        3 eigenh. Briefe m. Unterschrift.

Triest u. Wien, 1859-1871.. Zus. 11 S., Kl.-8° u. 8°.. [An den österr. Chemiker u. -

        THE AUTOCRAT OF THE BREAKFAST-TABLE

[HOLMES, Oliver Wendell]. THE AUTOCRAT OF THE BREAKFAST-TABLE. Boston: Phillips, Sampson And Co., 1859. 8vo., black full-morocco leather; gilted-worked spine, inner dentelles, and borders; top edge gilt; marbled endpapers. Large Paper Edition. Holmes was apparently displeased with the illustrations in the first trade edition and ordered them excised from this printing. [See BAL 9093]. Signed presentation from Holmes, to poet and journalist John G. Saxe, on front endpaper: "John G. Saxe, from O.W. Holmes." Holmes apparently used this edition for gifts and copies have been noted inscribed to Ralph Waldo Emerson, his family members, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and his wife. Saxe [1816-1887] was admitted to the Vermont bar in 1843 and, due to his interest in literature, he purchase the "Vermont Sentinel" in 1850. He served as state attorney general and was twice the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for governor. Saxe's verses appeared in many of the major magazines of the day and he wrote a number of books. A nice association copy. Holmes' rambling Addisonian essays describe imaginary table-talk at a Boston boarding house. Their success led to three other books in the series: The Professor At The Breakfast-Table (1860); The Poet At The Breakfast-Table (1872); and Over The Teacups (1891). Nr. fine. $1,500.00. Clementina Stirling Graham, 1782-1877, was an English hostess and author. By 1861 Constable employed fifty compositors, making his firm the biggest in Edinburgh. He assumed his son Archibald as a partner in 1865, the firm changing its name to T. and A.         On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection,

London: John Murray,, 1859. or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. Octavo (191 × 117 mm). Contemporary green half calf, maroon label, gilt bands, marbled sides and edges, pale red endpapers. Housed in a dark green quarter morocco solander box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Folding lithographed diagram. Without adverts. Bookplate. Spine gently sunned, inscription just shaved by the binder, an excellent copy. First edition, presentation copy, to Edward William Vernon Harcourt, inscribed by the recipient at the head of the title, "E. W. Harcourt, from the Author, 1859" and with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Presentation copies of the Origin are rare, and no copy is known to have been inscribed by Darwin himself. Darwin had written to the naturalist Harcourt (1825?-1891) on 19 August 1856 asking to borrow his copy of Christian Ludwig Brehm's work on German ornithology, as he wanted "to see how far Brehm goes in splitting species". Earlier in the year they had corresponded about Madeiran birds, on which Harcourt was an expert: Harcourt is cited as a source of information on the subject on p. 391 of the Origin. Before publication of the Origin, Darwin wrote to Murray with an initial list of those he wished to receive presentation copies: the list contains 23 names, and available evidence suggests that all those copies were inscribed by one of Murray's clerks. Harcourt is not among that list; he may have been overlooked and sent a copy a little later, though still in the year of publication. The inscription on the title is in his hand, rather than that of Murray's clerk.

        A Tale of Two Cities

London: Chapman and Hall,, 1859. With illustrations by H. K. Browne. Octavo (214 × 135 mm). Original red half morocco for presentation, marbled boards and endpapers, gilt edges. Custom cloth folding case by James Brockman. Engraved title and frontispiece present, but bound without plates as usual with presentation copies of this title. Joints, inner hinges, and tips skilfully restored by James Brockman, title leaf evenly toned and with small areas of marginal restoration at head, fore edge, and lower outer corner, a very good copy. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title-page: "To Hon: Mrs Watson, From Charles Dickens, Fourth December, 1859." A Tale of Two Cities was published on 21 November 1859. Dickens had a few copies bound for presentation with the frontispiece and engraved title, but without the plates. Other known copies, including those presented by him to George Eliot and Charles Lever, are similarly bound and made up. The text is in first state, with p. 213 misnumbered 113. The recipient, Lavinia Watson, was the widow of the Honourable Richard Watson (1800?-1852). Dickens first met them at Lausanne in 1846 and visited them often at their home, Rockingham Castle, where he performed private theatricals. They were the dedicatees of David Copperfield (1850). Mrs Watson, born Lavinia Jane Quin (1816?-1888), remained a frequent correspondent and trusted confidante of Dickens throughout his life.

Sully Prudhomme's Calling Card with an Autograph Note Signed to Jean Finot

Châtenay-Malabry: Sully Prudhomme, 190_. First edition. [No Binding]. Fine. An Original Sully Prudhomme Calling Card upon which Sully Prudhomme as written an EIGHT-LINE NOTE, DATED AND SIGNED. In this note sent from Châtenay-Malabry [the famous southeastern Paris suburb where Sully Prudhomme lived and where many other literary persons and notable persons in multiple disciplines --- such as Henri de Latouche, François-René (Vicomte de Chateaubriand), Emmanuel Mournier, Paul Ricoeur, and others --- made their home], Sully Prudhomme writes to advise the recipient of his address and to confirm with him a gathering with French poet, Philippe Dufour (1859-1935). Prudhomme also reminds the recipient to bring his latest work with him to the meeting. Philippe Dufour was a member of the so-called Parnassian group and also served as an official of the national Ministry of Public Works. [Parnassianism is a literary style in which the writer strove to produce exact and faultless workmanship using exotic and classical subjects which they treated with rigidity of form and emotional detachment.] The note is addressed to Jean Finot, the French Author, Journalist, and Sociologist known primarily for his opposition to scientific racism. Sully Prudhomme won the 1901 Nobel Prize in Literature "in special recognition of his poetic composition, which gives evidence of lofty idealism, artistic perfection and a rare combination of the qualities of both heart and intellect", making him the first person ever to win the Prize. In Fine condition, the note provides an excellent glimpse into the life of three noted French literary men of the era. AN EXCELLENT AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED BY SULLY PRUDHOMME WITH STRONG LITERARY ASSOCIATIONS.
