Official Civil War Manuscript Histories of Two Companies within the 1st New York Infantry - 1861 to 1863

Camp at Potomac Creek near Falmouth, Virginia, 1863. Loose Leaf Reports. Very Good. Ten legal-size legible pages record the history of two companies from the 1st New York Infantry during the Civil War. Some minor soiling and edge wear. These official histories were written in April, 1863 as the regiment prepared to be mustered out of Federal service in late May. Both are detailed chronologies of the regiment's service told from the perspective of company grade officers. The accounts begin with the regiment's establishment in New York City, its movement to Fortress Monroe, and its participation in the Peninsula Campaign and follow-on actions in Virginia during which the regiment fought at Big Bethel, the Seven Days (the Peach Orchard and Glendale), Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run (2nd Manassas), Chantilly, and Fredericksburg. The accounts, however, are not quite complete because the regiment was ordered into battle one last time at Chancellorsville in early May after these reports were prepared. In addition to detailed chronologies, the records contain officer rosters, listings of dead and wounded, 'final' strength reports, and recognition of soldiers who had performed valiantly including a recounting of Sergeant Field's recovery of the Regimental Colors at the Battle of Fredericksburg after all of the standard bearers had been killed or wounded. Fields charged into a hail of bullets, rescuing the colors and capturing two Confederate soldiers. Both company reports also contain entries regarding their shelling at Newport News by the Confederate ironclad, Merrimac on 8 March 1862. Obviously unique. As of 2016, no similar original, manuscript unit histories are in the trade, nor are any similar auction records listed at Rare Book Hub or ABPC.

Very sad it is to see these white-haired leaders of our procession of life pass on down the hill and disappear."         Der Ring des Nibelungen. Ein Bühnenfestspiel für drei Tage und einen Vorabend von Richard Wagner * G A N Z L E D E R - H a n d e i n b a n d / G A N Z F R A N Z B A N D, signierter Meistereinband von Johs. Larink Hamburg

Leipzig, Verlagsbuchhandlung von J. J. Weber, 1863 - Vollständige Ausgabe in Ganzfranz-Handeinband der Zeit: Ganzleder / Leder / Gldr / Ldr im Format 10 x 14,4 cm mit Ganzgoldschnitt, Rückentitel in Goldprägung, Zeichenband, 5 erhabene Bünde, Lederhäubchen, handgestochenes Kopfband, Zeichenband, Liniendekoration des Rückens und beider Deckel in Goldprägung, Innenkantenvergoldung und farbige Schmuckvorsätze, im Schuber, 442 Seiten, Schrift: Fraktur. Signierter Meistereinband von Johs. Larink Hamburg. - "Warum handgebunden? Views in the Seven Ionian Islands.

London: Published by Edward Lear, , 1863. Folio. Original green pebble-grain cloth neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down, gilt lettered on the front cover, yellow coated endpapers. Housed in a custom made green cloth solander box, green morocco label. Tinted lithographic title page with vignette and 20 tinted lithograph plates by and after Lear. Pencilled ownership inscription on front free endpaper of Mary Cabot Briggs (dated 1913) of the Boston Brahmin Cabots. A very good copy, the gilt on the binding bright and the plates clean. First edition, described by Lear's biographer Peter Levi as "the finest of Edward Lear's productions as a traveller... because its lithographs are of such beauty and done with such care? it marks a high point in his career" (Edward Lear: A Biography, 2013, p. xxiii). In 1854 Lear's close friend Franklin Lushington had been appointed judge at the supreme court of justice on Corfu, "and so Lear decided to join him and make a winter home in Corfu" (ODNB). He would become extremely familiar with the island and its environs over the next ten years. The Ionian islands were ceded to Greece in 1863 and Lear decided to try to exploit this topicality with a view book ("at a time when so great a change in the destiny of these islands is about to occur"), touring the islands before his return home. There are nine views of Corfu, including the title-vignette, three each of Santa Maura, Lefkas, Cephalonia and Zante, and one each of Paxos, Ithaca, and Cerigo. The subscription list of over 300 names is headed by the Royal Library and the Prince of Wales. Lear made a net profit of £300, but had to chase up payment from no less than 50 of the subscribers (Noakes, Edward Lear: The Life of a Wanderer, 1968, pp. 198-99).

THE COLONIAL HISTORY OF THE CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO: BEING A SYNTHETIC ARGUMENT IN THE DISTRICT COURT OF THE UNITED STATES FOR THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA, FOR FOUR SQUARE LEAGUES OF LAND CLAIMED BY THAT CITY.

