A booke called the treasure for traveilers, . . .London, [T. Dawson for] T. Woodcock, 1578. 5 parts in 1 volume. 4to. With full-page woodcut coat of arms of the dedicatee, full-page woodcut diagrammatic surveying map, 36 woodcuts in the text and woodcut factotums. Late 18th-century half calf (neatly rebacked).

Adams & Waters, English maritime books 252; ESTC S104686; Johnson, Astronomical thought in Renaissance England 176 & 310; Kelso, Doctrine of the English gentleman in the 16th century 137; Luborsky & Ingram 3432; Parker, Books to build an empire 92-93 & 248; Sitwell, Four centuries of special geography 117. First edition of the first book in English on practical matters of geography and navigation, intended for pilots, ship's captains, sailors, soldiers, carpenters, surveyors and traders. Grounded in Bourne's own experience and addressed to those unschooled in mathematics, it boasts a string of firsts. It contains the first popular explanation in English of surveying by triangulation and the first illustration of this method applied to an actual location (at a scale of 1:52,800). It is the first English book to describe the volumes, capacities, and proportions of ships' hulls-for loading and storing commercial merchandise, for getting ships over bars or shoals and for raising sunken vessels for salvage. It is the first book to set out the sizes and weights of cordage and give rules for their computation. And it offers the first explanation of ocean currents in English, including the North and South Atlantic Drift, on which the English relied in their subsequent aggressive expansion to the east and west. He also discusses the formation and peopling of the Americas. The treasure also aided spies, brigands, explorers and gentleman tourists. The Preface "advised persons going into strange countries to observe the state of civilization of the region, the nature of the fortifications, access to the sea, the government, laws, buildings, natural enemies and friends among neighbouring states, the major items in trade, commodities produced, customs and tolls, manner of waging war, etc." (Parker). It represents a peculiarly "English" tradition, independent of Continental models, in which the traveller especially values the common weal. The Macclesfield copy, with his 1860 armorial North Library bookplate. Title-page soiled, marginal worm-holes in first four and last six leaves, affecting text only in the errata (which is very slightly shaved) and 1 shoulder note. Otherwise in very good condition.

Mr. Douglas in Pennsylvania. His Reception at Reading --- His Speech on Breckinridge, Disunion and Fusion

[Reading, PA, 1860. Unrecorded broadside relating to Stephen Douglas's failed bid for the Presidency in the Election of 1860. Interestingly, Douglas was among the first candidates to actively campaign in person, touring the country in advance of the election (active campaigning by candidates was seen as un-presidential and frowned upon!). This broadside reports on a campaign stop in Reading, Pennsylvania, printing much of the northern Democrat Douglas's anti-southern Democrat (i.e. anti-John Breckinridge) speech. Abraham Lincoln would of course end up winning the election, with Douglas winning 29% of the popular vote (second to Lincoln) but only 12 electoral votes. Letterpress broadside, text in two columns.

Paris Moderne: Plan d'une ville Modèle que l'Auteur a appelée Novutopie

Paris: Libraires du Palais-Royal, 1860. Duodecimo, uncut; original blue paper wrappers, manuscript inscription on front cover. First edition: a proposal for a 'new utopia' founded on pacifist principles. In 1859, a Franco-Italian alliance had sought to repel Austrian aggression in northern Italy, but the French people had been sickened by the losses, and Napoleon III had hastily signed an armistice. It is in this moment of anti-war sentiment that Paris Moderne is situated. Whilst the author proudly claims to have served forty years in the army, this is an essentially pacifist plea in which both the political goals and the heavy loss of life are brought into question in a movement which anticipates the role of war in a mechanized society. That is, battles are reduced to the tragic mathematics of attrition so familiar from later conflicts: in the case of the battle of Eylau, four thousand French in return for six to eight thousand Austrian. His fear is that this culture of war has become so engrained in the public that whole generations exist who regard war as normal, and for whom literature has become nothing more than the bulletins of armies. Although he dreams of a new utopia not brought up 'au bruit du tambour,' he poignantly quotes Cobden: 'La guerre viendra, hélas! toujours trop tôt…'.

        Barn Owl [Barn Owl]

[John Woodhouse Audubon], New York 1860 - A highly dramatic composition in which Audubon shows his mastery of images that capture the moment. A barn owl has returned at day-break with a chipmunk grasped in its talons, it alights on a branch at which point its mate approaches demanding a share of the spoils of the hunt. 'This species is altogether nocturnal. and when disturbed during the day, flies in an irregular manner, as if at a loss how to look for a place of refuge. the flight of the Barn Owl is light, regular, and much protracted. It passes through the air at an elevation of thirty or forty feet, in perfect silence, and pounces on its prey like a Hawk, often waiting for a fair opportunity from the branch of a tree, on which it alights for the purpose. This species is never found in the depth of the forests, but confines itself to the borders of the woods around large savannas or old abandoned fields. where its food. is found in abundance. I am not aware that it ever emits any cry or note, as other owls are wont to do; but it produces a hollow hissing sound, continued for minutes at a time. Its hearing is extremely acute, and as it marks your approach. it instantly swells out its plumage, extends its wings and tail, hisses, and clacks its mandibles with force and rapidity.' (Audubon, Birds of America, New York & Philadelphia: 1840-1844, vol.I, p.128). 'This long-legged.bird is the owl of Gray's Elegy in a Country Churchyard and other English literary works. It is the spook that haunts old barns, belfries, great hollow trees and caves. [Audubon proposed that the American owl was a distinct species from the barn owl of Europe.] This judgement has been overruled and today American and European birds are considered conspectic. Indeed, few species are more cosmopolitan. The barn owl is nearly worldwide in tropical and temperate regions; in the Americas it ranges from southern Canada to Tierra del Fuego, avoiding the higher altitudes' (R.T. & V.M.Peterson Audubon's Birds of America, 1981, no.234). Susanne Low, A Guide to Audubon's Birds of America New Haven & New York: 2002, p. 354. Chromolithograph by Julius Bien.

