Leder am Rücken etwas verblasst. - First complete edition of the historical and natural science writings of Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdes (1478-1555), the most important Spanish chronicler of the New World. Son of rich parents, he grew up in court and became a page to the heir of the throne. After the death of the Infante, he spent a few years on a political mission in Italy. 1514 he became the royal supervisor of the gold-smeltings in Santo Domingo and in 1523 official historiographer for the Antillas. As such he travelled several times from America to Spain and back. After his definite return to Spain, he wrote this book, of which Bartolomeo de Las Casas said it contained as many lies as pages. The first part of this work was printed in Sevilla. After Fernandez de Oviedos death other parts were edited with translations in French and English. This edition, richly commented and with illustrations and maps of the author is the first complete edition of the first report of the 'Primer Cronista del Nuevo Mundo'. Partly lightly stained. Cloth backed and folding into green cloth covers. A rare early separate map of Victoria and the neighboring Port Phillip District of New South Wales. The map is filled with a great wealth of detail. Settlement and counties are almost completely confined to the southwestern portion of Victoria, with many parts still completely unknown. Southeastern Victoria is labeled "Unsurveyed Country," for example; and a part of neighboring New South Wales is described as "Supposed Hilly County." Topographical notations are given throughout: "Dense Mallee Scrub," "Forest & Scrubby Country," "Extensive Grassy Plains," "Unsurveyed Country High Ranges & Scrub," and so forth. Folio (24 cm; ). 2 vols. in 1. I: [4] ff., frontis., 311, [1 (blank)] pp., [1] f. II: 336 pp., [1] f. First edition. Born in 1816 in the small town of Tizayuca in what is now the state of Hidalgo, Rodriguez Galvan is widely credited with being the initiator of the Romantic movement in Mexico. He wrote novels, poetry, plays, and was the editor of several periodicals, most especially Calendario de las Señoritas Mexicanas and Año Nuevo, El Recreo de las Familias. He died of yellow fever in Havana in 1842 at the age of 27 while en route to South America on a diplomatic mission. A few of the poems in vol. I were penned in => Havana before his death.These volumes offer his "Composiciones líricas originales" in vol. I and "Composiciones dramáticas originales" in vol. II. The frontispiece is a fine lithographic portrait of Don Ignacio, in Romantic style of course; there is a liberal use of handsome tailpieces. The whole was compiled and edited by the author's brother Antonio.=> This first edition is uncommon in our experience as dealers in Mexicana.Provenance: Masonic stamp, "Porfirio del Rio" on title-page; inscription to fly-leaf of A. Quijano, 1916.

Octavo (19cm); Blanck's first binding of slate A cloth with embossed circular publisher's device to front and rear boards; [i-xxiv], [1]-[635] + 6pp. publisher's ads. Original orange-coated endpapers. A good, unrestored copy. Spine has faded to tan, with consequent dulling to gilt; small losses to cloth at spine ends, joints and board edges, with one small, old inexpert repair to cloth at base of spine. Front free endpaper with a small (ca. 1/2") abrasion, the result of an ill-advised erasure, which has further suffered an undignified later attempt at re-coloring. Scattered foxing within, but text generally fresh and tight. Bookplate of Miriam Dyer-Bennett to front pastedown. In custom morocco and marbled paper clamshell box. A firm, unsophisticated copy of Melville's masterpiece, preceded by a three-volume London edition a month earlier. The American edition was 3000 copies, but the book sold poorly, and many unsold copies were destroyed in a warehouse fire in 1854. BAL 13664. GROLIER AMERICAN 60.

