[Broadside] William Penn's Treaty with the Indians. This justly celebrated treaty, was formed in the year 1682; under the large elm at Shackamaxon, now Kensington, Philadelphia.

Philadelphia: Engraved & printed by Illman & Sons, 211 Arch St., [1856-7].. 1 sheet. First edition. Illus. with hand-colored engraving. Most likely published late 1856 by the publisher of the Public Leger, Philadelphia, Swain & Abell, as a New Year's Day annual greeting to the subscribers of The Ledger Carrier in 1857. A classic and sentimental view of the founding of America and its relations with the country's original inhabitants, the print depicts the seaside encounter between American colonists and Native Americans. "A group of natives crowds around two young colonists, who kneel at the center of the image with a roll of cloth. Behind them, William Penn stands with a large sheet of paper in his left hand. In the right foreground is a large wooden chest; in the left, a bow and quiver of arrows. Sailors unload cargo from ships on the sea in the right background. Behind the central figures, the main street of a colonial town rise up beside Indian tents, " (AAS). A variation after a painting by Benjamin West. William Penn's facsimile signature is under the image along with eight lines of poetry: "How beautiful the scene portrayed above, A treaty, framed in Justice, Truth, and Love! Our City's Founder and the peaceful 'Friends'. Stoop to no subterfuge, to gain their ends; While with unswerving confidence, around Their Indian brethren occupy the ground. This incident, a maxim may afford, And prove our PENN was 'mightier than the sword'." Scarce, even more so hand-colored. OCLC locates only two libraries with this broadside, neither colored: American Antiquarian Society and Univ. Mich. Clements Lib. (its copy imperfect: foxing and discoloration, affecting image). Seven other locations but with a digital image only. A very good copy, some light foxing, a few tiny spots on the text.

Leaves of Grass - Second Edition

Brooklyn: Fowler & Wells, 1856. Brooklyn, NY [Fowler and Wells], 1856: Second Edition, one of only 1,000 copies rumored to have been printed. Published one year after the first edition, this edition contains 20 new poems and a featured a new portable format. The publishers withheld their names due to the controversial reviews from the first edition. Recently rebound in half leather binding with raised bands and gilt tooling, with the original cloth preserved over boards. New end papers and tissue guard. The text block shows foxing. Brackets in margins with a few underlines and a handful of small notations, most are in pencil (and likely erasable) but around 25 pages have them in faded black ink. Faint tide marks at top of prelims, and in margins of a few pages. Reading creases to a few page corners. An extremely scarce and very early edition of Walt Whitman's iconic collection.

In recent quarter leather binding with raised bands, gilt compartments, and gilt titles to spine and marbled boards. New endpapers. With 20 high quality colour printed plates. 17 x 13.5 cms. Chr.) dargestellt.

President-elect Buchanan advises ìto let New York politicks alone for the present as I have resolved to do. It is a perfect chaos ÿ I like Wood very much & always have liked him. He is a Napoleon of a fellow.î Fellow Democrat Fernando Wood was Mayor of New York City

