Mapa principal impresso por processo litográfico a cores tridimensional e planificado. Acondicionado em pasta de transporte editorial original da época com rótulo do editor e título de posse manuscrito do Instituto Geológico e Paleontológico de Heidelberga. Exemplar com leve oxidação natural do papel apenas na folha de texto em alemão. O texto bilingue (alemão e inglês) contém a descrição dos estudos preliminares dirigidos por A. T. E Vidal em 1843 publicados pelo Almirantado Britânico. Posteriormente o desenhador Ziegler, de Wintertur, desenhou o relevo montanhoso da Madeira na sua estadia na Ilha em 1853-54 e publicou um mapa de grande escala em 1856. O Ziegler com curvas de nível foi a fonte que serviu ao Dr. Ferd. Mittermaier de Heidelberga para compor um modelo tridimensional, tendo sido com este modelo junto com os mapas anteriores e os seus próprios esboços que permitiram a Mittermeier inventar e produzir - com grande mestria, segundo o editor - um sistema de representação único (em três dimensões planificadas). A representação do relevo da ilha obrigou a produzir um segundo mapa com a descrição topográfica e a orográfica da ilha (que nos nossos dias podemos sobrepor ao relevo numa transparência). Ambos os mapas têm graduações de latitudes e longitudes, e escalas de distâncias em medidas inglesas e alemãs. O texto descreve a orografia da Ilha da Madeira e os seus acidentes geológicos, comparando-os com o relevo das ilhas dos Açores e com as ilhas Canárias; e concluindo que se trata, de entre todas as ilhas conhecidas, aquela que tem uma maior ocorrência de vales de grande relevo geológico. Nota: A utilização de óculos para observação de gravuras a 3 dimensões permitiu-nos verificar que este mapa tem uma rendição tridimensional do seu colorido. A questão da escala aparece associada à questão do relevo e consistiu em exagerar 1,5x as altitudes com o fim de fazer a topografia perceptível, conforme é citado no texto bilingue que acompanha o mapa.       Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1864. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A very good copy rebound in green cloth covered boards with gilt lettered title piece to spine. Covers and backstrip very firm and square with no snags or splits. Contents sound and tight with no inscriptions or bookplates, but showing a number of pages with a few place note marks (though not excessive); also, a couple of leaves roughly opened (no text affected), some other leaves unopened, scattered foxing on just a few pages, and some old handling and fingers marks at the prelims, mostly just at the half-title. This copy isn't from a library and so there no such stamps or labels. Size: 230mm x 150mm; pagination: [vii]-xviii, 447, [1]: blank, 450-452: Appendix A, [1]: Appendix B, and fold-out map in back inside pocket (which is showing just a few minor partings along a couple of the folds). Note: also includes the very rarely found 41 page publisher's catalogue at the rear. Also note: there's very a small blind stamp at the title-page stating: "With the publishers compliments". An important but relatively scarce work.

With two fine engraved portraits as frontispieces of Henry and Charles Montagu, the first Earl and the first Duke of Manchester. 8vo, very finely and handsomely bound at an early time by Riviere and Son, in full royal blue calf, the covers with multi-ruled gilt fillet lines at the borders with circular tools as corner-pieces, the spines richly gilt decorated in panels between gilt ruled and stippled raised bands, two compartments with red morocco labels finely gilt ruled and lettered, gilt tooled turn-ins and board edges, red coated endpapers, t.e.g. Bound in and preserved are the publisher’s original blue cloth spines and upper covers, gilt lettered and featuring the Montagu coat of arms in gilt. 403; 438 pp. A fine and very handsome set, the luxurious calf with only a bit of expected edge wear. SCARCE FIRST EDITION WITH FINE PROVENANCE. VERY HANDSOMELY BOUND. Very fine biographical sketches of the Kings, Queens and important Nobles from the reign of Catherine of Aragon through the last of the Stuart monarchs, Queen Anne. The author was the Seventh Duke of Manchester and had access to papers and materials in his families possession since the time of his ancestor Henry, the first Earl of Manchester and one of the Executors of King Henry VIII’s will. This set is especially handsome in its fine antique binding and has the literary provenance of Pulitzer Prize winning author, Booth Tarkington.

