        WELLS' NEW RAIL ROAD AND TOWNSHIP MAP OF MISSOURI AND EASTERN KANSAS FROM THE LATEST GOVERNMENT SURVEYS

      New York, 1857. In original green cloth folder, stamped in gilt. Light wear to folder. Separation at some folds. Very lightly toned, a few small stains in top left corner. Very good. A rare and handsome map of Missouri and the eastern edge of Kansas, with each county highlighted in color. This map does not appear in Modelski's railroad bibliographies or other standard sources. In the late 1850s railroads became increasingly important to the Great Plains region and the West. Most of the rail lines shown on this map emanate from St. Louis - the "Gateway to the West" - connecting her to Jefferson City and other smaller cities, with the future route of the line delineated. Several proposed lines are indicated, such as one from Jefferson City to Kansas City, and another from Keosauqua, Iowa to Kansas City. Tooley lists cartographer J.G. Wells (1821-80), but notes only one map (Ohio) by him. The front pastedown bears an advertisement for Wells' latest publications, including eighteen maps and fourteen books, for a total of almost forty items. Wells' cartographic output was short-lived but vigorous, and all his maps are very rare. This map is not located in OCLC, though an 1858 edition does appear in one copy, at the University of Virginia.

        ANSEI FUBUNSHU: NATURAL DISASTERS DURING THE ANSEI PERIOD [1854-59]: The Flood,

      Edo 1857, Hakuaido. Stitched stiff striped wrs., 3 vol. set,. very good, covers bit dusty, soiled, contents clean, solid,. 9+13+15 double page Japanese text leaves, 34 color print. illustrations, 10 double page. FIRST & ONLY BANNED EDITION. STUNNING LOOK AT THE GREAT ANSEI FLOOD A most unique & unusual set of 3 volumes, with two-four page color panoramic views. Each of these two panoramic views have opening pages that have extra pages on each end. Thus folding out from the center to make two pages on each side for a total of four page prints in all. * This set was nicely and skillfully illustrated by:Yoshitsuna [worked 1848-1868] pupil of Kuniyoshi; Kunichika [1835-1900] pupil of Toyokuni III [aka Kunisada]. The work discusses and illustrates some of the natural disasters of the period. * Ansei was the period when Commodore Perry returned to Yokohama and got a treaty of commerce with the reluctant Japanese. Perry's first arrival to Japan in 1852 caused a civil war to erupt. The factions were divided between allow- ing Westerners to establish diplomatic and commercial relat- relations versus those against allowing any foreigners into Japan. Those who were against use the motto was "Sono Joi" or "repel the foreigners." * It was believed that the eventual allowing of the American Commodore Perry & other Western powers to establish official relations with Japan during this period was the cause of "Mappo." "Mappo" is the Buddhist term to explain nature's revenge for man's wrong-doing and immoral actions. Thus, the profusion of natural disasters during this period were attributed to Perry's arrival and the buckling of the Shogun government to allow official relations with foreigners to begin. * Per Toda, "This book describes the great storm and flood that struck the city of Edo in the autumn of Ansei 3 [1856]. It was probably a private publication." What Toda missed, was that this and another similar book of the period was banned by the Shogunate [see more below]. The entry just above this book in Toda: ANSEI KENBUNSHI by Hattori was also banned, and Toda states: "...this [set] is a record of the great Ansei flood & earthquake of Edo in 1855. According to a note attached to this book, for some reason the sale was prohibited after its publication." Thus, this book does NOT have the usual, standard and required colophon, which should cite imprint, nor any censor's seal ! What this means, is that this set of books were never sanctioned by the Shogun- ate's censors, therefore the imprint meaning: place, date & publisher was purposely omitted by those who published this work. Obviously this was banned & suppressed by the Shogun- ate & publication was not allowed. Clearly the