Jefferson Davis boldly signs a photograph for a prominent southern newspaper editor, who in turn presented it as a wedding present in December 1866 to H. Victor Newcomb, banker and founder of the West Shore Railroad, who became the focus of a notorious insanity case

Richmond, Virginia, [1866] His signature, "Jeffrn: Davis," accomplished on a carte-de-visite photograph bearing a bust portrait of Davis by Vannerson & Jones of Richmond, Virginia, with the photographer's printed credit on verso. Very boldly signed by Davis in the blank portion beneath his image. Some minor damage to emulsion at top of the carte, not affecting the image, light marginal toning, else very good condition overall. According to a note that had been placed on the backing of a frame that once displayed the carte (and is included here), the signed carte was "Presented to H[oratio] Victor Newcomb in 1866 by John R. Thompson of Virginia his groomsman - given[?] to John R. Thompson by Jefferson Davis that same year ?" For my darling boy Herman D[anforth] Newcomb a Christmas rembrance[?] 1889..." John Reuben Thompson (1823-1873) was an American poet, journalist, editor and publisher. In 1847, he became the editor of the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond, and in 1859 editor of The Southern Field and Fireside in Augusta, Georgia. Thompson did not take part in the Civil War due to health reasons. Instead, he went to London, from where he supported the Confederacy by writing articles in English magazines. Horatio Victor Newcomb (1844-1911) was a prominent Louisville, Kentucky banker. He married Florence Ward Danforth on December 26, 1866 in a ceremony in Louisville. In 1880 Horatio moved to New York and organized the United States National Bank and took up residence in a house at 683 Fifth Avenue. He was also the founder of the West Shore Railroad. (B. M. Newcomb, "Horatio Victor Newcomb," America's Successful Men of Affairs: An Encyclopedia of Contemporaneous Biography, 1896.) Toward the end of the century, Newcomb became addicted to chloral and started behaving erratically, including threatening the life of H. M. Flagler of Standard Oil. At the time of his committal, he turned over his fortune to his wife and children. Upon his release the following year, he sued for return of his monies. A court declared him "sane" in August 1901 and he managed to recover his fortune and obtain a separation from his wife. Herman Danforth Newcomb (1872-1958) was born in Louisville, Kentucky and married Miss Matilda Churchill, the great granddaughter of Colonel Armistead Churchill, who organized the Louisville Jockey Club which established the famous racetrack, Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. The couple divided their time between Wavetree Hall in Greenwood, Virginia and Louisville, Kentucky.

Eigenh. Brief m. Unterschrift ("J. Stefan").

Wien, 25. I. 1866.. 1 1/2 S., Gr.-8°.. [An den österr. Chemiker u. -

Autograph Letter Signed on "Explorers Club," stationery, 8vo, New York, July 12, n.y

. Jackson likely writes to Martin S. Garretson, (1866-1955), known for his study of and advocacy for the American bison, also depicted in Garretson's moving photogravures. Jackson begins the letter to Garretson. "Otherwise a 'Sinful Maverick': I had intended delivering this little picture personally...but an urgent request from Wyoming to be out there for some sort of an affair this coming week, will keep me so busy...that I must rely upon the mail to do the work for me...." Jackson then hopes his picture would find, "a place among the other 'old timers' ...." He signs, "W. H. Jackson," and in parentheses adds, "(Pawnee Bill?)" Garretson was called the "Sinful Maverick," and given the age difference between the two men, Jackson would be the old timer. From 1870 to 1878 Jackson was the official photographer for the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. His photographs of the natural beauty of northwestern Wyoming, taken during the Hayden survey expedition of 1871, were exhibited in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. and credited with having influenced the U.S. Congress to establish Yellowstone National Park in 1872. After he retired in 1924 from commercial photography, he traveled back to Wyoming for public appearances. In his official retirement, Jackson returned to painting on Western themes. It is possible that our letter was written during this later period and the picture Jackson mentions is a painting for Garretson. Martin Garretson, as a young man, traveled West to work as a rancher at the time the bison population was becoming depleted due to expanding settlements on the American plains. Garretson sought to reverse the decimation of the bison herds and eventually became one of the founders of the American Bison Society. He later served as its Secretary and eventually headed the department of Heads and Horns at the Bronx Zoo. During that time, he conducted the majority of the research for his book "The American Bison" (New York, 1938), which remains a standard reference on the species. Jackson's self reference as "Pawnee Bill?", the American showman, suggests association to the showman of the same name as well as to his photographs of the Pawnee tribe.

Expertly bound to style in half red morocco over period pebbled cloth covered boards, spine with raised bands, lettered in the second compartment, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers A near complete set of this gallery of ground-breaking work, a five-volume celebration of the etching revival in France led by Delacroix, Manet, Fantin-Latour, Corot, Courbet and Meryon. This outstanding collection is one of the seminal publications to spring out of the etching revival in France. The Société des Aqua-Fortistes was the French equivalent of the Etching Club in England and similarly it aimed to produce a collection of high quality etchings by the leading artists of the period. Like the Etching Club, the Société des Aqua-Fortistes sought to raise the reputation of the medium from a reproductive technique to a fine art. Although the etching revival began somewhat earlier in England, the French movement exerted a far greater influence on the medium, and included a wider range of prominent artists. The Barbizon painters were among the earliest French artists to participate in the etching revival, and their superb prints helped raise the medium to new heights. This unique publication is an outstanding example of fine art printing at its best. Some of the highlights of the collection include: Plate 2. DAUBIGNY. Parc à moutons, le matin . Plate 4. MANET. Les Gitanos. Plate 38. COROT. Souvenir d'Italie . Plate 67. MANET. Lola de Valence. Plate 142. FANTIN-LATOUR. Un Morceau de Schumann. Plate 161. DAUBIGNY. Les Vendanges. Plate 171. DELACROIX.

The Atmotic Ship by the Hon. W. Bland, M.L.C

Sydney: David Mason, printer, 1866. Single printed sheet measuring 570 x 445 mm., split at folds with slight loss of text (now carefully repaired and backed upon linen), a few tape-marks, good condition overall. Pioneering airship design in nineteenth century Sydney. Rare Sydney broadside promoting the 'Atmotic Ship' - an early steam driven airship designed to carry passengers. The Atmotic ship was the inspiration of Sydney surgeon and parliamentarian William Bland (1789-1868), who began his long and varied career as a naval surgeon. A duel in Bombay brought Bland to Australia in chains; here he gained some prominence as a vocal emancipist and effervescent member of the Sydney Town community. Throughout his life, Bland championed civil freedoms and worked extensively in the interests of the poor and disadvantaged. The Atmotic ship is essentially a self-propelled balloon fitted with a large deck capable of holding numerous passengers. It was to be driven by steam powered propellers and controlled with a simple steering apparatus. In this broadside, printed some 15 years after Bland patented his invention, the Atmotic ship is described and illustrated with four detailed plans. Various practical hazards and obstacles are broached, including the danger of the inflammable gas balloon exploding, and the alarming risk of lighting striking the vessel. On a more abstract plane, Bland discusses the possibility of 'barbarous nations of the earth' overwhelming the civilized world using fleets of Atmotic ships, but ultimately decides this risk is an acceptable price of progress.Possible uses for the Atmotic ship include astronomy, delivery of long-distance post, safe carriage of gold and gemstones, as well as exploring the interior of Australia and other inaccessible regions. This broadside is rare, copies are held in three institutional collections including the State Library of New South Wales and the National Library.
