E. Whitefield's Views of Chicago

Remarkable and rare grouping of five color lithographs from Edwin Whitefield's series of seven downtown Chicago scenes, lithographed and printed by Charles Shober in Chicago. The prints each measure about 10¼" X 18¼", and all are uniformly matted and framed to 26½" X 20½. In order of issuance: "View of Illinois and Michigan Central Depot & c. From the Corner of Madison St. and Michigan Avenue" (1860). "View of Clark & Wells St. Bridges From the Foot of River St." (1861). "View of Michigan Avenue & c. From Sturges & Buckingham's Elevator" (1861). "View of Rush St. Bridge & c. From Nortons Block River St." (1861). "Michigan Terrace Michigan Avenue Looking towards the Central Depot" (1863). The coloring on all are bright and delicate, the condition near fine. These rare individual prints seldom come on the market, and a near complete set of five of the seven together is extraordinarily unusual. Many were of course lost in the Chicago Fire of 1871. In addition, this rare grouping has an exceptional provenance in that they come from the collection of Adlai E. Stevenson III (b. 1930), former United States senator from Illinois -- who in turn inherited them from his father, Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), two-term Illinois governor and two-time candidate for U.S. president. Their precise history within the family is not recorded, but it seems likely that Governor Stevenson may have displayed them in his offices while a practicing attorney in Chicago in the late 1930s. It's not recorded whether they were handed down to him, but if so they came from his father, Illinois secretary of state Lewis G. Stevenson (1868-1929) or his grandfather, U.S. vice president Adlai E. Stevenson I (1835-1914); it's also possible they were handed down from the governor's other grandfather, Abraham Lincoln's friend and supporter Jesse W. Fell (1808-87). While the frames are rather worn and could easily be replaced, they appear to date from Governor Stevenson's time and therefore represent an integral part of this rare grouping's history.

Jahrhundert. München, Bruckmann, 1982, Bd. III, S. 395).

Signed by the artist at lower right in ink. Some light foxing and wear; small hole to upper right quadrant not affecting drawing. On wove paper. . "After years of neglect, Thomas’ work has seen a considerable revival in the last two decades of the 20th century, with major performances, at least of Mignon and Hamlet, being mounted in France, Great Britain and the USA. Nouveau Jeu de Loto Géographique et Universel ou Tableaux des Capitales de L'Univers

Paris: Chromol de Engelmann et Graf, c., 1860. Loto Game, consisting of 18 pictorial game cards, each illustrated with five lithographic scenes, one small cloth bag containing glass counters, one large cloth bag containing 90 numbered circular timber tokens, folio rule sheet printed on yellow paper; all contained in the original decorated card box measuring 224 x 280 mm., with colour-printed lid, decorated in gold; some slight ageing to lid otherwise in fine original condition. A rare and exquisitely produced geographical lotto game, featuring lithographs of major cities and ports of the world. There are 90 countries and principalities featured in Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa and America, and each is represented by an illustration and brief description of population, exports and industries. Many of the representations of recently-settled Pacific destinations such as Hawaii, Tahiti and the Marquesas are drawn from published voyage accounts. The fine depiction of Sydney Harbour is very closely modelled on the view "Vooloo-mooloo au Port Jackson" which was published in the official account of La Place's grand voyage in La Favorite. This view had originally been drawn in Sydney by the voyage's artist Barthelemy Lauvergne, and was prepared for publication as an aquatint by Sainson. "Nouveau Jeu de Loto…" is a particularly fine example of the deluxe nineteenth-century French children's games - beautiful and practical educational devices which made drawing-room geographical study a pleasure. The fine lithographs were printed by Engelmann and Graf, the company established by pioneering French lithographer Godefroy Engelmann. Scarce when complete and especially so when in such fine condition.