Lancaster, Pennsylvania: , December 16, 1856 Autograph Letter Signed ìJames Buchananî as President-elect, 2p, 6.5î x 8î, front & verso. On gilt-edged laid paper. The recipientís name has been erased from page two with slight thinning of paper on first page. Marked ìPrivateî by Buchanan. Wheatland, December 16, 1856. Fine condition. Wheatland was James Buchananís home in Lancaster County, outside of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In the November 4, 1856, presidential election, Democrat Buchanan had handedly defeated the Republican partyís first presidential candidate, John C. Frÿmont, and the American (Know-Nothing) party nominee, former President Millard Fillmore. In full, ìI have recd yours of the 13th at the moment of leaving for Philadelphia. I have only time to advise you to let New York politicks [sic] alone for the present as I have resolved to do. It is a perfect chaos, - a whirpool [sic] of contending elements, - which nobody either in or out of the State understand at the present moment. Donít interfere in them now, if you desire to have influence on them hereafter. People come to me almost every day from New York. I like Wood very much & always have liked him. He is a Napoleon of a fellow. No man has ever been more abused than him; but he is abundantly able to take care of himself. I speak of the present momentwillshall not say that I shall will not interfere. He is a master spirit. Ever yr friend in haste.î The ìNew York Daily Timesî had editorialized on December 11, 1856, in part, ìThe necessity of a greater concentration of power in the City Government, is becoming generally recognized and acknowledged. The only difficulty in agreeing upon some mode of bringing this about grows out of the hostility or distrust which exists in many quarters with regard to Mayor Woodÿî Also on November 4, 1856, New York Democrat Fernando Wood had been reelected Mayor of New York City. Jerome Mushkat writes in ìFernando Wood: A Political Biographyî (Kent, Ohio: Kent State University Press, 1990), ìAs soon as it became apparent that he had won, Wood brashly wrote Buchanan, ëMy own election I know will be gratifying to you Ã? Fortunately, my own relations with Mr. B [ìNew York Heraldî owner, publisher, and editor James Gordon Bennett who had supported Buchananís election] & his really kind feelings towards you personally places matters in good shape.í Yet according to Wood, a complication existed. Bennett was worried that Woodís enemies might ëobtain your confidence & get control [sic] of the patronage of this city.í But Wood insidiously ended that he could handle Bennett. ëI have assured him that there can be no probability of this,í since ëyou would not selectí those ëwho have taken action at the last election with the small minority of the party which opposed me.í Buchanan was not a political innocent and held Wood at armís length until he took his own soundings. ëIn regard to the N.Y. appointments I can say nothing, but that I shall hear all sides & hope for the best,í he repliedÃ?î

A Tennessean writes to a Mississippi law firm that he sold a Negro woman who ìwas sound at the time we made the Saleî but now needs a lawyer because she died and as for the Negro man, ìwe gave no guarantee that he was a carpenter, we only gave a guarantee for soundnessÿî

Nashville, Tennessee: , April 17, 1856 Autograph Letter Signed ìR.J. Foster,î 2p, 8î x 10î, front & verso. Nashville, Tennessee, April 17, 1856. With original 3¢ George Washington embossed stamped envelope, 5.5î x 3.25î. Clear blue ìNashville Tenn. Apr 18î postmark. Addressed by Foster to ìMess Miller & Kilpatrick / Attorneys at Law / Pontotoc, Miss.î Docketed at left. Fine condition. Hugh R. Miller and William H. Kilpatrick became law partners in Pontotoc, Mississippi, in 1853. Miller had been a Mississippi State Representative (1841-1843) and Circuit Judge (1845-1853). In the Civil War, he commanded the Pontotoc Minute Men (Company G, 2nd Mississippi Infantry Regiment) from January 1861 until April 1862 and the 42nd Mississippi Infantry Regiment from May 1862 until July 3, 1863, when he was mortally wounded during the Battle of Gettysburg in Pickettís Charge. Kilpatrick served as Captain, 9th Mississippi Infantry (ìCorinth Riflesî) and, promoted to Major, commanded the 5th Battalion of the Army of Mobile in 1862. In part, ìIn relation to the negro woman we sold Mr Lowry I fear I will not be enabled to have deposition taken and forwared [sic] to your court in time for your June term, from the fact that my Partner Mr J.W. Hitchings who purchased the woman is at this time in Texas and as the parties he purchased of is not known to me ÿ We had the woman in hand about four months before we sold her to Lowry and during that time, she never complained of being sick one moment, and I have no doubt but we will be enabled to prove the woman to be sound. If you know a Lawyer at Crawfordsville I wish you to get him to investigate the soundness of the woman from the time we sold her to Lowry up to the time of her death, for I am fully satisfied that she was sound at the time we made the Sale ÿ In relation to the negro man we only said to Lowry that he had worked at the carpentry trade, he had the man examined by a carpenter in this Town who said to him from what the man said him self he was of the opinion that he could do good work, but in our Bill of Sale to Lowry, we gave no guarantee that he was a carpenter we only gave a guarantee for soundness and tittle to the negroesÿî
