The Departure (Second Class) [and] The Return (First Class). Engraved by H.W. Simmons

London: E. Gambart, 1857. Two engravings, 495 x 682 mm, mounted and framed. "The Departure" shows a young boy leaving for the Australian goldfields, accompanied to the ship by his grieving mother and sister. Placards displayed on the wall of the second class carriage include advertisements for ships sailing to Sydney and Port Phillip, whilst a notice from a company situated in the Strand states that "Australian Emigrants should be provided with all Implements for the Gold Diggings".In 'The Return' the boy is now a successful young man in uniform, the luxury of the first class carriage is the perfect setting for the finery he now displays.A rare pair of mezzotint engravings after two genre paintings by Abraham Solomon (1824-1862). The original painting for the first of the two engravings now hangs in the Australian National Gallery. These beautiful engravings typify the Victorian taste for the sentimental and the mid-nineteenth-century vision of Australia as the land of promise.

History of the War in Afghanistan from The Unpublished Letters and Journals of Political and Military Officers Employed in Afghanistan Throughout the Entire Period of British Connexion with that Country

London.: Richard Bentley.. New and revised edition.. 1857.. 3 volumes. Volume I: xvi + 502pp. Volume II: viii + 442pp. Volume III: viii + 469pp. Professionally rebound in brown cloth, titled in gilt on red cloth on spine. Marbled edges, very good clean set. Valuable documentation has allowed the author to present an important and candid account of the first Afghan War. This second, revised edition appears rather more difficult to find than the first edition for reasons we have not been able to ascertain. Was it perhaps because the Indian Mutiny broke out in 1857, the year the first edition was published, and this event detracted interest and sales causing this revised edition when it did appear to be published in a lower print run? In the advertisement for the third edition of 1874, Kaye wrote in reference to the three-volume edition of 1857 which we are offering here, that it ?"was thoroughly revised and much improved by the kindly aid of many of the chief actors in the scenes described. I do not think that I can make it any better?". .

Illustrations of the Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians: In a Series of Letters and Notes Written During Eight Years of Travel and Adventure Among the Wildest and Most Remarkable Tribes Now Existing

Henry G. Bohn, New York 1857 - An idealist and dreamer in the best American sense, Catlin's purpose, as noted in these letters, was to "[snatch] from a hasty oblivion what could be saved for the benefit of posterity, and perpetuating it, as a fair and just monument, to the memory of a truly lofty and noble race." There was a practical, ethnographic element to his project, as well: five years after Catlin painted them, the Mandan tribe was devasted by smallpox (DAB). Original red cloth, gilt spine. Spines laid down. Very good With 313 black and white engravings on 180 leaves including fold-out map. 2 vols. 8vo

