Carawane nach Mecca. Vienna, Matthias Trentsensky (printed by E. Sieger), [ca. 1855].

1855. Oblong folio (250 x 400 mm). With 19 (of 24) numbered leaves containing about 135 lithographic pen-drawings of people, animals, equipment & gear and goods, from a caravan travelling to Mecca, each drawing including a base so that one can cut them out, paste them on card stock, stand them up and arrange them in three-dimensional scenes. Lacking leaves 1-5.ll. 6-24 (of 24). Loose leaves in a later paper folder. All but the first five leaves of a very rare lithographic print series issued in parts. Most copies were probably cut up (and perhaps coloured) by children and destroyed in play. The human figures to be cut out include Turkish, Arabic, African and Near Eastern men and women (black and white) in Islamic clothing, including both masters and servants, some of the men with a variety of firearms, spears, daggers, pipes (straight pipes and hookah water-pipes), prayer rugs, and other gear and goods, and servants setting up a tent. There are also camels (both single-humped dromedaries and two-humped Bactrian camels), horses and donkeys, often with their gear for riding or for carrying loads. The wild animals include wolves, a hyena and an ostrich. Inanimate objects include containers for water, an incense burner, baskets, chests, barrels, camel saddles and much more. The series must have provided many children and adults with their first notion of Islamic society and culture and is rich in authentic details, such as a dromedary with its left front leg bent up and tied around the knee. Kleine Welt des Bilderbogens dates the series ca. 1855, just after Sir Richard Burton's famous successful visit to Mecca disguised as an Islamic Afghan in 1853 (he was one of the few Europeans who had ever visited Mecca and lived to tell of it). The complete series of 24 leaves comprised four groups of leaves, each leaf with the title, relevant subtitle and imprint (without date) at the foot: 1-6: Die Ueberbringung des heiligen Teppich. 7-13: Die Reise durch die Wüste. 14-16: Das Lager in der Wüste. 17-24: Die Gefahren der Wüste. The artist is not named. The drawings are printed on unwatermarked wove paper. Since the paper is fairly thin and the drawn bases have no folding tabs, the publisher probably intended the cut-outs to be pasted onto card stock with a folding tab at the foot of the base so that they could stand with no other support. - With an occasional pencil mark. Lacking leaves 1-5 (all but the last leaf of the first group), but otherwise in good condition (remarkable good considering the wear and tear that most such items see) and with the other three groups complete. The whole is slightly browned and the edges somewhat tattered (1 small tear slightly affects one camel and another very slightly affects one drawn base). Richly detailed lithographic drawings for about 135 paper cut-outs for a Caravan to Mecca. Kleine Welt des Bilderbogens: der Wiener Verlag Trentsensky (1977), 111. Katharina Siefert, ed., Paläste, Panzer, Pop-up-Bücher: Papierwelten in 3D (2009), with a chapter, "Die Carawane nach Mecca", pp. 31-38. Not in KVK; WorldCat.

Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Meccah. London, Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1855-1856.

1855. 3 volumes, 8vo. XVI, 388 pp. (2), IV, 426 pp. XII, 448 pp. Half-title in vol. 3, without publisher's ads. 4 maps & plans (3 folding), 5 colour lithographed plates, 8 tinted lithographed plates. Later half morocco over marbled paper covered boards, bound by Zaehnsdorf, spine with raised bands in six compartments, lettered in the second and fourth, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. First edition of Burton's classic account of his journey across the Arabian peninsula. In the fall of 1852, Burton first proposed to the Royal Geographical Society an expedition to central Arabia with the intent on visiting the holy cities. His request was denied by the RGS and the East India Company as being too dangerous for a westerner, though he was funded to study Arabic in Egypt. Upon arrival there, in April 1853, disguised as a Pashtun and travelling under the pseudonym Mirza Abdullah, Burton made the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. "The actual pilgrimage began with a journey on camel-back from Cairo to Suez. Then followed twelve days in a pilgrim ship on the Red Sea from Suez to Yambu, the port of El-Medinah. So far the only risk was from detection by his companions. Now came the dangers of the inland road, infested by Bedawin robbers. The journey from Yambu to El-Medinah, thence to Meccah, and finally to the sea again at Jeddah, occupied altogether from 17 July to 23 Sept., including some days spent in rest, and many more in devotional exercises. From Jeddah, Burton returned to Egypt in a British steamer, intending to start afresh for the interior of Arabia via Muwaylah. But this second project was frustrated by ill-health, which kept him in Egypt until his period of furlough was exhausted. The manuscript ... was sent home from India, and seen through the press by a friend in England. It is deservedly the most popular of Burton's books ... as a story of bold adventure, and as lifting a veil from the unknown, its interest will never fade" (DNB). Indeed, the work would be described by T.E. Lawrence as "a most remarkable work of the highest value." Abbey, Travel 368. Penzer, pp. 43-50. Macro, 640. Howgego IV, B95.

