Cairo, Imprimerie Nationale, 1894. 8vo. With 19 plates with reproductions of photographs. Modern green cloth.

      S. Marmon, Eunuchs and sacred boundaries in Islamic society, p. 103; S. Sheehi, The Arab imago: a social history of portrait photography, 1860-1910, pp. 166-167. First and only edition of a report on the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina written by the Egyptian doctor Saleh Soubhy. Soubhy worked as a health inspector at Cairo, and was appointed by khedive Abbas Hilmi II (1874-1944) to investigate the sanitary conditions of the Egyptian pilgrimage caravan to Mecca and Medina. Soubhy travelled to the Hijaz in 1888 and 1892, and published his experiences in the present work. "The French-educated doctor, Soubhy, wrote for a foreign audience in order to show both the sanctity and orderliness of the Hajj, regulated by quarantines and public health measures through which a great number of pilgrims flowed" (Sheehi). With this work, "a carefully composed defense of Islam" (Marmon), Soubhy also tried to portray Islam is as an acceptable religion to his European colleagues. The book also includes some important early photographs of Mecca and Medina, taken by Muhammad Saduq Bey (1832-1902), the first to photograph the holy cities, and al-Sayyid 'Abd al-Ghaffar (active 1880's).With a bookplate on paste-down. Upper outer corner of half-title restored, tiny piece of the same corner torn off from the title-page, browned throughout, half-title smudged, and a few plates slightly thumbed, otherwise in good condition.

Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology

London: John Murray,, 1860. of the Countries Visited During the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Round the World. Under the Command of Capt. Fitz Roy. Tenth Thousand. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, boards blocked in blind, brown coated endpapers. Engravings in the text. Front hinge partly split but holding, text block sound, light foxing to contents; an excellent copy in exceptionally bright cloth. Second edition, and the final definitive text. The Journal of Researches was first published as volume III of Fitzroy's Narrative of the surveying voyages of His Majesty's Ships Adventure and Beagle in 1839, and also issued as an independent volume at the same time. The second edition, extensively revised and reduced from about 224,000 words to 213,000, was first published in 1845 in the scarlet cloth of John Murray's Colonial and Home Library. It was reprinted in the same series in 1852, stated on the title page as a new edition, instead of second, although no changes had been made. The present edition is the next issue of the same second edition, and is the final text as Darwin left it. The parts from the original stereos are the same, but a postscript, dated 1 February 1860, is added to the preliminaries, and it is issued for the first time in a green cloth case of the same style as the first three editions of the Origin. "The page height is nearly two centimetres greater than before and the wider margins give the book a much better appearance." Darwin noted in his autobiography that "the voyage of the Beagle has been by far the most important event in my life and has determined my whole career…As far as I can judge of myself I worked to the utmost during the voyage from the mere pleasure of investigation, and from my strong desire to add a few facts to the great mass of facts in natural science. But I was also ambitious to take a fair place among scientific men…The success of this my first literary child always tickles my vanity more than that of any other books."

With full-page woodcut coat of arms of the dedicatee, full-page woodcut diagrammatic surveying map, 36 woodcuts in the text and woodcut factotums. Late 18th-century half calf (neatly rebacked).

Adams & Waters, English maritime books 252; ESTC S104686; Johnson, Astronomical thought in Renaissance England 176 & 310; Kelso, Doctrine of the English gentleman in the 16th century 137; Luborsky & Ingram 3432; Parker, Books to build an empire 92-93 & 248; Sitwell, Four centuries of special geography 117. First edition of the first book in English on practical matters of geography and navigation, intended for pilots, ship's captains, sailors, soldiers, carpenters, surveyors and traders. Grounded in Bourne's own experience and addressed to those unschooled in mathematics, it boasts a string of firsts. It contains the first popular explanation in English of surveying by triangulation and the first illustration of this method applied to an actual location (at a scale of 1:52,800). It is the first English book to describe the volumes, capacities, and proportions of ships' hulls-for loading and storing commercial merchandise, for getting ships over bars or shoals and for raising sunken vessels for salvage. It is the first book to set out the sizes and weights of cordage and give rules for their computation. And it offers the first explanation of ocean currents in English, including the North and South Atlantic Drift, on which the English relied in their subsequent aggressive expansion to the east and west. He also discusses the formation and peopling of the Americas. The treasure also aided spies, brigands, explorers and gentleman tourists. The Preface "advised persons going into strange countries to observe the state of civilization of the region, the nature of the fortifications, access to the sea, the government, laws, buildings, natural enemies and friends among neighbouring states, the major items in trade, commodities produced, customs and tolls, manner of waging war, etc." (Parker). It represents a peculiarly "English" tradition, independent of Continental models, in which the traveller especially values the common wealth. The Macclesfield copy, with his 1860 armorial North Library bookplate. Title-page soiled, marginal worm-holes in first four and last six leaves, affecting text only in the errata (which is very slightly shaved) and 1 shoulder note. Otherwise in very good condition.

