The News Letter of Australasia; or Narrative of Events: A Letter to Send to Friends. April 1858.

John P. Brown,, Melbourne: 1858 - A single cover sheet together with a four page news letter, the cover decorated with large engraving titled "Gold Diggers' Puddling Machine", showing gold diggers working with two of the horse drawn machines. Text below explains the process of gold washing, or puddling: "Our sketch illustrates the Gold-washing process, commonly known as Puddling. The machine, if such a simple arrangement can be so called, consists of a large circular, or rather annular trough, in which are two or more heavily loaded harrows. These are dragged round by a beam to which a horse is harnessed. The washing stuff is thrown into the trough, and then worked up with water into a state of coarse pulp. It is then removed to the long tom or other apparatus to be washed, by being thoroughly agitated with water until the clay has been washed away, and the gold left with the other heavy substances at the bottom. The deposit is then removed for final washing." Number XXII April 1858. On cream color tissue paper, 8 1/4 x 10 1/2". [With] Four page news letter, with the following note under the section pertaining to Western Australia: "From this dull colony we have no news except the arrival of a bishop and a schoolmaster, and the discovery (?) of gold". This refers the founder of the Hale School, the first bishop of Western Australia, Mathew Blagden Hale (1811 - 1895), who founded his Collegiate School in June 1858. Hale was founded on the model of the Collegiate School of St. Peter in Adelaide; it was known as the 'Bishop's School' and struggled, according to Hale because "[T]here is no such thing as convincing people that education pays. Making their sons messengers on a sheep station pays, and that settles the question". (A. De Q. Robin, Australian Dictionary of Biography). Today, Hale School is the oldest private boys' school in Western Australia, while sheep stations have to deal with the competition with synthetic fabrics. Slightly toned at bottom edge of the four page newsletter; not affecting text.

Two autograph letters signed 'Tho. Hamilton'

New York 1858 - Two leaves, variously sized, on "Office of the American Abolition Society" and "Office of Anglo-African (in holograph)" letterhead; April 24, 1858, June 23, 1860; approximately 300 words; folded, unpublished --- Foreseeing that "our cause demands our own advocacy," black publisher and community leader Thomas Hamilton (1823-1865) founded the "Anglo-African Magazine" in January 1859. Monthly contributors included Martin Robison Delany, Frederick Douglass, William Cooper Nell, and James McCune Smit. When first introducing the short-lived periodical, Hamilton vowed: "Man must be free! If not through Law, why then above Law." Nine months before the first issue of "The Anglo-African Magazine" appeared, Thomas Hamilton commenced negotiations to purchase a schoolhouse for black children in Jamaica, Long Island. In April 1858, he requested that a colleague contact the chairman of the board of education and several trustees to "get a fair offer." A local carpenter was contracted to estimate renovations. Arrangements moved forward slowly. Not until June 1860 (three months after the magazine was discontinued) could Hamilton report any progress, telling his colleague that "I am beginning to see daylight (although, perhaps you can't see it) and I think in the course of a week or two, you and I will be able to bask in the sunshine. To this I think I hear you say, Amen!" Two years before Hamilton's death, lack of funds had forced educators to abandon the proposed Jamaica school.

        Am Strande bei Amalfi

Biographical and Critical Essays. Reprinted from Reviews, with Additions and Corrections. In two volumes

London - Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, and Roberts, 1858. London - Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, and Roberts, 1858 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A smart first editionset of this collection of Hayward's essays. First Edition. Complete in two volumes. Abraham Hayward (November 22 1801 February 2 1884) was an English man of letters. After education at Blundell's School, Tiverton, he entered the Inner Temple in 1824, and was called to the bar in June 1832. He took part as a conservative in the discussions of the London Debating Society, where his opponents were J. A. Roebuck and John Stuart Mill. The editorship of the Law Magazine, or Quarterly Review of Jurisprudence, which he held from 1828 to 1844, brought him into connection with John Austin, G Cornewall Lewis, and such foreign jurists as Savigny, whose tractate on contemporary legislation and jurisprudence he rendered into English. In 1833 he travelled abroad, and on his return began contributing to the New Monthly, the Foreign Quarterly, the Quarterly Review and the Edinburgh Review. Political ladies first, and statesmen afterwards, came to recognise the advantage of obtaining Hayward's good opinion. The old reviewing hand became an acknowledged link between society, letters and politics. Collective editions of his articles appeared in volume form in 1858, 1873 and 1874, and Selected Essays in two volumes, 1878. Condition: In full calf bindings.         The History of England

London - Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans and Roberts, 1858. London - Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans and Roberts, 1858 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A copy of Macaulay's famous History of England, covering the last years of the reign of the Stuarts. Thomas Babington Macaulay was a British poet, historian and Whig politician. He wrote extensively as an essayist and reviewer, and on British history. Macaulay's approach to writing the History was innovative for his period. He consciously fused the picturesque, dramatic style of classical historians such as Thucydides and Tacitus with the learned and factual approach of his 18th century precursors such as Hume, following the plan laid out in his own earlier Essay on History (1828). The History is famous for its brilliant ringing prose and for its confident, sometimes dogmatic, emphasis on a progressive model of British history. According to this view, England threw off superstition, autocracy and confusion to create a balanced constitution and a forward-looking culture combined with freedom of belief and expression. This model of human progress has been called the Whig interpretation of history. Seven volumes of eight only. Bookplate of Thomas Tampling Lewis Condition: In full calf bindings. Externally smart, though with some light rubbing. Three joints starting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, though with some scattered instances of spotting. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Percy's masterpiece, Reliques of Ancient English Poetry: Consisting of Old Heroic Ballads, Songs and Other Pieces of our Earlier Poets, Together with Some of a Later Date. With a memoir and critical dissertation by the Rev. George Gilfillan,Life of Percy to front followed by An essay on the Ancient Minstrels with notes. In three volumes complete. Reprinted entire from the author's last edition. Thomas Percy(1729 - 1811) was Bishop of Dromore. Before being made bishop, he was chaplain to George III. Percy's greatest contribution is considered to be his Reliques of Ancient English Poetry (1765), the first of the great ballad collections, which was the one work most responsible for the ballad revival in English poetry that was a significant part of the Romanticmovement. The Reliques of Ancient English Poetry set the stage not only for Robert Burns, but also for Wordsworth and Coleridge's Lyrical Ballads. The book is based on an old manuscript collection of poetry, which Percy claimed to have rescued in Humphrey Pitt's house at Shifnal, Shropshire, from the hands of the housemaid who was about to light the fire with it. The manuscript was edited in its complete form by J. W. Hales and F. J. Furnivall in 1867 - 1868. This manuscript provides the core of the work but many other ballads were found and included, some by Percy's friends Johnson, William Shenstone, Thomas Warton, and some from a similar collection made by Samuel Pepys. Condition: In original cloth bindings. Externally, in soundbutwith only slight bumping and wear to extremities, some fading, mostly to volume one andslight marks and stainsto boards. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean throughout but with occasional handling marks and slight scattered spotting and slight foxing. Previous owner's initial ink stamp to front free endpapers and the odd unopened page. Overall: VERY GOOD.

Essays Biographical, Historical, and Miscellaneous, contributed chiefly to the Edinburgh and Quarterly Reviews.

London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, and Roberts, 1858 - 2 volumes, octavo. Original brown linen-grained cloth, title gilt to the spines, blind panelling on the boards, pinkish cream surface-paper endpapers. A little rubbed, corners bumped, cloth on volume I with faint splash marks and slightly bubbling, front free endpaper of volume I neatly clipped, light marginal browning, but overall very good. First Edition. Against his father's wishes Gleig obtained an Ensigncy in the 85th Regiment, serving with them in Wellington's Army in the Peninsula and seeing action at the crossing of the Bidassoa, at the siege of Bayonne, at Orthez, and at Toulouse. "The 85th was then dispatched to North America where Gleig was present at the attacks on Washington, Baltimore, and New Orleans. He was wounded on several occasions, though accounts differ as to the number of times." (ODNB) At the end of the Wars Gleig was pressured by his father to resign on half-pay & turn his efforts towards ordination. He graduated BA in 1818 and MA in 1821, and obtained a series of livings from which he barely scraped a living. In 1825 he submitted to William Blackwood a fictionalised account of his war experiences, The Subaltern, "It was a great success [when serialized] and well written. Blackwood rushed a book version into press, and a revised edition was offered in London by John Murray in 1826." This was the foundation of his writing career which saw him publish some 58 books in his lifetime. It also secured for him an introduction to the Duke of Wellington, who thereafter acted as his "half-hearted patron." He was appointed Chaplain of Chelsea Hospital in 1834, Chaplain-General of the Forces in 1844, and Inspector-General of Military Schools in 1846. The present compilation brings together papers on Military Bridges, the War in the Punjaub, India and its Army, and Military Education amongst other subjects. [Attributes: First Edition]
