CHART OF THE NORTH PACIFIC OCEAN, EXHIBITING THE EASTERN SHORES OF ASIA AND THE WESTERN COAST OF NORTH AMERICA, FROM THE EQUATOR TO BEHRING'S STRAIT WITH PLANS, ON AN ENLARGED SCALE OF THE PRINCIPAL ISLANDS AND HARBOURS [caption title]

London: James Imray & Son, 1855. Engraved map, 39 x 74 inches. Backed with linen. Several manuscript pencil plot lines. Lightly tanned, with a few wrinkled areas. Very good. A massive "blue back" sea chart of the North Pacific encompassing both Asian and American coastlines, produced by one of the leading private British publishers of sea charts in the mid-19th century, James Imray. The map depicts the Pacific Rim from Borneo and the Philippines north to the Bering Strait, and thence the western coast of the Americans south to present day Colombia and the Galapagos Islands. It also accurately shows major and minor Pacific islands, including those in the Marian, Caroline, and Marshall chains, the Sandwich Islands (modern Hawaii), and many other isolated islands that were crucial waypoints for the navigation of the Pacific Ocean. In the upper right quadrant of the chart are six insets showing important islands and harbors in detail: The Philippine, Marian, and Sandwich Islands, as well as San Francisco, Victoria, and the Awatska Bay in Kamchatka, and across the Pacific Ocean are plotted several key great circle routes, from San Francisco to China and the Sandwich Islands, and from the Sandwich Islands to Hong Kong and Colombia. The purpose of such a large map was for the convenience of a ship's navigator, who had to track a ship's position over the course of a long journey, as evidenced by the manuscript plot lines in this copy. During this period, Imray was fast becoming the principal private supplier of sea charts to the merchant ships of Great Britain. His popularity was due in large part to the production of charts such as this one, which provided new and essential basic guides to areas of the Pacific beginning to be frequented more heavily by private British traders. "Salesmanship and prolific output alone would not have brought success unless the quality of the product had been right. In achieving this Imray had an advantage over earlier generations of commercial chart publishers, who faced a continual problem acquiring adequate hydragraphic information for their charts. By Imray's time accurate new survey material was fast becoming available for all parts of the world.... His contribution was to present the material in a convenient and familiar form for the merchant ship navigator. This had changed little over the years and Imray retained the well-tried format of a small-scale chart covering as much as possible of the sea passage for a particular trade, with numerous large-scale plans of ports" - Fisher. Rare, with OCLC recording only one copy, at Brown University, and not in the British Library. FISHER, THE MAKERS OF THE BLUEBACK CHARTS, p. 39. OCLC 549596970.

        Flower Fables

Boston: George W. Briggs, 1855. First edition of Louisa May Alcott's first book, written in 1849, when she was sixteen years old. These fanciful fairy stories were designed to amuse Alcott's young neighbor Ellen Emerson, daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Highlights include "The Frost King," "Lily-Bell and Thistledown," and "Ripple, The Water-Spirit": "Soon she saw Spring come smiling over the earth; sunbeams and breezes floated before, and then, with her white garments covered with flowers, with wreaths in her hair, and dewdrops and seeds falling fast from her hands, the beautiful season came singing by." Alcott was thrilled when George Briggs agreed to publish Flower Fables as a child's Christmas gift, but was not impressed by the illustrations he commissioned for the volume, writing to Ellen Emerson that "the designer is not as well acquainted with fairy forms & faces as you & I are, so we must each imagine to suit ourselves & I hope if the fairies tell me any more stories, they will let an Elfin artist illustrate them." BAL 142. A near-fine copy, much brighter than usually seen. Octavo, original pictorial red cloth stamped in gilt and blind, yellow endpapers. Engraved frontispiece and five full-page plates. Lightest rubbing to spine ends, front free endpaper creased.

        Quittung mit eigenh. U. ("Elisabeth").

Wien, 17. XI. 1855. - ½ S. Folio.

Autograph letter signed to Giuseppe Verdi in the hand of his leading soprano

      - 4 pp. Large octavo (ca. 220 x 170 mm.). Dated Eaux-Bonnes (Pyrénées Atlantiques, France), September 25, 1855. In Italian (with translation). A lengthy and very interesting letter discussing Frezzolini's proposed engagement at the Paris Opéra as Eleonora (in Il Trovatore) and its terms, alluding to an opera that she does not want to sing, etc. "All other considerations aside, how can one live in Paris on such a pittance? I also believe it necessary that, entering such an enticing theatre as the Opéra, one must do it without pomp and ceremony but discreetly, as is appropriate for an artist who, unfortunately, is not at the beginning of her career. In any case, I know that such are your ideas, and that is the reason why I had begged you, and still beg you, to settle this affair yourself. I would be happy. to combine business with pleasure and appear again in Paris with my part of Eleonora, and I am convinced that, if you really want it, it will per force be done." Slightly worn and browned with some show-through; soiled at upper outer corners; creased at folds. Frezzolini was the leading Verdi soprano in the 1840s. Closely identified with Romantic opera and especially with Verdi, Frezzolini "had bel canto skills but sang in the new manner called for by Verdi's works, uniting smooth legato and dramatic power. Her sensational début, at Florence in 1837, was in the title role of Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda; this remained one of her most effective parts, along with Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia (in which she caused another sensation, at La Scala in 1840), Bellini's Elvira (I puritani), and Verdi's Giselda, Gilda (Rigoletto) and Leonora (Il trovatore). She also created the title role in Coccia';s Giovanna II, regina di Napoli (1840, Milan). She was compared to Maria Malibran for boldness, intensity and pathos, with an added sweetness of timbre; Fétis wrote of her beauty and nobility on stage. After an early London season (1841) and many Italian engagements, she spent the years between 1847 and 1857 in St Petersburg, Madrid, London and Paris." John Rosselli in Grove Music Online.

Plan of Boston comprising a part of Charlestown and Cambridge

Boston: "George G. Smith ... Also by Ide and Dutton", 1855. Engraved folding pocket map, period hand-colouring in outline. Inset maps of South Boston and East Boston. Street index along the left margin. Folds into publisher's blindstamped cloth covers, title stamped in gilt on the upper cover, Ide & Dutton advertisement on the front pastedown. A noted mid-19th century map of Boston: among the earliest to show the proposed filling of Back Bay. This decorative map of Boston shows the city divided into wards and fire districts, with the city's streets and wharves named. The map further identifies many of the public buildings, schools and churches located in the city. The most notable feature on this map, however, is its depiction of the proposed filling of Back Bay. "The tide mills had not been successful and, cut off by the Mill Dam and with the flow of water further impeded by the railroad embankments, the Back Bay, into which all the sewers from surrounding areas drained, had become a stinking cesspool. By the early 1850s it was determined that the only solution was to fill the bay, and in 1854 the state and the Boston Water Power Company, the two major owners of the Back Bay flats, made an agreement for filling them. This agreement included the street grid plan shown on the 1855 map. This street grid had been laid out without regard for the railroad tracks, and eventually only the streets east of Dartmouth, which is just west of the point where the tracks crossed, were constructed..." (Mapping Boston, plate 39, page 205). The filling of Back Bay would begin in 1857 and take nearly twenty-five years to complete. This copy an unusual variant, with a large reservoir appearing just below the Mill Dam, with the explanation "Plan of improvement proposed by Hon. David Sears." This reservoir was removed in subsequent issues of the map, suggesting this to be an early state. Mapping of Boston , p. 205.
