Norman 839. - Garrison & Morton 3620. - Hirsch II, 437. - Erste Ausgabe. "Frerich's classic monograph on diseases of the liver summarized the existing knowledge and included his own important work on the subject. He discovered leucine and tyrosine in the liver in acute yellow atrophy, a condition to which he devoted much study. Frerichs was Professor of Pathology at Berlin and enjoyed a great reputation; more than any other man he was responsible for the development of scientific teaching in Germany" (G & M). - Die Textbände mit Bibliotheksstempeln und Rückenschildern.         ALBUM OF VIRGINIA; OR, ILLUSTRATION OF THE OLD DOMINION

Richmond [but actually Dresden & Berlin]: Loeillot of Berlin], 1858. Oblong folio. Original gilt cloth boards bound onto larger modern three-quarter morocco and cloth. Titlepage lightly soiled and edgeworn. A few plates with closed marginal tears, expertly repaired; titlepage and each plate backed by tissue. [with:] [Beyer, Edward]: DESCRIPTION OF THE ALBUM OF VIRGINIA: OR THE OLD DOMINION, ILLUSTRATED. VOL. I [all published]. Richmond: Enquirer Book and Job Printing Office, 1857. [79]pp. Original half calf and cloth boards, gilt title on front board. Text volume very clean internally. Overall a very good, handsome copy of a book very difficult to find in clean condition, here with the scarce accompanying text volume. Both volumes housed in folding cloth box. The Beyer album is one of the foremost American view books created in the 19th century. "This is a major outstanding item, the rarity of which is by no means fully appreciated" - Bennett. Edward Beyer was a German artist who visited the United States in the early 1850s. He chose to concentrate his work on Virginia and Kentucky, spending three years in Virginia working on the original drawings for this book. Although the titlepage asserts Richmond was the place of printing, the book was actually produced in Germany, with the plates being prepared in Dresden and the letterpress in Berlin. The superb tinted lithograph views include beautiful natural scenes, Harpers Ferry, White Sulphur Springs, railroad bridges and tunnels (e.g. Highbridge near Farmville), views in Weyer's Cave, and scenes at many of the fashionable resorts which were nestled amid the mountains of Southwest Virginia. "He was taken by the beauty of the Virginia landscape, particularly by the elegant settings of some of the region's watering places...Virginians responded warmly to Beyer's enterprise and often gave him advance access to architectural plans when these could be of help to him. There was probably no Virginia county that Beyer left unvisited in his zeal to present what is, in fact, an affectionate family album of an entire state" - Deák. Deák praises Beyer's "delicate and precise style" and "characteristic refinement of proportion." It is one of the foremost works of American scenery. This copy of Beyer is notable for being accompanied by the small volume of explanatory text, separately published in Richmond in 1857. This volume is quite rare and almost never found with the album.

REID'S TRAMP; OR, A JOURNAL OF THE INCIDENTS OF TEN MONTHS TRAVEL THROUGH TEXAS, NEW MEXICO, ARIZONA, SONORA, AND CALIFORNIA. INCLUDING TOPOGRAPHY, CLIMATE, SOIL, MINERALS, METALS, AND INHABITANTS; WITH A NOTICE OF THE GREAT INTER-OCEANIC RAIL ROAD

Selma, Al., 1858. Original blindstamped cloth, spine gilt. Spine bit faded and shaken, rear inner hinge cracked and separated. Front free endpaper and fly leaf excised; bookplate on front pastedown. Occasional fox mark. Good. In a half morocco and cloth box. One of the great classic rarities of Southwest Americana, this is Reid's account of the journey to explore the Gadsden Purchase and his overland journey to California by the southern route. He left Marion, Alabama in September 1856 with a party of travellers known as the Mesilla Valley Company, whose main purpose was to explore the newly acquired territory in the Southwest known as the Gadsden Purchase. The group travelled through Mobile and New Orleans, then by ship to Galveston, then on land to San Antonio, Castroville, El Paso, Tucson, San Diego, and San Francisco. In the beginning of 1857, Reid joined a failed filibustering expedition into Sonora and Chihuahua led by Henry Crabb, but left for California by April of that year. He stayed only a short time in California before returning via Panama, Havana, and New Orleans. The book contains a wealth of brief and entertaining descriptions of life in the Mexican cession, including the towns and hamlets visited along the way, German immigrants, the agricultural promise of the region, desert flora and fauna, and speculation on the future of the Indians of the Southwest. The description of Reid's association with Crabb's filibusters is most interesting. "Reid's work is one of the genuine classics relating to the Southwest; his descriptions of mines and miners, the natives, in fact all the country through which he passed, are vivid" - Decker. A most important Southwest rarity, accorded a "d" rating by Howes.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("J. Strauss").