        Australian Album 1857

Sydney, J.R. Clarke, Music Publisher ('Allan & Wigley, Lith. Printers'), 1857 - Large quarto, [v] leaves (all with either recto or verso blank), comprising the frontispiece (a portrait of the visiting Austrian violinist Miska Hauser), pictorial title, dedication, preface, and contents, plus eight separately printed pieces of sheet music (for piano) with pictorial covers (one in colour); there is a blank leaf between each piece. With the exception of the preface and contents leaf, all text and illustrations are lithographed. Gilt-pictorial blue watered cloth (featuring the title within a large floral garland; the same design is stamped in blind on the rear cover); all edges gilt; cloth a little marked and worn at the extremities, with minor loss to the head and foot of the spine; endpapers and first and last pages a little foxed; most pages are offset; a very good copy, with the contents in excellent condition. The contemporary gift inscription to 'Margery C Metcalfe / from / Wm H M / Jany 1st 1857' is written in ink on the flyleaf. The artwork is by Edmund Thomas (1827-1867); the ten plates include three portraits and scenic views of Sydney Heads, Rose Bay, and the North Shore, as well as 'Allan Cunningham's Monument in the Botanic Gardens'. The pieces are Boulanger, E.D.: The Last Rose of Summer (12 pages); Hauser, Miska: Australian Flowers (8 pages); Marsh, S.H. (with poetry by Mrs Hemans): Far o'er the Sea (10 pages); Hauser, Miska: The Bird upon the Tree (12 pages); Marsh, Henry: The Pic Nic Polka (8 pages); Ellard, Frederic: Morceau de Salon Lucrezia (12 pages); Stanley, William: The Rose Bay Quadrilles (8 pages); and Alary, G.: Variations (8 pages). The pagination includes the cover artwork in each case. The preface, dated December 1856, is by a very young Frank Fowler (1833-1863), journalist and author: 'In 1855-58 he visited New South Wales for his health and intended to write a popular book on his travels [and he did]. Fowler identified himself with the colony and had grandiose plans for the establishment of a national literature. In 1858 [he] returned to England [where] he died aged 30 from brain fever. Fowler's style reveals a poetic, romantic and ebullient personality' (Australian Dictionary of Biography). A sample from the preface will prove the point: the compositions 'are all new - all colonial. Here - in this city - they were played, printed, and published. True, some of the composers are foreigners; but still this book is as much an Australian production as a cluster of grapes from the German vineyard at Kissing Point. We can send the work home as a specimen of what we can do out here at Botany Bay - as an index of our education, refinement, art-feeling. And it is fitting we should attest our social progress by some annual publication of this character. Nothing else will do it so completely and so well. It vindicates our connexion with old-world genius and skill; and proves that we are not destitute of some of the haughty lineaments of European civilization'. Ferguson 6318 (noting the artist and with a useful list of the plate content, but not mentioning the composers or their compositions). Reading between the lines in Fowler's preface, one gets the distinct impression that this album is a 'first thus' for the colony - and possibly for the country .         D'Albert's Album 1857

London.: Chappell & Co.. 1857.. Gift book, 14 x 10 inches, 136 pp. featuring music by Charles D'Albert and chromolithographic plates by John Brandard. Covers detached; heavy wear to extremities. Leather spine peeling and abraded. Decorative embossed cover with gilt lettering and decorative embellishments (overall light soiling and wear). Volume contains music for eighteen musical compositions by D'Albert with four (of five) chromolithographic plates after Brandard (with possible additional hand coloring) plus title page and gift presentation page also by Brandard; all six of the exquisite plates were printed by M. & N. Hanhart. Contents in good clean condition. The four large color plates in this volume represent illustrations used for cover art when D'Albert's compositions were published and sold individually. Space at the top and bottom of the chromo illustrations, left blank as published in the Album, would have been utilized in the sheet music's solo edition for printing the composition's title at top and, at bottom, publisher details. As preserved in the Album, the four chromolithographic plates (plus title and presentation pages) are in near mint condition. D'Albert's music with Brandard's illustrations are quite scarce in Album format. The four plates illustrate The Queen's Valse (a young Queen Victoria); Estelle (plate not present); St. Petersburg Quadrille (spelled on the Contents page as Petersburgh); The Sybil Valse; the Savoyard Polka. An uncommon publication with condition issues noted. .

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Jos. v. Eichendorff").

Neisse, 15. VI. 1857.. 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo..

With 1 double page plate and 1 folding plate. Morocco - backed marbled boards, with the original printed wrappers bound in. An excellent copy. First and only edition. While primitive underwater breathing methods had been around for centuries, the first real technological push towards underwater exploration was the diving bell - - little more than a hard, bell - shaped chamber that would retain a pocket of air when lowered into a body of water. Individual suits were a vast improvement over this early apparatus, and the work featured here focuses on a very specific type of diving suit patented by Joseph - Martin Cabirol, not too dissimilar to Augustus Siebe?s groundbreaking design in which a metal helmet was secured to the collar of a full - length suit, allowing the user more flexibility and freedom of movement. Though far from safe by today?s standards, the Cabriol diving suit did represent a leap forward with certain safety features. It even won the silver medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. The author here offers advice for the use of the Cabriol diving suit on board ships. He presents a basic outline of the mechanisms involved, the nomenclature, and various safety procedures. One of the most delightful parts of this booklet is the double page plate of a diver in full gear, axe in hand, posing contrapposto for the viewer. It conjures up images straight out of a Jules Verne novel - minus, of course, the giant sea monster. Du Temple was a first lieutenant in the French navy and evidently quite an authority on steam power (according to his credentials on the title page). In addition to his naval interests, Louis and his brother Felix also experimented with flight, designing, patenting, and creating some of the first flying machines in the world. Their 1857 model airplane is recognized as the first machine to achieve flight, predating the Wright brothers?s landmark 1903 manned flight by over 40 years. The du Temple brothers? ?monoplane,? a kind of one - man glider, was shown at the 1878 World?s Fair.

