A Civil War period manuscript celebrating the exploits of the C.S.S. Tallahassee, providing a needed boost to lagging Confederate morale as Grant's army closed in on Petersburg and Richmond

n.p., [1863]. 8" x 10". "Manuscript, ""'A Song for the Forecastle,"" 1 page, 8"" x 10"", [n.p., c. August 1864]. Expected folds, else fine condition. Dedicated ""For the Crew of the Tallahassee,"" and ""Written for the C.S. Fleet expressly by E. King,"" who styled himself as ""'The Naval Song Writer of the South'"" King is best known as the author of the song: The Alabama; Respectfully Dedicated to the Gallant Captain Semmes, His Officers, and Crew, and to the Officers and Seamen of the C.S. Navy. (Richmond: Geo. Dunn& Comp[an]y., c. 1864). The song reads, in full:""We are Southern Sailors bold and freeAnd fear no Invading Northern foeWith our gallant little fleetWe will Chase then O'er the deepAnd we'll fight them wherever we go;Chorus ... For our cause is justAnd in God we'll trustTo give us the Victory. Our Country's summons we'll obeyAnd her Flag gaily fling to the breezeAnd with a Sailors prideWe'll have both wind and tideAS defiant we sail Oe'r the seasChorus... No 'Yankee' shall e're pollute our soilNor a Port shall he find on our strandFor like Tars both brave and trueWe'll show 'Yankee doodle doo'How to die for our dear Native Land.Chorus...""From the papers of John Taylor Wood, who commanded the C.S.S. Tallahassee in 1864. The ship began life as the Atalanta, a London-built blockade runner. Purchased by the Confederate government in July 1864, they renamed her the Tallahassee and the ship quickly gained a notorious reputation in the north, destroying twenty-six vessels and capturing seven others within the space of nineteen days. Needless to say, the Tallahassee attracted the attention of the Union Navy which chased her into the relative safety of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Neutrality laws only allowed the ship to remain in port for 24 hours. Wood, convinced that federal ships would easily capture him if he exited the main entrance to the harbor, found a pilot who managed to guide the ship through Halifax's narrow Eastern Passage, a route normally only used by fishing vessels, and the Tallahassee managed to elude federal ships.John Taylor Wood (1830-1904) , the son of Union General Robert Wood and Anne Taylor, the daughter of President Zachary Taylor, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1852. Initially maintaining a neutral stance following the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, his sympathies headed South after the Battle of Fort Sumter. On April 21, 1861, he resigned his commission in the U.S. Navy and retired to his Maryland farm. The farming life did not last long, however, as life was becoming too dangerous. Fearing for the safety of his family, the Woods moved south to Richmond, Virginias where his uncle, Jefferson Davis, was now presiding over the Confederate capital (Jefferson Davis' first wife, Sarah Taylor, was Wood's mother's sister). In October 1861, Taylor received a commission as a lieutenant in the Confederate States Navy and became an officer aboard the C.S.S. Virginia (the former U.S.S. Merrimack) and fought against he U.S.S. Monitor at the Battle of Hampton Roads. Wood commanded the rear pivot gun and fired the shot that wounded the Monitor's captain. Appointed an aide-de-camp to President Jefferson Davis, Wood was awarded the rank and pay of a colonel of cavalry, giving him simultaneous commands in both the Confederate Army and Navy allowing him to serve as an effective liaison between the services and the government in Richmond. In that capacity, Wood undertook an extensive survey of Confederate costal defenses. During the summer of 1863, he led a series of successful raids against Union shipping in Chesapeake Bay. In the summer of 1864, Wood commanded the C.S.S. Tallahassee, a raider and blockade runner. During his tenure aboard the Tallahassee, he captured an astounding 33 Union ships during a ten-day period off the coast of New England. By April 1865, the situation looked grim for the Confederacy. Wood was with his uncle on April 2, attending St. Paul's Church in Richmond, when a telegram from Lee arrived informing the president that Petersburg would soon fall and the government must evacuate. That evening, he, Davis, and other members of the Confederate government boarded a train for Danville, Virginia. They continued their flight south, where, on May 10, 1865, near the town of Irwinsville, Georgia, Davis and Wood were both captured by Union forces. Wood soon made his escape, with his uncle's permission, by bribing one of his captors and hiding in a nearby swamp until the Federals and their prisoners left the area. Wood made his way south to Florida and met up with Major General John C. Breckinridge. Acquiring a small boat, Wood, Breckinridge, and several other men first attempted to row east to The Bahamas, but abandoned the plan and decided to instead make their way south toward Cuba. He managed to trade with a crew of Union deserters his boat for their slightly bigger sloop. They reached the north shore of Cuban on June 10. He remained in Cuba for two weeks before heading north to Canada, where his family soon joined him. Reunited, they settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and remained there for the rest of their lives. John Taylor Wood died on July 19, 1904."

