THE PLANTATION SCHEME; OR, THE WEST OF IRELAND AS A FIELD FOR INVESTMENT

Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1850. vii,[1],191,4,4pp. Large octavo. Attractively bound in modern three quarter morocco and marbled boards. Frontispiece map and plate. Old stamps of a defunct mercantile library, short snag at fore-margin of title, slight tanning at edges, otherwise a very good copy. First edition of this influential work. Caird was "an ardent free trader [and] he published in 1849 a treatise on 'High Farming as the best Substitute for Protection.' The support of a practical farmer with a literary style was of the highest service to the supporters of free trade, and the work speedily ran through eight editions. It introduced Caird to the notice of Peel, who commissioned him in the autumn of the same year to visit the south and west of Ireland, then but slowly recovering from the famine of 1846, and to report to the government. His report was subsequently enlarged [and published as this work] ... The sanguine view which he took of the agricultural resources of the country led to the investment of large sums of English capital in Irish land" - DNB. Not in Black. GOLDSMITHS 36798.

First Edition, a complete set of Bednar's extensive work on diseases of the new-born and the infant. The fist part deals with diseases of the intestines, the second with those of the nerves; part there is on illness of the respiratory organs, heart, liver, glands, eyes and ears, skin blood; etc. and concludes with hereditary syphilis. Also included is a chapter on teeth and teething. - - "Alois Bednar (1816-1888) was a famous Viennese paediatrician and one of the most original paediatrician in Europe. His description of aphthae of the palate in the newborn ("Bednár's aphthae") is in vol 1, p. 104 of his book." - - "Alois Bednar . . . was, in the words of Jacobi, 'one of the most original scientific pediatrists of Europe,' an active and enlightened teacher. . . . He was author of a treatise on the diseases of newborn and suckling infants, in four parts (1850-53) . . ., a pediatric Lehrbuch (1856), and a treatise on infant diet (1857). . . . His pediatric treatise is distinguished by most careful accounts of the different toxemias of infancy, which were so plentiful in the foundling asylums of his time" (Abt/Garrison, History of Pediatrics, p. 92). - - "It was with this work that Bednar achieved a breakthrough, and it was in this work that he fully displayed his great skill in clinical observation and graphic description" Lesky, Vienna Medical School of the 19th Century, p. 142 - - Erste Ausgabe! - - Garrison & Morton No.6335; Wellcome II-129; Grulee 823; Lesky, 166 etc.; Peiper [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Advertising for A Travelling Anatomical Museum with Access Restricted to Men, aged 20 plus). Grosses anatomisches Museum aus Florenz.

Printed by Theodor Wentz, s. l., s.d., but Frankfurt/M., around 1850.. Typographic wall or hand bill with a woodcut illustration in upper half. Size: 14.5 x 9 inches. Minorily browned (due to light offsetting on verso from another broadside, this was bound with), but in very good condition. Very rare advertising bill for a travelling cabinet of anatomical preparats. The woodcut shows us a renaissance-styled anatom beside his dissecting table, which is occupied by a dead human body. – The cabinet would roam 800 preparats, half the number said to be natural specimen and the other half waxworks, the latter supposedly executed “under the eyes of Europe‘s foremost anatomical professors”. Three of the items on show are described in detail: 1. A fully dismountable modell of the human body (obviously a waxwork model), 2. the natural body (“der natürliche Körper”) of the chief of the Matapar-tribe from Senegambia on the east coast of Africa – the German words chosen for the description speak in favour of this being actually an embalmed, real body. 3. A female hydrocephalus from the Swiss canton of Wallis – the text does not state, whether this was meant to refer to a complete body or to the head alone, but it says, that the individual reached an age of 34 years, and so this is obviously referring to a preparat. Admission to the exhibition was restricted exclusively to men aged 20 plus. – I could not find any further information about the owner of the cabinet, or any other bills advertising for his cabinet in other German places. His family name, however, is as German as it can be, so the term “anatomical cabinet from Florence” most likely would refer to the origin of the waxworks, as Florence was a widely known centre for this kind of artisanry.