        Our Herds, No. 4, Dairy Cow

      London: E. Gambart & Co., 1851. Hand-coloured lithograph. Very good condition apart from some light soiling, mild rippling, and a few small losses at the edges of the top and left margins. 20 7/8 x 25 3/8 inches. 25 1/4 x 30 3/8 inches. A charming plate after a work by one of the most prominent nineteenth-century animal painters. Strongly influenced by the seventeenth-century Dutch landscape and animal painters like Aelbert Cuyp, Thomas Sidney Cooper was one of the most prolific and eminent animal painters of his time. As a young boy, he showed a remarkable aptitude for drawing, and he trained with the scene-painter Doyle while completing an early apprenticeship with a coachbuilder. After brief stints as a coach- painter, draughtsman, and scene-painter, he moved to London in 1823, where he began to sketch works in the British Museum. Although admitted to the Royal Academy schools, he was unable to attend due to financial constraints and moved back to Canterbury, where he worked as a drawing instructor. In 1827, he moved to Brussels, where he established a coterie of students and befriended Eugène Verboekhoven, whose animal paintings strongly influenced his early endeavors. It was during this period that Cooper first began to experiment with oil painting and completed several series of cattle lithographs, which were issued by various publishers including Ackerman.Cooper returned to London in 1831, where he exhibited at acclaimed venues including the Suffolk Gallery and the British Institution. His reputation grew after his cattle paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1843-45, and he was elected Associate Royal Academician in 1845. In addition to his intimate bovine studies, he also painted animals into the landscapes of other artists including Frederick Lee, R.A. and Thomas Creswick. Despite various attempts to experiment with other genres, Cooper's thematic mainstays remained cattle and sheep throughout his life. By the 1870s, he was inundated with profitable commissions, and many of his works were engraved and copied in order to meet public demand. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography.

Full polished tan calf bound by Root & Sons, covers with a gilt crown in centre and spine in five compartments with gilt crowns and roses; front joint on Volume I only a bit worn. A handsome set finely bound. Strickland (d. 1874) was an English historical writer. Her popular account of the queens of England is a classic work on the female monarchs of England.

        View of the Great Exhibition

      London: Published by Lloyd Brothers & Co. 22 Ludgate Hill, & Simpkin Marshall & Co. Stationers Hall Court, September 1st, 1851. Hand coloured lithograph highlighted in gum arabic. Mounted on card as issued. In excellent condition with the exception of some discolouration in the margins. Image size: 10 1/2 x 14 3/4 inches. 23 1/2 x 17 1/4 inches. This wonderful image, illustrating various pieces of French furniture, was included in Day & Son's rare folio of lithographs illustrating the wonders of the Great Exhibition. This is a lovely image from a rare suite of lithographs by Day & Son entitled Recollections of the Great Exhibition of 1851, published in London in the same year. This remarkable text is comprised of twenty-five hand coloured lithographs illustrating the various rooms and exhibits of the Great Exhibition. The works are lithographed by Day & Son after images by John Absolon, W. Goodall, C. T. Dolby, H. C. Pidgeon, Michael, and Wilson. This wonderful image depicts an ornate room filled with French furniture. The room is populated by numerous chairs and there is an elegant Rococo side table in the center as well as a gilt edged sideboard along the left wall. The Great Exhibition of 1851, although it was the first truly international event of its kind, was prompted by the success of the French Industrial Exposition of 1844. The idea was initially ignored by the British Government, but under the enthusiastic patronage of Prince Albert, plans for the exhibition went ahead. Albert was keen that the 'Exhibition of All Nations' should be self- financing: Parliament still remained unconvinced. A fund of 230,000 pounds was raised and a board of Commissioners set up. The declared aims of the exhibition were to celebrate human progress in the form of manufacture, invention and good design, and to promote cooperation between nations. The size of the exhibition space was fixed at 700,000 square feet, and the government was persuaded to treat the Crystal Palace as a bonded warehouse so that no import duties were payable on goods imported for the exhibition. As it happened, and despite government skepticism, the event was a huge success, both nationally and internationally, and received over 6,000,000 visitors. The exhibition ranged in scope from ornamental furniture and modern machinery to an elaborate tent from Tunis.         USA Dept. of Interior War of 1812 Vermont Rare USA Seth WILLEY Land Script document

