        UN PASEO A LOTA

Valparaiso, 1864. Half title. Quarto. Contemporary blue cloth, blindstamped cover, ornate gilt spine. Minute wear to extremities. Minor foxing. Contemporary publisher's label on front pastedown. Plates are quite clean overall. Very good. A charming tour through Lota, Chile. This copy bears an inscription on the verso of the front fly leaf from L. Cousiño, who wrote the introduction, dated at Santiago, December 1, 1864. This volume is most important for its original albumen prints taken by photographer Jorge Munday. Little appears to be known about Munday except his address, listed as "Calle de Los Huerfanos, N. 34, Frente al Pasaje Bulnes." The pictures show both pastoral scenes and stately homes, coupled with industrial development, coal mining, and shipping. The images are captioned as follows: 1) [Portrait of a man standing, presumably the author]. 2) "Lota Alta." 3) "Capilla de Lota." 4) "Las Casas desde El Parque." 5) "El Puente de Chambeque." 6) "Lota El Muelle desde La Punta de Lota." 7) "Astillero de Lota." 8) "Hornos de Fundicion, de Ladrillos Parte del Muelle de Lota." 9) "Lota Baja desde El Camino Viejo a Colcura." 10) "Vista de Coronel." The text includes a biographical sketch of the prominent Don Matias Cousiño, a general overview of the region, a profile of local coal mines, and more. Extremely early examples of South American photographica. Quite rare. Not in Palau nor THE TRUTHFUL LENS.... OCLC locates only four copies, at the Library of Congress, Harvard, the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and the National Library of Chile.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1864 - 1864 Wisden Original Wrappers Exceptional Condition

1864. This 1864 Wisden is probably the finest Wisden that I have ever offered for sale. The book is entirely original and in quite exceptional condition. I've added a large number of photographs to illustrate the book. The book has had no restoration whatsoever and is entirely original. As can be seen from the photographs, the front and rear wrappers are flat and unmarked. There is a tiny chip to the bottom left hand corner of the rear wrapper. The spine is complete and has the year ""1864"" in ink to the spine. There is an ownership signature to the top of the front wrapper. The contents are complete, original and unmarked and in fine condition. I have shown this book to a couple of other Wisden dealers. Both expressed the view that this was the best 1864 that they had seen. It would be the cornerstone of any serious Wisden collection. The book will be fully insured in transit and obviously packed to a professional standard.

Magnificent pair of views of Big Tree Grove, near Yosemite

Weed 1864 - Two mammoth albumen prints. These beautiful photographs were both formerly affixed back-to-back with another mounted photograph, giving a very faint linen-like texture on the surface. Thin strip of linen tape on mounts. These are splendid prints with rich tonal range, worthy of the finest collections. Weed, Charles Leander. The Sentinels, Big Tree Grove. 1864. Mammoth albumen print (20 ½ x 16 in.), mounted. Weed, Charles Leander. The Original Big Tree, 32 feet diameter. 1864. Mammoth albumen print (15 ½ x 20 in.), mounted. CALIFORNIA PHOTOGRAPHY PIONEER. Charles Leander Weed is generally considered the first photographer to work in Yosemite. His 1859 trip there yielded approximately twenty 10 x 14 inch views and forty stereo images. For his 1864 photographic expedition to the Yosemite Valley and the Big Trees of Calaveras, Weed used a larger camera to produce these splendid mammoth-plate prints (more than twice the size of the 1859 views), as well as a new series of stereo views. Weed exhibited his mammoth prints at the 1867 Paris International Exposition. Lawrence & Houseworth’s 1870 Catalogue offered them for sale and observed, “This series of views, together with the stereoscopic collection, were awarded the bronze medal at the Paris Exposition, for their superior excellence.” Relatively little is known about Weed, who “remains a shadowy presence” (Palmquist). In addition to working in San Francisco, he established studios in China and Hawaii. His greatest accomplishment was his series of mammoth plate photographs of the Yosemite Valley and the Big Trees of Calaveras made in 1864. His photographs of the giant sequoias are especially noteworthy as they capture the magnificence and scale of the great trees. The Sentinels, Big Tree Grove. “The ‘Sentinels,’ about 50 feet in circumference, and 275 feet high, stand guard at the entrance of the grove, like giants at the portal of an enchanted palace; and between them, with head uncovered, you pass into this grand temple of nature” (Kneeland, Wonders of the Yosemite Valley, and of California, 1872). The Original Big Tree shows the first giant sequoia to come to the attention of white Americans. Discovered by Augustus P. Dowd in 1852 in the Mammoth Grove of Calaveras, it was cut down the following year. Five men felled the tree after three weeks of work using only mining augurs. The bark was then assembled into the tree’s original form for a traveling exhibit. The colossal stump of the “Discovery Tree” was planed and briefly used as a dance floor. This image shows a section of the trunk lying next to the domed building covering the stump. A splendid pair of Big Tree photographs by the pioneering Western photographer Charles Weed.

