1857-1877 LICHFIELD Theological College Staffordshire SIGNED ALBUM Photographs of ANGLICAN MINISTERS ORIGINAL COLLEGE BOOK of ORDAINED MINISTERS Together with other Lichfield Personalities

Lichfield 1857 - This is a unique and fascinating Victorian Album of Photographs of Theological Students from Lichfield Theological College the college was founded in 1857 to train Anglican clergy to serve in the Church of England. this album contains photographs of the Theological students who were ordained from 1857 to 1877 in the first twenty years of the life of the college the college was located on the south side of Cathedral Close in Lichfield on Shrewsbury Road, and was eventually closed in 1970 the large leather bound album with brass closure clasp measures 12.5 inches by 10 inches approx., with the embossed arms of the college in gilt to both boards, page edges gilded all-round, internally the album contains One Hundred and Forty Four Cabinet Photographs, the majority of which are identified with name labels, and a good many of those are named with actual autographs of the individual Ministers. There is a note fixed into the front endpaper of the album by its then owner, a F. A. Coley dated 1965-66. Possibly he may have been a staff member of the college or student in the final few years before the college closed in 1970 on the label he has written that the album was mentioned in accounts of the history of Lichfield Theological College, that account mentions that the albums leather binding was then covered in a black canvas material at that time there is very obvious signs of the removal of this black canvas to the endpapers, as the endpapers have some noticeable surface damage, with signs also to the leather at the spine ends, it is also obvious that a few of the photographs have been removed or have got lost over the years with a few noticeable gaps, however it still remains a fascinating primary source document of many of the students who passed through the college in the first twenty years of its existence, along with many autographs of those ministers, one photograph has been defaced with the head scratched out apart from the obvious signs of the removal of the black canvas from the leather binding, and the noted loss of some of the photographs, the album is in good general condition AN IMPORTANT AND INVALUABLE RECORD OF MANY OF THE STUDENTS WHO ATTENDED LICHFIELD THEOLOGICAL COLLEGE IN ITS FIRST TWENTY YEARS AND WERE ORDAINED THERE Please Note, The book is Large and Very Heavy over five kilos packed, shipping will be quite a bit more than the basic standard quote, please enquire for the rates to your country. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Queen's Regulations and Orders for the Army.

London: John W. Parker & Son,, 1857. Adjutant-General's Office, Horse Guards, First of July 1857. Octavo (267 × 175 mm). Contemporary full crimson hard-grained morocco presentation binding, title gilt to the spine, low flat bands with gilt dotted roll, compartments elaborately gilt, concentric panelling in gilt and blind to the boards, fleur-de-lys cornerpieces, large block of the Royal Arms to the centre of both boards, all edges gilt, floral roll to edges and turn-ins, pale cream surface paper endpapers. Tables to the text. A little light shelf-wear, corners bumped, but overall very good indeed, an extremely handsome copy. Rather spectacularly "choice", "extra gilt" large paper copy of the Queen's Regs. "Her Majesty has been pleased to give her approbation to the following Regulations and Orders ? they are applicable to all stations at which the troops may be serving; and General officers employed on the Staff, and commanding officers of regiments, are responsible that they are invariably adhered to ? every officer in Her Majesty's service is to provide himself with a copy of these Regulations and Orders, and to make himself perfectly acquainted with them" (Preface). A highly unusual presentation of this basic handbook, we have never encountered another similar.

Paris: Gide et J. Baudry, 1857. First edition. Contemporary half green morocco over marbled boards, four raised bands, three compartments decorated in gilt, two compartments with red morocco labels titled in gilt. Very good copies with minor wear to boards, spine tips rubbed, small bookseller's label on free front endpaper, foxing, rear blanks clipped at corner; two small tears to map with old tape repairs on verso, otherwise map quite sharp.. [4], 337, [2]; [4], 323, [2] pp. Illus. with 22 engravings, 2 plates of music, and 1 large folding color map (70.5 x 31.6 cm.). "A very attractive and valuable work," (Bandelier: Notes on the Bibliography of Yucatan and Central America). Pierre Marie Arthur Morelet (1809-1892) was a French naturalist and expert on molluscs. In 1846 and 1847 he undertook a self financed expedition to Central America but with input from the Academie de Sciences in Paris where he published its results shortly after his return. It was only a decade later in 1857 that he could be convinced to publish a narrative that would appeal to a wider audience (it was translated in 1871 as 'Travels in Central America', absent the part on Cuba). Morelet "belongs to that group of writers whose approach to nature and its beings is still guided by a humanistically-inspired reverence for creation...." (Surveying the American Tropics: A Literary Geography). Morelet wrote in a entertaining style filled with "anecdotes of picaresque adventures whose literary effect is heightened by the frequent inclusion of dialogues with his uneducated but witty companions- his French servant and native guides [but] his text also offers serious and extremely well-written descriptions of the natural world he encounters, which betray his scholarly expertise." Rarely at auction; only two in the last half century. Palau 181582. Sabin 50591. Bandelier: p.13.