Shogunate government didnt want people throughout Japan to learn of the great & profuse amount of natural disasters, because the people would know that "Mappo" had begun and the country was to be punished for its immoral acceptance of foreigners upon the sacred land of Japan. This could cause insurrection so the Shogunate banned any publications that would hint of disasters to avoid this situation. * * DETAILED CONTENTS: The first volume begins with commentary about natural disasters and why they strike Japan. It continues with illu- strations, which shows a flood scene, with a kind of Bird- God looking down on a drowning old lady, which is a symbolic portrait of the "Mappo" theme. The next is double panel view of a lucky villager who opens his Tansu [dresser] to find a Tai or seabream [a kind of red snapper, indicating good fortune] which is an ironic image, along with an octopus caught and hung on a hook, an eel, abalone along with edible sea weed are strewn about the floor. This is an omen of good fortune for a man with a "Pure heart" ! Followed by a four panel view of the tremendous flood & damage to the village, its houses, people and how some drowned, others are being rescued, household objects are floating down the main street from the deluge. Another night scene shows a man being pull- ed from the raging torrent by a fleeing villager as they head for high ground. Another shows the great deluge of rain fall, as animals and household furniture and objects are being rescued as people try to save their dwellings. The last picture shows wrecked ships along the coast. * Volume two continues with a night scene and lightning bolts across the black sky as the rain continues to pour down, villagers flee for their life. Followed by one that shows the reconstruction of the Buddhist temple roof, as the community collects & hands up roof tiles. Next is a double view is of a coast line, a broken bridge and the wreckage of many boats. This opens into the second four-panel panoramic view of a great river flowing through the town as houses crumble, large boats crash into buildings, others on boats attempt to rescue the floating furniture and assorted house- hold goods. Yet another night view of people clinging to trees & roof tops as animals and furniture flow by in the wild torrent. The last shows a tremendous wind that has blown a poor villager off a hill into the air in flight. * Volume three shows a bewildered bird with its feathers quite ruffled. Next shows a flock of dead black birds or crows as villagers collect them for burial. The last shows a big and strong man as he braves the white-water waves to cut a great rope, as he wealds a Japanese sword. The true magnitude of this great disaster becomes crystal clear from the superb images. * It can be understood, that the Shogunate wanted to suppress this sort of catastrophic disaster from the common people. This work also pointed out, that there was absolutely no Shogunate government policy to provide any kind of financial assistance to villages. This lack of recognition by the government was just one more issue which caused unrest, rebellion and insurrection among the masses. * Works of this subject nature with such vivid graphics are truly RARE ! The complete work, a banned book was some how illegally published & distributed in very small and limited numbers. Its a wonder that it survived to inform us of the true disasters of those times. A JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTED MAP OF CHINESE DYNASTIES The other maps are fairly clean, minor center folds mended covers lacking cover papers, solid, else complete. * THE AUTHOR: Ninomiya Seiken was the compiler and also wrote the preface. It is interesting that Ninomiya did a private publishing of this book which was by and largely copied from NAGAKUBO Sekisui's work on the same subject. Actual production of the maps are: Maps 1 -3 drawn by NAGAKUBO Sekisui's original title: MOROKOSHI REKIDAI SHU GUN ENKAKU CHIZU. Maps 4 -6, NINOMIYA Seiken imitated NAGAKUBO's MOROKOSHI REKIDAI SHU GUN ENKAKU CHIZU. *** SUBJECTS OF THE MAPS: As an historical atlas, this work shows each of the dynasties beginning with