Kopenhagen, 17. XII. 1863. 3 S., 8°. [An den österr. Chemiker u. - Knickspur. - Versand D: 12,00 EUR Forchhammer, Schrötter, Mineralogie, Geologie, Brief, Letter, Lettre, Briefe, Autograph, Autographe, Autographen, Autograf, Autografe, Autografen, Signatur, Signiert, Signed, Signature, Unterschrift, Eigenhändig, Handschrift, Handschriften, Manuscript, Manuscrit, ALS, A.L.S., LAS, L.A.S.

[1] f., 86 pp., vii pp.. [1863] The period 1840–80 in Colombian political history was characterized by swings between ascensions of the Liberals and of the Conservatives, the Liberals ruling without serious challenge in the last two decades of that period. This publication contains the Constitution of 1863 as ratified by the Ríonegro Convention as well as most of the other legislation that the Convention adopted. The constitution incorporated many anti-clerical measures, including separation of Church and state; full freedom of worship, even for non-Catholics; suppression of religious orders; prohibition of corporate ownership of real property (which amounted to prohibition of Church ownership of property); and governmental supervision of worship. The document also thoroughly decentralized power and made each state a virtual law unto itself. In an attempt to curb the power of Gen. Mosquera, the presidency was made an office of two-year duration, and immediate re-election or succession was barred. Important and rare: NUC Pre-1956 fails to locate any copies and WorldCat finds only two copies. Removed from a volume of pamphlets and now in later wrappers. Ownership mark eradicated from title-page. => A very good copy of a rare item.

True first edition of this seminal classic on the life of Jesus, which caused an immediate scandal when it appeared - Renan's masterpiece, which constitudes the first attempt to write a biography of Jesus the man and strongly puts forth the notion that the Bible too can be subject to historical investigation and critical scrutiny. The work enraged the Roman Catholic Church but was an immediate success in most of Europe. "In six months sixty thousand copies of the French edition had been sold and edition succeeded edition. Renan regarded the book as the first of a series on the "Origins of Christianity", which he continued with "The Apostles" (1866), "Saint Paul" (1869), "The Anti-Christ" (1873), "The Gospels" (1877), "The Christian Church" (1879) and "Marcus Aurelius" (1881) but none of these emulated the success of the "Life of Jesus"... Immediate success was partly a "succès de scandale" but this would not have kept the book alive. It is Renan's approach to the subject and his beautiful prose that gave it lasting eminence." (PMM 352). This groundbreaking work analyses the personality of the man Jesus, -a figure created by Renan out of his mind but based on historical sources. "It is a pastoral idyll with the central figure a gentle, albeit oracular visionary, his power to work miracles a part of his unique personality -the son of man, but not the Son of God... In this great work it seems clear that the audience he has found was the one he sought: the general reading public rather than the limited coterie of scholars; and there is no doubt of the fact or the degree of his success." (PMM 352). (Laffont-Bompiani IV:681). Apart from causing a world-wide scandal, the work was also a world-wide success, and no matter how many harsh words can be said about the historical and religious contents of the work, there is no doubt about the fact that it influenced the destiny of Catholocism decisively and that it is a masterpiece of 19th century French literature. It is very elegantly written and is renowned for its description of the historical setting, charming descriptions of sceneries, its penetrating psychological analysis and its overall style and class. (Laffont-Bompiani IV:681). Ernest Renan (1823-1892) was a French philologist, philosopher and historian. His father died when he was aged five, and his mother wanted him to become a priest. Until he was about 16 years old, he was trained by the Church, but due to his investigative and truth-seeking nature as well as his studies (e.g. Hebrew), he was in doubt as to the historical truth of the Scriptures, and with the help of his sister he chose his own path in life. "He studied intensively the languages of the Bible and filled a number of minor academic positions, frequently encountering difficulties because of the heterodoxy and outspokenness of his religious opinions." (Printing and the Mind of Man 352). In 1840 he began studying philosophy and later philology, in 1847 he took his degree as Agrégé de Philosophie and became master at the Lycée of Vendome. After having returned from a mission to Italy in the year 1850 where he gathered material for his historical-philosophical masterpiece, "Averroës et l'Averroisme", he was offered employment at the "Bibliothèque Nationale" (at the manuscript department). In 1861 he was chosen to become professor of Hebrew at the Collège de France, but because the emperor refused to ratify the appointment (inspired by the Clerical party), he was not established in the chair untill 1870. In 1878 he was elected for the Academy. Renan is considered a scolar of the greatest excellence and an impressive writer