Paris, 130 rue Montmartre, 1. XI. 1858. - 2 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. 8vo. - Gering braunfleckig.

Wagon Road from Fort Defiance to the Colorado River Letter from the Secretary of War Transmitting the Report of the Superintendent of the Wagon Road from Fort Defiance to the Colorado River

[Washington], 1858. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 35th Congress, 1st Session. House of Representatives Ex. Doc. No. 124. 87 pp, with large folding map in rear pocket covering. Modern blue buckram with gilt title on spine. Old archival tape repair to final two leaves at gutter; map has one old tape repair and several small splits at the intersections. In 1857, Beale-an accomplished frontiersman who had traversed the country from coast to coast six times bearing dispatches in the late 1840s-accepted a commission to survey a wagon road and establish a trade route along the 35th parallel from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Los Angeles. The expedition is noted in part for Beale's successful use of camels as pack animals. The wagon road began at Fort Smith and continued through the New Mexico Territory and Arizona Territory to Fort Defiance, before crossing the Colorado River near present-day Needles, California. The Mojave Road continued west from where Beale's Wagon Road met the Colorado River, through the Mojave Desert to Southern California. The part of the expedition described here (from Fort Defiance in northeast Arizona to the California border, primarily presented in the form of Beale's diary) was conducted in the second half of 1857. Beale's letter of transmittal is enthusiastic with regard to climate, noting that there was no sickness at all in camp ("the medicine chest proved only an incumbrance") and that "even in midwinter, and on the most elevated portions of the road, not a tent was spread, the abundant fuel rendering them unnecessary for warmth and comfort." However, since "this will inevitably become the great emigrant road to California," he recommends the construction of several dams and bridges to make travel easier, as well as the establishment of a military post on the Colorado. This he says is "an indispensable necessity for the emigrant over this road; for although the Indians...are agricultural and consequently peaceable, they are very numerous...The temptation of scattered emigrant parties with their families, and the confusion of inexperienced teamsters, rafting so wide and rapid a river with their wagons and families, would offer too strong a temptation for the Indians to withstand." Graff 216; Farqhaur 20; Howes B-271, Wheat 939.

Schriftsteller und Stimmführer der Jungdeutschen Bewegung (1811-1878): Eigenh. Brief mit U.,

Dresden, 8. VIII. 1858. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Jerusalem, from the Mount of Olives.

Cairo c. 1858 - Albumen print. Very good tonal range and in fine condition. Pasted on original card, photographer's credit and title printed on card. Mounted. Photograph's dimensions: 37 x 48 cm, overall dimension: 65 x 76 cm. A spectacular early photograph of the old city of Jerusalem and its surrounding hills by a renowned master of the medium. From his perspective on the Mount of Olives, Frith captured the walls of the ancient city with houses and buildings distinguishable within. The left side of the photograph shows The Dome of the Rock, one of the holiest sites in Islam. Francis Frith (1822 – 1898) was a renowned photographer, who documented the Middle East as well as the many towns of his native England. He left his cutlery business in 1850 to establish a photographic studio in Liverpool, known as Frith & Hayward. In 1853 he became one of the founders of the Liverpool Photographic Society. Two years later Frith sold his companies and fully dedicated himself to photography. He journeyed to the Middle East on three occasions, the first of which was a trip to Egypt in 1856. Having returned to Surrey from his travels in 1859 he opened the firm of Francis Frith & Co, which became one of the most successful photographic studios of its time.