      New York: printed by Toppan, Carpenter and Caselear , 1851. 1st. No binding. Very Good. American "script" document allotting 40 acres of land to " War of 1812 " soldier Seth Willey, a corporal in Captain Wilson's Company, during the war of 1812. It comes with affidavits attained to the reverse dealing with its ultimate use in South Dakota This is a very scarce item seen only infrequently on the market. Very Good condition., A super item printed by Toppan, Carpenter and Caselear with 6 banknote quality vignettes and a wonderful blue overprint. Willey used this certificate to pay for the land. What is a big added bonus is that all the supporting paperwork where he redeemed it is attached. The only land script document we know of with this amount of additional supporting documents. Probably the same Seth Willey? "Seth Willey came to this town about 1800, settling on road 32. His son Seth was born here, married Abigail Glines, and had four ions and six daughters, of whom Silas G., born in 1830, married first, Sarah S. Spencer, who died in 1862, and second, Mary B., daughter of Baldwin Martin, in 1873. He has had born to him two sons and two daughters, only one of whom, Emily E., born in 1879, is living. Mr. Willey resides at Peacham Hollow. "

        United States Frigate St Lawrence 50 Guns Sailing off Osborne, Isle of Wight

      London: Ackermann & Co, May 5th 1851. Hand-coloured lithograph by Dutton, printed by Day & Son. Small expert repairs. Sheet size: 21 1/4 x 27 2/8 inches. Beautiful portrait of United States Frigate "St. Lawrence" saluting off Osbourne, Isle of Wight, summer residence of Queen Victoria. The St. Lawrence was laid out in the 1820s by the Norfolk Navy Yard, but she remained uncompleted on the ways until work on her, interrupted by a shortage of funds, was resumed during the Mexican War and she was finally launched in late 1847 or early in 1848. She bore 8 VIII-inch guns and 42 32 pounders. A beautiful sailing ship, she represents an ideal of the pre- steamship days, superbly rendered by Dutton, who was probably the best printmaker of marine subjects during this period. Thomas Goldsworth Dutton (d. 1891) worked for Day & Haghe and Day & Son, producing refined lithographs of the great British ships of the period, as well as visiting battleships of other nations, as here.With Commander Joshua Sands in command, the St .Lawrence departed New York on the 20th February 1851, partially on a good-will visit but also carrying to England the exhibits from the United States for the Great Exhibition in London, the first modern world's fair which opened on 1st May, 1851. At some point before May 5th (the date this print was published) she evidently visited the Isle of Wight, where as a diplomatic courtesy she fired a salute to Queen Victoria. Her return voyage was made via Lisbon and she arrived back in New York on 11 August, 1851. Cf. Rockwell's Compilation addressed the needs of miners and other individuals who needed to reconcile Mexican land titles with the new U.S. laws that went into effect in the territory acquired by the United States in the recently concluded Mexican-American War (1846-48). An impressive achievement and a notable contribution to comparative law, it discusses Mexican mining and real estate laws, and their Spanish colonial antecedents, and offers comparisons to the common law of mines and mining. Also included are treaties and other general documents, such as the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and Mexican colonization laws from 1823 to 1846, and a vocabulary of Spanish words. While Howes categorizes this work as a derivative of Williams' earlier Appleton publication(s), the author, in his prefatory "To the Public", goes to great pains to reassure the reader this a new work, in which an "entirely new plan has been adopted.", a stance to which Clark & Graff agree. Further, research suggests, this the first Williams' publication to address California. This 1851 map not recorded by Wheat, TRANSMISSIPPI, though see entry 769 for the 1852 version. Wheat tells us the map "is largely based on Fremont but which carries much up-to-date information ...". Somewhat uncommon on the commercial market, with the last copy to auction in 1999. . Fold-out map [24-3/4" x 29-1/2"] at rear, entitled "A New Map of the United States, upon which are Delineated its Vast Works of Internal Communication, Routes across the Continent &c.         Flowers and Their Kindred Thoughts