THE POOR ARTIST; OR, SEVEN EYE-SIGHTS AND ONE OBJECT. "SCIENCE IN FABLE."

London: John Van Voorst, Paternoster Row, 1850.. Small octavo, pp. [1-2] [i-iii] iv [v] vi-ix [x] [1] 2-234, frontispiece, nineteenth-century three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine panel tooled in gold, black leather title piece. First edition. An important work of proto-science fiction that illustrates human visual perception. Various creatures, a bee, an ant, a spider, a robin, and others, ask a penniless artist to paint a "new thing" each has seen, based on its own perception of the object. The artist does so and the object turns out to be a lost sovereign that he uses to hold a one-man show which is a huge success. This is the book famously reviewed by William Watson in his A LITTLE EARNEST BOOK ON A GREAT OLD SUBJECT; OR CHAPTERS ON POETRY AND POETS, published in 1851 which includes the first use of the phrase "science fiction." Wilson opens his review of Horne's book as follows: "Fiction has lately been chosen as a means of familiarizing science in one single case only [the Horne book] ... We hope it will not be long before we may have other works of Science-Fiction, as we believe such books likely to fulfill a good purpose, and create an interest, where, unhappily, science alone might fail." "A very unusual book, reasonably successful in achieving its aims, and certainly a document in the history of SF worthy of at least a footnote by academia." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume III, p. 8. See Aldiss and Wingrove, TRILLION YEAR SPREE, p. 461. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Reginald (1979; 1992), or Suvin (1983). Ex-Cambridge, England, "Union Society" library with their bookplate affixed to the front paste-down, and their circular ownership stamp on the title page and several text pages. Binding quite rubbed but sound, internally tight and clean, a very good copy overall. COPAC reports 7 copies. OCLC reports no copies of this edition. A rare book. (#156280)

« After a long history of the ills suffered by workers in contact with lead, Brachet attributed a pathophysiology to saturnism involving the "ganglionated nervous system". As a sanitarian, Brachet recommended replacing ceruse with zinc white to reduce the toxicity of paints ». O. Walusinski, "Jean-Louis Brachet (1789-1858). A forgotten contributor to early 19th century neurology".       1850 - Lurid German Broadside Commemorating a Mother Who Killed Her Children, then Committed Suicide [Broadside] [Murder/Suicide]. [Bavaria, Germany]. Schrecklicher Kinder- u. Selbstmord, Zu Holzkirchen am 25ten Februar 1850. [Holzkirchen, Germany], 1850. 10" x 8-1/4" broadside. Verse text in two columns divided by vertical black rule, large woodcut vignette of murder scene below large woodcut title. Light toning and minor edgewear, otherwise fine. * Using a kitchen knife, a distraught mother killed her two children, one 6 months old, the other 4. She then stabbed herself fatally. The bodies were found in the woods near Holzkirchen, a small city in Upper Bavaria. The text recounts the event without any explanation of the mother's motive.

(Impressively Huge Wall Bill of Schreyer's Travelling Menagerie). J. Schreyer‘s Menagerie. Roßplatz, gegenüber dem Affentheater. A Huge Wall Bill advertising for the Travelling Menagerie.

Leipzig, Vereins-Buchdruckerei, s.d., but around 1850.. Imperial folio (36 x 23.5 inches). With a woodcut illustration (11 x 17 inches) in upper half, showing the menageur sourrounded by the main attractions of the menagerie (lion, hyaena, gepard and a cougar around his neck!). Printed on very fragile paper, some marginal wears professionally restored. Lower right corner with a light brown spot, affecting the wood cut bordure, but all together in very good condition for an ephemeral printing product, especially with respect to its size and the type of paper applied for printing. Very uncommon, impressiv wall bill, which I could not find another copy of in libraries worldwide. – The menagerie of J. Schreyer (cf. Wurzbach XXXI, 305) was founded in the year of his/her father Heinrich Schreyer's death (1793-1847), who was an animal trader and menageur, native to Lemberg in Galicia (today Lwiw in Ukraine). The inital ‘J.' most likely stands for his widow, who continued with the menagerie when Heinrich died from typhoid fever shortly after his arrival to Vienna, where the family opened their ‘monkeytheatre' (germ.: Affentheater). The wall bill advertises their travelling menagerie, which consisted mainly of big cats, involving a pair of lions from the Barbary, a black Java leopard (panther), a ‘cruel, spotted hyena from the Cape of God Hope‘ and an African carical (i.e. karakal, a desert lynx). All those animals were tamed and would become part of a spectacular show as illustrated in the wood cut, including their feeding from the mouth of the tamer! Beside these also a marmoset together with its 8 days old child would be on display, as well as several further monkeys and a collection of birds.