Many of those had been the work of the distinguished Philadelphia surveyor, G. H. Hopkins, who was responsible for this accomplished general map. Each township in the state is individually coloured, and many schools, churches, cemeteries, post offices, stores, mines, mills, factories, iron works, etc., are located throughout rural Connecticut. Nine inset maps give detailed plans of the cities of Middletown, Waterbury, Stamford, Norwalk, New London, Bridgeport, Hartford, Norwich, and New Haven. A table gives population statistics for Connecticut's eight counties, and for the major towns and cities in each county. Grist mills and sawmills are shown, as are railroads and common roads. The mapping of the Connecticut coastline is especially fine, giving depths for the entire stretch of Long Island Sound, and showing several islands lying off the coast. This map is the second edition, the first having been printed in 1859, and is an excellent detailed look at Connecticut on the eve of the Civil War. Not in Phillips' America . Rumsey 141; Thompson 181; Ristow, p.388 (ref). Copper-engraved wall map, with full original colour, expertly repaired, backed with new linen, trimmed in blue cloth, on contemporary rollers, in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        E. Whitefield's Views of Chicago

Remarkable and rare grouping of five color lithographs from Edwin Whitefield's series of seven downtown Chicago scenes, lithographed and printed by Charles Shober in Chicago. The prints each measure about 10¼" X 18¼", and all are uniformly matted and framed to 26½" X 20½. In order of issuance: "View of Illinois and Michigan Central Depot & c. From the Corner of Madison St. and Michigan Avenue" (1860). "View of Clark & Wells St. Bridges From the Foot of River St." (1861). "View of Michigan Avenue & c. From Sturges & Buckingham's Elevator" (1861). "View of Rush St. Bridge & c. From Nortons Block River St." (1861). "Michigan Terrace Michigan Avenue Looking towards the Central Depot" (1863). The coloring on all are bright and delicate, the condition near fine. These rare individual prints seldom come on the market, and a near complete set of five of the seven together is extraordinarily unusual. Many were of course lost in the Chicago Fire of 1871. In addition, this rare grouping has an exceptional provenance in that they come from the collection of Adlai E. Stevenson III (b. 1930), former United States senator from Illinois -- who in turn inherited them from his father, Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), two-term Illinois governor and two-time candidate for U.S. president. Their precise history within the family is not recorded, but it seems likely that Governor Stevenson may have displayed them in his offices while a practicing attorney in Chicago in the late 1930s. It's not recorded whether they were handed down to him, but if so they came from his father, Illinois secretary of state Lewis G. Stevenson (1868-1929) or his grandfather, U.S. vice president Adlai E. Stevenson I (1835-1914); it's also possible they were handed down from the governor's other grandfather, Abraham Lincoln's friend and supporter Jesse W. Fell (1808-87). While the frames are rather worn and could easily be replaced, they appear to date from Governor Stevenson's time and therefore represent an integral part of this rare grouping's history.

London: Nattali and Bond, 1860. Two volumes, large octavo, 14 fine engraved plates, with many additional textual engravings; contemporary half brown morocco over marbled boards, top edge gilt, minor foxing but a very good copy, preserved in a cloth slipcase. The second Nicolas edition reprinted from Nicolas's Pickering edition of 1836, which is considered one of the most beautiful and thorough fishing books ever published.

Jahrhundert. München, Bruckmann, 1982, Bd. III, S. 395).

Nouveau Jeu de Loto Géographique et Universel ou Tableaux des Capitales de L'Univers

Paris: Chromol de Engelmann et Graf, c., 1860. Loto Game, consisting of 18 pictorial game cards, each illustrated with five lithographic scenes, one small cloth bag containing glass counters, one large cloth bag containing 90 numbered circular timber tokens, folio rule sheet printed on yellow paper; all contained in the original decorated card box measuring 224 x 280 mm., with colour-printed lid, decorated in gold; some slight ageing to lid otherwise in fine original condition. A rare and exquisitely produced geographical lotto game, featuring lithographs of major cities and ports of the world. There are 90 countries and principalities featured in Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa and America, and each is represented by an illustration and brief description of population, exports and industries. Many of the representations of recently-settled Pacific destinations such as Hawaii, Tahiti and the Marquesas are drawn from published voyage accounts. The fine depiction of Sydney Harbour is very closely modelled on the view "Vooloo-mooloo au Port Jackson" which was published in the official account of La Place's grand voyage in La Favorite. This view had originally been drawn in Sydney by the voyage's artist Barthelemy Lauvergne, and was prepared for publication as an aquatint by Sainson. "Nouveau Jeu de Loto…" is a particularly fine example of the deluxe nineteenth-century French children's games - beautiful and practical educational devices which made drawing-room geographical study a pleasure. The fine lithographs were printed by Engelmann and Graf, the company established by pioneering French lithographer Godefroy Engelmann. Scarce when complete and especially so when in such fine condition.

Following Election Day of 1860, when it became apparent that Abraham Lincoln would become the next President of the United States, the Governor of South Carolina, William H. Gist, followed the request of the state legislature and proclaimed November 21st an official "day of Fasting, Humiliation, and Prayer, . . . inviting the clergy and people of all denominations . . . to assemble at their respective places of worship to implore the direction and blessing of Almighty God in this our hour of difficulty, and to give us one heart and one mind to oppose, by all just and proper means, every encroachment upon our rights."