        Runde Strasse in Peking

Berlin: Verlag von Georg Stilke, 1864. Colour-printed lithograph by R. Steinbock, after Hildebrandt, cut to the image edge and mounted on card as issued. Very good condition apart from some light soiling and minor foxing in the margins. A charming atmospheric street scene in Peking, from Hildebrandt's illustrated survey of his world travels "Reise um die Erde (Journey Around the Earth)." Born in Gdansk, Hildebrandt was a pupil of the marine painter Wilhelm Kreuse (1803-64) and also studied watercolour painting in the Paris studio of Eugène Isabey for six months. After returning to Berlin in 1843, he met Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1855), who introduced him to Frederik William IV. The latter commissioned him to paint Rio de Janeiro in 1844. On his return, he explored the rest of South America and visited Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Hildebrandt was evidently keen on travel, as he also made numerous journeys to many of the Mediterranean countries, Asia Minor, India, China, Japan and across the Pacific. During his voyages, he drew a number of open-air studies in watercolour, a large selection of which were published in 1871-74 by R. Wagner as a collection of chromolithographs entitled "Reise um die Erde." The illustrations were lithographed by R. Steinbock and accompanied by descriptive text by R. Weisse. The present image depicting a bustling thoroughfare in the cosmopolitan city of Peking is most likely from a sketch Hildebrandt executed during his tour of 1862 to 1864. Cf. Thieme/Becker, Allgemeines Lexicon der bilden Künstler , vol 17/18, p. 74-5.

Panorama of the Seat of War. Birds Eye View of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia

New York: Charles Magnus, 1864. Chromolithograph, by Bachmann. Small expert repairs to tears. Third state of this fascinating quasi-aerial view of the northernmost part of the east coast of the Confederacy, and the southernmost areas of the Union, including Washington: this third issue, printed after the smoke that was added to Manassas for the second issue had been removed again, has "many towns and battlefields ... added, especially around Richmond, Petersburg, and Fredericksburg" (Rumsey). 'At the outset of the Civil War, John Bachmann, of New York City, one of the finest American artists and lithographers specializing in bird's-eye views, began producing a series of panoramas of likely theaters of War' (Stephenson & McKee Virginia in Maps p.239). This view, taken from the apparent vantage point some miles up in the outer atmosphere, was designed to serve as an individual stand-alone image (as here), but also to join with two other views by Bachmann which together form one continuous panorama of the east coast of the Confederacy. In all, Bachmann published six views covering the whole 'Seat of the War'. The present image covers an area which includes the locations of a number of well-known Civil War actions: Harper's Ferry, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania, Manassas, Petersburg and Appomattox River, Richmond and environs. John Bachmann was one of America's leading viewmakers, having been responsible for some of the finest New York City views. This innovative cross between view and map appears to have been his own invention, and it gives an intriguing and different perspective on the conflict. The first state of this view was published by Bachmann in 1861, the second state was published with smoke billowing up from Manassas in reference to the Battle of Bull Run; the present third edition was published by Charles Magnus in 1864, the battlefield smoke having been removed. Cf. Stephenson Civil War Maps (1989) 2 & 3 (1st and 2nd states); cf. Stephenson & McKee Virginia in Maps p.239 (2nd state); Rumsey 2817 ; cf. Reps p.160 ('No finer artist of city views worked in America than John Bachmann").