NOTES ON NURSING: What It Is and What It Is Not

London:: Harrison,, [1860].. First Edition, Second Issue.. 8vo, pp. 79. Bound in original pebbled limp cloth (some nicks to the spine cloth), moderate foxing throughout. Former owner's name on the title-page. With advertisements on the yellow endpapers for "Burke's Peerage" for 1860, but without the notice, "The right of translation is reserved" on title. Bishop & Goldie, p.17; Garrison & Morton 1612; Norman 1602. Skretkowicz's detailed examination of over 100 copies has revealed an indiscriminate variation in binding, end-papers (both colours and type settings) and typographic corrections. He states that "virtually all copies examined are made up of different combinations of sheets in many varying states. This binding together of mixtures of sheets in different states occurs almost immediately, possibly within hours of beginning production. Given the considerable number of different states of each inner and outer forme in every sheet, the idea of attempting to establish with certainty any specific `issue' of `Notes on Nursing' beyond the first is utterly impractical. Nightingale (1829-1910) is called the founder of modern nursing as she was the one to raise it to the status of a trained profession. Her Nightingale School for Nurses, which opened in 1860, sent nurses all over the earth to establish training schools. "Florence Nightingale's 79-page monograph reflects the intelligence, efficiency, and administrative talent of the woman who inaugurated the professional training of nurses in England and, indirectly, in the United States... The need for radical reform in the care of the sick was made evident to Miss Nightingale... through service in the barracks hospital in Scutari during the Crimean War. So effectively did she cut through ancient regulations in establishing a clean and efficiently run army hospital that, on her return to England, she was asked to establish a training school for nurses... Notes on Nursing was written with simplicity and direct common sense, enlivened by occasional sharp wit... Notes on Nursing is one of the seminal books of the modern world" (Lilly, 215).

Fine studio sized sepia profile full length portrait by photographer /sculptor Adam Salamon

      Paris, 1860.
Original Portrait by Adam-Salomon

Rayer, Pierre François Olive (1793-1867). Sepia-toned portrait photograph of Rayer in middle age, by Antoine Samuel Adam-Salomon (1818-81). 275 x 212 mm. Paris, circa 1860. Minor damage at corners due to removal from mounting, traces of former mounting on verso.

Excellent, rare , and good-sized portrait photograph by Adam-Salomon of the dermatologist and pathologist Rayer, author of the classic Traité théorique et pratique des maladies de la peau (1826-27; G-M 3989). The photograph is typical of the work of Adam-Salomon, who originally worked as a sculptor, but

turned to portrait photography under the influence of the Munich photographer Franz Hanfstaengel. Adam-Salomon's antique poses, making much use of light and shade to give painterly effects, were inspired by Classical sculpture and painting and incorporated expensive fabrics and settings. He also favoured heavy retouching of the negatives, for which he was criticized by some contemporaries. He was, however, much admired for the imposing character of many of his portraits . . . Some of those hostile to photography, such as Lamartine, were persuaded to consider it as an art by the work of Adam-Salomon. He founded his studio in Paris in 1859, working on reproductions of works of art as well as portraits of the rich bourgeoisie, and he proposed working on a portrait gallery of European notables. He was made a member of the Société Française de Photographie in 1870 and received the Légion d'honneur the same year ("Antoine-Samuel Adam-Salomon," Answers [internet reference]).

The photograph shows Rayer dressed in brocade vest and frock coat and standing in front of a classical pillar or column, with a velvet-draped table next to him on which are stacked two old books. This rare photograph was purchased in an auction that contained a few items owned by Rayer's descendants.

Autograph letter signed, concerning several of his inventions

      1860.
Autograph Letter Signed from the Designer of the "Monitor"

ERICSSON, John (1803-89). A.L.s. dated March 26, [18]60, to an unknown recipient. 2-1/2 pp., on lined paper embossed with a small steam locomotive and the letters "P. & P. in the upper left corner. 247 x 195 mm. Creased where folded, small tear mended, but fine overall.

A very fine, detailed letter from the prolifically inventive Swedish-born engineer John Ericsson, whose many accomplishments include the invention of a screw propeller for steamships, a rotary steam engine, the first English steam-driven fire engine, and his enormously popular "caloric" engine. This last, a hot-air engine designed to use heat more directly and efficiently than its steam-powered counterpart, was the first mass-produced heat-powered engine; in various incarnations, it satisfied the growing need for small and medium-sized sources of industrial power throughout the nineteenth century.

Ericsson's most famous achievement, however, was his design for the Union Navy's ironclad warship Monitor; the Monitor's decisive victory over the Confederate ironclad Merrimac in March 1862 marked a turning point not only in the course of the Civil War, but in the history of warship design and construction. In later life Ericsson interested himself in alternative sources of power, particularly solar and tidal energy.

The present letter, written almost exactly two years before the Monitor's defeat of the Merrimac, discusses several of Ericsson's inventions-a hydraulic pump, a "swing machine," an air hoister and a telegraphic machine-as well as the difficulties Ericsson had encountered in obtaining the necessary support and encouragement to proceed with the patenting of these inventions. The last paragraph of the letter contains a reference to a "new" caloric engine, which was "nearly ready"; Ericsson continued to improve the caloric engine to the end of his life.

