Plan of Boston comprising a part of Charlestown and Cambridge

Boston: "George G. Smith ... Also by Ide and Dutton", 1855. Engraved folding pocket map, period hand-colouring in outline. Inset maps of South Boston and East Boston. Street index along the left margin. Folds into publisher's blindstamped cloth covers, title stamped in gilt on the upper cover, Ide & Dutton advertisement on the front pastedown. A noted mid-19th century map of Boston: among the earliest to show the proposed filling of Back Bay. This decorative map of Boston shows the city divided into wards and fire districts, with the city's streets and wharves named. The map further identifies many of the public buildings, schools and churches located in the city. The most notable feature on this map, however, is its depiction of the proposed filling of Back Bay. "The tide mills had not been successful and, cut off by the Mill Dam and with the flow of water further impeded by the railroad embankments, the Back Bay, into which all the sewers from surrounding areas drained, had become a stinking cesspool. By the early 1850s it was determined that the only solution was to fill the bay, and in 1854 the state and the Boston Water Power Company, the two major owners of the Back Bay flats, made an agreement for filling them. This agreement included the street grid plan shown on the 1855 map. This street grid had been laid out without regard for the railroad tracks, and eventually only the streets east of Dartmouth, which is just west of the point where the tracks crossed, were constructed..." (Mapping Boston, plate 39, page 205). The filling of Back Bay would begin in 1857 and take nearly twenty-five years to complete. This copy an unusual variant, with a large reservoir appearing just below the Mill Dam, with the explanation "Plan of improvement proposed by Hon. David Sears." This reservoir was removed in subsequent issues of the map, suggesting this to be an early state. Mapping of Boston , p. 205.

Fine condition. In full, ""I hope you remember enough to make you not feel surprized at my writing to you to ask you a question which I believe you can answer better than any one else to whom I have ready access, except perhaps Mr. Story whose present address I don't know. My question is best asked in the words of a friend of mine who has asked me to make the enquiry; so I enclose a piece of her note which will explain what we want to know, I need not say that we shall consider your answer as given in confidence, and entrusted to our honour: and I should be very much obliged to you if you would ascertain Mr. Story's opinion on the subject, if you have no knowledge yourself. I would not have troubled you if I could have written to Mr. Story. I hope you have good accounts from Mrs. Shaw, and Anna - We have heard nothing of them since we saw them in Plymouth Grove; and I don’t like this snipping short of a happy pleasant little bit of friendship - if you are so kind as to write will you tell me something about them! We remain here till the 127th of Septr when we go to Glasgow for the British Association. After that date the safest address because the most permanent is Plymouth Grove Massachusetts.         Map Showing the Steam Communications and Overland Routes between England, India, China & Australia

London: W.H. Allen & Co., [c. 1855]. Map dimensions 69 x 126.5 cm, overall 72 x 131 cm. Folding map with original outline colour demarcating coastlines, border and the lines of communication between Britain, South Africa and the British colonies in Asia, Australia and New Zealand, twin inset maps illustrating, firstly, the routes between the Mediterranean, Black Sea and the Persian Gulf and, secondly, the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, dissected into 30 sections and mounted on linen, folds between original green cloth boards, gilt lettered to the upper cover, publisher's advertisements to the inner cover and the folded end section. Chips to the corners of two panels, slight creasing elsewhere, a little surface soiling, small nick to the cloth spine, a decent example overall. Ownership inscription of Seymour A. Slane to one of the folded end sections, underneath which in the same hand the name of a company - the Telegraph Construction & Maintenance Co. - and on another panel of the verso a further pencilled inscription by him dated 1869. There are numerous annotations across the map, in pencil marking out additional shipping routes and in red ink telegraph lines (those already built and those prospective), with his manuscript additions to the explanatory key. The Telegraph Construction & Maintenance Co. was founded in 1864 and was contracted to manufacture and lay the cable for the first transatlantic telegraph line. Though unsuccessful in 1865, they succeeded a year later with the cable laid by the S.S. Great Eastern. The company went on to lay numerous other telegraph lines between Britain and the rest of the world in the succeeding decades, often in collaboration with local sister companies. These included the first line between Bombay, Aden and Suez in 1869 and 1870, the prospective construction of which is shown here, along with that of the Australia and New Zealand (completed 1876). A unique copy of an uncommon map, with just the British Library copy on Copac and two copies in Australia on Worldcat.

