Notes of lectures on ?physiology,? given at Univ. College . . . session 1859-60

London, 1859-1860. Sharpey, William (1802-80). Notes of lectures on ?physiology,? given at Univ. College . . . session 1859-60. Manuscript notes and drawings in the hand of a student, Thomas F. H. Green. 4 unnumbered leaves, 361 numbered pages, approximately 100 blank pages at the end. [London,] 1859-60. 227 x 189 mm. 19th century half leather, marbled boards, rebacked in cloth, light wear, original plain gray wrappers bound in. Very good. Small stamp of the Birmingham Medical Institute on 2 or 3 leaves. Sharpey was appointed professor of anatomy and physiology at University College in 1836; he was the first to teach a complete course of physiology and minute anatomy at an English medical school. He was the author of two classic papers on cilia and ciliary motion (see Garrison-Morton 600 and 603) and discovered the ?fibers of Sharpey? in bone tissue (see Garrison-Morton 545); he also edited the fifth through eighth editions of Jones Quain?s Elements of Anatomy. Through his pupils Sharpey was the founder of the British school of physiology; his students included Michael Foster, first professor of physiology at Cambridge University, and John Burdon-Sanderson, the first to occupy the Waynflete Chair of Physiology at Oxford. These lecture notes cover the blood, tissues of the body, vascular system, digestive system, respiration, brain and nervous system, organs of special senses and reproduction. The notes are written on rectos only; several versos contain neatly executed drawings in ink or pencil, many illustrating aspects of microanatomy.

Songs, Duetts, Glees, Chorusses, Dances, & Marches in Various Dramas [manuscript]

Philadelphia, 1860. Very Good. [32] p.: music; 6 x 26 cm. Stiffened marbled paper boards with black cloth spine. Handwritten paper label on front board. Compiler's name is written inside and outside front board, with Philadelphia address. Printed staff paper throughout. First 3 pages contain musical rudiments--time signatures, key signatures, and rhythmic patterns. The remainder contains melodic lines written out in treble or base clef, identified by a few words and the name of the larger work. Contents: songs from Pizarro [by Michael Kelly] -- Rob Roy [by Isaac Pocock] -- Careless' Song from School for Scandal -- Eva's song from Uncle Tom's Cabin [George C. Howard] -- a duet from Mrs. White -- the fairy chorus from Merry Wives of Windsor -- Roland for an Oliver [Thomas Morton] -- "I have a Silent Sorrow Here" from Sheridan's The Stranger -- Sweethearts & Wives [James Kenny] -- a dance in Speed the Plough [Thomas Morton] -- Bombastes Furioso [William Barnes Rhodes] -- Sampson's song in The Inchcape Bell [Edward Fitzball] -- Jenny Lind -- Killing no Murder [Theodore Hook] -- The Loan of a Lover [J.R. Planche] -- Robin's song in The Waterman -- "O Happy Tawny Moor" from The Mountaineers [George Colman] -- The Illustrious Stranger [Isaac Nathan] -- Sir Felix' song in The Agreeable Surprise [John O'Keefe; Samuel Arnold] -- Miss Bertrams' song in Guy Mannering -- William's song in Black-eyed Susan [Douglas Jerrold] -- "What Night so Long" from How to Pay the Rent [Tyrone Power] -- a march in Blue Beard -- songs in Hamlet -- Beauty & the Beast. Four blank pages follow and then one last page with unidentified music. The compiler of this manuscript book of mid-19th-century popular stage music was James A. A'Becket (1847-1904), son of Thomas A'Becket, Sr. (1808-1890), and brother of Thomas A'Becket, Jr. (1843-1918). His father, Thomas Sr., was an actor and musician who was active in Philadelphia in the 1840s and 1850s and throughout the United States in later years. His brother, Thomas Jr., was a musician who was a pianist and composer of music for piano. James A'Becket probably compiled this collection of theatrical tunes about 1860, when he was a teenager and his father was active as a performer in and manager of various Philadelphia theaters. In 1864 James served as a musician with the 196th Regiment of Pa. Volunteers, Company F. In 1868 he married Laura V. Middleton; he worked for most of his adult life as a grainer (someone who painted faux wood or marble grain). A rare and perhaps unique snapshot of popular theatrical music from the American stage of the mid-19th century. In Very Good Condition: cloth over spine is split; boards are slightly soiled; first 2 and last 2 leaves appear to have been glued along the edges to the boards, from which they have separated, leaving part of the first leaf and last attached to the adjacent board; faint dampstain along lower edges of a few leaves; otherwise clean and tight.

