THE FIRST TRIAL & EXECUTION IN S. FRANCISCO ON THE NIGHT OF 10th OF JUNE AT 2 O'CLOCK...[caption title]

San Francisco: Lith. & Publ. by Justh, Quirot & Co., 1851. Pictorial letter sheet, 8 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches, on white wove paper. Old folds. Small closed tear along one fold in lower margin, with no loss. Four small holes at cross-folds. Very good. A striking and rare California pictorial letter sheet, depicting the first act of violence of the Vigilance Committee - the execution of the "Sydney Duck," John Jenkins. The so-called Sydney Ducks were a gang of Australian convicts who committed a number of arsons and robberies in San Francisco. Their activities, and the seeming inability of the legal authorities to stop them, were among the factors leading to the establishment of the first Vigilance Committee on June 9, 1851. The remainder of the printed caption tells the story: "John Jenkins, a Sidney [sic] man entered the store of Mr. V on long Wharf in the evening of 10th of June & carried off a sale. After he was captured he was brought to the corner of Sansome & Bush Sts. where he was tried by a jury of the highest respectability, and condemned to be hung. The execution took place on the Plaza on the same night at 2 o'clock. Immediately after sentence of death was passed upon him, he was asked if he had anything to say. He replied: No, I have nothing to say, only I should wish to have a cigar & brandy & water, which was given him." This moody lithographic illustration is done in an almost impressionistic style, with dark clouds obscuring the moonlit night, crowds of shadowy, cheering on- lookers, and Jenkins' body hanging from a rafter that forms part of a large cross at one end of the Custom House. "No series of events attracted greater attention than the workings of the 1851 and 1856 vigilance committees" - Kurutz (in the introduction to the Clifford Collection). This letter sheet was produced by Justh, Quirot & Co., one of the first and most important lithographic firms in San Francisco. It was printed on blue wove, gray wove, and white wove paper. The present example, printed on white wove paper, is the rarest of the three, with Baird locating only one copy, in a private collection. A vivid depiction of violence and justice on the Barbary Coast. BAIRD, CALIFORNIA'S PICTORIAL LETTER SHEETS 79. CLIFFORD LETTER SHEET COLLECTION 73. PETERS, CALIFORNIA ON STONE, pp.133, plate 66.

Bel exemplaire. 1 vol. oblong 4to. 36 lithographed and watercolored plates. Ancient boards. Very rare set of watercolored engravings featuring maritime scenes in Normandy at the beginning of the 19th century, by Charles Mozin (1806-1862). It was published in 6 parts of 6 plates. The 36 scenes, nicely hand-colored and very well documented (Mozin worked with ships model to be more precise), give an idea of the life of these people who made a living from the sea, accurate depiction of various ships, fishing scenes, etc. Fine copy.

The Works of John Milton in Verse and Prose; With a Life of the Author by The Rev. John Mitford

London - William Pickering, 1851 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. A beautifully bound set of Pickering'sdecoratedcompleteWorks of John Milton, including verse, prose, and a life of the author. Bound by Hayday, with his bookbinder's stamp to the front free endpapers. With a facsimile of the Agreement between Milton and Symonds, and plate of the 'Pedigree of Milton'. This is widely thought of as the finest set by Pickering, and is often found in particularly fine bindings as a result. This set is an excellent example. John Milton, was an English poet, author, polemicist and civil servant for the Commonwealth of England. He is best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost, included here in the second volume. He was a scholarly man of letters, a polemical writer, and an official serving under Oliver Cromwell. He wrote at a time of religious and political flux in England, and his poetry and prose reflect deep convictions. As well as English, he wrote in Latin and Italian, and had an international reputation during his lifetime. John Mitford was an English literary scholar, and Church of England clergyman. As well as clerical duties, Mitford contributed articles to theGentlemans Magazine, and became the editor of its new series in 1834. Mitford was an indefatigable student of the Greek and Roman classics, and was well acquainted with the principal French, German, and Italian authors. He was well read in English literature, and was an ardent lover of painting. Amongst other literary efforts, Mitford edited numerous works in Pickerings Aldine editions, and in 1851 Mitford edited in eight volumesThe Works of Milton in Verse and Prose, and wrote for it a memoir, expanded from that in the 1832 edition of Milton's poems. (DNB)Collated: complete. Condition: In full morocco Hayday signed bindings, with gilt borders and titles. Externally excellent with just a little rubbing to the heads and tails of the spines, and to the extremities. Each volume has a personal bookplate to the front pastedown. The bookplate has often offset a little. Generally clean and bright throughout, and firmly bound. Overall: NEAR FINE.

