Original Deed to a Notable Historic Property in Little Kilbanow in the Parish of Amroth, County of Pembroke, Wales, part of the Picton Castle Estate [United Kingdom]

London, 1865. First edition. [No Binding -- Single Sheet Document. Fine. An ORIGINAL 1865 Indenture to Real Estate in Pembrokeshire, Wales, adjacent to the historic Picton Castle Estate -- Picton Castle being a medieval Castle near Haverford West in Pembrokeshire originally constructed in the 13th Century by a Flemish Knight. The Castle became the property of Sir John Wogan, an ancestor of the Philipps family, who was a Cambro-Norman judge and who served as Justiciar of Ireland from 1295 to 1313, making him the most important Common Law Judge of Ireland at the time. [The Cambro-Normans were Normans who settled in southern Wales after the Norman conquest of England in 1066 conducted by William the Conqueror. The most prominent Cambro-Norman was Richard "Strongbow" de Clare, whose lands in Wales centered on Pembroke and who led the Norman invasion of Ireland.] The land conveyed by the Indenture described herein and dated 29th September 1865 was sold for 775 Pounds by Henry Sanders of Tenby in Pembroke County to Rev. James Henry Alexander Philipps, Vicar of St. Mary’s, Haverfordwest (Philipps being a descendant of Sir John Wogan who formerly had the surname Gwyther but who assumed the name Phillips upon taking title to Picton Castle). By this Indenture (which one now would describe as a "Deed") Philipps expanded the Picton Castle Estate by seventeen acres, one rood and five perches. The property thereby conveyed was then generally known as Little Kilbanow and is shown in a drawing made upon the Indenture and shaded in pink. The the conveyed property is shown as a set of numbered parcels, the respective then-uses of which are set forth in a chart shown on the Indenture. From examining the drawings, it appears that the acquisition of the property covered by the Indenture filled a large gap in the Picton Estate property. Picton Castle -- and certainly the property conveyed by this Indenture -- was seized by the French in 1405 and was later seized by the Parliamentary Forces in 1645 during the English Civil War -- showing the Castle and adjacent land to be a strategically important Welsh properly. Picton Castle remains owned and occupied by descendants of James Henry Alexander Philipps and we assume that the property conveyed by the Indenture does so as well . The deed (which measures approximately 28 inches X approximately 22 1/2 inches) is in Fine condition with all wax seals and the stamp tax sticker present. [An interesting article on Picton Castle and its history can be found on Wikipedia.] A Fine ORIGINAL INDENTURE [DEED] CONVEYING A PORTION OF ONE OF THE MOST NOTABLE PROPERTIES IN ALL OF WALES. RARE.

Diogenes His Lantern Needs no More, An Honest Man Is Found! -- The Search Is O'er.