        Essays and Reviews.

London: John W. Parker and Son, 1860 - Octavo. Original purple cloth blocked in blind to spine and boards, brown coated endpapers, titles to spine gilt. Pencilled ownership inscription to front free endpaper, pencilled inscription to title, newspaper clipping tipped-in to rear pastedown. Cloth rubbed, contents shaken, some worn spots to joints and ends of spine, small spot to lower board, corners bumped, occasional spotting to contents, spine cracked in the gutter at several places, a good copy. First edition of this groundbreaking collection of theological essays, the first assault on Biblical literalism from within the ranks of British theologians. The edifice of literalism had been crumbling for several decades, under assault from the science of Lyell and Darwin and the new Biblical criticism of Baur and Strauss at the University of Tübingen. "But all these were outside the Church of England, and it was thus with a double force that Essays and Reviews, when it generally became known, struck clergy and laity. Not only did the book subscribe to the modern non-literal concept of the Bible text, but, far worse, the authors were with one exception beneficed clergy, and the majority came from the sanctuary of Oxford" (PMM 348). Two of the contributors, Rowland Williams and Henry Bristow Wilson, were found guilty by the Court of Arches, though the verdict was overturned by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, and in the long-term the Church came to accept much of what the essayists advocated. Rare, particularly in the original cloth. PMM 348 [Attributes: First Edition]

        (Amish Valentine)

1860. Single leaf measuring 5 by 7 3/4 inches. A drawing of a young man and woman glancing shyly at each other, with their noses drawn in an angular fashion so as to point at each other. Below the figures is penned words "i cant [sic] stop long this time." A Feb. 25, 1861 inscription on the verso says "Valentine - Mr. Willis S. Marden." The young man wears simple clothing, a blue hat with a red band, a red shirt, and blue pants, that seems to place him in an Amish or Mennonite community. His hair is long and curly. The woman's costume is slightly more elaborate; she wears red shoes and a pearl necklace with her blue dress, and her uncovered hair is curled. The sheet of paper was once folded into quarters. Until postal rates became standardized, early valentines were typically folded, sealed, and hand-delivered to a beloved's doorstep. Pennsylvania-German or Dutch handmade valentines gained recognition for their fine workmanship, with detailed pinprick and cutout designs. This example is no less remarkable for its simplicity. Some faint discoloration, primarily to fold lines, and slightest wear to two corners.

