The Asiatic Mediterranean, and its Australian Port: the settlement of Port Flinders, and the Province of Albert, in the Gulf of Carpentaria

London: Printed for the Author, 26 August, 1853. Small octavo, frontispiece and two other plates, two folding maps; very good in the original red cloth, embossed in gilt to front, neatly rebacked. Flinders, King and Stokes adapted for a new settlement. Uncommon: one of the marvellous works of imagination relating to inland Australia (one thinks of works such as Maslen's Friend of Australia or Fox's Account of an Expedition to the Interior of New Holland). The proposal is for a new northern port to be established at the Albert River, at the south-eastern reach of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The tone of Saunders' work is neatly captured on the world map: the proposed province of "Albert" takes in most of modern-day Queensland and Northern Territory, the entire region marked the "Plains of Promise". The map of "Albert" is excellent, as are the three very fine views of scenes on the Albert River. Throughout, the debt to the accounts of Flinders, King, Leichhardt and Stokes is apparent. Saunders also dwells on the importance of the region for trade with south-east Asia, and most particularly Singapore. The book was, as is noted on the title-page, printed by the author "for official and private information only", but is not as dramatically scarce as that might suggest: it is, nonetheless, not often offered for sale.

Concord, New Hampshire from an original painting by G. Harvey, A.N.A.

      V. Bartholemew, London 1853 - An "Atmospheric View" of Concord New Hampshire The state capitol of New Hampshire, Concord, located on the west bank of the Merrimac River, about seventy miles northwest of Boston, is depicted in this excellent lithograph by M. & N. Hanhart, one of the top printmakers of nineteenth century London. The print is based on a painting made in 1852 by the artist George Harvey. "The Merrimac dominates the foreground of this charming view, where one of the large log rafts making its way down river bears two female travelers and their dog. Beyond them, nearer the shore, a catboat is shared by three passengers. In the distance loom four cupolas. The first, beginning at the left, belongs to the Unitarian Church, erected in 1829 and destroyed by fire in in 1854, just a year before the lithograph was published. The next is part of the First Baptist Church, erected in 1824-1825 and later remodeled. Moving further to the right, the next cupola belongs to the South Congregational Church, erected in 1836-1837 and destroyed by fire in 1859. The large cupola at the right is atop the State House.Just below the houses grouped on the hill to the left, a train with three passenger cars chugs along." (Deák). George Harvey (1800-1878), an artist of British birth who immigrated to the United States in 1828, often indicated after his name (as he does here) that he was an Associate of the National Academy of Design in New York. Harvey specialized in landscape painting and miniatures. While maintaining a presence in the London art world, Harvey established a home and studio near Hastings-on-Hudson, near New York City, where he conceived the idea of painting a series of "atmospheric views" of the northeast. "He is known for his particular attention to the shifting subtleties in color caused by outdoor atmospheric change" (Deák), much in evidence in this lithograph. A fine print of a quintessential American scene. Deák, Picturing America 646; Fowble, Two centuries of prints in America , 1680-1880, p.87, no. 35; Reps, Views and Viewmakers 2206; Who Was Who in American Art (Madison, Ct.: Sound View Press, 1999) II, pp.1483-84. Tinted lithograph with hand-colouring, printed by M. & N. Hanhart, after G. Harvey. Good condition apart from one expert repair to lower margin and one to lower right corner. Sheet size: 20 1/8 x 29 7/8 inches.

Essai sur l'inégalité des races humaines

Paris Librairie De Firmin Didot Freres 1853 - Hitler’s French Mentor GOBINEAU, [Joseph-Arthur Comte] de. Essai sur l'inégalité des races humaines. Paris: Librairie de Firmin Didot Frères, 1853-1855. First edition. Four volumes, octavo. Contemporary half mauve cloth over dark sprinkled boards. Spines ruled in blind and lettered in gilt. Spines a bit faded. Foxing throughout, front hinge of Volume I cracked but sound. Bookplates. A beautiful set. "The French Diplomatist and man of letters, Gobineau (1816-1882), has, through the ‘Essay on the Inequality of the Human Races’—his one excursion into the realms of anthropology and sociology—exerted an influence upon European thought and action which is quite disproportionate to its scholarly insignificance and inconsequential argumentation. The men of the Action Française, Lenin, Mussolini, and Hitler were, at one remove, the disciples and propagandists of Gobineau’s most outrageous ideas. Gobineau’s racial theories were based on a complete misunderstanding of the positicism of Comte and the reasearches of Prichard into the physiological differences of the various human races. Fortified by the innate arrogance of a scion of an ancien régime family and by his observations as an envoy in the Near and Middle East, he championed the theory, since entirely disproved, that ‘race’ is a permanent and immutable phenomenon, and he proclaimed the unchallengeable superiority of the white race over all others. Within the white race, Gobineau assigned the supreme position to the ‘nordic’—or as he fatuously called them ‘aryan’—peoples who, thanks to their praiseworthy qualities of hardiness and lust for power, are predestined to rule the rest of mankind. This farrago of biological nonsense, wishful romanticism and imperialistic dreams was lapped up eagerly by the French and German intellectuals. The German enthusiasm for Gobineau—the German translation of the essai went through several editions—is the less comprehensible in that Gobineau thought very poorly of the ‘German race’, which he considered a mixture of Celts and Slavs with hardly any pure ‘nordic’ blood. But there was enough substance in Gobineau’s book to provide nourishment for the growth of the pan-germanism and national self-adulation, and seemingly to justify anti-semitic and anti-slav excesses. Hence derived the ‘superman’ and the glorious ‘blond beast’ of Nietzsche and the germanomania and anti-semitism of Wagner." (Printing and the Mind of Man). Printing and the Mind of Man 335.         A Visit to the Indian Archipelago, in H.M. Ship Maeander,

