LOS MILLONES DE LA MESILLA, Y SUS MISTERIOS...[cover title]

Acapulco, 1855. 29pp. 12mo. Gathered signatured, stitched, as issued. Slight corner wear, cover leaf starting to separate at foot. Small, dark area of staining on front cover, scattered light foxing throughout. About very good. A very rare Mexican imprint, publishing a protest against the "avaricia insaciable" of Santa Anna and other Mexican government officials involved in the Gadsden Purchase of 1854 (known in Mexico as La Venta de la Mesilla), in which the United States acquired what is now the southern portions of Arizona and New Mexico. The anonymous author condemns the corruption of the government, and writes, "La palabra millones produce gran efecto de un avaro. ¡¡¡Millones!!! This edition was reprinted from the first published in Morelia, of which only two copies are known. Of the present Acapulco imprint, only one other copy has been located, at the Instituto Mora in Mexico City.

Quittung mit eigenh. U. ("Elisabeth"). Wien, 17. XI. 1855.

1855. ½ S. Folio.

Ticknor and Fields, Boston,, 1855.. Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles gilt to spine, sides panelled in blind, yellow coated endpapers. Housed in a cloth chemise and slipcase. Publisher's adverts at the rear dated November 1855. Rubbing to extremities, small pin perforation to front free endpaper, sound, smart and internally clean, an excellent copy. First US edition, first printing, a lovely copy in the original cloth, of Longfellow's epic poem, a Native American love story, and one of the most enduring productions of American Romanticism. The book went through five printings in the first year, but this copy has all the requisite textual errors to denote the first printing: p.27, line 9 "heron"; pg.32, line 11 "In the Moon"; pg.39, line 11 and pg.268, lines 11 and 14, "Wahonomin", not "wahonourn"; pg.96, "Dove" instead of "Dived"; pg.278 "Cooed the Omemee".         THE MANIFESTO, WHICH THE GENERAL OF BRIGADE, DON JOSE FIGUEROA, COMMANDANT-GENERAL AND POLITICAL CHIEF OF U. CALIFORNIA, MAKES TO THE MEXICAN REPUBLIC, IN REGARD TO HIS CONDUCT AND THAT OF THE SNRS. D. JOSE MARIA DE HIJARS AND D. JOSE MARIA PADRES, AS DIRECTORS OF COLONIZATION IN 1833 AND 1834

San Francisco: Herald Office, 1855. 104,[1]pp. Half title. Contemporary sheep, gilt ruled, title gilt lettered on front board. Edges and corners slightly worn, spine faded. Bookplate on front pastedown. Occasional light foxing, otherwise internally clean. A very good copy. The scarce first English language edition of Figueroa's defense of his conduct in a California colonization plan, following the extremely rare first edition of 1835, which was the first book-length imprint from Agustin Zamorano's pioneer California press. Hijar and Padres planned a project of colonizing California in the early 1830s, which brought to California many families who played a prominent role in the development of the province. The Mexican government secularized the missions in 1833, and the expectation was that the families would take possession of the mission lands. Hijar and Padres themselves expected to be given governmental positions of importance. Orders from Mexico countermanded the promises, and Figueroa, governor of California, refused to hand over the lands, for which he was criticized. This edition is quite rare, and Howes affords it a "c" rating. COWAN, p.210. GRAFF 1320. GREENWOOD 562. HOWES F122, "c." STREETER SALE 2784. ZAMORANO 80, 37 (note).

        Retour de Crimée.

Martinet Paris c 1855 - Landscape folio. Title printed in gilt with gilt border surrounding a hand-coloured lithograph, 16 hand-coloured tinted lithographs including title, with captions and tissue guards. Publisher's cloth, stamped in blind and gilt; covers slightly rubbed at extremities. First edition of this exceptionally rare humorous series of hand-coloured lithographs depicting children in the roles of returning French soldiers from the Crimean War. The child-soldiers engage in drinking, smoking and fighting, as well as touching scenes of reunion with sweethearts, family and wartime comrades. Of great rarity: we could not trace any copy at auction in the last 35 years and we could locate only two examples in public institutions worldwide (Baltimore, USA and BNF). Lièvre (1829-86), known for his lithographs of children engaging in adult behaviour, produced a companion volume to Retour de Crimée, entitled En Crimée, as well as volumes on art and furniture. An artist with many talents, Lièvre was also a painter and later developped a successful career as a furniture designer and wide-ranging ornamentist. BNF, Département des Estampes, Inventaire du Fonds Français après 1800, XIV, p. 326-7, #4. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

- Leicht fleckig.

Freight Engine. New York & Erie R.R. An original drawing

Susquehanna Depot, 1855. Pencil, pen and ink. Signed in ink: "Theodore Krausch. Susquehana [sic] Depot. N.Y. and Erie Railroad. October 13, 1855." A very handsome drawing of a locomotive by a prominent inventor and engineerTheodore Krausch, dates unknown, was employed by what was then known as the New York and Erie Railroad at Susquehanna Depot where railway cars and locomotives were designed, built and repaired. The town in northeastern Pennsylvania, just below the New York border and Binghamton, came into existence with the coming of the railroad. Krausch, who obtained several patents during his life, (one for innovations in railway chair design), also received a Silver Medal from the American Institute of the City of New York for a drawing of a locomotive, no doubt similar to this one.During the 1850's, when railway lines and companies were spreading out across the country, each railroad customized its engines and cars to its specific needs. There was a large degree of standardization, and this Krausch drawing is a perfect rendition of the 4-4-0 wheel arrangement and overall design that was used almost universally in 19th century America.

Bradbury & Evans. London. 1855 - 1856. - Nature-printed color plate, sheet 21 3/4 x 14 1/2 inches. Light foxng to edges, faint scattered foxing; very good, bright condition. This beautiful folio-sized antique botanical print is Plate XIII from "The Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland ., Nature-Printed by Henry Bradbury" published in 1855-1856 "one of the finest pieces of nature-printing ever achieved. The plates were produced 'by passing the plant, under pressure, between a plate of soft lead from which an electrotype could be made' (Blunt). As a result the plates record the smallest details of flowers and the finest venations of leaves. Bradbury, whose father was of the publishing house Bradbury & Evans, studied at the Imperial Printing Office in Vienna." (de Belder catalogue #237). The mania for ferns (or "pteridomania") was one of several plant fixations of the Victorians, fueled by discoveries from abroad and a rapidly expanding middle class interested in plants and gardening; ferns were ideal indoor plants for the Victorian home and their graceful forms were much used in decorative art.