[St. Leger. Passing the Judges' Stand] Doncaster Races. To the Noblemen and Gentlemen of the Turf and the Subscribers to the Great St. Leger Stakes, this print representing the Horses passing the Judges Stand, is most respectfully dedicated by their Obedient and most obliged Servants, S. and J. Fuller

London: S. & J. Fuller, 1864. Aquatint, printed in colours and finished by hand, by R.W. Smart and C. Hunt. A fine image of the horses passing the judges' stand, heading toward the finish "Passing the Judges' Stand" is a pair with "The Horses Starting for the Great St. Leger.." (#18678) The St Leger, known world wide as the oldest classic turf race, was first entitled 'A sweepstake of 25 guineas' and was not given its present name until 3 years later. It was first run on 25 September 1776, as a sweepstake of 2 miles on Cantley Common in Doncaster. (Colts to carry 8 stone and fillies 7 stone 12 pounds). The first race was won by Allabaculia, a brown filly, owned by the Marquess of Rockingham. The second horse past the post was owned by a military gentleman, Lt Colonel Anthony St Leger, of Park Hill estate, near Firbeck, 9 miles from Doncaster. There is some controversy over the naming of the St Leger, some claim it occurred over a meal at The Red Lion in the Market place, others claim it was at the Salutation on South Parade, others at Warmsworth Hall or at Wentworth Woodhouse, the seat of the Marquess of Rotherham. When it was suggested that it should be called the Rockingham Stakes, the Marquess is said to have replied, ' No it was my friend St Leger who suggested the thing to me - call it after him.' The first official St Leger, was won by Hollandaise ridden by George Herring and owned by Sir Thomas Gascoigne. James Pollard was the youngest son of the London engraver and print-seller Robert Pollard. He began work at the age of fifteen as a painter but quickly turned to engraving as well. In the 1820s his coaching scenes became both fashionable and lucrative. "A stream of coaching paintings followed, many of which he engraved himself. From 1821 he exhibited a small number of pictures at the Royal Academy and the British Institution which brought him more patrons. Between 1830 and 1840, Pollard also painted a number of racing pictures and some of the earliest scenes of steeplechasing on purpose-made courses, many recording the prowess of the few professional and more amateur riders of the day... [In all his work Pollard took great pains over accuracy, this is particularly true of his large scale works and] it is Pollard's large racing scenes which really take off and into which one can gaze and discover a microcosm of the turf" (Charles Lane British Racing Prints p.146) Lane British Racing Prints p.149; Selway James Pollard p.45; Siltzer p.221.

Un Buffet de Chemin de Fer / Railway Refreshment Room

Paris: Dusacq & Cie. Editeurs, 1864. Hand-coloured lithograph after a painting by Droz. Very good condition apart from some light soiling, two skillfully repaired small tears in the top and right margins, and an expertly mended loss in the lower part of the image. A beautifully coloured, humorous plate that was most likely part of a series published by Dusacq of images by various artists depicting railway related scenes. During the mid-nineteenth century, the technological advancement and financial prosperity of France under Napoleon III hastened the development of the railway and other modern modes of transportation such as the omnibus. These improvements brought about a culture of mass tourism, as members of various classes flocked to the railroad to take day trips. An archetypal symbol of modern life, the railway station became a popular subject during the period and was represented by artists such as Honoré Daumier and William Powell Frith. It was an ideal place to observe a varied cross-section of society and the comical idiosyncrasies of human behavior. In addition to being a place where one purchased refreshments while awaiting one's train, the railway buffet, as emphasized in this print, became a popular social venue for men and women. Born in 1832, the artist and author Antoine Gustave Droz was the son of the renowned sculptor Jules-Antoine Droz. In 1851, he studied with Picot at the École des Beaux-Arts and exhibited several works at the Salon beginning in 1857. He was primarily a genre painter, and a collection of his witty drawings illustrating family life were published in the satiric weekly magazine Vie Parisienne before being issued as a very well received book entitled Monsieur, Madame et Bébê in 1866. Despite his artistic training, Droz began to focus on his literary career after his initial success and became a well respected author of numerous novels including Entre nous (1867), Autour d'une source (1869), Un Pacquet de letters (1870), and L'Enfant (1885). Many of his books were esteemed for their humorous nature, and this comical element is also evident in several of his early paintings such as Un Buffet de Chemin de Fer on which this plate is based. Cf. Benezit, Dictionaire des Peintres, Sculptteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs , vol. 4, p. 749; cf. Thieme/Becker, Allgemeines Lexicon der bilden Künstler , vol 9/10, p. 585.