San Francisco: Towne & Bacon, 1863. - [4],102,[2],115pp. plus frontispiece map. Later calf, gilt ruled boards and spine. Lacking original wrappers. Hinges cracked, leather spine label chipped. Leather book label on front pastedown. Author's presentation inscription on blank frontis map recto to C.V. Gillespie, leaf detached. Text lightly tanned, with an occasional fox mark, otherwise clean. Good. In a half morocco and cloth clamshell box, leather chipped and worn. The scarce first edition of Dwinelle's essential California work, here with a presentation inscription to "C.V. Gillespie, Esq with complts of John W. Dwinelle." C.V. Gillespie was a land title insurance agent, whose business in San Francisco began at the start of the California Gold Rush. The original wrappers betray the origins of Dwinelle's work as a legal brief for the case of "The City of San Francisco vs. The United States," with John W. Dwinelle being the counsel for the claimant. This extensive brief is also a historical account of the city of San Francisco, and confirmed the city's claim to four leagues of "Pueblo Lands," as defined by the Land Commission Act. Dwinelle's history is a great storehouse of information on the beginnings of San Francisco, with printings of a large number of documents which are now either inaccessible or destroyed. Also with a frontispiece map entitled, "The Peninsula of San Francisco." The Streeter copy of the first edition, also in original printed wrappers and with a presentation inscription from Dwinelle to John Hittell, brought $300. This is the Estelle Doheny copy, with her bookplate. HOWES D614, "b." ZAMORANO 80, 32. COWAN, p.189. HOWELL 50:782. SABIN 21573 (listing only the 3rd and 4th eds). STREETER SALE 2879.         Principes de la Théorie des Richesses.

Paris: L. Hachette et Cie,, 1863. Octavo (214 x 130 mm). Contemporary French brown quarter roan, gilt lettered and banded spine, marbled sides, speckled edges, marbled endpapers. A few minor scrapes to binding, inner joints cracked but sound, some light marginal pencillings. A very good copy in a period French binding. First edition. Cournot was the first "to visualize the general interdependence of all economic quantities and the necessity of representing this cosmos by a system of equations" (Schumpeter, History of Economic Analysis, 1986, p. 467). In 1838 he published Recherches sur les Principes Mathématiques de la Théorie des Richesses. Perhaps because he was primarily a mathematician and his work contained technicalities to which economists had been previously unaccustomed, it went almost unnoticed until its significance was recognized by Marshall, Walras and Jevons. The present work states his theory without the mathematics and develops it into a systematic doctrine. Because in the Recherches he "treated only questions where mathematical analysis was applicable... the product was not a complete treatise on political economy but a selection of contributions to various specific topics" (Theocharis, Early Developments in Mathematical Economics, p. 200). In the Principes the results are united.

A very appealing association copy: from the library of General James Alexander St Clair-Erskine, 3rd Earl of Rosslyn (1802-1866), inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Rosslyn. May 23 1866". Also loosely inserted are a newspaper clipping relating to the funeral of James Francis Harry St Clair-Erskine, 5th Earl of Rosslyn, six small photographs showing his grave (one inscribed and dated 13 August 1939) and a postcard photograph showing him at Baden-Baden sometime in the 30s. Traditionally, the Earls of Rosslyn are buried at Rosslyn Chapel. From the late 16th-century the chapel was abandoned and fell into a state of ruin. In 1842 Queen Victoria visited the site and expressed a desire that it should be preserved. Under the aegis of the 3rd Earl of Rosslyn the chapel was restored and finally re-dedicated on 22 April 1862. Edward Bradley (1827-1889) is best known by his pseudonym of Cuthbert Bede, and as the author of one of the runaway best sellers of the 19th-century, The Adventures of Mr Verdant Green, an Oxford Freshman, 1853, (it is estimated that by 1870 it had sold 100,000 copies). He was in many ways the ideal candidate to write this little guide book as he had recently cashed-in on the growing Victorian love affair with Scotland, publishing two books with Scottish settings: Glencreggan (1861) and A Tour in Tartan-Land (1863). He was also a Church of England clergyman and a keen photographer, so the plates may well be from photographs taken by him. Rosslyn Chapel and its speculative connection with the Knights Templar and Freemasonry entered main stream pop culture with the publication of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code in 2003.

