The Works of Oliver Goldsmith. Edited by Peter Cunningham, F.S.A. In four volumes.

John Murray 1854 - additional engraved title-page in each vol., vol. i also with an engraved frontispiece, pp. xii, 468; [vi], 487; [iv], 447; [iv], 450, 8vo, contemporary red pebble-grain morocco prize binding from Trinity College, Cambridge, boards with the college arms blocked in gilt, spines lettered in gilt direct with the arms at head and foot, prize label to front pastedown, along with other ownership labels to endpapers (see below), edges gilt, the merest touch of rubbing and a few minor marks, very good. Awarded as a prize at Trinity College Cambridge in 1858 to Henry Thornton Forster, First Class in the Examination of Freshmen. Thornton Forster (1838-1865) died young and his siblings inherited his books; vol. i contains the label 'L.M. Forster e lib H.T.F.' (i.e. Laura Mary Forster, 1839-1924) while the other three have 'E.M. Forster e lib H.T.F.' (i.e. Edward Morgan Llewellyn Forster, 1847-1880). The set was then inherited by E.M.L. Forster's son, the novelist E.M. Forster (1879-1970), whose booklabel also appears on each front pastedown. E. M. Forster was actually meant to be named in honour of his late uncle, and at his birth was registered as 'Henry Morgan', but his father's absent-minded answer of his own name at a crucial moment meant the novelist was baptised 'Edward Morgan' instead. Forster read Goldsmith closely, and in an essay 'The Novelists of the Eighteenth Century and Their Influence on Those of the Nineteenth', published in 'The Creator as Critic', 2008), Forster describes him as a strong influence on his generation of writers: 'It was Fielding and Smollett who exercised the greatest influence on the last generation, and it is Sterne and Goldsmith who have been powerful over this' (p. 160). He says of The Vicar of Wakefield that 'it is so delicate and lovely that even to call it humorous seems coarse, and the slightest attempt at description or analysis robs it of its nameless charm' (p. 156).

He graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School with an MD in 1825 later returning the practice in Dublin at Meath Hospital. he went on to create two important works on cardiac and pulmonary diseases - A Treatise on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases of the Chest (1837) and The Diseases of the Heart and Aorta (1854) - as well as one of the first treatises on the use of the stethoscope.         The Royal South Australian Almanack and General Directory for 1854

Adelaide, printed and published at the 'Register' and 'Observer' Office, 1854 - Duodecimo, [xii], 244, 42 (Directory), 36 (advertisements) pages with the hand-coloured plate featuring nine 'Signals used at the West Terrace Flagstaff'. Flush-cut quarter cloth and printed card covers (repeating the title page details on the front, with advertisements on the rear); covers rubbed, marked and lightly tidemarked, with some simple arithmetic on the front cover and front flyleaf; extremities of the covers lightly worn; minimal expert restoration to the foot of the front hinge; title written in ink on the spine; minor signs of age and use; essentially a very good copy with the contemporary ownership details of Joseph Grivell, 1854, on the flyleaf (and indistinctly on the front cover). In the preface, dated 10 January 1854, the compiler apologises for the lateness of the appearance of the almanack, the delay being 'occasioned by the extreme difficulty in obtaining compositors' - presumably all off to the diggings. He also apologises for the 'total omission of the Country Directory' for various reasons, so the 42-page directory covers only Adelaide and suburbs. Most of the balance of the book is given over to the usual statistics, regulations and lists of assorted office-bearers. However, the farmers' and gardeners' calendar runs to 18 pages, and there is a lengthy and important contribution by E.W. Andrews: 'Navigation of the Murray. Being extracts from a journal kept on board the "Lady Augusta" during Captain Cadell's exploratory voyage from the Goolwa to Ganawarra' (51 pages). Fellow-passengers James Allen and Arthur Kinloch published their independent accounts of this pioneering trip in book form in late 1853. In any event, Andrews' account was reasonably hot off the press; his last journal entry was dated 15 October 1853, less than three months before this almanack, delayed in publication, appeared.         Promenade Pittoresque par A. Fontanési intérieur de Genève

Pilet & Cougnard, Editeurs 1854 Promenade Pittoresque par A. Fontanési intérieur de Genève. Antonio, Fontanési (Reggio nell'Emilia, 23 febbraio 1818 ?" Torino, 17 aprile 1882). Genève, Pilet & Cougnard, Editeurs, 1854. 20 litografie originali: 56 x 38,5 compreso i margini bianchi.
