Jefferson Davis authorizes his aide to mount a daring raid on the Union P.O.W. camp at Point Lookout, Maryland to free and arm Confederate prisoners

Richmond, July 4, 1864. 7.75" x 7.25". "A most cryptic and important Autograph Letter (unsigned), 1 page, 7.75"" x 7.25"", Richmond, July 4, 1864 to his aide-de-camp, Col. John T. Wood, authorizing him to undertake ""the distant service to which you have been assigned..."" Lightly toned at corners, else fine condition.Davis' letter reads in full: ""Sir, You will proceed to execute the orders and instructions otherwise communicated to you in connection with the distant service to which you have been assigned. You will use your discretion in the modification of your orders as circumstances may require and may our heavenly Father inspire you with wisdom and crown your efforts with success.""With the situation rapidly deteriorating on the Southern home front as Grant's army pushed relentlessly toward Richmond, Davis chose to undertake several risky operations to both boost Confederate morale and dampen the reelection prospects for President Lincoln that fall. One of the measures was a planned expedition to the Union prisoner of war camp established at Point Lookout, Maryland, located at the confluence of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. The plan, which was co-commanded by G.W. Custis Lee and John Taylor Wood, was to lead a detachment from Jubal Early's army, who were then advancing north into the Shenandoah Valley to make an attempt on Washington. Wood was to secure two steamers at Wilmington, North Carolina capable of capturing the Union gunboats guarding Point Lookout. Davis also ordered that Wood secure arms to distribute to the freed prisoners so they could join in Early's planned attack on Washington. However by July 10, it had become obvious to Davis that the plan had been compromised and instead ordered that he take command of the converted blockade runner, Atlanta, re-christened as the C.S.S. Tallahassee, to raid Union shipping along the eastern seaboard. Wood commenced his cruise on August 4, 1864. By the time he reached Halifax, he had captured thirty-three Union vessels. John Taylor Wood (1830-1904) , the son of Union General Robert Wood and Anne Taylor, the daughter of President Zachary Taylor, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1852. Initially maintaining a neutral stance following the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, his sympathies headed South after the Battle of Fort Sumter. On April 21, 1861, he resigned his commission in the U.S. Navy and retired to his Maryland farm. The farming life did not last long, however, as life was becoming too dangerous. Fearing for the safety of his family, the Woods moved south to Richmond, Virginias where his uncle, Jefferson Davis, was now presiding over the Confederate capital (Jefferson Davis' first wife, Sarah Taylor, was Wood's mother's sister). In October 1861, Taylor received a commission as a lieutenant in the Confederate States Navy and became an officer aboard the C.S.S. Virginia (the former U.S.S. Merrimack) and fought against he U.S.S. Monitor at the Battle of Hampton Roads. Wood commanded the rear pivot gun and fired the shot that wounded the Monitor's captain. Appointed an aide-de-camp to President Jefferson Davis, Wood was awarded the rank and pay of a colonel of cavalry, giving him simultaneous commands in both the Confederate Army and Navy allowing him to serve as an effective liaison between the services and the government in Richmond. In that capacity, Wood undertook an extensive survey of Confederate costal defenses. During the summer of 1863, he led a series of successful raids against Union shipping in Chesapeake Bay. In the summer of 1864, Wood commanded the C.S.S. Tallahassee, a raider and blockade runner. During his tenure aboard the Tallahassee, he captured an astounding 33 Union ships during a ten-day period off the coast of New England. By April 1865, the situation looked grim for the Confederacy. Wood was with his uncle on April 2, attending St. Paul's Church in Richmond, when a telegram from Lee arrived informing the president that Petersburg would soon fall and the government must evacuate. That evening, he, Davis, and other members of the Confederate government boarded a train for Danville, Virginia. They continued their flight south, where, on May 10, 1865, near the town of Irwinsville, Georgia, Davis and Wood were both captured by Union forces. Wood soon made his escape, with his uncle's permission, by bribing one of his captors and hiding in a nearby swamp until the Federals and their prisoners left the area. Wood made his way south to Florida and met up with Major General John C. Breckinridge. Acquiring a small boat, Wood, Breckinridge, and several other men first attempted to row east to The Bahamas, but abandoned the plan and decided to instead make their way south toward Cuba. He managed to trade with a crew of Union deserters his boat for their slightly bigger sloop. They reached the north shore of Cuban on June 10. He remained in Cuba for two weeks before heading north to Canada, where his family soon joined him. Reunited, they settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and remained there for the rest of their lives. John Taylor Wood died on July 19, 1904. "

