John Gould (1804-1881) was born in Dorset, and spent his early career years as a taxidermist.       Yantai, Shandong Province, China: 23 June 1860. Watercolour, 230 x 380 mm, signed and dated ("Lindesay Brine fecit June 22 1860"); mounted. An attractive and skillfully executed drawing heightened with watercolour. Two Chinese figures carrying baskets have been sketched in the foreground but have not been finished. A European ship and numerous ships either sail or ride at anchor off a promontory hill, probably Tengchow (now Penglai), one of the treaty ports opened for foreign trade following the 1858 Treaty of Tianjin.Lindesay Brine, who entered the Royal Navy in 1847, was the author of "The Taeping Rebellion in China; a narrative of its rise and progress, based upon original documents and information obtained in China" (London: Murray, 1862). This watercolour was made on the spot during his service as commander in the China Seas. The painting is captioned in ink on the image: "HMS Gunboat Opossum - Junk by Chefoo - The French Troops are Encamped on the Hill." "While serving in the Far East, [Brine] took much pains to collect accurate information on the troubles then prevailing, and in 1862 published the results of his observations and inquiries in a volume entitled 'The Taiping Rebellion in China'" (Obituary in The Geographical Journal 27,3 (March 1906).         41 CARTE DE VISITE PHOTOGRAPHS OF TURNBULL AND HIS EXTENDED FAMILY The photographs date from the early 1860s and include 4 fine portraits of Turnbull himself and one group family photo. They are mostly original photographic images, but a few of the older family members are depicted by photographs of earlier engravings and painted portraits.

1860-1880 1860 - 41 images, each 4 x 2.5 inches. Nearly every one is fully annotated with the details of the sitter. The images include his first wife and her relatives, and his second wife Fanny (Cubitt's niece), Fanny's family members, and their children. In very good unfaded condition. George Turnbull (b 1809 in Scotland) trained as an engineer in London under Thomas Telford, then building St Katharine Docks, in 1828. By 1830 he became Telford's draughtsman and clerk. He was made an Associate of the Institution of Civil Engineers at age 19 and eventually was the oldest member. In 1845 he married Jane Pope in St. Margaret's, Westminster. She died in 1850 in Calcutta. In 1855 he married Fanny Thomas, niece of the engineer William Cubitt. They had five children. Turnbull's illustrious career encompassed several disciplines, working with many of the greatest names in engineering. In 1832, he helped survey the options for supplying water to London. He was involved in 1833 with experiments for fast passenger canal boats on the Paddington Canal, working alongside Cubitt and Dundas. Turnbull was promoted to chief engineer building the Bute ship canal and Bute Dock in Cardiff, reporting to Cubitt. In August 1836 Turnbull was in Bristol witnessing the 1½-inch bar drawn across the river at Clifton for the future suspension bridge. Brunel visited him at the Cardiff works in 1839. From 1840 to 1842 Turnbull built Middlesborough Dock. In 1843 he was resident engineer for Cubitt, building the railway line from the Shakespeare Tunnel along the shore to Dover station (he entertained the Duke of Wellington, "pale, old and shaky on his legs", who visited the works). He also built a pier and landing stages at Folkestone Harbour. In 1845 he was the engineer in Birkenhead for the complex Seacombe Wall defences that helped drain the marshes behind the town of Seacombe. In 1846-9 he was the resident engineer for the Great Northern Railway, making cuttings and the South Mimms, Copenhagen and three other tunnels for the first 20 miles out of London, and drawing up the first plans for Kings Cross station. In 1850 Turnbull was appointed Chief Engineer of the East Indian Railway and between 1851–1862 built the first 541 miles of railway from Calcutta to Benares (on the route to Delhi), and designed Calcutta's terminus at Howrah. This was a massive logistical undertaking, as no steel works existed in India at this time, hence all the rails and ironwork for the many bridges had to be imported from England. Another constraint was the difficulty of moving enormous volumes of materials from Calcutta up the Ganges on local boats, particularly during the Indian Mutiny when many boats were sunk and materials stolen. He continued with many other important railway, navigation and public health projects in the sub-continent. He is known as the First Railway Engineer of India. He returned to England in 1875, where he continued to involve himself in further important engineering projects.

