        TO THE PUBLIC.

[Harrisburg:. 1854]. Broadside, 9.75" x 10.5", printed in three columns. Lightly dusted and minor wear, old folds. Else Very Good. This rare broadside, from American ['Know Nothing'] Party members of the Pennsylvania Legislature, attacks Simon Cameron, "one of the most intriguing, if not the most corrupt politician in the State." The broadside explains their refusal to support Cameron for the U.S. Senate. "Could we have exhonorated ourselves from the odium of such a nomination...?" Cameron is a chameleon: he has, from time to time, been a Whig, a Know-Nothing, and an anti-slavery man. During this latter incarnation he supported President Franklin Pierce's pro-slavery Kansas-Nebraska Act. In short, "there is not character enough in the man to impose upon credulity itself." Indeed, he is "an old political hack." The broadside is signed in type at Harrisburg on February 12, 1854 by Nicholas Thorn, Jno. F. Linderman, T.L. Baldwin, Samuel B. Page and twenty-four others. Not located on OCLC as of October 2014, or anywhere else.

        Two Poems.

8vo. Original printed wrappers; pp. 16; a fine copy First edition of an estimated 300 copies. The two poems are 'A Plea for the Ragged Schools of London' by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and 'The Twins' by Robert Browning. The cost of printing the pamphlet was paid by the Brownings and the proceeds were given to the Ragged Schools. Thomas J Wise and Buxton Forman copied the format of this printing for their forgeries, even going as far to claim that the format had in fact been first used on their forgery of The Ruanaway Slave (supposedly printed in 1849), and then had been copied by the Brownings fot Two Poems.         A Gazetteer of the Territories under the Government of the East-India Company, and of the Native States on the Continent of India.

London: W.H. Allen & Co.,, 1854. Compiled by the Authority of the Hon. Court of Directors, and Chiefly from Documents in their Possession. 4 volumes octavo (213 x 132 mm). Contemporary half calf, maroon sand-grained cloth, matched red morocco lettering- and numbering-pieces, low flat bands, milled in gilt, compartments with central lozenge composed of floral tools and floral spray corner-pieces, double fillets in blind to the corner and spine edges, edges densely sprinkled red, flat mid-green endpapers. Folding engraved, hand-coloured map (420 × 350 mm) as frontispiece. Moderate shelfwear, some gilt flaked from the spines, endpapers just cracking at the hinges, but entirely sound, map with a split to one fold, repaired verso with archival tissue, short split on the stub, very light browning, overall an excellent set. First edition of this comprehensive gazetteer, an entirely invaluable reference work, this edition much preferred to that issued three years later condensed into an unmanageable single volume and issued without the map. The contents extend far beyond bald geographical information taking the historical, ethnographical and anecdotal. The compiler, often confused with Edward Parry Thornton the Indian administrator, was on the staff of East-India House for over 40 years. He was head of the Statistical Department from 1846-57, and of the Marine Department from 1847, and is rightly considered to be the pioneer in the systematic collection and publication of Indian statistics. This a handsome set with excellent provenance, having the armorial bookplates of Sir Julius Wernher, the great German-born Randlord and philanthropist, to the front pastedowns.