A unique collection of Nicolet's art work for Thomson's publications. Hercule Nicolet is one of the best French natural history artists of the 19th century. The collection comprises 125 original splendid drawings in watercolour and a few in ink. Almost all drawings are signed by the artist. The collection belonged to James Thomson, who had his publications bound in beautiful bindings mostly with his gilt coat of arms, on spines or front covers. Contemporary half calf, spines with gilt coat of arms of Thomson and gilt ornaments, gilt edges. Added 39 original plates for the above work, of which 34 watercolour drawings and 5 drawings in ink, almost all signed by Nicolet. THOMSON, JAMES. Arcana Naturae ou Receuil d'Histoire Naturelle. Paris, chez J.B. Baillière et Fils, 1859. Folio (390 x 270mm). From this work the following separately published monographs: THOMSON, JAMES. Added 1 original watercolour drawing signed by Nicolet, covering these 2 plates. Contemporary half red calf, spine with coat of arms of Thomson and his initials J.T. THOMSON, JAMES. Added 3 original watercolour drawings, signed by Nicolet. These plates are additional unpublished plates. [And] 2 similar engraved frontispieces to the 'Arcana Naturae' as well as the original splendid watercolour drawing for the frontispiece, signed by the artist. Contemporary red half calf, gilt lettered spine. THOMSON, JAMES. Musée scientifique, ou recueil d'histoire naturelle. Paris, chez l'auteur, 4to. pp. 96, with 9 plates. Of the above work there is no copy in the collection, however 8 of the original watercolour drawings, all signed, are present. The first 4 plates are on one large folio leaf, the remaining are each on one leaf, the original plate 9 is not present. Loose in a portfolio 36 original drawings in watercolour and a few in ink, some probably relating to the above works by Thomson, or to Thomson's publications in periodicals. Many drawings are signed by Nicolet. Added are 8 leaves of handwritten text with several pencil drawings on one leaf, most probably by Nicolet. These drawings are not included in the total count of plates. Hercule Nicolet (1801-1872) was a French-Swiss artist, lithographer, and entomologist. He was a well known lithographer in Neuchâtel and was closely connected to Louis Agassiz. Of Agassiz publications almost all the plates were lithographed by him. Some of the plates produced by Nicolet belong to the finest portrayals of fossil fishes and living specimens, many of the excellent plates utilise metallic colours (silver, bronze, gold) to convey the appearance of the metallic sheen of scales that has been preserved in the fossil remains as well as livings specimens. When Agassiz left Neuchâtel in March 1846 for America, the 'Institut lithographique'of Hercule Nicolet soon collapsed. In the same year Milne-Edwards asked Nicolet to contribute to the 'Velins du Muséum'. 'Des 1846, Milne Edwards lui demanda sa collaboration artistique à la collection de vélins du Muséum d'Histoire naturelle de Paris' (Cuevas p. 457). A few years later James Thomson (1828-1897) commissioned Nicolet to illustrate most of his work, see the here offered collection. James Thomson was an American entomologist of independent means and lived in France the greater part of his life. He formed a large collection of Cerambycidae, Buprestidae, Cetonidae, and Lucanidae, which he sold to Réne Oberthür. The original watercolour of the frontispiece for the 'Monographie des Cicindélides' has the name of James Thomson beneath the coat of arms held by two cherubs. On the engraved plate the name of James Thomson has been deleted. The same coat of arms, or the lion alone, is present on a number of the books. The quality of the original watercolour plates is extraordinary and belongs to the finest ever made in the field of entomology. His work is breathtaking and the two original watercolour frontispieces one for the 'Cicindélides' and the other for 'Arcana' show his genius as an artist. Nicolet was not only a great artist and lithographer but also an excellent entomologist. His largest publication is the section on arachnids of Gay's 'Historia fisica y politica de Chile', published in 1849. Bonnet in his 'Bibliographia Araneorum' writes of him as follows: "Un important travail sur les arachnides du Chili dans lequel il décrit 297 espèces d'araignées, toutes nouvelles excepté quatre, et dont le plus grand nombre sont en effet maintenues, car il était le premier à décrire des arachnides de ce pays'. Apart from the above work, Nicolet published some more articles, among which his 'Histoire naturelle des Acariens qui se trouvent aux environs de Paris', published in the 'Archives du Muséum'. 'De l'avis des spécialistes, ce dernier travail est tout à fait remarquables et fait encore autorité en la matière' (Cuevas p. 457). Hercule Nicolet was a person of great talents and excelled as an artist, lithographer and scientist. His friend Louis Agassiz was quintessential for his zoological and artistic formation. The present collection is a unique document of the period. See: 'Hercule Nicolet, épisodes redécouverts d'une vie d'artiste naturaliste au XIXème siecle' by Arturo Munoz Cuevas in 'Bol. Soc. Entom. Aragonesa', no. 39 (2006); Favre, L. 'Hercule Nicolet. Lithographe'. Musée Neuchâtelois pp. 130-135; Courvoisier, J. 'Savants, artistes et graveurs: l'atelier d'Hercule Nicolet, lithographe de Louis Agassiz', in 'Aspects du livre neuchâtelois' pp. 433-451); Bonnet, P. 'Bibliographia Araneorum' p. 35.

Pescatorea. Iconographie des Orchidées. Avec la collaboration de J.E. Planchon, M.G. Reichenbach, G. Luddemann. Premier volume (all published).

Bruxelles, M. Hayez, 1860. Folio (450 x 330mm). pp. (vi), with 48 beautifully handcoloured lithographed plates, each plate with an explanatory leaf of text. Contemporary half calf, richly gilt decorated spine with gilt lettering, sides with blind pressed and gilt decorated ornaments and lettering. First edition of this important and attractive work. 'An orchid hunter par excellence, Linden was the first to search the mountainous regions diligently for his orchids. In so doing, he was able to obtain many new cool-temperature plants for his sponsors in Belgium. After ten years in the western hemisphere, Linden returned to Brussels in 1845, where with his son, Lucien, he founded Horticulture Internationale, the first major commercial competitor of the British orchid house Messrs. Sander. The book is named in honour of M. Pescatore of St. Cloud, France, one of the earliest orchid hobbyists on the continent, and whose collection was formed by Linden. The publication was discontinued upon Pescatore's death. The handcoloured lithograph plates were made by F. Detollenaere, after drawings by Maubert (fl. 1840-1860)' (The Orchid observed, n. 16). Jean Linden (1817-1898) was a native of Luxembourg, who still a youth moved to Belgium, to which country he imported more than 1100 different orchid-species. Because of his important contributions to orchid literature, Linden received a number of commendations and honours, and many orchids were named after him. A beautifully bound and very clean copy. The last 5 leaves with tiny inkstain at the outer margin. Great Flower Books p. 65; Nissen BBI, 1196.

