        Map of Eastern Kansas

Lawrence, Kansas [Boston: Published by J. P. Jewett and Co.; lithographed by L. H. Bradford & Co.]: 1856. Lithographed folding pocket map, Indian lands hand-coloured, three vignette views of buildings in Kansas. Folds into original green cloth covers, covers decoratively blocked in blind, upper cover titled in gilt, printed letter by Whitman and Searl on the inside front pastedown. 27 1/4 x 21 inches. A Bleeding Kansas cartographic rarity: a map intended to promote Free Soil, anti-slavery activists to the region. The passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 created those territories with the provision that the settlers in those states would decide whether slavery would be lawful. The border state of Kansas thus became a breeding ground for anti- and pro-slavery conflict. Pro-slavery Missourians, known as border ruffians, flooded into the eastern half of the state, specifically along the Missouri River where slave-based agriculture would be feasible. Anti-slavery forces rallied, sending settlers from the North, with most coming from New England. Free state settlements were created in Topeka (identified on the map as the "temporary state capital") and Lawrence (depicted here on the map as a red dot with a small American flag). On this map, both of those free soil strongholds are shown with encampments of "Shannon's Posse" nearby, dated December 1855 -- pro-slavery forces intended to intimidate the Topeka Constitutional Convention. The Kansas troubles are further depicted with the three vignette views, two showing the before and after images of the Eldrige House. Also known as the Free State Hotel, the house served as temporary quarters to incoming New Englanders. Border ruffians destroyed the building on May 21, 1856. It was in retaliation to this attack and others in Lawrence on that day, that John Brown attacked pro-slavery settlers in what would become known as the Pottawatomie Massacre, igniting further violence in the region, and making Bleeding Kansas a major portent to the Civil War. Interestingly, on the advertisement by Whitman and Searle on the inside front wrapper, no mention is made of the troubles, even though Whitman was a known abolitionist and Jewett, the publisher, was the publisher of Uncle Tom's Cabin. The two land agents offer their services to immigrants, offering to find plots, supply information to interested parties, and complete surveys. The primary colored features on the map are Native American tribal lands, shown as separate and with defined boundaries meant to entice settlers to a region without Indian troubles. Forts shown on the map include Fort Riley (both on the larger map and as an unbordered inset at lower left), Fort Leavenworth, and Fort Scott (abandoned). Also shown are Fort Laramie Road, California Road, Oregon Road, and Santa Fe Road. This map, however, is at its essence a cartographic representation of the slavery conflict and the events leading to the Civil War.         LIBERTY, THE FAIR MAID OF KANSAS - IN THE HANDS OF THE BORDER RUFFIANS

[Philadelphia: John L. Magee, 1856].. Uncolored lithograph, 14 x 19 1/2 inches. Toned, with irregular further darkening in the margins, not affecting image. Upper margin with several small tears, one repaired with tape on verso. About good overall. Matted. A powerful American political print, brutally satirizing the Democratic leaders who crafted and passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, one of the most controversial and divisive pieces of legislation of the antebellum era. The Kansas-Nebraska Act provided for the eventual admission of those two territories as states, and left the question of whether slavery would be allowed to local popular sovereignty, thereby nullifying the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850. The main result of the legislation was to further divide the country into anti-slavery "free- soilers" (mostly in the north and represented by the emerging Republican party) and pro- slavery southerners and westerners (represented by the Democrats). Another result was the migration into Kansas (mostly from Missouri) of so- called "border ruffians" who would vote in Kansas elections in a pro- slavery manner, which they hoped would eventually bring Kansas into the Union as a slave state. Violence inevitably followed as "border ruffians" and "free-soilers" fought it out in Kansas in a sort of civil war. This print, which appeared during the presidential campaign of 1856, shows a weak and defenseless Lady Liberty, draped in an American flag, menaced by an array of Democratic politicians and begging for mercy. President Franklin Pierce, dressed in the buckskins of a border ruffian, holds a rifle, with a pistol, knife, tomahawk, and scalp in his belt. He leers at Liberty and assures her that he will protect her in the manner shown "over the left." The left rear of the print shows the home of a settler being burned by ruffians as a helpless, mad widow looks on. Senator Lewis Cass, a longtime supporter of "popular sovereignty," also exhibits bad intentions toward Liberty. On the far right, Senator Stephen Douglas, architect of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, is shown scalping a farmer. On the left James Buchanan, the Democrats' choice to succeed Pierce, and Secretary of State William Marcy empty the pockets of another victim. Other scenes in the background show an attack on an emigrant train, attacks on defenseless men, and the shooting of a helpless woman. The implication of the print is clear: the Democratic leaders who passed the Kansas- Nebraska Act were not only responsible for the environment that led to the crimes being committed in Kansas, they were accomplices themselves. Reilly calls this print "a bitter indictment of the Democratic administration's responsibility for violence and bloodshed in Kansas in the wake of the 1854 Kansas- Nebraska Act." Nevins and Weitenkampf call it "a savage cartoon...[that] caused many previously moderate Northerners to face the slavery issue with new determination." Reilly and others attribute the print to John Magee of Philadelphia, based on stylistic and topical similarities with other prints done by Magee in the period. OCLC locates a total of only seven copies. A powerful print, addressing the most important issue of the day. REILLY, AMERICAN POLITICAL PRINTS, 1856- 9. WEITENKAMPF, p.115. This compendium is an excellent source of early New York City history.