      Longman & Co. A beautiful volume that has the double benefit of an Owen Jones Relievo binding and 15 full page chromolithographic plates (including decorated Colophon page), also by Owen. To start with the binding: Designed by Owen Jones and bound by Remnant Edmonds & Remnants. There are bevelled boards where the bevels are blocked with a curling stem and leaf decoration and the boards (front and rear) are thick with ivy leaves, berries and twigs blocked in blind and relief. The title to the front board is in gothic lettering based upon twigs. Gilt inside dentilles. Gilt edges. The front and rear end papers are on thick textured paper and have a gilt ivy / leaf / berry pattern. printed on upper endpaper verso, at the tail is: ' Bound by Remnant Edmonds & Remnants'. The interior presents 14 superb full page chromolithographic flowers, each associated with an attribute which is described in gilt gothic lettering on the opposite page (e.g. Snowdrop for hope, Primrose for innocence, Rose for love). The lithography is by E. L. Bateman. The overall condition of this volume is very good. Specific condition: There is some slight staining and scuffing to the outer boards (see photo). The front and rear hinges have been reinforced with a neat brown tape strip. There are one or two minor brown spots. This book has a gutta percha binding and quite thick heavy pages - this combination means that some of the pages are loose and pulling away. There is a contents page but no title page present. Some additional background information that you may find of interest: Owen Jones worked for Thomas De La Rue on playing card design, and many of the chromolithograph flower illustrations in this book are to me reminiscent of his work on playing cards for De La Rue. Jones is best known as an interior and pattern designer although he was also an architect. He was superintendent of works at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and designer of the Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Alhambra Courts at Crystal Palace after its move to Sydenham in 1854. Together with Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt, Jones produced the vastly influential Grammar of Ornament in 1856. Leake's patented "Relievo" bindings, made of heavily molded and embossed leather left to its natural color, are usually associated with the English designer Owen Jones. Like papier-mâché bindings, "Relievo" bindings recall both medieval bindings and wood carvings and often occur on ecclesiastical books. The English trade binders Remnant & Edmonds were responsible for many known examples of "Relievo" work, winning a prize for them at the Great Exhibition of 1851. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Very Good hardbound copy of the American First Edition in the publisher's original purplish-brown cloth with the circular lifesaver device debossed on the front and rear boards, expertly rebacked retaining the original spine with the loss of a bit of the upper & lower decorative gilt, spine gilt somewhat faded, tips repaired, unobtrustive scattered spotting and staining to the binding, faint marginal dampstain to the upper corner of the first one hundred pages, foxing, ex-libris Fisk Memorial Library, Natchez, Mississippi. Apart from the rebacking and the minor repair to the tips the binding is completely original, with no cosmetic applications. This copy with the original burnt-orange endpapers, the six pages of publisher's advertisements, a terminal blank, and double flyleaves at the back. The ink signature of the original owner, William M. W. Cochran, Natchez, Mississippi, is present on the front free endpaper and dated December, 1851, indicating the book was purchased only a month after publication. Also present is the pencil signature of W. L. Cochran, dated 1909. Rubber-stamped onto the front flyleaf and (more faintly) on the dedication page is the library stamp of Fisk Memorial Library, Natchez, Mississippi (no other library markings present). The book is housed in a custom-made clamshell box bound in chocolate-brown cloth with a paper label on the spine. All in all, a presentable copy, in the publisher's original binding, of this desirable high point in American literature.. 1st U.S. ed. Hard Cover. Very Good.

