        Lezgins.

      - 1863 and 1867 1858 - Pen and watercolour on paper (30.5 x 21 cm), highlighted in gum arabic, pasted on contemporary card and mounted (55 x 37.5 cm); two small marginal tears to watercolour with one partly repaired. Here offered with an engraving after the original drawing (37.8 x 28 cm), 1867, mounted; repaired tear in upper margin. An original drawing by the German born artist showing a group of six Lezgins crossing the Caucasian mountains. The image was made famous by Lev Dmitriev-Kavkazskiy, whose engraving after the original was awarded a large silver medal by the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1873. Theodor Horschelt (1829–1871) probably made the sketch between 1858 and 1863 when he fought on the Russian side in the Caucasus War, having volunteered to join the staff of General Baryatinskiy. Soon after his arrival to the Caucasus in 1858, the artist joined an expedition against the Lezgins. The following year, he was part of a military campaign in Chechnya and participated in an attack on the headquarters of Imam Shamil. For his bravery, Horschelt was honoured with the Grand Cross Star of the Order of Saint Stanislaus and a medal of the Order of St. Anna. It was for drawings of this period that Horschelt was elected to the Russian Academy of Fine Arts. The drawing comes from a private collection of Sarkis Boghossian and was published in his monumental work "Armenian Iconography" that gathers prints and drawings on the subject. Boghossian's biography resembles a thriller novel. Born in 1921 in a small Armenian village in today's Turkey, Boghossian was taken to Marseille at the age of six by his family that fled famine and oppression. Passionate about art, poetry and Armenian culture, he chose a career of bookseller. In 1967 Boghossian opened a rare bookshop in Paris, "Le XIXe siècle", specialising in rare books and engravings related to Armenia. In autumn 1998 the French booksellers' community woke up to shocking news that Boghossian had been found dead in his Parisian flat, tortured and murdered, with a number of valuable books missing from the apartment. Police quickly traced the murderer, who, however, hardly resembled the idea one may have of an assassin. He was a French bookseller of Turkish origin and a renowned scholar with a PhD from Sorbonne specialising in Ottoman and Armenian history. He was apparently in dispute with Boghossian over a number of rare books that the latter kept as a guarantee against a cash loan. The bookseller was arrested and subsequently sentenced to 19 years in prison just when he was due to give a lecture at a conference in Nice titled "The Armenian merchants in the Mediterranean in the eighteenth century". Sarkis Boghossian "Armenian Iconography I" reproduces No. 651 and 652 p.468 - Paris, 1987; Razitta Gadzhikhanova, Dagestanskiy kostium (Epokha, Makhachkala, 2010), p. 151.

Lewis's Great Establishments, The "Great Eastern " (with) Trade card advertising I K Brunel’s steamship Great Eastern

b/w printing on silk, 19 x 19 1/2 inches. The "Great Eastern" was an iron sail and steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and built by J. Scott Russell & Co. In 1858, at the time of her launching, she was the largest ship ever built. She made her first passage to America in 1859, a cruise that was marred by an explosion aboard. She had a checkered career thereafter. Having proved herself impossible to run profitably as a passenger liner, she was converted to a cable-laying ship and set down the first successful trans Atlantic cable. She ended her career as a floating music hall and advertisement for Lewis' department stores. The “Great Eastern” card measures approximately 6 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches and features images of the ship under weigh and a longitudinal section, with specifics given in some detail. It is lithographed on coated stock with color highlights by Meyer & Co. of New York, and copyrighted by Wagstaff & Bro., 1859, in the “Southern District of New York.” The card was undoubtedly meant to coincide with publicity drummed up the the "Great Eastern's" maiden voyage to New York.         Album of Virginia; or, illustration of the old dominion

