        11 eigenh. Briefe m. Unterschrift.

Prag u.a., 1854-1859.. Zus. 49 S., Kl.-8° u. 8°.. "[...] -

The Irish Industrial Exhibition of 1853 : a detailed catalogue of its contents, with critical dissertations, statistical information, and accounts of manufacturing processes in the different departments; .

      - Dublin, McGlashan 1854. Large octavo publisher's cloth (rebacked with most of the original spine preserved); xviii,502pp, portait, double page colour litho view of the central hall, double page plan, two elevation plates, four other plates, illustrations through the text. A few flaws to early pages, a couple professionally repaired with tissue, but quite a good copy. This also exists with a somewhat different title under the imprint of Sproule; either and both are very uncommon. Sproule, in his preface, records his conviction that this Dublin exhibition would be the last of its kind: 'the magnitude of the Exhibitions of 1851 and 1853 would have caused a long interval . before any future attempt could be made; but such attempts the almost faery creation of the Crystal Palace Company at Sydenham have rendered unnecessary' - ie the continuous exhibition of all that was new and excellent would make these monumental exhibitions obsolete. 'Considerable attention' is given to the Exhibition Building for much the same reasons - its temporary nature - thus the captivating colour view of the central hall, even though it added 'very materially to the expense of each copy'.         Interior of the new Crystal Palace, Sydenham. Hand-colored lithograph

1854 - Crystal Palace. Interior of the new Crystal Palace, Sydenham. No. 1. Hand-colored lithograph. London: Stannard & Dixon, 1854. 434 x 575 mm. Light foxing & toning, tiny paper flaw in blank upper margin, otherwise very good. Matted. A view of London's famous Crystal Palace showcasing the building's interior garden and fountains. The Crystal Palace, built to house the Great Exhibition of 1851, was constructed almost entirely out of iron and glass, and represents one of the more remarkable engineering feats of the nineteenth century. Originally located at Hyde Park, the Crystal Palace was dismantled after the Exhibition's end and rebuilt in 1854 in the London suburb of Sydenham, where it remained until it burned down in 1936. This print, evidently the first of a series, shows the building at its new site. Auerbach, The Great Exhibition of 1851, pp. 3, 193-95.

TO THE PUBLIC. IN A HANDBILL DATED APRIL 21, 1854, AND SIGNED IN LARGE CAPITAL LETTERS "JOHN POYNTER McMILLIN," THAT GENTLEMAN MAKES "THREE SPECIFIC CHARGES" AGAINST THE REV. MATTHIAS M. BARRON [first line of text]

[Hannibal, Mo.? 1854].. Broadside, 18 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Printed in three columns. Old folds. Moderately foxed. Contemporary docketing on verso. Good. An apparently unrecorded broadside issued by Judge Thomas J. Killen in response to slanders published by a former litigant, John Poynter McMillin. McMillin, who lives "within three miles of the City of Hannibal," lost a lawsuit over which Judge Killen presided. McMillin then published his version of the trial and his testimony in an attempt to refute the verdict against him. Killen's broadside is a rebuttal of those published slanders and falsehoods. It reads, in part: "To the Public. In a handbill dated April 31, 1854, and signed in large capital letters 'John Poynter McMillin,' that gentleman makes 'three specific charges' against the Rev. Matthias M. Barron. On these charges I have nothing to say. Mr. Barron is an aged gentleman, well known to this community; but when J.P. McMillin, in his hot haste to prove his charges and thereby prevent himself from 'sinking to the degraded level of a mere slanderer,' (as he terms it,) attempts to give the public a history of his lawsuit, and in so doing, misrepresents every important event of said lawsuit; and even publishes downright falsehood, concerning it. I take it upon myself as a party misrepresented, and falsified, to give the public a correct statement of said lawsuit." Killen goes on to disprove McMillin's "superlatively ridiculous" charges, mocks his evident insolvency, suggests he is a deadbeat, and assures McMillin: "you may banish fears of sinking to the degraded level of a mere slanderer. Both your tongue and your pen, sir, have lost all power of slander, or detraction; true like the native polecat, they may occasionally offend and disgust the community yet no one blames it because it is the nature of the beast." A most unusual judicial response to criticism, this broadside is doubtless the sort of thing many judges wish they could do today; unhappily, they are barred from doing so by the Canons of Judicial Ethics. Not located in any of the usual sources, including OCLC or the online catalogs of AAS, Harvard, or the Library of Congress.