A NEAR FINE copy, only lightly worn with a few spots to the cloth, but almost completely unchipped at both ends of the spine which is very rarely the case. This example is bright and sharp, has never been repaired or restored. With the earliest adverts at the front of the volume (Clark's primary state "A") dated 1851. Perfect type at page 50, line 25 & page 278, line 25. Reset type at page 149, lines 1-3. BAL 7604 in the variant "B' binding. This copy's original owner (and we may be the first bookseller to have noticed this) has drawn a small and well-executed portrait of Hawthorne on the recto of the final blank, dated April 18th, 1851 and captioned with the Latin phrase: "Qui facit per alium, facit per se" which suggests something akin to the legal notion that an owner is responsible for damage caused by his antecedents or current servants. Possibly this refers to the curse of THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES whereby the sins of a family lineage get passed down through each generation (which is also reflected in the decaying of the seven-gabled mansion itself). Normally, original ownership marks aren't much mentioned but we find this fascinating. Along with THE SCARLET LETTER, THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES contains some of Hawthorne's greatest writing and remains, after 160 years, just as much a classic. A fresh collector's copy with only the most minor of trivial faults. Housed in a vintage cloth and leather labeled slipcase. . First Edition. Near Fine.

The front and back of the case with onlaid designs of Moby-Dick in black and white leather, decorated in gilt, surrounded by a single blind-stamped border with gilt corner fleurons. Spine with five raised bands, decorated in gilt in compartments with three black leather labels lettered in gilt. When we purchased this copy, it was completely untouched but it had some wear and small losses along the spine joints and spine head and tail. This book hardly ever appears in untouched state and we thought long and hard as to what we should do about the wear. SUPERB LATE 19TH CENTURY OLIVE BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT AND INLAID IN THE ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE, BY FAZAKERLEY (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with frames of gilt rules, dots, and inlaid tan morocco, central panel of upper cover with inlaid red morocco rectangle emblazoned with the title in gilt at the head, below it a large, topiary-shaped, symmetrical design in inlaid morocco and gilt tooling, incorporating 34 heart-shaped green leaves on curling hairline stems as well as five lotus blossoms with lavender petals and inverted red heart centers (lower cover with smaller version of the same inlaid elements inside a plain-ruled panel), raised bands, gilt spine compartments continuing the same design (each with four inlaid leaf cornerpieces and central lotus flower), turn-ins with gilt and dot frames and lotus and leaf cornerpieces, ivory silk endleaves, marbled flyleaves, EDGES GILT AND ELABORATELY GAUFFERED WITH DEEP GOUGING (in a similar floral pattern), THE FORE EDGE WITH THREE EXQUISITELY PAINTED SCENES within pointed frames, these vignettes taken from illustrations appearing within the book. Spine and front board sunned to a pleasing uniform tan (as almost always with this color of morocco), occasional minor foxing (more prominent on first and last gatherings), but still AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY OF A LOVELY BOOK, the morocco lustrous and without perceptible wear, the edges with particularly brilliant gilding, and the three painted fore-edge vignettes in perfection condition. Alaric Alexander Watts (1797-1864) was best known as editor of two literary annuals, "Literary Souvenir" and "Cabinet of Modern Art." Publication of the present poetic anthology helped to pull him out of bankruptcy, and he soon afterward retired from the literary life to a secure civil service pension. Binder Thomas Fazakerley is especially well known for delicate paintings on glittering gold fore edges, visible, not when the volume is fanned open, but rather when it is closed--and that is certainly a feature notably on display here. The vignettes are set off by a striking physical context: the fancifully designed and artfully crafted morocco is a visual delight, and the unpainted portions of the golden book block edges are memorable, as the gauffered embellishments in high relief represent sculpting of this sort at least as pronounced as we have ever seen. In the top miniature (measuring approximately 38 x 33 mm.), we see a colorful sunset over a tranquil lake. The bottom miniature of the same size depicts a stone-towered castle beside a river. The center miniature (measuring approximately 58 x 38 mm.) shows an adorable Cupid in a scallop-shell sailboat. Despite the fact that this catalogue contains two examples, the type of volume offered here is rarely seen for sale: from 1975 to 2009, ABPC lists just three bindings with multiple fore-edge vignettes (we had a fourth such specimen in 1994, and there were three others, one in poor condition, at the 3 December 2010 sale at Christie's-New York). Former owner Rodman Wanamaker (1863-1928) was the heir to the great Philadelphia department store and, in his father's opinion, a "genius in merchandise" and "an inspiration to creative labor." A celebrated connoisseur, Wanamaker not only collected, but also sold fine cultural objects in his store, "thereby encouraging America's taste for the beautiful." (ANB) It is not surprising that he would have owned the present volume.