MDCCC LXIV [1864]. De 27x21 cm. Com 201-(i) pags. Rare Lincoln 1864 Presidential Campaign Newspaper

Reading, PA 1864 - Newspaper. Father Abraham. Reading, PA: October 4, 1864. Vol 1, No 10. 4 pp., 17 3/4 x 11 3/4 in. The 1864 election was one of the most important in American history. When some of his advisors suggested postponing or cancelling the vote because of the war, Lincoln responded: "We can not have free government without elections; and if the rebellion could force us to forego, or postpone a national election it might fairly claim to have already conquered and ruined us." However, Lincoln's reelection was an uphill struggle. No president had won a second term since Andrew Jackson in 1832, and Lincoln faced a challenge from his former general George McClellan, running as a Democrat on a peace platform, and John C. Frémont, who's campaign was off to a strong start. Lincoln's defeat would have surely led to a negotiated settlement with the Confederacy, dividing the union and giving slavery increased resonance in the South. Fortunately for Lincoln, William T. Sherman took Atlanta on September 2, 1864, showing that Northern victory was ahead. Frémont withdrew three weeks later, reasoning that Northern winning the war was more important than splitting the Republican vote. The masthead reads "Liberty and Union-One and Inseparable-Now and Forever." Reporting news from Lincoln's and a number of other campaigns of the National Union Ticket, the moniker adopted by the Republican Party for the 1864 election. Though it was founded in 1864 to promote Lincoln's re-election, Father Abraham continued publication until 1873.ConditionA few small chips to top edge, minor tear to third column of p. 3, old folding creases. Contemporary ownership signature "G.D. Hunsecker" on p. 1.

IN THE DISTRICT COURT, FIRST JUDICIAL DISTRICT, STOREY COUNTY, NEVADA TERRITORY. GOULD & CURRY SILVER MINING Co., PLAINTIFF, vs. NORTH POTOSI GOLD AND SILVER MINING CO. DEFENDANT. OPINION OF REFEREE, AUGUST 22, 1864

Virginia, N.T.: Goodman & M'Carty, Printers, 1864. Original printed wrappers. Vertical fold. Wrappers and upper margin of several leaves with some smoke damage, not affecting text. Good. A scarce, early, and significant Nevada imprint, giving referee John Nugent's decision in this important mining case. Plaintiff Gould & Curry Silver Mining Company brought an "action of trespass" suit against the North Potosi Gold and Silver Mining Company, arguing that the North Potosi claim, adjacent to its own, was actually a spur of the plaintiff's established vein. After a protracted and costly legal battle, the courts appointed Nugent to review the case and prepare an impartial recommendation. His report on the geological characteristics of the Comstock Lode, and subsequent conclusion in favor of the plaintiff, formed the basis for the court's final decision in favor of Gould & Curry. Because of the importance of the case, Nugent's report was printed almost immediately in San Francisco and Virginia City newspapers prior to this first pamphlet publication. Streeter notes that it was "a case of such importance in its day that each side argued, quite improperly as pointed out by the referee, that an adverse decision 'would be seriously detrimental to if not destructive of the prosperity of the District.'" "A fundamental document of Nevada legal lore" - Eberstadt. Not in the Nevada AMERICAN IMPRINTS INVENTORY. ARMSTRONG 203. STREETER SALE 2326. EBERSTADT 165:562.

THE KANSAS ANNUAL REGISTER FOR THE YEAR 1864. PUBLISHED BY THE STATE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY

Leavenworth: Printed at the Bulletin Job Printing Establishment, 1864. Contemporary three-quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt leather labels. Boards quite rubbed and worn, front board nearly detached. Very clean and fresh internally; with the map in excellent condition, save for a two-inch closed tear in the gutter. In a calf-backed clamshell case, spine gilt. A wonderful 19th-century digest of Kansas history and statistics, with a very rare and detailed map of Kansas which was apparently not issued with all copies. The text describes Kansas government offices, land surveys in Kansas, topography, school system, churches, military posts, etc. There is an account of Quantrill's raid on Aug. 21, 1863, as well as a brief descriptive section on each county and a table of agricultural products. The portraits are of important Kansas figures: Thomas Carney, Thomas Ewing, James G. Blunt, James H. Lane, George W. Deitzler, and A.C. Wilder. Though the title implies later annual publications, this is the only one issued. Andrew Stark, the editor, was the publisher of the TOPEKA TRIBUNE. The large folding map of Kansas, compiled by D.T. Mitchell and actually printed in Pittsburgh, is usually missing. It is entitled "Kansas Annual Register's New Map of Kansas and the Gold Mines Embracing All the Public Surveys Up to 1864." The primary map is quite detailed, showing all of the eastern half of the present state of Kansas. A large inset, occupying the bottom section of the map, shows the routes to the Colorado gold mines, indicating the trails across Kansas and the eastern section of Colorado. Mitchell worked with the cartographer, O.B. Gunn, who had prepared maps of Kansas as early as 1856, in creating this map. Not in Howes or in the Graff or Streeter collections. The combination of the map's having been printed in Pittsburgh and the book's publication in Kansas during the Civil War makes this is a very rare item. AII (KANSAS) 422. SABIN 37051. DARY, KANZANA 101 (copy inspected lacked map). EBERSTADT 137:588 (lacking map).

