        Autograph Letter Signed on "Explorers Club," stationery, 8vo, New York, July 12, n.y.

      - Jackson likely writes to Martin S. Garretson, (1866-1955), known for his study of and advocacy for the American bison, also depicted in Garretson's moving photogravures. Jackson begins the letter to Garretson. "Otherwise a 'Sinful Maverick': I had intended delivering this little picture personally.but an urgent request from Wyoming to be out there for some sort of an affair this coming week, will keep me so busy.that I must rely upon the mail to do the work for me." Jackson then hopes his picture would find, "a place among the other 'old timers' ." He signs, "W. H. Jackson," and in parentheses adds, "(Pawnee Bill?)" Garretson was called the "Sinful Maverick," and given the age difference between the two men, Jackson would be the old timer. From 1870 to 1878 Jackson was the official photographer for the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. His photographs of the natural beauty of northwestern Wyoming, taken during the Hayden survey expedition of 1871, were exhibited in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. and credited with having influenced the U.S. Congress to establish Yellowstone National Park in 1872. After he retired in 1924 from commercial photography, he traveled back to Wyoming for public appearances. In his official retirement, Jackson returned to painting on Western themes. It is possible that our letter was written during this later period and the picture Jackson mentions is a painting for Garretson. Martin Garretson, as a young man, traveled West to work as a rancher at the time the bison population was becoming depleted due to expanding settlements on the American plains. Garretson sought to reverse the decimation of the bison herds and eventually became one of the founders of the American Bison Society. He later served as its Secretary and eventually headed the department of Heads and Horns at the Bronx Zoo. During that time, he conducted the majority of the research for his book "The American Bison" (New York, 1938), which remains a standard reference on the species. Jackson's self reference as "Pawnee Bill?", the American showman, suggests association to the showman of the same name as well as to his photographs of the Pawnee tribe.

        Book of American Pastimes, Containing a History of the Principal Base Ball, Cricket, Rowing and Yachting Clubs of the United States

      New York: Published by The Author. 1866. First. First edition. Reddish-brown cloth gilt. 556pp. Tiny early owner's name, corners a little rubbed and bumped, a very good or better copy with one signature slightly sprung, still an unusually nice copy of a very important, self-published book. Over 150 pages are devoted to baseball. Grobani in his definitive Guide to Baseball Literature characterizes this book under General Histories as G1 and comments: "Sketches of all National Association Clubs... The definitive history of early baseball." Almost always found in deplorable condition, this is a nice copy and very uncommon thus. .

He spend some time in the Sudan, and in February 1863 at Gondokro he met Speke and Grant on their return from an expedition undertaken with the same purpose during which they had reached Lake Victoria. They told Baker of some rumors they had heard of another great lake farther to the west. Baker then continued his journey, and after many adventures he first saw the great lake on 14 March 1864, and named it Albert N’Yanza (Lake Albert). With this discovery an answer had been found to the age-old question of the origin of the Nile. Baker was a man in the great imperial tradition of the Victorian age. He published many books on his various journeys and big-game hunting trips, and these books were some of the first to bring to Europe a picture of Africa as it really was" (Printing and the Mind of Man).Printing and the Mind of Man 357.         Idiocy: and its Treatment by the Physiological Method

      New York: William Wood & Co., , 1866. Octavo. Original brown pebble-grained cloth, title gilt to spine, blind panelling to the boards. A little rubbed and sunned, neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down. First edition of the first book published in America dealing with the care and institutional management of the mentally retarded. Under the influence of the teachings of Itard and Esquirol, both of whom he studied under, which stressed the humane treatment of the insane, Seguin developed methods for managing mental retardation that emphasized education and physical training. "Seguin's system of training was based on the methodology of physiological education. It was his theory that idiocy (or feeblemindedness, as we term it today) is only a prolonged infancy, and that it could be overcome through the application of proper training methods. For a long time he cherished the belief that mental defect was curable. While later results showed this notion to be untenable, the same results did confirm the great value of his educational methods in improving the condition." (Deutsch Mentally Ill in America, p.338) Seguin's programme at his Physiological School in New York City, where he stressed the importance of developing self-reliance and independence, was a major influence on the educational theories of Maria Montessori. An important and highly uncommon book.;

        6. Långskeppet från norra galleriet. [A numbered photo from the Industrial exhibition in Stockholm 1866]

      [1866] 1866 - Photo mounted to card board. Photo 44 x 35 cm. Card board 58,5 x 45 cm. The photo shows the interior of the main hall of the exhibition. In the distance you can see Molins Fontän, still in plaster. It was later iron cast and placed roughly at the same spot in Kungsträdgården. The photo was published by the firm Eurenius & Quist who was the official photographers of the exhibition. The firm issued a portfolio containing 12 oversized albumen prints, titled "Fotografiska bilder från första allmänna Skandinaviska Industriutställningen i Stockholm". The glass negative must have been quite a challenge to handle. A scarce photo. The card board with a printed frame line and a plan of the exhebition hall above the photo. The plan of the exhebition hall above the photo cut in half. Some smudges and scratches to the card board. The photo in nice condition.
