The War between the United States and Mexico illustrated, embracing pictorial drawings of all the principal conflicts . with a description of each battle.

New York: D. Appleton & Company; Philadelphia: George S. Appleton, 1851. - Folio (22 4/8 x 17 2/8 inches). One lithographic map "of the Operations of the American Army in the Valley of Mexico in August and September 1847", 12 EXCEPTIONALLY fine hand-colored lithographic plates heightened with gum arabic by Adolphe Jean-Baptiste Bayot after Carl Nebel (one or two instances of marginal spotting, affecting the image on one plate, title-page and text leaves a bit spotted). Original blue linen, printed paper label on the front cover (some staining, a bit scuffed, endleaves creased). First edition, variant issue in cloth binding, also published in paper wrappers, loose in a portfolio, and in half cloth. This extraordinary book was the work of two men who were masters of their respected trades. George W. Kendall was the pre-eminent war reporter of the day, and Carl Nebel was one of the finest artists working in the Southwest able to transpose chaotic scenes with a vivid eye for detail and composition. THE FINEST LITHOGRAPHIC VIEW OF TEXAS PRODUCED IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY George W. Kendall was a printer, a respected newspaperman, and a journalist whose account of his Santa Fe Trail adventures in 1841-1842, following his surrender to the Mexicans, was first published as letters in serial publications. His story, once released in book form in 1844, was so compelling that it went through many contemporary editions and upwards of 40000 copies were sold through the conclusion of the Mexican War in 1847. Kendall supported the admission of Texas to the Union, and was in Texas as a reporter when he heard the news of the Mexican War. "Despite his earlier experiences, he accompanied the armies of Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott into Mexico as a war correspondent. While there, he captured a cavalry flag, was wounded in the knee, and earned widespread praise for devising, with Lumsden, methods for swift transmission of his war dispatches to the "Picayune". The men fitted out a small steamer as a press ship; it met other ships bearing war news, readied the news for printing, and took it to New Orleans, where workers at the "Picayune" rushed it to the press. It was circulated in the city and transmitted by swift express riders to other newspapers in the country. Kendall's biographer Fayette Copeland says that his Mexican War journalism made him famous as "the first modern war correspondent and the most widely known reporter in America in his day" (p. 150). "Before leaving Mexico, Kendall had agreed to write a book about the war that a [German] artist, Carl Nebel, was to illustrate. In 1848 Kendall sailed to France to work on the book, which was published in New Orleans and New York in 1851 as "The War between the United States and Mexico Illustrated". While in France, Kendall wrote frequent dispatches for the "Picayune" about the revolution of 1848. He also met and in 1849 married Adeline de Valcourt, a woman twenty-two years his junior, with whom he had four children. In 1852 he and his family moved to Texas near the present city of New Braunfels, where he became a sheep farmer at his ranch, "Post Oak" (Mary Ann Wimsatt for ADNB). "The very best American battle scenes in existence" (Bennett) Nebel, originally from Hamburg in Germany, travelled to America and lived in Mexico from 1829 until 1834. In 1836, he published in Paris his celebrated work "Voyage pittoresque et archéologique dans la partie la plus intéressante du Méxique", with 50 lithographs and an introduction by renowned explorer Alexander Humboldt. Nebel's magnificent plates in this volume depict the major battles of the Mexican War in dramatic and glorious detail. References: Bennett, American-Nineteenth Century Color Plate Books. Howes K76.         Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey

Smith Elder, UK 1851 - 2nd Edition 1851. It was published three years after the first edition in December 1850 by Smith, Elder and Company. The text has been updated and a new preface added by her sister Charlotte Bronte. Also included for the first time is the poems of the Bronte sisters. 'This new edition of 'Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey' is a book of very considerable literary importance. Not only does it contain (pp. vii-xvi) Charlotte's 'Biographical Notice' of her two sisters, together with (pp. xvii-xxiv) a Preface to 'Wuthering Heights'; it also includes a series of poems by both Emily and Anne which appeared in its pages for the first time' (Wise, p.104). The second edition has two states namely with the date 1850 and the date 1851 to the title page. Very few copies exist with the date 1850 and most appear with the date 1851. This book is dated 1851 and has the claret cloth boards to the spine and front board. The rear board has been added at a later date by re-casing the spine and two boards together. I suspect the rear board came away many years ago and was lost from the book and it was repaired using a similar coloured board from another book. Not ideal but finding the second edition in most of the original cloth is a rare find. The book is good++ with quite bright boards. Hinges and spine tips quite rubbed. Small loss to spine tips. Structurally the book works well. New endpapers with large bookplate to the front. Inscription to the inner page and inner title page page Contents quite good with light foxing and age toning to the pages. First few pages of the biographical notice by Charlotte Bronte are missing. More images can be taken upon request. Ref 10016 Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Historical and statistical information, respecting the history, condition and prospects of the Indian tribes of the United States... Illustrated by S[eth] Eastman, Capt., U.S.A.

Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo & Co. [later, Lippincott & Co.], 1851. First edition, 6 volumes, large 4to, complete with engraved portrait and 330 maps and plates (some chromolithographs, some tinted lithos, some steel engravings, a few hand colored), plus a folding table; engraved vignette title pages in each volume; volume VI under a slightly different title, and duplicating some of the plates in the earlier volumes. James J. Hill's set, with his bookplate in each volume. Bound in publisher's full red morocco, elaborate gilt stamping on covers and spines, all neatly rebacked with original spines laid down, 5 volumes with new endpapers; some shelf wear and minor rubbing, but in all a very good, sound, set. James J. Hill, railroad tycoon and founder of the Northern Pacific Railroad, owned the original Seth Eastman watercolors used in illustrating this massive work, watercolors that passed through our hands in 1995 and which have now been mostly donated to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. "Schoolcraft's work was intended to be a great encyclopedia of information relating to the American aborigines. With great earnestness, some fitness for research, and a good deal of experience of Indian life, Mr. Schoolcraft had but little learning and no scientific training. In consequence, his six volumes are little more than a magazine, of such matter relating to the Indians as fell top his hand, including a rehash of all which he had before written … Badly arranged, and selected as it is, the work contains a vast mass of really valuable material. It has indeed performed a very important service for Indian history, in collecting and preserving an immense amount of historic data. Vocabularies of Indian languages, grammatical analyses, legends of various tribes, biographies of chiefs and warriors, narratives of captivities, histories of Indian wars [etc.] are all related and blended in an extraordinary and perplexing manner… A very large number of beautiful steel engravings, representative of some phase of Indian life and customs, are contained in the work, but the most valuable of its illustrations are the drawings of weapons, domestic utensils, instruments of gaming and amusement, sorcery and medicine, objects of worship…and every form of antiquities which have been discovered" (Field). Accompanied by: Index to Schoolcraft's "Indian Tribes of the United States," compiled by Frances S. Nichols, Washington: G.P.O., 1954, 8vo, pp. vi, 257; fine in orginal printed wrappers.         Autograph manuscript.