        Haggadah Shel Pesah

1864 - (HAGGADAH). Seder Ha-Haggadah Shel Pesah Im Tziyurim. Hugah B’iyun Nimratz Me’et Abraham Hai Morpurgo. Trieste: Jonah Cohen, 1864. Folio (9-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches), 20th-century half vellum; pp. [1], 42, [1]. $5200.Beautifully and richly illustrated Haggadah printed in Trieste, with elaborately engraved Gothic title page depicting Moses, Aaron, David and Solomon, and with 58 splendid wood engravings by C. Kirchmayr (almost one on every page).“The Trieste Haggadah is undoubtedly the most distinguished illustrated edition produced in Europe during the 19th century. As the engraved title page already indicates, the Haggadah is different in format and design from any that preceded it, no mean achievement in an age when the Venetian and Amsterdam Haggadah illustrations were being copied and recopied in seemingly endless succession. Almost every page contains a large engraving above the text, drawn by C. Kirchmayr. Though inspired by the iconographic themes of the past, the Trieste engravings are not a mere aping of the stereotypes then current, but display a welcome freshness of design… A scene showing the family around the Seder table had been a standard feature of almost all illustrated Haggadahs. As certain influential Haggadahs began to be copied later, the representation of the Seder became increasingly anachronistic… [However,] in the Trieste Haggadah the artist has clearly set out to present a middle-class Italian Jewish family of his own time. Not only are the men and women dressed in the current style, but each of them exhibits an individuality rarely encountered before” (Yerushalmi 102-105). The ultimate leaf contains the musical notes for Adir Hu, Adir Bimlukha, and Ehad Mi Yodeyah. Yaari 898. Yudlov 1216. Pencil and ink annotations in several hands.Occasional light staining characteristic of ceremonial use; minor paper repairs. An extremely good copy, attractively bound.

CANADA AND PACIFIC TELEGRAPH. RETURN TO AN ADDRESS OF THE HONOURABLE THE HOUSE OF COMMONS, DATED 10 MAY 1846; - FOR, "COPY OF EXTRACTS OF ANY CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN THE COLONIAL OFFICE AND THE AUTHORITIES IN CANADA AND BRITISH COLUMBIA, ON THE SUBJECT OF THE PROPOSED TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION BETWEEN CANADA AND THE PACIFIC

[London, 1864. Folio. String-tied, as issued. A bit tanned, some small chips at the edges. Very good. The Thomas W. Streeter copy, with his pencil notes on the titlepage. This House of Commons working paper is a continuation of their return dated July 10, 1863, on the subject of constructing a telegraph line to British Columbia and the Pacific. The Hudson's Bay Company, unsurprisingly, was intimately involved in the machinations for the building of the line. They had made an agreement with the Canadian government to build the telegraph line from the Red River to the Pacific themselves, but when they failed to do so, a group of English bankers proposed to step in and do the job. The papers included herein provide much information on the qualities of the land between Lake Superior and British Columbia, and the need for swift communication throughout and across the vast region. Also included is a memorial from the people of the Red River Settlement, discussing their urgent need for the telegraph.

