Normann Coll, 1437. DSB IX, 101. REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE OF ARRANGEMENT FOR LAYING THE CORNER STONE OF THE NEW SYNAGOGUE OF THE PORTUGUESE CONGREGATION "MICKVE ISRAEL," MADE TO THE BUILDING COMMITTEE. TOGETHER WITH THE ADDRESS DELIVERED ON THAT OCCASION, BY

Philadelphia: Collins, Printer, 705 Jayne Street, 1859. 1st edition. 5619. Original printed wrappers, 8vo 15, [1 blank] pages. Singerman 1593. Mickve Israel [Hope of Israel], one of the oldest Philadelphia synagogues, was founded in the 1740s by Sephardic Jews. Known as the 'Synagogue of the American Revolution, ' its early members included Haym Solomon and the Gratz family. Benjamin Franklin contributed to its first building fund. This was its third building, constructed on 7th Street, north of Arch. Isaac Leeser presided over the congregation from 1829 to 1850; Sabato Morais succeeded him. Morais was its Rabbi for 46 years. The list of corner-stone and door- post purchasers included A. S. Wolf, who purchased the North door-post of the north door for fifteen dollars, in honor of H. Polock. Other luminaries of Philadelphia Jewry participated in the ceremonies. Wolf was treasurer and Gabay of the Congregation. Articles deposited in the cornerstone are listed, including newspapers, coins and tokens dated 1859, "A gold quarter dollar of California mintage, being deposited by Clarence A. Hart, aged 9 years. " The Committee of Arrangement consisted of Edwd. S. Mawson, Joseph L. Moss, and Isaac J. Phillips. Rabbi Morais's discourse is printed. Morais, an abolitionist and founder of the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York, counsels, "If there be pride in us, if the vanity of exhibiting a more sightly structure than others possess, impelled us to designate this place as our future Synagogue...let us then bury first such unholy feelings in the bosom of the earth. " Also printed is a prayer in Hebrew, composed by Morais. OCLC lists 5 copies worldwide [Penn, JTS, YU, NYPL, HUC) Light wear, Very Good Condition (KH-6-63)

        On Liberty

John W. Parker, London 1859 - "On Liberty" by John Stuart Mill. Published in 1859 by John W. Parker and Son in London. Second edition, as stated on the title page. The book measures approximately 7.75" x 5.25", and is 207 pages long, with an additional 8 pages of advertisements. The book is in good minus condition. Moderate wear and staining to the brown cloth boards. Tearing and chipping to the cloth on the spine. The book is a little cocked with an overbite. Underlining and notations in pen and pencil throughout the text. Previous owner's bookplate (Louis Blake Duff) on the front pastedown. Pen inscription on the front endpaper and preface. Ownership signatures penned on the title page. A key work by Mill, partially based on Utilitarian doctrine, remarkable for establishing philosophically the virtue of the liberty of the individual as an absolute good for the community as a whole, rather than simply as a relative virtue, in relation to tyranny and oppression. In large part, the modern liberal concept of democracy depends on the ethical theory expressed by Mill; much of what we now consider innate to our belief in democratic rule and the appropriate limits of the power of government over the individual was first articulated in these pages.         The Coming Man. A Tragedy.

      - An extraordinary love missive, from a lovelorn lady whose long wait for her suitor goes unrewarded. The suitor in the graphic story is a Mr. Jones, while the booklet bears the inscription of a John L. Flagg, dated September 11th, 1859. Was he in fact the suitor, or some confidante of the artist? Or was the story not autobiographical at all, but rather just a creative expression of the plight that women such as the presumed artist must endure? To us, it should be of little consequence either way, and who is to whether true or fictional makes the story the more poignant! The story is told in seven captioned pen and ink drawings that show a young lady with a hoop dress excitedly reading a letter from the beloved Mr. Jones that he would be coming. We then see her practicing on the mandolin for him, preparing a pudding for him, setting up a room for him, dressing up for him, waiting for him by a window, only to burst out in tears upon the receipt of a second letter than he wouldn't be coming. The drawings are the work of an accomplished amateur, in our judgment, their touch of naivete an aspect of their charm. The artist includes details such as furnishings and tschotschkes, but so with a sketchy economy that avoids distraction while convincingly conveying the setting. One might even say that in this she showed a sureness that transcends the typical amateur restraint. Perspective is only most loosely adhered to -- it is impossible to know whether this was a deliberate choice or not, but it also is something that curiously enhances the pictures. In terms of the artistry, the cleverest manifestation is unquestionably the title page in which she creates the lettering out of male and female full figures (and one horse) and the letters for "A Tragedy" out of their faces. The best word to describe this is "brilliant", and part of its brilliance is its subtlety -- one may well miss it at first glance. We assume the author/artist had initials "N.B." since the inscription states it is from N.B., but of this we can't be certain. We also can not tell whether the source were English or American, but we lean towards the latter, mainly because the young woman would appear to be of comfortable means and yet there is no sign of a servant, even when she prepares a pudding. That was unusual on both side sides of the ocean, undoubtedly, but probably less so in America. The setting up a room for Mr. Jones is also an enigma. Was she running an inn of sorts? Or was he a friend of the family? No respectable woman would be having a male caller stay overnight otherwise. 8vo. 22 by 16 cm. Eight leaves. Age toning and light wear. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Rubáiyat of Omar Khayyam, the Astronomer-Poet of Persia.