Catalogue of the coleopterous insects of Madeira in the collection of the British Museum

London, The Trustees of the British Museum, 1857. 8vo (22.0 x 13.8cm). xvi, 234, 8 pp.; one lithographed plate. Publisher's blind-stamped cloth with gilt title on the spine.= The first thorough work on the insects of Madeira, Porto Santo and some adjacent islets. The material was mostly collected by the author. As could be expected from rather isolated island-faunas most species described in this work are endemic. Thomas Vernon Wollaston (1822-1878) FLS published a series of eight island faunal studies, the others being on the insects of Madeira (published in 1854), the Coleoptera of Madeira in the British Museum (1857), those of the Cape Verde Islands (1867), on the beetles of the Canaries (1864), on the landshells of the Atlantic islands (1878), and on the variation of species, with especial reference to the Insecta (1858). The last mentioned paper in particular is an important contribution to evolution. However, Wollaston, concluded from his researches that species were created under a divine plan to best suit local circumstances. Published in the year previous to Darwin's "On the origin of species", it was kindly received by Darwin. In turn, Wollaston, who could not shed his religious beliefs, published quite a negative review of Darwin's work. Thereafter sympathy between both men although working on much the same subject deteriorated slowly but steadily. The present work includes new species. The plate shows species of the genera Stereus, Autocera and Orthoperus. Former owner's inscription in the margin of the half-title, cancelled stamp on the title page, otherwise a very good clean, near mint copy. Rare. Cat.         Lettre autographe signée ("Fétis"). Bruxelles, 9. II. 1857.

1857. 2p In-8 (40 lignes).

(Bd. 11 angleichend neu gebunden, St.a.T.). - Einbände ausgebessert, Vorsätze tlw. erneuert, St. a.         Eigenh. Brief mit U. Berlin, 21. VI. 1857.

1857. 2 ½ SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. 8vo.

Cfr. Colas 1910 e Lipperhide.         Travels and Discoveries in North and Central Africa: Being a Journal of an Expedition Undertaken under the Auspices of H.B.M.'s Government, in the Years 1849-1855 [Volumes. I-III only (of 5)]

New York: D. Appleton & Co, 1857. First American Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Vols. I-III Only (of 5). 11 folding maps, 36 tinted litho plates, xi, 635, xi, 676, xxxvi, 578p. plus [2]p. publisher's advertisements at end of Vol. III. Green cloth. Vols. I and III have new endpapers and have been rebacked, with almost all of the original backstrips mounted. 23cm. Ex church library with oval red stamp of upstate New York church on each title-page and a few other library markings including evidence of removal of a small label toward base of backstrips, above which "Ta." has been imprinted in gilt on each backstrip. Contents have a little age-toning around edges but are otherwise quite sound and clean. An important account of African exploration and discovery. While the three volume Harper edition of 1857-1859 is often described as the first American edition, we believe that this much scarcer and far more appealing Appleton edition is the true first American edition. This Appleton edition mimics the London edition of 1857-1858 except that the title-page in these volumes lists Appleton as the publisher and New York as the place of publication. A small diamond-shaped sticker ("Bound by Westleys & Co London") preserved and mounted in a corner of the new rear endpaper suggests that these volumes were bound in England.

Morelet "belongs to that group of writers whose approach to nature and its beings is still guided by a humanistically-inspired reverence for creation…." (Surveying the American Tropics: A Literary Geography).