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Henri Mouhot [May 15, 1826 -November 10, 1861] was a French naturalist and explorer of the mid-19th century. He was born in Montbéliard France. * Mouhot is often mistakenly credited with "discovering" Angkor, although Angkor was never lost the location and existence of the entire series of Angkor sites was always known to the Khmers and had been visited by several westerners since the 16th century. Mouhot mentions in his journals that his contemporary, Father Charles Emile Bouillevaux, a French missionary based in Battambang who had reported that he and other western explorers and missionaries had visited Angkor Wat and the other Khmer temples, at least five years before Mouhot. Father Bouillevaux published his accounts in 1857: "Travel in Indochina 1848-1846, The Annam and Cambodia". Previously, a Portuguese trader Diogo do Couto visited Angkor and wrote his accounts about it in 1550, and the Portuguese monk Antonio da Magdalena had also written about his visit to Angkor Wat in 1586. * Mouhot did however popularize Angkor in the West. Perhaps none of the previous European visitors wrote as evocatively as Mouhot, who included interesting and detailed sketches. In his posthumously published "Travels in Siam, Cambodia and Laos" Mouhot compared Angkor to the pyramids, for it was popular in the west at that time to ascribe the origin of all civilization to the Middle East. For example, he described the Buddha heads at the gateways to Angkor Thom as "four immense heads in the Egyptian style," and wrote of Angkor: * Mouhot also wrote: "At Ongcor, there are ...ruins of such grandeur... that, at the first view, one is filled with profound admiration, and cannot but ask what has become of this powerful race, so civilized, so enlightened, the authors of these gigantic works?"       Kyoto 1864, Izumo. Stitched buff wrs., very good, 17 x 26 cm. complete in 1 volume, [22+3] double-folded leaves, 37 pages. of woodblock illustrations, woodblock printed on hand-made. mulberry paper, very clean, minor old worming, but solid.. AN EARLY TREATISE ON ACUPUNCTURE POINTS, TECHNIQUES & MOXA This excellent illustrated resource shows a wide variety of good views to the human anatomy and where the vital acupun- ture and moxa "points" are located. Giving details of exact measurements for locating the "points". Measurement of the "points" are based on a the 2nd digit of the left middle finger and called "Issun" and form the basis for all other measurements per the book. The spinal column, head & facial "points," hand, arm, rib cage, neck, foot, leg, thigh, fing- ers, shoulder, low back & hip areas are carefully illustrat- ed & addressed with all "points" noted, along with what ail- ments are relieved by treatment. This work was influenced by its Chinese physicians and is written in Kambun a form of old Chinese used by the Japanese, with Furigana sounds to give meaning for Japanese readers. A useful reference and text for Japanese physicians and students of acupuncture and moxa [artemisia vulgaris latifolia]. Moxa was also dampened then formed on the end of needles already inserted in the body. Then when dried, were lit to provide additional heat and stimulus to the "point" for maximum results. Moxa was also burned in small lumps on various parts on the body to stimulate "points" & on occasion was burned after placing a small slab of garlic on the body on the "point," then apply- ing the moxa above that. Imamura [1814-1890] was a clebrated physician & medical author, and is cited in Mestler on pages 169 & 297 and also lists his other titles. For additional & useful discussion of this topic, see G. Mestler: A GALAXY OF OLD MEDICAL BOOKS IN JAPAN, pp.468-480 et al. The first pub- lished writing on moxa was written T. Watare: KWANREI SOKYU SHINSHO SHINSHO in 1534, and layed down the basis for all future works on the subject. Scans can be sent by email.         UN PASEO A LOTA

Valparaiso, 1864. Half title. Quarto. Contemporary blue cloth, blindstamped cover, ornate gilt spine. Minute wear to extremities. Minor foxing. Contemporary publisher's label on front pastedown. Plates are quite clean overall. Very good. A charming tour through Lota, Chile. This copy bears an inscription on the verso of the front fly leaf from L. Cousiño, who wrote the introduction, dated at Santiago, December 1, 1864. This volume is most important for its original albumen prints taken by photographer Jorge Munday. Little appears to be known about Munday except his address, listed as "Calle de Los Huerfanos, N. 34, Frente al Pasaje Bulnes."         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1864 - 1864 Wisden Original Wrappers Exceptional Condition

1864. This 1864 Wisden is probably the finest Wisden that I have ever offered for sale. The book is entirely original and in quite exceptional condition. I've added a large number of photographs to illustrate the book. The book has had no restoration whatsoever and is entirely original. As can be seen from the photographs, the front and rear wrappers are flat and unmarked. There is a tiny chip to the bottom left hand corner of the rear wrapper. The spine is complete and has the year ""1864"" in ink to the spine. There is an ownership signature to the top of the front wrapper. The contents are complete, original and unmarked and in fine condition. I have shown this book to a couple of other Wisden dealers. Both expressed the view that this was the best 1864 that they had seen. It would be the cornerstone of any serious Wisden collection. The book will be fully insured in transit and obviously packed to a professional standard.