No place or date. - Folio. 12 pp. on 3 bifolia, numbered 140-142. Numerous corrections, deletions, and insertions. The ms. discusses cosmogony and the movement of the planets, mentioning the contributions made by Immanuel Kant and especially Laplace, as well as Keplers' Laws, then expanding these considerations to the level of metaphysics. The working manuscript for vol. 2, chapter 6 ("Zur Philosophie und Wissenschaft der Natur") of Schopenhauer's collection of philosophical reflections, "Parerga und Paralipomena" ("Appendices and Omissions") - the philosopher's final work, published in 1851. The "Paralipomena" volume, from which this is taken, contains short ruminations arranged by topic under 31 subheadings. In view of the less-than-enthusiastic reception of the philosopher's earlier publications, publishers were reluctant to commit to this work; it was only after significant difficulty (and through the persuasion of the philosopher's disciple Julius Frauenstädt) that Hayn of Berlin consented to publish the two volumes in a print run of 750 copies - with a honorarium of only ten copies for the author. The subject matter and stylistic arrangement of the "Paralipomena" were significant influences on the work of philosopher and psychologist Paul Ree, and through him most notably on the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, whose later work explores - following Schopenhauer - the relation of man to himself, the universe, the state, and women through the art of aphorism. - In the present ms. Schopenhauer writes: "The truth of cosmogony, however, is based not only on the space-relationship upon which Laplace insisted, namely, that 45 celestial bodies circle in a uniform direction and at the same time rotate likewise; more firmly still is it rooted in the time-relationship, expressed by the first and third Law of Kepler [.] These thoughts on cosmogony give rise to two metaphysical reflections [.] Even such a far-reaching physical explanation of the world's creation can never satisfy the desire for a metaphysical one, or indeed take its place. On the contrary! The closer you come to tracking down a phenomenon, the more clearly it appears that it is precisely that: a mere phenomenon, an apparition, and not at all the essence of the thing in itself [.]" (transl.). - The present text begins with the final paragraph of § 85. It corresponds with the printed text in the Sämtliche Werke, ed. by A. Hübscher, vol. 6, p. 142, line 4 up to p. 150, line 19, with the exception of two sections not yet present in this draft (p. 146, lines 11-16, and p. 146, lines 32-page 147, line 7). Most of the parts which Schopenhauer deleted are published in vol. 7, pp. 138-130 and p. 138. - Slight edge damage. Provenance: On loan to the Dresden State Library until 1945; later in a foreign private collection. Sold at Stargardt's auction on Oct. 4, 1989. Schopenhauer manuscripts are of the utmost rarity: auction records since 1975 list only five other autograph manuscripts, only one of which was of comparable length.

The House of the Seven Gables

Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1851. First Edition. Hardcover. This is an original, unrestored copy of the first edition, second printing of Hawthorne?s gothic novel about the misfortunes of a New England family and their ancestral home, incorporating themes of guilt and sin, witchcraft and the falsehoods of Puritanism ? themes of course drawn directly from Hawthorne?s own family history. Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an American writer of short stories and novels, following in the Dark Romantic style of cautionary tales that showed guilt, sin and evil as inherent human attributes. Born with the last name Hathorne, he later added a 'w' to distance himself from his ancestors, one of whom was the only judge at the Salem witch trials never to repent his actions. A leg injury suffered as a youth while playing "bat and ball" left him confined to bed for a year. During this time Hawthorne developed a love of reading and resolved to become a writer. While at school, he produced a homemade newspaper called The Spectator, which he distributed to his family. He spent four years at Bowdoin College at his family?s insistence and with the financial support of his wealthy uncles. At school he met and befriended future President Franklin Pierce (of whom he would later write a campaign biography) and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Hawthorne's early works were short stories. He later commented that he didn't think much of these works, and furthermore they didn't provide sufficient income to support himself or his family, forcing him to take on other work. Political connections landed the Democratic Hawthorne a job as a surveyor in the Salem Custom House in 1846, although the turn of political fortunes four years later saw him removed from this position in favor of a Whig appointee. The out-of-work Hawthorne had ample time to write, producing his first novel, The Scarlet Letter, in 1850. This was the first mass-produced book in America, and its success made Hawthorne famous and financially secure. The Hawthorne family moved to Massachusetts shortly after, where he became friends with Herman Melville, and wrote The House of the Seven Gables (1851). This is a sound copy of the first edition, second printing, in good plus condition. Bound in the publisher?s brown ribbed cloth with blind rules and decoration and gilt spine print, pale yellow endpapers, and no publisher?s catalogue bound in. Binding B per BAL with ?TICKNOR & CO.? on the lower spine 1-1/16 inch wide with capitol ?O? in ?CO.? Second printing of the first edition is presumed based upon presence of a complete ?t? and ?h? in the last words in lines 1 and 2 on p.149 (not complete in the first printing), but persistent missing ?t? in the word ?apparent? at the end of line 25, p. 50, missing ?r? on the word ?or? at the end of line 25, p.278. The binding remains square and firm with unfaded color and bright spine gilt. We note light wear to extremities and mottling ostensibly due to minor moisture exposure. The contents show modest intermittent spotting throughout, with previous owner initials and surname inked on the front pastedown and the same surname inked on the facing front free endpaper. The binding is protected beneath a removable, clear mylar cover.