The results of the expedition were published in a work which appeared in 1858-95... The present ornithological section of the work records the results of Maack's journey in 1855, and contributions were also made by the botanist Carl Maximowicz, who took part in the expedition. Althogether 190 species and varieties are treated of, mostly by statements of their measurements and variations, descriptions of their colours, and information about their geographical distribution. The chapter 'Schlussfolgerungen' (pp. 519-565) contains a discussion of zoogeographic questions and the climatic colour variations; migration times observed are tabulated" (Anker 447). B.M. (Nat.         KINSEI KIJIN-DEN

      18. Very Good. [EHON] Mikuma Katen, artist. KINSEI KIJIN-DEN, 5 vols. Kyoto, Edo & Osaka. n.d. [1860's?]. String-bound Japanese-style fukuro toji, in textured blue-grey covers with printed paper title labels. 40 single page and 2 double page b+w woodcuts, largely depicting the subject matter of the title: TALES OF ECCENTRICS FROM RECENT YEARS. Originally printed in 1790, this is a deservedly famous and oft-reprinted work in Japan. The KIJIN_DEN catalogues the eccentricities and eccentrics of the late 18th Century - a time of florescence of the "bunjin" literati ideal in Japan. The bunjin created an esthetically pure environment in the midst of the bustle (and corruption) of everyday life. The initial exemplars were those scholars and artists who withdrew from public life in China after the fall of the Ming Dynasty to the alien Manchus in the mid-17th Century. The KIJIN-DEN represents one of the efforts by the Japanese to domesticate a Chinese cultural import and find native representatives of the literati ideal. The KIJIN-DEN is interesting for its exploration of the art world in Japan- for example, there is a domestic scene of the painters Ikeno Taiga and wife Gyokuran, among others. Indeed, there are many women depicted in the KIJIN-DEN. (See JAPANESE WOMEN ARTISTS 1600-1900) Also see Ryerson 416, Mitchell 364, Hillier/Ravicz 22. The condition is very good over all, the printings are late (this edition being some 60-70 years after the original printing by Hayashi Bunkindo). There was a second series done some few years later, but this first series is complete as issued in 5 volumes.

        Harrogate manuscript school albums

St. John's School, Bishop Thornton, Harrogate: 1860-62.. 3 exquisite school manuscript copybooks compiled between 1860 and 1862 by John Alfred Robinson, a pupil at St. John's School, Bishop Thornton, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, when he was aged 11 to 13. The three books between them contain some 175 leaves (350 pages) of neatly written pen and ink mathematical, mercantile and trade problems, questions and answers with section "Chapter" headings illustrated or decorated in a variety of individual styles. Each volume is 7.5 x 9.5 inches, 20 x 25 cms, and bound in marbled boards, roan leather corners and spines, bindings a touch worn but firm and without damage. At least some of the practical problems set out within the various sections in the books are transcribed word-for-word from Francis Walkingame's "The Tutor's Assistant" and Michael Walsh's "A New System of Mercantile Arithmetic", each of which ran to several editions in the mid-1800s.Well executed and complete early Victorian school copybooks are rare; sets of three from consecutive years from one single identified pupil from a known school seldom come onto the market.Although at school in Bishop Thornton, John Alfred Robinson lived at Warsill, a nearby village, being the son of John and Mary Robinson. Little is known of his subsequent life beyond that he had musical ability from an early age playing piccolo and fiddle and that he became reasonably prosperous and well-settled. A photograph album owned and annotated by his grand-children's family in the 1930s (providing much opportunity for further research, included in this collection and containing one or two photographs of him) shows that in later life he lived at Strawberrydale Lodge, Harrogate, before dying in 1933, aged 84. Very slight foxing to a few plates. Complete with 14 lithographs, colored by hand. Included are beautiful depictions of Taglioni, Rosati, Ferraris, Zina Richard, Marquet , Fiocre, Cassegrain, Emarote, Emma Livry, Caroline Plunkett, Vibon, and Lefevre. Les Danseuses de L'Opera is considered to be among the most charming of 19th century ballet prints. An elegant simplicity infuses the portraits. The prints are carefully hand colored and some are heightened in gold. The portfolio was published by Les Modes Parisiennes, the foremost fashion publication of the time. The prints provide an excellent look at the ballet costumes of the time which were then greatly influenced by national and folk dress. The complete portfolio is rare. Marie-Alexander "Menuet" Alophe (1912-1863) was an important Parisian painter and lithographer who did numerous albums and portraits. While he was most at home illustrating the fashionable life of Paris, he also was commissioned to do portraits of the royal family. Toward the end of his career, he founded an important photographic studio (Benezit). References: DDM 43; Leslie, no. 7; Magrile, 188; Niles & Leslie I., 7.