Photo ancienne albumine Java Indonésie Volcan Bromo

Rare. Onnes Kurkdjian Viewmaker and EntrepreneurHedi HinzlerOnnes Kurkdjian was born in 1851 in Russia; he died in 1903 in Surabaya, Java. He was a professional photographer who was trained in Tbilisi, Moscow and Vienna, and like many Armenians of the time, he went to the east in search of work. He settled in Surabaya, a port town on the east end of Java, in 1884. From 1890 onwards his name is connected with a photographic atelier that, in its early period, was located at the Bultzingslowenplein. While Kurkdjian primarily made portrait studies of Europeans in and around Surabaya and of Javanese women, he also photographed tropical forests, trees and volcanos. Kurkdjian's photographic style was characterized by the use of larger-format cameras to produce images of great clarity. In many senses, his work looks like that of the typical professional studio photographer working at the turn of the century. His portraits were printed on a textured matte surface, while views and record photographs were printed on glossy surfaces that were frequently ferrotyped. Kurkdjian received commissions, but produced work for promotional purposes as well. One such example is the Queen s Album, which was made to commemorate Queen Wilhelmina's visit to Java on August 31, 1898. This album includes views of the parade preparations, the visit itself and much of the pomp and circumstance that surrounded it. The images were mounted into an elaborate and decorative velvet--covered, silver--stamped album that Kurkdjian produced as a presentation piece for the Queen. In 1897, Kurkdjian took on an English assistant, G. P. Lewis. When he was invited by the Dutch Government to photograph the eruption of the volcano Kelut on June 6,1901 (the initial eruption took place on May 23 of that year), his assistant made the famous photograph of Kurkdjian at work, standing behind his tripod-mounted camera. Because it was so cold in the mountainous area, Kurkdjian was clad as for a European winter. After 1900, Kurkdjian cooperated closely with his associate; the Kurkdjian Atelier changed its name to Kurkdjian, O. & Co. Limited, and moved into new quarters in Surabaya. After Kurkdjian's death in 1903, G. P. Lewis remained in charge; and, in 1904, the Atelier became a "Company for the Exploitation of the Photographic Atelier Kurkdjian." In 1915, the Company was taken over by the pharmaceutical importers Mieling & Co. Portraits were the primary business of the studio after Kurkdjian's death, but views were also made. During the period from 1914 to 1917, while World War I was raging in Europe, Eastman Kodak Company, of Rochester, New York, became the primary supplier of photographic goods in the archipelago. While the number of professional photographic studios grew slowly, the use of photographic equipment by amateurs increased exponentially. Atelier Kurkdjian was Kodak's sole agent in East Java, and it thus provided developing, printing and enlarging services for many of the new users.

Ottimo e raro esemplare. Great Flower Books p.84, Nissen BBI, 2254. Stafleu & Cowan, 15921. Spesso viene proposta  in tre parti (voll.

MEMOIRS OF THOMAS DIXON, KNIGHT OF THE ORDER OF THE LILY IN FRANCE AND KNIGHT OF THE ORDER OF THE NETHERLANDS LION. Written by Himself. Circa 1834 [manuscript title].