      London: Chapman and Hall, 1864 1st Edition in Parts, as issued. 20 parts, 1-10 in the original green paper wrapper with illustrations and text to front cover, No 1 issue is without the front cover & has the 32 pp of adverts prior to the beginning of the text, the remainder, 11-20 in plain green old wrappers, no title. No 20, has the Volume headings etc. Overall, many pages uncut, plates are generally Very Good, no or very little foxing, some of the wrappers have nicks or may be a little grubby at edges, many of the 11-20 have their covers detached but present except for No 20. A fairly original and rare set of Dickens which have not been bound into the 2 books as is normal. Uncommon in this form!

      Buber writes to the son of his friend Florens Christian Rang (1864-1924), pastor, lawyer and author, identified as a Christian Socialist and whom Buber considered to be a Jurist, philosopher and theologian. In part," I had already heard about you some time ago through Leopold Max. Marxen's live as hard-working settlers in Shave Zin near Naharia. Kratz, who published a series of German poems here over the years lives in Jerusalem...he has a position as a minor official. Benjamin ended in suicide after he had crossed the Franco-Spanish border with a number of others and was told that he would have to return (which later turned out to be false). My help with the highly desirable publication of the literary remains of your father is certainly at the disposal of the editors...As soon as you tell me the time has come, I will have the letters in m possession copied and will send you a copy...In all this time, I have hardly published anything in German, though a series of books in Hebrew, recently also a few things in English. Several volumes are being prepared in English...maybe it will be possible to make a small trip to Germany from Switzerland...." He signs in full, "Martin Buber."

Original white cloth with gilt-stamped spine title and front cover illustration of an M'Ganda warrior saluting. Dark green endpapers. Bookseller's label on front fixed endpaper: ? Wright, Birmingham. Bookbinder's label on back fixed endpaper: Edmonds & Remnants, London. Final 33 unpaginated pages contain publisher's advertisements. The folded map is Map of the Route adopted by Captains Speke & Grant, on their Journey Across Africa from Zanzibar to the Mediterrarean, by A. Keith Johnston (Blackwood, 1864). Ex-library: small embossed stamp of Drew University Library on title page and first unpaginated page (Appendix B), with "Withdrawn" stamped above title page embossed stamp and on p. [xv]; 5-digit number stamped at foot of title page. No other library markings. The author, James Augustus Grant (1827-1892), left Zanzibar with John Hanning Speke in 1860 to seek the sources of the Nile. After they successfully reach Gondokoro, in the southern Sudan, in 1863, he wrote this account of their journey, focusing particularly on matters not included in Speke's geographical and botanical account. Grant drew on the parts of his journal relating to "the ordinary life and pursuits, the habits and feelings of the natives, and the products of the country" [Preface, p. vii]. Very Good Condition: cloth on boards is slightly soiled; rebacked to reproduce the original spine; sensitive repair and restoration to joints and hinges; pp. xvii-xviii (final 2 pages of Explanation of Names and Terms) were lacking and have been supplied on matching aged-toned paper; 2 2-cm. tears from opening of map pocket, without loss; map is intact, with archival strengthening along some folds; detailed conservator's report available on request; edges of first few leaves slightly chipped; slight browning along page edges; otherwise, clean and tight.&