        Les Différents Publics de Paris

Paris: Au Bureau du Journal Amusant, [1854]. First edition. Oblong quarto (10 x 13 1/4 in; 254 x 335 mm.). Lithograph title and twenty original lithograph plates. Publisher's lithographed green boards, small piece (1 1/8 inch) missing from top of spine. Ink signature on front free end-paper. Some light foxing, heavier on preliminary leaves). A superb copy of the second 'collection' from the most popular and successful French book illustrator of the mid 19th century. "These twenty lithographs are studies of massed humanity, ranging from the audiences at the great Parisian theatres to the crowds at a wrestling match or a Punch and Judy show. Without exception they are striking in conception and fertile in detail. To compare Doré's version of the reader's room at the library [no. 14, and amongst Doré's celebrated] with Daumier's in Les bas bleus is to ask one's self what word is left for the first if the second is called a caricature. Yet each of Doré's scenes is based on close observation, and the album provides valuable testimony to the manners of the day" (Ray). One of Doré's earliest efforts with which he made his debut at age twenty-two, Les Différents Publics de Paris "scored an easy success brilliant masterly lithographed skits on Paris" (Gosling, p. 16, 38). Bound for presentation in buff full morocco, raised bands to spine forming compartments, second and third gilt-lettered directed, remaining compartments richly gilt with floral sprays, gilt supralibros of the Tucker family to sides enclosed by concentric floral, Greek-key, dotted and twin fillet rolls, all edges gilt, floral roll to turn-ins gilt, white moiré silk-effect endpapers, bound silk page-marker. Engraved portrait frontispiece with facsimile signature. Extremities, joints and raised bands lightly rubbed, spine toned, light foxing to endleaves, frontispiece and final page. A very good copy in a handsome binding. Presentation copy of the second edition, inscribed by Henry Tucker's wife on the title page, "Clarice Elizabeth Tucker, from her affection mother Jane Tucker, 1859", in a superior binding with the gilt supralibros of the Tucker family to both covers. "In 1786 Tucker [1771/2-1851] sailed to Calcutta as a midshipman on an East Indiaman and upon arrival took up various clerical appointments, including that of private secretary to Sir William Jones" (ODNB). In 1792 he joined the Bengal civil service and displayed a particular flair for financial matters, drafting plans for establishing a bank (later realised in the Bank of Bengal) before being appointed judicial and revenue secretary in 1799, and then accountant-general in 1801. In 1806 he was convicted of the attempted rape of Dorothea Simpson, wife of a former colleague, for which he was imprisoned for six months and heavily fined, though the episode, entirely unmentioned in Kaye's biography, in fact did little to affect his career. He married Jane (d. 1869), daughter of Robert Boswell, signet of Ediburgh, in 1811, and returned to England permanently in 1815. In 1826 he was elected a director of the East India Company and remained on the court until his death, "devoting great energy to issues of Indian administration" (idem.) He led the conservation reaction to the radical anti-landlord revenue measures of the 1830s, the defence of the company's privileges against missionaries and free-traders, and the company's opposition to the annexation of Sindh and to the First Afghan War. Kaye's Life was first published the previous year.

[From printed upper cover]: Die neuen Glasgemälde im Dome zu Köln, Weihegeschenk Seiner Majestät des Königs Ludwig I. von Bayern. Photographieen von Johann Franz Michiels. Directions-Mitglied der Königl. Academie zu Brügge.