This printing of the first laws of the Territory of New Mexico following its organization, includes the first re-printing of the Kearny Code. That code, written by Colonel Doniphan during the U.S. occupation of the region during the Mexican War and printed in Santa Fe in 1846, would be the first American code of laws locally printed in the far west. The Territory of New Mexico would be ceded to the U.S. as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, and the territory officially organized in November 1850. The first session of the first legislative Assembly of the Territory met in Santa Fe on 1 December 1851, with the first act being an act to establish the Office of the Translator. With text in English and Spanish throughout, in addition to a re-printing of the Kearny Code this volume includes a printing of the organic law creating the territory, the acts passed by both the first and second sessions of the first legislature, a printing of the U.S. Constitution (in Spanish only, as issued), a list of the members of the Assembly and an Index to all the laws. As expected, the acts passed by the first legislative assembly include the foundation acts concerning the establishment of courts, elections, territorial militia, revenue, county boundaries, public lands, negotiations with Indian tribes, and much more. According to an act passed at the first session of the Legislative Assembly of the Territory (approved July 18, 1851, see p. 181), five hundred copies of the laws were ordered to be printed. This foundation work on the establishment of the Territory, printed in the Territory, is very rare.         Illustrations of Furniture, Candelabra, Musical Instruments from the Great Exhibitions of London & Paris with Examples of Similar Articles from Royal Palaces and Noble Mansions

London.: J. Braund.. 1858.. 48 black and white engraved plates, 18 x 13 inches, plates loose in later portfolio with ties. Foxing to title page and first and last two plates. The rather crude portfolio (brown paper-covered boards) was evidently fashioned when the original binding of the book disintegrated. In general the plates are very bright and clean. A wonderful compendium of elegant and ornate furntiture including a baby's "Cot", bookcases, desks, tables, chimney pieces, beds, sofas, etc. The Description of Plates identifies the date of each piece, what it is made of, its provenance and the exhibition at which it was displayed. There is also a list of Names of Subscribers. The very fine engravings are by E. Salandri after drawings by J. Braund. .

Smith, Elder, and Co., 1858, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, Scarce Third edition. A Very Good copy of "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte and of "Agnes Grey" by Anne Bronte, issued together in this "New Edition" in one volume [i.e. the Third Edition], with a Preface and Memoir of Both Authors by Charlotte Bronte, bound in the Publisher's original orange cloth (mild edge wear, fading to the spine panel and board extremities, small and unsurprising gap between the spine and the closed page block); a single volume presenting "Wuthering Heights" (originally published in 1847, a year before Emily Bronte's death in 1848) and "Agnes Grey" (also first published in 1847, shortly before Anne Bronte's death in 1849). Emily Bronte's only novel, "Wuthering Heights" is considered to be one of English Literature's great classics, while Irish novelist George Moore described Anne Bronte's debut novel, "Agnes Grey", as "the most perfect prose narrative in English letters". A quite scarce copy of this early edition of these two important works and even scarcer in a condition as nice as is this copy. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Wien, 6. III. 1858. - 2 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. Folio.

