Report of the Committee appointed by the Philomathean Society of the University of Pennsylvania to Translate the inscription on the Rosetta Stone

Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania / Philomathean Society, 1858. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. n.p. 23 cm. Includes the hieroglyphic, demotic, and Greek inscriptions, with translations of each text. New spine in cotton, new head bands, some scuffing and minor staining on boards. Original spine tucked inside. Wear to edges of boards. Some staining to bottom corners. An amazing example of early American printing technology, "The Report" was one of the first books printed in American using the chromolithographic colour printing process. Printed by Philadelphia lithographer Louis Rosenthal, based on sumptuous designs by Henry Morton, the book is one of very few ever printed in America entirely by lithography, ie. all text as well as illustration is lithographed rather than letter-pressed. The stones were destroyed after the first edition of 400 was printed, and entirely new ones were made for the second edition in order to correct pagination errors. Also of interest, Morton states at the end of the book that the pages were "folded into their present form, not by human hands, as one would suppose they must be, but by the iron fingers of a machine, and that too with a rapidity and accuracy which defies the most expert human manipulation." Less than 30 of these machines, recently invented by Cyrus Chambers, were in use across the country at the time. Chromolithography, invented in 1796 but not seen in America until 1840, was the first printing process able to mass-produce coloured art. Using a chemical process of grease on limestone, the image was transferred to paper one colour at a time, sometimes passing through the press up to 25 times to compose one print. Registration of the image was key, and in good quality images the colours line up perfectly, while in lesser quality, mass produced items such as the greeting cards and advertisements which were so popular, the uneven registration is visible around the edges. The process, used in fine art prints, book illustration, advertisements, cards and announcements, brought colourful images into people's homes at affordable prices. It was used prolifically until the 1930s when it was replaced by the cheaper offset printing. The Rosetta Stone is considered one of the most important discoveries of the nineteenth century. Unearthed in 1799 by explorers excavating in the Nile Delta, it is a fragment of basalt containing inscriptions in Hieroglyphic, Demotic and Greek text. In 1822, French Egyptologist Jean Francois Champollion was able to decipher the Hieroglyphic and Demotic versions by comparison with the Greek, thereby unlocking the secrets of ancient Egypt to the modern world. A plaster cast of the Stone given to the Philomathean Society at the University of Pennsylvania inspired the study and subsequent publication of the findings of Chas. R. Hale, S. Huntington Jones, and Henry Morton, resulting in this extraordinary book.

Complete Set of George Eliot First Editions

Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood/ Smith, Elder and Co., 1858-85. First editions of each George Eliot work. Octavo, 30 volumes. 19th century full brown calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines. All edges gilt. A very nice complete set of first editions. From Adam Bede to The Mill on the Floss and Silas Marner, Eliot presented the cases of social outsiders and small-town persecution. Felix Holt, the Radical and The Legend of Jubal were overtly political, and political crisis is at the heart of Middlemarch, in which she presents the stories of a number of denizens of a small English town on the eve of the Reform Bill of 1832; the novel is notable for its deep psychological insight and sophisticated character portraits. The roots of her realist philosophy can be found in her review of John Ruskin's Modern Painters in Westminster Review in 1856. Readers in the Victorian era particularly praised her books for their depictions of rural society, for which she drew on her own early experiences, and she shared with Wordsworth the belief that there was much interest and importance in the mundane details of ordinary country lives. Eliot did not, however, confine herself to her bucolic roots. Romola, an historical novel set in late 15th century Florence and touching on the lives of several real persons such as the priest Girolamo Savonarola, displays her wider reading and interests. Middlemarch, has been described as the greatest novel in the English language by Martin Amis and by Julian Barnes.