Eglises, places publiques, Rues, Monumens. Collection des gravures. [Verso: Album-Souvenir]. [Vienna, c. 1855].

1855. Small oblong 8vo (145 x 105 mm). 24 views engraved in steel (87:50 mm each) laid down on decorated backing paper. Original coloured portfolio. Both series of these charming views, probably printed by A. Payne, all mounted on the original backing paper and stored within the perfectly preserved original moirée portfolio printed in blue and gold. The unnumbered engravings, all with captions below, are individually laid down on toned slips of paper with ornamental and figural decoration (each with slight design variations) and bear no reference to printer, artist, or publisher. Apart from the conventional sights of Vienna, the present series features views of the Südbahnhof, the Polytechnical Institute, the Neue Markt and Casino, the Paradiesgarten, the Villa Metternich, the Ferdinandsbrücke with Jägerzeile, and the inn "Zum goldenem Lamm", all perfect as issued; the view of Lobkowitzplatz alone is somewhat shaded with dust towards the edges. Nebehay/Wagner follow the copy of the Vienna City Library in dividing the whole into two series of twelve views each (all present here). No further copy could be traced through library or collection catalogues; merely Gilhofer offered 12 views of the present series in its 1983 centenary catalogue (100 Jahre Gilhofer: Österreich, Geographie, Topographie und Geschichte in illustrierten Werken, no. 142 [with full-page illustration]: "Von großer Seltenheit".) Nebehay/Wagner III, 791. Not in Mayer, Eckl, etc.

The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia. London, Day & Son (vol. 3: New York, D. Appleton & Co.), 1855-1856.