Boston. . 1851 - 202pp. Approximately 28,000 words written in a highly legible hand. Contemporary calf, rebacked, tooled in gilt on spine and cover. Boards lightly stained; rubbed at extremities. Quite clean internally. Very good. Memoirs of the Chevalier Thomas Dixon (1781- 1849), a copy of the original manuscript, made for Thomas Dixon's son, B. Homer Dixon, in 1851. Thomas Dixon's life reads like a wonderful novel or adventure story, with one incredible event following another. Born in England, Dixon's father moves his family to Ostend, Flanders in 1786. As a boy he witnesses the exploits of the French Republican Army in Tournay, where he is at school. He mentions off-handedly that his mother foils an Irish plot against King George III. His memoir gives details of quite a lot of the tumultuous history of the time, both on the Continent and in England, including the Napoleonic Wars. Having moved to Holland and become a clerk at a merchant house there, Dixon eventually becomes a partner and is quite successful. In 1810, Napoleon visits the town of Flushing, where Dixon lives in Holland, and, as a member of the Bureau of Commerce and Magistracy in Flushing, he is among the deputation sent out to greet Napoleon. Later that night he is arrested for undisclosed reasons and taken to Paris, where he is kept in secret confinement. Despite repeated attempts, he is never told why he is being held, and he is never questioned about anything - though he was, at one point, poisoned, unsuccessfully. King Louis Napoleon, before ceding Holland to his brother the Emperor and abdicating his throne, enquires after Dixon to the Minister of Police in Paris and finds "'that the arrest of Mr. Dixon and eight others as hostages was a political act of the Emperor himself and that the Police had no cognizance of it.'" Thus it is that Dixon finds himself among a group referred to as the Dutch Hostages. He and the others are finally released after fifteen months of incarceration, due to the influence and pleading of Dixon's powerful friends in both Holland and France, though with the condition that the Dutch Hostages go into exile in Burgundy. After a time he returns home to Holland, in May 1814, where he is reinstated in the Magistracy of Flushing and as a Member of the Chamber of Commerce by King of the Netherlands. He resigns as magistrate, however, gallantly handing the King his resignation across the table at a dinner party. Dixon resolves to leave the Continent and return to his native England; he finds, though, that he is very coldly received and a stranger in his native land. He therefore returns to Holland and again becomes a partner in a merchant firm there. He fatefully decides to visit business correspondents in the United States, where he tours the country as far south as Savannah and, while in Boston in 1818, he meets and marries his wife. Upon returning home he receives word that he is to meet the Comte d'Artois at the French Court, with whom he became acquainted while in exile. He and his new wife travel to the French Court in Paris and meet the Comte and the King. They spend three happy years in Amsterdam before being relocated to Boston by the merchant firm. Later notes indicate that Dixon became a United States citizen in 1833, and was appointed Consul for the Netherlands at Boston that same year. He died in Boston in 1849. Some more genealogical information follows. The manuscript is accompanied by a printed version of the MEMOIRS., undated but from the late 19th century. Nine pages of typescript genealogy are bound in with it, as well as many blank sheets for the expansion of the family history and genealogy. Descendants later became socially prominent in Philadelphia. This contemporary manuscript copy of his autobiography contains an 1851 presentation inscription from his older son, Thomas Henry Dixon, to his younger son, Fitz Eugene Dixon (1821-80). An incredible tale, Thomas Dixon's well written and highly readable account gives a full history of

Chashiki kogetsu sho [trans.: Kogetsu's Tea Ceremony Styles].

Many illus. in the text. Five vols. bound in ten. Small 8vo, orig. blue patterned wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers (not present on the first volume), new stitching. Kyoto: 1851. First edition of this richly illustrated and detailed encyclopedic work on the Japanese tea ceremony; it was very influential in the late Edo period. The first two volumes contain a history of tea, a detailed history of the large and complicated Sen family of tea ceremony masters, the design the shelves which would hold tea ceremony utensils, and the general outline of each step of the tea ceremony. The next two volumes are devoted to tea boxes which would store the tea leaves, with a description of utensils used. Vols. 5 and 6 describe and illustrate the ornamental stoves for preparing the tea, the many kinds of tea bowls, tools for incense, and the containers for the tea powders. Vols. 7 and 8 discuss the kinds of canisters for tea, the hanging scrolls appropriate for tea ceremony rooms, vases for flowers, and the architecture of the tea room. The final two volumes give details on the style of decoration of the tea room, the fifty rules of "daisu" decoration (shelf and stand decoration), and the philosophy of the proper behavior of both hosts and guests ("one time, one meeting" ["ichi go ichi e"]). Nice set. Some minor worming to early leaves of the first volume, occasionally touching a character. Rare; WorldCat locates only a copy at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. There was a reprint in 1883. .

The War between the United States and Mexico illustrated, embracing pictorial drawings of all the principal conflicts . with a description of each battle.