Edwin Forrest was a famous New York Shakespearean actor who filed for divorce in Philadelphia on the grounds of adultery, having found his wife with another actor. His wife countersued in New York. The trial lasted six weeks with a judgment against Mr. Forrest, who went on to appeal the case five times. As one would expect, this celebrity trial attracted a great deal of attention, in part though Mr. Forrest's efforts. A larger-than-life figure, his notoriety from the trial filled theaters, where he gave passionate speeches about the trial during intermissions. As printed, this book ends with the retirement of the jury. The verdict, included in our copy, was printed later in the New York Evening Post with instructions to cut and past the verdict into the endleaves of the book. Some copies do not have the verdict, other copies have it pasted on one or more leaves, which is why collations of this book differ.         Poems

London - Whittaker, 1851 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Hartley Coleridge's poems, witha dedication andtwo otherwise unpublished reworkingsby the author for 'Freedom' and one other. This is the second part of a two volume set. The first volume containeda memoir of the author's life by his brother, DerwentColeridge. This volume contains Hartley's poems. Hartley was the son of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, a founder of the Romantic movement. He was named after David Hartley, the philosopher. This volume contains the sonnets on which his reputation chiefly rests. They include a sonnet dedicated to his family friend William Wordsworth. Thededication by the author, which is found to one of the front blanks, explains the contents. He explains that they constitue the second part of the first volume of the collected works, the memoirs occupying the earlier pages. It is signed H. C. to D. H. 1851. The author has also re-written the sonnets 'Homer' and'Liberty'in his own hand beneath the originals. It seems that these reworkings are otherwise unpublished. Condition: In cloth with paper covered boards. Externally worn, with bumping particularlyto the extremities of the boards and to the head and tail of the spine. There is marking to the boards. The fronthingeis a little strained, though still firm. There are ink inscriptions by the author to the front blank, and to pages 134/5 and 140/1. There is a collector's stamp to the rear of the title page. There is some spotting throughout. The binding is a little tender, but still firm. Overall: GOOD.

        Hartford Evening Journal: (Bound newspapers) August, 1st, 1851 - February 26th, 1857 (Vol. 1, No. 131 - Vol. 1 308) (Gideon Welles's personal copy, ASMD)

Hartford Evening Journal, 1851-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable. Large folio newspaper. Contemporary binding. Spine leather lost. Boards nearly detached. Internally, some old, faint damp stains, mostly to margins; but the paper is generally very clean, unmarked, and in good condition. Many of the issues boldly promote the Fremont 1856 Presidential ticket. Attention is given to the issue of Kansas in the editorials. Numerous ads and local news throughout. Gideon Welles was a noted politician and journalist from Glastonbury, Connecticut. Welles wrote much of the editorial material for the Hartford Evening Journal. He joined the Hartford Evening News to promote his political (anti-slavery) views and the position of the nascent Republican Party. According to the front end page, this was his personal, archival copy (though I cannot definitively state this). There is a later accompanying letter from an unknown source concerning Welles' ownership. Most of Welles other papers are held by the Connecticut Historical Society. President Lincoln appointed Welles to his cabinet as Secretary of the Navy in 1860. Welles continued in this position through the Civil War and resigned in 1869. Please feel free to inquire further. This is an oversized or heavy book, that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.