        READING THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

[Hartford, 1864. Corners and edges with a few chips and small tears. Small dampstain along lower edge. Image fresh and crisp. Very good. This image depicts a white Union soldier reading the Emancipation Proclamation to a cabin full of slaves (or former slaves). A young boy stands atop a chair and holds a torch aloft to make light, while a woman kneels and clasps her hands together prayerfully at the table next to him, with two smaller children clinging to her. To her left an older woman raises a hand in thankfulness while a man swings his cap to celebrate. To the right of the boy with the torch and the reading soldier, a woman holds a baby while her daughter stands near her, and a man next to her prays over clasped hands. Another man peers incredulously at the newspaper over the shoulder of the soldier. A boll of cotton hangs from a line strung across the room at the top edge of the image. The image was drawn by H.W. Herrick and engraved by J.W. Watts. It is copyrighted by Lucious Stebbins and was issued with a pamphlet by him. The title and a portrait of Abraham Lincoln are beneath the image itself. A wonderful lithograph, combining sentiment and propaganda in equal degrees.

        Avesta:

Hertford: for Muncherjee Hormusjee Cama, by Stephen Austin,, 1864. the religious books of the Parsees; from Professor Spiegel's German translation of the original manuscripts. In three volumes. 3 volumes in one, octavo (215 × 133 mm). Original pink cloth over bevelled boards, covers elaborately panel-stamped with ropework border enclosing similar central panel, floral cornerpieces, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, edges sprinked red, cream surface-paper endpapers. Spine sunned with a few nicks at extremities, tips rubbed, rear hinge repaired, a very good copy. First edition. "Bleeck was for some time in the British Museum, where his remarkable linguistic capacity rendered him very useful. He had a wide knowledge of both oriental and European languages. He afterwards went out to the East during the Crimean War, and until the conclusion of peace held a post in connection with the Land Transport Corps at Sinope on the Black Sea, where his co-author, William Burckhardt Barker, was also stationed. Refused readmission to the British Museum on his return to England, Bleeck worked for several years for a prominent Parsi merchant, Muncherjee Hormusjee Cana, who employed him to prepare an English version of the Avesta, the religious books of the Parsis, who were Zoroastrians, from an existing German translation. He performed the task well, publishing the work in 1864 in three volumes. Bleeck's other works included A Practical Grammar of the Turkish Language (with W. Burckhardt Barker, 1854) [and] A Concise Grammar of the Persian Language (1857)" (ODNB). Scarce in the original cloth.

"First authorized edition of Lincoln's address" - Howes. Everett's speech takes up more than fifty pages, while Lincoln's is printed on a single page. This edition was published for the benefit of the cemetery monument fund.

Poulet-Malassis veranstaltete davon diesen, sicherlich unerlaubten, Nachdruck. In ihm werden die Namen von Persönlichkeiten offen genannt, die in der Orig.-Ausgabe ausgelassen waren.         THE LAKE OF KUGSSUAK AT TASERMIUT, GREENLAND. [with:] KAJUTAKS - FJELD I GODTHAABS FJORD