[Pustaha].[Northern Sumatra, ca. 1860/1920?]. A manuscript (16 x 11.5 x 6 cm) in the old esoteric Hata Poda language used by the Batak "datu" (shamans), with the text written in the Batak script and the decorations and illustrations drawn, both in black ink on both sides of thin split-wood leaves (1.3 mm thick), with about 45 illustrations in the text and a few additional decorations. Made from a single long strip of thin split-wood, scored vertically across the (horizontal) grain and accordion-folded at the score lines, with the blank outside surface of the first and last leaf given a dark stain to serve as a front and back cover.

A rare Batak divinatory manuscript written in the old Hata Poda language, used as a secret language by the Batak "datu" (shamans, magicians or "witch doctors"), and illustrated with about 45 small drawings in the text, mostly showing human figures and chickens or cocks, but also with some more mysterious diagrams. It is a sort of notebook or manual with instructions for various methods of divination and/or hints serving as reminders for the shaman already familiar with the methods. The subjects covered by the Pustaha have been summarized as the art of preserving life, the art of destroying life and astrology. It therefore combines elements of religion, medicine and astrology. Many of the divinations described in the present Pustaha are made by beheading a chicken or cock, letting it fall on the ground under cover of a basket, and interpreting the meaning of its position when uncovered. Such oracles giving auguries of good or ill fortune were often consulted before the construction of a new house, the contracting of a marriage and any other momentous occasion. The manuscript contains an occasional small stain, hole or crack, many probably present when the manuscript was first produced, and the outer edges of the pages are darkened, not obscuring the text, but the text, illustrations and decorations are otherwise in very good condition. Many of the folds have separated over part of their length, with one pair of leaves still attached only by a few fibres, and there are some small abrasions on the front, edges and especially the back, but the entire book remains remarkably well preserved. A rare and important record of Batak culture when it still survived relatively free from European and other outside influences.

Zus. 20 S., Kl.-8 u. 8. Kreisen wichtige Kontakte her. Brief (Entwurf bzw. Abschrift?) m. Unterschrift Mislins an die Gräfin. - ÖBL VIII, 228f.

        6 eigenh. Briefe m. Unterschrift.

Zus. 25 S., 8. [...] From the mid 1850s onwards OSullivan secretly takes part in the expansionist agenda of Prince Leopold, Duke of Brabant, thus becoming a member of the broad but informal network surrounding the prince. Together they develop a daring project, though one that will remain hypothetical, consisting of a Belgian military action during the Crimean War. OSullivan begins to work on a new definition of the concept of neutrality a concept that will be abandoned in exchange for territorial acquisition. The goal is that Belgium will become more independent of France through a deeper connection to the allies during the war and that territorial expansion will be on the Rhine, at the cost of Prussia, rather than of Holland, which is what the Duke of Brabant had in mind. A second line of thought concerns the aftermath of the Crimean War, when, in OSullivans opinion, the Ottoman position will be seriously weakened, making it possible for Belgium to occupy certain parts of the empire. OSullivan shows himself in his correspondence with the prince to be a hardliner expansionist, willing to topple the Sultan and replace him with a Christian, preferably Catholic, king recruited in Belgium, where a tradition of political neutrality existed. A few years later, upon the Duke of Brabants return from Constantinople via Trieste in May 1860, OSullivan delivers a memorandum to the prince entitled Mémoire sur la formation dune compagnie belge dans larchipel méditerranéen. This memo comprises a scheme to occupy an island in the eastern Mediterranean (Crete or Cyprus), that will be bought or leased from the Sultan, and provides a blueprint for commercial exploitation under the protection of Leopold I, with the Duke of Brabant as president of the Board of Directors [...] (Dr. Jan Anckaer). -

OFFICIAL PROCEEDINGS OF THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION, HELD IN 1860, AT CHARLESTON AND BALTIMORE. PROCEEDINGS AT CHARLESTON, APRIL 23 - MAY 3. Prepared and Published Under the Direction of John Parkhurst, Recording Secretary

Cleveland: Nevins' Print, Plain Dealer Job Office, 1860. 188pp. Dbd. Ink pen trial on titlepage. Light wear in foredge of titlepage and upper margin of final text leaf. Two text leaves printed on slightly folded paper, resulting in obscuration of some text. Good. The official record of a crucially important moment in American politics, the 1860 Democratic Convention(s), at which Stephen A. Douglas won the nomination and faced Republican nominee Abraham Lincoln in the general election. The first convention was held in Charleston in late April and early May, and was a rancorous affair. Douglas led the field of nine total candidates at Charleston, over the opposition of militant Southern Democrats (so-called "Fire Eaters"). Despite the fact that fifty-seven separate ballots were held, Douglas could not secure the necessary two-thirds majority of delegates. The delegates therefore adjourned and reconvened in Baltimore in June, where the committee voted to exclude certain delegates from Louisiana and Alabama who had been disruptive in Charleston. Douglas finally secured the nomination on the second ballot in Baltimore, and went on to lose the general election to Lincoln. The present text prints all the proceedings of the Charleston and Baltimore conventions, offering a detailed picture of American politics at their most fractious.