REPORTS OF EXPLORATIONS AND SURVEYS to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific Railroad Survey

Washington; 1855-1861: Government Printing Office. First Edition. Hard Cover. Quarto, 12 volumes in 13, uniform bindings of contemporary 3/4 brown leather over marbled boards; marbled end papers and marbled edges. A COMPLETE COPY, having all the maps, charts, color and black and white illustrations, which are called for by Wagner-Camp. All plates and maps are very good to fine. These surveys were the government's first attempt to examine the vast compendium of vital information which detail the topographical, botanical, zoological, and the natural history aspects of a largely unknown West. This monumental work contains over 650 striking color (some hand-colored) and black and white illustrations, charts and maps. An excellent set, internally clean, in very good contemporary bindings, volume 12-1 expertly rebacked, with original spine laid down; Muhlenberg Library stamp on some page edges, a few erased, neat owner name on FEP's; pockets unobtrusively removed from rear end papers, volume VIII with small hole in rear end paper; some plates from another copy, more in volume XII-I; all volumes are the Senate issue, except for XII-I, which is the House issue. Most title pages with location numbers in lower right. Altogether, a handsome set, with all plates very good to fine, and quite scarce as such. Armorial bookplate. Passenger railroad service first appeared in the United States in the 1830's. Plans to build a transcontinental railroad quickly emerged, but controversy delayed movement for about 20 years. Then in 1853, Congress authorized Jefferson Davis, Secretary of War to begin "explorations and ascertain the most practical and economic route for a railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean." Four routes were then designated, one along the 47th parallel (along the Missouri River and over the northern Rockies), a second along the 38th parallel (through middle America to the Salt Lake Basin, then West, a third route along the 35th parallel (crossing Texas, New Mexico and Arizona into southern California), and a fourth along the 32nd parallel (across central Texas, along the Gila River to Fort Yuma and San Diego. Another survey was ordered linking southern California and the Pacific Northwest. A more than adequate budget was provided for a fairly tight schedule; these explorations were conducted in 1853-54. The expedition parties were staffed with the nations most competent artists, cartographers, botanists, geologists, naturalists and other specialists and the very best equipment was purchased. The first of the above quarto volumes appeared in 1855 and the final volume in 1861. "Despite their flaws, these volumes contain a monumental collection of scientific information, geographical, zoological, botanical, geological.......Upon first examination, the volumes seem forbiddingly disorganized; reports clearly were printed as they were received.....However, these faults are amply compensated by the richness of the material within." Wagner-Camp 261.

        The Beauties of the Bosphorus

London: George Virtue, [1855]. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. William H. Bartlett. With 88 [including title page and vignette and map] steel engravings within a marbled calf leather binding with gilt tooling this is a beautifully presented book. The accomplished engravings are varied, including scenery, buildings, people and activities as well as a map. Whilst Miss Pardoe's text may be somewhat dry by today's standards, Bartlett's [RA, 1809-1854] engravings stand the test of time and are wonderful. First published in 1838, this edition from [1855] has an appendix written to take account of scenary that had "gained notoriety in connection with" the ongoing Crimean War. There are an additional 8 steel engravings by Bartlett, the last ones he completed prior to his death in 1854. The high quality engravings take in a fountain at Galata, a cooling room in a Hammam, a public Khan and best of all a coffee kiosque! Small original bookbinder's stamp on ffep [R.R. Bellamy, Burton on Trent]. 172pp. 28x22 cm. Corners worn, edges rubbed and some scuffing to backstrip. Occasional brown spotting throughout.

A fine copy of this attractive map of Iowa from the early years of its settlement, this second edition shows the rapid development within the state and is the first edition to include Sioux City and many proposed railroad routes. This large and colourful map of Iowa shows the state divided into numerous counties, all within nine land districts, with the sites of the land offices identified in each. Issued to promote settlement in the state, the map includes an advertisement in the upper left corner for Henn, Williams and Co.: "dealers in land, land warrants & exchange ... special attention given to Location of Land, the sale and loan of Warrants and to the collecting & remitting of sight and time bills. Investments made in any part of Iowa." Besides locating numerous towns and river systems, the state's burgeoning railroad system is shown, with many proposed routes depicted across the state by means of dotted lines. This is the second edition of the map, after the first of 1854, but apparently printed from a new plate to incorporate the rapid growth. A third edition followed in 1856. Phillips A List of Maps of America, p. 337; Rumsey 1739; Graff 1857; Streeter sale 3898.

On November 13, 1862 Arboleda was assassinated at the age of 45. 1 page, 6.75 x 4.75 inches, no place, no date, circa 1855. Written in Spanish and untranslated, thanking a friend for sending him a book and sending well wishes. Below this letter is an inscription (from the 1850s or 60s) in Spanish, stating: "This is the autograph of the grand poet Latin-American Julio Arboleda...certified authentic." Usual folds; very good condition. Though we have been unable to identify the authenticator's name, we were able to match Arboleda's handwriting from examples in several archives to our letter, and we are certain that our letter is authentic.

History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs. Embellished with One Hundred and Twenty Portraits, from the Indian Gallery in the Department of War, At Washington.