[Richmond], Virginia, Edward Beyer [but printed by Rau & Son of Dresden and W.Loeillot of Berlin] 1858 - (16 5/8 x 24 ¾ inches). Lithographed throughout. Tinted title with five integral vignettes, 40 tinted plates after Beyer by Rau & Son (18) or W.Loeillot (22). Original deep purple half morocco, upper cloth cover with blind-stamped border surrounding large central title block in gilt `Album of Virginia;/ or,/ Illustration. Of the/ Old Dominion. By/ Edward Beyer', lower cover blocked in blind, the flat spine divided into six compartments by horizontal gilt roll (some discolouration to upper cover, extremities bumped). Modern tan cloth box. One of the foremost American view books created in the nineteenth century. "This is a major outstanding item, the rarity of which is by no means fully appreciated" - Bennett Edward Beyer was a German artist who visited the United States in the early 1850's. He chose to concentrate his work on Virginia and Kentucky, spending three years in Virginia working on the original drawings for this book. Although the titlepage gives Richmond as a place of printing, the book was actually produced in Germany, with the plates being prepared in Dresden and the letterpress in Berlin. The superb tinted lithograph views include beautiful natural scenes, Harper's Ferry, White Sulphur Springs, railroad bridges and tunnels (e.g Highbridge near Farmville), views in Weyer's Cave, and scenes at many of the fashionable resorts which nestled amid the mountains of Southwest Virginia. A broad variety of places in Virginia are shown. Deak writes of Beyer, "He was taken by the beauty of the Virginia landscape, particularly by the elegant settings of some of the region's watering places.Virginians responded warmly to Beyer's enterprise and often gave him advance access to architectural plans when these could be of help to him. There was probably no Virginia county that Beyer left unvisited in his zeal to present what is, in fact, an affectionate family album of an entire state." Deak praises Beyer's "delicate and precise style" and "characteristic refinement of proportion." Bennett p.10; Deak Picturing America 721; Howes B413 ("b"); Sabin 5125. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Stuttgart, 10. IV. 1858. - 2¼ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo.

Zeis, Die Literatur u. Geschichte der Plastischen Chirurgie, gibt unter Nr. 602 (Seite 76/77) eine kurze Inhaltsangabe. cf. Gnudi-Webster, G.Tagliacozzi, S.326 + B.O. Rogers, J.v.         Jerusalem, from the Mount of Olives.

Cairo c. 1858 - Albumen print. Very good tonal range and in fine condition. Pasted on original card, photographer's credit and title printed on card; mounted. Photograph's dimensions: 37 x 48 cm, overall dimension: 65 x 76 cm. A spectacular early photograph of the old city of Jerusalem and its surrounding hills by a renowned master of the medium. From his perspective on the Mount of Olives, Frith captured the walls of the ancient city with houses and buildings distinguishable within. The left side of the photograph shows The Dome of the Rock, one of the holiest sites in Islam. Francis Frith (1822 – 1898) was a renowned photographer, who documented the Middle East as well as the many towns of his native England. He left his cutlery business in 1850 to establish a photographic studio in Liverpool, known as Frith & Hayward. In 1853 he became one of the founders of the Liverpool Photographic Society. Two years later Frith sold his companies and fully dedicated himself to photography. He journeyed to the Middle East on three occasions, the first of which was a trip to Egypt in 1856. Having returned to Surrey from his travels in 1859 he opened the firm of Francis Frith & Co, which became one of the most successful photographic studios of its time.

Album of Virginia; or, illustration of the old dominion

Edward Beyer [but printed by Rau & Son of Dresden and W.Loeillot of Berlin]: [Richmond], Virginia, 1858. Oblong folio. (16 5/8 x 24 ¾ inches). Modern tan cloth box.One of the foremost American view books created in the nineteenth century. "This is a major outstanding item, the rarity of which is by no means fully appreciated" - BennettEdward Beyer was a German artist who visited the United States in the early 1850's. A broad variety of places in Virginia are shown.Deak writes of Beyer, "He was taken by the beauty of the Virginia landscape, particularly by the elegant settings of some of the region's watering places...Virginians responded warmly to Beyer's enterprise and often gave him advance access to architectural plans when these could be of help to him. There was probably no Virginia county that Beyer left unvisited in his zeal to present what is, in fact, an affectionate family album of an entire state." Deak praises Beyer's "delicate and precise style" and "characteristic refinement of proportion."Bennett p.10; Deak Picturing America 721; Howes B413 ("b"); Sabin 5125.

& Atlas.