[Godthaab, 1864. Mounted on board. Minor edge wear. Faint dampstain on second title. Color generally bright and clean. Very good. Archivally matted, protected with Mylar sheet. Two superlative early lithographs by Greenland's first professional lithographer, Lars Møller. The lithographs were done as part of a series of Greenland landscapes, and were based on original artwork by the father of Greenlandic printing, Hinrich Rink. "These lithographs depict different Greenland landscapes...The young Lars Møller did them immediately after returning from his eight months period of training in Denmark, and they are therefore the handsome result of his newly acquired craft. They are, too, the best work he ever did, for after this his work slowly and gradually goes downhill, perhaps because he lacked inspiration and competition. Nevertheless his work as a craftsman and lithographer was of immense and immeasurable importance for two generations of his picture-starved countrymen...The pictures were on sale in the Greenland shops...Since some of the pictures are provided not only with a Danish and Greenlandic caption they may have been used as presents to be sent abroad or possibly even sold abroad" - Oldendow. Consistent with Oldendow's description, the present pairing represents well both Møller's talent and Greenland's dynamic landscape. The first image, presumably the original of which Rink signed, since his initials are reproduced in the lower left corner, shows the serene Lake Kugssuak against a backdrop of mountains. The second, captioned in Danish and Greenlandic, shows Godthaab's famous fjord. Together they offer a wonderful showcase of Møller's nascent skill. Two of the best early lithographs by a native Greenlander, indicative of an ambitious and increasingly influential press.

THE INVINCIBLE IRON CLADS! ENGAGEMENT OF LEM HOWARD, THE CELEBRATED NEGRO DELINEATOR AND MICKY WARREN, THE RENOWNED COMEDIAN FROM NEW YORK: ASSISTED BY THE CELEBRATED BAND, 2d BRIG., 1st DIV., 20th A.C. SATURDAY EVENING, NOV. 5th, 1864

[Atlanta, 1864. Small chip to top right corner, some folds and light creasing. Very good. A rare entertainment broadside for a minstrel show for the Union Army just days before Sherman's March to the Sea during the Civil War. It was likely printed on a field press by the 2d Brigade, 1st Division, 20th Army Corps of Sherman's Army. Under the command of Major General Thomas H. Ruger, the brigade took part in the invasion of Georgia and the seige of Atlanta, which they occupied from early September to mid-November 1864. This performance, which took place with their band participating, occurred around the time they were mustered out. Sherman and his army left Atlanta in ruins on November 15, to begin their "March to the Sea." The "Iron Clads" was the nickname of Samuel M. Sharpley's "Iron Clad Minstrels" formed in 1862. Based in New York City, they were traveling the length of the country, from Buffalo to New Orleans in 1864, according to an advertisement in the NEW YORK CLIPPER on May 28, 1864. Mickey Warren, "a Negro impersonator," no doubt the same as the rest of the troupe, was one of several free-lance performers that appeared with Sharpley. Tommy Pell, listed here, was another. Also listed on the program are Harry Sheppard, Jakey Canning, Prof. Wentworth, and Master Eddy, with top billing going to Lem Howard, naturally. Rare, with only one copy in OCLC, at Duke.

ALBUM PALLIERE ESCENAS AMERICANAS REDUCCION DE CUADROS, AQUARELLES, Y BOSQUEJOS

Buenos Aires, 1864. Oblong folio. Contemporary half black morocco and cloth boards, title stamped in gilt on front cover, spine gilt. Head and foot of spine heavily worn and tearing, hinges and corners lightly worn. Contemporary armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Tissue guards with some foxing, but plates generally quite clean. Good plus. A very rare album of South American scenes, originally drawn by León Pallière and finely printed as lithographic plates in Buenos Aires by J. Pelvilain. The plates include views and portraits of local inhabitants in Argentina (30), Brazil (2), Uruguay (2), and Chile (2). Pallière, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1823 to French parents, travelled to France as a young child and eventually studied art there under F.E. Picot. He continued his artistic training in South America from 1848 to 1850 and in Europe from 1850 to 1855. He then returned to South America, travelling for the next decade in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Bolivia, and producing the images found in this volume. The views consist primarily of rural scenes, and many of these images portray local inhabitants in a variety of activities. These illustrations and the other images of the native and mestizo population represent a variety of local types and occupations including Indians; rural and urban mestizo laborers; middle and upper class women in a theatre gallery and in church; working men in pulperias; black men and women at a market in Bahia; gauchos; soldiers (apparently rural conscripts); and even a surveyor in the countryside. A number of the lithographs focus on life in the country - on the plains, in camp, and at home. One such image, of a couple standing outside a straw house, includes a ten-line romantic poem by R. Gutierrez. Though a full album is comprised of fifty-two plates and a titlepage, this album does not appear to be missing anything and was likely bound this way originally. A marvelous album, extremely rare; no copies on OCLC.