        WHITE LIES

1857 - A Story. In Three Volumes. London: Trübner & Co., 1857. Original blind-stamped very pale green cloth. First Edition of this tale sited in France. In fact, as Reade points out in his Preface, "'White Lies' is a reprint." Well, not exactly. It began life as Reade's translation of Auguste Maquet's play "Le Château de Grantier." After it failed to find an English-language producer, Reade re-wrote it into this novel (which, ten years later, he re-adapted as a play, "The Double Marriage"). The novel came out at the beginning of Reade's glory days, just after IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO MEND (1856) and THE COURSE OF TRUE LOVE NEVER DID RUN SMOOTH (1857), and before LOVE ME LITTLE, LOVE ME LONG (1858).~The publisher Trübner unfortunately chose for this title's binding a very pale green cloth -- such that we have never seen a copy even approach the level of "fine." This copy is very good (volumes a bit askew, a few signatures standing a little proud, very minor wear along the joints); the cloth remains much cleaner than is usually the case, and all the original endpapers remain intact. Curiously NOT in either the Sadleir nor the Wolff collection. Provenance: penciled signature of the bibliographer of Victorian works, Walter E. Smith. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Barchester Towers [A Knight Commander's Copy]

London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1857. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (with "tattooed" for "tabooed" on page 269, line 24 in Volume II) in three Volumes, elegantly rebound in contemporary three-quarter blue leather with marbled paper to the boards and marbled endpapers, the buttressed spines lined, lettered, and decorated gilt, boards lined in gilt, and the top edge of each closed page block gilded as well, showing some edge rubbing to each Volume - particularly to the bottom of the boards where the paper is somewhat rubbed through. [Volume I is bound without the half title -- no half-title is called for in Volumes II and III, and bound without the advertisement of "The Warden" at the front of, and without single leaf of Publisher's advertisements at the rear of, Volume I -- such elements being often having been removed when sets were contemporarily rebound. (Sadleir mentions that some copies contain a 32 page catalogue at the end of Volume I and that some copies were bound without such a catalogue -- this copy has no such catalogue.)] Having a nice Provenance, this set belonged to Sir Andrew Nobel of Ardmore and Ardardan, Nobel in the Co. of Dumbarton and Knight Commander of the Bath [i.e. the second most senior grade of seven British orders of chivalry] whose bookplate and shelf location sticker grace the front pastedown of each Volume. "Barchester Towers" is Trollope's fifth book and the second title in his famed Barchester series of six books [The Warden (1855), Barchester Towers (1857), Doctor Thorne (1858), Framley Parsonage (1861), The Small House at Allington (1864), and The Last Chronicle of Barset (1867)]. Set in Trollope's fictional town of Barchester, itself lying within his fictional Barsetshire, the novel provides a delightful satire of clerical life. Of the novel, Trollope wrote in his Autobiography: "In the writing of Barchester Towers I took great delight. The Bishop and Mrs. Proudie were very real to me, as were also the troubles of the archdeacon and the loves of Mr. Slope." Walpole said of the work: "...it remains as perhaps the [in italics] type of novel of all the Trollope family. It is the one book of them all that you would give to someone who said to you, 'Now what is Trollope really like [in italics]? What is [in italics] the point about Trollope?' This book introduces and exults over one of the greatest figures in the Barsetshire Chronicles - Mrs. Proudie....The theme...is one eternally attractive - the theme of the bitter bit, the bully bullied, the war between tyrants." A Very Good, elegantly bound, copy of the first edition of one of Trollope's most important and lasting novels.
