town Treby in the English Midlands, a small village previously unaffected by political goings-on that has been thrust into political turmoil by the Reform Act. Published around the time of the Second Reform Act of 1867, which extended enfranchisement to the working class, nearly doubling England's number of eligible voters, Felix Holt is a retrospective text that considers past legislation in juxtaposition with the new reform.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

A BOOK OF NONSENSE.

[ii] 112 pages, printed on one side of paper. Illustrated with hand-coloured title and 112 hand-coloured illustrations with limericks beneath. Original red cloth stamped and lettered gilt on upper cover; blind-stamped ruling on lower cover. All edges gilt. Oblong 12mo. Twentieth edition, with many new pictures and verses. Re-cased and joints repaired; some slight wear to the edges of few pages; some light marking and occasionally spotting; else a very good copy of a rare printing. Rare. Not in Justin Schiller's 'Lear' catalogue The last hand-coloured copy sold at auction was in 1974. Routledge, Warne and Routledge published the 18th edition c.1865 of which some copies were hand-coloured. Warne set up his own business July 1 1865 and it is unclear who published the 19th edition and whether a deluxe hand-coloured edition was issued. The preface to this 20th edition is dated 1866 and must be one of the earliest Warne editions due to the following typographical errors: The title page has Fbederick for Frederick; and the dedication page has originaly for originally.

ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. With forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel.

Original red pictorial cloth gilt. a.e.g. Light blue endpapers. Second (First Published) Edition. Some foxing here & there throughout; spine repaired and a little cocked; else a very good copy. There are three ownership inscriptions on the front free endpaper, the first of which is, 'Ellen Gertrude Brewer 1865.' The first (Withdrawn) edition and the second edition are both taller than later printings. It remains uncertain how many copies of this edition were printed. The likelihood is that two thousand copies were printed, but it may have been as many as four thousand. The book was actually issued in November 1865, the same year as the first ('Withdrawn') edition. It is becoming increasingly rare to find copies of this printing in the original cloth, the vast majority of copies on the market having been rebound.

Mother, Dear Mother, I Still Think of Thee. Sung by Blind Tom, at His Popular Concerts with the Greatest Success

London: Hopwood & Crew, 1866. 8 pages including the cover. Removed from a bound volume so slightly trimmed with rough left edge. Very scarce sheet music sheet music shows a full-length portrait of Blind Tom (Thomas Wiggins Bethune) at about 16 years of age standing next to a piano. Published in London, probably during Tom's European tour of 1866, which was coordinated by W. P. Howard. Tom, a blind autistic savant with incredible music ability, was one of the most famous performers of the mid-19th century. Born a slave in 1849, his mother (Charity Wiggins) and master (General James Bethune) discovered his inexplicable ability to mimic the most difficult piano performances immediately upon hearing them. By the time he was five years old, Tom was giving concerts and stunning critics with his virtuosity. As Bethune saw then end of the Civil War approaching, he contracted with Tom's parents to obtain guardianship in exchange for a home, subsistence, and monthly stipend for them and a salary for Tom. Bethune, his son, and finally his son's widow continued the arrangement and made hundreds of thousands of dollars from Tom's performances throughout the latter half of the 1800s.. Sheet Music. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.