        Exceedingly Rare Autographed Letter Signed

Akron, Ohio 1858 - Third son of radical abolitionist John Brown and the only family member to escape from Harpers Ferry. A participant in the revenge raid at Pottawatomie in which the Brown Clan killed five pro-slavery adherents from Missouri and later fended off a raid by pro-slavery advocates at "Osawatomie," in which his unarmed younger brother was murdered in the street. Owen was one of seven participants who escaped from Harpers Ferry out of 41 by evading Robert E. Lee -- traveling through swamps, pursued by soldiers and citizens with dogs and guns. Two of the seven ventured to get food and were captured and hung. Outstanding and exceedingly rare autographed letter signed, 4to, 2 1/4 pages, Akron, Ohio, June 28, 1858, giving his brother and sister information on his whereabouts and quoting a letter he has received from their father John Brown who is on the run and is secretly heading back to Kansas for what will be his very last visit with his family before departing to Harpers Ferry. In small part: ".Father in company with two other men left Cleveland for Kansas on the 21st. I remember your kindness, your self-sacrificing in the best interest in our success and safety.and that part of your hard earnings you have divided with father.I won't forget you! I want to go to your place - but father thought I had better come here for the present. I have found that my health.are [sic] in a great measure at my control in temporance [sic]. Received a letter from father yesterday in Lawrence, Kansas 1: 'Dear son's and wife - I reached Kansas on the 26th - last night and leave here today for the scene of our last troubles.of which it would seem are not over yet. Write me secretly sealed blank envelope.of all that will interest me, directing outside envelope to Rev. Adair Osawatamie, Kansas.your affectionate father.AND may the God of our fathers by your father. We are not at all discouraged with the changes of our affairs and all is not lost that is delayed. Work together for the good of those who love the lord.'" In closing, Owen writes: ".John I am very anxious to hear from you - be kind as to write to me, not expecting any answer.your brother Owen." Much more great content. This letter is complete with no loss of words or content. Pages 3 and 4 are attached to 1 and 2, however instead of being 4to, it was cut down to small 8vo. A remarkable letter written at the very height of the tensions that would arguably lead to the Civil War. Excellent condition.

Die Cellularpathologie in ihrer Begrndung auf physiologische und pathologische Gewebelehre...

xvi, 440 p., 144 illus.; 23 cm. Title continues: "Zwanzig Vorlesungen gehalten whrend der Monate Februar, Mrz und April 1858 in Pathologischen Institute zu Berlin, von Rudolf Virchow." GM 2299; PMM 307c. First edition of Virchow's acclaimed treatise on cellular pathology. His discovery that every morbid structure consisted of cells derived from pre-existing cells revolutionized the concept that any developed tissue can be traced back only to a cell. Using improved microscopic and biochemical techniques, Virchow succeeded in reducing pathological processes to alterations and disturbances occurring at the cellular level. "He advanced the notion that the body is a co-operative state in which every cell is a citizen and in which disease is a civil war brought on by action of external forces" (Dibner, Heralds of Science 132). Printing and the Mind of Man 307c. Bound in contemporary half-cloth and marbled boards; minor wear to edges & corners; an excellent copy. Stock#OB576.

        [Manuscripts]: 11 One Act Plays

A collection of 11 unpublished playscripts by Henry Dingley Coolidge (1858-1922). The scripts are all individually bradbound in wrappers and laid into a tan cloth chemise. All are near fine with some wear at the extremities and a bit of toning, in a near fine lightly rubbed chemise. Coolidge, a direct descendant of Mayflower pilgrim William White, served as clerk for the Massachusetts Senate for 33 years. His interest in literary pursuits was well known, and noted in a senate resolution upon his sudden death in 1922, but during his lifetime he published just two books: Manual for the Use of the General Court and Dead Reckoning: A Farce. The one-act playscripts offered here are unpublished and were preserved by Coolidge's son, whose name and address are written on a paper label on the front pastedown of the chemise along with a list of titles. Though most of the plays are straightforward dramas and comedies, several venture into the supernatural, such as: Mary, Be You a Witch?, based on the Salem witch trails; Haunted?, a story on spiritual possession that ends tragically; and The House of Fearsome Peril, about a homicidal hypnotist. An interesting collection of unpublished plays from the turn of the century. Further details available upon request. .