New York: N.P. Beers, 1865. Broadside. Folio (15" X 20"). Engraved by H.B. Hall. Very good to near fine. Exceptionally clean and attractive, with sharp, untrimmed edges and just the faintest bit of age toning. This handsome broadside is actually a Lincoln assassination piece that appears to have been altered into a Horace Greeley election broadside for the 1872 presidential election -- a fascinating oddity. In this superb stipple-point engraving, the ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes of Sinope (ca. 412bc - 323bc) is seated front and center, holding up a lantern and leaning against a large, laurel-draped oval portrait of Lincoln. (Diogenes is supposed to have carried a lantern during the day, searching in vain for an honest man.) Immediately behind Diogenes is the base of an enormous column, while in the background at upper left is the U.S. Capital building. The two-line caption "Diogenes His Lantern Needs No More, / An Honest Man Is Found! -- The Search Is O'er" runs across the blank lower margin. The oval portrait that Diogenes leans over is a fine head-and-shoulders portrait of the bewhiskered and bespectacled Greeley as he appeared in later years -- but when a strong light source is placed directly underneath this portrait the ghostly image of Lincoln shows through from beneath. Holzer, Boritt and Neely write about this broadside in their 1984 study "The Lincoln Image: Abraham Lincoln and the Popular Print." They note, "Lincoln's fabled honesty was at the core of a public image that endures to this day. Lincoln owed his election to the presidency in 1860 in no small part to this image, summed up in the political sobriquet invented for the campaign: 'Honest Abe, the Railsplitter of the West.' It connoted integrity and, implicitly, the American dream of the right to rise. By 1865, the year of his assassination, the Lincoln image had grown richer. Now he was also the Great Emancipator, the savior of the Union and the martyr of liberty. This post-assassination rendition of the search of the ancient Greek philosopher for an honest man indicates that Lincoln's integrity continued at the heart of what Americans saw in him." What we have here, then, is an assassination broadside turned campaign broadside. Whether this jerry-rigged Greeley campaign item is simply a "one up" crafted by a devout supporter, or was produced in any kind of quantity, is not known -- although further research might well determine this. The size of the Greeley portrait is so ideal, its cut and placement into the existing oval so precise, that the deception is not easily noticed. Possibly a quantity of unsold Beers Lincoln prints were discovered and an instant and exceptionally attractive Greeley campaign poster engineered in this fashion. This broadside obviously does not specifically state "Greeley for President," but its message -- that here is an honest man to trust -- is clearly intended to espouse Greeley as a worthy presidential candidate. It's also possible that this Lincoln mourning broadside was intended as a Greeley mourning broadside -- but Greeley's campaign and his death were so close together that this too might be impossible to verify. In 1872 Greeley participated in his one and only and absolutely disastrous presidential campaign, accepting the Liberal Republican nomination. Greeley's character was thoroughly raked over the coals, his defeat was enormous (he won only six states), his wife died shortly afterward and he lost control of the editorship of his beloved "New York Tribune." Greeley promptly went insane and, just as promptly, died.

Cartoon sequence set in Africa. No place, c. 1865.

1865. Twelve curious illustrations depicting the adventures of a "nigger minstrel" troupe ("the Ebonys") in Africa, in a sketchbook also containing the journal of a tour of duty in the Ionian Sea during the year 1865. Grotesquely humourous story of three minstrels, setting out "from Assention" with their faithful crocodile "Crock" via the "overland route in Africa". After being severely discomfitured by several wildebeests' "Night Attack in the Jungle", they embark on crocodile-back, sail for the Cape of Africa and are nearly eaten by sharks, but eventually arrive at the Cape (albeit "with the loss of the faithful Crock"). Here they entertain natives with their musical antics before crossing the Zambesi for the continent's interior, escape an "attack of the Crocodiles", capture a rhinoceros (which they ride to the Tune of "I am off to Old Varginie") and battle gorillas, pythons, and monkeys. Half a century later, Dr. Livingstone discovers their bones; "too late to render them any assistance - to the tune of Poor Old Ned". The overt racism of Carte's illustrations (not unusual for the Victorian period), and their strange blending of African and Afro-American stereotypes, indicate a subconscious attempt on his part to master cultural fears through ridicule. - The remainder of the notebook is taken up by a 15-page naval diary of Carte's Royal Navy mission in the Ionian Sea during early 1865, as well as by calculations, technical diagrams and reference tables as would be employed by a naval engineer on a steam ship. A memo concerning the relative powers of ship's captain and engineer points to an insubordinate streak in Carte's character. - E. L. Carte was born at Barton-upon-Humber in Lincolnshire. He was educated in Hamburg and Antwerp until 1853, when he was sent to Scotland to learn the engineering trade. His first experience of the sea was on a ship belonging to his uncle, Joseph Gee of Hull. In 1861, following Gee's death, Carte entered the Royal Navy as Assistant Engineer. He was promoted to the rank of Engineer in 1868. During his career Carte served on at least 15 ships, including the HMS Bristol (1867), HMS Greyhound (1867-69), HMS Mersey (1869-70, at Queenstown) and HMS Iron Duke (1871-74, during which time he was the engineer responsible for commissioning the engines), and HMS Ready (1878-82), with deployments off West Africa and South America and in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. He was placed on the retired list in 1888. Carte married Sarah (Sally) Flunder of Sheerness on 3 June 1863 at Minster Sheppey, Kent, and had four children. He died at Southampton on 23 June 1911.

Autograph letter signed. Hottingen near Zurich, 20. X. 1865.