the Great Ch'in, Western Ch'in, Eastern Han, Three Kingdoms, Northern & Southern Dynasties, T'ang, Ming, with a final map of Western Pacific region, it shows the West coast of North America with "Night Country" island at the top, all of Japan, Hokkaido all of Okinawa, down to the Malacca straits, Cambodia, Annam [Vietnam], Hainan Island, Guandong, Korea, Siberian and Tartary, with parts of the Great Wall, Peking and what a unified Ming Dynasty China looked like. Also other maps of the Yuan Mongol, Later Chou, Warring States, Thirty-six Provinces of Ch'in &c. This is essentially a Japanese impression of a Chinese map. * Each map shows the degrees for both latitude and longitude, as well as a Japanese compass, key to symbols. The ocean is skillfully colored in a pastel blue for the depths, fading and lighter blue effect near the coast lines. Each province, or country is a different color & properly named, with copious notes on the various islands, and inland waterways, mountains, cities, and the Gobi desert noted. Mongolia, Manchuria, Tartary is at the top, with a very large ocean above named 'Mizuumi' or Lake but this joins the Pacific ocean, leaving one the impression that this is part of the Pacific. Other period maps get more complicated as time passes into modern ages. * The earlier maps show fewer names, but still have considerable detail, with a several waterways from Japan to various destinations in China in red. Internal or land roads within China are also in red. As more political control over wider areas and the unification of China expanded, the provinces shifted, changed in size. What makes this set of maps fascinating, is they are all from a similar key block, with subtle variations in the coast line & of course the ever changing administrative areas. * An-nan [old Viet-nam or the 'Pacified South'] is always shown, as are all of the 'outer' areas or tributary areas that paid respect to the Chinese Emperors, thus the need to show these lands. Many of the maps clearly show the central or unified China area in a single color, with the outer areas of tributary lands & tributary kingdoms shown in separate and different colors. By the Han period [221 B.C.], the Chinese clearly knew themselves to be people of "Han" in contrast to other outlying ethnological people. * Very rare and unusual item and fascinating resource. * WOODBLOCK COLOR PRINTED: Entirely color printed by woodblocks on hand-made Washi paper. **** BIBLIOGRAPHY: George H. Beans: A LIST OF JAPANESE MAPS OF THE TOKUGAWA ERA, Supplement C, p.20 as entry: 1855. In fact this map was published in Ansei 4 [1857] and the colophon shows that date, but Beans entered this by the introduction date of Ansei 2nd year. Four entries later in the same volume on p.21 Beans lists [1877.2] MAP OF CHINA UNDER THE TS'ING [Qing] DYNASTY, which looks much more like this item, thus the confusing dates.         A REPORT AND TREATISE ON SLAVERY AND THE SLAVERY AGITATION. PRINTED BY ORDER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF TEXAS. DECEMBER, 1857

      Austin, 1857. Original printed green wrappers. Wrappers worn along edges and with a few small tears; worn along spine. A few scattered light fox marks. Overall, very good. A scarce antebellum Texas report on slavery and the slave trade, including a very early bibliography of printed works on slavery. John Henry Brown was chairman of the committee that produced this report, which urges Congress to abolish all laws hindering the slave trade, with lengthy reasons why it is in Texas' interest to do so. Several arguments are given in favor of the legality and practicality of slavery and the slave trade. Of great interest is a six-page "List of Works on Slavery," which was "compiled by a Southern Editor." This is a very early bibliography of American works on the subject, covering both nonfiction and fiction, and with informed annotations. Almost all the works listed carry a strong pro-South, pro-slavery viewpoint. The last copy of this Texas report that we can find offered for sale was from the Eberstadts in the 1960s. A scarce work on Texan views toward slavery in the years immediately before the Civil War.