1855. 6 vols. bound as 3. Large 8vo (300 x 220 mm). With 250 numbered plates (image size 120 x 170 to 150 x 220 mm), including a tinted lithographed portrait of the artist, 6 tinted lithographed title-pages, 2 stone-engraved maps and 239 tinted and double-tinted lithographed and 2 chromolithographed views. Contemporary, richly gold-tooled reddish-brown morocco, side-stitched and oversewn, then sewn on 5 recessed cords, with a hollow back, 5 false bands on the spine, gold-tooled turn-ins, combed and curled marbled endpapers, headbands in red and yellow, gilt and gauffered edges. With thin paper guard leaves facing each plate. Second edition, with reduced illustrations but with more of them double-tinted or chromolithographed, of one of the most splendid and historically important visual records of the Middle East, after drawings by David Roberts (1796-1864) from the sketches he made from life during his travels through what is now Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Lebanon in 1838 and 1839. In Egypt he ventured up the Nile as far as the Nubian temples at Abu Simbel, near the present border with Sudan and travelled by camel through the Sinai to the extraordinary carved-rock buildings of Petra. These had been unknown to Europeans until Burckhardt discovered them in 1812 and 1813, so Roberts's views are among the earliest and are in many ways better than the few predecessors. In Lebanon he ventured as far as Baalbek, which had seen few European visitors before Egypt annexed it in 1832. Other sites he visited and drew include Cairo, Suez, Gaza, Jerusalem and Beirut. He was one of the first Europeans allowed to make drawings of the interior of mosques, so even in well-known cities these too opened a new world to European eyes. His views also provide a very detailed visual record of many sites that were afterward destroyed or disturbed. He drew them during the infancy of photography, before it reached the Middle East and long before it reached maturity there. His views of the modern cities also preserve records of both their architecture and their daily life and he shows spectacular landscapes in the mountains, around the Dead Sea and along the Nile and the Jordan. Roberts, born to a poor (Welsh?) family in Edinburgh, was apprenticed as a house painter, moved to London and worked his way up to paint sets for the Drury Lane Theatre and others. Thanks to patrons who appreciated his talents and hard work he was able to make the expensive and dangerous voyage through the Middle East. George Croly (in volumes 1-3) and William Brockedon (in volumes 4-6) provided explanatory and historical notes on the sites shown in Roberts's views. - Roberts's views were originally published in two separate works, issued in parts in the years 1842 to 1849 and often found together. One centred on the Holy Land, though also including views in other parts of the Middle East, while the other was devoted to Egypt and Nubia. The views in the former were made with only a single tint block and even the latter used fewer tint blocks than the present second edition and only one chromolithograph. The present edition, with sometimes very intricate double tints and two chromolithographs (with black and three tint blocks) is a masterpiece of tinted lithography. Since the lithographers used photographic reductions of the lithographic views of the first edition as an aid to their work, the book also pioneered the use of photography in graphic reproduction. The lithographed title-pages are dated 1855 except for those of vol. 3 (from the simultaneous New York issue, undated) and 6 (1856) but volumes 2-6 include plates dated 1856. The dates of the plates in all six volumes range from 16 April 1855 to 15 December 1856. - The title-page of volume 3 was intended for the simultaneous New York issue, but appears to have always been part of the present copy. In very good condition, with occasional light foxing, mostly on the backs of the plates, and with a faint marginal water stain in the lower outside corner of many plates in volumes 3 and 4, not approaching the printed image. The inside front hinge of the second volume as bound has separated from the book block and the bindings show some wear at the hinges and extremities, but they are otherwise also very good. 250 mostly tinted and double-tinted lithographs providing stunning early views of the Middle East, including Petra, Abu Simbel and the interiors of several mosques. Abbey, Travel 388 (lacking vols. 5-6). Blackmer 1432 (note). Gay 25. Hiler 205. Cf. Hamilton, Europe and the Arab world 66 (1842-49 ed.); Lipperheide, Lc 12 & Ma 27 (1842-49 ed.); Tooley 401f. Autograph letter signed. N. p. o. d.

1855. 8vo. 3¼ pp. on double leaf. - Slightly browned and spotty; small collection stamp on p. 1.

Autograph letter signed ("L. Feuerbach"). Bruckberg, 18. XII. 1855.

1855. 8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium with address to "Herrn / Friedrich Kapp / d[urch] E[inschluß]". On green "Bath" stationery. Unpublished letter to his friend, the just-naturalised American lawyer, writer, abolitionist, and politician Friedrich Kapp (1824-84) in New York, asking him for advice in financial and family matters, inquiring after Socialist friends, discussing a publication on slavery which Kapp had sent him and remarking on the character of the United States: "What contradictions are not in this America! What could they be with our striving and substance, and what could we be with their principle!" - In full: "Lieber Kapp. Lebwohl!" - Feuerbach had met the student Kapp in Heidelberg in 1843. He had renewed his relationship with his old friend only in May after Kapp had sent him several of his recently-published works.

Das allgemeine linguistische Alphabet. Berlin, Hertz, 1855.

1855. Large 4to. (4), 64 pp., partly printed in red and black. Modern brown half cloth. First edition. - Rare work by the Egyptologist and linguist Carl R. Lepsius (1810-84), leader of the 1842/45 Prussian expedition to Egypt. In this treatise, he presented what must be regarded as one of the earliest attempts at a standardised phonetic alphabet for all languages - a function today fulfilled by the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which is still based primarily on the Latin alphabet. Among the many alphabetical systems which Lepsius takes into account are also Egyptian hieroglyphs as well as Hebrew, Arabic, Farsi, Sanscrit, Bengali, Armenian, Malay, Chinese, etc. - Somewhat browned and brownstained throughout with a noticeable waterstain. Some edge flaws. Title page shows library stamp of the Gymnasium of Venray, Netherlands. Kayser XIV, 24.

(Roger Mayer in DHS).