WAR Of The GAUGES: or, Rail-Roading at Erie, Comprising an Official and Authentic Version of the Rail Road Troubles at Erie and Harbor Creek. Illustrated with Engravings and Maps, Prepared Expressly for this Publication; Forming a World-Renowned Chapter in Rail Road History

Cleveland, Ohio:: Stereotyped and Printed by Harris & Fairbanks, Herald Job Office.. 1854.. 8vo. 8-1/2" x 5-3/8". 1st edition (Sabin 82146). 61, [3] pp. Adverts last 2 pages.. Original printed buff-paper wrappers. Vignette to front wrapper, "The Women of Erie tearing down the Bridge over State Street." [not duplicated internally].. Ex-lib, though with no external markings. Remnants of bookplate to. front wrapper verso. The occasional blindstamp. Withal, a VG+ copy.. "In December, 1853, the city of Erie and the neighboring township of Harborcreek, with the enthusiastic support of a large majority of people, tore up the tracks of the Erie and North-East Railroad, wherever they crossed or entered the city streets or the public highway. This made a seven-and-one-half mile break in the recently-completed chain of railroads from New York to Cleveland and the Midwest. The railroad repeatedly re- laid its tracks; they were as often ripped up. ... Such was the beginning of the 'War of the Gauges,' which interrupted rail traffic between New York and the West for two months, and seriously inconvenienced it for two years. ... This conflict ... was one of the most fantastic episodes in Pennsylvania history, and certainly the most exciting in Erie history." Here offered is the first book publication to document, with individual statements & court testimony, this strife stemming ostensibly from differences regarding track width, but as is often the case, actually resulted from underlying strugges for "commercial leadership and economic advantage." [D. Kent, "The Erie War of the Gauges", Pennsylvania History, Vol. XV, No. 4, October 1948]. OCLC shows 13 institutional holdings. No copies at auction these past 30+ years. Rare in the trade. . T.p. vignette. Illustrated with 4 cuts [1 full page]. Map, p. 44.

With Mathew Brady credit in negative and E. & H. T. Anthony credit on verso. Minor toning to albumen at top left and minor mounting remnant on verso do not affect signatures, overall fine condition.         Carte et plan précis de Sébastopol et de ses environs.

Buffa & Cie Bruges 30 Novembre 1854 - Lithographed map (42x53.5 cm), partially coloured; slightly creased, minor foxing, minor tear to the centrefold. Fine map of Sebastopol showing the early military stages and formations of the Crimean War. With letterpress text providing military and geographical information. The war in Crimea took place in 1854-1855 and saw the Russian Imperial army oppose the allied troops of France, Britain and the Ottoman Empire in a series of battles that culminated in the famous siege of Sebastopol (Sevastopol) in the winter of 1854 and the subsequent defeat of the Russian Army. The historical event has been immortalized in the work of several artists and writers such as Leo Tolstoy, who served in the war and later wrote "Sevastopol Sketches", three short stories based on his first hand experience of the Siege.

        Bankoku-Tokai Nendai-Ki. [A Chronicle of Foreign Relations]

N.p. (Japan) 1854 - Stitch sewn booklet measuring 149 x 79 mm., with two fine coloured woodblock prints, one double-page; original stitched wrappers, original cloth folding case; now preserved in a handsome green quarter morocco bookform box, banded spine gilt with red morocco labels. A Dutch ship in Nagasaki. Rare and charming Japanese publication, with two fine coloured woodcuts, one a double-page view of a Dutch ship entering Nagasaki Bay, and the other depicting a Russian naval officer in full dress uniform. This slight volume was published as a description of the various voyages of foreign nations that arrived in Japan, from the earliest times up to the arrival of Perry at Uraga and Shimoda in 1854. One of the prints was used in the publication two years earlier of Manjiro Nakahama's famous Record of Drifting (see our catalogue of the Carlsmith collection, number 278).Dutch traders operated in Nagasaki in the eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries: they were confined to the island of Deshima (Dejima), in the harbour. Only about two hundred by eighty metres, it had originally been set aside for the Portuguese as a compromise allowing them to be in Japan but preventing their propagation of Christianity. The Dutch merchants of the VOC were exotic figures, as their confinement to Deshima meant that they would barely have been seen by most residents of Nagasaki, let alone other Japanese of the period. The depiction of exotic foreigners in the Japanese decorative arts was a feature that began in the early eighteenth century: in recent years we have offered an important Imari bowl depicting VOC ships and personnel, and a rare printed view of the island. Indeed the March issue begins on page 325 and ends on page 427. 3 times the normal issues.] 1-427 pages. Bound in 1/2 leather with marbled boards. This copy belonged to H[enry] J. Bunnell [of Waverly] and then to LeRoy D. Farnham of 42 Main St. This monthly contains literary republications like Adventures and experiences of Frances Felton ... poetry, etc. We are grateful for the articles entitled "The Susquehanna Valley: Gleanings from its Indian and Pioneer History". This printed material is the first history of Tioga County area and Owego, NY. Included are articles titled "Village gossip" and "Our Stocking". This copy has a loose manuscript note indicating that the Our Stocking articles are by Senator Platt. Included is a holograph manuscript letter, 2 page, to Dr. L. D. Farnham, Binghamton, NY May 28, 1897 from L. W. Kingman. LeRoy W. Kingman was the publisher of the Owego Gazette and historian of the Owego area [EARLY OWEGO published 1907]. The letter talks about the scarcity of this book. He is aware of only five copies extant including Bunnell's copy. The reason for the scarcity is that any copies not subscribed for burned in a fire. Contents are clean except for 2 pages with pencil marks lining the margins. The covers are broken at the hinges. There are some additional 20th. century newspaper clippings in a separate holder that repeat some of the history that relates to Broome County area. .