London: Richard Bentley,, 1853. with Portions of the Private Journal of Sir James Brooke. Octavo. Original royal blue morocco-grained cloth, elaborately panelled in blind on spine and boards, title gilt to the spine, large gilt block of a Dyak war prahu to the upper board, all edges gilt, pale cream surface-paper endpapers. Two-tint lithographic frontispiece of Maeander "casting from Spithead", lithographed by Hawkins after Oswald Brierley and printed by Day & Son, and 7 other similar plates, one - "Volcanic Mountain, Comba Island" - with an additional reddish-brown tint added to great effect, large engraved folding map of the East Indies Islands, centred on Borneo, in an end-pocket. Head and tail of spine crumpled, corners slightly bumped, very pale marginal toning, but overall an excellently preserved copy in the original cloth. New edition, same year as the first, and essentially a repaginated, single-volume issue of the first edition. A superb copy, highly unusual thus. Keppel had served with distinction on the China Station during the First Opium War, following which he "was sent to Singapore as senior officer on that part of the station. There he made friends with Sir James Brooke, with whom he returned to Sarawak. For eighteen months he co-operated with Brooke for the suppression of Borneo piracy, and, after many engagements … destroyed the chief stronghold of the pirates, together with some 300 prahus" (ODNB). In 1847, after two years on half-pay Keppel returned to the China Station "and was appointed to convey Sir James Brooke to Labuan, an island off Borneo. At Brooke's suggestion, Labuan was ceded to Great Britain in 1846 by the Sultan of Brunei; it was made a crown colony, and Brooke named governor. Keppel's book treats the voyage to Labuan, incidents there, piracy in the South China Sea, and gives a description of Manila" (Hill). Brooke returned home to answer charges levelled against his administration by the radicals Cobden and Hume - the appendices contain documentation of the accusations - while Keppel continued to Australia, an account of which visit occupies the last four chapters of the work.

The Murray River: being a Journal of the Voyage of the "Lady Augusta"?

W.C. Cox, Adelaide 1853 - Octavo, 46 pp.; a few pencil annotations; in original (slightly spotted) printed brown wrappers, once folded down the middle but at some time put into a neat cloth binding. The first navigation of the Murray by steam-boat. Very scarce, particularly with original wrappers: the Ivo Hammet copy, with his stamp on a flyleaf. Kinloch's book records the pioneering voyage of the steamboat Lady Augusta, accompanied by the barge Eureka, up the Murray River to its junction with the Darling. The Lady Augusta - named for the wife of the South Australian governor - was the first such boat to make the long river journey, just pipping the rival Mary Ann to the £4000 prize that had been on offer from the South Australian Government since 1850. A second edition was published three years later in London. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Crummock Water

Thomas Agnew & Sons, Manchester 1853 - Lithograph by W. Gauci, printed in tints by M. & N. Hanhart, coloured by hand. Very good condition apart from two small skillfully repaired tears. An evocative image of the Lake District, an area renowned as the cradle of the Romantic Movement in Britain. The Lake District, an area of only some 700 square miles, contains all the main English lakes and is found within the northwestern counties of Cumbria and Lancashire. 'The Lakes' (as the area is also known) first came to prominence with the rise of the cult of the Picturesque in the second half of the 18th century, but it was Wordsworth, a native of Cumbria, born in 1770 on the outskirts of the Lake District itself, who really made it a mecca for those in search of the romantic ideal of landscape. He was joined in the area, at one time or another, by Robert Southey, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Keats, Lord Byron, Sir Walter Scott, Thomas de Quincey and many others. By the middle of the 19th century, when the present image was produced, the area was well established in the national consciousness as the area of outstanding natural beauty in England. Bristol-born James Baker Pyne is now considered by many to have been second only to Turner in his ability to capture the essence of the English landscape. After training initially for the Law, he turned to painting in his twenties. He moved to London in 1835, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists (where he later became vice president). He travelled widely throughout Britain and Europe, but he is perhaps best known for his series of views of the Lakes, painted between 1848 and 1851. Cf. Abbey Scenery 196 (1859 edition); cf. Tooley 387.

Peep at a Native Corrobory or Grand Festival

London: Read & Co., 1853. Hand coloured lithograph, 176 x 112 mm., fine, mounted. An unusual interpretation of an Aboriginal corroboree titled Peep at a Native Corrobory or Grand Festival by an unknown artist. From a very rare series of separately issued views this coloured engraving was issued in London in 1853 under the title Australian Life. This view is particularly interesting as it shows not only pipe smoking violin playing Australian settlers, it depicts Middle Eastern drum players participating in a fanciful full moon dance party.

The Native Races of the Indian Archipelago

London: Hippolyte Bailliere, 1853. Octavo, with five plates (four coloured) and two folding maps; a very good copy in half morocco. Important anthropological observations on the natives of New Guinea, but also on the North Australian Aborigines: chapter XII is devoted to Melville Island, Port Essington and North Australia in general, and one of the folding plates gives anthropometric comparisons between North Australian Aborigines and New Guinea natives. There are numerous discussions of Australian Aborigines elsewhere in the text, particularly those of Melville Island and Port Essington. The fine full-page handcoloured lithographs, produced in London, were based on drawings done on the spot by the Dutch artists Van Oort and Van Raalten. This is the first edition, separate issue (another version had the series-title "Ethnographical Library" which here only appears as an imprint on the plates). This copy is from the library of Archibald Liversidge, Professor of Mineralogy at the University of Sydney, and author of a number of important Australian works on the subject.