Five plates each with a mounted orig. salt print within gilt borders forming lancet windows. One leaf of printed text in German, French, and English. Folio, orig. publisher's printed boards (extremities a bit worn), cloth spine. Cologne: F.C. Eisen, 1854. First edition of this early photographically illustrated book depicting the new stained-glass windows, created by J. Fischer and Hellweger, and donated by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. In the mid-19th century there was a great effort to complete the Cathedral of Cologne, begun in 1248 and finally finished in 1880. "From the mid-1850s the photographically illustrated books, with widely differing subject matter including paintings, engravings,...sculpture, architecture, and the decorative and minor arts, were being produced in modest but ever increasing numbers throughout Europe. This type of publication mirrored the art book illustrated with engravings or lithographs which was prevalent during this period. In some cases photographic publishers ambitiously aimed at a European market which was being developed through burgeoning tourism. One such publisher was Franz Carl Eisen of Cologne who from 1853, in collaboration with the photographer J. F. Michiels produced a series of trilingual (in German, French and English) photographically illustrated publications. Most of these were on works of art and architecture."-A. J. Hamber, A Higher Branch of the Art. Photographing the Fine Arts in England 1839-1880, p. 155. Each of the plates are framed and printed in bright gold. Michiels was a Belgian photographer from Bruges. In nice fresh condition. Text leaf and versos of plates with a small and inoffensive library stamp. Release stamp on verso of text leaf. ❧ See The Truthful Lens. Neite, "Der Verkauf photographischer Bilder in den frühem Jahren der Photographie" in Silber und Salz. Riddick, Who Was Who in British India, p. 367. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Titley Court was home to the Greenly family for over 500 years. The Greenly family have a long and fascinating history, perhaps most famous for the life and libary of Elizabeth Greenly, later Lady Elizabeth Greenly, who was noted as a collector and patron of literature and the arts. The Greenly library consists mostly of her collection of contemporary Regency literature, however it was expanded after her death by various members of her extended family. Notable among these are Edward Greenly, a famous Victorian geologist, and William Bradford, a founding father who travelled to America on the Mayflower and who was closely associated with the Greenlys at Titley Court through marriage. The rich and diverse history of the Greenlys at Titley Court is reflected in the broad selection of works found in the library. Without Index volume as published later. Collated, complete. Sir Archibald Alison was a Scottish advocate and historian. ?His History of Europe was his first publication and his chief work.       [1854]. first edition. A Superb Copy Of One of the Master's Earliest SuccessesDORÉ, Gustave. Les Différents Publics de Paris. One of Doré's earliest efforts with which he made his debut at age twenty-two, Les Différents Publics de Paris "scored an easy successÂ…brilliantÂ…masterly lithographed skits on Paris" (Gosling, p. 16, 38).         Hard Times For These Times

London: Bradbury & Evans, 1854. First edition. Octavo, bound in early 20th century full red morocco. Gilt titles and tooling to the spine, triple gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, inner dentelles, top edge gilt. In near fine condition. A very nice presentation. Hard Times focuses on the inadequacy of a lifestyle that emphasizes only the human intellect at the expense of the imagination and "the heart." Dickens also attacked the conditions of life in England's industrial cities, which produced the wealth that made his country the foremost industrial power in the mid-19th century-- but at a great cost to human happiness. Hard Times was viewed as a departure from the author's previous tales, presenting what was to become an increasingly somber picture of contemporary society in Dickens' works. Eckel, 131. Gimbel A136. Occasional light chip to a plate edge, not at all affecting the image. Volume 2: A cleaner, tighter copy than Vol. 1 but with a stamp on the image of two of the plates.. Green library buckram. Each volume contains numerous hand-colored plates, with tissue guards; each plate accompanied by a 2-page annotation. The plate and text both are numbered the same, as a "group."         Oakfield or Fellowship In the East

Longman, UK 1854 - Second Edition 1854. Presentation copy to 'F.B.W Arnold from her affectionate brother the author. Blackheath June 1854'. Originally published under the pseudonym Punjabee. The second edition, of 1854, reveals the author's identity and adds a preface which functions as an apologia. This novel by the youner son of Thomas Arnold and brother of Matthew Arnold is of major importance both as a acoount of the British in India and as a vivid picture of religeous doubt and a young man's crisis of conscience. The book is one of the earliest novelistic accounts of life in British India, and its plot strongly mirrors the biography of its author. Set in India in the years surrounding the First Afghan War, the novel describes the unhappy experiences of the eponymous Edward Oakfield, an Oxford graduate who, we are told, enlisted in the East India Company's military service because he had grown tired of the metaphysical debates dominating that university. In India, Oakfield is repelled by what he sees as an absence of Christian gentlemanliness among the Company's military officers, and he soon retreats to introspection and the comradeship of a few, thinly spread, kindred spirits. The novel is a stinging indictment of the moral standards of the British regiments in India. This second edition contains a new preface by the author in which he defends himself against those who say he slurred the good name of the Indian army officers. The books are good++ and bound in their original cloth. Cloth edges very rubbed and repaired in places. Hinges repaired in places especially at the spine tips. . Contents good.