Two tintype stereographs taken at Saratoga Springs of Morton family

Saratoga Springs ca. 1860 1875 [Saratoga Springs, ca. 1860-1875]. Images 2 3/4 x 2 1/8 in.; mounted in standard 3 x 7 card. Tintype stereographs in card viewing sleeves with gilt paint frames; stamp on recto of one sleeve, "Taken at Saratoga Springs [...] by A.E. Alden, Artist. From Providence, R.I.". In red cloth wallet, with original snap, gilt lettered "Dr. Lawrence J. Morton. Saratoga", with some internal wear; images fine with exceptional contrast for tintypes; sleeves in very good condition with just slight edgewear . Alden was active in the 1860's and 1870's with studios in Springfield, MA and Providence, RI. Here he captures members of the Morton family, in fine dress; they are most likely on holiday enjoying Saratoga's races and spas. Iron was an unusual medium for the stereograph and is accordingly rare today. "The ferrotype [tintype] is the rarest form of stereograph" (Darrah, p. 16). A charming record of 19th century souvenir photography, complete with the original owner's wallet case

Kaladlit assilialiait / Grønlandske Træsnit. [Greenlandic Woodcuts].

39 + 2 woodcuts printed in Godthaab, in the printing office of the inspectorate, by L. Møller and R. Berthelsen, 1860. 26,5 x 20,7 cm. 26 leaves. Rebacked with paperlabel, loose. First and last leaf a little worn on edges, last 2 leaves with tears in margin and one plate a little worn in margin, but still a nice and attractive copy. In modern cloth-box with leatherlabels on spine.. After the publishing of "Grønlandske Folkesagn" [Greenlandic Legends], Rink wanted to draw further attention to the existence of the Greenlandic printing house and the artistic ability of the native Greenlanders. So, as he writes to C.C. Rafn (translater of the Icelandic sagas) may 11, 1860, he had made a publication called "Grønlandske Træsnit" [Greenlandic Woodcuts]. It was published in a French, English and Danish versions. We know from Rink's archives, that only 50 copies were made of the French and the English version, and there is no reason to believe that any more was printed in the Danish edition as most of the woodcuts were known from the Legends. Except from the first 9 woodcuts, which are of ethnographic interest, all the woodcuts come from the "Grönlandske Folkesagn" [The Greenlandic Legends]. The title-vignette, which shows the church, the training college, and the inspector residence, was until 1899 used as "head" on the newspaper "Atuagagdliutit". All the woodcuts are done by native Greenlanders, most of them by Aron from Kanqueq and Rasmus Bertelsen.Nothing indicates an income from sale of the publication in the archives of Rink and it is therefore presumable that they were given as gifts to make publicity for the printing office

        (Cobweb-Style Valentine)

(N.p., c. 1860). Octavo. Single-sheet valentine. This "cobweb"-style valentine was so-named for its intricate lacework and circular central device, which, in this instance, is decorated with flowers. This circular element pulls out, creating a delicate, detailed peep show labeled, "Road to Happiness," which depicts two lovers sitting on a bench in a garden with a church in the background. A spray of flowers on the front bears an embossed medallion with a bouquet of flowers and a pineapple, which is wrapped with a banner reading, "Listen to me my love." Besides this sentiment, the card bears no other text and is not inscribed. The valentine is covered with fine white paper lace over a pale green background, with gold- and copper-painted embossing. Embossing is slightly rubbed, else a fine example of a highly unusual valentine. (Lee, pp.60-61, 127).

Ungdom og Galskab. Syngestykke i to Acter af J.B.E. Dupuy. Claveer-Udtog.

Hornemann & Erslev, København (1860). Folio. 167+(4) sider. Stukne nodeplancher med 3 blade med indledende tekst. Litograferet titelblad.