THE STORY OF REVENGE, MURDER AND CONVERSION TO BUDDHISM BY A START HOKUSAI PUPIL: This strange and violent story was illustrated by a star Hokusai pupil Isai, [1821-1880] who was originally named Shimizu. He was an Ukiyo-E painter, printmaker, born in Edo. He lived and studied in Hokusai's house. . In the 1860's he made several prints designed to sell to foreigners. He specialized in genre works & portraits, his style is very close to that of Hokusai. * THE STORY: The story outlines the escapades of the hero as he takes revenge on his mortal enemies. The graphics excellent, and some show dramatic and great motion as the hero defends himself against would-be attackers, one looses his head as the hero delivers it from his shoulders, in another he suppresses his enemy with a Naginada cut to the throat. . In the end the hero takes the Buddhist path for his sins against humanity by killing, he becomes a wandering priest, as he is seen taking leave of his mother. The story was written by Tamamo no Urahito. * THE ILLUSTRATIONS: The set is nicely illustrated, with 22 pages of stunning images. The excellent illustrations and composition are reminiscent of the work by Hokusai, the artist's master. Excellent examples of very nice sword fight action. If the work was not signed one would assume it was the work of Katsushika Hokusai. . Illustrations copied by Mizuhara Gyoku-so, alternate title is: KOKYU EI YU ROKU. * THE BINDING: The book is 7 volumes, bound in three, as issued, with matching title slips. The breakdown of the bindings are: volumes 1,2 = part 1; vols. 3,4,5 = part 2; vols. 6,.7 = part 3. . The pagination is: vol.1: 16p.; vol.2: 21p.; vol.3: 21p.; vol.4: 21p.; vol.5: 22p.; vol.6:24p.; vol.7: 24p. . The size is 15.4 x 21.8 cm., and * CONDITION: The blind-stamped orange covers are solid, and tightly stitched. There is some discoloration to the front and back covers, most likely oxidation of the original iron-based orange color. The contents are free from any old worming, there is a mild stain in the last vol., at the leading and upper edges, text is not very affected. A bit of the usual edge/corner wear. * A NOTE: Its amazing to think this excellent item has eluded the scrutiny of both Kerlen and Toda. One would fully expect that the star pupil of Katsushiki Hokusai would get listed in most any bibliography of E-hon ! *** REFERENCES: Laurance P. The story of a man who, upon inheriting a fortune, takes up yachting. An exceedingly scarce title. The Club of Odd Volumes reprint identifies the artist as Charles Ellery Stedman. Eric Rudd, in an article published in 1974, suggests that the lithographs may have been done by Winslow Homer, though others have disputed that claim. This copy with some amateur hand coloring to the cover and the first three and final lithograph. Some marks to versos, ownership marks on preliminary page. Contents otherwise excellent. Danach kamen die Lebenden Bilder, deren reiche Auswahl aus der römischen und griechischen Mythologie hier auch aufgeführt wird. Dem Holzschnitt nach zu schließen, der barbusige Schönheiten bei einem bacchanalischen Fest zeigt, richtete sich dieser Programmpunkt wohl an historisch interessierte Familienväter.         MAP OF ROCKINGHAM CO NEW HAMPSHIRE FROM PRACTICAL SURVEYS

      Philadelphia, 1857. Expertly repaired, backed with modern linen, trimmed in red cloth, on contemporary rollers. Lightly tanned, faint old stain along upper edge, but in very good condition. A large, attractive wall map of Rockingham County, New Hampshire, in the southeast corner of the state. All the towns and villages of the county are outlined in color and several are shaded. Two large inset maps show details of Portsmouth and Exeter (with accompanying business directories), while seventeen other inset maps show details of smaller town centers. Fifteen engraved vignettes show notable buildings and residences in the county, including Exeter Court House, Swamscot Machine and South New Market Iron Foundry, and Philips, Kingston, Hampton, and Rockingham academies. There are also tables of distances and statistics. The map was drawn by the accomplished surveyor, J. Chace, Jr. Between 1854 and 1860, Chace produced some twenty maps of northeastern counties, mainly in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, but also in Connecticut, Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania. Not in Rumsey, who lists only one Chace map, of Cumberland County, Maine. An exemplary New Hampshire county map.