      New York: Probably originally printed in Appleton's Journal, [Ca. 1864-65] - Two very fine engraved blocks, used to illustrate a periodical of the day. Both are well-composed, with numerous figures, and featuring Lee in a central role. The "Prayer Meeting" block is signed "Richardson Sc" [possibly the artist and wood engraver James H. Richardson] in the block; "Petersburg" bears in the block the name of the engraver John Filmer. Filmer did a number of engravings for Appleton's Journal, and that is likely the publication in which this block, and possibly both of them, originally appeared (LEE, ROBERT E) Blocks are each approximately 4-1/4 x 6-5/8 inches and one inch thick. . Together 5 separate-published works and an extract from a review, bound in 1 vol., octavo (213 × 135 mm). Contemporary polished calf, skilfully rebacked with original spine panels and labels laid down, sides panelled in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. With a contemporary albumen photograph of Newman in profile mounted before the text, manuscript contents leaf. Sides a little spotted, tips worn, contents in very good state. First edition of the Apologia, and first editions of the other pamphlets, except Kingsley's, which is a second edition. A unique volume, bound for the printer and publisher William Rivington, with his pencilled ownership inscription on the front free endpaper verso, collecting together the major controversial responses to Newman's Apologia. The albumen photograph portrait, a profile of Newman in his clerical garb without hat, appears to be from his 1866 sitting for the Birmingham photographer Robert White Thrupp; we cannot trace its publication elsewhere. The contents of the volume are all published in London, 1864, and all but (b) and (f) are printed by Gilbert and Rivington: a) NEWMAN, John Henry. Carpenter to the rank of first lieutenant in the Nineteenth Regiment of Infantry in the Union Army. Carpenter survived the Civil War and was promoted to Captain, serving with Philip Sheridan in the Indian wars on the western frontier. With the embossed seal of the War Department and contemporary docketing near the top. Very nice and framed for display.

As an actor he appeared in his friend Charles Dickens's private theatricals at Tavistock House. He was a friend of illustrator George Cruikshank, Wm. Makepeace Thackeray, and many other lights of his day. In short, he stood near the center of London's intellectual circle.Of Hablot K. A very fine and beautiful copy of this superb production. CURMER’S MAGNIFICENT PRODUCTION, A MASTERPIECE OF COLOUR CHROMOLITHOGRAPHY. Curmer had photographed the ancient illuminations which where then colored on the spot. From these he produced the fine chromolithographic plates used to produce this work. The subjects range from the Carolinian Period to the Renaissance. The lavish woodcut borders of the text volume are also designed from originals of the same periods. The use of tipped in photographs within these borders was at the time quite novel and remains very effective. There is also a detailed appendix explaining each of the chromolithographs. This work represents the finest of 19th century printing technology and is a classic, if not the best, example of Curmer’s famed process.

Anderson, James Cooper, Messrs. Dalziel, W.T. Green, William Linton, and many others, all of whom labored mightily in this attempt to reproduce the feel of a 16th-century production. Binding: Signed reddish-brown morocco binding by Root & Son, with covers and spine gilt extra; extremely wide and handsome turn-ins elaborately gilt tooled. Provenance: Front fly-leaf with attractively inked gift inscription to the Rev. John Francis O'Hern, the third Bishop of Rochester, NY, dated 1929. Not in Darlow & Moule. Leather showing small rubbed spots over edges and extremities, with faint leather discoloration to part of front cover; front pastedown with traces of a now-absent bookplate. The weight of this substantial volume has partially cracked the front joint; however, with careful use (and storage on the volume's back, not its lower edge), this damage should not quickly progress. A lavishly produced Victorian New Testament, in a still-impressive binding.

        The Arrival of the Ripon in Southampton, with General Garibaldi and his Suite, April 3rd, 1864

      London: Published Josiah Taylor and Droosten, Allan & Co., 1864. Lithograph in black with a blue tintstone and additional hand-coloring, lithography by Vincent Brooks. 18 3/4 x 28 inches. Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) was, more than any other individual, responsible for the formation of modern Italy out of a patchwork of small principalities and city-states. The decisive phase in the military side of the campaign began with his landing at Marsala on May 11, 1860, which he achieved under the protection of the British Royal Navy. In the ensuing years Garibaldi was never far from the heat of political developments in Italy. He was imprisoned in 1862 for a while; but shortly after his release, he sailed to England to visit London and discuss the situation with members of the government. The lithograph depicts his arrival at Southampton. At the behest of Gladstone, the Prime Minister, Garibaldi - who had a reputation as a rake - was entertained by the controversial dowager Duchess Harriett of Sutherland.