Notes on Nursing: What It is, and What It is Not

New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1860 First American edition. Publisher's green-black pebbled cloth, lettered in gilt, pale yellow coated endpapers. About fine, with some light rubbing to the otherwise very bright binding, some spotting to the otherwise clean interior. An exceptional copy. Notes on Nursing is a revolutionary textbook about basic nursing geared towards those entrusted with caring for others. A champion of formalizing nursing education, Nightingale spearheaded the two-pronged effort of creating a more educated public as well as more formally trained nursing staffs. Just as she helped establish a school to train midwives at King's College Hospital, Nightingale penned this text of general advice on how to care for others because, as she writes in the preface, "Every woman, or at least almost every woman, in England has, at one time or another of her life, charge of the personal health of somebody, whether child or invalid, - in other words, every woman is a nurse.".         "Toronto, Canada West" and "The Great Eastern"

New York: Charles Magnus, 1860. Hand-colored lettersheets measuring 8-1/2 x 21 inches. 4to. A little grubby, but very good. Provenance: Estate of James and Katherine Abbe, Long Island, New York. Hand-colored lettersheets measuring 8-1/2 x 21 inches. 4to. The two lettersheets here are unusual productions for Magnus, most of his lettersheets featured images of New York and its environs or of the Civil War. The first of these two is based on Edwin Whitefield's "Toronto, Canada West" first published in 1854. Magnus is known to have reproduced it in the late 1850s. When launched in 1858, the Great Eastern was easily the largest ocean liner of its day. She was subsequently used to lay the Trans-Atlantic telegraph cable in 1865. This lettersheet was almost certainly issued between those two dates.Charles Magnus emigrated to New York with his family in the late 1840s. His older brother published the weekly German language newspaper, Deutsche Schnellpost, and it was there that Charles learned the trade, eventually going out on his own. In the guises of a publisher, map dealer, bookseller and stationer, he issued more than a thousand pieces of illustrated stationery - lettersheets, envelopes, song sheets, as well as prints - usually copying the work from other sources without attribution, sometimes altering the images slightly. He continued to use lithography and hand-coloring long after other publishers turned to photomechanical reproduction processes.Lettersheets were a convenient and thrifty form of stationery in an era in which postage was calculated on the number of sheets used. Folded in half, these four pages were charged as a single page.

Souvenirs de paris et sus Environs [cover title]

[Paris: Chez Wild and A Hauser, circa 1860], 1860. Cloth a little worn at the edges; some light foxing; fine copy.. Oblong 4to, 26 x 35 cm, original gilt-and blind-stamped black cloth. 57 plates of views and scenes of Paris and surrounding locations by artists Jules B. Arnout and A. Deroy, lithographed by Rosé-Joseph Lemercier. One of the plates is in triplicate. A fine and classic collection of views of Paris, though apparently a hybrid assembledge of undetermined bibliographic origins. The plates have two different imprints: Wild, Passage de Sauman 38, and A. Hauser, Boul. des Italiens 11, but they are all lithographed by the famous Rosé-Joseph Lemercier. The numbering of the plates is not entirely sequential, pointing to the probability that this volume was put together with an assembledge of remainder plates from other works; nonetheless, it is larger collection of the Lemercier lithographs than is usually encountered in a single volume. 34 of the plates are signed by Arnout and 23 by Deroy.

      c. 1860. Folio. 440 x 290 mm. pp. 23 double sided prints. Printed in green with hand drawn purple straight ruled borders, bound in contemporary half morocco, recently rebacked, lettered in gilt on the spine. A rare collection of nature printing in colour and of woody, rather than fleshy, specimens. Due to the more resistant nature of the specimens there are significant impressions on to the paper. Nature Printing. The art of nature printing originates in the 13th Century but it seems to have been the 1850s which saw a serious interest in England and Scotland with the work of William Aitken, Ferguson Branson and Thomas Moore. They all used a mechanical process to impress an image on lead or zinc, subsequently electroplating a printing plate on copper. However nature printing, in its simplest form, was easy to master and was also adopted enthusiastically by amateurs who would use the technique for collecting and recording plants, seaweeds and even moths and butterflies. The simple inking of a specimen, laying it onto paper, or between two sheets, and pressed with weights or a roller would produce an accurate and pleasing image to satisfy naturalists and artists.

        The Barbarism of Slavery

Buell & Blanchard 1860 - Leather bound hardcover. Fine binding and cover. Gilt lettering with decorative border on front cover. Original pamphlet in modern binding. *Includes clipped in signature from Charles Sumner* Wear to edges of pages with toning and foxing throughout. Stamps and markings from Potomac Valley Memorial Association, Deerfield, Massachusetts. Previous owner's signature on top of first page. Text remains clear and legible. "The Barbarism of Slavery" was Charles Sumner's first speech after returning to the Senate following his savage beating at the hands of CongressmanPreston Brooks. Delivered on June 4, 1860, during the debate over admitting Kansas as a free state, Sumner attackedthe southern portrayal of slavery as a benevolent institution. He focused on the violence that resulted from maintaining a system of forced labor and the attending consequences on society in the slave states. From Sumner's Memoir: "It was in his mind to show to the country and mankind that what the pro-slavery party vaunted as the finest product of civilization was none other than essential barbarism." *Autographed by author.* Abolitionist movement.