Volumes I to III with the Appleton imprint, volumes IV and V with the Longmans. impressively illustrated with 60 colour-tinted lithographic plates, 15 maps, several of which are folding, and numerous woodcuts, mostly in text but one large and folding. 8vo, in the publisher's handsomely blind decorated textured dark green cloth, the spines lettered in gilt, the bindings are completely uniform between the two imprints but for small lettering at the tale of the spines reading 'Longman & Co.' on volumes IV and V. xxxvi, 578, 2 (Longman's ads); xi, 676, xii, 635; xiv, 641, 24 (Longman's ads); xi, 694, errata. A very fine and bright, the text unusually clean and fresh, the plates fine and vivid with tissues intact, a few of the folding maps with small closed tears along the mounting edge with no loss whatsoever, the green cloth very bright and attractive with only highly sensitive, expert and essentially invisible beautifying along some extremities and shoulders, in all an uncommonly attractive and very desirable set. A VERY HANDSOME SET ON ONE OF THE EARLIEST GIANTS OF EUROPEAN EXPLORES OF AFRICA. Barth spent five years ranging widely and freely over northern, central, and western Africa (as you will see on the included maps) and returned with a vast bounty of information on the region's culture, geography and economy. A stunning night view of the gardens at Eaton Hall, Cheshire, from the "The Gardens of England." Published in 1857, The Gardens of England was a series of 24 plates with accompanying text depicting the diverse luxuriant gardens of various distinguished English mansions. The mid-nineteenth century was a period during which the traditional aesthetics of garden design underwent a significant change in England, as innovative ideas and concepts were being continually introduced and explored. Brooke's publication embodies the eclectic nature of Victorian garden design and constitutes an important visual survey of the varied styles that were popular among the wealthy and fashionable. Designed under the guidance of the Duke of Westminster, the picturesque garden of Eaton Hall, with its geometric parteres , medieval statues of knights and maidens, and Gothic arches, combined elements of the English formal garden with features of the medieval garden, the latter of which complemented the neo-Gothic castle in which the Duke resided. His gardens are pictured here in a dusky light that imbues the scene with an aura of romanticism and theatricality. The dramatic reflection of the moon's brilliant light in the waters of the dragon fountain, emphasizes the fountain's importance as the dominant visual centerpiece of the garden. Little is known about E. Adveno Brooke, other than that he exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution between 1853 and 1864 and his most significant publication was The Gardens of England . Cf.       [London, 1857. Pencil and watercolour, heightened with white, signed lower right with initials 'HM', on paper (sheet size: 12 1/4 x 17 5/8 inches), laid down on early mount. (Some discolouration to edges of drawing, the mount heavily browned). A fine example of Marten's work, depicting the mid-19th century uniforms of the senior regiment in the British army. The Life Guards trace their origins back to four troops of Royalist horse guards raised in the 17th century. These were re-organised into two regiments of Life Guards in 1788. The first regiment served with distinction at Waterloo as part of the Household Brigade, and at many of the major engagements throughout the 19th century. In 1877, the 1st Regiment of Life Guards were re-named the 1st Life Guards, and in 1922 they amalgamated with the 2nd Life Guards. They are now part of the Household Cavalry Regiment. Little is known of Henry Martens beyond his work for the famous illustrated book publisher Rudolph Ackermann. Martens worked mainly in watercolour (as here), producing military subjects, and specialising in accurate depictions of the contemporary uniforms of the Army in Britain and India. His best known work Costumes of the British Army was published by Ackermann between 1849 and 1853 and included 44 hand-coloured aquatint plates. He did also exhibit his pictures: between 1828 and 1842 he exhibited 34 water-colours at the Society of British Artists and he also showed his work at the British Institution. A second version of the present image is in the