Rio de Janeiro, Bernardo Xavier Pinto de Sousa, 1858. - 11 volumes bound in 1.@ 8°, contemporary green quarter morocco (extremities a bit worn), flat spine, gilt letter, with horizontal gilt fillets. Internally very fine. Presentation inscription on recto of front free endpaper: "Ao Exm° Am° Jorge Cesar de Figaniére, tributo de admiração ao talento, á evidição ao merito litterario," signed by the brother of the translator "J.F. de Castilho". Overall a fine copy. Lithographic portrait, 119 pp.; 102 pp., (1 blank l.); 103 pp.; 784 pp. [unnumbered blank leaf after p. 604]. *** FIRST EDITION of the first Portuguese translation of the @Amores. The translation, in volumes I-III, is followed by the lengthy @Grinalda Ovidiana, with extensive notes on the text, a guide to mythological figures and a life of Ovid. On the leaf immediately following the title-page of volume I, the translator alerts "adolescentes de um e outro sexo" that the present work contains "mysterios de iniquidade," and that if they read it despite his warning, they have only themselves to blame. (Could there be a better way to entice teenagers to read the classics?) The only earlier translation into Portuguese of any of Ovid's works appears to be Castilho's translation of the @Metamorphoses, of which only volume I was published, Lisbon, 1841. He also translated the @Fasti and the @Ars amatoria, Lisbon, 1862.Antonio Feliciano de Castilho (1800-1875) ranks as one of the three best Romantic writers in Portugal, along with Almeida Garrett and Herculano. He published numerous works of poetry and prose, founded and edited the @Revista universal Lisbonense (1841-45) and began the series "Livraria Classica Portuguesa," for which he wrote the studies of Bernardes and Garcia de Resende. His translation of Faust roused a heated controversy among students of German language and literature ("a questão faustiana"), and his 1865 condemnation of the young writers of Coimbra?Antero de Quental, Teofilo Braga, Vieira de Castro?for "nebulosidade" incited Quental to write Bom senso e bom gôsto.A native of Lisbon, Castilho went blind at the age of six but nevertheless earned a degree in law from Coimbra. Aside from his literary activities, he invented a new method for teaching children to read, the "methodo portuguez," which he attempted to implement while serving as Comissario Geral de Instrucção Primaria.*** Innocêncio I, 134; VIII, 132: listing only the first 2 volumes. In the two-page report, Douglas, the Harbor Master of South Australia, publicly expresses his 'admiration of the wonderful correctness in all essential points of Capt. Flinders's survey; and would observe, that no means at our disposal at present are sufficiently reliable to correct the various leading features as determined by that intrepid navigator'. Douglas also begs 'respectfully to request that one hundred copies of the chart may be lithographed'; in the absence of any other publication details, we present his request for what it's worth.       I. L. Kober. (On cover: Pest. Lampel Róbert.) [Printed in Prague by Friedrich Rohlí?ek.], Prága és Lipcse [Prague and Leipzig], 1858 - First Hungarian edition. Lampel's vignette on cover. In publisher's wrappers, printed in green. (9), 6-42 p., (14 [pages of advertisement of the publisher, printed by Jaroslav Pospe?il in Prague; and (8) p. advertisement of "Album. Bibliothek deutscher Originalromane".]). First Hungarian edition, early translation of one of the earliest Slavonic language writings "The Tale of Igor's Campaign". Translated by the Hungarian historian and linguist Szende Riedl (1831-1873) after the German edition. Riedl was an expert on the historical connections between the Slavs and the Hungarians, thus he found the story of Igor's campaign against the Polovtsians particularly important to be translated and introduced to the Hungarian public. The identity between the Polovtsians and the Cumans was recently proven by Riedl's colleague János Jerney, who even stated that their language was Hungarian and were the ancestors of the Hungarians. Riedl explains the importance of the text and its context in the ten-page foreword, that followed by the translation and the notes. "The Tale of Igor's Campaign" is one of the oldest Slavonic language text, a medieval epic poem from the late 12th century about the unsuccessful campaign of Prince Igor Svyatoslavich, prince of the Russian lands of Novgorod-Seversky against the Polovtsians (or Cumans). The tale was written anonymously around 1185 and its only manuscript, dated to the 15th century, was discovered in 1795 by Aleksei Musin-Pushkin and burned during Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812. Musin-Pushkin published the text in 1800 with the help of Alexei Malinovsky and Nikolai Bantysh-Kamensky, leading Russian paleographers of the time. It was first published in German in 1803 and in 1858 in Hungarian. Scarce, we could trace only three copies in institutional holdings worldwide. Artistically restored. In very good condition. In publisher's wrappers, printed in green First Hungarian edition. Lampel's vignette on cover. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems

London: Bell and Daldy, 1858. First edition. Original brown fine-hatched cloth with embossed covers and gilt lettering on spine, original light brown endpapers. Headpieces and vignette designs. 248pp. Printed at Chiswick Press. Allan F. Vigers Copy, with his superb Nouveau-style bookplate on front pastedown, design by himself. "The architect Allan Francis Vigers took a highly individualistic approach to pattern design, informed by his skills as an illuminator... He specialized in intricate florals, composed of a mass of small flower heads, mounted like jewels on white or dark-blue backgrounds. At once naturalistic and highly artificial, his patterns featured typical English garden flowers... simply and accurately depicted, but arranged in consciously artful synchronized formations" (Lesley Jackson, Twentieth Century Pattern Design, Princeton, 2002). William Morris' first book and closely allied to the PRB movement. No ads, errata slip present. A superb copy with light sunning to spine, light wear to covers, internally fine, clean and bright with no signs of foxing.