1865. Large 4to. 2½ pp. on 4 ff. A very long and comprehensive letter to Franz von Pfistermeister, cabinet secretary to Ludwig II of Bavaria, on preliminary works for a Festival Theatre for Wagner in Munich. The project was pursued for a few years but ultimately not realised. Ludwig decided to build the theatre in Weimar instead of Munich; nevertheless, Semper's original drafts were used (albeit without the architect's permission). In his letter, Semper gives a very detailed account of the central position of the orchestra, the stage, and the auditorium. He refers to Wagner, with whom he had discussed the project, and his ideas for interior designs. - The foundation stone of the Weimar Festival Theatre was laid on Wagner's birthday in May 1872; construction was realised under the German architect Otto Brückwald, and the building first opened for the premiere of the complete four-opera cycle of "Der Ring des Nibelungen" (13-17 August 1876). One year later Wagner wrote to Semper: "The theatre, though crude and artless, is executed according to your drafts" (cf. Hermann Sturm, Alltag & Kult, Basel 2003, p. 109f.). - Somewhat browned and spotty; fol. 1 nearly torn in the centerfold, small tears and slight ruststains.

Autograph letter signed to Princess Troubetskoy. Baden, 28. III. 1865.

1865. 8vo. 4 pp. In French. Turgenev had read the first part of Tolstoy's new novel 1805 ['War and Peace'], which appeared in instalments between 1863 and 1869. He found it boring and cold, and complains of the lack of historical sense and of its lack of poetry: "Que c'est ennuyeux et froid, quelle recherche de la petite bete, quel manque absolu de sens historique, d'imagination et meme de poesie (chose etrange chez lui). C'est un peintre de miniatures qui a voulu faire un grand tableau d'histoire - et il s'est casse le nez [...]". He adds that Merimee views Tolstoy's 'The Cossacks' in a similar light; Turgenev himself considered The Cossacks to be the best story written in the Russian language. He describes life in Baden and the musical matinees given each Sunday by the Viardots. He has purchased land in Baden and will build a house there (near his beloved Pauline Garcia Viardot). - This important letter is apparently unpublished. In spite of his criticism of Tolstoy in this letter, Turgenev altered his opinion of 'War and Peace' after he read the work in its final revised version in 1866, and he later promoted it extensively in France and Germany.

Autograph letter signed. Croisset, [Jan. 4, 1865].

1865. Large 8vo. 1 p. To Alfred Nion, Flaubert writes for news of his "fairy" play, Le Chateau Des Coeurs; desiring to demonstrate that this old form can be profitably revived, he is nevertheless pessimistic about the sucess of his play: "Eh bien, et la Feerie, cher ami? Je crois que contrairement au proverbe 'pas de nouvelles, bonnes nouvelles' la chose est completement flambée? Mon seuil en est tout fait. J'avais cependant été bien aise de gagner quelques portraits de l'empereur sur metal, avec cette folichonnerie [...] on peut se servir d'un cadre usé [pour] rajeunir un vieux genre. Tu serais bien gentil de me dire ce que ton patron en a pensé". - Dated in the hand of Caroline Commanville, his literary executor; light creasing along old folds.

Autograph letter signed. Burnbank Road, Hamilton, 8. VI. 1865.

1865. 8vo. 3 pp. on double leaf. With one addenda (s. b.). The letter is addressed to Peter Le Neve Foster, Secretary to the Society of Arts, with whom Livingstone corresponded a good deal during this period, asking him to supply samples which give an idea of the papers for the Indian civil service examinations: "[...] Neither of my boys are fit as yet for it but I would like to shew them what is expected one of them got prizes for Geography German French & Latin yesterday and seems likely to go on in these studies - Another got a prize for drawing - I wish to set them to aim high [...]". - Livingstone worries about the future of his surviving sond, while preparing for his final departure for Africa that August. He had been invited to return to Africa by the Royal Geographic Society that January, in order finally to sort out the problem of the Nile. He wrote this letter when staying with his long ailing and bedridden mother. Soon afterwards, thinking that she was rallying, he dashed down to Oxford in order to deliver a lecture, where he received a telegram announcing her death on the eighteenth. He and his wife Mary, who had died in Africa in 1862, had three sons, Robert Moffat Livingstone (1846-64), Thomas Steele Livingstone (1849-76) and William Oswell Livingstone (1851-92). Robert, the eldest, had died of his wounds the previous December, while fighting on the Union side in the American Civil War under the name Rupert Vincent so as not to bring discredit to his father, who was wont to accuse him of trading off his name. In Tim Jeal's opinion, 'Robert's life is really the story of Livingstone's failure as a parent' (Livingstone, Pimlico edition, p. 281). Oswell, the youngest, fell out of favour when in 1872, as a member of the RGS relief expedition that had been upstaged by Stanley, he failed to join his father but instead recommended him to return home, causing his father to dub him 'as poor a specimen of a son as Africa ever produced'. Tom, the middle and eldest surviving son, stayed the course and was to act as his father's chief executor; although it was to be his sister Agnes, Livingstone's doted-upon daughter, who became chief guardian of his reputation. - An album with letters to Foster by Henry Cole and others is included in the lot.