Paris, J.-B. Baillière et Fils, 1858, 8, VII, 531 pp 1859, Folio, (4), 28 pp., 20 lith. Tafeln, in zwei Halbledereinbänden minimal fleckiges Exemplar. First Edition of this "series of his lectures given at l'Hopital des Enfants Malades in the years 1855, 1856, and 1857 were published in 1858 with the title Lecons cliniques sur les maladies chroniques de I'appareil locomoteur. This was the first time that the subject of orthopedics had been equated with diseases of the locomotor system. Accompanying this volume of lectures was an atlas, which was unique and demonstrated the amount of material that he had available, as well as the care with which he took to study it. Bouvier was well aware of the difficulties that the displacement of the heart, lungs, and abdominal viscera produced in his patients." L.F. Peltier, Ortjopedics,. A History and Iconography, p.207Sauveur-Henri-Victor Bouvier (1799-1877) "was a hardworking and sincere physician who inherited an orthopaedic institute in Paris from one Milli, who had been a patient of Heine at Würzburg. His 1837 survey of bony deformities earned him a prize from the Academie des Sciences, and he wrote an encompassing account of the corset in history and a series of lectures on orthopaedic subjects which used the term 'locomotor apparatus' for the first time. He practised at the Hôpital des Enfants Malades in Paris and was noted for refusing to speak for two weeks before he was due to address a medical meeting, to spare his voice. He died tragically, after a winter's day in 1877, when, now almost blind, he fell into the icy water of the great basin in the Tuileries gardens. Bouvier was an enthusiast of the orthopaedic bed that provided traction, often called extension, as introduced by Venel. For scoliosis, he gave his young female patients crutches so long that their feel hardly touched the ground and they had to swing themselves along, as Dieffenbach remarked, like kangaroos. This was in order to unstress the spine and Delpech noted wrily that if one of these young women happened to break a crutch after months of such locomotion, they were quite unable to make their way indoors, so used were they to not standing on their own feet. Bouvier distinguished between rachitic and postural curves, considering the latter an exaggeration of physiologic deviations. Club-foot accompanying spina bifida was, he thought, due to 'perversion' of muscular activity by a disturbance of nervous activity. It was Bouvier who, 20 years later, in 1836, followed up Delpech's first historic subcutaneous tenotomy of 1816 and reported it a complete and lasting success, describing the organization of a 'tendinous callus' within the tendon sheath. He himself practised the operation and proposed subcutaneous section of the plantar structures for the accompanying cavus. Bouvier would not at first believe that Pravaz had succeeded in reducing a congenital dislocation of the hip by long-continued traction and abduction and never retracted his opposition, despite his own exertions in the field, for he was convinced that the constriction of the joint capsule, rather than shallowness of the socket or muscle contracture, made reposition anatomically impossible. However, he did suggest, in 1835, that late deformity might be corrected by subcutaneous subtrochanteric osteotomy and obtained good results which were copied elsewhere and adapted to older patients: Orthopaedics was first accepted as an independent speciality in France around 1850, and it may be said that Bouvier was the first 'official' orthopaedist. De summo bono."450 years ago this month, in September 1562, the celebrated Basel press of Sebastian Henric Petri, published a two-volume edition of miscellaneous works by Girolamo Cardano (1501-1576?), the famous Milanese polymath whose books were always in great demand. The first volume consisted of the Somniorum Synesiorum Omnis Generis Insomnia Explicantes, a work dealing with dreams, their classification, origin and interpretation. The second volume contained eleven shorter philosophical and medical treaties, among which was the Encomium Neronis, a new biographical treatment of Nero, the much-maligned Roman emperor. It is a work that still has much to teach us, four and a half centuries later. Today, the name of Girolamo Cardano pop ups here and there in books dealing with certain scientific matters. But he probably left his greatest mark on the study of algebra with the publication in Nuremberg in 1545 of his Ars Magna, which contained the solution to cubic equations. His frankness-which reaches its apex in his discussion of the sexual habits attributed to Nero- can be shocking to a modern reader. " Angleo Paratico, A Cold Case of Historical BiasEnthält u.a. die frühe Abhandlung über Schlaf, Schlaflosigkeit, Traum, Traumdeutung, natürliche und übersinnliche Träume etc. Taf.).

      - Arch. Anat. Phys., 1858. Berlin, G. Reimer, 1858, 8°, IV, 649 pp., mit 24 Kupfertafeln, Leinenband d.Zt; fleckig. First Edition! "First description of the Neanderthal skull by Hermann Schaafhausen (1816-1893), the first human fossil skull morphologically distinct from the skulls of modern Homo sapiens, discovered in 1856 in Neanderthal Cave in the Neander Valley, near Düsseldorf." Although after later research the concept had to be somewhat modified, "cellular pathology" is a term which belongs to Virchow alone."Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1892 Garrison & Morton No. 2299 Osler 1624 Waller 9996 Printing and the Mind of Man 307c Grolier/Horblit 99.