famous Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection at the Brown University Library. Cf. Anne S.K. Mineralogen Anton Schrötter von Kristelli (1802-1875). - Martius bereiste 1817-1820 gemeinsam mit dem Zoologen Johann Baptist Spix im Auftrag von König Maximilian I. Joseph von Bayern Brasilien und war 1840 Begründer und erster Herausgeber der „Flora brasiliensis“. Anschließend lehrte Martius seit 1826 als Professor der Botanik an der Universität München und war seit 1832 Direktor des Botanischen Gartens. --- Der in Olmütz geborene Anton Schrötter, Sohn eines Apothekers, studierte ab 1822 zunächst auf Wunsch seines Vaters in Wien Medizin, wechselte dann aber unter dem Einfluss von Friedrich Mohs zu den naturwissenschaftlichen Fächern, speziell der Mineralogie. 1827 erhielt er eine Assistentenstelle für Physik und Mathematik an der Universität Wien. 1830 wurde er Professor für Physik und Chemie am Technischen Institut Joanneum in Graz. Während eines halbjährigen Urlaubs im Jahre 1838 besuchte er chemische Institute in Göttingen, Heidelberg, Frankfurt und Paris. In Gießen machte er sich bei Justus von Liebig mit der organischen Elementaranalyse vertraut. Ab 1843 arbeitete er als Professor für technische Chemie am Polytechnischen Institut der Universität Wien und übernahm dort 1845 die Professur für allgemeine Chemie. Schrötter war neben Baumgartner, Ettingshausen und Haidinger einer der Begründer der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien und wurde 1850 ihr Generalsekretär. Die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina wählte Schrötter 1856 zu ihrem Mitglied. Ab 1868 leitete er das österreichische Hauptmünzamt und wurde gleichzeitig zum Ministerialrat ernannt. Er wurde 1874 in den Ruhestand versetzt und eröffnete in seiner Wohnung ein Privatlaboratorium, in dem er Studien über Edelmetalle betrieb. 1875 starb er in Wien. Schrötter hat in seinem Leben ca. 60 wissenschaftliche Publikationen verfasst. Ab 1845 beschäftigte Schrötter sich intensiv mit Phosphor. 1848 gelang ihm der Nachweis der schon von Berzelius geäußerten Vermutung, dass roter Phosphor eine allotrope Modifikation des weißen Phosphors, nicht aber eine Phosphorverbindung ist. Schrötter wandelte weißen Phosphor durch Erhitzen in roten um, den man zeitweise Schrötterschen Phosphor nannte. Sein Verfahren zur Darstellung desselben revolutionierte die Streichholzindustrie, wo roter Phosphor schon bald als Bestandteil der Reibflächen genutzt wurde. It is, moreover, of historical interest as showing how little was definitely known of the region.? 5,000 copies were printed for the Senate and 5,000 for the House, altogether 10,000 copies of volume I, and only 3,000 copies each of volume II (parts 1 and 2). According to Jenkins: ?Alarmed at the high cost of the first volume, Congress ordered much smaller printings of the last two volumes, making a complete set difficult to obtain.? Some of the artists who contributed to the illustrations are Arthur Schott, John E Weyss, Augustus de Vaudricourt, and a map by Lt. Michler. This colorful map by Phelps appeared in several guides to New York, including his own Stranger's and Citizens Guide of 1857. The map depicts the city divided into wards and fire districts, with an early layout of Central Park. Parts of Brooklyn and New Jersey are shown, and the numerous ferry lines crossing the rivers are identified. This copy a rare variant, with an advertisement for a men's clothing store in the upper right corner, in place of the word "Map" found on the other issue. To the Austrian vice admiral Bernhard von Wüllerstorf-Urbair, captain of the frigate "Novara": a letter of farewell but a few weeks before the ship's departure for the Austrian Navy's first circumnavigation of the globe, praising the daring enterprise and offering his calculations, which he hopes will assist the explorers. The "Novara" sailed from Trieste on April 30th and would not return until three months after Humboldt's death. In full: "Ew. Hochwohlg. wollen, als Befehlshaber Sr. Maj. Küsel (etched bookplate) Very rare work on the fish of Scandinavia: there is only one other copy listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty years. The chief glory of this work is the series of excellent finely hand-coloured lithographs, the work of Wilhelm von Wright (1810-1887). He was a Finnish-born natural history painter, illustrator and lithographer of rare talent. The