        NORTHERN MISSISSIPPI AND ALABAMA

      [Washington]. 1864.. Single sheet, 25 x 34 inches. Old fold lines; some wear and minor loss at folds, neatly reinforced and repaired with tissue on verso. A few small tears at edges, minor soiling. Very good. A highly detailed map of the northern half of Mississippi and Alabama, showing the border with Tennessee and all points south to Vicksburg and Montgomery, produced to support the operations of the Union Army there in 1864. This is one of several maps compiled by the U.S. Coast Survey in an attempt to adequately map the South during the Civil War for military purposes. A note on the map indicates that the present map was compiled from various sources, including "campaign maps and information furnished by Capt. O.M. Poe, Chief Engineer, Military Division of the Mississippi, and by Capt. W.E. Merrell, Chief Engineer, Department of the Cumberland." Merrill was Sherman's chief topographical engineer, and he contributed to several important maps of the area, including one of Northern Georgia produced in Chattanooga following the vital capture of that city. With the beginning of the Civil War the United States Army found itself scrambling to obtain adequate field maps for military operations in the South. The most established cartographic branch of the Government, the Coast Survey, was pressed into service to provide these maps, some with a coastal component but mainly for landlocked locations. The cartographers of the Coast Survey reviewed all of the existing cartography available, but also drew on military and scouting reports and covert agents to assemble to most detailed possible maps detailing places, roads, railroads, natural features. The topography is illustrated with hachured and shaded relief, and railroads shown in red. The circulation of these maps was controlled, and only officers ranking major or higher were supposed to control copies. As a result, they are rare today. Two key figures in the Coast Survey effort during the War were Henry Lindenkohl and his brother Adolph, who were responsible for actually drawing many of the field maps. The Lindenkohls were born in Germany, but emigrated to the United States as teenagers and became American citizens. Adolph had already worked at the Coast Survey before the War began, and Henry joined in 1861. Together they made a huge contribution to the war effort through their superb cartographic work, producing and revising maps of different theatres of operations through 1865. Both continued with the survey for the rest of their lives; Adolph died in 1904 after fifty years on the job, and Henry in 1920 after fifty-nine. An important map of Northern Mississippi and Alabama, particularly interesting as part of the greater project undertaken by the Coast Survey to map out the South during the Civil War.