Ericsson's imperious and combative temperament is apparent throughout the letter, particularly in the postscript, in which he states that "I should prefer the 'cove' you allude to showing his hand before I have my patent claim. Under my general principle I will be able to hit him all the harder-so with others who may feel inclined to tread on my & our toes just now." DAB. [COLLECTION OF SEVEN AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED BY FRANKLIN DELANO WILLIAMS CONCERNING HIS BUSINESS VENTURES IN CHINA]

Hong Kong & Macao. 1860-1864.. 8pp. total. Loose, single sheets. Near fine. Seven letters written by American merchant Franklin Delano Williams discussing business affairs in China. Williams was a partner in the China-based trading company Wetmore, Williams & Co. He is listed as living in Hong Kong in 1859 and is recorded as being elected treasurer of the Shanghai Literary and Scientific Society (later the North China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society) in 1857. He is likely a distant relative of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, as the Delano family is known to have been heavily involved in the China trade in the 19th-century. The letters here are addressed to an Owen, though some are addressed to W.W. Cowles, Esq. It is likely that Owen was a brother or other relative, as Williams makes reference to "mother" in the letters. The first letter, dated Oct. 27, 1860 and penned on company stationery, refers to an upcoming trip home: "I intend to leave for home on the 29th inst per mail steamer, stopping on the way for a few days in France and England. The probability is, that I shall (D.V.) be with you in two to four weeks after these lines come to hand." A letter from June 10, 1862, discusses primarily business matters but also comments on the American Civil War: "Why don't you put down those infernal rebels? Crush 'em out!" In a letter dated at Macao on October 11, 1862, Williams brings up his intention to leave Macao to seek better business opportunities elsewhere in China. "I think business at Macao will be pretty much over, in a few weeks. I intend to take a look at Shanghai, then, & shall be likely to return & locate at Hong Kong where I am promised a good business if I will establish myself at that part." Later letters indicate that he did as promised and resettled in Hong Kong - the next four letters are all dated at Hong Kong. On Jan. 13, 1863, he writes further on the Civil War, saying: "I think prospects look very bad at home. The Rep. party must drop their ultraisms & go in for Union only: let the 'nigger' alone for the present, or there's no hope & much to fear." The final three letters all concern business affairs. A letter dated Feb. 27, 1863 discusses payments owed and received, as well as the plans of a mutual acquaintance. "I think George has done right to return to China if he will keep steady, & he will do well, otherwise not." Dated July 11, 1864: "We have quite hot weather, & I am not very well & short of help temporarily, so can't write much." And in the final letter, dated Oct. 14, 1864, he discusses business and mutual acquaintances, writing, "Bekie arrived here last night, & proposes making me a visit of some weeks. She is very well. George is looking for something to do at Shanghai, & seems to be in good spirits. I heard from Breck today, who says he has changed his mind again & concluded to remain at Hankow for 6 months longer." An interesting group of correspondence from an American businessman in China during the Civil War.

JOURNAL OF RESEARCHES INTO THE NATURAL HISTORY AND GEOLOGY OF THE COUNTRIES VISITED DURING THE VOYAGE OF H.M.S. BEAGLE ROUND THE WORLD under the command of Capt. Fitz Roy, R.N.

London, John Murray, 1860.Second edition, tenth thousand, 1860. 8vo, approximately 195 x 115 mm, 7¾ x 4½ inches, a few wood engraved illustrations and diagrams in the text, pages: xv, 519 including index, plus 32 page catalogue with adverts dated April 1867, bound in the original publisher's zigzag pattern green cloth, blind stamped decoration to covers, gilt decoration, gilt rules and gilt lettering to spine, original light brown endpapers. Tiny crease at tail of spine, gilt decoration just slightly rubbed in a couple of places, a touch of rubbing to corners, tiny bump to lower corner of lower cover, inner paper hinges not cracked, neat inscription to front pastedown, title page faintly browned, slight faint foxing to Contents table which is printed on different paper from the rest of the book, text pages bright and clean throughout. A very good plus copy. This is Darwin's first published book and is the most often read and stands second only to The Origin of Species as the most often printed. Referred to universally today as the Voyage of the Beagle, it is an important travel book in its own right and its relation to the background of Darwin's evolutionary ideas has often been stressed. The tenth thousand which this is provides the definitive text and sees the first appearance of the Postscript dated February 1st 1860 on page vii in which Darwin takes the opportunity to correct some errors. This is the first time it was published in the green cloth binding in the same style as the first three John Murray editions of On the Origin of Species. See Freeman, The Works of Charles Darwin, pages 31 - 36 and No. 20. Freeman states that inserted advertisements in our edition may be as late as September 1868.