Brochure originale a stampa. A. M.         Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Wien, 28. XI. 1863. - 2 SS. 8vo.

        Grimms' Goblins

Catherine St, Strand, London.: The London Herald Office.. 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Not applicable. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Hablot Knight Browne (Pseud "Phiz"). Bound from the parts 25 weekly parts with 22 colour woodblock plates by "Phiz". and a colour title page. 98 tales on 398 pages + the 22 plates. The final leaf states "The End". Although the publishing details in the margin, printed along the length which can be seen, (just) on several of the parts state "To be completed in 30 numbers". I think the production was finished at the last issue here No25, perhaps due to funds or lack of interest? A small quarto size in original blue embossed and blind stamped diaper cloth, spine re-laid cleverly. New canary yellow endpapers. Contents VG with the odd slight brown mark, minor wear to edges. * The date of this has not been given. I have been informed by a reader of this site that the book dates to 1863/4. This is based on the publisher and their address in the Strand. There is a copy in the National Library of Scotland with "Phiz" illustrations, but NOT this publisher and NOT this issue in parts. I also have information that this has a variant title page without the publishers imprint within the imagery. It is COMPLETE as is and was issued at the time in this blue diaper cloth with gilt motif and titles, something the parts would NOT have had, nor would the publishers have had bolts of cloth waiting for buyers of the parts to ask for them to be then sent back for binding, after all the parts were only 1d. I think this may have been sold as is after the parts finished, but bound from parts. No other copy like this one located and no records of THIS particular issue in parts in ANY library listing on Copac. A curiosity and RARE item with the last tale having a Vampire and some of the tales seeming to be more "Arabian Nights" rather than the imagination of the Brothers Grimm and european in origin?

The Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man.

London: John Murray,, 1863. With remarks on theories of the origin of species by variation. Illustrated by Woodcuts., Octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt to spine, fossil design gilt to front board, both boards panelled in blind, tan coated endpapers. Half title, woodcut frontispiece and one other plate, woodcut illustrations in the text. 32pp. publisher's advertisements at the rear, dated January 1863. Corners lightly bumped, some very minor rubbing, small library stamps and armorial bookplate of the Earl of Lovelace, front free endpaper split at hinge but holding, otherwise internally fresh, a smart copy in excellent condition. First edition in the original cloth, from the library of the Earl of Lovelace. Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1875), considered one of the foremost geologists of his day, is best known as the author of Principles of Geology (1830-3) which popularised James Hutton's concepts of uniformitarianism, and showed that the earth was older than the 6,000 years ascribed to it in the Bible. He was a close and influential friend of Charles Darwin, whose theories Lyell publicly supported and whose Origin of Species he remarks upon in this book. In the main this title concentrates on glaciers, evolution, and the age of the human race. This copy bears the library stamps and armorial bookplate of William King, 8th Baron King and Earl of Lovelace, who in 1835 married the mathematician Ada Lovelace, née Byron, the poet Lord Byron's only legitimate daughter. Ada's notes to her translation of General L. F. Menabra's Sketch of the Analytical Engine Invented by Charles Babbage contain what is regarded as one of the earliest computer programs. Through his marriage King acquired the title Earl of Lovelace in 1838, Ada becoming Countess of Lovelace. The Ben Damph Forrest library stamps derive from their sporting lodge in Scotland, which he built several decades after Ada's premature death in 1852.

