- Weiss 3641.

A collection of 63 original watercolours, titled in manuscript: Mammiferes. Paris, L Curmer. 1854.

. Folio (378 x 265mm). With calligraphic title in pen as above and 63 paintings, watercolours, gouache, and pencil on paper, each signed by the artists in pencil, most titled and with notes on the scale of the drawings; in fine condition, bound in contemporary red half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt, top edge gilt, engraved bookplate of Grandidier. A fine series of original paintings for Paul Gervais' 'Les Trois Regnes de la Nature: Regne Animal. Histoire naturelle des mammiferes' (Paris, 1854-55). This album includes the original paintings for all 56 plates in the work, and a further 7 paintings that were not used. The animals were all painted by Werner, and the uncoloured backgrounds, in finely shaded pencil, were executed by Alexandre de Bar. Jean-Charles Werner (1798-1856) was a natural history artist and comparative anatomist for the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, where he contributed some 350 paintings of animals on vellum for the famous Collection des velins between the years 1826 and 1856. The Collection, initiated in 1631, contained work by the finest natural history artists in France, including Nicolas Robert and Pierre-Joseph Redoute. Werner provided illustrations for the publication of Dumont d'Urville's expeditions to Australia and the South Pacific, and also worked with Cuvier, Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, and Henri Ducrotay de Blainville. Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire named a species of monkey after him. The animals depicted include many recently discovered on the voyages of Dumont d'Urville and others. On plate 40 there is a note by Werner to the colourist Alfred Joseph Annedouche 'faire l'animal plus force'. The published plates were engraved on steel, and the animals alone were hand-coloured, leaving the backgrounds plain as here. Provenance: engraved bookplate of Alfred Grandidier (1836-1921), French naturalist and explorer, and author of the monumental 40-volume survey of Madagascar 'Histoire physique, naturelle et politique de Madagascar' (1875-1937)..

WALDEN; Or, Life in the Woods

Boston:: Ticknor and Fields,, 1854.. Boston:: Ticknor and Fields,. 1854. First edition. By far his most famous and lasting work. One of the Grolier 100. This reflection on the simple life in a natural setting compresses Thoreau's experiences over the course of two-plus years in a cabin near Walden Pond into a single year and is considered to be a personal declaration of independence, social experiment, spiritual discovery, and a manual for self-reliance. "If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away."--Thoreau. Brown cloth, yellow endpapers, and lithographed map of Walden Pond tipped in facing p.307, as called for. This copy with ads tipped in at front and back dated May 1854--presumably an early copy, as tipped-in ads range from April to October. Name stamped on front pastedown, covers show very subtle spotting, very minor professional repair at spine ends (just an eighth-inch) and corners (a scant sixteenth-inch). A nice copy of this classic collection of essays. Housed in blue-green cloth chemise and old red cloth slipcase with black leather spine labels on the red leather spine, which shows some rubbing to corners and spine bands. A nice copy of this classic collection of essays.

Gemeinnütziger Kalender für Victoria auf das Jahr 1854

Melbourne, 'Morning-Herald' Office, 1854 - Octavo, [20] pages. Original blue wrappers, repeating on the front cover the title and imprint details of the title page (with the addition of a decorative border and the Australian coat of arms); wrappers very lightly foxed and creased; top corner lightly creased throughout; an excellent copy. Ferguson 10024aa (courtesy of Libraries Australia). For a similar item by Goethe, under the title 'Victoria's Deutscher Kalender .', see Ferguson 17955 and 17956 (1855 and 1857); no other years seem to have been produced, and this 1854 publication would appear to be the earliest issue of this calendar. Although all and sundry on Libraries Australia describe this as a 'church calendar', the title translates (according to our elementary German anyway!) as 'the generally useful calendar' or 'the calendar of public benefit', and within its space limitations, it is just that. At the head of each monthly calendar are the phases of the moon and times of sunrise and sunset, and at the foot there is a 'Feld- und Garten-Kalender' (4-7 lines each month). There are numerous historical references (both national and international) on many of the days of the year, and five closely printed pages at the rear of the pamphlet contain a potted history of the colony (including a section on its separation from NSW), the nature of the land and agricultural pursuits. Well, at least the FINAL page is devoted to matters religious . Use [Ask Bookseller a Question] option below to confirm availability.

London: John Murray, 1854-1855. Octavo, 8 volumes. Three quarters dark blue leather with raised bands to the spine and gilt ruling to the front and rear panels. Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. With folding maps. In near fine condition. Additional notes by M. Guizot, Guisot and William Smith. A very attractive set. This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works… Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equalled to this day; and the result was clothed in inimitable prose" (PMM 222). "For 22 years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly 1500 years. And so thorough were his methods that the laborious investigations of German scholarship, the keen criticisms of theological zeal, and the steady researches of (two) centuries have brought to light very few important errors in the results of his labors. But it is not merely the learning of his work, learned as it is, that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition, the boundless range, the infinite variety, and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical whole. It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written" (Adams, Manual of Historical Literature, 146-7).

Memoirs and Correspondence of Major-General Sir William Nott

London: Hurst and Blackett, Publishers,, 1854. Commander of the Army of Candahar, and Envoy at the Court of the King of Oude. Edited at the Request of Sir William Nott's Daughters, Letitia Nott and Charlotte Bower, from Documents in their Exclusive Possession. 2 volumes octavo (217 × 135 mm). Recent half calf, marbled boards, to style, black lettering-pieces to the second compartments, volume numbers direct to the fourth, narrow bands, gilt milling, edges sprinkled red, light brown endpapers. Engraved frontispiece to each, portrait to volume I, a view of the fortress at Ghuzni to volume II. Light browning, some mild foxing, a very good copy, now suitably and pleasingly presented. First edition. An uncommon memoir, and an important source for the First Afghan War. Nott was commissioned as ensign in the East India Company's army in 1800, and posted to the 20th Bengal Native Infantry, serving with them in the expedition to the west coast of Sumatra in 1805. From 1811 until 1825 he served as "superintendent of native pensions and paymaster of family pensions at Barrackpore", but after leave in England returned to India to take command of the 20th NI and despite having "been so long in a semi-military post, he brought his regiment into such a state of efficiency that his services were required to do the same for other regiments. He commanded a succession of native infantry regiments and on 1 December 1829 was promoted colonel" (ODNB). During the First Afghan War Nott commanded the troops at Kandahar and Quetta, sending out "small successful expeditions from both locales against rebellious tribes" (Riddick, Who was Who …); and in 1842 was placed in command of "all the troops in Lower Afghanistan and Sindh, and of the political officers there". His operations in defence of Kandahar, and in relief of Kabul were rewarded by his appointment to the residency and Lucknow with the title of envoy to the king of Oudh; and the presentation of "a valuable sword in the name of the British government" by Lord Ellenborough, who told Wellington that he considered Nott to be superior to all the other generals: "Ellenborough was right. Despite his cantankerous nature Nott was by far the best general in the Anglo-Afghan War. He was also a protagonist of the sepoy, whom he compared favourably with the British soldier." In 1844 he was created GCB, voted an annuity of £1000 by the directors of the Company, and granted the freedom of the City of London. He died aged 63 on New Years' Day 1845.