        Tales of a Wayside Inn

Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1863 First edition, first printing, with the first issue November 1863 ads citing Tales of a Wayside Inn as "nearly ready." Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by Longfellow on a front flyleaf: "Mrs. Palfrey / with the kind regards / of the Author. / December 23, 1863." Publisher's green cloth, decorated in blind, lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, brown coated endpapers. Very good or better, with some light wear to the extremities, faint toning to the spine, minor chip to the spine head, spine lightly starting inside the front cover, otherwise sturdy binding, a hint of spotting to the vignette title page, some minor creasing to a few page corners, otherwise fresh interior. Overall, a very tight and clean copy, inscribed by Longfellow in the year of publication with an excellent association. BAL 12136. Longfellow inscribed this copy of Tales of a Wayside Inn as a gift to Mary Ann Palfrey (née Hammond) the wife of Massachusetts minister, editor and politician John C. Palfrey. Although, as the editor of the North American Review, Palfrey was well acquainted with many of the major authors of the day, he and Longfellow maintained a close, long-standing friendship that spanned nearly half a century. Indeed, Longfellow corresponded with Palfrey's wife for nearly as long and continued to write to her after her husband's death in 1881. Notably, Longfellow inscribed this copy within the first month and a half of its publication in November 1863. Tales of a Wayside Inn is a collection of poems that relay the stories told by the patrons of the Wayside Inn, a small tavern nearby Longfellow's home and a favorite haunt of Harvard alumni. Notably, this collection includes one of Longfellow's best-known poems, "Paul Revere's Ride," in which he evoked the noble figure from America's past as the nation found itself again on the midst of upheaval. Additionally, this volume includes "The Children's Hour," "The Wraith of Odin," "Iron-Beard," and "The Cumberland," among others.. Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

[Album of watercolours of scenes in Great Britain]

[Great Britain, 1863. Folio. (20 1/4 x 14 1/2 inches). 134 watercolours or pencil drawings, mounted recto and verso on 41 sheets. Several signed by Hallewell, most captioned by him in pencil on the mount. Expertly bound to style in half blue morocco and period marbled paper covered boardsAn important album of British watercolours.Edmund Gilling Hallewell, Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 20th or East Devon Regiment, was stationed in Bermuda from 1841 to 1847. In addition to his military duties he also served as private secretary to the Governor, Colonel William Reid. He subsequently married Sophia Reid, the Governor's daughter. In 1842, Hallewell, with Reid's encouragement, produced watercolours of scenes on the island. These were then sent by Reid to the Colonial Office in London. Interest in the watercolours both in London and Bermuda was such that Hallewell published a suite of lithographed views in 1848. The suite was obviously issued in relatively small numbers and is now very rare: only two copies (one incomplete) are listed as having sold at auction in the past 35 years."Following a tour of duty in Bermuda from November 1841, Hallewell, then lieutenant and adjutant in the 1st battalion of the 20th regiment, arrived at the Halifax station on board HMS Vengeance on May 5, 1847" (Coverdale). The regiment was posted to Kingston, London and Montreal in Canada. The son of a Gloucestershire member of parliament, Hallewell's subsequent military career included service in the Crimea and Malta, before he retired from active service in 1864. In 1869 he was appointed commandant of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, but died in the same year at the age of 47.The present watercolours date from the period following his service in Canada, but prior to leaving Great Britain for the Crimean War. Many of the bucolic images depict scenes near his home in Gloucestershire, as well as in the nearby North Wales countryside. Of particular note are a series of very fine watercolours of Chatsworth. Between 1850 and 1853, i.e. at the same time as the present watercolours, Hallewell exhibited landscapes in the Royal Academy, British Institution and at the Society of British Artists.

Some of the insertions also include attached letters and notes, and several have been placed in labelled envelopes in a later hand. Many entries are undated and some include a little musical notation; Polish violinist and composer Isidor Lotto, Irish composer and accompanist Sir Herbert Hamilton Harty and the British music critic John Alexander Fuller Maitland all appear twice.         Reconstruction du pont de Tilsitt.

(Lyon -64) 1863 - (44,5 x 59 cm). 1 Textblatt. Einband etwas berieben.         Very large steel engraving by François-Joseph-Aimé de Lemud (1817-1887) of a romanticized Beethoven asleep, draped over a square piano, with a cello on the floor, crumpled musical manuscript leaves under the piano, and a pile of musical manuscripts behind the piano

Wien: Stammler & Karlstein, 1863. Beethoven appears to be dreaming, as a conductor (possibly the composer himself) stands before a large orchestra in the upper background with various figures from mythology, religion, and literature in the foreground. "The painting from which [Lemud] derived his Beethoven print was called Beethoven's Dream, and indeed some Hoffmannesque characters seem to have invaded the dream world of the slumbering musical genius..." Comini: The Changing Image of Beethoven, p. 343, figure 131 (p. 269).. 464 x 561 mm. A strong impression on wove paper. Slightly soiled; repairs to edges and lower margin affecting the composer's printed name; remnants of hinges to upper corners of verso.