New York, 1863. Some very pale mat burn. Near fine. Two of the scarcest Currier and Ives prints, both depicting dramatic scenes of frontier Indian fighting. At the time of the celebrated sale of the collection of Norman James at The Anderson Galleries in 1928, it was noted for each "only a few copies known." The artist of both prints was Arthur Tait, one of the best artists with whom Currier & Ives worked. "Perhaps our greatest sporting artist, Tait would earn a high place in any discussion of art of the period. Among the Currier & Ives group he ranks among the very finest" - Peters.       San Salvador: Impr. del Gobierno Tall folio (35 cm; 13.75"). [1] p.. 1863 Editio princeps of the famous "Pronunciamiento de Sensuntepeque," the grass-roots denouncement of the liberal Barrios government. All but one family of the town banded together to draft and sign this document and to send manuscript copies throughout the country to foment a popular revolution and to support the Guatemalan invasion aimed at ousting Barrios. This is a 180-degree turn-around stance from that of 12 November 1859 when the town published a decree fully supporting Barrios. Pres. Carrera of Guatemala, a Conservative with ambitions to control all of Central America, did unseat Barrios and in October of 1863 installed Francisco Dueñas as president. The meeting at which this document was drafted occurred on 27 February 1863, months prior to the Guatemalan invasion, but this first printed version did not appear until after the fall of Barrios and the installation of the Conservative government. It is dated 11 November 1863. A postscript to the "Pronunciamiento" states "esta acta no se pudo dar a luz en su oportunidad por haber sido persequidos, encarcelados y confiscados los firmantes." The names of the signers are present (in type) above the postscript. => Searches of WorldCat, COPAC, CCILA, and Metabase locate no copies. The part I have taken in this rebellion is dictated by but one feeling, a love of the Union under which this country enjoyed more blessings than any other country under the canopy of heaven - and I would hang every traitor who helped to pull down and dishonor our glorious old flag, and try to bring us to a level of the Mexican states…"" Kentucky-born Joseph Holt practiced law in Mississippi before the Civil War. He served as Buchanan's Postmaster General and as his last Secretary of War, January 18 - March 3, 1861. Anti-slavery and a supporter of the Union, in 1862, Holt was appointed Judge Advocate General of the Union Army.W.W. Carter's Patriotic Motto: ""THE HEEL OF THE OLD FLAG-STAFF SHALL BRUISE THE RATTLESNAKE'S HEAD!""mentioning the endorsement by Holt and Porter and thanks from President LincolnFrom The Rebellion Record: A Diary of American Events edited by Frank Moore (New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1868"" ): ""Document 96: THE HEEL OF THE OLD FLAG-STAFF SHALL BRUISE THE RATTLESNAKE'S HEAD! Across the front of the stand of the National Union Ratification Meeting, held in Baltimore in June, 1864, for the purpose of ratifying the nominations of the candidates for the Presidency and Vice-Presidency of the United States [Lincoln & Johnson], was displayed the above thoroughly national motto, conceived by Mr. W. W. Carter of that city, in March, 1862, and which he afterward had inscribed upon a handsome silken Union flag, which he presented to President Lincoln in the following August, accompanied by a letter requesting:""That the flag might be deposited in the War Department, in order that the motto might be incorporated into the national faith during the present struggle for the supremacy of the Constitution and the Laws, and the perpetuity of our nationality. The motto is national, symbolic, and prophetic. The Heel of the Old Flag-Staff represents the Federal Government; the Rattlesnake's Head represents the Rebellion inaugurated by South Carolina, the symbol of whose sovereignty is that vicious reptile; and the declaration of enmity between the heel and head is prophetic of the absolute power and inflexible determination of the Federal Government to crush out the Rebellion at any and every cost commensurate with the life of the nation.""Let the motto then be inscribed upon the flaunting banners of our advancing armies; let it be spread before the public eye, and thundered into the public ear at all the loyal gatherings of the people; let it stimulate the heart of the nation all over the land, and Anally, let it be the battle-cry for the Union until the flag of our country shall again be planted upon every mountain-top, and its musical flutterings again be borne upon every passing breeze. Yea I until 'O'er all the cities and forts once more, The Stars and Stripes we shall restore.'""""The sentiment, with its accompanying remarks, have been most heartily endorsed by a large number of the Governors of the loyal States, to whom they have been submitted, as - well as by Hon. Edward Everett, Hon. Daniel S. Dickinson, Hon. Joseph Holt, and Commodores Porter, Dahlgren, and others.""President Abraham Lincoln's letter to W.W. Carter: ""Executive Mansion, August 8, 1862. Allow me to thank you very cordially for the elegant and ingenious flag which you have had the kindness to send me, and for the earnest and patriotic letter by which is was accompanied.” "