[THREE MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENTS RELATING TO A PROPOSED PORT FOR THE SOUTHERN COAST OF THE PROVINCE OF SANCTI SPIRITUS]

Sancti Spiritus, Cuba. 1856-1858.. 114pp. in three parts. Small quarto. Dbd. Light toning and foxing. Very good. Detailed reports on the proposed public works project concerning a port on the Zaza River for the province of Sancti Spiritus in central Cuba. The Zaza River reaches the sea at the small town of Tunas de Zaza, presumably the location of the port under discussion. There is much detail on both the need for the port and proposals for construction. The engineer discusses the difficulties involved, such as flooding in the river delta, as well as the benefits to commerce, both foreign and domestic. There is also mention of the need for security forces to deter any insurrection on the part of slaves. The first two documents are addressed by Joaquin Casariego to the Governor, while the last is signed by Juan Marin and Juan Falces.

Album of 93 Original Water Colour Paintings by Richard Ford (21 April 1796 – 31 Aug 1858), Compiled by His Wife, Mary Ford (25 Jan 1816 – 4 March 1910)

1856. () 83 leaves. Very good. Large octavo (11.75" X 9.5"). Recently finely bound in full speckled calf with blindstamped diamond design to both boards. Edges and sides of boards stamped in rolled gilt design. Spine in 6 compartments; red morocco label with gilt title to one compartment, remainder stamped heavily in gilt. Raised bands. Marbled endpapers. A.e.g. With 83 leaves containing 93 mounted water colours by Ford, a letter introducing the album, a manuscript index by Mary Ford, and a colour portrait miniature of Richard Ford on ivory. Some watercolours in sepia tones and the remainder in full colour. Manuscript titles to most paintings in the hand of Mary Ford. Some sketches loosely mounted, with Ford's manuscript notes and signatures on the back. Occasional spotting and age toning to margins of leaves. A full description of each watercolour available on request. The water colours included in this album were composed after Ford's marriage to his third wife, Mary Molseworth, on June 12, 1851. That August, Ford and Mary left on a grand tour of England and Scotland and many of the paintings here must have been completed during this honeymoon trip. Featured are many religious sites in England and Scotland, including churches, cathedrals, and abbeys at, Iffley, York, Worcester, and Durham composed, no doubt, by Ford for his young bride, "a learned ecclesiologist [who] has been enchanted with the cathedrals of Hereford, Tewksbury, Gloucester, Worcester, and York, but most of all with most Princely Durham (Robertson 259)". Their trip also took them to Bolsover Castle, Barnard Castle, Kelso, and the Lake District, most of which are depicted in the album's water colours. Also included are scenes from France, including several of Dieppe and one of the Pyrenees, dated 1856. These must be among Ford's last foreign sketches, as his health continued to decline after returning to London from Paris. As would be expected from a travel writer, most of the paintings are of specific locations and scenes, titled accordingly. This album, crafted by Mary Ford within just a few short months after Richard Ford's passing, stands as a poignant memorial to her husband, his art, and their marriage. Mary's choice to include so many images composed during their trips together-- and of Mary's favorite subjects-- must have been an emotional one. A tremendous archive of the great travel writer, artist, and critic, Richard Ford, with an unparalleled and moving familial provenance. A copy of Ford's biography is included with the book: Robertson, Ian. Richard Ford1 796-1858: Hispanophile, Connoisseur and Critic. Norfolk, UK, 2004..