1 vol. 8vo. 4 folding plates (2 coloured maps).         Biographical Memoir of John Montagu

Harrison, London 1855 - Thick octavo, portrait frontispiece; in original blind-stamped cloth. Fascinating work on colonial affairs, of particular note for the governorship of Tasmania. Montagu, married to Arthur's neice, was an efficient reformer of the civil service, but was perceived by Sir John Franklin as one of the Arthur's 'clique', which Franklin was keen to break. Personal differences between Montagu and Franklin escalated in the wake of conflicting views on transportation and a charge (later quashed) that Montagu had been behind an article besmirching Franklin. Turnbull (an anti-transportationist, surgeon & Presbyterian Minister), along with Sir John Pedder attempted mediation but to no avail. With an appealing blind stamp of the Hobart bookseller Walch. This is the copy of Adam Turnbull who served with Montagu in his time as Colonial Secretary under Governors Arthur and Sir John Franklin. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Exhibition of Water-colour Drawings and Pictures by Amateur Artists,

London: A. and G. A. Spottiswoode,, 1855. and art contributions in aid of the fund for the relief of the widows and orphans of British officers engaged in the war with Russia. Gallery, 121. Pall Mall, opposite the opera colonnade. Square octavo, 66 pp. Original bright blue morocco-grain cloth by Westleys & Co (with their ticket), gilt lettered on front cover, both covers with gilt panelling enclosing large ornamental corner-pieces and central royal arms, all edges gilt, pale yellow coated endpapers. List of royal donors printed in gold. A little rubbed at extremities. An exceptional copy. First and only edition; rare: Copac cites only the copy at the V&A amongst British and Irish institutional libraries, OCLC adds one copy worldwide (at Yale), although we have traced a copy in the Royal Collection. The handsomely produced catalogue of the exhibition held at Ernest Gambart's French Gallery at 121 Pall Mall, listing 754 works of art donated to the fund, including pieces by five of Queen Victoria's children. As stated on the title page, admission was one shilling, the price of the catalogue sixpence, and the show was open from ten in the morning until six in the evening. Jeremy Maas gives an interesting account of the exhibition in his biography of Gambart: "A committee of London society ladies and gentlemen, under the patronage of the Queen's aged aunt, the Duchess of Gloucester, had decided to make a contribution to the Patriotic Fund by putting on an exhibition of paintings, sketches and drawings by amateurs and artists, the entire proceeds of which were destined for the widows and children of officers who had fallen in the war in the Crimea. The only gallery suitable in any way for this laudable enterprise, and the only person deemed capable of doing it justice, were the French Gallery in Pall Mall and the enterprising Mr Gambart. The exhibition was fixed for April, after the closing of his normal Winter Exhibition. It all looked very well, but something to fire the imagination was needed. Accordingly, the Queen graciously premitted drawings by the Princess Royal, the Prince of Wales, Prince Alfred and the Princesses Alice and Helena to be shown. On the eve of the opening the water-colour by the fifteen-year-old Princess Royal arrived; it was entitled, 'A woman looking for her husband among the dead and wounded after the Battle of Inkerman' [entitled 'The Battle Field' on p. 5 of the catalogue]. Asked about the price, the Princess replied, 'Would a guinea be too much?' Accustomed to asking high prices for anything that passed through his hands, Gambart felt that this was quite out of the question. While the committee was trying to hit upon a tactful way of asking the Princess to raise the price, Gambart seized his chance. Taking a large piece of paper, he wrote at the top: 'Water-colour by the Princess Royal for sale to the last and highest bidder', and put himself down for 75 guineas. Before long appeared a bid of 100 guineas.Gambart promptly put himself down again for 125 guineas... At the end of the exhibition the water-colour stood at 450 guineas... Perhaps Gambart was relieved to have been able to demonstrate his patriotism without paying a heavy price; nevertheless, he packed the gallery daily with eager and curious crowds. Eventually he had the Princess Royal's water-colour lithographed and opened a subscription list at a guinea a print; the money earned from the print - about £1,200 - was added to the £13,000 made through the exhibition by fees at the door and the sale of works" (Gambart: Prince of the Victorian Art World, 1975, pp. 70-71).

The buttertflies of Great Britain with their transformations, delineated and described.