Little appears to be known about Munday except his address, listed as "Calle de Los Huerfanos, N. 34, Frente al Pasaje Bulnes." The pictures show both pastoral scenes and stately homes, coupled with industrial development, coal mining, and shipping. The images are captioned as follow: 1) [Portrait of a man standing, presumably the author]. 2) "Lota Alta." 3) "Capilla de Lota." 4) "Las Casas desde El Parque." 5) "El Puente de Chambeque." 6) "Lota El Muelle desde La Punta de Lota." 7) "Astillero de Lota." 8) "Hornos de Fundicion, de Ladrillos Parte del Muelle de Lota." 9) "Lota Baja desde El Camino Viejo a Colcura." 10) "Vista de Coronel."       Fort Erie: 1 February, 1864. Reference: Lande, John Law: The Evolution of his System, # 104. Very Good/Thomson purchased the Fort Erie Railroad Company (formerly Samuel Zimmerman's Erie and Ontario Railroad) in 1862. Here he writes to potentates of the Great Western concerning the relationship of "our two roads--your large one and our little one!" He projects that his line from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Fort Erie will be open for business by July 1, 1864. "I am in hopes that by the same time the Atlantic and Great Western will touch the Niagara River within Buffalo just opposite the Depot of the Erie & Niagara." He is attempting to establish a connection between the U.S. railroads and his own Canadian lines, creating a sea outlet for Midwestern grains and coal to Europe from Niagara-on-the-Lake. He details the need for a connector in Buffalo and a bridge or ferry across the Niagara River. At the same time, he suggests that the railroads should collectively build new hotels at Niagara Falls on the Canadian side, to take advantage of the resulting increase in tourism. THE RAREST AND DEAREST OF THE TWO BOOKS PENNED BY JOHN SPEKE AFTER HIS TRAVELS INTO THE LAKE REGIONS OF AFRICA AND THIS, THE NARRATION OF THE HIGHLY IMPORTANT JOURNEY WITH RICHARD FRANCIS BURTON. This work is composed of two parts, the "Journal of Adventures in Somali Land," and the "Journal of a Cruise on the Tanganyika Lake." Speke had apparently, at the end of the Punjab campaign in 1849, developed the idea to explore Central Africa with a view to collecting hitherto unknown species of fauna. At the same time the Bombay government was organizing an expedition to Somaliland under Lieutenant Richard Burton. Speke had originally planned to travel into Africa alone--a very unwise proposal--and James Outram, the political resident at Aden, at first forbid him. Outram then suggested that Speke join Burton's expedition, which he did. It was during this expedition that Speke claimed to have discovered the true source of the Nile, but Burton and his associate, James Macqueen, immediately disputed his claims. Speke was granted command of a second expedition in 1860 to explore the Victoria Nyanza and verify his earlier findings. In the years 1863 and 1864 Speke published, respectively, JOURNAL OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE and this book, WHAT LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE. Despite the confusing titles, the "Journal" actually covers his second expedition, with James Grant, while "What Led To" narrates his first journey in the company of Burton.

        Un Buffet de Chemin de Fer / Railway Refreshment Room

      Paris: Dusacq & Cie. Editeurs, 1864. Hand-coloured lithograph after a painting by Droz. Very good condition apart from some light soiling, two skillfully repaired small tears in the top and right margins, and an expertly mended loss in the lower part of the image. 19 1/4 x 23 1/4 inches. 20 1/4 x 26 inches. A beautifully coloured, humorous plate that was most likely part of a series published by Dusacq of images by various artists depicting railway related scenes. During the mid-nineteenth century, the technological advancement and financial prosperity of France under Napoleon III hastened the development of the railway and other modern modes of transportation such as the omnibus. These improvements brought about a culture of mass tourism, as members of various classes flocked to the railroad to take day trips. An archetypal symbol of modern life, the railway station became a popular subject during the period and was represented by artists such as Honoré Daumier and William Powell Frith. It was an ideal place to observe a varied cross-section of society and the comical idiosyncrasies of human behavior. In addition to being a place where one purchased refreshments while awaiting one's train, the railway buffet, as emphasized in this print, became a popular social venue for men and women. Born in 1832, the artist and author Antoine Gustave Droz was the son of the renowned sculptor Jules-Antoine Droz. In 1851, he studied with Picot at the École des Beaux-Arts and exhibited several works at the Salon beginning in 1857. He was primarily a genre painter, and a collection of his witty drawings illustrating family life were published in the satiric weekly magazine Vie Parisienne before being issued as a very well received book entitled Monsieur, Madame et Bébê in 1866. Despite his artistic training, Droz began to focus on his literary career after his initial success and became a well respected author of numerous novels including Entre nous (1867), Autour d'une source (1869), Un Pacquet de letters (1870), and L'Enfant (1885). Many of his books were esteemed for their humorous nature, and this comical element is also evident in several of his early paintings such as Un Buffet de Chemin de Fer on which this plate is based. A FINE 19TH CENTURY COLLECTION OF SHAKESPEARE’S PLAYS, ILLUSTRATED THROUGHOUT AND HANDSOMELY BOUND. This collection is considered one of the principle and most important collections for its time. The editors, Charles and Mary Cowden Clarke, are recognized as authorities on Shakespeare and had edited, critiqued and published Shakespeare for years. With their preface and life in Vol. III. Each volume has a quote from Shakespeare on the title page: “‘Forewarn him that he use no scurrilous words in his tunes” which the editors use to justify the modifying of coarse and objectionable language. They also remark that in their notes, they have emphasized the poetic perspective of Shakespeare more than other editors. Similarly they have illuminated the physical indications of those with mental suffering in his works, “intrinsic evidences” of his style at various epochs of his career, and their perspectives of the role of gender in his work. A fascinating collection.