        A.L.S., 4to, n.p., n.d

To Ann Traubel, close friend and wife of intellectual companion Horace Traubel (1858-1919). Horace turned out a biography on Walt Whitman, one of the transcendalist writers with whom Hartley was so enraptured. "Dear Anne Traubel, I am sending you with these the extra plate out of the El Greco book which we got . I have . lately arrived at the office . I reach here feeling so well and happy - you are health and joy to the tired body and peace to the soul - one grows and blooms in the presence of you - one feels like something big & beautiful when you are around - it is too soon to see the real meaning of this visit to Phila. But I know it is big ." Horace and Anne Traubel's daughter, Gertrude, was a contralto singer in Philadelphia who edited her father's work posthumously. " - and I know it would be because I have waited so long, so fine a 'hearsay' for so long . I shall be writing you from the wilds . and it will be good to hear you speak soft . God bless you. God bless Gertrude." Signed, Marsden Hartley."

Autographed Letter Signed to William Winter, with an Additional Poem and Note by Winter [with; Christus, Three Volumes]

James R. Osgood. Hardcover. Boston, 1858 [1872 for Books]. A four page autograph bifolum manuscript letter from Longfellow to critic William Winter. Longfellow thanks Winter for a poem, and says that upon a future visit "we will read the poems in the music of the mind, and illustrate them with lamp-light and fire light." The poem in reference - from The Queen's Domain, 1859 - is reproduced in manuscript twice, presumably by Winter's hand in one instance. Also included i an envelope in Longfellow's hand addressed to Winter. These items are tipped into the first pages of Christus. All three volumes are present in very good minus condition with some fading to spine and some weakening to hinges. One of 512 of the first edition, consistent with BAL 12160, with erratum "set sail" for "sail set" on p. 171 of the second volume. Winter was a recent graduate of Harvard Law at the time the letter was written, and was clearly enamored with Longfellow's work. A very nice association. . Very Good. 1858.

A new dictionary of the English language

London: Bell & Daldy. 1858. "New Edition, containing a supplement of new words at the back of each volume ; 2 volumes, 4to, pp. [38], 1183, [1], 59; [4], 1185-2221, [1], 61- 125; freshly bound in recent quarter brown calf over marbled boards, black morocco labels on spines. The most substantial lexicographical undertaking in England between that of Samuel Johnson and the O.E.D. ""First published as part of the Encyclopaedia Metropolitana (1818-37), it consisted of a great many illustrative quotations drawn from literature, but with relatively few and brief definitions … Richardson's approach was based on the notion that quotations alone, if sufficient in number, could serve to elucidate 'true etymological meaning.' He went far beyond Johnson in collecting quotations, beginning at the fourteenth century [Johnson went back only to the end of the 16th century] … Richardson sought by his vast collection of quotations to justify the preposterous theory of John Horne Tooke that each word had a single immutable meaning. In his own work, each word and its derivatives were given one etymology and one meaning. His etymologies were as preposterous as his theories, but his dictionary was of great interest to lexicographers because it foreshadowed the historical collections of quotations that were later to form the basis of the Oxford English Dictionary"" (Landau, Dictionaries, p. 66). Based on the ""historical principle"" of lexicography, this work formed an important link between Johnson and the O.E.D. Kennedy 6449; Vancil, p. 205."

In small part: "...Father in company with two other men left Cleveland for Kansas on the 21st. I remember your kindness, your self-sacrificing in the best interest in our success and safety...and that part of your hard earnings you have divided with father...I won't forget you! I want to go to your place - but father thought I had better come here for the present. I have found that my health...are [sic] in a great measure at my control in temporance [sic]. Received a letter from father yesterday in Lawrence, Kansas 1: 'Dear son's and wife - I reached Kansas on the 26th - last night and leave here today for the scene of our last troubles...of which it would seem are not over yet. Write me secretly sealed blank envelope...of all that will interest me, directing outside envelope to Rev. Adair Osawatamie, Kansas...your affectionate father...AND may the God of our fathers by your father. We are not at all discouraged with the changes of our affairs and all is not lost that is delayed. Work together for the good of those who love the lord.'" In closing, Owen writes: "...John I am very anxious to hear from you - be kind as to write to me, not expecting any answer...your brother Owen." Much more great content. This letter is complete with no loss of words or content. Pages 3 and 4 are attached to 1 and 2, however instead of being 4to, it was cut down to small 8vo. A remarkable letter written at the very height of the tensions that would arguably lead to the Civil War. Excellent condition. Third son of radical abolitionist John Brown and the only family member to escape from Harpers Ferry.