Election for West Camden. Speeches of Henry Molesworth Oxley

Sydney,: Reading and Wellbank, n.d. but, 1856.. Octavo, inscribed "from Mr Macarthur" on the title-page, a little toned, a few spots; very good in recent neat brown cloth. Rare pamphlet relating to the first parliament in New South Wales, printing the thoughts of James Macarthur relating to his election as the member for West Camden. Inscribed "from Mr. Macarthur" at the head of the title-page.James Macarthur was born at Elizabeth Farm in Parramatta, schooled in England and Europe, but returned to New South Wales in 1817 to manage the family estates. Astute and considered, he was responsible for many innovations including pursuing his interest in the cultivation of vines, and working to improve the family's merino flock. He worked hard as a politician, and in 1837 published his work on New South Wales, its Present State and Future Prospects. The present work is the most important printed document relating to his brief political career. In 1856 he was elected as one of the founding members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, representing Camden. Macarthur served briefly as colonial treasurer, but soon resigned his seat in order to be re-elected for West Camden. In 1859 he retired. This rare pamphlet prints Macarthur's address of June 1856, together with the comments of his primary supporter Henry Molesworth Oxley, the younger son of the explorer John Oxley. Henry Oxley would in turn be elected as member for Camden on Macarthur's retirement.Ferguson knew only his own copy and a second in the Mitchell Library.Ferguson, 13715.

Graphic Scenes in the Japan expedition

New York: Putnam, 1856. Large folio. (20 1/4 x 15 inches). 12 leaves letterpress text. 10 lithographic prints on proof paper, tipped onto bristol board (one tinted portrait of Perry from a daguerreotype by P. Haas, nine views by Heine printed in colours and finished by hand) all printed by Sarony & Co. Publisher's wrappers within half dark maroon morocco over publisher's cloth portfolio. Housed in a modern red morocco backed box. The very rare deluxe coloured issue on card of this important work recording Commodore Perry's expedition to Japan. Evidence of the rarity of this album is given by Bennett writing in 1947: "Obviously several copies must have been preserved, but the one described seems to be the only one yet offered for public sale." William Heine was the official artist of Commodore Matthew C. Perry's expedition to Japan in 1853-54. On returning to the United States he produced several series of prints commemorating the trip. A group of six elephant-folio prints appeared in 1855, and the following year the present volume was issued, in a smaller format, with different images and with explanatory text. Both projects employed the New York lithographic firm of Sarony, probably the best lithographers in the United States at that time. "As artistic productions, the pictures speak for themselves ... none superior to them have been executed in the United States, and they have no cause to shun comparison with some of the best productions of Europe" (Introduction). Copies were produced on regular paper and in the deluxe form, as in the present copy, mounted on bristol board and beautifully finished by hand. The plates are numbered and titled as follows [1. portrait of Perry]; 2. Macao from Penha Hill; 3. Whampoa Pagoda; 4. Old China Street, Canton; 5. Kung-kwa at On- na, Lew-Chew; 6. Mia or road side chapel at Yokuhama; 7. Temple of Ben- teng in the harbor of Simoda; 8. Street and bridge at Simoda; 9. Temple of the Ha-tshu Man-ya-tshu-ro at Simoda; 10. Grave yard at Simoda Dio Zenge. Bennett describes the plates as "many times finer than those in the regular account of the Perry expedition." His remarks on the work's great rarity are confirmed by its absence from both the Abbey catalogue and Cordier's Japanese bibliography. Bennett, p.53. McGrath, American Color Plate Books 123.