Philadelphia: D. Rice & A. N. Hart. Good. 1855. Hardcover. Complete set of three volumes in this third octavo edition, housed in a brown slipcase. Original brown blind stamped morocco, with five bands and worn gilt on spine. Spines have been rebacked and edges and corners have darker repairs. Rubbed and bumped spine ends and corners. Spines have a red tinge to them, with some light soil on leather. Bindings tight. All edges gilt with some scuffs. Bookseller's description on front pastedown of volume I, brief inked note on front pastedown of volume III. Moderate soil on endpapers and some pages, including title pages. Margin dampstains afffect some pages in all three volumes, with old mold spots on the endpapers and the margins of the last 30 pages of volume I and the endpapers of volume III. The majority of the plates, chromo-lithographs with some hand painting and original tissue guards, are in very good condition. All plates present as called for. The plates are from the paintings of Charles Bird King made for the War Department, with lithography by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia. An 1865 fire at a Smithsonian gallery destroyed most of the original paintings, making McKenney's work the primary preserved record of the lost paintings. With the History, Thomas McKenney sought to document what he realized were fast vanishing tribes and their cultures. He was the head of the US Indian Trade program and later the Superintendent of Indian Affairs, publishing these volumes after he had been removed from his position by Andrew Jackson. For the biographies included in the volumes McKenney had interviewed many of the subjects brought to Washington as delegates, with sketches of Red Jacket, Sequoyah, and Osceola and more. Attorney and judge James Hall wrote the general history. The octavo editions were reduced from the first folio edition, with the addition of biographies. Iv, 333; xvii, 9-290; iv, 17-392.         Business trading in cotton and other commodities, as recorded in a business ledger compiled by C.A. Burgess of New York City, 1855-1865, consisting of manuscript receipts, with a number of partly printed receipts and other documents, completed in manuscript and tipped-in

New York, 1855-1865. Small oblong 4to. 148 leaves, almost all with manuscript entries on both sides, usually more than one per page, interleaved with blotting paper, as issued. The receipts, representing hundreds of transactions are signed by nearly as many New York merchants, acknowledging payment for a variety of goods, primarily cotton, liquor, spices, flour, rice, lard, and other goods, occasionally for individual items (e.g.,"piano forte and stool"), rent, shipping costs (among the ships mentioned in the receipts: Young America, The Flying Dutchman, Andrew Jackson, Golden Eagle, and Golden Fleece), or other business transactions. Beginning in 1860, the trade turns primarily to cotton and primarily with dealers in Mobile, Alabama, and San Francisco, but occasionally in New Orleans, Boston, or Providence. Burgess (1817-1896), a native of Dedham, Massachusetts, arrived in New York as a merchant around 1850, working there until he moved to San Francisco in 1880, working as a cotton and mining broker until he died there in 1896. Very good. Original reverse-calf ledger binding (spine ends worn), leather spine label. (#5209)

Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Meccah

London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1855-56. First Edition. Hardcover. A complete three-volume set of one of the best Middle East travel accounts of all time. Housed in a later brown cloth and half-leather custom clamshell. Bright blue original boards with black decorative imprint and gilt on spine. Sunning on spines. The spines have been rebacked with more recent endpapers and rehinging, and the board edges have been expertly repaired, still with bumped edges. There is some chipping of pages, with three pages missing margin pieces of about an inch. Pages are generally clean with light soil spots on just a few and light dampstaining on margin edge of frontispieces. Toning on endpapers and pages edges. There is a blue postmarked stamp from Hejaz, the kingdom Burton traveled through, with the penciled year of 1920 next to it on the title page of Volume I. Pages xiv, errata page, 388, [1]-24 adverts; iv, 426; x, [1] plate list, 448. With five bright chromo-lithographs (one a frontispiece of Burton dressed as a pilgrim) , eight tinted plates, two black and white full-page engravings, and three folding plans or maps. In 1853 Englishman Richard Francis Burton disguised himself as a Muslim pilgrim to observe an Arabia virtually inaccessible to westerners at the time. He travelled to Medina and the forbidden holy city of Mecca, ascertaining for westerners that the prophet Mohammed's tomb was in Medina, not Mecca, and meticulously describing every aspect of the cultures he encountered. His account was deemed quite accurate by later adventurers and observers in the region, including T. E. Lawrence. An amazing narrative, in a scarce set. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall .

Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, London 1855 - Octavo, two volumes, 24 pp. advertisements in the second volume not noted by Ferguson; inner hinges split and tender, but still holding, nonetheless a very good copy in the original green cloth. First edition of a classic; probably the best of the digger narratives, it is a lively account of colonial and goldfields life noted for its vivid immediacy. Howitt attempts a thorough critique of colonial society, informed by his own radical liberalism. Writing before Eureka, his candid and reasoned criticism of the land laws and the administration of the goldfields gave articulate expression to the concerns and aspirations of the emigrant diggers.