      London: Bradbury and Evans,, May 1864–April 1865. 12 monthly parts. Original dark orange wrappers printed in black. Housed in a brown cloth folding case. 24 hand-coloured plates. Ads to volumes VII, VIII, IX, and XI. Contemporary ownership inscriptions to upper wrappers of volumes XI, X, and XI. Wrappers lightly rubbed with some chips and wear to the ends of the spines. An excellent set. First edition in the original monthly parts. Surtees's (1805–64) novels revolve around British field sports, and his "sharp, authentic descriptions of the hunting field have retained their popularity among fox-hunters" and, "his mordant observations on men, women, and manners; his entertaining array of eccentrics, rakes, and rogues; his skill in the construction of lively dialogue (a matter over which he took great pains); his happy genius for unforgettable and quotable phrases… have won him successive generations of devoted followers" (ODNB). This novel, published posthumously, is considered his best work.

Most orders reflect the general nature of administering an army. assignments, court martials, etc. Though that said, a couple I note with interest. No. 260, 21 September 1864, revises payment processes for job printing. No. 296, 2 December 1864, concerns "stores and school-books" for freedmen. Nos. 128, 232, 233, & 302 are Proclamations by Abraham Lincoln, with No. 232 suspending writ of habeas corpus in Kentucky.         Runde Strasse in Peking [Pl. 29]

      Berlin: Verlag von Georg Stilke, circa 1864. Colour-printed lithograph by R. Steinbock, after Hildebrandt, cut to the image edge and mounted on card as issued. Very good condition apart from some light soiling and minor foxing in the margins. 10 7/8 x 15 inches. 17 7/8 x 21 3/4 inches. A charming atmospheric street scene in Peking, from Hildebrandt's illustrated survey of his world travels "Reise um die Erde (Journey Around the Earth)." Born in Gdansk, Hildebrandt was a pupil of the marine painter Wilhelm Kreuse (1803-64) and also studied watercolour painting in the Paris studio of Eugène Isabey for six months. After returning to Berlin in 1843, he met Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1855), who introduced him to Frederik William IV. The latter commissioned him to paint Rio de Janeiro in 1844. On his return, he explored the rest of South America and visited Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Hildebrandt was evidently keen on travel, as he also made numerous journeys to many of the Mediterranean countries, Asia Minor, India, China, Japan and across the Pacific. During his voyages, he drew a number of open-air studies in watercolour, a large selection of which were published in 1871-74 by R. Wagner as a collection of chromolithographs entitled "Reise um die Erde." The illustrations were lithographed by R. Steinbock and accompanied by descriptive text by R. Weisse. The present image depicting a bustling thoroughfare in the cosmopolitan city of Peking is most likely from a sketch Hildebrandt executed during his tour of 1862 to 1864. Cf.       (Boston: Prang, L., & Co., c. 1864). 12mo. (16)pp. A shaped book illustrated throughout by chromolithography. The illustrations surround the central text, which is a retelling of the story of Robinson Crusoe in verse by Lydia L. Very, who also designed the book. This title was part of the "Doll Series" of shaped books published by Prang, which were "among the first publications of L. Prang & Company." McClinton writes that these books are "some of the most interesting and fascinating items Prang published," going on to say that "today these books are valuable items for the collector of children's books." Light wrinkling to covers, else fine in shaped pictorial wrappers.