New York: D. Appleton & Company; Philadelphia: George S. Appleton, 1851. - Folio (22 4/8 x 17 2/8 inches). One lithographic map "of the Operations of the American Army in the Valley of Mexico in August and September 1847", 12 EXCEPTIONALLY fine hand-colored lithographic plates heightened with gum arabic by Adolphe Jean-Baptiste Bayot after Carl Nebel (one or two instances of marginal spotting, affecting the image on one plate, title-page and text leaves a bit spotted). Original blue linen, printed paper label on the front cover (some staining, a bit scuffed, endleaves creased). First edition, variant issue in cloth binding, also published in paper wrappers, loose in a portfolio, and in half cloth. This extraordinary book was the work of two men who were masters of their respected trades. George W. Kendall was the pre-eminent war reporter of the day, and Carl Nebel was one of the finest artists working in the Southwest able to transpose chaotic scenes with a vivid eye for detail and composition. THE FINEST LITHOGRAPHIC VIEW OF TEXAS PRODUCED IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY George W. Kendall was a printer, a respected newspaperman, and a journalist whose account of his Santa Fe Trail adventures in 1841-1842, following his surrender to the Mexicans, was first published as letters in serial publications. His story, once released in book form in 1844, was so compelling that it went through many contemporary editions and upwards of 40000 copies were sold through the conclusion of the Mexican War in 1847. Kendall supported the admission of Texas to the Union, and was in Texas as a reporter when he heard the news of the Mexican War. "Despite his earlier experiences, he accompanied the armies of Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott into Mexico as a war correspondent. While there, he captured a cavalry flag, was wounded in the knee, and earned widespread praise for devising, with Lumsden, methods for swift transmission of his war dispatches to the "Picayune". The men fitted out a small steamer as a press ship; it met other ships bearing war news, readied the news for printing, and took it to New Orleans, where workers at the "Picayune" rushed it to the press. It was circulated in the city and transmitted by swift express riders to other newspapers in the country. Kendall's biographer Fayette Copeland says that his Mexican War journalism made him famous as "the first modern war correspondent and the most widely known reporter in America in his day" (p. 150). "Before leaving Mexico, Kendall had agreed to write a book about the war that a [German] artist, Carl Nebel, was to illustrate. In 1848 Kendall sailed to France to work on the book, which was published in New Orleans and New York in 1851 as "The War between the United States and Mexico Illustrated". While in France, Kendall wrote frequent dispatches for the "Picayune" about the revolution of 1848. He also met and in 1849 married Adeline de Valcourt, a woman twenty-two years his junior, with whom he had four children. In 1852 he and his family moved to Texas near the present city of New Braunfels, where he became a sheep farmer at his ranch, "Post Oak" (Mary Ann Wimsatt for ADNB). "The very best American battle scenes in existence" (Bennett) Nebel, originally from Hamburg in Germany, travelled to America and lived in Mexico from 1829 until 1834. In 1836, he published in Paris his celebrated work "Voyage pittoresque et archéologique dans la partie la plus intéressante du Méxique", with 50 lithographs and an introduction by renowned explorer Alexander Humboldt. Nebel's magnificent plates in this volume depict the major battles of the Mexican War in dramatic and glorious detail. References: Bennett, American-Nineteenth Century Color Plate Books. Howes K76.         Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey

Smith Elder, UK 1851 - 2nd Edition 1851. It was published three years after the first edition in December 1850 by Smith, Elder and Company. The text has been updated and a new preface added by her sister Charlotte Bronte. Also included for the first time is the poems of the Bronte sisters. 'This new edition of 'Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey' is a book of very considerable literary importance. Not only does it contain (pp. vii-xvi) Charlotte's 'Biographical Notice' of her two sisters, together with (pp. xvii-xxiv) a Preface to 'Wuthering Heights'; it also includes a series of poems by both Emily and Anne which appeared in its pages for the first time' (Wise, p.104). The second edition has two states namely with the date 1850 and the date 1851 to the title page. Very few copies exist with the date 1850 and most appear with the date 1851. This book is dated 1851 and has the claret cloth boards to the spine and front board. The rear board has been added at a later date by re-casing the spine and two boards together. I suspect the rear board came away many years ago and was lost from the book and it was repaired using a similar coloured board from another book. Not ideal but finding the second edition in most of the original cloth is a rare find. The book is good++ with quite bright boards. Hinges and spine tips quite rubbed. Small loss to spine tips. Structurally the book works well. New endpapers with large bookplate to the front. Inscription to the inner page and inner title page page Contents quite good with light foxing and age toning to the pages. First few pages of the biographical notice by Charlotte Bronte are missing. More images can be taken upon request. Ref 10016 Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
