        Allosorus crispus [Parsley Fern]

London: Bradbury & Evans, 1856. Colour nature-printed engraving. Very good condition. A beautiful nature-printed plate from Moore's "The Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland". Moore's important work on nature printing was one of the first of the genre printed in England. The beautifully executed plates were produced under the direction of Henry Bradbury, England's first nature printer, and are considered to be among the finest pieces of nature printing ever completed. The plates were produced "... by passing the plant, under pressure, between a plate of soft lead from which an electrotype could be made" (Blunt). As a result, they recorded the smallest details of flowers and the finest venations of leaves. Bradbury, whose father was of the publishing house Bradbury & Evans, studied at the Imperial Printing Office in Vienna. His interest in printing extended to "... the production of bank notes and the security of paper money, on which he discoursed at the Royal Institute" (DNB) and to the history of printing. He had many ideas for lavish and extensive works, including nature-printed books on fungi and trees and a work on the graphic arts of the nineteenth century, but none of these were ever realised. He died in 1860 at the age of twenty-nine. Cf. Nissen BBI 1400; cf. Stafleu and Cowan TL2 6275; cf. DeBelder 237; cf. Cave and Wakeman 25; cf. Fischer 89; cf. Hofer Bequest 74n.

Krim-Girai, Khan of the Crimea. Translated from the German of Theodore Mundt.

London: John Murray, 1856 - Octavo. Original red linen-grained cloth, title gilt to spine, elaborate panelling in blind to boards, light green surface-paper endpapers. A little rubbed overall, bumped at the corners, head and tail of the spine crumpled and with minor chipping, pale toning, some light foxing, but overall a very good copy. First edition, a very pleasing association copy, inscribed "With the Translator's love" on the first blank and with the bookplate of Lord Raglan to the front pastedown. Richard Henry FitzRoy Somerset, second baron Raglan, was married to Eliot's cousin, Susan Caroline. His father, recently deceased at the time of presentation, had famously commanded the British forces in the Crimea, being responsible for the victories at the Alma and at Inkerman, and considered by some to be culpable for the disaster at Balaklava. The First baron had died at Sebastopol of a "broken heart" (ODNB) just ten days after the bloody failure of the assault of 18 June 1855, and in 1858 his successor was gifted Cefntilla Court in Monmouthshire by "1623 of the 'friends, admirers, and comrades' of his father as a mark of gratitude and to enable the family to maintain the port of the ennobled" (Newman, Gwent/Monmouthshire; Buildings of Wales series, p. 272). The modern Cefntilla bookplate is mounted beneath Raglan's on the front pastedown. The translator joined the diplomatic service from Eton, and from 1849 to 1859 served as attaché at Hanover, Lisbon, Berlin, Constantinople, and St Petersburg. Subsequent postings took him to Rio de Janeiro, Athens, Lisbon, and finally Washington. He resigned in 1865 and was elected MP for Devonport in 1866, holding the seat until 1868. He entered the House of Lords in 1870, dying in 1881. The association gains poignancy from the fact that Eliot's elder brother, the Hon. Granville Charles Cornwallis Eliot, a captain in the Coldstream Guards, had been killed, shot through the head, at Inkerman. Qirim Giray (d. 1769), was one of the most influential rulers of the Crimean Khanate, a scion of the ruling Giray clan, direct descendants of Genghis Khan, and possessed of distinct geopolitical ambitions. "A clever, affable man with a weakness for practical jokes involving severed heads", he aspired to an alliance with Frederick the Great against the Russians, and conspired to similar ends with the baron de Tott, becoming a "close personal friend", who, under Tott's influence, developed "an enthusiasm for French cuisine (especially its wine-based sauces), and requested that Tartuffe be translated into Turkish for performance by the court buffoons The two spent long evenings talking politics inside the crimson-lined tent, Qirim delivering his 'opinions on the abuses and advantages of liberty, on the principles of honour, or the laws and maxims of government, in a manner which would have done honour to Montesquieu himself'" (Reid, Borderland: A Journey through the History of Ukraine, internal quotations from the Memoirs of the Baron de Tott). The author of this work, Theodor Mundt, was a German philologist and librarian, best known for his writings on aesthetics, and for his advocacy of the emancipation of women, who compiled the memoir "on account of its intrinsic interest as well as the relation it bears to the present war" (Preface). An attractively-provenanced and well-preserved copy of this seldom seen and interesting biography. Uncommon, just eight copies on Copac. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

ESQUISSES PHOTOGRAPHIQUES: A PROPOS DE L'EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE ET DE LA GUERRE D'ORIENT. HISTORIQUE DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE- DEVELOPPEMENTS-APPLICATIONS-BIOGRAPHIES ET PORTRAITS