        Life of Thomas Stothard, R.A. with personal reminiscences

      London: Bradbury & Evans for John Murray, 1851. 1 volume expanded to ten, small quarto mounted to large quarto. (14 5/8 x 10 3/4 inches). Lithographic portrait frontispiece, on india paper mounted, additional title within decorative wood-engraved border printed in bistre, title with wood-engraved headpiece, numerous wood-engraved illustrations printed in bistre, extra-illustrated with approximately 1,344 additional items (including 1 autograph letter signed from the author, 8 original pen, ink and wash drawings by Stothard, 6 original watercolour drawings by Stothard, and 1,323 engravings after Stothard including 14 by William Blake). 19th-century red morocco gilt by Riviere, covers with wide decorative borders of filets and a decorative roll of stylized foliage and flower-heads with stylized flower-spray cornerpieces, spines in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third, the others with elaborate repeat decoration of massed small tools, gilt turn- ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (small expert repair to head of vol.VIII). A unique collection of Stothard's work, based around the first edition of the first full biography of the artist by his daughter-in-law, expansively extra-illustrated with original watercolours, drawings and engravings after Stothard by many of the greatest engravers of the late- 18th and early 19th century, including Stothard's friend William Blake 'In 1779 Stothard commenced his career as an illustrator of books, being employed to illustrate Ossian and Hervey's Naval History. But his principal employers were Bell and Harrison, and in this year his numerous designs for Bell's Poets and Harrison's Novelist's Magazine began to be published. The first of the latter was a scene from Joseph Andrews (dated 1 Dec.), and in the following year he made no less than 148 drawings for this publication, for which he was paid a guinea apiece. He also made many drawings for the Ladies' Magazine in this and the following years, and a number of small but spirited drawings of the famous actors and actresses of the day. Among the prose works illustrated by him were novels by Fielding, Smollett, Richardson, and Sterne, Ridley's Tales of the Genii, Paltock's Peter Wilkins, Don Quixote, Gil Blas, Robinson Crusoe, the Arabian Nights, the Vicar of Wakefield, and Gulliver's Travels. These designs made a new departure in book illustration by their variety of invention, their literary sympathy, their spirit and their grace. Those to Peregrine Pickle and Peter Wilkins have been specially admired, but Stothard never surpassed those to Clarissa Harlowe for elegance, or those to Tristram Shandy for delicate humour. He may be said to have founded the types of Sancho Panza and Uncle Toby, afterwards adopted by his friend Charles Robert Leslie and others. To this period also belong a few charming illustrations to Ritson's Songs (1783). A little later (1788-9) came his illustrations to the Pilgrim's Progress, in which he found a region of pure but very human allegory well suited to his gentle imagination... To 1790 belong his illustrations to Robinson Crusoe, published by John Stockdale, and engraved by Medland, a series of great beauty (re-engraved by C. Heath, and published by Cadell thirty years later); and also a set of six charming groups of children at school and at play. Besides these more important designs, he executed a number of headpieces, tailpieces, frontispieces, and vignettes of all kinds, including some charming miniature drawings of royal festivities. He designed even shop-cards and fashion plates, for, though popular, he was poorly paid, and, having married in 1783, had to provide for an increasing family... It was in 1793 also that his first illustrations to Rogers's Pleasures of Memory were executed. The first edition of the poem in the British Museum, illustrated by Stothard, is dated 1794, but there are two engravings in the print-room (one of them the delightful Hunt the Slipper) which are dated 1793... In 1796... appeared his illustrations to the Fables of Flora, which are remarkable for the gracefulness of their