London: Bernard Quaritch,, 1859. Translated into English Verse. Octavo. Original grey paper wrappers, title printed black to front cover. Housed in a blue linen cloth chemise and blue morocco pull-off case by Riviere & Son. From the library of Natalie Knowlton Blair (1887?1951), with her bookplate to the front pastedown. Some light spots to covers, faint mark to front cover. An excellent copy. First edition, one of a print-run of 250 copies only made at FitzGerald's expense, and with his correction in manuscript to page 4. Early in 1858 FitzGerald had sent 35 of the "less wicked" verses he had translated from Omar to Fraser's Magazine. Fraser's would not publish them, however, so in 1859, after adding 40 more verses, FitzGerald issued the collection of 75 as a book published anonymously at his own expense. FitzGerald "made a present" to Quaritch of 200 of the 250 copies he had printed, and the publisher later reported that he sold "nearly the whole of them" from his penny box "not being able to get more" for them (Prideaux p. 17). Ironically, in 1901 Quaritch was to find himself in the position of buying a fine, unopened copy at Bang's rooms in New York for $260, or 20 guineas. Omar Khayyám (1048?1131) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, and poet, author of about a thousand quatrains. The fact that Omar Khayyám is the most famous poet of the East in the West is entirely due to FitzGerald's celebrated adaptations, which would prove to be the "most popular verse translation into English ever made" (Decker, p. xiv). FitzGerald himself referred to his work on the Rubáiyat as a "transmogrification" rather than translation, describing how he "mashed up" several stanzas into one, and calling the result "A pretty little Eclogue tessellated out of [Omar's] scattered quatrains". It is reasonable to suggest that in its own way the lyrical agnosticism of FitzGerald's Rubáiyat was to be every bit as influential on the advent of as modernism as Darwin's Origin of Species published in the same year. Many of FitzGerald's phrases have entered the common stock of English quotations and allusions.

Leaf from the Diary of George Combe Mann, describing the death of his older brother Horace Mann, Jr., 1868

A single octavo leaf (approximately 6" x 7.75") written on both sides from the Diary of George Combe Mann. One margin a little irregularly cut, affecting a few letters but not affecting the readability of the leaf, old folds, near fine. Both Horace, Jr. and George were the sons of Horace Mann (died 1859), the Father of American Education, and Mary Peabody Mann, one of the illustrious Peabody Sisters, a reformer, teacher, and founder of a successful school for young children (her sister Elizabeth Putnam Peabody was a reformer and pioneer in the creation of kindergartens, and her other sister Sophia Peabody was a painter, and the wife of Nathaniel Hawthorne).Horace and Mary Mann had three sons: Horace Mann, Jr., George Combe Mann, and Benjamin Pickman Mann. The eldest, Horace Mann, Jr. was an accomplished botanist who studied and traveled with Henry David Thoreau. Mann also studied zoology with Louis Agassiz and was responsible for discovering over 100 plants species in Hawaii. Mann was named to head the botanical gardens at Harvard, but died of tuberculosis at age twenty-four before he could fill the position. His personal herbarium of approximately 12,500 sheets was purchased in 1869 by Andrew Dickson White as the first accession into the Cornell University Herbarium. The diary leaf in the 22-year-old George Mann's hand, covers two sides of one leaf, begins on November 11, 1868, the day of his brother's death, and continues on the other side, with entries through November 18th (the entry for the 18th may be incomplete).Mann's entry for November 11th, in a clear and readable hand, is exceedingly poignant:"At a few minutes before 2 p.m. Horace coughed a little harder than usual, and mother spoke to him. He answered 'I was trying to stop a hiccough,' adding, immediately, 'in the eastern provinces they say that is death.' She went out a minute, and returned to find him with his eyes fixed, gasping for breath. She called me, who tried to raise him a little, but he gasped five or six times, at intervals of a few seconds, and ceased to breathe. He had been comfortable all day. After his [d?]rain was driven out this morning he said he almost wished he had it to drive out again, it felt so deliciously. He wanted mother to be with him all the time, kept repeating how comfortable he was, and wanted to continue just as he was. He enjoyed the day, it seemed, as much as any one in his life, so perfectly calm and tranquil was he.But it was the calm which he now enjoys in full. His temperament made living hard, even in health, - an invalid, intolerable. But he lived better than we realized, and in his death I find an untold loss!"On the 13th he notes:"We had service here at 4 o'clock. Dr. Peabody officiated, and Mrs. Gould and Dr. & Mrs. Vaughan sang. Brigham staid here last night."On the 14th: "We went to Providence at 11 o'clock - mother, Aunt Lizzie, Mary Peabody, Dr. Gould, Ben and I, - where we found Aunt Lydia, the Messers and Arthur Knapp. It was a beautiful day and the short service at the grave was very satisfactory. We dined at Aunt Lydia's and returned at 4, getting home at 7 p.m. Everything was calm and quiet. It is all over!"On the 16th: "Mother's 62nd birthday. Went in to Mr. Brigham's office again."On the 17th: "Attended to Horace's accounts in the evening."The entry on the 18th is truncated: "Snow in the night and rain all day - Read 150pp. of Greenleaf on Evidence."Unique primary source material on the death of a promising young botanist. From the estate of Horace Mann, III (died 1978), the son of George Combe Mann. .