Eight photographic glass negative plates and prints

Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856-1931) was a German aristocrat, wealthy and well educated but of delicate health. He  was advised to seek out a mild climate to recuperate. With financial help from his family he moved in 1876 to Taormina, a then quiet town on the northeast coast of Sicily, which he came to say was his "paradise on earth". From time to time he would visit his cousin, Wilhelm von Plüschow, in Naples who taught him the techniques of photography. In Taormina there was much to photograph--the rugged panoramas, the Greek and Roman remains which were everywhere, and of course the young men and boys whose classical beauty overwhelmed him. He posed his models, often unclothed, on the terrace of his villa, at one of the picturesque ruins near at hand, or against one of the many striking vistas. Von Gloeden made no secret of his homosexuality but was accepted by his neighbors who seemed able to ignore what he was doing with their sons. They appear to have loved him in fact. He certainly provided much welcome money, as outright payment or as royalties to his models, or other support when the families were in difficulty, and his aristocratic background may have added a touch of glamor. From 1883 his photographs began to be noticed. There was an exhibition at the Royal Photographic Society in London, and his photographs were published in various German periodicals devoted to art and even in the National Geographic in the United States. The period from 1890 to the outbreak of World War One was his most productive period. In the end he may have taken as many as 7000 pictures. None were overtly sexual, although the homoerotic content was clear. They had a wide appeal, and his villa at Taormina became a place for the rich and famous to visit. Oscar Wilde came, as as did King Edward VII, André Gide, Richard Strauss, Rudyard Kipling, to mention only a few. His idyl came to an end in 1915 when Italy joined the Allied side. Von Gloeden returned to Germany. One of the first boys he photographed, Pancrazio Bucini, known as "il Moro" because of his dark good looks, who had become his devoted companion, kept an eye on the villa. Von Gloeden was able to return in 1919 which turned out to be a sad homecoming for him because he was able again to review the images of so many youths whose lives were lost during the war. Von Gloeden died in 1931. Everything was inherited by Pancrazio Bucini who kept it all lovingly. However in 1933 the Italian Fascist government confiscated and destroyed around 1000 glass negatives. Then in 1936 there was an "anti-vice" campaign and another 1000 negatives were smashed. Bucini stoutly defended his late friend, although he had to endure years of imprisonment. What remains today are about a 1000 glass plates. The Kinsey Institute has 250. The rest are dispersed in various private and public collections.

NY., 1856.. b/w plates, ills. folding charts. A landmark in American exploration, these are the records of the first U.S. government-sponsored exploring expedition. Map of Hawaii missing from vol. 4, as cited by Haskell 13. (It appears never to have been bound in this set.) See Haskell 13 and 7. A tall, clean, bright copy attractively bound in half calf over marbled boards with red and black spine labels and gilt decoration.

Lake Ngami; or, Explorations and Discoveries, during Four Years' Wanderings in the Wilds of South Western Africa.

By Charles John Anderson. With a map, and numerous illustrations representing sporting adventures, subjects of natural history, devices för destroying wild animals, &c. London, Hurst and Blackett, 1856. 8vo. xviii,+ 536 pp.+ large fold. engr. map,+ 16 lith. plates. Wood engravings in text. Publ. gilt pictorial cloth, slightly faded. Small tear on top of spine. Fine copy from the library of Måns Ryberg. Mendelssohn p. 41. First edition of the Swedish Africa explorer and big game hunter Charles John Andersson's first book. It describes two expeditions made by Andersson, the first in company with Francis Galton to Nangoro Werft in 1851-52, and the other is when he travelled by himself to the Lake Ngami in 1853. Few books, according to Mendelssohn, give so "full and complete an account of Namaqualand, Damaraland, and the Ovampo country, and the description of the fauna of these countries is absolutely unequalled".