fancy and the beautiful drawing of the flowers. In 1798 were published his beautiful illustrations to Pope's Rape of the Lock, in 1790 the Seven Ages from Shakespeare, and by the close of the century he may be said to have almost covered his field of illustration... During... [the early part of the 19th century]... his taste was frequently consulted in the decoration of the houses of his wealthy friends and patrons, of whom Samuel Rogers was the earliest and most constant. Stothard helped in the decoration of Rogers's house in St. James's Place (built 1803), and in the illustration of successive editions of his poems for over forty years. In the most elaborate editions of Rogers's Italy (1830) and the Poems (1834) Stothard joined with Turner in contributing illustrations, which were engraved on steel by Finden and others. The smaller engravings on wood by Luke Clennell (the first of which appeared in Rogers's Pleasures of Memory, 1810) are justly prized for their close imitation of Stothard's beautiful touch with the pen. Less known are the little illustrations of the Pleasures of Memory (1808) and Human Life (1810) in the Royal Engagement Pocket Atlas, an annual for which he provided the headpieces for many years... In 1815 Stothard went over to Paris with Chantrey and others, and visited the Louvre before the dispersion of Napoleon's spoils. In 1817 and 1818 respectively he exhibited San Souci and Fête Champêtre, in which the influence of Watteau is perceptible. They were followed in 1819 by the illustrations to Boccaccio (published 1825) already referred to. In 1821... he sustained a severe shock from the sudden death of his son, Charles Alfred [first husband of Mrs.Bray]. This is said to have had a permanent effect on his spirits... In 1825 his wife died, and in 1826 he lost his lifelong friend, Flaxman, who had in early life been attracted to him by the sight of some of his book illustrations in a shop window... He continued to walk out alone, in spite of his weakness and deafness, till the close of the autumn of 1833, when he was knocked over by a carriage. He sustained no apparent injury from the accident, but he never recovered from the effects of it, and died at his house, 28 Newman Street, on 27 April 1834. He was buried in Bunhill Fields... Stothard's life appears to have been as pure and blameless as the art to which it was devoted. His disposition was retiring, and he did not seek society; but he was justly esteemed by his fellow-artists and his few intimate friends. He paid visits to Archdeacon Markham and other of his friends; he went once to Paris; but his art supplied him with sufficient pleasure to the end of his life. As Leigh Hunt said of him in his last days, an angel dwelt in that tottering house amidst the wintry bowers of white locks, warming it to the last with summer fancies.' (DNB). Presented to his daughter with the warm, beautiful and personal dedication in volume 1, which translates as thus: "For/ My dear Daughter Mathilde Ørsted/ Nobody has finished reading this book/ before You, my dear Mathilde, when You so faithfully helped me with the corrections the printing of a book carries with it, the thoughtful questions and remarks <which> gave me reason for many improvements. Therefore, accept the book which already would have befallen You as a beloved daughter, together with a reminder of the entertainings (?) between us, of which You were the cause. H.C. Ørsted." Oersted is universally known for his discovery of the Electro-Magnetism in 1820. Afterwards he went on to write a number of important philosophical works on natural philosophy and empiricism, of which "Aanden i Naturen" he himself considered his main work. Both H.C. Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard admit to having been influenced by the writings of Oersted. "He was an enthusiastic follower of the "Naturphilosophie" school in Germany, whose main object was the unification of physical forces, thus producing a monistic theory of the universe. It was to further this purpose that Oersted sought in actual phenomena the electro-magnetic identity of which he had already convinced himself on metaphysical grounds" (Percy H.