Recollections of Tartar Steppes and their Inhabitants.

London: John Murray,, 1863. Octavo (182 x 115 mm). Contemporary half calf, decorative gilt spine, green morocco label, marbled paper sides, marbled edges. Wood-engraved frontispiece and 4 plates. Ownership inscription on front pastedown of "Miss Williams's, Wasperton House", Warwickshire; bookseller's stamp of Cooke & Son, Warwick, on front free endpaper. Binding lightly rubbed, a touch of foxing in places. An attractive copy. First edition, uncommon. Lucy Atkinson (1817-1893), traveller and writer, accompanied her husband, Thomas Witlam Atkinson, in Siberia, the Kirgiz steppes and eastwards as far as Irkutsk and the Chinese border. Her "vivid account, which is arranged as a series of letters to a friend, shows Lucy Atkinson to have been an indefatigable horsewoman who was held in respect by local people both for her equestrian skills and as a markswoman with pistol and rifle. Her reference to the birth of her son Alatau (named after a nearby mountain and spring), in the absence of a medical attendant, offers a further indication of her unusually independent capabilities. While of intrinsic interest, her book has recently been used to support criticisms of inauthenticity raised against her husband's second volume by revealing inaccuracies in the chronology and detail. In her descriptions of meetings with survivors of the 1825 Decembrist uprising then scattered through Siberia, including M. I. Murav'ev-Apostol, I. D. Yakushkin, P. I. Falenberg, the Volkonsky and Trubetskoy families, the Borisov brothers, and the Betsuzhevs (which her husband could not include owing to the dedication of his second volume to Tsar Alexander II), Lucy Atkinson's work is of interest and importance to historians of the period" (ODNB).

Panama. Vista géneral tomada del Cerro Ancon por William Leblanc,

New York Snyder Black & Sturn April 1863 - 70 x 53.5 cm. approx., lithograph by Snyder, Black, and Sturn after William Leblanc, sepia border, captioned below border. Fine lithographic view of Panama, taken from Ancon hill, at 200 metres the highest natural point in Panama, overlooking Panama with various ships at harbour in the bay in the distance. In the fore-ground trees and flora frame the vista, focusing the eye on the bird's-eye view of the city beneath. Ancon Hill was key to the defennce of Panama; for example Captain Morgan had climbed the hill to gain a knowledge of the locqal defences before sacking the city in 1671. It became part of the Panama Canal Zone under U.S. jurisdiction and consequently was left as jungle providing a rich habitat for wildlife up until the present day. 1863 was a significanty date in Panama's history as it brought about contitutional changes under which Panama gained increasing autonomy from its union with Colombia. William LeBlanc owned Ancon Hill, and when the builder of the Suez Canal, De Lesseps, visited Panama in the 1880's with a view to building a canal across the Isthmus, Leblanc warned him that there would not be trees enough there to make crosses to place over the graves of his laborours. This provd to be sadly prophetic as the canal cost thousands of lives in its construction.