        L'Ange des Enfants

Strasbourg: typographie de G. Silbermann [for] Paris: Humbert, 1865. A large triangular woodcut, printed on a single sheet of thin wove paper measuring 62.3 x 53.6 cm. at its widest points, with a xylographic image of a crowned angel with doll, puppet and toys, framed by architectural elements and flowering garlands, contemporary hand-coloring in red, dark blue, and yellow. Some foxing, some fraying to edges with a couple of short repaired marginal tears, horizontal fold crease, a few other thin creases.*** This colored woodcut, evidently used as a kite, shows an attractive female angel with multicolored wings, delicately holding up a doll in her right hand and a toy soldier in her left hand. Below the doll floats a ball, and below the soldier a drum, sword, and what appears to be a giant wrapped candy (?). The image is framed in a single thick line in the form of a shield with pointed bottom, rounded top edges, and at top center an upside-down V. Spanning the top is a neo-gothic architectural arcade below which curves the title "L'Ange des Enfants" in large caps, and from each end of which descends a thick tendril of flowers and leaves; at the narrow foot of the image is a plinth in the same neo-gothic style. The slightly sloppy coloring, in a rich red and blue and clear yellow, appears to have been applied somewhat hastily by hand rather than through stencils. The two letterpress imprints read "Humbert, rue Saint-Jacuqes 65, à Paris," and "Strasbourg, typographie de G. Silbermann." Gustave Silbermann, who published several albums of type specimens and various kinds of graphic processes (in 1840, 1850 and 1872), was active as a printer from the late 1830s to the early 1870s. A lithograph published by Humbert at the same address in the rue Saint Jacques, with attributed date of 1857, is held by the BnF; other broadsides and an album for children are recorded from the 1850s and 1860. A previous owner's marginal pencil note dates the piece to before 1850, notes its "excessive" rarity, and refers to l'Imagerie Populaire, p. 165. I locate no other copies of this print.

1878, vol.         Autograph letter signed "C. Saint-Saëns," most likely to dramatist Victorien Sardou

Albert Vaguet (1865-1943) did indeed sing Marcomir, the principal tenor role, in the première of Les Barbares, which took place at the Paris Opéra on October 23, 1901. Guillaume Ibos (1860-1952) sang the title role in the first Paris performance of Massenet's opera, Werther in 1893. in 1900, the year before this letter was written, Emilio de Marchi (1861-1917) created the role of Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca. Victorien Sardou (1831-1908) was a prominent French dramatist best known for his historical melodramas and comedies. Opera composers were attracted to his melodramas in particular: Puccini's Tosca, for instance, is based on Sardou's play of the same name. Although he himself did not provide many libretti, he worked closely with Saint-Saëns on Les barbares.. 2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated Paris, August 16, 1901. Decorative initial incorporating a serpent's head and text in black ink on lined paper. In French (with translation). Saint-Saëns discusses the casting of the principal tenor role for the première of his opera, Les barbares. Saint-Saën's correspondent was probably Victorien Sardou, the opera's co-librettist. "[Guillaume] Ibos has stage presence and shines with a lively radiance in loud passages, but sings flat in soft passages... [Emilio de] Marchi, the new Italian phoenix, doesn't sing in French... [Albert] Vaguet will sing wonderfully. As an actor, he's not bad, he's hopeless; but perhaps with your advice we will do something about him because he is full of drive. He is already a favorite with the opera audience." Slightly worn, browned and stained; creased at folds and somewhat overall; short splits to at upper and lower portions of central fold; small edge tears.