middle of three brothers who made their living as painters, illustrators or naturalists, he moved to Stockholm in 1828 to assist his eldest brother Magnus with his work on his Svenska Foglar. The publication of the present work (Wilhelm's masterpiece) began in 1836 and was completed with the help of his younger brother Ferdinand in 1857. One of the great early works on the ichthyology of northern Europe, it was issued in ten parts (including the supplement ) with the plates either uncoloured or finely hand-coloured (as here). Wilhelm von Wright, who had taken Swedish nationality in 1834, married in 1845, settled in Marieberg in Bohuslän, and spent the rest of his working life in Sweden. The text was started by the director of the Natural History Museum in Stockholm Professor Fries and, after his early death, was completed by C.U. Liphard assossirt (sic!) und auf dem Fleischerplatz in einer Bude von 2000 Quadratfuß groß, ihre aus den Seltensten Exemplaren des Thierreichs bestehenden Menagerie während der Messe zur Schau ausgestellt. Da man schon oft Gelegenheit hatte, hier mehrere große Menagerien von Kreuzberg und anderen zu sehen, so schmeicheln wir uns doch, daß nie eine Löwen-Familie wie die unsere gezeigt wurde, worunter sich besonders auszeichnen, die beiden Königs-Löwen, die bereits von allen deutschen Fürsten mit Staunen gesehen und als die Größten und Schönsten Exemplare Europas anerkannt wurden, unter anderen sind die beiden Königs-Tiger von seltener Schönheit, ferner ein Silber-Löwe, der einzigste der bis jetzt in einer Menagerie gezeigt wurde, so wie mehrere seltene, andere Thiere. - Fräulein Liphard wird sich in den Käfig zum Panther begeben und mit demselben ihre seltenen Künste und Dressur ausführen, sowie Madame Scholz, die durch ihre Kühnheit auf die seltenste Weise mit Hyänen, Pantern und Tigern die hier noch nie gesehene Dressur und Abrichtung ausführen.

Each page has a large bold amusing hand coloured illustration occupying 3/4 of the page, underneath each is a 7 line verse. The story of a very small elegant man suffering unrequited love for a very large lady with a voice like a lion's roar. She puts him in a hat box, she sits on him when he tries to steal a kiss standing on a chair; he disconsolately goes walking and happens to meet a charming modest little lady who agrees to marry him. Respined in matching paper, restitched, centre page reglued expertly into covers, a few minor marks to lower cover, very small light stain to first 2 pages, small closed tear to lower margin of page 4 just entering 5 mm (¼") into image, neatly repaired, no loss, small faint water stain to same margin, a few pale fingermarks. A very good copy of a scarce delightful book. The only copies we could locate are the British Library copy and one in Yale. Not in Osborne, Gumuchian or Oppenheimer Catalogue.       Boston, 1857. Folio. Original cloth boards, neatly rebacked in morocco, gilt. Ink stamp of the Library of the First Corps of Cadets of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia at bottom of titlepage. A few chips and tears in text leaves, plates with some minor edge wear. Very good. Regulations for the uniforms of the United States Army in the mid-19th century, with large plates illustrating the different details of each uniform. The book was published by Robert Weir, styled as an "Army, Naval, and Civic Costumer" on the titlepage. It also contains pay tables, list of warships, military laws, form of review, dress parade, and tactics. The last thirty pages contain advertisements, several of them for purveyors of pianos. Only four copies listed on OCLC: American Antiquarian Society, New-York Historical Society, Smithsonian, Mariner's Museum Library.

      Berne and Neuchatel: Societe Litteraire (F. L. Davoine), 1857. First Edition. Decorated Cloth. Very Good. 8vo. 26 by 16.5 cm. 36 pp., followed by 44 hand-colored plates, the first serving as a decorative title to the plate section, and the following 43 being armorial plates, many of which are striking and/or beautiful. Text section with scattered light to moderate foxing, as typical with the paper stock used. Some plates with a trivial amount of light foxing, but plates are generally bright and clean. Spine with repaired tear near upper extremity. Otherwise, the decorative cloth blindstamped and gilded binding is handsome and well-preserved. All edges gilt. A lovely copy overall.