London Orr 1855 - Quarto, xl, 140 pp.,additional hand-coloured lithograph pictorial title, 19 hand-coloured lithographs, 2 monochrome plates, small ink splash to foot of additional title, contemporary brown morocco gilt extra, covers with fancy gilt borders, all edges gilt, 1917-dated gift inscription to front paste-down, a very attractive example. An abridged reduced format version of the 1841 British butterflies and their transformations with new plates and revised text. Dunbar notes that some copies are poorly coloured, however the present example has fine bright colouring. Westwood, a distinguished entomologist and member of the Linnean Society, collaborated in writing the text to accompany the charming beautiful painings by Humphreys. Each print depicts several species artistically composed among the flowering caterpillar food plants, and in many instances the caterpillar and chrysalis are shown. Some of the grander European species are also shown. Dunbar, British butterflies, page 53. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Leaves of Grass

Brooklyn, NY 1855 - A Very Good copy, rare in the original cloth. This copy has been recased, reversing old repairs and closing some tears to the cloth near the spine that would otherwise have gotten worse. Small blank margin of the frontis portrait chipped and renewed. The title page is frayed at the edges and with some large tears, which have all now been professionally secured. Internal contents show some smudges and wear, but the book is complete and in its original binding. BAL state A binding, with extra gilt and all page edges gilt, state A of the frontis portrait, on thick card-stock, state B of the copyright notice, printing the notice in two lines, and state B of page iv with "and" spelled correctly. Also, with the first state of leaf 49 reading "And the night is for you and me and all." (Gary Schmidgall: "1855: A Stop-Press Revision") Housed in a custom slipcase with chemise. Perhaps the most important collection of poetry in American Literature. Although "Leaves of Grass" was first greeted with derision and even shock - Boston's district attorney attempted to have some of the poems suppressed as obscene and Whitman was fired from his job - it eventually claimed its rightful place in the American canon. Whitman wrote the collection after he was inspired by Emerson and the Transcendentalist movement, and the poems in Leaves of Grass are noted for their sensualist focus on nature and the human form. They include some of Whitman's most famous works, including "Song of Myself" and "I Sing of the Body Electric." Despite the collection's fame and success, Whitman re-wrote and edited the collection many times, with the final edition containing over 400 poems. Whitman himself helped pay for the printing of the first edition, the run of which contained only 800 copies, most of which were unbound."Always the champion of the common man, Whitman is both the poet and the prophet of democracy. The whole of Leaves of Grass is imbued with the spirit of brotherhood and a pride in the democracy of the young American nation. In a sense, it is America's second Declaration of Independence: that of 1776 was political, this of 1855 intellectual." (Printing and the Mind of Man)Unsurprisingly, the book has had numerous admirers. Harold Bloom has called the book the "secular scripture of the United States", and Ezra Pound referred to Whitman as "America's Poet." "The whole body of these Poems-spiritually considered-is alive with power, throbbing and beating behind and between the lines. There is more here than mere oddity, and barbaric indifference to elegant forms of speech; there is a living soul-no matter whether its owner drove an omnibus once, or stands on State street and chaffers greedily every day for gold-and that soul insists on giving itself to its fellows, even if it has to rend the most sacred rules of speech to achieve its larger liberty? It is the texture of the stuff that tells, because it is that which is going to endure." (Contemporary Review of 1860 edition, Boston Banner of Light). Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

La Bouquetière du Château d'eau. Manuscrit autographe.

NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

22,3 × 19,9 cm. Osignerad. Av Philibert Humbla daterat till c. 1855. Paret gifte sig 1858. Proveniens: Från konstnärens fader Nils Fredrik Zoll (f. 1789) och hans hustru Catarina Christina Knutsson (f. 1799) i arv till bankdirektör Josef Elmlund (1880-1969), Ängelholm, sedan vidare i arv inom familjen till 2009. Crafoord auktioner 25 april 2009, nr 54. Litteratur: Philbert Humbla, Kilian Zoll (1932), s. 182, 251, nr 14. Avbildad s. 70.

Vienna, Matthias Trentsensky (printed by E. Sieger), [ca. 1855]. - Oblong folio (250 x 400 mm).