The principal forms of the skeleton. Parts 1-4 (complete).

      W. S. Orr, London 1854 - Owen, Richard (1804-92). The principal forms of the skeleton. Parts 1-4 (complete). 161-304pp. Text illustrations. London: W. S. Orr & Co., [1854]. 204 x 140 mm. Original printed wrappers, a little chipped, spine of part 4 worn away. Very good set. First Edition, in the Rare Original Parts. Published as part of William S. Orr's Circle of the Sciences, Owen's Principal Forms of the Skeleton was a popular rendition of his On the Archetype and Homologies of the Vertebrate Skeleton (1849), the work in which he laid out his system of comparative osteology and developed his concept of the vertebrate archetype. "The vertebrate archetype (from the Greek arkhe, 'original,' and tupos, 'imprinted image') is one of the most fascinating constructs of what has been called the 'morphological period' in the history of biology (approximately 1800-1860). It represented the fullest expression of a belief in the fundamental relatedness, if not of all organisms, at least of all animals with endoskeletons. Moreover, as Darwin scholars have long recognized, the vertebrate archetype provided a direct stepping-stone to the notion of evolutionary ancestors" (Rupke, "Richard Owen's vertebrate archetype," 231). The Principal Forms of the Skeleton was issued in both parts and in book form, and went through at least a dozen English and American editions. Rupke, "Richard Owen's vertebrate archetype," Isis 84 (1993): 231-251; Richard Owen, Victorian Naturalist (1994), pp. 161-170. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Two-page first draft of a holograph circular letter soliciting subscribers from Southern Ladies to raise funds for the purchase of Mt. Vernon; unsigned but dated 4 July, 1854 from Mobile, Alabama to Mrs. Levert of Georgia

First. One sheet folded to make four quarto pages. Blue paper with mill mark, folded as mailed, else about fine. Dated 4 July 1854 from Mobile, Alabama to Octavia Le Vert of Georgia: "...sending herewith to you a publication entitled 'Mount Vernon Addresses to the Ladies of the South' -- a subscription paper for the Ladies to raise funds for the purchase of Mt. Vernon, and setting it apart to the uses of a pious patriotism, -- and a note which with them has been addressed by a known hand, to me, from Augusta, Georgia." The unnamed correspondent further states: "How can I better comply with the wishes of those generous and spirited ladies of Georgia... than by committing their cause, here to the grand-daughter of a signer from that State of the Declaration which has made this the great holiday of our happy land...." Neither the publication nor the other mentioned note are present. The letter is attractive, and exhibits considerable revision. After his death, George Washington's estate changed hands among his descendants several times, with none capable of keeping up the grounds or meeting the demands of visitors. Mt. Vernon was in considerable disrepair by 1853, when a group of women banded together, specifically appealing to other American women, to raise funds to purchase and preserve the home of the nation's greatest hero (a movement which met some resistance because it implied that men were incapable of such preservation). Octavia Walton Le Vert (1811-1877), the granddaughter of George Walton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was a child prodigy who named the capital of Florida on behalf of her father, then the territorial governor. A prominent public speaker, she was known to many of the most important figures of her time including General Lafayette, Queen Victoria, Edgar Allan Poe, Washington Irving, Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, Daniel Webster, and General Beauregard. She joined and became a great force in the Association, serving as its Vice Regent from 1858 until her death. An interesting and pleasing example of American women's activism applied to a patriotic, and ultimately successful cause (the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association took possession of the property in 1860). .