Paris: Grassart; A. Gaudin et Frère, 1856. First edition. 12mo., vii, 220 pp., a.e.g. Publisher's blue cloth, decorated in blind on the covers and spine. The binding shows blistering and fading from dampness, with a faint and diminishing tidemark through p. 11 and again on the last 30 pages, primarily to the blank upper margin. Tipped-in, between the half-tile and title page is a decoratively printed leaf for F. Cantel, Libraire, Rue Hautefeuille, 5. In all, this remains a good copy. Ernest Lucan (1828 - 1879) trained as a painter and became one of the most influential editors and critics of the international photographic community during the second half of the nineteenth century. As a founding member of the Sociéte Héliographique, Lucan and Jules-Claude Ziégler started their weekly journal in 1851, LA LUMIÈRE, the first European journal of photography. The ownership of the journal changed hands and Lucan was appointed editor-in-chief, a postion he held through 1860. His associates were, Baron Gros, Édouard Baldus, Hippolyte Bayard, Henri Le Secq, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Nègre, Abel Niépce de Saint-Victor, Edmond Becquerel, Eugène Delacroix, Champfleury, Charles Chevalier, N.P. Lerebours, Comte L. de Laborde, Prince de Montléart, and Baron de Montesquieu, among others, and his reviews of their photographs and technical accomplishments were glowing. In 1856, Lucan published ESQUISSES PHOTOGRAPHIQUES... "The most crucial single-volume source for the study of early French photography, Lacan's text is a thoroughly critical examination of the state of the art at that time. The editor of La Lumiere, Lacan treats the history of photography's invention, its various applications to the Fine Arts and to science, and its extensions into photogravure and photolithography" (text from Arno Press in the series The Sources of Modern Photography). A large portion of this volume is taken up with his review of the 1855 Exposition Universelle, with lenghty comments on the images of Levi L. Hill, Henri Le Secq, Édouard Baldus, the Bisson brothers, Roger Fenton, and others. WorldCat locates a total of thirteen copies worldwide, with Columbia University, University of Texas, University of Maryland - Baltimore, Smithsonian, New York Public Library and George Eastman House as the only U.S. holders. Bellier de la Chavignerie, Manuel Bibliographie du Photographe Francais, 1863, No. 154, in the section of Expositions et Critiques. Roosens and Salu fail to locate this title.

According to the broadside the land is among the richest and fertile in the state, and the cost will vary between $5-$25 an acre.         Dog and Gun; A Few Loose Chapters on Shooting, Among Which Will Be Found Some Anecdotes and Incidents (HEAVILY CORRECTED IN PENCIL, POSSIBLE AUTHOR'S COPY)

Ornage Judd & Company, Agricultural Publishers, New York 1856 - Intact first edition in original brown cloth binding of this popular upland hunting book of the era is holding together well, gilt spine titles still easily legible, but there is some bubbling of the cloth covering of the boards, rendering exterior not terribly attractive, so call this slim volume "fair-to-good." Copyright date 1856 with no later dates showing. Some sections (not all) heavily corrected and edited in pencil, including some section of the final chapter, "Snipe Shooting in Florida," which is attributed to the presumably pseudonymous "Cor De Chasse," some of those latter sections being marked "used." These suggest author's corrections, though whether for a revised edition or in preparation for a reading is unclear. Book is NOT signed by author or editor, and identity of the annotator is only conjectural, though a comparison with the revised, 1858 edition might prove instructive. (We do not currently have one on hand.) 105 pp., followed by 3 pp. publisher's ads. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Pictorial Advertising Broad Sheet: Coleman's California Line

California, 1856. Striking chromolithographic image of one of the ships of the line (generic) plowing through calm waters with its pennant on the main mast and the American flag flying from the stern. Besides the Line name printed on one of the main sails, there is no other text. The realistic image is bordered in red with gold decoration and the border itself is white and lace like. William Tell Coleman (1824-1893) moved to San Francisco in 1849 where he became involved with the shipping and commission business. In 1856 he established his own shipping line to cater to the demand of the east coasters who wanted to travel to the gold diggings. the Line ran until 1864. Coleman is best remembered for setting up the "Committee of Vigilance" to quell the riots in San Francisco which occurred due to anti-Asian sentiment, which according to Wikipedia, had the aim of stopping the formation of a Workingman's Party. The vigilante force with their pick handle weapons were effective for a time but ultimately a People's Party was formed and took control of San Francisco in 1867. This was followed in 1882 with Senator Kearney being able to pass the Chinese Exclusion Act. Small chip from the top right corner only in the white. There has been damp which has left a tide mark over most of the sheet, visible only from the rear. One 1/2" brown spot appears in the red border, otherwise good+ condition. 12 1/2 x 9"

DOCUMENTS RELATIVE TO THE COLONIAL HISTORY OF THE STATE OF NEW-YORK PROCURED IN HOLLAND, ENGLAND AND FRANCE

Albany: Weed, Parsons and Company, Printers, 0000. Eleven volumes (ten volumes plus General Index), uniformly bound in black ribbed cloth with decorative stamping on both covers. Dates range from 1856 in volume I to 1861 in the General Index. 12 by 9 inches. These have had the backstrips and endpapers professionally and beautifully replaced. All volumes but one (the index) have either some or all of the original backstrips laid in. The new backstrips are glossy black leather with raised bands and bright gilt lettering. Interiors: foxing varies from volume to volume, from only intermittent to quite heavy in places to practically none. A few volumes have some notations in the margins. The color frontispiece foldout map in Volume I has a short tear at one edge, many of the foldouts are heavily foxed, along with adjacent leaves, and a few have tears. Generally speaking, as a set, the foxing is intermittent and for the most part, light. Exterior: Some scuffing to the covers. They are all very tightly bound. The backstrips, of course, are lovely, bright and "as new," so the set is quite stunning on the shelf. One would be hard-pressed to find a better set than this, both eminently useable and extremely attractive.. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket.