PHOTOGENIC MANIPULATION: PART II. CONTAINING THE THEORY AND PLAIN INSTRUCTIONS IN THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY, OR THE PRODUCTION OF PICTURES THROUGH THE AGENCY OF LIGHT. DAGUERREOTYPE

George Knight and Sons, London 1850 - 16mo., 60 pp., illustrations in text, 4 pp. adverts. Original printed paper wrappers. The front wrapper bears the contemporary signature of the original owner and is moderately soiled, with wear and partial separation at the spine. The lower tips of several text leaves are creased. A near very good example, housed in a newly made cloth with paper labels pamphlet case. Initially written by George Thomas Fisher, Jr., and published in 1843 by George Knight in two parts, the first concerned with the paper process, the second with the daguerreian; both with greatly reduced texts. By 1845, the two parts were separated and published independently, and together. In 1848, after Fisher's death, Robert J. Bingham is listed as the author, and the manuals were expanded with new advances in the processes. This 1850 edition is called the fourth edition, as was the 1848 printing. See Gernsheim, INCUNABULA OF BRITISH PHOTOGRAPHIC LITERATURE, No. 682, and Roosens and Salu No. 6367 which fail to note this 1850 fourth edition. All editions of this work are rare, with WorldCat locating only two copies dated 1850, but both are the fifth edition.

Sixth edition. 8vo., 15 pp. Printed stiff wrappers. Aside from a few light spots of foxing and light toning on the corners of the title page, this is a fine and bright copy. House in a cloth over boards pamphlet case with printed labels. This was the first work to suggest the Cliché-Verre process by which a drawing on a coated glass plate could be used as a negative in contact with a silver salted paper to make a positive print. Mathieu also suggested the application of gold toning to intensify the image. "The idea of gold toning paper prints was borrowed from daguerreotypists, who used a mixture of gold chloride and sodium thiosulfate called sel d'or (literally, salt of gold) to intensify and tone their daguerreotypes. This important modification of the original daguerreotype process was discovered in 1840 by the famous French physicist Hippolyte Fizeau, and it soon became standard practice. Not until 1847 was the same idea applied to paper photographs; in that year P. F. Mathieu suggested the technique in a pamphlet entitled Auto-Photographie. Unlike the enthusiastic adoption of 'gilding' by daguerreotypists, gold toning of paper prints did not immediately catch on with photographers. Only when publicized after 1850 in the influential writings on photographic technique by Gustav LeGray did gold toning gain popularity, and then only slowly." From THE ALBUMEN & SALTED PAPER BOOK: THE HISTORY AND PRACTICE OF PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTING, 1840-1895, by James M. Reilly (Rochester: Light Impressions, 1980). WorldCat locates only four copies of the 1847 first edition, and two copies of an 1848 edition, as well as a single copy of a German edition of 1847, and a single copy of a English edition of 1848, and three copies the French edition of 1850 with two different imprints. This would explain the "Sixième Édition" on the imprint. Roosens and Salu No. 1938. Bellier de la Chavignerie, Manuel Bibliographie du Photographe Francais, 1863, No. 42 noting the 1847 first edition. Although there are no identifying signature, this copy was purchased from the sale of Alphose Poitevin's library.

Prijs: ?1.100,-.
